The Continuing Ministry of BMBC

On Saturday, August 14, 2021, the Governing Council of the Breeding-Montgomery Bible College (BMBC) met in Ifuho Ikot Okpo, Ikot Ekpene L.G.A., Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, as a follow-up to the formation and organizing meeting of the board held on February 19, 2020.

Sixteen of the twenty-five members were present. These included General Officers Victor Taylor (Department of Finance and CFO), Leon Moore (Department of Evangelism and Missions), and Ore Spragin (Editor, The Christian Index), and PresidentDean Paul Brown (Phillips School of Theology). Bishop Godwin T. Umoette, Presiding Prelate of the Tenth Episcopal District and Chairman of the Board, presided.

Among the several items discussed and approved were the following:

1.

The College Chapel was named the

“Bishop Carter Temple.”

2.

Another aspect of the facilities was

named the “Victor Taylor Center for

Learning.”

3.

A third aspect was named the “Elnora

Palmer Hamb Library Center.”

The Acting Dean, Friday Wilson, gave a welcome address in which he stated, “Breeding Montgomery Bible College is an open theological institution in Akwa Ibom State that has trained pastors both of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church and other denomination[s]. The college was mid-wife[d] by Rev. Dr. Gabriel T. Ukott the pioneer Dean/President from 2008 and today the college has grown to become [one] of the best mono-technic institution[s] for the training of pastors and Church leaders.”

The school awards a Certificate in Theology (one-year program) and a Diploma in Theology (twoyear program) and during the pandemic has managed to begin a satellite campus in Rev. Dr. Ore L. Spragin, Jr., Port Harcourt, River State, Editor Nigeria, at the CME Church Umuebullu. The 10 students enrolled at the satellite campus are directly sponsored by Rev. Mercy Ucho, National Director of Evangelism. A pastor’s institute, approved by Bishop Umoette, is held annually, and according to Wilson, the college is also “… in the process of affiliation with Akwa Ibom State University for the award of Bachelor of Art (B.A.) in Religious Studies.”

Acting Dean Wilson says one of the “major problems of the college” is salaries, with lecturers receiving only 7,000 NGN (approximately 17 USD) per month. However, it bodes well for the school that (1) plans are continuing for an interactive student/professor learning exchange between BMBC and Phillips School of Theology (PST), (2) Dean Brown has committed to sharing some of PST’s teaching videos with BreedingMontgomery, and (3) smartboards will be purchased to help facilitate these exchanges.

Present enrollment at Breeding-Montgomery Bible College is 30, with 19 of those students being on scholarship. While only two convocation/graduation exercises have been recorded in the school’s history, one in 2009 and one in 2015, exercises are presently scheduled for Saturday, March 12, 2022.

Bishop Teresa Jefferson-Snorton Elected Chair of the Governing Board of the National Council of Churches At its October 2021 meeting, the Governing Board of the National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA (NCC) elected Bishop Teresa Jefferson-Snorton as its Chair. Bishop Jefferson-Snorton is the presiding bishop of the Fifth Episcopal District of the CME Church (which includes the states of Alabama and Florida). She is also the CME Church’s Ecumenical Officer and Endorsing Agent for Chaplains.

Bishop Jefferson-Snorton, along with three other newly-elected women officers, made history with this election of an all-female leadership for NCC. At this same meeting, the Board also approved the publication of the updated edition of the New Revised Standard Version (NRSVue) Bible, scheduled to be released as an e-book on November 19, 2021, and in print in May 2022.

Bishop Jefferson-Snorton served as Vice President of the NCC Board from 2019-2021. The 38 member denominations of the NCC comprise some 35 million Christians in Protestant, Orthodox, Anglican, evangelical and historic Black denominations and “peace churches.” The NCC annually hosts a Christian Unity Gathering (CUG) featuring worship, preaching, and workshops on current topics. The theme of the 2021 CUG, which was held October 10-11 as a virtual event, was “In New Wineskins, From Pandemic to Possibilities to Promises.” The NCC also has a central focus on the A.C.T. Now to End Racism campaign. (For more information, visit www.nationalcouncilofchurches.us) As the newly elected Chair, Bishop Jefferson-Snorton stated, “At this pivotal time in the life of the church in the United States, it is noteworthy that the NCC is modeling inclusiveness in selecting its leaders. The denominations that make up the NCC demonstrate a commitment to embody the diversity of God’s creation in so many ways. This commitment is a call for all of us to show the love of God to all, promote unity in Christ Jesus and to resist the current cultural trends of divisiveness.”

A native of Kentucky, a life-long CME, and a former pastor, Bishop Jefferson-Snorton has served on the teaching faculties of Virginia Union University, Virgina Commonwealth University, Candler School of Theology at Emory University, as well as Executive Director of the Emory Center for Pastoral Services and Executive Director of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education. She is currently a mentor in the Doctor of Ministry program at Payne Theological Seminary, Chair of the Board of Trustees at Miles College, and Chair of the Board of Trustees at the Interdenominational Theological Center. She and her husband, Rev. Dr. Lawrence Jefferson-Snorton, who is a CME Presiding Elder, have a blended family that includes eight adult children and three grandchildren.

A worship celebration of Bishop Jefferson-Snorton’s election is tentatively being planned for May 2022 in Montgomery, Alabama.

CHRISTIAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH 2022 GENERAL CONFERENCE COMMITTEE ON RESOLUTIONS The Committee on Resolutions is appointed by the College of Bishops in accordance with ¶206 of THE BOOK OF DISCIPLINE, REVISED 2018. The following are pertinent paragraphs from THE BOOK OF DISCIPLINE, REVISED 2018, PAGES 32-33: ¶206. There shall be a Committee on Resolutions appointed by the College of Bishops. Each Bishop shall appoint one member to the Resolutions Committee by September 1 of the year preceding the General Conference. The Presiding Bishop of the District shall publish the name of the committee member throughout the District. ¶206.1. All resolutions, memorials, and other materials contemplated for presentation to the General Conference shall be sent to the appropriate Episcopal District Resolutions Committee member on or before January 31 of the year of the General Conference. ¶206.2. Resolutions mailed, sent or given to the Episcopal District representative shall be examined by him or her to ascertain if they meet the requirements for proposed legislation (cf. ¶1500.7, §4). All resolutions requiring changes in the wording and/or legal meanings of provisions in the Discipline shall state the paragraph, section, page and language to be changed and the language to be substituted. In addition to the requirements referenced, resolutions shall not contain more than three preamble paragraphs. If the resolutions do not meet the requirements, they shall be returned for corrections.

