Message from the President

As we approach the summer period and look back, the Chamber has had a busy start to the year, launching our new Future of Trade theme, hosting the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Heng Swee Keat, delivering major events such as International Women’s Day, planning some fantastic activities for the second half of the year and working alongside the British High Commission on their SG-UK Partnership for the Future in recognition of this Bicentennial year. While politics in the UK continue to throw plenty of curve balls for the future, the growth of our region looks far more certain and this is a key year of opportunity.

Recently we hosted a special evening to say thank you and farewell to His Excellency Scott Wightman, the British High Commissioner to Singapore. Scott has been a key supporter of the Chamber during his four years in Singapore and has shared his own thoughts on his time in-post in our article on page 34. The Chamber thanks Scott for his work to strengthen the position between the UK-Singapore and the UK-South East Asia and personally I wish to thank him and his wife Anne for their friendship. We wish Scott all the best for his new appointment with the Scottish Government and settling into life in Edinburgh.

Kara Owen will soon take on the role of High Commissioner and we encourage you to sign up to the Back to Work Summer Social event on 22nd August where you will have an opportunity to meet her as we welcome her to the British community in Singapore.

Kara is due to meet the Chamber team in her first week in Singapore as a key stop at the beginning of her appointment.

I would like to welcome our new Board members Shivkumar Seerapu, James Hennah and Michael Shearer who were elected in April’s Annual General Meeting, and look forward to working with them and our returning Board members to drive the Chamber strategy on your behalf in the year ahead. The Board continue to set the direction of the Chamber, strengthening relationships with Singapore Inc, promoting ASEAN with Singapore’s connectivity and setting ourselves apart as the partner of choice for businesses and other trade associations.

We have recently launched sales for our upcoming World Cup Rugby Dinner which takes place on 12th September and becomes the third Gala Dinner for this year alongside the 20th Anniversary of the Annual Business Awards on 3rd October, and the Great British Ball on 7th December. Tables and individual tickets will be available for each of these events on our website and we encourage you to bring colleagues and friends to join us.

Announcing our Future of Trade series It is critically important, in this year more so than ever, that the Chamber provides relevant and timely information on the nature of trade relations for the UK to our members.

As relationships for the UK enter a new beginning in 2019, our new Future of Trade campaign reflects our goal to strengthen our agenda and the support we can provide to you. The theme will look at collaboration within trade, exploring the relationship between the UK and Singapore, and the UK and ASEAN. We are delighted to be partnering in this significant series with Lloyds Bank Corporate Markets, reflecting their own mission in Helping Britain Prosper.

On 22nd May, we hosted our inaugural Future of Trade event in this series, looking at how the British business community can engage in assisting the development of bilateral trade in the energy and utilities sector.

Meet our new Executive Director The Chamber Board are delighted to announce that David Kelly has been appointed as Executive Director, British Chamber of Commerce. David will join the team on Monday 15th July.

David brings strategic experience to our management team from his current role as Director of Asia Pacific at The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) where he has had much success increasing the footprint, influence and membership of the Institute.

David is a Chartered Marketer and has been an engaged member of the British Chamber for several years, participating in Business Committees, driving and attending events and collaborating with the Executive Team.

Prior to his role with the IMarEST, he has worked in the food and beverage and financial services sectors.

Top Ranked UK School Launches First Singapore Campus The North London Collegiate School (NLCS) a top ranked UK private educational institution, formally announced the launch of its campus in Singapore at a launch event on 25 April 2019, held at the British High Commissioner’s Residence, Eden Hall.

NLCS was awarded a prime location at Depot Road after a competitive bidding process in 2015. The Singapore location will be the first Southeast Asian campus for NLCS, adding to its sister campuses in the UK, South Korea and Dubai. NLCS has been consistently ranked the top IB Diploma School in the UK for the last 14 years and is among the very best International Baccalaureate (IB) Schools in the World. Dulwich Olympiad 2019 Are any schools in Asia 400 years old? Dulwich College (Singapore) is in a year of celebration as its founding College in London celebrates its 400th anniversary. As part of this exciting year Dulwich in London hosted the Dulwich Olympiad 2019 for nearly 1000 students across the Commonwealth of 11 Dulwich Colleges worldwide.

