What does it mean to have integrity?

I want to begin by talking about ethics and raising several questions. What is ethics? Is ethics something we have, or is it something we do, or is it something we practice? What is the basis for ethics? How is ethics related to integrity?

In general, ethics refers to responsibility, not to legality. Moreover, though Christian ethics does have a component of feeling from the heart, it is not based on a heart feeling only. Scripture teaches that the heart is deceitful and can lead one astray. Christian ethics is a pattern of living in fellowship in maturity, that is, as human beings in society where each can be their fullest and best self for themselves and for the whole. This is an ethics of doing which emanates from a state and practice of being: being in fellowship with God and with one’s neighbor as described in Ephesians 3:18-21.

Christians assert that God is a God of integrity who does not lie and does not change with the wind at a whim. God is intentional and does all things with love.

Therefore, those who are of Christian faith must live and love as God does and commands. Ethics is not some abstract goal or plan; ethics is practical living. Neither is it without a basis; its basis is love, as meted out by Christ, who said even to those detractors in his day, “My Father works, and so I work.” (paraphrased).

We are not responsible to a set of rules, rather each person is responsible to God, to the community, including the church community, to their family, and to themselves to live a life of integrity. Christian ethics is NOT situational. If the whole of Christian ethics is situational, then there is no standard by which any ethical system or behavior may be judged or evaluated. Each person becomes a standard and a law unto him or herself, and even that person is flaky, wishy-washy, “doubleminded.”

Integrity is defined as the state of being complete or whole; morally undivided. Integrity means practicing what you preach. Ethics becomes integrity when doing becomes being. This is the transformation that is the purpose of the gift of the Holy Spirit to the church. We are transformed into being as we do. It is helpful to remember, though, that Christian integrity does not mean perfection, except as it refers to Christ. Rather it means an honesty that acknowledges and confesses sins and ethical failures with a resolve by grace in Christ to rise above such misdoings.

We need integrity because many leaders in both church and state, private and public, and of all stations

and ranks are seen making the headlines and growing in likes and followers because of their bad behavior, or poor ethics. This even occurs in places such as seminaries.

We need good examples to counter the bad ones. From the Biblical examples of the lives Rev. Dr. Ore L. Spragin, Jr., Editor of Moses, Job, and Paul, just to name a few, we can observe that they sought to live in such a way that they could be whole persons and could help members of the community to be the best they could be for themselves and each other to the glory of God. Integrity must be taught and practiced. This requires a decrease of the ego, training and education within the curricula and conventions of formal schooling, and discussion of critical issues in schools and other public places. Still, persons are subject to ethical failings and sins. Healing must take place within the individual and within the community. A loss of leadership integrity hurts not only the leader and their immediate ministry context community, but it also affects the wider view of other similar leaders. There are ripple effects.

We human beings are saved by grace and live by grace, but God’s grace is never an excuse to sin. While perfection is beyond human attainment, growing in the knowledge of ourselves and developing healthy human relationships will help us to grow in integrity. As God forgives and restores to wholeness, so restoration must be attempted within the church and world community.

Sinners, including pastors, must be forgiven. Healing must be attempted, even when this does not or will not result in a restoral of position or power.

There seems to be a practice within the church and within society of separating or making distinctions between personal, relational, and professional integrity.

Based on the actions of its members, the church often gives the appearance of confusion. We must continue to dive into the depths man’s murky existence, have meaningful conversations and debates over the issues, and come up not with ethics that appeal to the imagination of man but with the life-giving words and ethics of God. We must engage in those activities that will help to draw us close to our Lord and to each other. Let us as pastors and leaders, by the authority and help of Almighty God, live with holy integrity.

The CME Church Receives a Chris�an Paren�ng and Caregiving Ini�a�ve Grant to Launch the “Faithful Paren�ng” Program Contact: Bishop Teresa E. Snorton, email: BishopSnorton@TheCMEChurch.org August 10, 2023 The Chris�an Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church has received a grant of $1.1 million from Lilly Endowment Inc. to help establish the Faithful Paren�ng program. The project is being funded through Lilly Endowment’s Chris�an Paren�ng and Caregiving Ini�a�ve. The aim of the ini�a�ve is to help parents and caregivers share their faith and values with their children.

According to Bishop Teresa E. Snorton, the Grant Administrator, “we are especially excited because this will be a locally executed project that will gather parents in their Episcopal Districts to share stories and iden�fy their paren�ng needs through the Listening Sessions. Then in retreat se�ngs, the parents will be provided tools and resources the enhance family rituals based on the Chris�an faith and increase their confidence in sharing their faith with their children.”

Dr. Carmichael Crutchfield, General Secretary of the CME Department of Chris�an Educa�on and Dr. Evelyn Parker, Professor Emerita of Practical Theology, Perkins School of Theology – Southern Methodist University and Visiting Distinguished Professor of Practical Theology, Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary will serve as Project Coordinators. Under their leadership, the CME Episcopal Districts Christian Educators Coordinators will be trained to lead Listening Sessions and Retreats for parents of children ages 10-13 years old. Children in this age group are more vulnerable as they move into social contexts beyond the home. Parents need to be equipped with effective means of communicating, supporting and guiding these young adolescents in how to use faith and healthy values to inform daily living and decision-making.

The CME Church is one of 77 organiza�ons that are receiving grants through this compe��ve round of the ini�a�ve. Reflec�ng the diversity of Chris�anity in the United States, the organiza�ons are affiliated with mainline Protestant, evangelical, Catholic, Orthodox Chris�an and Pentecostal faith communi�es.

Many of the organiza�ons are rooted in Black church, Hispanic and Asian Chris�an tradi�ons.

“We’ve heard from many parents who are seeking to nurture the spiritual lives of their children, especially in their daily ac�vi�es, and looking to churches and other faith-based organiza�ons for support,” said Christopher L. Coble, Lilly Endowment’s vice president for religion. “These though�ul, crea�ve and collabora�ve organiza�ons embrace the important role that families have in shaping the religious development of children and are launching programs to assist parents and caregivers with this task.”