In addition to these paragraphs from The Book of Discipline, Revised 2018, the College of Bishops has agreed upon the following regulations for the sake of uniformity: 1) Resolutions should be submitted in writing. a) Hard copies given to, mailed or emailed to the Episcopal District Representative should be typed in 12-point font, only on one side of the paper. Multiple pages should be stapled together. b) Resolutions submitted via email should be sent as an attachment in Word document format. c) The submitter of the resolution must type his/her name, address, telephone, email and local church information on each page of the resolution. d) Resolutions submitted on behalf of groups and organizations should clearly state this information and include one name as the point of contact.

3) Resolutions shall not contain more than three preamble paragraphs.

DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE & INVESTMENTS (DFI) – ‘ORGANIC GROWTH & INCOME’

The hallmark of this administration’s tenure in office is marked by revenue savings that have been re-purposed and made available to and for the benefit of our local churches. At the general church level such revenue savings are generated in two ways: 1) reduction in the absolute dollar amount of budgetary assessments from the general church level; 2) generating greater benefits from resources already being expended.

First, in absolute dollar terms from 2015 through 2022 the general church budgetary assessments will manifest a total reduction of $5.84MM. Essentially, these former general church assessments were reallocated and made available for use at the local church and regional church levels.

Second, as a means of paying nonbudgeted expenditures net endowment assessments were increased through investment from $5MM January 2015 to $7MM in December 2020. This has allowed a budgetary supplement of $868,000 in interest and dividends to be made available at the connectional level for the five years 2016 – 2020. This means connectional budgetary priorities have largely been met without request of additional general church assessments thereby assuring these resources remain at the local and regional church level. In addition, when disaster struck with the worldwide pandemic in 2020 – the DFI acted quickly to assist local church and CME entities raise more than $5MM through the Payroll Protection Program (PPP) to assure continued payment of their payrolls. The general church received more than $710,000 through the PPP which was used for payroll. Further, the DFI has accumulated more than 3MM in award points.

These points generate tens of thousands of travel savings which is directed by the College of Bishops. Finally, the DFI joined the International Air Transport Association (IATA) which has resulted in more than $65,000 in income at the general church and Episcopal District church levels.

We have recognized the importance of programmatically assisting local church members to become stronger in their personal resources. Consequently, we have introduced educational conversations for our regions and local churches to train and educate our people in church and personal financial literacy. We are actively developing corporate partnerships to substantially fund these efforts.

Our commitment to automation has led to cost savings, speed, and convenience in travel and compensation. This has been manifested in payroll, travel management, reimbursement, and electronic accounting efficiencies and best practices.

“From Where I Sit…”

“Have You Updated Your Profile?”

Recently I ran into a friend who was buying a huge bouquet of roses to apologize to his bride of one year. Turns out he had not updated his profile on social media since he opened his account, which read he was divorced.

It got me to thinking, “Is it time to update your profile in the CME Retirement Plan?” While many of us ensure that other important documents such as drivers licenses, change of address, and wills are updated on a regular basis, we tend to forget about updating our status or profile for our retirement accounts. And for sure, it’s easy to overlook or forget.

After all, you opened the account ages ago and may have had no need to look at the paperwork since.

But indeed, to ensure that your wishes are followed and to save your survivors the trauma, financial burden, and the uneasiness of legal battles, you should periodically check and review your account and keep the beneficiaries/recipients current.

Our Plan, like most retirement accounts, allows you to name a primary beneficiary who inherits your retirement assets first. If they should meet their demise before or with you, your account would instead go to any secondary beneficiary. However, what if you are divorced from that primary beneficiary at the time you pass, and did not replace him/her with your new spouse? Or what if you have had additions to your family since the time you opened your retirement account? Well, to begin you should be aware that beneficiary designations generally become active immediately after death and normally override any provisions provided in a will. In the above scenarios it means that the funds in your account would go to your ex-spouse and that your current spouse or those additional children that were not named as the primary beneficiaries would be excluded. In both cases, to challenge or rectify the situation, your family will have to go through probate, which is a legal action that can be costly, time-consuming, extremely messy, and more times than not, would be unsuccessful.

So, it’s a good idea to review your beneficiaries every year, especially after any major life changing episodes such as marriage, divorce, the birth of a child, or death of someone in your immediate family.

Making changes and updating your profile and beneficiary designations is simple and easy with our Retirement Plan. You need only call the General Board of Personnel Services at 901-345-4100 and request a change form. We will send it to you by mail or email and you can return it to our office at P.O. This simple, quick, and annual review is far easier and less expensive than a bouquet of roses as an apology. Or at least that’s the way I see it…

Getting Back to Basics as “We Envision Our Way Forward Taking Care of God’s Business” Who Are We Becoming?

Several pastors in The Christian Methodist Episcopal Church who attended Seminary at the ITC are familiar with this bird which represents the process of looking back to see how to move forward. It is a part of the Interdenominational Theological Seminary message. The “Sankofa” bird is a metaphorical symbol of a bird with its head turned backward taking an egg from its back. It expresses the importance of reaching back to knowledge gained in the past and bringing it into the present to make positive progress.

The CME Church has an illustrious past considering the challenges and opportunities it has faced, challenges and opportunities that helped to shape The Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. In the words of Bishop Randall Albert Carter, “this tender plant of God had taken root and was here to live or die.” Those words immortalized the importance of the church’s future.

However, looking back must not cause us to remain in a state of nostalgia over the CME Church. The Sankofa bird, although mythical, offers us the opportunity to reach back to move forward with positive progress. We must envision vibrant congregations with domestic missions, international missions, and discipleship formation. Auto pioneer Henry Ford, who developed the assembly line and the Ford Model T (which was the faster car - back in the 1930’s with a top speed of 45 mph and cost of $850 dollars) was innovative and creative. His developments met the need and changed the world. However, imagine out-fitting the same car with present day innovations. Some would say that would decrease the value and originality, but how relevant and powerful it would be!

