Editorial

Who Counts?

When I wrote the editorial for the December 2021 issue of The Christian Index, I included the statement, " We have grown from a church of two active bishops over a denominational membership of 67,889 members c.1872 (1873) in roughly two episcopal districts in the continental United States to one of eleven active bishops over more than two million members in eleven episcopal districts, more than twenty countries, and over three continents." On February 11, 2021, I received a phone call from Rev. Keenan Winters, presently of the Fifth Episcopal District, challenging a portion of that statement, namely that we do not have two million members. Where do our numbers come from?

Statistical evidence available in General Conference journals at the time of this writing Rev. Dr. Ore L. Spragin, Jr., shows that in 1982 the total lay and clergy membership was 279,333. At that time, there was no Editor separate work in Jamaica or Haiti, and no statistics were provided for any work in Africa. The report for 2010 showed an increase in membership to 1,201,983. This included counts for Jamaica, Haiti, and what is now the 10th Episcopal District (West Africa). Reports from episcopal leadership for the 2018 General Conference show a total membership of 499,490. This is far short of the 800,000 now being reported in some sectors of the church.

Looking at these figures raised a number of observations and questions. For example, considering that in the 2010 figures we were including communicant members, I wondered when we started counting that category and how a communicant member is defined. I remember a time that I asked Bishop Hoyt that question, whose response was that such a person attends regularly, participates actively, and gives financial support. I also noticed that not every report showed a number for communicant members, and each bishop who did include a statistic seems to have used a different formula to calculate the result. Who or what determines who is included in membership figures? Who is doing the counting? In the numbers that are reported, who is NOT included? What constitutes the difference between the approximately 500,000 members reported in 2018 and the 800,000 reported today? If we can accept today's number as true, perhaps based on inter-conference reports, conversations, or progress, why not the 2,000,000 figure based on the same information? After all, according to Bishop Carter, we have almost a million members and are making tremendous strides in the 11th Episcopal District (eastern and South Africa). Bishop Umoette also reports continued growth in the 10th Episcopal District. When the million in the Eleventh are added to the aggregate remaining, that gives us a total of 1.3 million members. I will grant that this is not 2 million, but neither is it 800,000. Are we under-reporting our membership? If so, to what end?

When we come to the 2022 General Conference we need to see - across episcopal districts - standardized, consistent reporting of membership, including classification of types of membership and inclusion of all persons who fit within these categories. Whatever the truth is, let it be known. All members count.

QCD’s & RMD’s: A Tax-Saving Opportunity!

Recently, I received a call from Mr. Arthur Baker, a friend of many years and former Recording Steward of Lane Metropolitan CME Church in Cleveland Ohio, who inquired if I was aware of QCD’s (Qualified Charitable Distributions) in relation to RMD’s (Required Minimum Deductions). And although I was aware of RMD’s, I was only remotely familiar with the details of the QCD’s and how they could benefit eligible pastors and laity of the CME Church who held tax deferred investments.

Before proceeding, be reminded that this article is NOT TAX ADVICE and tax concerns based on information from this article should be first referred to your TAX ADVISOR OR PREPARER especially regarding “age requirements and limitations”.

RMD’s are mandatory, minimum, yearly withdrawals that, beginning in 2020, generally must be taken starting in the year the tax-deferred investment account holder turns 72. Since tax deferred investments grow without a tax payment required when contributed or while invested; RMD’s are the tools used ultimately to require or force a minimum annual “taxable” withdrawal from the account.

In the past, generous contributors or tithers to churches have opted to itemize their deductions to reduce their tax liability. Coupled with other itemized deductions, this total often exceeded the standard deduction in the tax code. However, lately the standard deduction has been greatly increased and is now $24,800+ for a couple filing jointly in 2020 therefore eliminating many filers from itemizing and benefiting from charitable contributions. Hence creating the need for a QCD which allows a filer to still elect the standard deduction AND to derive a benefit from certain charitable gifts.

QCD’s in the tax codes are generally written for IRA’s (Individual Retirement Accounts) and, according to Mr. Baker, provide “tax benefits through ‘Qualified Charitable Distributions’ from an IRA for amount donated to charity (your church and/or other charitable organizations) being excluded from your gross income. You do NOT have to itemize to receive this tax benefit. And again, you can take the full amount of your RMD or any portion of it and have that amount excluded from your taxable income. Additionally, those who do not itemize also qualify for an “above the line” charitable deduction of up to $300; however, you must have receipts.”