Lilly Endowment launched the Chris�an Paren�ng and Caregiving Ini�a�ve in 2022 because of its interest in suppor�ng efforts to help individuals and families from diverse Chris�an communi�es draw more fully on the wisdom of Chris�an prac�ces to live out their faith fully and well passing on a vibrant faith to a new genera�on.

The Ministerial Excellence Fund Awards $70,000 to CME Clergy Submitted by Bishop Teresa Snorton Ecumenical Representative and Development Officer In the Spring of 2023, the CME Church launched the “Bold Money Matters$: Financial Literacy for CME Clergy” program, funded by a grant from the Lilly Endowment Inc. The CME Church was one of eight recipients of the 2022 grant under their “Economic Challenges Facing Pastoral Leaders” Initiative.

The two primary goals of the Bold Money Matter$ Clergy Financial Literacy Program are: 1) To increase the financial literacy of our clergy through classes that will enhance their knowledge, resulting in benefits to their personal families and their congregations; and, 2) To provide limited direct assistance to selected clergy who have completed all eight live classes and are saddled with exorbitant financial debt.

The first series of classes were held in February and March 2023 and the series will be offered again in September and October 2023. Clergy in full connection who attend all eight class sessions are eligible to apply for the Ministerial Excellence Fund - a resource for pastors with critical or emergency financial needs. The Lilly Endowment Inc. permits the use of a portion of the grant, on a matched basis, for direct awards to CME-selected, project-trained participants who have particular kinds of debt.

For our initiative, those who participated in all eight of the live zoom sessions were invited to apply for a Ministerial Excellence Fund award ranging from $1,000 to $10,000. We are pleased to report that from our Spring 2023 sessions, 15 Clergy will be awarded a total of $70,000 to be applied against their student loan debt, medical bills, or mortgage debt. The funds for these awards come from the Lilly Endowment Inc. and from the contributions of the CME Church budget allocation and other fundraising. The Bold Money Matter$ Team, led by Bishop Teresa Snorton, sees this as a tremendous blessing to be able to help CME Clergy with financial needs.

To successfully reach a four-year goal of matched funds that will permit awarding the maximum amount of funds allowable, future fundraising efforts will be launched, such as our anticipated annual Pastor’s Appreciation Month fundraiser this fall.

Notes from the 2023 WMC Assembly Submited by Bishop Kwame Lawson Adjei Eleventh Episcopal District

Bishop K. Lawson Adjei attended the 20th Quadrennial Assembly of the Women’s Missionary Council of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church held July 25-30 in Jacksonville, Florida, in the United States of America. Martha Maruru from Kenya Region Annual Conference represented the 11th Episcopal District.

Though she was the only delegate from the Eleventh District, she made a lot of impact with her report and participation in all the deliberations of the conference.

Bishop Adjei gave a report of the 11th Episcopal District to the general assembly. He requested the missionaries to support schools, orphanages, women's empowerment, vocational schools and church planting in the region. He also preached the luncheon meditation hosted by the Fifth Episcopal District whose presiding prelate is Bishop Clarence K. Heath.

Mrs. Claudina Baker, a member of the Burundi Region Annual Conference, performed choreographic dance at the Assembly. She took advantage of the opportunity to sell her books and the proceeds of the book sales will be used to buy shoes for children in Africa. She also represented the 11th District by distributing the NewsLetters of the Region.

Proven strategies can grow any church, but what strategies are necessary for growth in the local church and community? As believers in Christ, we believe in sowing and reaping. If this is the case, then what we plant will grow. What ministry seeds are we planting and what strategies are we using to create ministry over

My question is: What strategies are necessary for growth in the local Church? Consider • •

Prayer that is strategy-centered and focused according to the will of God yields fruit. It must be specific and targeted according to the capacity of the local church in the community where the Church is present.

The Holy Ghost helps and teaches us concerning the things of Jesus the Christ.

We cannot be effective unless we yield to the Holy Ghost. Jesus meets needs when the local Church leadership operates with an outward focus on meeting the needs of others as directed by the Holy Ghost regardless to who they are.

Relevant fellowship is essential. Although we came into and will leave the world alone, we are community people. We need one another. Each of us has gifts that will help the local church function in fullness and vibrancy. Prepare for growth! If we have not prepared for growth with anticipation and expectation, then those we pray for, the hearts the Holy Ghost touches, the needs we meet, and the relevant fellowship will come in the front door and leave out another one.

The focus of ministry will take work. In fact, the leadership that focuses on the maintenance of a Church must understand it takes more energy. One reason is people become complacent with the ineffectiveness of nothingness. So, when it is time for ministry, leadership may have to pump people up to get them to do their reasonable service of ministry. Could it be the fear of ministry that causes maintenance over ministry? I am not sure, but I do realize this: the intentionality in ministry over maintenance is waiting. Why wait when Jesus said Go! The order does matter. Churches that have a ministry mindset are thriving and vibrant churches. Look at those Churches that are ministry driven and ask yourself the following questions, “What ministry seeds are we planting, and what strategies are we using to create ministry over maintenance?”

SPIRITUALITY IN THE BLACK CHURCH Written by Willa M. Ross

Contemplation is sustained sympathetic, reverent attention, It is what occurs when we take time to dwell —-Ronald L. Grimes I recently conducted an eight week pilot study on the topic of “Spirituality in the Black Church.” My continual passion and interest into the area of Contemplative Spirituality led me to offer this course to a small group of persons in local churches. The study was designed to examine and explore perspectives and perceptions of spirituality in the Black Church in addition to spiritual disciplines and practices throughout the history of the Black Church. Twelve persons participated in the study which consisted of two clergy and ten laypersons from the CME Church.

As I reflected on my own spiritual growth within the church along with my personal spirituality, I developed a yearning to trace the origins of spirituality of an enslaved people and their contemplative spirituality to worship practices of the Black church today. My reading and research led me to the development of a pilot study.

The study traces the spiritual journey of the Black church from the heritage and beliefs of its African ancestry.