Who are we becoming? Bishop Randall Carter also implied in [the statement I quoted earlier] that all living things grow, suggesting that the church is a tender plant, meaning it grows. The root grows down and then upward which suggests that we do not grow in the past; we grow with future expectations. The Sankofa bird does not fly backward, it reaches backward, while moving forward. The post-pandemic congregation looks back over the last two years and moves forward. The mission of the Church is the reign of God. The question is not singular in thought but plural: What does the future of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church look like?

Dr. Leo Pinkett, General Secretary of Ministry to Men of the Cristian Methodist Episcopal Church, says, “Keep Moving Forward Always!” Yes! this we must do, but we cannot replicate the past to become a Matthew 28:19-20 Post-Pandemic Church. Leaders lead, and each leader must work towards the goal while sharing techniques, information and processes that have moved their congregations forward. A focus on Intentional Intergenerational Ministry efforts should not be restricted to the intra-structure of any one organization within the local, district, or region level of our Zion. A focus on Intentional Intergenerational Ministry can be the beginning for what should take place across the entire church. For total effectiveness, it (Intentional Intergenerational Ministry) should be embraced by all ministries in which lay persons are involved and/or serving.

Ten possible results of Intentional Intergenerational Ministry efforts within our Zion are: • Empowerment of the various generations within a congregation to purposely communicate and interact in planned and meaningful ways.

• Enhancement of relationships within the congregation between all generations.

•

Stronger role models for children and youth.

• Greater appreciation of older adults.

•

Greater opportunity to pass on traditions of family and faith.

• Use of the wisdom, experience, and knowledge of one generation to assist in meeting the needs of another generation in a changing and challenging world.

• Faith walks or encounters that purposely team youth, children, and adults together.

• Establishment of a collaborative focus and feeling of empowerment for all generations, as the church maximizes its efforts in bringing life to the Great Commission.

• Lay Ministry Councils and other Ministries, actively partnering with the Department of Evangelism and Missions.

Connectional President’s Report 2021 Greetings dear friends, Thank you for every act of kindness and expression of love you have so generously given to me during the past four years as I have served as the president of this great organization. The members of the Fifth Episcopal District, shepherded by Bishop Teresa Jefferson-Snorton and Presiding Elder Lawrence Jefferson-Snorton, have been a source of joy, encouragement, and inspiration.

The executive committee has performed as officers of integrity, excellence, devoted ministry workers, and true sisters in Christ. This group met faithfully during the year to monitor and advance our work. I am so grateful for the opportunity to know them and to count them as friends and family.

In spite of the global pandemic the past year has been a resounding success. We have meet all our financial obligations while also reacting to many needs of our families in emotional, spiritual, and tangible ways. This response reminds us of why this is a ministry of our church, “to address the needs of families of the ministry.” May God receive His Glory!

Our Goals for the Year and our Successes!

1. Send Gifts to our widows and widowers during the Christmas season.

We are pleased to say that we disbursed over $27,000 in gifts to widows and widowers .

2. Award scholarships to college -bound high school seniors in the fall of 2020.

We awarded 10 scholarships in 2020 for a total of $10,000.

3. Increase our visibility in the church through monthly articles in the Christian Index We were published in the Connectional Interests Section of the Christian Index each month 4. Support Our Students in Our Schools, our HBCU’s of the CME Church We aided our students at Texas College and Paine College with $3000.00 in gifts.

5. Continue acts of fellowship and service to members, family, friends and congregations The Excellent report of the Vice President details this work 6. Distribute published updates and guidelines of the official bylaws of the organization Over 750 copies were distributed to region presidents for their members.

7. Maintain our website for information, tools, and communication Our Website remains active, accessible and relevant -www.cme-spouses.org We also were pleased to support the CYAAC as $1000.00 sponsors.

During this year, our first president, Mrs. Patricia Redds slept peacefully into her reward. It was my honor to travel to Sacramento and express our appreciation and share with her family and friends at her life celebration.

As I work toward the end of this portion of my journey, my heart is encouraged by the honor and favor God has given me. Hopefully, I have done good work and the Ministers’ Spouses Widows/Widowers Department has been made better, stronger, and remained true to its purpose.

As I grew up in rural Tennessee, I dreamed of traveling the world. My life with my dearly departed husband, Richard, afforded me the opportunity to see a good bit of it. Though I never dreamed of being a pastor’s wife, it has been a blessing and a joy. These past years as a widow of a minister have shown me God’s special favor, and I have learned to trust Him in ways I never dreamed! Times change, situations change, but God truly does not.

The dreams of that little girl in me looked to a different and grander way of life, but the reality is just as sweet. Now, I dream of filling whatever place I find myself with joy and light. I am so grateful.

"What Does the Lord Require of You? to Act Justly and to Love Mercy and to Walk Humbly With Your God." Micah 6:8

October 1, 2021 To Miles College Alumni and the Miles College Community, I wanted to make sure that I take the time to thank you for the contributions to Miles College. I wanted to challenge all persons: faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of Miles to rise to the occasion and beat our contributions from October 2020!

Our Annual Giving has increased over the last two years because of you and this year three with me being the Director of Alumni Affairs/Annual Fund.

During the month of October 2020, the College was able to raise $51,857.41 from 94 donations which averages $551.67 per gift. Those contributions assisted with: • Four different scholarship funds • The Student Emergency Relief Fund • The Student Government Association I know that we can beat that in total monies raised and total number of gifts. Let's aim for $60,000 for October 2021 and a minimum of 105 gifts.

The motto for the Office of Alumni Affairs has remained the same. We will continue our efforts with: "Strategic Transparency."

In Memory of Eunice “Meliss” Woodard Submitted by Reverend Anita Marie Neal, Pastor

Eunice was born September 4, 1927, into a Christian family. Her grandfather, Forrest Parnell, was a traveling minister in the state of Florida. Her mother, Theresa Chavers, joined Stewart Memorial CME Church in the early 1930s when she matriculated from Palatka, Florida, to St. Petersburg, Florida.

