--2 Timothy 4:7-8 (KJV) Can you say with assurance, like Paul, that YOU have fought a good fight, Rev. Dr. Ore L. Spragin, Jr., finished YOUR course, and kept THE faith? Can you, without doubting, claim there Editor is a crown of righteousness waiting for you? Have you known the strength of the Lord in your hour of weakness? Have you been a witness for the Lord, even when it was dangerous to do so? Some of us can give a comfortable witness, but where are we when the Lord wants a voice in an uncomfortable place?

If you give the word, as a teacher or preacher; and if you serve as a witness to his worth and glory, rest assured that God shall deliver you from every evil work. If you are a faithful witness, you may have to go through some opposition or hardships, perhaps like Paul, at the hand of evil and unrighteous people who care nothing for the truth. But God will deliver and will preserve you through the Day of Judgment unto and into his everlasting kingdom. You will reap the harvest of the greatest reward.

Right now, all over the world, people are arguing, debating, scrambling, and vying for political positions and power. Everybody wants you to vote for them as the best candidate while finding fault with, and sometimes even demonizing, their opponents. They want you to focus on the earthly reward or blessings they have promised in their campaign speeches and media ads. They are fighting and seeking your help.

You should be a concerned and active citizen of the country in which you live, becoming knowledgeable and participating in whatever elections or balloting processes are available to you, through which you might help the world be more of a place where love, righteous judgment, and mercy prevail. You should also follow this up with prayers for those who are elected and chosen to positions of earthly power. For things will not always go as you desire them to go.

Thank God there is a kingdom of righteousness where your vote does NOT count, where no ballots will be counted, no fake electors considered, and no election can be stolen; a kingdom that does not depend on your strategies or strengths to establish or maintain it. Thank God for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, which is now and is forevermore, world without end. Amen.

Yes, all earthly kingdoms of every kind, democracies and republics and dictatorships and oligarchies and monarchies and autocracies, even denominations and faith bodies, shall one day be all be done away with, and the glorious and gracious kingdom of Christ shall stand forever. Don’t you want to be a part of that kingdom?

Fight a good fight. Finish your course. Keep THE faith which is in Christ Jesus. Receive the crown.

“From My Perspective…”

“Are you ready for the 4th Quarter and to finish up strong?”

When we reach the 4th quarter and approach the end of the game (years end), I get excited, a little anxious, and focused. I begin thinking about how I can have a sense of victory and finish the year strong! I ask the questions, how am I doing with my progress here at the end of the game? How can I finish up strong?

Well, we have all found ourselves changing our 2022 game plans at least once (perhaps more than once) this year. With the unpredictability of the lingering, and perhaps here to stay COVID-19, great swings in the stock market, and worker scarcity, there has been reasons to make changes. And yet others are enjoying an extraordinarily good year (to you, congratulations).

Whichever camp you belong to, you are probably not on pace to meet all the goals you established for 2022. Well, this is a wonderful time to analyze and revise your goals here in the fourth quarter to finish strong.

Focus on that goal that is most important and that you do best. As pastors and leaders in the church, and in life in general, we wear many hats, but still there are some activities that generates more success than others. Start and focus on that activity. Do not let yourself get caught up thinking all the goals you set back in January and said you had to accomplish are of equal importance. They are not.

A mentor once told me to keep the main thing, the main thing. Time has a strange way of getting away from us in the fourth quarter, around the holidays, so now’s the time to really get things done. Put serious business (the main thing) first for the next 45 days, and then you will be in position to put family and friends first over the holidays and finish strong.

Finally, do not forget to enjoy yourself and savor this moment. A new game (2023) will be starting before you know it!

BE BOLD: Face Now-Embrace Next-See New The Art of Discovery in the Local Church Pushing buttons is more than the act of doing. It is the intentional act of thinking based on the outcomes we wish to see. For example, there are those who know what buttons to push to make you angry, motivated, or even joyful. The intent is not only to produce a desired reaction out of you but also to determine who knows what buttons to push to get you thinking about singular or plural issues. For example, how can we commit ourselves to be Christ’s true Church in worship? The question itself is interesting and has a plethora of responses which we can consider. However, no one person has the answer; it must be collective.

Therefore, can our quadrennial theme BE BOLD: Face Now-Embrace Next-See New assist us in becoming the true church of Christ? We must see that we truly are the Church without walls, the Church without separation, the Church without our deeply embedded traditions, closed hearts, and minds. The Church of love and inclusion seeks the approval of God. How badly do we want to be the Church of Salvation, Liberation, Education, and Evangelization? Let us embrace the art of discovering the facts of who we are as a Church by sharing the love of God and the love of neighbors. So, to answer my own question, I offer this look and closer examination of the local church.

First, the church must be obedient and faithful to the call of God in worship. Second, the church in worship must become a glass church with glass walls showing its vulnerability while lifting Christ. The community, like the church, must not just gather, but come together with purpose and expectation. Lastly, the obedience of all who gather in worship is recognized as a characteristic of God’s people. We come from various walks of life, backgrounds, and experiences which we must recognize and bring to the Church as well as the love of God in Christ.