Edward Alleyn founded his College of God's Gift in 1619 and, four centuries later, we have a global community of 10,000 Alleynians. 130 students from Dulwich College (Singapore) travelled to London to take part in this unique celebration of sport, drama, art and music. It was a week of memories being made, history being written and friendships being built.

The week started with an Opening Ceremony at Dulwich College with flag parades and Dulwich College Beijing, the hosts of the previous Olympiad in 2015 handed over the Olympic torch to London. Sports students competed in football, touch rugby, netball, badminton, athletics, basketball and swimming in some of the UK’s most iconic venues, including The Aquatics Centre in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, The London Community Track at the London Stadium and The Copper Box. Nearly 200 Olympiad musicians performed in combined ensembles and choirs at the Queen Elizabeth Hall at Southbank. The programme of music reflected the diversity of musical cultures in the eleven schools and included both Taiko and Korean drums, local Singapore pieces and arrangements by a range of European celebrated composers.

Drama students also performed at the iconic QEH with a wonderful production of Faustus. Every College was responsible for two of the deadly sins which were, created, devised and pre-rehearsed in separate countries and then performed in front of a full house in London.

The art programme included an array of masterclasses with professional artists and designers culminating in every student and staff member involved in Making It!, a growing installation where the entire Dulwich community added their 'mark' in the form of drawings and sculpture.

Add to this Saracens vs Harlequins at the London Stadium, Fulham vs Manchester City at Craven Cottage, England vs Czech Republic at Wembley, West-End shows, a Thames boat trip and jaunts to both Cambridge and Stratford-Upon-Avon, the students could be forgiven for thinking the UK was the best country ever, especially as the Spring sun shone down for the entire 10 days.

The Dulwich Olympiad 2019 will not only serve as one of the most memorable experiences for our students and staff, but marks what will be a continued collaboration that truly builds bridges across the world. Next stop Singapore in 2023.

They benefit from a business-friendly public sector; cutting-edge universitybusiness collaborations, and a geographic position right at the centre of the UK, with superconnected links by road, rail and air.

Key sectors for the region include

Companies here are also successfully building trade relationships across the globe; taking our distinct specialisms to the international market.

Poco Nido, a Sheffield-based company that creates limitededition children's clothing and footwear, has established a second company in Singapore. Founder and designer Catherine Lobley said: "The company came into being because my husband had been posted to Singapore for work.

I decided to start up a second company, running it alongside the existing one in the UK. "The week I arrived in Singapore, I already had an appointment scheduled with a new supplier. To do that from the UK would have

been impossible because a small business doesn’t have budget for long distance factory trips. This July. I’m exhibiting in Shanghai for the first time, which is another thing that we would have struggled to do with the UK company.

"Setting up the company was easy, but you need to be on the ball with regulation changes. Finding the right accountant and business advisor is so important. You also have to be very careful of IP infringement. I faced problems with our owl logo and it led to a lot of unexpected cost to reclaim, so if you register in the UK or Europe, do China at the same time.

"As with any expansion into a new area, there are pros and cons. But as long as you have the right support and your business can take on the extra work involved my advice is to do it because the world is so much bigger than just the UK."

Pricecheck UK, also based in Sheffield, is an international wholesaler and distributor of branded goods which exports to 80 countries including Singapore.

In the first year of focused trading with Singapore in 2015, sales grew by 550%. Pricecheck has built on this success over the past few years and now has excellent partnerships with well-established Singaporean businesses.

“Our customers in Singapore are brand conscious and very loyal to particular brands,” said Pricecheck's Joint Managing Director Debbie Harrison.

She added: "Pricecheck supplies some of the biggest brand names in the world at competitive prices, and that’s a perfect synergy. The Singapore market is familiar with the brands we buy and sell, and we understand what our customers are

looking for in terms of product, price and excellent customer service. The culture and highly professional way of trading in Singapore is also hugely beneficial.

Negotiations are straight-orward, and we haven’t really encountered any major challenges. The World Bank ranks Singapore as the easiest place to do business in the world and I can see why.

“Our aim is to continue to develop our relationships in Singapore and focus our efforts on opening more direct accounts with retailers.”

We’re driven by an innovative, entrepreneurial spirit; not just dreaming big, but making it happen.

Situated at the western edge of the United Kingdom, Wales is a country that forms part of the UK and has a population of three million people.

Geographically, it has a long open border with England, allowing free movement for centuries.