Theresa Chavers introduced Eunice to the Lord at a very young and tender age. With a background like that, it was inevitable that she would have that same kind of spirit and would join Stewart Memorial and have a servant’s heart like her family.

Her favorite song was Blessed Assurance, favorite mantra in prayer was: “Lord bless us in what we stand in need of,” and favorite scripture, Psalms 37: 1-4: Do not fret because of evildoers, Nor be envious of the workers of iniquity. 2 For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb. 3 Trust in the Lord, and do good; Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. 4 Delight yourself also in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.

Eunice married her high school sweetheart in Stewart Memorial CME Church in the early 1950s and from that marriage two daughters were born, Seresa and Beth, the loves of her life! She raised those girls to love the “Lord” and to find in their hearts their ways to serve Christ. Eunice enjoyed life to the utmost, giving of her time and loving kids like she loved her daughters, Seresa and Beth.

She held numerous jobs, including moonlighting with a janitorial service in the evenings and that of a bank vault teller at Florida National Bank, from which she retired. Her most inspiring and rewarding job was as a Social Worker’s Aide for the Pinellas County School System, St. Petersburg, FL; she absolutely loved and adored children!

Sister Woodard was a faithful member of Stewart Isom Memorial CME Church. She served in multiple capacities and was a leader in her own right. This was a legacy passed down from her mother. She was an Usher, a Stewardess, a Missionary, an eager Lay worker and exhibited “Blessed Assurance,” as she sang when assisting with the maintenance care of the church facility.

Seresa, Beth, family and friends were reminded to think on these words of John 14:1-3, “Let not your hearts be troubled. Ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions. If it were not so I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And where I am, there ye may be also.”

“What will be between your dash?” Was the subject on May 19, 2021. It had been 279 days since I was humbled to have been the pastor of Mother Eunice Woodard. I’m honored to have shared words of comfort to her daughters, Seresa and Beth; to the Stewart Isom Memorial CME Church family; and those in attendance to her celebration of life. Ecclesiastes 3:1-4 was also shared.

After many hours of trials, trouble, pain and suffering, Sister Woodard decided it was time for rest and peace. Everyone in attendance at her celebration of life was challenged and reminded to “hold to God’s unchanging Hands.” This “Golden Girl” and her benevolent voice of prayer as she encouraged the concerned and the unconcerned with words of wisdom will surely be missed.

Mrs. Eunice Woodard, faithful member of Stewart Isom Memorial CME Church, St. Petersburg, Florida, take your rest. We loved you, but God loved you best.

Bethel CME Church, Shiloh Renews Faith with 2021 Vision and Renovation Submitted by Charlie Whitehead

The Bethel CME Church in Shiloh, Georgia, under the leadership of Rev. Alveria Williams, embarked upon its 2021 renovation projects in March to address a number of issues related to exterior portions of the sanctuary.

Phase I of the renovation projects is now complete and the results are truly amazing.

Completing Phase I was not without challenges. Our church was in need of exterior painting as a result of several “paint-overs” in the past. Additionally, the church still had its original asphalt roofing system from when it was built in 1972. Like many small rural churches, it was difficult to find contractors and vendors willing to work with small local churches even though we had secured the financial resources to complete the work.

The roof replacement claim submitted to our insurance company was denied twice, even after it had been determined that the roof had been damaged due to previous hail storms. Multiple estimates to complete the exterior painting, repairs, and new roofing system far exceeded our initial budget. Nevertheless, we were not discouraged. Our Faith in God and His provisions kept us moving forward. The pandemic also created some unique challenges … but God …!!! We were NOT deterred.

The Lord blessed us in many ways. Pastor Williams’ leadership and commitment was the key driver for these projects. Having the vision and willingness to make the necessary commitment was vital to our success. She was able to identify and recruit local, dedicated and skilled workmen from multiple local churches who went beyond expectations to complete the projects within our budget.

Additionally, having a good relationship with our local bank played a key role in helping us secure the necessary funds to complete the projects in a timely manner. Lastly, having dedicated and committed Trustees and Stewards was vital to the overall success of these projects.

This the first time that we can recall where our Presiding Elders in the North Columbus/Lagrange District (Dr. Curtis West) and the South Columbus/Cordele District (Rev. Lindsey Napier, Sr.) have worked together to promote unity in the Region. We started the beginning of this conference year declaring we do it “Better Together” in West Georgia.

This is what happens when we pray, believe in God, and work together. To God Be the Glory…!!!

EFFECTIVE MINISTRY DURING THE COVID-19 SEASON: EMBODYING A HOLISTIC LIFESTYLE

John Wesley, the founder of Methodism in England and the United States, approached Christian ministry with a biblical motif that was layered spiritually into the therapeutic processes of human life.

Wesley used physical, mental and social (political, economic and psychological) healing to reach as many people as possible. He used “whatever means” which were biblical, ethical, and theologically expedient in Christian mission. Especially where his critique of American capitalism was concerned, Wesley longed for the Christian Church to spend more ministry time with the poor. In other words, if it was effective, then it was fair game in terms of reaching the people where they needed help the most. The help that I am referring to is found in the CME Church actively reaching people for Christ and helping to heal their hurts no matter what caused them.

This brings me to the title of my presentation: EFFECTIVE MINISTRY DURING THE COVID-19 SEASON: EMBODYING A HOLISTIC LIFESTYLE. The word effective means BEING successful in producing a desired or intended result for the purpose of existential excellence. The word effective also means BEING significant in remaining faithful to the task of doing holistic ministry within the context of the Black Christian Church. In other words, doing effective ministry in the midst of any communal distinctive is a state of BEING in that if the pastor, preacher and minister is committed to doing a significant ministry within the context in which he or she has been appointed, then he or she is automatically successful.

The first way that I have attempted to do effective ministry during the COVID-19 season is

by communicating with the members of the Lane Tabernacle CME Church congregation in a ministerial way. I have completed this particular task by way of phone calls, text messages and email messages. By way of shoring up the important lines of communication between the pastor and the membership, I have also created a bi-monthly mail-out that is sent to the membership every other month. This form of ministry is something similar to Bishop Marvin Frank Thomas Sr.'s Second Episcopal District Newsletter which is designed to keep the episcopal district updated on what is going on with the ministry of the local church and the Connectional church.