Nonetheless, we cannot function as if our discovery is everyone else's discovery. We must commit ourselves to Christ in worship. What does that commitment look like? The commitment to be authentic without the weight and expectation of others to worship God a certain way. We can accept differences while appreciating them, allowing the love of God to be shared and manifested inside the walls of the local church and then expressed to the church without walls.

This then will aid us in the "art of discovery" in the local church.

We are The Christian Methodist Episcopal Church recognizing the importance of Christ in our daily lives.

The Passing of the Peace Carmichael D. Crutchfield As we approach General Conference and Annual Conferences it is important to me and to us to speak of unity. The fifth Sunday of Easter I used John 13:31-35 and I was struck by the 35th verse, “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.’”

As we close out this conference year and quadrennium it is important that we think about being reconciled to one another; to know truly that we love each other, and we are in love and charity with our brother and sister. So, we pass the peace. The leader says, “the peace of Christ be with you,” and the many say, “also with you.” Tell each other the Peace of Christ be with you and also with you. Grace and Peace. Then everyone will shake hands, kiss and/or hug, showing signs of peace.

When I began to understand ancient liturgical practice some years ago, one of the more beautiful discoveries was “The Passing of the Peace.” I had never heard the term until I was introduced to the practice in a liturgical context.

Like everything else I encounter in the practice of worship I wanted to know what this term really meant and where the practice came from.

First, for those who do not know the term, it is used in many liturgical services after the reading of biblical texts, the sermon and The Lord’s Prayer. It always comes before the Eucharist or communion. The church will be led in prayer as a congregation and several ways of responding and praying are used. Generally, following this the “passing of the peace” occurs. The leader says, “The peace of Christ be with you.” The congregation responds, “And also with you.”

And then the leader urges the people to share the peace with one another.

Second, the “passing of the peace” occurs just before the Eucharist (Lord’s Supper), for an obvious biblical reason. In Paul’s extensive treatment of the Lord’s Supper in 1 Corinthians 11 he makes it clear that we are not to “eat the bread and drink the cup in an unworthy manner” (11:27). We are exhorted to self-examination (11:28) and “discerning the body” (11:29). Earlier Paul told the Corinthian congregation that “divisions” and “factions” in the church should not exist (11:18-19). The en-tire context says, in the clearest possible language, that we should make sure we are at peace with each other before we come to the Table. The “passing of the peace” is a liturgical reminder of this central truth.

It is a time to search your own life and make sure that you are not communing with others in the congregation with whom you have unsettled disagreements that have created “division” and “faction.” Unity is the whole point.

Because I am deeply committed to practicing the unity of the church, this practice has profound significance in my own life. And because of what I now know about “passing the peace” I find the evangelical substitute: “Greet the person next to you and say hello” to be a very weak substitute for this ancient liturgical practice. Even the most non-liturgical church could introduce this practice and it would profoundly help people to grasp the actual point of 1 Corinthians 11 in the process. Liturgical churches need a better understanding of the reason for this ancient practice if it is to have its intended purpose in the lives of their people. Next time you “pass the peace” do it with a heart that is right with God and your brothers and sisters. If your heart is not right with your brother or sister deal with that before you partake of the bread and the wine.

Ministers' Spouses, Widows/Widowers

MARION SCIPIO Vesper Hour

Marion Scipio, the wife of the late Rev. Isaiah Scipio, was more than a Minister’s wife. She was a caring advocate for the Ministers’ wives throughout the CME Connection. She loved to take new Minister’s Wives under her wing and mentor them. Back in Sister Scipio’s day, there were no male spouses. We were a spoke on the Missionary Wheel and our primary functions were: 1) To raise funds for the Widow’s Mite; and 2) To provide religious tracts in the local churches.

Under the Missionaries, the Widows Mite money was paid out every four years to widows across the Connection. Marion Scipio started a new day for Minister Wives. Mrs. Scipio felt that the wives shouldn’t just sit back in a corner smiling and agreeing with everything but should say something.

She knew we had a special calling. We were called as helpmeets to God’s chosen Servants and we needed a support group. We needed to be in fellowship with each other and we needed to be heard.

Sister Scipio became a fervent advocate for Ministers’ Wives throughout the connection, so it was no surprise when she became the first Secretary of the Ministers’ Wives under the Missionaries. If she would have lived beyond 1985, she would have been delighted to know that in 1995, the CME Church commissioned and ordained the Ministers’ Spouses, Widows and Widowers Department and that the Widow’s Mite money is now paid out every year to Widows and Widowers throughout the connection.

In the official by-laws of the National Ministers’ Spouses, Widows and Widowers Department, the Marion Scipio Vesper Hour is listed as the official event to raise monies for the Widow’s Mite Fund.

GRANTS PRESERVE HISTORY Written by Sue Watson Staff Reporter at the South Reporter

July 29 was an auspicious occasion for Rust College. Friends of the college and some of the graduates of Mississippi Industrial College gathered on the lawn of MI to celebrate the award of $1.5 million to go toward the restoration of Booker T. Washington Hall.

U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker remarked about the history of the college and the importance of preserving Washington Hall and Carnegie Hall. It is anticipated that it will take $10 million to complete restoration of Washington Hall and $14 million to restore Carnegie.