From the soil of their native land, through the Middle Passage, to the first documented arrival of slaves in Jamestown, VA in 1619 — to the auction blocks—to life on the plantation—to the Invisible Institution—to the Antebellum Period—to Hush Arbors and the Second Great Awakening—from slave revolts—to abolition and the Underground Railroad—to the founding of the First African Baptist Church in 1790 to Emancipation and Reconstruction——to the founding of the African Methodist Episcopal Church (1816), the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church(1821), and the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church (1870)—to the Great Migration— to Jim Crow—to the Civil Rights movement—to the election of the first Black President—to present day.

In her book, Joy Unspeakable, Contemplative Practices of the Black Church, Dr. Barbara Holmes, “brings contemplation into focus as an important taken-for granted worship legacy in the historical black church.” She goes on to describe the Black church as a “spiritual wellspring from the time of its origins in the hush arbors until it gave impetus to the Civil Rights movement.”

I had the privilege of learning from Dr. Holmes in my seminary days at Memphis Theological Seminary. She had a way of engaging students in a manner that captivated their thoughts and imaginations which led them to immerse themselves into the experiences and spaces of the context of the specific study. Whether it was Christian Ethics, Slave Religion or Womanist Theology, she made things come alive. It was the re-reading of her book along with my personal desire to dive into the “spiritual wellspring,” that sparks my passion for contemplative spirituality and sharing with others on their spiritual journey.

The material and resources for the study also included the writings of Howard Thurman and other black theologians and authors. There was no set curriculum for the pilot and participants were encouraged to conduct their own reading and research on the various topics. The study was conducted by Zoom without any specific agenda or schedule. The sessions were held every other week, giving the participants time to reflect on the material presented in relation to their understanding of spirituality in the context of the church and in their Continued on next page September 2023 • The Christian Index

The sessions began with prayer and/or a spiritual reading from a black theologian/author; followed by a scripture related to the focus for the session or one that had been assigned for the week in between sessions. The session ended with another reading or spiritual practice.

Although the participants had very little knowledge or expectations of what the study entailed, they were very receptive and eager to participate. Although some of the participants may have felt uncomfortable or hesitant to verbally engage; it was made known from the beginning that verbal participation was not mandatory, but solely voluntary. The feedback received through phone calls, text and emails were insightful and appreciative of the sessions.

The participants were encouraged to write/journal/draw (or in other ways) their faith journeys prior to the last session. The option was given for them to share during the session. I believe that the sharing of our spiritual journeys not only helps us as individuals to envision our own spiritual growth but to encourage and affirm the spiritual growth of others along the path. More importantly, the sharing of our faith journeys affirm and attest to the communal participation of the body of saints, along with the spiritual impact of the Black Church and its legacy.

I am thankful for all of the participants who were intentional in their commitment to be a part of this pilot study. I am thankful for their attentiveness to the readings, the material presented, the discussions and their participation in the prayers, scripture readings, and spiritual readings. I admire their authenticity in receiving what was being offered to them. I am hopeful that the study impacted their spiritual growth and understanding of the Black Church in some way and look forward to their feedback which will provide insight for further development for future courses and writings on contemplative practices and spirituality.

Some of the contemplative practices such as the moan during the middle passage, silence on the auction block, drumming, dancing, prayers and worship in hush arbors, singing of spirituals, and others were explored during the study. The article entitled “Celebrating Our Roots Then and Now,” by Dr. Bernice King-Strong examines and describes the “Ring Shout,” one of the contemplative practices of worship in the early Black Church.

I am thankful for the leading of the Holy Spirit in enabling me to present and carry out the sessions.

I found this article to be very interesting and fulfilling as I looked for something to write about. What do we mean when we say content? Content with my job, content with my church, content with my home, content with my family, or content with my education? Contentment is not being satisfied with what we have; it is trusting God for what we don’t see, feel, hear, want or need. We trust in what God says in his word. In the word of God it says, we can have what we want if we ask in Jesus’ name.

No matter what God blesses us with, we seem to always want more, why is that? We not only want more and more, but we want the best of the best when we know most of the time we can’t afford some things. In Hebrews 13:5 (NIV) the word of God says, “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, Never will I leave you, never will I forsake you.”

The love of money brings in greed and greed breeds lust, covetousness, and shame from being in a situation of hopelessness. My mother would often tell her children, if you let yourself get in a desperate situation, then you will do desperate things which will lead to your destruction. Sometimes we get impatient and want to handle things our own way, when God has told us in Philippians 4:6-7 to be “anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

So, we can only be content with what we have when we know that we truly have God. We will be reminded that we have God when we hear and believe his voice. In John 10:27 the word says, “My sheep hear my voice, I know them and they follow me.” Contentment is to know God and to hear his voice and to follow him.

Lane College Campus Queen Makes History as the First Black in 70 Years Submitted by Mrs. Darlette Samuels Lane College Public Relations

Students at Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee are all smiles this fall semester as Miss Lane College Jada Brown made history to become the first Black to win the crown of Miss Tennessee Volunteer.

As Miss Tennessee Volunteer, Brown will serve as the Governor’s Official Spokesperson for Character Education in the state of Tennessee, and it’s sure to be a busy and exciting year. Brown will accompany Tennessee Governor Bill Lee to regional and statewide festivals and events throughout the year.

She will also travel across the state on a speaking tour that promotes character education. For her school tour, Brown plans to champion the character trait of “Care.”

Brown says an HBCU education has reminded her that loving even those with whom we disagree, treating people with kindness, and never being mean or hurtful are messages she is excited to share with others during the coming year.

Miss Tennessee Volunteer is a service-oriented scholarship program. The pageant honors young women who demonstrate a genuine commitment to positively impacting their communities through volunteer work and embody the values of service, compassion, and leadership. In addition, Brown will serve as a Goodwill Ambassador for the newly formed Miss America Volunteer partnership with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.

Brown was crowned Miss Lane College in March 2023. She captured the Miss Tennessee Volunteer title on Saturday, July 29, 2023, at the Carl Perkins Civic Center in Jackson, Tennessee, the birthplace of the CME Church.