Since 1999, the country has had its own devolved Government, with control over its own economic development and spending. Wales has been welcoming businesses for many years, helping them to thrive, grow and realise their potential.

Companies that locate here have the advantage of easy access to the UK market, with its population of 65 million.

Many people will probably experience Wales every day. The chip in their smartphone, the wings of a plane that they’ve flown on, the film/TV series they enjoyed, through to their car’s engine. All Wales made.

In tech, Wales is a key destination in Cyber Security. In recognition of our reputation and growing expertise, Wales were invited to join the Global Ecosystem of Ecosystems Partnership in Innovation and Cybersecurity (Global EPIC) in 2017.

Working with partners, Welsh Government is involved in a series of initiatives that demonstrate our determination to grow the Cyber Security sector in Wales. These initiatives include: The National Cyber Security Academy (NCSA), a major UK initiative aimed at developing the next generation of cyber security experts. NCSA work

with industry partners, including global tech giants Thales, Airbus and Cisco and undergraduates work on real world projects set by NCSA partners. Also included is the Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Analytics, the centre aims to detect cyber threats targeting various internet-enabled environments.

‘The centre was awarded Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Research status by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) in 2018’.

Wales is also leading in the development of Compound Semiconductors which promises to be a key enabling technology for many applications including Industry 4.0.

The £50m Compound Semiconductor Catapult, based in Newport, is a UK national centre of excellence and forms an integrated

part of Europe’s first Compound Semiconductor cluster. The cluster offering includes capabilities and laboratory facilities required by industry to accelerate the development of new products.

Looking ahead, Welsh Government are planning to attend the Singapore Air show in 2020 and later this year, we are also planning a multi sector trade mission to Singapore in October 2019, working with the British Chamber of Commerce to facilitate meetings in the region with like-minded companies and potential customers. The visit will build on existing links with the market.

Our commitment to sell Wales to the world has never been more focussed and this mission provides an ideal platform for us to build on established links and discuss future export opportunities.

Highlights of our British High Commissioner's Time in Singapore In celebration of his dedicated service, we invited Scott Wightman, outgoing British High Commissioner, to share his thoughts and highlights of his four years in Singapore.

Everyone who comes to live in Singapore discovers that time seems to pass more quickly here. I still struggle to accept that it’s been four years since Anne and I moved into Eden Hall.

Representing the UK in Singapore has been just as much of a privilege for me as it was in Seoul. But it’s fair to say that the context has been more challenging.

An uncertain world Four years ago, few foresaw the pressure liberal democracies around the world would now be under; or the extraordinary pace of development in artificial intelligence and data analytics and the opportunities and disruption they would be creating; or the rapidity with which some of the predicted impacts of climate change would become real.

And when David Cameron gave his barnstorming speech on the Eden Hall lawn in July 2015, which of us in the audience expected that he would be gone within 11 months and that Britain

would have voted to leave the European Union?

So it’s really heartening against this background of uncertainty, that during those same four years, UK engagement in Singapore, and more broadly in Southeast Asia, has grown and our relationship with Singapore has got even stronger, building on a stable and resilient core.

The number of UK residents in Singapore has increased from about 35000 to well over 40000, reflecting the growth in the number of British businesses operating here. UK goods exports increased by 30% from 2014 to 2018. Negotiations should soon conclude on a bilateral agreement to ensure continuity in trade relations after we leave the EU. Most Singaporean investors remain bullish about opportunities in the UK. Although the overall number of Singapore students is falling with the birth rate, the number choosing to study at our world-class universities is

still around 7000; our market-share is increasing. And our extensive research links are expanding into new areas of cutting-edge science.

In security, after several years’ absence, we’ve welcomed four Royal Navy vessels to Sembawang in the last 18 months.

We’ve signed our first bilateral agreements on defence cooperation and security. Our relationship on cybersecurity is developing fast, opening up new business opportunities for our firms. And it’s precisely in the tech space that Natalie Black, HM Trade Commissioner for Asia Pacific, sees huge potential for the UK, supporting the development of Singapore as the world’s first Smart Nation.

SG-UK Partnership for the Future More or less from the time of my arrival, we identified 2019, the bicentennial of the establishment of the trading post by Raffles and Farquhar, as an

opportunity for us but also a risk. We saw the chance to showcase the relationship and raise awareness in both countries of its breadth and depth.

But we were conscious of the danger of being seen to crash Singapore’s party and of placing the emphasis on our colonial past.