Dr. Ivy Taylor, president of Rust since 2020, is receiving accolades for her vision for Rust College and the preservation of historic structures on the MI College campus. When she arrived in Holly Springs, Taylor said her breath was taken away at the history, architecture and grandeur and potential to recapture the history of MI. Carnegie Hall will be used as a place for the arts, performances, tours, small conferences and academic activities. Upon renovation, Washington Hall will be renamed the Ida B. Wells Interpretive Center.

Rust purchased the MI campus in 2008 and dedicated itself to preserving the history of the institution and to equip and inspire communities throughout the world, Taylor said.

Rev. Zack Beasley, on the board of trustees, added buoyancy by asking each person to turn to a neighbor and say, “You are a beautiful person. And you are telling the truth. We live in a wonderful world. The sky is still blue, rivers still run, and grass still turns green.”

Dr. Jesse Edwards, with the MI College Alumni Association, covered some of the history of MI. From Tate County, son of a cotton farmer, he described the atmosphere at MI and Rust when he studied there. At the time both colleges were in operation. Some highlights of his presentation included his eating grits in the cafeteria below Carnegie Hall and studying in the 2,000-seat auditorium, one of the largest of its kind among black institutions of the day.

He compared Bishop Elias Cottrell, who founded four colleges and was born in Marshall County in 1853 as a slave, to the greats like Isaac Lane, Booker T. Washington, and Frederick Douglass. Lane, fourth bishop of the [...] CME Church, born a slave March 4, 1834, in Madison County Tenn., founded Lane College. He taught himself to read and write. “I was nurtured here. I learned how to learn here. I was saved here. I was exposed to black history here,” Edwards said. “I hold four college degrees ... I left in 1975, motivated and inspired,” he said.

Architect Belinda Stewart spoke of the importance of preserving the buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. “Amazing things happened here,” she said. “I am looking for stories that can be used in furthering of this work and the motivation of young people. How transformative it will be. We just can’t wait to see where it goes from here.”

Holly Springs Mayor Sharon Gipson said MI is personally historical to her, a place where she sold Girl Scout cookies and learned leadership skills. “I remember the vibrant days of MI College,” she said.

Charles Terry, a member of the Marshall County Board of supervisors noted the progress in the area recently. “Marshall County is not a good place to be from, it’s a good place to be in,” he said. “You can’t do it alone, it takes local, state and federal (dollars).”

State representative John Faulkner noted the untold number of times he has driven by the MI campus. He applauded Taylor for undertaking the project. “She and her team are up for the challenge. Pride will be reborn as the result of this project,” he said.

Wicker, who hails from Pontotoc, praised Rust College for the bright future Taylor brings to the institutions. He recognized Belinda Stewart as choice for architect for the projects. Wicker said as a child he passed through Holly Springs at night on his way back and from visits with his grandmother in Memphis, Tennessee.

“Belinda, if you want to know a little more history, I made a speech in 1975 in this very building,” the senator said. He was campaigning for Kay Towery of Oxford for state senator. “That I was here and got to make a speech here. I long, Dr. Ivy Taylor and U.S. Senator Roger Wicker stand in front of Carnegie long thought what a tragedy it would be to lose Hall with other dignitaries and board members Friday. these buildings,” Wicker said. Wicker referred to Hebrews 12: 1-2, “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.”

Cecelia W. Sawyer, chair of the board of trustees, closed the presentations referring to “my beloved Alma Mater, Rust College,” which she said is in rebirth and renaissance. Rust and MI colleges changed the lives of people for decades, she said. “The institutions are a combination of community and place, the same audacious dream put Holly Springs on the map of mighty excellence in education,” Sawyer said.

"When a flashlight grows dim or quits working, you don't throw it away. You change the batteries. When a person messes up and finds themselves in a dark place, do you cast them aside? Of course not. You help them change their batteries! Some need AA ... attention and affection. Some need AAA ... attention, affection, and acceptance. Some need C ... compassion. Some need D ... direction. And if they still don't seem to shine ... simply sit with them quietly and share your light."

POST OAK, LONGVIEW, CELEBRATES 144TH ANNIVERSARY Submitted by Ruby J. Portley 2022 Church Anniversary Chairperson

Sunday, July 10, 2022, was a great day in the life and many witnesses of Post Oak Christian Methodist Episcopal Church as they celebrated another "gift from God," the 144th Anniversary and Annual Homecoming Service. The theme for this historic occasion was, "Holding Steadfastly to the Hope We Proclaim."

The guest speaker for this service was Rev. Henry Q. Dickerson, Tyler District Presiding Elder. Rev. Dickerson spoke from Psalm 48: 12-14 and Matthew 16: 13-18, and chose the subject: "The Church's One Foundation." It was noted that foundations must be solid like a rock, and this "rock" (Post Oak) was founded by Jesus, who is the rock of our church. It was asked, "Why has Post Oak lasted 144 years?" (1 Cor. 3:11) It is because [there is] no other foundation but Jesus Christ. On Christ the solid rock we stand; any other foundation is sinking sand. The Lord has been our strength, provider, and protection over these 144 years that we celebrate on today. The Lord has been our refuge and strength, a very present help in times of trouble. We have been filled afresh with the Holy Spirit as we continue to walk where the Lord has led us.