The statewide competition is an annual event for Jackson, Tennessee, and with everyone excited to emerge from pandemic-driven social distancing, this year’s pageant was busy. Lane’s yearly homecoming celebration remains the community’s largest tourism event. However, during July, the statewide pageant brings the city of Jackson to a buzz as women from across the state compete for the crown.

The first time was the charm for Miss Lane College as this was her first year of competition in the statewide pageant and her first year as Miss Lane College. Brown wowed the judges in five areas of competition – talent, private interview, swimsuit, evening gown, and on-stage Q&A. During the multiday competition, contestants were narrowed to ten, each advancing to the evening gown competition. From there, five were selected as finalists who answered an on-stage question before the ultimate decision.

Miss Lane College Jada Brown was crowned the winner, making history as the first African American to win the title. In addition to thousands of dollars in scholarships and prizes, the competition winner is awarded a five-point crown that symbolizes the five principles of the Miss Tennessee Volunteer organization: Scholarship, Education, Responsibility, Volunteerism, and Empowerment (S.E.R.V.E.).

Championing the platform, “The Beauty Within Our Hands: Teaching American Sign Language,” Brown highlighted American Sign Language (ASL) and her experience growing up with a stepsister in a deaf and hard-of-hearing home. Her performance in the talent portion of the competition entailed a theatrical ASL interpretation of the song, “This is Me,” from The Greatest Showman and was met with roaring applause.

“I am thrilled to represent Tennessee and my contestant class as Miss Tennessee Volunteer. This is the opportunity of a lifetime. Growing up, little Jada didn’t have any representation, so now, as the first-ever African American Miss Tennessee Volunteer, I’m so excited to be that representation for our youth and to let them know that no matter where they come from, how much money they have, where they go to school, that they can achieve their goals,” Brown says.

Brown is a 21-year-old S-STEM scholar and a senior at Lane College seeking a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in biology and a minor in chemistry. Over the next year as Miss Tennessee Volunteer, Brown is expected to speak to school children and civic clubs across the state. Once her year of service is complete, she will use her scholarship earnings to pursue a dental healthcare professional degree and plans to become a dental hygienist.

Brown is one of many STEM majors at Lane College smiling this fall about their futures in healthcare and STEM careers. The programs at Lane have received over $4 million in grant and supplemental funding and made dozens of STEM improvements to the curriculum. * In collaboration with the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Lane students now have a direct pathway to continue their education in nursing. In addition, CVS Health recently opened a Workforce Innovation and Talent Center on the campus.

In partnership with Arizona State University, Lane is also home to the Luminosity Lane College – an interdisciplinary research and development lab driven by a hand-selected team of high-performing students.

These teams design, build, and deploy novel solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges.

LANE COLLEGE IMPROVES ENERGY EFFICIENCY Lane College, a historically black college in Jackson, Tennessee, has undergone campus-wide upgrades to address energy needs as well as student and faculty comfort. The liberal arts institution, which has been providing accessible and affordable education for nearly 150 years, partnered with Entegrity to tackle deferred maintenance and invest in the areas where students spend the most time.

The scope of work encompassed over 600,000 square feet of campus facilities and included an LED lighting retrofit, water conservation measures, and HVAC upgrades to maximize energy savings. Entegrity also installed new aluminum windows to improve envelope efficiency and update the aesthetics of the campus’s buildings without compromising their historical appeal. These energy upgrades will save the college more than $550,000 a year on maintenance and utility costs.

Utilizing the savings produced by efficiency upgrades, Lane College has taken the opportunity to implement infection control and improve the indoor air quality of campus buildings to help ensure student safety.

We wanted to address these changes creatively while also building a better environment for the students. This project allows us to focus on our current students while preparing our facilities for the future graduates of Lane College for years to come.

Message to the Missionaries

at the Quadrennial Assembly of 2023 Submitted by Erianna Sims Member, Phyllis H. Bedford

I just want to take a few moments to talk about something I think might benefit everyone in this room tonight.

Since we are at the 20th quadrennial assembly, I have one question for the women missionaries. But I’m sure everyone in here can answer the question just the same ... Are you working to serve God, or please other people?

So, that’s our topic for a few moments.

I’m sure everyone here today can agree that at the heart of each of us, whether currently or in the past, there is or was a yearning to be accepted ... an inclination to crowd pleasing or people pleasing. Now some of you might be thinking, “This girl has lost her mind. She just talking to talk at this point.” You might not think you fit the category. And if that’s not you, there are numerous actors and actresses, politicians, business owners, or even family members you know who are driven by this desire to please other people.

We as human beings are so instructed in the methods of “how to win friends” or “how to influence people” that we can instinctively put a priority on impressing others and pleasing others front and center in our lives.

Now I would never stand up here and tell you that pleasing others is just outright wrong.

God created us as social beings. The Bible tells you all about the honor that will come to you if you live your life in peace and harmony with Jesus Christ and others. We are expected to love God with everything within us, and we are expected to love our neighbors, other human beings, and love ourselves. This implies a relationship in which we do that which pleases others.

But oftentimes this God-given social instinct becomes a compulsion that separates us from our primary relationship of faith in the Lord. When we allow this

idea of “people pleasing” to drive our lives, we run into trouble every time.

It’s hard to find a more tragic figure, than the one who is trying to walk the course that will please the crowd.

Whether you refer to contemporary life, secular history or even the pages in the Bible, there are countless examples of men and women like this.

Let’s take Pontius Pilate as an example. You all are familiar with that evening in which Jesus was betrayed by Judas Iscariot (uh skeh ree it) into the hands of the Jewish leaders. He was dragged before the high priest Caiaphas (Kai ya fus), and the next morning was placed before Pilate, the official political representative of Rome. Accusations were made against Jesus, attempting to turn the Roman ruler against him.

Pontius Pilate was intelligent and could see right through it all … BUT even though he knew Jesus was innocent, in the end we saw Barrabas was released and Jesus was delivered like a Little Caesar’s pizza … hot and ready for a whipping and crucifixion.

So I ask you missionaries again ... are you a people pleaser? Or are you working to serve the Lord?