Mr. Baker continues, “There are many articles available on this subject [such as Pub 590b, 571, and 1040 instructions]; however, to determine exactly how to engage this transaction, you should contact the financial institution which holds your IRA.” Such contact is especially important for holders of 401(k) and 403(b) investments. However, if 401(k) or 403(b) holders are unable to authorize a QCD from their RMD, Baker says, “you can convert your RMD or any portion of it to open an IRA and then take the amount as a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from the IRA.” Mr. Baker ended with this quote, “Every dollar used in support of ministry is helpful: ‘Little becomes much when put in the Master's Hands.’” I have done some research and it appears Mr. Baker’s suggestions provide an opportunity, through the tax code, to bless the church with continued contributions AND to still claim the standard deduction. Or at least that’s the way it looks to me…

Getting Back to Basics as “We Envision Our Way Forward Taking Care of God’s Business” Missions At Home Mission trips to Africa, Jamica and Haiti are exciting, that is true.

But do you know there are missions in the USA that the church is called to do.

There are the homeless out on the street They are cold in the winter and scorched in the heat They need blankets and it would be nice to have a tent Your presence in their community is God sent.

We have children that many ignore.

We have food enough for ourselves and a lot more.

There is food that we throw away But may carry a family another day.

We have many that are new poor, you know.

They lost their jobs and now they have no place to go.

Tornadoes, hurricanes and floods ravishing a town Knocking buildings down to the ground.

They are left with just a shell of a house Grateful to get out with children and a spouse But they need materials to staryt over again Until they can rebuild their land Ray Charles sang a song called “Georgia On My Mind” Wouldn’t it be nice if the CME churches all over the world Be on everyone’s mind And seen as being caring and kind?

The pandemic has taught us we can do a lot right here.

We can hand out food and other items at our churches without fear We can show we are true missionaries by reaching out to others Treating them as if they are our sisters and brothers Maybe when we are able to go back to worship inside They will remember who was there when for help they cried Maybe they have seen Jesus as we aided in their need Not only physically but spiritually also indeed.

So, let us get to work in this country where we dwell And help others so they will feel swell It will make us feel that we are a part of God’s plan Right here and not have to travel to other lands.

EFFECTIVE MINISTRY

Effective ffective ministry ministr inside or outside of the church walls calls for mental and physical action. To be effective, lay men and women must embrace the intent of building up the church and serving the needs of others (one’s neighbor) with humility and devotion to God. Mother Teresa, during her lifetime said, “Give your hands to serve and your hearts to love” and 1 Peter 4:10 says this, “Each of us should use whatever gift we have received to serve others as faithful stewards of God’s grace.”

We must, thus, become “ministry minded” - always realizing and remembering that ministry (being concerned about and addressing the needs of our neighbor) is not a vocation, but it is a mentality that drives one’s attitude and lifestyle; ministry is to be exercised regardless of one’s gifts or one’s calling. . . Seeking to have love and concern for others is in the middle of it all, for John 14:34-35 captures the words of Jesus when He said, “34 A new command I give you: Love one another.

As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Loving others does not mean that we must compromise our beliefs, but it does mean, however, that “Effective Ministry” must be characterized by a devoted concern that sacrificially seeks to promote and uplift our brothers and sisters both near and far.

In the midst of it all, as we carry out our ministry efforts let us look for balance balance that helps us to develop methods and approaches that encourage and minister to those who have made a commitment to God and His church as well as those in our communities who need our help and attention. Working with our Pastors, we must minister to the needs of those on the outside, as well as create processes and systems to help ensure that those on the inside do not fall between or through the cracks . . . I believe that the Great Commission compels us to strike a balance in our reaching, in our teaching, in our ministering to, and in retaining those who by faith, hope, and determination have already professed a new life in Christ. What is the result of “Effective Ministry?” I submit to us that “Effective Ministry” efforts will encourage individuals to love God more deeply and develop an understanding of and an appreciation for our Zion!