It's been one hundred and forty-four years, and God has continued to bless this Church to continue to function and move forward in a fast-paced world. Pastor John Griffin, who is serving three years as pastor of Post Oak, and the congregation were full of praise and thanksgiving due to the many blessings that have come along in the 144 years of hard labor, sweat and tears. For it is good to reflect on the past history and contributions of a Church with a great history and legacy. This Church was founded in 1878 by three dedicated and determined men of God who had a vision for a better day and a place to praise the Lord. It is with deep gratitude and appreciation that on this special day we pause to say thanks to our Heavenly Father for His love, grace and mercy. All praise and glory we give to Him for past and present achievements. Many of our great forefathers made great sacrifices because of the Church, its obligations and what it stood for, and for that we are grateful. We have a church family that is living the Christian legacy, because it is evident that one generation shall always give praise for thy works to another, and all shall declare thy mighty works together.

Due to Covid-19 many highlights of this special service were virtual. Sis. Carol Pruitt, a fifth-generation grandchild of founder Jeff Portley, served as worship leader. Fem Boyd Christian, a fifthgeneration descendant of founder Daniel Bradford.

The Church Anniversary Committee members, who have served since the 1970's, were in full awe and full of praise from reminiscing on all the blessings that this Church continues to have, which lets us know that the solid rock from which this Church was built is steady, strong, and holding its foundation throughout the storms and pandemics 24

On August 28, 2022, the members of Trinity CME Church, led by the Youth and Young Adults Ministry, held a special service to welcome Elder Maggie C. Banks back for her 10th year as their Pastor.

The theme for this special occasion was taken from 1 Peter 5:2-4, “Feed the flock of God which is among you.” Elder Maggie C. Banks has continually demonstrated a shepherd’s heart through her preaching, teaching, humility, and strength.

Elder Banks was born into a Baptist family in Jackson, Mississippi, but at six years of age, with her parents’ permission, she began attending a CME Church in her neighborhood. She said the CME Church preached the “pure Gospel” and adhered to detailed order.

Elder Maggie C. Banks was ordained Traveling Deacon at the 115th Session of the South Louisiana Region Annual Conference at Trinity CME Church in 2009. In 2012, at the 117th Session of the South Louisiana Region Annual Conference, she was received into Full Connection at Trinity CME Church.

In 2013, Bishop Thomas L. Brown, Sr. appointed Elder Banks as the first woman pastor in the 141-year history of Trinity CME Church. And On June 5, 2019, Bishop C. James King, Jr. appointed her presiding elder of the CME Church's New Orleans District in Louisiana.

The Youth and Young Adults kicked off the celebration with songs of praise and joy. They reminded us that “God’s got the whole world in His hands,” and nothing is impossible for a God who holds the world in His hands.

Exhorter Mittie J. Edmond welcomed Elder Banks back to Trinity CME Church with a plaque that acknowledged the souls she has touched in her 10 years as our Elder and Pastor. A bouquet of flowers was also presented to Elder Banks in honor of her return to Trinity CME Church.

Young adult Cecil E. Wiltz II shared a special reading he wrote to honor Pastor Banks. The reading is included.

The new Quadrennial Theme calls the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church to “BE BOLD, FACE NOW, EMBRACE NEXT, AND SEE NEW.” In his poem, young adult Cecil E. Wiltz II identifies Elder Maggie C. Banks as “Bold.” “A boldness to go where God has told her to go.” In order to spread God’s word, we all need the gift of boldness. Acts 4:31 says, “After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.”

The members of Trinity CME Church welcomed Elder Maggie C. Banks back for another year of her leadership, her faithfulness, and her heart. As our leader, she is a mirror image of God, a reflection of His joy, peace, and love.

By this time, we have read several articles explaining the purpose and goals of the CME Church Strategic Plan.

Local congregations have begun implementing strategies to meet these goals, while others may remain stagnant seeking clarity on where to begin. As I approach the Strategic Plan and its guide for improvement in our denomination, a few of my responsibilities as a Presiding Elder entail interpretation and empowerment. My goal is to analyze the plan and equip the clergy and laity in my district with tools to implement the plan. Some who are linear thinkers will process information sequentially, preferring a systematic approach with a clear starting and ending point. On the other hand, there will be non-linear thinkers who will approach challenges from an abstract perspective whose approach is to connect concepts and ideas utilizing multiple sources.

Whether linear or non-linear thinkers, analyzing and implementing the CME Strategic Plan will require prayer, patience and new perspectives.

This article will provide suggested strategies to engage strategic goal number six of the Strategic Plan and introduce the “Start-Stop-Continue” approach to gain insightful feedback as we move forward in ministry.

Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed (Proverbs 16:1-3) Everything we do in ministry must begin with God as our focus. Gather persons in the church who have a passion to fulfill the call of God and expand the ministry of Christ. Your assessment team should include a diverse group of individuals to gain the best possible insight. As your team joins in prayer and trusts God’s direction, consider completing a SWOT analysis where you identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats within the church and in your community.