Whenever and wherever I see members in person or out in public, I intentionally make it a point to give them face to face ministry. Perplexingly, I am seeing more of the church members out in the community and out in public places than I am in church on Sunday mornings. So, I minister to them wherever I see them. I try to bring the Black religious experience to those members I see in public places. Here the teaching point is that we must ascertain the importance of ministering to people where they are ... in their physical context. Especially during the COVID-19 season. In deciding to have church on Sundays, I changed the worship time on the church sign to read 11am to 12pm, and included notice of temperature checks, wearing of masks, social distancing, etc., which marketed the church's 55-minute morning worship with specific instructions. Even in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, I have attempted to systematically grow a new church by way of gathering new members inside an old church building. As a result, I am seeing more

Submissions non-members and visitors than I do the actual members of the church. On the home front, my greatest challenge during the COVID-19 season has been the lack of giving from those members who do not attend church in-person. I have been inspired to teach the principles of Tithing, Sacrificial Giving and Benevolent Giving.

Because the COVID-19 pandemic has given us an opportunity to do even greater ministry within and beyond the church building, I have been able to embrace The Five Pillars of Effective Leadership: 1.

Effective pastoral (spiritual) leadership in the local church at the Lane Tabernacle CME Church in Hopkinsville, Kentucky.

2.

Effective political leadership in the public square; remaining visible to my neighborhood’s constituents and the community as an elected City Councilman in Ward 1.

3.

Effective academic scholarship in being published locally and nationally, and writing new books with interdisciplinary themes.

4.

Effective organizational leadership in my family’s business, Adams & Sons Mortuary, here in Hopkinsville, which is a ministry service in and of itself.

5.

Effective cultural leadership in my everyday life. My pastoral lifestyle is one of organic intellectualism, teaching, empowerment, cultural creativity while remaining committed to effective preaching and the embodiment of a strong biblical spirituality ... all of which has been done under the theological banner of being a CME preacher. We are all Christians and we are all governed by what we term the Episcopacy – the Executive Branch of the CME Church, or the College of Bishops. However, that M in

CME (Methodist) represents an irreplaceable part of our church's theology.

As a preacher, pastor and theologian, John Wesley's commitment to doing holistic ministry is what ultimately defined his lifestyle. In the ministerial embodiment of the Methodist way, Wesley referred to Christian mission as a form of Church ministry.

The reason why Wesley referred to the world as his parish is because he viewed the world, and all that was in it, as an all-day, everyday opportunity to reach the masses. Wesley was more missiological in his thinking than he was religious. Another word for missiological is theological. To be sure, Wesley understood that if there were no mission work attached to our individual spirituality and embedded into our religious convictions, then our church religion becomes a ritualistic opium of testimonial nothingness and cultural irrelevance.

In the spirit-mind of John Wesley, the embodiment of holistic ministry was, in essence, his lifestyle. It was his calling, his purpose, his mission, and his ministry both within the church building on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings and beyond the church building, wayward and deeper into the communities and neighborhoods in which he sought to serve.

Most of the leadership outreaches that I just described in this presentation were birthed in the prayerful meditations that took place in the Pastor's Study. Theologically speaking, effective holistic ministry is the metaphysical result of time spent in the Pastor's Study. The COVID-19 pandemic has given us an opportunity to do an even greater ministry within and beyond the church. Holistic ministry is effective ministry.

Nakimberly Zalika McGee

The Lord is my strength and my defense; He has become my salvation.

Nakimberly Zalika McGee is the oldest child of Joni Davis McGee and William Drew McGee. She has one brother, William Nakavian Louis McGee, lives in Booneville, Missisippi (MS), and is a 2021 graduate of Thrasher High School. She was on the Principal's List and a member of the National Technical Honor Society at Prentiss County Vocational Technical School. She was also a member of the girls' basketball team for four years.

Even at such a young age, Nakimberly is a young woman who has a lot to be thankful for. At the end of her 2nd grade year, she was diagnosed with a Stage 3 Wilms Tumor. She was treated at St. Jude in Memphis, Tennessee, where they removed one kidney and a tumor on her abdomen. She could not attend school for a semester. Her "nana" had retired, so she home schooled her for that semester. She was given 7 radiation treatments and 20 chemotherapy treatments. On December 15, 2011, she was declared cancer free, though she still continued to be monitored by the doctors at St. Jude for several years.

Nakimberly knows that it was God directing the doctors and nurses who treated her. She is thankful for the many families and friends who prayed for her, called, texted, visited, and gave her gifts and donations.

Nakimberly asks for continued prayers that she remains healthy.

She is an active member of Oak Grove CME Church in Rienzi, MS. She has served on the Youth Choir and as a Junior Usher.

Currently, she is enrolled at Northeast Mississippi Community College in Booneville, Mississippi, pursuing an Associate Degree in Early Childhood.

Zariah Patterson

The Lord is on my side I will not fear

Born and raised in Corinth, Mississippi, Zariah Patterson is a 2021 graduate of Corinth High School and is currently enrolled at Blue Mountain College where she will be majoring in Optometry and minoring in Business. The recipient of an athletic scholarship will also be doing powerlifting. Zariah is a very optimistic and driven individual as well as a proud member of Oak Grove CME Church (Rienzi). Over the years she has been a member of the Youth Choir as well as a member of the Usher Board.

Zariah has been participating in sports since she was a toddler and has kept this strong drive throughout her life. Her love for softball has existed since her first year of park ball at the age of 5 at the City Park. Since then, she has picked up other extra-curricular activities such as Band, playing the flute since 6th grade; powderpuff and track since 9th grade; Color Guard and Powerlifting since 10th grade; and has been an outstanding multi-sport athlete while still maintaining a substantial social as well as academic status. Zariah has received awards such as Student of the Month, top three in her History class in her 11th grade year, a white cord for her academic achievements in English for her Cambridge courses, and earned a membership in the Mississippi Scholars finishing out her high school years.