Our answer was the SG-UK Partnership for the Future, which our two Prime Ministers agreed in April last year and which our two Foreign Ministers inaugurated in the first week of January. The Partnership has four pillars: digital economy; sustainable business and innovation; defence and security; and education, culture and youth.

New Government-to-Government partnerships in areas like intellectual property, meteorology and digital government form a core. But our concept was always that businesses, universities and other organisations would see the SG-UK Partnership for the Future as an opportunity and want to

get on board.

The results so far have exceeded our most optimistic expectations. By the end of March, there had been over 100 Partnership branded events involving 32 partner organisations. There had been over 13000 original uses on social media of the #SGUKpartnership hashtag with over a million impressions.

... UK engagement in Singapore, and more broadly in Southeast Asia, has grown and our relationship with Singapore has got even stronger, building on a stable and resilient core BritCham is one of the most enthusiastic partners. That hasn’t

surprised me because along with the British Council, the Chamber has been the High Commission’s most important ally throughout my time in Singapore.

I’ve deeply appreciated the support we’ve had from Bicky and Hugo, from Board members and the executive team, and from corporate and individual members in promoting UK interests.

Of course, it’s to be expected that the Chamber is active on the business agenda. And we’ll need to work even more closely together as we develop the bilateral trade and investment relationship outside the EU, tackling market access barriers on our own and exploiting new trade horizons.

But BritCham’s role in promoting British values of diversity and inclusion in society and the workplace and of integrity in business, as well as British excellence in design and innovation is absolutely crucial to our work. The Chamber is a key instrument of UK soft power.

Recognising our strong historical links and the many opportunities for future collaborations, the SG-UK Partnership for the Future was launched in January 2019 by the UK’s Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt and Singapore’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan.

The bedrock of this year-long Partnership campaign is our shared beliefs in free trade and international law, and our strong commitment to the rules-based multilateral system that allow our nations to work together to embrace innovation and technology in all sectors and at every level government to government, business to business, academic to academic and person to person. It does this by spotlighting collaborations in the digital economy, sustainable business and innovation, security and defence as well as opportunities in education, culture

and youth-related programmes.

There is a keen understanding in the UK, as in Singapore, that innovation is the lifeblood of national prosperity and both nations have undertaken a ‘whole-of-government’ approach to set gold standards as trade and business hubs. The 2018 Global Innovation Index – jointly published by Cornell University, INSEAD and the World Intellectual Property Organisation – ranked the UK and Singapore as the fourth and fifth most innovative economies in the world. And the SG-UK Partnership was created to help both nations share their expertise and experience in a world of fastchanging audiences, challenges and business models.

Since its launch, the campaign has supported 13 Memorandums of Understandings (MOUs) signed between key establishments in the UK and Singapore across the sectors and including R&D, education, healthcare, business, public infrastructure and the arts. From corporates such as

iamYiam, a UK-based healthcare solutions provider partnering with Singapore’s Fullerton Health to bring sustainable digital solutions to the healthcare sector across APAC, to the Coventry and Birmingham Universities initiating joint programmes with Singapore schools, corporate labs and private companies; the first quarter of the campaign has been a busy one. With more than 30 partners coming on board, both in Singapore as well as in the UK, the campaign has supported over 100 events that showcased the best of Singapore and UK partnerships.

Singaporean companies are seizing the opportunity that the campaign creates to grow their business. Cynopsis Solutions, a fintech and regtech disrupter from Singapore, not only actively used the campaign to publicise their participation in Scotland’s DataFest 2019 and later, the UK FinTech Week under but also attributed the Partnership for helping them tap into growing global interest in anti-money laundering and eKYC solutions.

In the other direction and further facilitating increasing business flows between Singapore and the UK, the Singapore eCommerce Enterprises Development (SEED) office opened in London with support from Enterprise Singapore to help UK companies expand into Singapore and, from here, into the region. When seen alongside the increasing number of UK-based businesses looking to join trade delegations to Singapore and vice versa, the importance and impact of agreements such as the SG-UK Partnership for the Future is clear.

And the UK government is making it even easier for Singaporean start-ups and entrepreneurs to establish themselves in the UK. A new Start-up Visa for early-stage, high-potential

enterprises looking to enter the UK is now available alongside the Innovator Visa that invites more experienced entrepreneurs to expand their presence in the UK. Public sector agencies have also picked up on the opportunity to pool expertise in tackling shared issues.