By taking the time to explore both the internal and external environments of your ministries, you can develop effective long-term strategies for the direction

God is leading your church. Operating with strategic intentionality, and becoming more efficient with your time, energy, and resources will allow your church to remain effective and relevant in dynamic and spiritually diverse communities.

Strengths and weaknesses are internal to your church, things that you have some control over and can change.

Opportunities and threats are external to your church, things that are going on outside your church, in the larger community. Opportunities are advantages and possibilities for new ministries. Consider how you will protect the church from external threats.

Each of us should use whatever gift we have received to serve others as faithful stewards of God’s grace. (1 Peter 4:10) Here a few questions to guide the process of ministry development: a)

What are the needs of individuals in your church and community?

What ministries are in place to address these needs?

What steps should you take that you are not currently taking to meet the needs?

What ideas do you have about meeting these needs?

Once you have answered these questions, the next suggested step is to ask the team completing the SWOT analysis to look at what you can start doing, stop doing, and continue doing. The CME Church Congregational Ministry Manual has included a worksheet on page 20 as a guide to prioritize your community’s needs and program planning. After you complete your SWOT analysis and regroup for feedback, the worksheet will serve as a resource in guiding your next steps.

Hines Memorial Conducts One-Day Vacation Bible School Submitted by Sis. Shirley Vaughn Member, Board of Christian Education and Formation

The Board of Christian Education and Formation of Hines Memorial CME Church planned and executed a successful one day VBS on September 27, 2022, in the Family Life Center. The theme: “I’ve got this with Jesus,” and the primary scripture Philippians 4:13 NLT, “For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength,” was evident throughout the day as the 14 children, 8 youth, and 21 adults enthusiastically participated in Bible study, arts and craft, and music.

The presence of visitors and former members added to the day, leaving everyone wanting another day of fellowship and fun. The Hines Memorial village is small but committed to being proactive in reclaiming our young people and former members, and welcoming visitors as we strive to be a light in the community. COVID guidelines were followed as we have not completely returned to our new normal.

The 10 am – 1 pm event ended with a representative from each class giving a summary of the lesson. A sensational boxed lunch was provided to all participants, and individual certificates were issued as VBS 2022-2023 came to a close. The encouraging remarks from attendees, and their willingness to participate in future activities offers the opportunity for the BCEF to plan on going events for all levels of our membership.

The Rev. Dr. Ore L. Spragin serves as pastor at Hines Memorial in Albany, Georgia. Mrs. Annie Adams is the Director of the BCEF, and Dr. Sheryl Venable serves as Superintendent of Sunday School.

Lessons Learned in Ministry Through Friendship Submitted by Rev. Jessie Manuel

Relationships of all kinds take work. I say something akin to that in almost every article I write. In fact, when it comes to relations I will tell you that you don’t reap the benefits of a good relationship unless you commit to working hard at it. But sometimes, we get stuck in our ways and don’t quite know how to get unstuck. If you are serious, you will try your best to help to make these relationship habits worth fixing if you want to keep your relationship going strong.

Friendship is essential for the successful wellbeing of every person. It is based on the simple rules of trust and honesty. A true friend is a person you can always count on when you face challenges and serious problems. He or she always offers a shoulder to cry on in case something wrong happens. A true friend is never envious of your accomplishments and achievements. This person respects you and keeps all your secrets. You can always tell your trusted friend your flaws and be sure that your revelations are safe. A good friend is always loyal to you and never lets you down. Being trustworthy is a very important factor in my and any friendships, I think. A true friendship is a reward for all the good we do in our life. A true friend is there for you in the times of need; he or she makes you smile when you have forgotten how and lifts you up when you cannot lift yourself.

Ministry is a muddy place sometimes. Rain sometimes comes to us from our direction, and we also don't have anywhere to lay our heads to rest. This is why we need friends to lean on. Friendships are not optional in ministry; they are essential. Friendships are often what God uses not only to keep us in ministry but to keep us in faith.

Over the years many relationships have changed doing my ministry. Foolish friends hinder your faith, morality and ministry. Do an honest assessment of the people in your life. Are they helping you flourish? Do they drain you and encourage you to be a person you don't want to be ?

Friendships built on honesty will, at times, have disagreements. Now, that doesn't mean you should cuss or constantly be fighting. If you are, I encourage you 32

to examine your relationship further to determine why. But sometimes we disagree because we care. Disagreements are natural in an honest friendship [but] honesty hurts at times.

You need people in your life who have permission to wound you. This might be by having people in your life who don't totally agree with you. If all friends think the same way, write the same song, dress same way, eat the same food, live in the same places and have the same hobbies, you don’t need a friend. Ask yourself are you allowing people into your life who can change your status?

As you seek for a friend in the ministry or consider this friendship, does this person have permission to be honest with you? Do you have friends who can point out what you're seeing, give honest feedback on your teaching, and ask you real questions? In honest friendship, words, both encouragement and critique, mean something because you know they come from a caring heart.

You also need friends in the ministry for endurance.

We cannot survive this life of ministry without faithful friends. We cannot survive this life or ministry without faithful friends. Ministry is hard, and if we don't find friends to help us endure, we will not make it on our own.