Zariah has also had a successful athletic career in her years of high school. During her 7th grade year, her softball team became Division Champions in Slow Pitch. During her 10th grade year, her Color Guard group received an award for being top of their class and an outstanding performance award, which in Band terms would be considered having "all 1s," and she was an all 1-4A Division State Champion in her first year of Powerlifting, becoming the first female in Corinth history to win State in Powerlifting. She went on to dominate her weight class of the 165s all the way through her senior year. She won 1st place throughout the year, receiving another 1-4A Division State Title. In 10th grade, she began her track accomplishments with receiving 3rd place in Girls’ Discus at State. Later, in her senior year, she accomplished her goal of becoming the 1-4A Division Champion in Girls’ Discus, was the 3rd place recipient in Girls Shotput, and participated in the Softball All-Star Game her senior year, finishing out the year with a bang.

Zariah’s years at Corinth High School have been lived to the fullest when it comes to what she has accomplished and in what all she will achieve as she goes into the next level of collegiate Powerlifting. There is no doubt that she is a multi-talented individual. Zariah has been blessed and has been a blessing to others by being generous and liberal to those around her. She has also been a member of the Girl Scouts since her youth.

She helps within her immediate community as well as in other, wider-community service projects, putting in a hefty amount of time not just with her social life but with her community work. Some of her projects included softball tournaments, community cleaning, helping with the Light House Toy Drives, working in the concession stands for games, hosting band competitions, and performing at nursing homes with the Band during Christmas time.

She would like to thank her mom, Tammy Leatherwood; her dad, Gene Patterson Jr.; her brother, Zachary Patterson; her supportive Oak Grove CME Church in Rienzi MS, for spiritually providing for her; and the Corinth community for helping her grow into the person she is today. Her grandparents are Helen Leatherwood & the late Jessie Leatherwood; and Gene, Sr. & Theresa Patterson. Zariah also thanks everyone who has been a positive influence along the way.

Rambling Thoughts "In the midst of the recent weather related challenges that have occurred in various parts of the world, it seems fitting the words of Psalms 19:1-6 are before us. In verse one we hear these words, ''The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the works of his hands." These words call to us to recognize God as creator of all things. Through this aspect of creation, God reveals God's self as creator. We know this but as I was reminded by a friend of mine's Facebook post yesterday [September 11, 2021?], none of creation is for itself. For example, ''rivers don't drink their water, trees don't eat their fruit''. [God's] creation is for us to be blessed by and to take care of. May we hear in the declaration from the heavens a declaration to up our game as stewards of God's creation. May we hear the voice of God calling to do so, now."

Are You Ready to Shift?

The Youth of the Carolina Region of the 7th Episcopal District (North Carolina (NC) and South Carolina (SC)) are ready to transform to the “new normal” ... whatever that will be. For the past two years, our Annual Conference Board of Christian Education and Formation (BOCEF) program has been virtual, and we have been creative in deciding what type of program to have. This year did not disappoint as the Children and Youth presented our second Virtual BOCEF Program Video. Working under the direction of our BOCEF Director/ Producer, Dr. Debra Lowe, and Technical Director Rev. Courtney Adams, the youth tackled the pandemic and showcased our talents. We decided on the theme Are You Ready to SHIFT? Cameron Gethers (St. Paul CME Church, Walterboro, SC) provided the opening prayer. Karmen Alston (Chalk Level CME Church in FuquayVarina, NC) provided the Scriptures and corresponding words as an acronym for SHIFT (Spirituality; Hanging Up Old Perceptions; Involvement; Flexibility; Tenacity).

All districts were represented in the video. Damarion King, Carolina Region Youth President and member of Young Missionary Temple CME Church, did an outstanding job as Worship Leader. He also provided Scripture and an acronym for SHIFT: Switching, Hoping, Innovating, Focused, Transparent. Damarion reminded us to switch out the negative with the positive because the tongue has the power of life & death. Morgan and Skylar Knox did their rendition of The Hill We Climb by Amanda Gorman. Several Youth told us what it takes to SHIFT your mindset and focus on new beginnings. Those youth were Phenix Pace, Young Missionary Temple CME Church, Garner, NC; Jaiden and Justin Farmer, Jr., Sidney Park CME Church, Columbia, SC; and Layina Glenn, Mt. Moses CME Church, Saluda, SC. Kyla Webb (yours truly) told everyone to repent, recommit, and recalculate to rediscover God’s plan for our lives.

We wanted to get the message across that no matter how bad things look or have been, there are still good things happening and a reason for hope. This was reflected through our dance ministry. The IMC Dancers from Israel Metropolitan CME Church in Greenville, SC danced and told us to Smile even when we are down; Jordyn Wright of TruVine Shouse CME Church in Winston-Salem, NC reminded us through her creative dance that God is SHIFTing the Atmosphere; and Kaliyah Boone took us to church with Change Me. We thank Dr. Lowe and the BOCEF department for working with and supporting us each year!

Navigating racism in the 21st century means Eastertide 2021 holds an even deeper significance for me. Termed “Jim Crow 2.O,” I have always known God grieves when we are marginalized, ridiculed, and murdered at the hearts and hands of those who live out Satan’s decree to kill, steal, and destroy. God Incarnate, in the person of Jesus, gives us hope.

Although it is difficult to stomach, racism has gotten better for us as a people. However, better is not good enough. We deserve to be valued and respected for who we are. We are good enough and lacking nothing in our personhood. Racism is evil personified to destroy us (John 10).

I heard only a few minutes of the trial for the police officer who murdered the late Mr. George Floyd. I became so angry! When I was a little girl, I recall traveling to Mississippi with my parents. It was a somber trip. I learned someone was lynched.

When I saw, again, the picture flash on the television with the officer’s knee on Mr. Floyd’s neck, I wanted to scream! Yet I know those who kill us could care not less about my cries.

As I cried out, this time was different. I know that by Jesus’ strips I and we are healed. This time, God opened my eyes with deeper meaning and purpose. My insight brings me no joy or excitement, only the assurance that the person killed was held in the heart of a loving God.

God knew people of African descent, and others, would suffer at the hands of evil. Every time Jesus was beaten, spit upon, ridiculed, stripped naked, and ultimately killed, God was bearing the unbearable for us.