Meteorological Services Singapore signed a partnership agreement with the UKs Met Office for more efficient climate and weather response. Earlier in the year, the UKs National Biofilms Innovation Centre signed two MOUs with the Singapore Centre for Environmental Life Sciences Engineering and the Singapore National Biofilm Consortium to facilitate joint R&D programmes.

With governments, corporates and communities increasingly working together to arrive at more efficient and impactful solutions to national challenges, the opportunities for collaboration are many. The SG-UK Partnership is proving to be an effective platform to drive this and is on track to support a successful future bilateral relationship.

In this issue, our Editor sat down with their Commercial Banking Asia CEO and Country Head of Singapore, Shivkumar Seerapu, to discuss how the bank plans to support British businesses in these critical times and what lies ahead for the industry.

You joined the bank originally in late 2017 to head the Asia Global Transaction Banking business before taking over as Asia CEO and Singapore Country Head in late 2018. In recent years the wider financial sector has been managing a long period of uncertainty as the negotiations continue for the UK’s exit from the European Union. How has this impacted the bank to date and has there been any direct impact or change of strategy resulting for the Asia business?

Lloyds Bank’s core income is from the UK franchise, therefore our own business is not expected to be drastically impacted.

As a result, we are confident that we can weather any short-term impacts of Brexit but we remain watchful for our clients, especially those small and medium sized businesses who rely on the movement of goods between the UK and Europe. We are prepared to help them in any way we can, illustrated by our lending commitment to UK businesses.

There is likely to be little direct impact to our business in Asia; if anything, it may be a positive result as British businesses begin to look at markets beyond Europe and this positions our operations in Singapore well to support those clients.

Lloyds Bank has a strong history of helping Britain prosper with recent examples such as the announcement in March of over £9 million committed to SME apprenticeships by 2022, and in January the pledge to lend £18 billion of

gross lending to UK businesses this year. How does this company mission translate to supporting British businesses looking to expand into Singapore or the ASEAN region?

We have a strategy in Asia that is aligned with our values of Helping Britain Prosper, which we do in a few different ways. Firstly, a significant number of our large multinational clients in the UK have operations and subsidiaries in Asia and we aim to serve their Asian needs.

Secondly, we manage and commence head office relationships with Large Asian clients who have a meaningful presence in the UK or looking to expand into the UK. And lastly, we actively assist and finance Asian institutional investors looking to acquire assets in the UK – either commercial real estate related or acquiring businesses in the UK. It is important for us to stay focused in this two-way flow of helping Britain to prosper.

There is an active interest in Asia for investment prospects in the UK, particularly for those with a 5-7 year, and beyond, horizon view of their investments and business plans.

To support businesses keen to export, Lloyds Bank has established the International Trade Portal as an Official Partner of the Department for International Trade (DIT), helping companies to expand their knowledge on suitable markets, compliance, and costs. How will the Portal deliver on

your commitment to support 25,000 new exporters by 2020?

The Portal sits at the core of our mission for Helping Britain Prosper, particularly for smaller businesses and first-time exporters, and we were one of the earliest banks to partner with DIT to establish this form of advisory tool. In our discussions with these small and medium sized businesses we realised that when they are looking at a market for the first time, getting finance for the export is not the difficult part, the greater barrier is access to relevant market information. For example, are there trade fairs coming up that they should attend? What are the key regulations, sanctions and issues to be aware of for their products or services? An easy to access tool, such as this, provides value for our clients, and is customised for their trading needs, which we can then support with roadshows around the UK to spread awareness.

Once the clients feel confident that they have enough knowledge, we can then assist with specific products and connect them with DIT and subsequently the British Chamber of Commerce in the relevant market.

You have spent over 20 years in the banking sector working for various international banks. How has the industry transformed over this time and what challenges, other than the UK/EU relationship, do you foresee in the near future that should be addressed today?

43 Anyone who has spent as long as I have in one industry would surely have experienced a few economic/ business cycles of change including regulatory changes, consolidation etc. The most significant event in my career was the global financial crisis and the long lasting impact of the regulatory changes that resulted from this.

Even in more recent times, there are developments that concern us and our clients and we actively monitor these, whether they are trade disputes, geo political risks or country specific events.