Do you have a friend you can cry with? Do you have someone who will talk you out of quitting? Do you have a friend who will force you to rest? I hate to tell you, but suffering and adversity will happen and we have to question that. But do you have a friend to help you endure it? You may be thinking, “I have many friends!” You may have many friends and still have no deep, personal relationship.

If you are married, your spouse should be in the instrument category. You must allow them into your inner world to help you endure. If not, they may become bitter because of being emotionally boxed out of your life.

We all have more intimate friends and others. Don't focus on the number but only on whether these people exist in your life and who they are. If you can't think of any, cultivate down. Commit to befriend a person your soul is drawn to and till the soil of friendship.

I just wanted to share some lessons that I've encountered in these twenty-two years of ministry with relationships. I have had great relationships. I've had foolish relationships. I’ve had bad relationships. I’ve had relationships that have pushed me to the to the highest I could go. I will continue to have friends in the ministry.

The only way we can possibly struggle forward in life and ministry is by intentionally seeking out honest, enduring friendships.

There are many things we can learn from the changes we’ve had to make as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The safeguarding of church assets and records may be among the most critical.

Custody of Cash While many churches began online services during the pandemic, and carried out ministry remotely, there are some things that should not be handled remotely or on an individual basis. A church should never allow an individual to have sole responsibility for the financial management for the church; including collecting, counting, recording, depositing funds, or recording electronic donations received by the church. Even if there are only a few members, these responsibilities should not exclusively reside with one person. For volunteers who find themselves isolated in this position, they should insist that at least a second person is assigned to these important tasks. This ensures proper stewardship, accountability, and acts as a safeguard against intentional or unintentional mishandling. These measures not only protect the church, but they protect the volunteer as well.

Additionally, it is important to note that the second person should not be a family member of the first volunteer.

The church cannot afford to become lax on the proper handling and maintaining of cash assets, even in a situation where volunteer efforts are slim.

Custody of the Church Records In my profession, it has been remarkable to witness how many churches allow their financial records to reside at someone’s home. I have needed to assist many churches in recovering their financial records after someone has become disgruntled and refused to give the church the records that were in their personal possession. I also knew of a volunteer who managed all the financial affairs of their church, (including maintaining the church’s records and checkbook) at their home. When the volunteer passed unexpectedly, the family refused to give the church the records that this volunteer maintained. The church had to open new accounts and start all over again.

Their saving grace was that another church member was a signer on the existing account or they would have lost their money too!

While it may be convenient to operate as much as possible from home, all church records (invoices, bills, bank statements, vouchers, deposits, etc.) should be returned permanently to the church office. Ideally, it would be wise to setup electronic storage and file maintenance, but let’s start with the paper files and move to electronic files after all of these are sufficiently managed, maintained, and organized.

At the 11th assembly of the World Council of Churches meeting August 31–September 8 in Karlsruhe, Germany, Rev. Dr. Angelique Walker-Smith has been elected North American president. As one of six regional and two Orthodox newly-elected presidents, she will serve in this capacity until the next assembly in several years’ time. According to the WCC Constitution, in addition to serving as ex-officio members of the WCC central committee, the role of the WCC presidents is “to promote ecumenism and interpret the work of the WCC, especially in their respective regions.”

Rev. Dr. Walker-Smith brings many years of local, national, and international ecumenical experience to this role. Professionally she serves as the National Senior Associate for Pan African and Orthodox Church Engagement at Bread for the World, a non-profit organization that seeks to bring the collective Christian voice to the work of ending hunger in the US and around the world. For her church, the National Baptist Convention USA, Inc., she is Ecumenical Representative, serving at both the WCC and the National Council of Churches USA, among other ecumenical settings. She is a graduate of Kent State University, Yale University Divinity School, and Princeton Theological Seminary.

“Rev. Dr. Walker-Smith is no stranger to the hard work of ecumenism,” stated Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie, Interim President and General Secretary of the NCC. “With a spirit of enthusiasm and joy, for many years she has offered her talents to the WCC and the NCC, as a member of our respective governing bodies, and as an ecumenical leader in other organizations and initiatives. We are so proud to have Rev. Dr. Walker-Smith represent the US and Canada at the WCC as North American president.”

Rev. Dr. Raymond F. Williams Rev. Dr. Raymond Freddrick Williams was born on September 5, 1941, and was called home to glory on August 25, 2022, at the age of 80. Raymond was born to Rev. John Edward and Minnie Williams in Fort Myers, Florida, the third of four siblings: John, Lorenzo, and Virginia. Throughout his youth, his father pastored several churches in Florida and South Carolina while raising Raymond and his siblings in the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. It was this exposure that fostered Raymond's great love for the church and the beginning of his religious studies.

While growing up, Raymond was always quite studious, and he graduated from Gibbs High School, St. Petersburg, Florida, at the tender age of 16.

He received his call to the ministry while attending Paine College, Augusta, Georgia, and soon immersed himself into the ministry. His journey led him to Saint Augustine, Florida, where he met and married the syrup to his pancakes, the sugar in his tea, Lula Mae Bell, in 1962. He would often remark, "If I don't love Lula Mae, grits ain't grocery, eggs ain't poultry, and Mona Lisa was a man!" Everyone knew this to be the truest thing about him. After a few years, they welcomed their firstborn, Raymona, into their lives.