If I had another message to black men and women, it would be that God has not forgotten us. God could have opted a means to bear the unbearable another way but God chose Calvary. God gives us free will and we have a human responsibility to be good stewards of our life. Maybe that’s where justice comes in. We judge each other but Calvary welcomes our brokenness. He bore our iniquities, grief, and sorrows. Yet, the fact remains that life has been cut off.

I remember feeling so broken that I became bitter. I was faithful but someone hurt me beyond what I could bear. I felt hopeless but I also trusted God. That night and several months after, I prayed a psalm. The same psalm might help others as they live with injustice. As people of God, we must trust God; and within our integrity, we must seek change. We are God’s righteousness and our prayers avail much.

Vengeance indeed belongs to God. I get it. Sometimes the pain makes us react in unhealthy ways. God wants us to ask for God’s help. I leave you with the 137th Psalm.

COVID-19 has impacted our approaches to worship and ministry in our local churches. Also, her tentacles have penetrated and changed the conduct of the General Conference (GC). Consequently, the oldest Black Denomination in the world is preparing to hold a Hybrid Virtual General Conference in real-time on the continents of North America and Africa in Cape Town South Africa, in less than 30 days. The AME Church is again at the doorstep of making progressive history.

Delegates are preparing to stake stock of the Church's achievements, re-evaluate strategy, and elect the highest echelon of leadership of the AME Church. The main purpose is to develop the legacy of our forefathers and ensure the sustainability of this Zion for the benefit of generations to come. Undoubtedly, this Great Zion is on the right track.

To guarantee the integrity of this momentous occasion, delegate participation and candidates for elected office must prevail. Two established seats of the GC2021 enjoy equal access to the proceedings: the functionality of delegates' committee duties and equal legitimacy of delegates exercise their voting right.

Neither of the two GC sites or seats is more important or relevant than the other. Also, cognizance must be had that delegates in Africa are at great risk as the numbers rise in South Africa, the vaccine roll-out will not reach all delegates in a timely manner; and in some of the countries where other delegates reside, vaccines are not available.

The value and validity of a candidate must not be impacted by where that candidate is seated. PreCOVID-19, all candidates would have been seated at one site. Though provisions have been made to accommodate candidates from outside North America to be seated at the Orlando, Florida site, no candidate should be perceived as less passionate, qualified, or unserious about their election because they cannot travel to Orlando.

Four candidates live and serve in Africa and have been certified by the CIO Office to campaign for election to serve our church. They are Advocate Thabile Ngubeni (MBA), lay a candidate for the Judicial Council from the 19th District; Presiding Elder Willem Burger, a candidate for bishop from the 15th District, South Africa; the Rev. Dr. Katurah York Cooper, a candidate for bishop from the 14th District, West Africa;

Ecumenical News and the Rev. Dimpho Gaobepe, a candidate for bishop from 19th District, South Africa. These candidates will be seated with their Episcopal district delegations in Cape Town. The remaining candidates will be seated in Orlando, along with the majority of the voting delegation.

The church, through various candidate forums, has provided exposure to all candidates and with other virtual means has afforded extensive interaction between the candidates and voting delegation. However, there is a disparity in campaigning opportunities. Candidates in America may have up to 10 campaign team members on-site, whereas this privilege is not available to the African seating. This is due to COVID-19 restrictions but also due to venue decisions taken in a short period. In this regard, the playing fields are in no way level.

We urge the delegates to spend time doing research on all the candidates, especially those that do not live or serve in Districts 1-13. Through prayer and wise introspection, vote for those they believe will serve our Zion well at this critical time in our history.

The candidates from Africa are grateful for the work done by the General Conference Commission, the CIO and CFO offices, and the Council of Bishops in an attempt to ensure that each delegate enjoys the right and privilege to fully participate in GC2021. There is still room for improvement.

We are also excited about the new era that our church is entering. There is no going back. Change is the product of our COVID-19 experience and we must be willing to accept this with a radical thought adjustment.

We call on our brothers and sisters across the Connection to pivot in the direction of change, innovation, equity, inclusivity, transparency, fiscal integrity, progress, and growth. We are praying for safe travel and the protection of everyone as we journey to GC2021 in Orlando and Cape Town, some at more risk than others. God bless the AME Church.

Joining the Great Cloud

Charles Dean Richmond

Charles Dean Richmond was born to the late Ashlie and Minnie Pearl Alexander Richmond on August 10, 1945, in Lake Cormorant, MS. He was the eldest of nine children and was preceded in death by his brothers Ashlie, Jr. and Robert Richmond.

He professed Christ at an early age and joined Bullard Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Lake Cormorant, where he remained until he was called into the ministry under the leadership of Rev. Wesley Massey.

Charles attended Delta Center High School in Walls, MS and graduated in May 1965. In May of 1967 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. During his time in the military, he attended vocational and trade school. He was honorably discharged May 24, 1973, with the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Campaign Medal, Vietnamese Service Medal, Vietnamese Campaign Medal, Marine Corps Marksmanship Qualification Badge-Rifle Sharpshooter and the Purple Heart Medal.

Charles was united in Holy Matrimony to Geneva Wooten on October 21, 1968, in Nesbit, MS. Four children were born: Sena Carol, Cedric Sedaris, Trivonda LaShauyn and Shaineka Chanta. He worked several jobs before he became self-employed ... C & G Lawn & Janitorial Services, retiring in 2009.

Because of his love for music, he was a founding member of the Faithful Stars and the Singing Cavaliers; and a member of the Southern Echos, the Golden Travelers, and other groups and church [ensembles].

He answered his calling and was licensed to preach in 1996. He was admitted on trial in the NorthEast Mississippi Annual Conference in August of 1997.

He attended the Interdenominational Theological Center in Holly Springs, MS, graduating May 2001. He served as Pastor of the following CME Churches: Shady Grove, Mt. Gilead, Issac Chapel, Roberts Chapel, Harris Chapel and Mt. Patient (Olive Branch-Sardis District); and Jordan Chapel (Holly Springs-Oxford District.) He was also Jr. Vice Commandant of the Detachment #1078 US Marine Corps League.

He departed this life on February 3, 2021 at Methodist Hospital-Olive Branch.