I want to live a Christian life but what will friends say?

Drinking problems and drugs /parties and invites.

The Bible reminds us that we should not attempt to be all things for all people, unless it’s in an attempt to bring glory to the name of Jesus Christ. Crowd pleasers are referred to as double minded people.

Can you serve God AND serve everything that is anti-god in modern society? Can you serve those two masters?

We as humans get so wrapped up in this concept of majority rule, and forget that although that might be amazing for government, it is not beneficial for Continued on next page September 2023 • The Christian Index

Submissions Continued from previous page individuals. Majority rule in areas of morality and faith lead to the destruction of the soul of a person and ultimately society. It is important to remember that the will of the majority fluctuates in a way that is completely inconsistent with divine revelation.

him, I guarantee you’ll know what’s right. The right time, the right season, the right choice, everything.

Hold on to the truth in God’s love. No earthly love could possibly compare to God’s infinite love, and don’t allow that urge or that yearning for love on earth to distract you from what’s really important.

A minister who tries to please all of his congregation cannot be a prophet bringing the word of God in clarity … because the word of God will offend some people.

It will offend the sinner who will not admit his sin, no matter what it be.

Stick by your convictions or beliefs. Even if it seems to cost you things that you’ve learned to glamorize or long for. Trust that God has better in store for you, and you won’t need to submit to others or allow others to influence you, causing you to miss out on God’s gift for you.

A pastor who does not faithfully recite the whole Gospel of God’s ability to change your life, and your responsibility to serve fellow humans in Jesus name, is only reinforcing the state in which your spirit is already in.

And finally, be aware of your associations. Be careful who you allow into your life, and who includes you in theirs. You can look at your life as a citizenship in the kingdom of Jesus Christ. You’re an ambassador, carrying out his orders, looking forward to the day in which you will spend eternity with him. Your award and applause is NOT of this world. It is indeed in heaven, where Christ shall say, “Well done, thy good and faithful servant.”

So how do you fix these people pleasing ways?

For starters, give yourself to Jesus 100 percent. Let him be the light of your life and your constant guide. Put him first. Make Him the one you want to please the most, and let the earthly pleasures fall behind him.

Next, expose yourself to the discipline of his will for you. Grow your knowledge of him that you find in reading the Bible or personal sharing in prayer. When you find yourself uncertain or dealing with a situation that could possibly earn the applause of others, Ask, “Is this right?” And not, “Is this popular?” If you have truly studied his word and put your trust and faith in

Everyone has a set time to leave this Earth, and a big question to think about is ... “Did I remember my Creator and consider pleasing him most important?”

I don’t know about you all, but as much as earthly validation and applause is liked, I would much rather prefer to exchange that for my Lord’s praise, “Well done, thy good and faithful servant. Enter into your eternal rest.”

Zion CME Church who was re-elected to the office of 1st Vice Lay Leader of the New York-Washington Region; and Sis. Theresa Bell of Calvary CME Church who was duly elected to serve as the President of the Women’s Missionary Society for the New York-Washington Region. Helton, 67th elected Bishop and presiding over the Tenth Episcopal District. We also had the pleasure of Bro. Anthony Smoakes, General Secretary of Ministry to Men of the CME Church, and Rev. Dr. Paul Brown, President/Dean of Phillips School of Theology (ITC).

Congratulations to Heaven Pritchett of St. Matthews CME Church, Twin Oaks, PA (Rev. William Irons, Pastor), who represented the Philadelphia District as the winner of the essay writing contest for the Dr. Nellie B. King Scholarship. Miss Pritchett was represented at the luncheon by her grandmother, Sis. Jean Howie, Lay Leader of St. Matthew. Heaven will be attending Delaware State University in the fall. Congratulations to our beautiful winner and future of our church.

I want to take this opportunity to thank the Lay Leaders of the Philadelphia District and those members who attended the Regional Lay Luncheon, honoring our youth leaders. The Philadelphia District went beyond the call of duty with our support of the luncheon. This event funds the scholarships that are given to the young people to further educate them in college or trade school.

Mother’s Day Brunch in Milledgeville Hosted by Trinity CME Church Missionaries Submitted by Vivian Smith WMS President, Trinity CME Church

The Women’s Missionary Society opened wide the doors of Trinity CME Church, Milledgeville, Georgia to host our annual Mother’s Day Brunch held near noonday, Saturday, May 13, 2023.

There was laughter, lingering hugs, and friends sharing news of joy and of sorrow. “Oh, what a fellowship. Oh, what a joy divine.”

The Mother’s Day Brunch was the ministry of the late Ms. Joan M. Lundy, Director of Senior Adults. She had co-chaired the event with the late Ms. Geneva B. Davis who provided glorious celebrations. Both longtime missionaries enticed the Women’s Missionary Society to also co-chair the event.

Ms. Vivian Smith, WMS president, as well as members, were proud to host approximately fifty community mothers, two sons, and yes, grandchildren at this year’s brunch. Our menu of spaghetti, salads, and desserts was an impressive feast. The Mother’s Day Brunch was bursting with activity, including an inspiring speaker, Beverly Jones of Macon, GA, and live entertainment. Our own Trinity member, Ms. Emily Davis, Chairwoman of the Baldwin County Board of Commissioners, and our newly elected African American city councilwoman, Shonya Mapp, presented the WMS with a Certificate of Recognition and a Proclamation respectively signed by the Commissioner Chairwoman and Ms. Mary Parham-Copelan, the Mayor of Milledgeville, that proclaimed every 2nd Saturday in the month of May as the Joan Mapp Lundy & Geneva Bell Davis Annual Mother’s Day Brunch Day. We were honored by the president of the Macon-Barnesville District Missionary Society, Mrs. Carol Pounds. She stated it was an awesome program in the memories of the late Ms. Joan M. Lundy and Ms. Geneva B. Davis.

A seed planted. Mrs. Lundy expressed her wish that the Mother’s Day Brunch be continued after her death. After the dawning of a new season and with Covid-19 restrictions behind us, Trinity CME Church is proud to report that the WMS of Trinity CME Church is committed to continuing the Joan M. Lundy and Geneva B. Davis Mother’s Day Brunch.