Soon after came Regenia and finally their youngest, Adrienne. Raymond doted on his daughters from the moment they were born. He was a proud and loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, greatgrandfather, uncle, cousin, nephew and friend who was quick to share his family's accomplishments and 38

funny stories with his congregation and anyone who would listen.

Raymond was highly intelligent and cherished education. He graduated from Cheyney State University, Cheyney, Pennsylvania, with a Bachelor of Education and later earned his Master of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary, Princeton, New Jersey. He was given an honorary Doctorate of Theology by Pacific College of Theology.

He was an educator in Darby Township, Pennsylvania; Flint, Michigan; and Gastonia, North Carolina, for many years teaching English and Special Education.

Rev. Williams lived a life of faithful service to the CME Church, serving as minister to congregations at Dawson Chapel, St. Augustine, FL; Noble Chapel, Birmingham, AL; Beebe Memorial, Washington, DC; Mt. Zion, Sharon Hill, PA; St. James, Flint, MI; Israel Metropolitan, Washington, DC; Broomfield, Gastonia, NC; Amos Temple, Riverside, CA; Brown Memorial.

Louisville, KY; Holsey Temple, Philadelphia, PA; and Mt. Olive, Orlando, FL. He also served as General Secretary of Evangelism, Missions and Social Concerns for 16 years. This position afforded him opportunities to travel to Australia, England, Fiji, Ghana, Haiti, Jamaica, Nigeria, and Singapore spreading the gospel, singing and playing the piano and organ to great acclaim. His love of travel led him to run annual bus trips to Disney World for a number of his students and congregants from Philadelphia, Flint and North Carolina. He also had an open door policy everywhere he lived, always inviting family and friends to visit and fellowship.

The attention he garnered globally led to his writing and publishing several books on missions, evangelism and church growth, as well as plays that he directed using his church members as the very capable and entertaining casts. Raymond’s most notable publication was a cookbook titled, Cooking With the Preacherman, which showcased his famous cake and gumbo recipes. He loved bringing his friends and family together for any occasion and baking five or six cakes and a huge pot of sumptuous seafood gumbo for all to enjoy.

Not only was Raymond an amazing cook and writer, but he was referred to as a “Triple Threat" in the CME Church: a powerful, Holy Spirit-filled minister, a gifted musician, and a renowned recording artist.

He recorded and released two solo albums, “Just As I

Am" and "What’s Your Brand," and was featured on multiple singles on the Christnas compilation album, "Forever Christmas." His moving renditions of “Move Mountain" and “One Day al a Time" woke the spirit up everywhere he preached. He shared his love of gospel music and built the church with the masses by hosting several conferences and workshops on evangelism, gospel music and church growth throughout the United Stales, Europe, Africa, and Asia.

Raymond was preceded in death by his father, Rev. John Edward Williams; mother, Minnie Williams; brothers, John Henry Williams, Lorenzo Williams, and Bubba Williams; sisters, Virginia Elizabeth McCullough and Agnes Williams; nephews, Lorenzo Williams, Jr. and Alton McCullough; and niece, Glorious Williams.

He leaves to cherish his legacy, his wife of 60 years and 6 months, Lula Mae Williams; daughters, Raymona Williams, Regenia Caudle-Davis (Maurice Davis), and Adrienne Smith (Bruce Smith); grandchildren, Damian Williiams (Summer Mills), Keith Caudle (Ibokun Osei-Caudle), Christopher Caudle (Kathleen Arce), Larry Peterson, and Ocean Williams (Shaqwan Vandergrift); great-grandchildren, Damian ”Paco Williams, Caden Williams, Chase Mills, Elijah Barton, Winter Barton, Ellieanna CuevasCaudle, Nala Vandergrift, Emory Arce-Caudle, and Niko Vandergrift; aunt, Mable Story; nephews, Rev. Raymond led a remarkable life with great passion, high spirit, a great sense of humor and a deep love of people. He loved God and adored his wife, daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He lived in service to the CME Church and to the world.

We are all the better for having experienced and loved him, and he will be truly and deeply missed.

Sister Eula V. Polk Sister Eula Viola BrownPolk was born May 24, 1912, in Terry, Mississippi, to the late Richard Brown and Frankie OwensBrown. She was the last surviving child of the nine daughters and one son born to this union.

In 1921, at the age of nine she accepted Christ and united with Little Bethel CME Church in Terry, where she served faithfully in various capacities. At Little Bethel, Sister Polk served as Sunday School teacher, secretary, treasurer, usher, choir member, stewardess and missionary president. She served twenty-five years as a stewardess.

Her service to God extended beyond Little Bethel. At the district level, she served as treasurer, zone leader for eight years, district stewardess and worship leader. From the very beginning as a member of Little Bethel, Sister Polk represented the church as a conference delegate and eventually lost count of the number of years she served as a delegate. Her dedicated service garnered her the title of queen of the Fourth Episcopal District of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. She was humbled, yet honored to wear this crown.