While Brexit has been a key topic for us, when we talk to our global multi-national

firms and our clients in this region, they are concerned beyond Brexit, with the US-China trade negotiations of note and certain sectors that are likely to undergo significant change in the coming years.

There is also an ongoing concern about cyber crime and the vulnerability of certain sectors to data breaches. In the banking sector this becomes a specifically important risk as we need to protect not just client data but also client funds. This is, understandably, driving a lot of investment in technology in the banking industry and also training since ultimately, our colleagues are our best defence.

The International Trade Portal in Action:

Devon based, luxury outdoor wear manufacturer expects to double its turnover within the next 13 months A Devon clothes manufacturer has secured a new contract to export its range to Japan with the support of Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking.

Fortis Clothing, which was established in Axminster in 1997, has seen an increase in demand for its luxury outdoor wear from a number of international markets in the past year.

The new contract will see three Japanese fashion retailers stock its range of coats, trousers, bags and vests for three years. With the new contract in place, Fortis Clothing is expecting to double its turnover in the next 13 months.

Fortis Clothing makes clothes for the military, police force, farmers and outdoor enthusiasts across the country. It currently exports its products to Denmark and New Zealand and has an annual turnover of £300,000, employing 10 members of staff.

Capitalising on growth opportunities overseas: The contract was secured after the business used Lloyds Bank’s International Trade Portal to identify and prioritise the best overseas opportunities for its products or services.

"The demand for British-made clothing is growing, and being able to tap into new markets in Japan is a big step in our international growth plans," says Oliver Massy-Birch, Director of Fortis Clothing.

"Before we started exporting, and due to the seasonal nature of our products, we would see a spike in sales during the UK’s colder months. Exporting to countries experiencing winter at different times in the year has resulted in our sales book becoming more consistent year-round. This has given us the headspace to explore new markets. Britishmade products are now more competitive than ever to businesses buying in other currencies due to the weaker pound, opening up an opportunity for manufacturers to take advantage of this growing trend."

As a service provider in these sectors, what are the key trends, challenges and opportunities for you this year? What can the two countries learn from each other to provide a well-rounded education for students of all ages?

“In our work with more than 600 international schools in Southeast Asia, we emphasise three educational principles that inform the Cambridge Pathway, leading from Primary Checkpoint to IGCSE to International AS & A Levels:

“Singapore and the UK share many of the great societal challenges, particularly in ageing, sustainable transport and cybersecurity. At the same time, Newcastle University is recognised for excellence in these fields and hosts the UK’s National Innovation Centre for Ageing (NICA) and the National Innovation Centre for Data (NICD) in a state-of-the-art building ‘the Helix’ on Newcastle’s campus. 45 Securewest International Ltd “In the UK it is widely recognised that travel is an essential element of self-development and education. Similarly in Singapore more educational establishments are following this approach with students travelling overseas as part of immersive learning programmes. The rise in student group travel year on year across the education sector now presents a number of challenges in understanding where students are and the potential risks they might encounter. The risks of visiting regions of conflict or natural disaster and the threats of targeted attacks and terrorism are increasingly unpredictable. While most trips are usually incident free, it’s still important to put the necessary measures in place to protect staff, students, organisations and reputations. In our experience, UK Universities have taken steps to ensure they fully understand their responsibility under duty of care legislation. This goes beyond just relying on insurance to mitigate any travel risks. The perceived “Security Bubble” in Singapore has for a number of years developed a culture where travel risk isn’t as high of a priority.”

This has been one of the key considerations for how we develop our programmes at ICAEW. Our experts conduct regular research and consultations to assess whether the current curriculum remains relevant and useful for students of all ages and ensure that our pedagogy remains agile and balanced between knowledge-based and skill-based learning.

Reuter Chua, Country Head, ACCA Singapore “Digital is the biggest factor that is disrupting traditional businesses and impacting the way business information and trade exchanges take place. Possessing the awareness and conceptual knowledge of emerging digital technology is just touching the tip of the ice-berg. The important next step is to have clarity of the right digital strategy and technical solutions to adopt and knowing how to operationalise them at the workplace.

The key challenge faced by organisations is changing the mindset of workers and helping them to understand that technological changes are here to stay, hence it is important to embrace the change, and pick up digital skills that will better prepare them for Industry 4.0. We see opportunities in helping our accounting professionals upskill through the organisation of workshops focusing on emerging technology and supporting their training with practical cases relating to accounting and finance. Topics on Machine Learning/ AI and Robotics Process Automation, where knowledge sharing is supplemented with case studies and practical demonstrations, are often well received as they result in productivity gains that can be easily seen and understood.