He leaves to cherish his memory: his loving and devoted wife, Geneva, of 52 years, 3 months, and 13 days; his children: Sena Johnson (Lonnie) of Memphis, TN; Cedric Richmond (Roslyn) of Olive Branch, MS; Trivonda 44

Reverend Lorans Jones

Reverend Lorans Jones transitioned to eternal rest on Tuesday the 17th of August 2021.

Rev. Jones was born on the 29th of August, 1935, in Hernando, MS. (De Soto County) to Rev. James R. Jones and Jessie B. Sims Jones.

His formal education began at Cane Creek Elementary School in Memphis, TN (Shelby County).

After his family moved to Ohio during the Great Migration, he attended East High School where he graduated. He attended Youngstown State University (YSU) where he majored in Music and Minored in Voice.

While at YSU he was a member of the Dunbar Chorus.

In addition, he sang with the Philharmonic Symphony Chorus under the direction of Conductor Franz Bibo. In 1979, he graduated from Central Bible College earning a bachelor’s degree in theology.

In 1966 he was united in holy matrimony to the former Betty J. Pincham. He was a friend to all that he met and spent much of his time in loving service to his family, church, and community.

Joining the Great Cloud

Rev. Jones became a member of Phillips Chapel CME Church shortly after his family moved to Ohio. While at Phillips Chapel he was a member of the Male Chorus, served as a Sunday school teacher, and worked with the youth. He also served as an associate pastor.

Rev. Jones served as a CME pastor in the Cleveland-Pittsburgh District, during which time he pastored in Pittsburgh, PA; Warren, OH; Fairmount, WV; Steubenville, OH; Cambridge, OH; and Cleveland, OH. He retired from full-time pastoring in 2009.

One of many highlights in his life was when Rev. Mother Elizabeth Powell asked him to serve with her at World Fellowship Interdenominational Church. This was a task that he was honored and humbled to fulfill!

He retired from U.S. Steel, Inc. He was also a self-employed entrepreneur of the Lorans Jones Moving Company for many years.

He was in an archery club. He was a past member of the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance where he previously served as secretary. He also served as a Block Watch Captain of his local Neighborhood Block Watch.

He enjoyed playing the piano and singing. He was an avid reader, especially of the Bible. He would occasionally bless his family with delicious sweet potato pies that he would make during the holidays! Visiting with the sick and shut in was how he spent some of his retirement. He devoted a lot of time in prayer and praying for others. This ministry will be carried on by his family.

He leaves to mourn his passing but to rejoice in his eternal peace: his loving wife who he affectionately referred to as his Queen Betty J. Pincham Jones; his children: Camille, Jessica and Lorans; two nieces (who he raised as if they were his own daughters) Vera Clark and Karen Clark-Bolden; one sister, Elizabeth, and one brotherin-law, H. Howard Pincham, Sr.; three grandchildren: Raya Jones, Lelia Jones and Joziah Jones; special grandchildren: Maurice Clark and Danielle Clark; and a host of other relatives and friends, as well as daughters and sons in the faith.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Rainey Mae Solomon, and Minister Ellen Young, with whom he was raised.

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, all guests were asked to wear masks and observe social distancing at the Celebration of Life Service that was held on the 27th of August, 2021, at New Bethel Baptist Church Youngstown, OH, and officiated by the Reverend Kenneth Simon. The eulogy was given by the Reverend Larry B. McCulloh of World Fellowship Interdenominational Church Youngstown, OH. The committal was performed by Presiding Elder Bruce Gibson. A service of love and dignity was entrusted to the L.E. Black, Phillips, and Holden Funeral Home.

Mrs. Irene Volley-Tabor

Mrs. Irene Volley-Tabor was born in Americus, Georgia on February 2, 1963. She was the daughter of the late Lynwood "Sang" Volley, Sr. and Mrs. Catherine Munns-Volley, who survives. She received her education in the public school system of Sumter County. She later received bachelor's, master's, and specialist degrees in education from Albany State University.

At an early age, Irene knew that she wanted to teach and preach. She became a member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia. She joined the Interdenominational Youth Choir of Americus, Georgia, while in high school. She went on to be a part of the Religious Life Organization at Albany State University and continued evangelizing for many years. In her final days, she became the exhorter at Cray Chapel CME Church in Albany, Georgia.

She taught school throughout Georgia for nearly 30 years. Her final teaching days were spent at Oak Tree School in Albany, Georgia, doing what she loved the most.

She was married to Mr. Eric John Tabor, Sr. for 24 years, and to their union four children were born. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother to her four wonderful children and one loving grandson, "Lil Man," to whom she devoted most of her time.

She is also preceded in death by her grandparents: Mr. Carl (Irene) Munns, Sr., and a sister, Ms. Barbara Ann Volley-Davis.

In addition to her mother, her husband, and her children (Miss Blossom Claudia Tabor, Miss Kate Lucy Tabor, Mr. Eric John Tabor, II, and Miss Jennifer Irene Tabor), she leaves to cherish her memories a goddaughter, Ta'Niya Robinson; a special son, Bre'On DeVontae Robinson, Sr.; one grandchild, Bre'On DeVontae Robinson, Jr.; seven siblings: Mr. Lynwood (Belinda) Volley, Jr., Atlanta, GA; Mr. Larry (Mytrice) Volley and Mrs. Linda (Luther) Johnson, all of Americus, GA; Mrs. Jennifer (Hollie, Jr.) Williams, Valdosta, GA; Mrs. Tanya (David) Tyson, Americus, GA; Mr. Dexter (Faye) Volley, Byron, GA; and Mrs. Diane (Johnny) Willis, Americus, GA; one sisterin-law, Eve Tabor-King, Albany, GA; aunts and uncles: Susie (Johnnie) Wafford, Pastor Carl (Shirley) Munns, Jr., all of Americus, GA; Jimmy (Annie) Munns, Tampa, FL; Willie Lou (Charlie) Josey, Belleglade, FL; special friends, Mrs. Lillian (James) Coleman, Albany, GA; nieces and nephews: Tamika, Michael, Brian, Kareem, Kimberly, LaTrell, Raymond, Rayetta, Quintin, Tyler, David, Jr., Shikerra, Hollie III, Courtney, and Shantavier; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and many friends.