Reflections on My First Year as a Pastor Submitted by David Pinner Murchison Temple CME Church Indianapolis, Indiana

Becoming a pastor is a profound calling that requires dedication, compassion, and a deep sense of purpose. As I reflect on my first year in this sacred role, it has been a transformative journey filled with both challenges and rewarding experiences. I will share some of the key lessons I have learned and the personal growth I have experienced during this significant milestone in my life.

One of the most crucial aspects of my first year as a pastor was building meaningful relationships with my congregation and the community. I recognized the importance of establishing trust, actively listening, and demonstrating empathy. Through pastoral care visits, counseling sessions, and community events, I sought to connect with individuals, understand their needs, and provide support. Building these relationships not only allowed me to serve as a spiritual guide but also enabled me to create a sense of community and belonging, fostering a stronger and more united congregation.

As a pastor, I encountered various challenges that tested my resilience and adaptability. From addressing conflicts within the congregation to managing unexpected crises, each situation demanded a delicate balance of leadership, humility, and grace. I learned the importance of seeking guidance from mentors and leaning on the support of fellow pastors. These challenges not only deepened my faith but also strengthened my ability to make sound decisions under pressure and handle the diverse needs of the congregation.

Delivering sermons and leading Bible studies were central aspects of my role as a pastor. I discovered that effective preaching requires diligent preparation, a deep understanding of Scripture, and the ability to connect its teachings to the lives of the congregation. It was a humbling experience to witness the impact of a well-crafted sermon, as it inspired and encouraged individuals on their spiritual journey. Teaching Bible studies allowed me to foster a love for learning and equip the congregation with the tools to grow in their faith.

My first year as a pastor was not only about serving others but also about personal growth. This role challenged me to continuously reflect on my own beliefs, values, and spirituality. I discovered the importance of self-care and finding a healthy work-life balance to prevent burnout. I also recognized the significance of ongoing education, seeking opportunities for professional development, and engaging in theological dialogue with peers. The first year as a pastor has been a transformative experience, shaping my character, deepening my faith, and cultivating a greater sense of purpose and humility.

The first year as a pastor is a journey of growth, self-discovery, and service. It requires building meaningful relationships, navigating challenges with grace, delivering impactful sermons, and fostering personal development. This milestone in my life has reaffirmed my passion for serving others and deepened my understanding of the profound responsibility entrusted to pastors. As I embark on the coming years, I am grateful for the lessons learned, the relationships formed, and the opportunity to continue walking alongside the congregation, offering guidance, compassion, and hope.

Peter Wagner, the world-renowned scholar and church growth expert, has written several books on the WAVES OF THE SPIRIT: ON THE CREST OF THE WAVE, SPIRITUAL POWER AND CHURCH GROWTH, and THE THIRD WAVE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. He describes the “First Wave” as beginning on January 1, 1901, in Topeka, Kansas. It happened at the Bethel Healing School headed by Charles Parham. When hands were laid on a student and she began to speak in tongues, this started the Pentecostal movement. It spread to Azusa Street in Los Angeles, California, in 1906 under the leadership of W. J. Seymore and spread around the world. What did not take hold in the Methodist Churches, found full expression among those seeking the Holy Spirit.

The “Second Wave,” according to Wagner, came during the middle of the century (around 1951) and was called “The New Pentecostalism” or “The Charismatic Movement.” Evangelist Oral Roberts laid hands on the sick for the first time on National television.

The ”Third Wave,” according to Wagner, is the “Wave” that we are in right now. Known as “The Wave of the Holy Spirit,” this “Wave” is sweeping throughout the world today.

As a retired Methodist Pastor, I felt that the “Wave” had bypassed the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.

That is, until I attended the 20th Quadrennial Assembly of the Women’s Missionary Council meeting in Jacksonville, Florida.

I had wondered if somehow the sense of expectancy born of the conviction that the Living God is in the world today transforming lives was missing somewhere along the way. And then, right there in the Missionary meeting, the Holy Spirit moved upon me to add a “Fourth Wave” to Wagner’s list. I call it “The Fourth Wave of the Holy Spirit in the CME Church.” Allow me to explain this “Wave” to the best of my ability.

First of all, I perceive that it is a new “Lay Movement.” It is not a group of elderly men meeting once per month for a Prayer Breakfast and business. No, this is a group of young men and women whom the ancient seer Joel predicted. “Your sons and daughters would prophesy.” These new unordained Missionaries have 28

their roots that run back to the Day of Pentecost found in Acts 2. I saw them coming together from across Episcopal Districts, from various Regions, across various age groups. Some were single and some were married. Some were students and some were professionals. But all were sincerely seeking the Holy Spirit.

Secondly, those of my generation wore dark suits, black ties, black shoes, a large cross around our neck and carried a large Bible under our arms. But these young Pentecostal, T-shirt, baggy-pants and gym shoe-wearing young people carried only a phone in their hands. They felt like the Psalmist felt when he said, “As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth our souls after Thee, O God. Our souls thirst for God, for the Living God; when shall we come and appear before God?” (Psalm 42:1-2).

Yes, they will listen to great Meditations such as the one that thrilled our hearts delivered by Mrs. Christine Buchanan! Yes, they will listen to great sermons such as the one delivered by our Host Bishop C. K. Heath at the Communion Service! Yes, Bible teachers like Presiding Elder Lavisha Williams will have their full attention!

Yes, they will be all ears when hearing a message such as delivered by Dr. Louise Baker Brown at the banquet! But then, they won’t stop there. No, no, they will be like the Believers at Berea. Scripture says, “These were more noble than those in Thessalonica in that they received the Word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.” (Acts 17:11). Yes, they will surely check you out to see if you are for real or just “sounding brass and tinkling symbols.” (1st Corinthians 13:1).

Finally, this “New Wave” of young, Spirit-filled sons and daughters of the Living God is like a Mighty Army rising up with the power to break every chain. So “Tell me, who can stand before them when they call on that great Name, JESUS?” Any attempt to hinder this “New Wave” will be met with the words that the great teacher of the Law, Gamaliel, gave to the Council at Jerusalem.