In 1940, she was united in holy matrimony to Eddie Lee Polk and jointly raised two children, Willie James Coleman and Moses Lee Herk, Jr. Together with her husband, their sons were raised in the fear and admonition of the Lord. She has been blessed to be a daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother, great-great grandmother, an aunt, a beloved sister in Christ and a friend.

Her love for family and community was unquestionable and because of her nurturing spirit to everyone, she was affectionately known as "Aunt V." During her latter years, many referred to her as the "mother of her community."

Sister Polk was educated at Terry Grove Church School, Pilgrim Rest Church School and Lanier High School, a notable feat during a time when educational opportunities were more difficult than they are at present. In 1949, she became a member of the Heroines of Jericho Grand Lodge #353 and was a committed member until her fall in December 2019.

Doctorate of Humanities from New Foundation Theological Seminary in Terry. In December 2015, Sister Polk served as one of four 100-plus-year-olds who served as grand marshals for the Terry Annual Christmas Parade.

Sister Polk was honored with yearly birthday celebrations that recognized her love and longevity of life. She has received special commendations from local, state and congressional leaders as well as recognition from her family and friends. Sister Polk was elated that individuals from all walks of life took the time to recognize her. This was due to her being the humble and Spirit-filled woman that she was.

Sister Polk's parents instilled in her the value of hard work, and that strong work ethic became a part of her life. She and her husband once made a living as migrant workers, traveling to various states securing and working a myriad of jobs. Sister Polk and her husband would also employ others so that they could care for their families as well.

Sister Polk was employed for over thirty years with the Sulser family, helping to raise their children and grandchildren. Floyd Sulser, Jr.'s praise of her went beyond her being just an employee, and in his own words stated, "She was the most devoted and loyal friend you could find.'' He also described her as "a loving and thoughtful person who lived life with others on her mind."

A community and civic-minded individual, Sister Polk registered to vote on Lynch Street as soon as the opportunity came and never missed a time voting. She often stated, "People need to realize the importance of not only registering to vote but actually voting." One of the highlights of her life was being able to vote in 2008 for the first African American President, Barack Obama. He would never forget her commitment to the importance of voting and presented her with a special commendation upon her 100th birthday celebration. Yes, she also voted to elect the first African American Vice-President, Kamala Harris.

Sister Polk was blessed to live for 110 years.

When anyone inquired about her life, she would humbly tell them, "My life has had its ups and downs. We are not a perfect people; we are subject to mistakes, but you don't let the bad outweigh the good.

If you are going to make it in this life you will have to let God do the leading and you follow. Life has not been easy, but don't give up. Someone asked me one 40

day, 'don't you ever get tired?'" She responded, "Yeah, but I don't let that stop me, because the race is not given to the swift nor the strong, but to the one who endures until the end."

After a fruitful and well-spent life, Sister Eula Viola Brown-Polk transitioned into God's heavenly care on Tuesday, September 27, 2022.

Sister Polk was predeceased by her parents; her son, Willie James Coleman; sisters, Edna BrownStevens, Katie Brown-Bozeman, Marie (Mariah) Brown-Wade, Anna Bell Brown-Brooke, Juanita Brown-Washington, Richie Lee Brown-Williams, Nona Mae Brown-Bozeman; and brother, Leroy Brown, who passed at the age of four.

Her rich legacy and loving memories will be cherished by her son, Moses Lee (Helen) Herk, Jr.; daughter-in-law, Bessie Eva Coleman; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, neighbors, her CME family, a team of dedicated caregivers, and a devoted and loving niece, Dollie Stevens-Gathings.

ANNOUNCING BOLD MONEY MATTERS! A FINANCIAL LITERACY AND EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM FOR CME CLERGY!

PRESS RELEASE We are overjoyed to announce the CME Church is the recipient of a 4-year ($1 million) grant from the Lilly Endowment Foundation. The grant will fund a program to provide a financial literacy educational series to CME Clergy, as well as support a fund to provide direct aid to program participants. In keeping with the quadrennial theme, we are tagging this program as “BOLD Money Matters”!

The program officially began September 1st with a targeted launch of the actual educational series in early 2023. During the first months of our start up, we will launch our website, finalize our timeline and put other details in place. The anticipated dates for the Spring 2023 session are Tuesdays between February 7th and March 28th at 8 pm Eastern. The series are free for CME Clergy, but registration will be required. Registration will be open in late fall 2022.

The program has multiple phases: 1. In early 2023, we will begin the 8-session class series. These sessions will be taught live via an online platform. We will offer the 8- session series two times per year for the duration of the grant period.

2. In 2023, we will launch the "Ministerial Excellence Fund" to provide emergency assistance for certain debts or unexpected expenses and will not have to be paid back.

Applicants for funds must complete the class series prior to applying as well as meet other eligibility criteria. The criteria and an online application will be posted on the website after the first series of classes begin.

3. By mid-2024, we plan to add a self-guided online teaching module with advanced courses in finances, financial literacy, financial planning.

4. In 2025-2026, we will add a final dimension to the program, which would be education and consultation for local church leaders and their pastor on topics like "creating a budget", "planning a capital/building fund campaign", "levering property assets".