We recognise that digital is arguably the biggest factor that will shape the future of the accounting profession. As such, ACCA has incorporated digital applications into the content and exam delivery of the qualification. Because digital is a vital professional quotient, the ACCA Qualification ensures that our students are developed and assessed in digital issues from the very beginning of their journey all the way to membership and beyond. We have extended our computer based exams (CBEs) to include Applied Skills variant exams and are planning to introduce CBEs for our Strategic Professional exams, starting March 2020. There is also the addition of a new Data Analytics unit into our Ethics and Professional Skills module. As the world gets more interconnected, an education system that encompasses soft skills such as Emotional Intelligence, Creativity, Vision will bring forth more holistic students.

These are skillsets and qualities that transcends borders.”

“Training is a vital need – would you buy a car and take it on the road without learning to drive? Digital forensics training is some of the most volatile you will encounter. This is a relatively new but burgeoning industry. Every single aspect of our lives today is touched by material we maintain digitally on a plethora of devices, loss of or breach of this data can be crippling. Vendor training in this arena comfortably co-exists with vendor neutral training. The crucial points in deciding what to include in your training vendor specific “wish list” should be its relevance and how up to date it is. Vendor neutral training is a bit trickier as the latest tool based training needs to be built on a solid basics foundation deciding what these foundations are can be difficult.”

It is becoming clear to clients that digitisation and artificial intelligence require people to have an even bigger reskilling in soft skills than in technology which increasingly is skilling itself. Britain still has creative abilities above most other countries. Singapore is modifying its disciplinarian rigour to allow for more experimenting. If I had the power, I would swop a whole cohort of NUS or SMU students for one term with a similar cohort from Cambridge or Oxford. The results would be profound. Interdependence is being recognised as the only basis for a world required to change at the pace we now are. Technology and its fallout is demanding speeds ten thousand times what was required ten years ago. Only bold moves like the one I suggest will see us safely through the next decade.”

Certainly, it can no longer be the truth that a teacher is a gatekeeper of knowledge - but good teaching has never been about simply filling the pail, it has always been about lighting the fires. As technology becomes more sophisticated and more interactive, there are great opportunities for learners to augment, sometimes even replace, traditional classrooms lessons. But we are all familiar with the current narrative around 'soft' skills which are increasingly becoming understood to be 'essential' skills - these skills are much harder to learn through any online application. One cannot learn communication skills working alone with a pair of headphones on. So the advancing technology is a long way away from replacing what happens in learning communities. When I was a growing-up in the UK, the annual trip to buy school shoes before the start of every school year was somewhat of a rite of passage. Fast forward thirty years to Singapore when I am taking my little girl Izzy to buy her first pair of shoes and the experience felt a world apart from my childhood memory. Whilst there were a handful of shops selling school shoes, they carried very little stock, with huge mark-ups on prices and a complete lack of measurement expertise, so finding school shoes felt like an impossible task.

I called my friend Nicola for advice and she explained most people took an extra suitcase back home to stock up on school shoes over the summer holidays.

We soon realised lots of our friends were experiencing the same problem and as a result were either buying shoes online (which invariably didn’t fit and had to be returned), asking relatives to bring them out or purchasing on visits to their home countries. Most were not aware that children’s feet expand by up to a size in the tropical heat – ‘the Singapore Swell’ – so shoes purchased at home were too small within weeks of getting back to Singapore. Over a coffee in Dempsey, Nicola and I decided there was a big gap in the market and we were

going to do something about it!

Feet First Our story began with a desire to do things differently. To bring a proper measuring and fitting service to Singapore along with a huge breadth and depth of high quality school shoes.

We hand-picked shoes to suit our tropical climate from the top three European school shoe manufacturers, choosing styles which were lightweight yet durable. Our Ricosta shoes have a dry-fit insole (more akin to the inside of a trainer) and our Petasil manufacturer changed the lining of the shoes we chose to ensure the colour didn’t bleed onto children’s socks in the heat.

We recruited the ex-CEO of Clarks in Australia to train our team of ten at launch and appointed Helen Crawford and her colleague Rob from The Osteopathy and Podiatry Centre in Singapore to be our consulting podiatrists. They have helped advise us on the shoes and trainers we have selected, trained us in children’s foot health and run free mini podiatry consultations in the shop every month for our customers.