When the Apostles had wrought many signs and wonders and were brought before the council, he warned them “to refrain from these men, and let them alone; for if this council or this work be of men, it will come to nothing; But if it be of God, you cannot overthrow it, lest perhaps ye be found even to fight against God.” (Acts 5:38-39).

SO LET THE POWER WAVE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT SWEEP OVER ALL OF US IN JESUS’ NAME!

The Macon/Barnesville District Women’s Missionary Society had a praiseworthy and gratifying 2022-2023 conference year. The missionaries were readily involved in the following projects: •

Supported and donated monetary aid to the Meals for Millions helping to feed the hungry.

Invested in our children’s education by presenting scholarships.

Presented an amazing Women In Blue Program to aid with our treasury.

Prayed, listened, encouraged, and spoke God’s word daily.

South Georgia Region: A Stewardess Ministry Spotlight Submitted by Lucy Hazel Dunn

On October 22, 2022, and June 4, 2023, the Stewardess Ministry of the South Georgia Region of the Sixth Episcopal District, where Mrs. Hilda Murphy Buie is President and Bishop Thomas L. Brown, Sr. is the Presiding Prelate, shared toilet tissue and paper towels with four Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Churches on the South Georgia Region and Faith Community Outreach Center in Albany, Georgia.

In October, the Stewardess Ministry gathered at the Christian Training Institute at Hines Memorial Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Albany, Georgia, and brought items to donate to Mount Olive CME Church in Newton, Georgia, and Brown Chapel CME Church in Sylvester, Georgia, and Faith Community in Albany, Georgia.

On June 4, 2023, the Stewardess Ministry observed Connectional Stewardess Day at Saint Luke Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Thomasville, Georgia, and donated more paper towels and tissue to Saint Luke and Centennial Christian Methodist Episcopal Churches in Scotland, Georgia.

These churches donated tissue and paper towels to residents in their community. To serve the table of the poor is one of the Stewardess’ duty. Blessings to the Stewardess Ministry of the South Georgia Region and Mrs. Hilda Buie.

Mother Emanuel Holds Historic Organ Dedication and Memorial Groundbreaking On July 22, 2023, the congregation of Mother Emanuel led by Rev. Eric S. C. Manning held a service to dedicate the church's restored historic organ and break ground for the Mother Emanuel 9 Memorial.

The organ was purchased in 1908 and was the largest owned by a Black congregation in Charleston.

According to the church website, "The pipe organ of Mother Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church holds precious memories for its membership. Our pipe organ plays a vital role in the church’s outreach to the broader community in sacred concerts, music, and other musical and cultural programs."

Bishop Samuel L. Green preached the sermon for the dedication service sermon "You can't have my music!" (Psalm 137:1-4). During the service, a brief hymn medley was played on the organ to the delight of all those assembled.

After the service, the ground was broken for the Emanuel 9 Memorial, designed by architect Michael Arad. The memorial will sit on the church property and is slated to be completed by November 2024.

The project's cost will be approximately 4 million dollars.

Professor appointed to esteemed global Church commission Submitted by Jo Milne University of Aberdeen

A University of Aberdeen Professor has been re-elected to the most senior ecclesial theological body in the world.

Professor Tom Greggs, the University’s Marischal Chair of Divinity, has been appointed as one of 40 committee members of the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches (WCC).

The Faith and Order Commission has a history spanning more than a century and emerged from the Faith and Order Movement in 1910.

Following two World Conferences, held in 1927 (Lausanne) and 1937 (Edinburgh), upon formation of the World Council of Churches in 1948, the movement transformed into the Commission on Faith and Order of the WCC. Today the WCC brings together churches, denominations and church fellowships in more than 120 countries and territories throughout the world, representing over 580 million Christians and including most of the world's Orthodox churches, scores of Anglican, Baptist, Lutheran, Methodist and Reformed churches, as well as many United and Independent churches.

While the bulk of the WCC's founding churches were European and North American, today most member churches are in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America, the Middle East and the Pacific. There are now 352 member churches.

It brings together ‘global, regional and sub-regional, national and local churches seeking unity, a common witness and Christian service’.

The Commission also incorporates the participation of the Roman Catholic Church and other non-member churches of the WCC in the organising and staffing of its activities within the overall framework of the WCC. The Commission on Faith and Order ‘undertakes theological studies so that the churches may reach sufficient agreement across their diversity and grow in mutual care and accountability’.

Professor Greggs said: “I am delighted to be re-elected as one of 40 committee members who oversee the theological statements and positions for the World Council of Churches.

“It is, in this way, the most senior, ecclesial theological body in the world and covers over 500 million people across the world in more than 110 countries with more than 350 global member churches.

“It is an honour to serve on this body and a particular honour to be reappointed. It is a major, global avenue for impact.”

Obituaries

Joining the Great Cloud

Mrs. Birdia Mae Patterson Johnson Berdia Mae Patterson Johnson was born August 25th, 1938, in Oakland, Tennessee, to Alfred Patterson, Sr. and Tom Ella Tharp Patterson. She departed this life, June 11th, 2023. She professed a hope in Christ at an early age and joined Oakland CME Church in Oakland, Tennessee, later known as Cleaves Memorial CME Church. She served faithfully in several positions through the course of her life-long membership in the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church: Sunday School Superintendent and School Teacher, Sanctuary Choir President and Member, Trustee, and Women's Missionary Society Member.

She was an Eastern Star, with Jubelum Chapter Order of the Eastern Star #79, Oakland, Tennessee. She was united in holy matrimony to the late Alexander Johnson, Jr. for 25 years. Three children were born to this union, Michael Anthony, Audrey Maxine and Althia Marie. Their bond was unbreakable.

She was a dedicated educator for the Tipton County School System, working at Tabernacle and Crestview Elementary schools, and Fayette and Haywood County schools, for approximately 39 years. Her passion was kindergarten education and she continued to mentor young teachers well after her retirement. She valued self-improvement and completed bachelor's degree studies at Lane College, the Tennessee Teacher Career Ladder Program, and the Master's Degree program at Trevecca Nazarene University.