To cater to the 20,000 children at the International schools in Singapore mandated to wear black leather school shoes, we imported 8000 pairs of school shoes in our first year which meant we could keep prices in line with the same styles in the UK and Australia. We sell shoes to children aged 3 – 18 years old so our range starts at dinky size 24/7UK through to a whopping 48EU/13UK and in widths ranging from E, F and G. All our shoes are stored in our 1,500 sq ft airconditioned warehouse to prevent the

In year two we extended our range to offer ASICS kids trainers, football boots and netball shoes, recommended by our podiatrists as the most supportive sports shoes for children on the market.

Our aim was to make life easier for busy mums by having their children’s feet measured for school and sports shoes at the same time and in the same place.

The ‘Shoe Ladies’, as we are now known as, branched out to offer a fantastic range of high quality school uniform in our third year – day wear, sports wear and accessories – so we can now offer schools and parents a full complement of high quality uniform from top to toe.

We have already been appointed by St Joseph’s Institution International Elementary School as their school uniform provider and are hoping more schools will follow in their footsteps.

Standing for something special From the very first moment we talked about Ten Feet Tall, we wanted our business to stand for something special. We established our Shoe Bank and asked customers to bring their old

school or sports shoes back to us when then they come to buy new ones.

We’ve collected over 2000 pairs since launch and sent them to children in Indonesia, Cambodia, Thailand and India. Covering the soles of feet helps prevent parasitic absorption, which is known to have caused widespread gastrointestinal issues in South East Asia.

The Unforeseen Danger of Longevity

By Ashley Jones, Senior Financial Planner, The Fry Group We spend many years accumulating the means to retire in comfort, but seldom consider how much might be needed to fund our retirement.

Having a pension is something we all agree is important. But do we know enough about the assumptions behind how the scheme is structured and whether it will be adequate for our retirement needs?

When thinking about pensions, one key consideration is how the demographics of the global population are changing. As people live longer and start work later, a significant shift is taking place which is causing policymakers and pension providers to re-examine accepted models of retirement and investment as the proportion of retirees vs. people in work changes.

The growth in numbers of people entering tertiary education means the average age of people starting work has increased significantly. In the post-war years the assumption was that working life would bgean at 16. Today most begin work in their early 20s, with even non-graduates entering the workforce at 18 or 19. This means the number of years where income is sufficient to build up a savings plan are being squeezed.

Late starters

More living longer King George V sent the first 100th-birthday message to a British national in 1917. With improvements in healthcare and living standards increasing our longevity, British centenarians now receive a message from the Queen on their 100th and 105th birthdays – and every following year.

According to a recent article in The Telegraph, in 2014 the Department for Work and Pensions took on more people to expand the Centenarian Office in Whitehall to handle the increasing work in keeping up with the demand for these messages.

Data from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) shows that in 2017 there were 14,430 centenarians living in Britain and 579,776 people aged 90 or over. The number of centenarians has increased by 85% over the last 15 years – and the impact on pensions and savings is significant.

In effect, the UK is getting older and an older population needs to support itself for longer – yet most people still intend to retire at 65. If you retire at this age, and your life expectancy is 100, you will most likely be retired a year for each year you have worked. This just isn’t feasible: the amount you can save during your working years will not be

to 60 in 1940. These ages remained the norm for both public and private pension assumptions until demographic changes drove a review. Consequently in 2007 the law changed to raise the state pension age to 66 if retiring between April 2024 and April 2026, then to 67 if retiring between April 2034 and April 2036 and to 68 if retiring between April 2044 and April 2046.

Changing expectations

More and more people are now opting to stay active for longer, either by working part-time or taking on lessdemanding roles following retirement to supplement their income. The fact that we are healthier into our old age makes this a viable – and even beneficial – option, with research showing that an active old age increases quality of life significantly.

Suggested responses to this growing issue include delaying the retirement age: in 1908 when the Old Age Pension was introduced, the retirement age was 70 – and this came down to 65 in 1925. Women’s retirement age was further reduced

It is clear that there is no simple answer to the question of building a sufficient capital base to fund a longer retirement.

Therefore fundamental changes are needed about how we view our retirement – and the measures we take to fund it.