In her later years, Berdia followed (under watch-care) her son-in-law's (Reverend Roland Johnson, Jr.) and daughter's (Audrey) pastoral ministries at Prospect #2 CME Church in Stanton, Tennessee; Trinity CME Church, Collins Chapel

CME Church, and Winrow St. Paul CME Church in Memphis, Tennessee until her passing.

She considered her late husband' church, Belmont CME Church, Mason, Tennessee, a second church home. She frequently fellowshipped there and supported their ministries, as well, throughout the years.

She leaves to cherish her memory: one son, Michael (Lorraine) Johnson of Spring Hill, Tennessee; two daughters, Audrey (Roland) Johnson and Althia Marie Johnson, of Memphis, Tennessee; one sister, Gertrude P. Milner of Memphis, Tennessee; two brothers, Alfred (Ruth) Patterson Jr. of Southfield, Michigan, and Lee Andrew (Georgia) Patterson of Nashville, Tennessee; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a host of nephews, nieces, relatives, and friends.

The CME Church receives $1.25 million Grant for Nurturing Children Initiative

Contact: Bishop Teresa Jefferson-Snorton, Email: BishopJeffersonSnorton@TheCMEChurch.org The Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church has received a five-year grant of $1.25 million from Lilly Endowment Inc. to help establish the “Reimagining Children’s Ministry” program. The program is funded through Lilly Endowment’s Nurturing Children Through Worship and Prayer Initiative. The aim of the national initiative is to support faith-based organizations as they help children grow in faith and deepen their relationships with God. Through this program, the CME Church will work with a selected group of local congregations over a four year period to strengthen their children’s ministry and children’s participation in worship and prayer.

Participating congregations will also receive mini-grants to purchase educational materials and technology for their children’s ministry. In addition, the program will create liturgical resources that are both culturally sensitive and adaptable for use with children with learning disabilities. Beginning in 2024, the program will release a new resource packet each year of the grant and these resources will be available for use in all local congregations.

Bishop Teresa Jefferson-Snorton, the Grant Administrator stated: “Through this program we will establish best practices for effective ministry to children. By focusing on worship and prayer, we ensure that the next generation is equipped with a spiritual understanding of the faith and have the opportunity to actively engage in congregational life. Finally, in the development of resources, we will be utilizing a variety of formats – written, audio-visuals and technology applications – for ministry, instruction and activities with children.” The program will work in collaboration with the CME Department of Christian Education and Formation and its General Secretary, Dr. Carmichael Crutchfield.

Lilly Endowment is making nearly $32 million in grants through this invitational round of the Nurturing Children initiative. The grants are funding efforts to help organizations develop new and/or enhance existing programs that support congregations as they design worship services and prayer practices that more intentionally and fully engage children. The CME Church is one of 26 organizations taking part in the initiative. They represent and serve congregations in a broad spectrum of Christian traditions, including mainline Protestant, evangelical, Catholic, Pentecostal, Black church, Hispanic and Asian traditions. Many organizations also serve churches that describe themselves as nondenominational, ecumenical and multidenominational.

Lilly Endowment launched the Nurturing Children initiative in 2022 as part of its commitment to support efforts that strengthen the religious education and formation of children and enhance the vitality of Christian congregations.

Addi�onal Informa�on about the Nurturing Children’s Grant: A message from Bishop Teresa Jefferson-Snorton Thank you for all the interest in the most recent grant received by the CME Church! I am overjoyed to see so many of our churches interested in developing or expanding their ministry to children. Below are some basic facts about this grant and the program it will fund.

1. The name of the CME program is “Reimagining Children’s Ministry”. This program will be part Lilly Endowment, Inc.’s “Nurturing Children Through Worship and Prayer” ini�a�ve.

2. The program design is very strict in order to meet the funder’s criteria.

3. The program focus is on prayer and worship with children ages 6-11. An addi�onal focus is on how to include children with learning disabili�es.

4. Our primary goal is to create resources that can be used by all churches throughout the denomina�on. These resources will be culturally sensi�ve, age appropriate, inclusive and consistent with CME beliefs. The program’s aim is to study what types of resources best meet the needs of children ages 6-11, including those with learning disabili�es.

5. We have only received no�ce of the award. No funds have actually been received yet.

6. There will be no funding available for needs or requests that fall outside of the grant’s program design.

7. The program will not begin un�l Fall 2023. The first steps will be to organize all of the things needed to support the program (staff, legal documents, training materials, website, etc.)

8. Par�cipa�on in the program by 12-15 local churches will be by invita�on, although there will be a process by which local churches can express interest in par�cipa�on. No�ce of this process will be sent out in late summer 2023.

9. There will be an extensive selec�on process because the local church and its children’s ministry leadership must meet program criteria and commit to being a part of the en�re four-year study.

10. The role of par�cipa�ng churches is to assist in the development of resources materials, to use those materials in their new or current children’s ministry, and to report results that hopefully demonstrate an increase in children’s par�cipa�on in worship and in understanding and using prayer.

11. There will be small grants of around $1000 available for par�cipa�ng churches to purchase materials they need to implement the program. There are no funds available for local churches that are not a part of the study.

12. Par�cipa�on guidelines are strict because we must train par�cipa�ng church leaders, collect data and file reports on the progress of the program.

While the number of local churches who will par�cipate ac�vely in the program will be a small group, we believe all local CME Churches will see the benefits and will have access to resources that will help them reimagine their children’s ministry. The Program Development Office will con�nue to seek other grants to assist other local churches with their needs for computers, materials, etc. However, to par�cipate in any future programs or grants, local churches need to be able to demonstrate they have a sound program design, a record of good financial stewardship, and the commitment of the leadership and membership of the local church.

I am available to present a session on “Equipping Your Local Church for a BOLD Future with Faith-based Funding” to local churches, presiding elders’ districts, or annual conferences, virtually or inperson to provide further guidance.