Ministers’ Spouses, Widows and Widowers - A Call to Persevere During our season of reflection and renewal we give thanks to God, our churches and congratulations, organizations, community agencies, civic partnerships and collaborative who have and continue to support the work we do throughout the Connection among the churches and communities we serve in ministry. The impact and effects of the pandemic have presented us with challenges in the livelihood of our ministries, membership, congregations and families. We all have been sharing our stories of the challenges we’ve faced, effects of the pandemic, racial discrimination, social violence, social injustices, unemployment climate change, food deserts, weather disasters, ongoing dLsparities of healthcare, grief, hHLJKWHQHG levels of mental stress and concerns overall for our well being. I’m sure you could add more to the list.

Yet through it all, we have relied on the substance of our faith, prayer and love of personal families and the bond we share with our brothers and sisters in ministry. We have put forth efforts to help one another stay engaged while refocusing on the importance of self care through physical health, nutrition and wellness. In finding ways to maximize our effectiveness for the greater good, it has been a team effort. We have embraced chances to learn anew and grow while doing all we can to maintain the fellowship with one another. Moreover, we are grateful for the world of advanced technology and the technology experts, family and friends or neighbors that have made it possible for the MSWWD Department to stay connected and resourceful in its many capacities of service. The ministers’ spouses, widows and widowers have learned to become more creative with organizing ourselves, services, meetings, and skills in maintaining our organization mission, goals, duties and responsibilities. For this, we are thankful to God for these transformative opportunities that have carried us over to a season of revitalization; showing us how we can rebuild from different life transitions, adversities, and unfortunate tragedies that have left the stain of loss in our hearts, minds and spirits.

In introspection, we have been provided the time, respite, resources, revelations and the remissions needed to put us on a more perfect path of existence. We have witnessed over the past 12-14 months our ability to be resilient and reliant on someone much greater than ourselves and anything under the heavens. Therefore, with visions of hope and much prayer, let us go forth and continue to serve our Lord, His people, our communities and our country with gladness in the perfect will of Jesus the Christ, our sovereign King.

During this time of reflecting and restoration, we have been fortunate in the 4th Episcopal District to take part in countless meditations DQG inspirational and vesper programs from across our membership. These have brought forth blessings of strength and perseverance. Today, we wish to share with each of you our prayers of faith. We pray that God will continue to be the light force that will keep all of us diligent in carrying forward the lessons learned from the impact of the pandemic (and other vicarious challenges) into the next quadrennial of our service, work and ministry. “The Black Church?”

I believe most African American historians would agree that Black people in America, by and large, identify more keenly with persons who are seen as liberators. Slaves saw in the Moses’ figure in the bible, a man whom God had used, unqualified as he saw himself to be, but used by God to “Go tell Pharoah to ‘let my people go’” This gave them the courage to endure the most horrific form of chattel slavery the world has ever known, because the slave knew God was on their side, thus they could sing, “Up above my head, I hear music in the air, there must be a God somewhere.” They thus saw in Jesus as the Son of God, a hope that one day God would ultimately free them from their servitude and bondage and thus they also sang defiantly, “And before I’ll be a slave, I’ll be buried in my grave and go home to my Lord.” It was an understanding that God was a liberator of the oppressed and that no matter how long the struggle, or what the struggle (Civil Rights; education; economic empowerment) God would see us through to the promised land.

If we learned anything from this past election cycle and more specifically, January 6th, we saw that this nation is deeply divided as it relates to this notion of race, freedom and equality and social standing.

If you step back and examine the language of the so called “MAGA” movement, it is rooted in the notion of White Supremacy which is, and has been, from its founding shortly after the civil war, married to the White Evangelical Church. Now I know that might sound harsh to some (And I do not have the time in this space to expound on that notion), but one only need look to a statement made back in 1980 by televangelist Pat Robertson at a “Washington for Jesus” Rally to affirm this fact. Robertson stated, “We (And he meant, primarily, White Christians) have together with the Protestants and Catholics, enough votes to run the country.” By “running the country” I contend that what he meant was running it the way most White Evangelicals and White Supremacists believed; a country where Blacks and minorities were reduced 16

Phillips School of Theology to the lowest roles possible and that their votes, their voice and power would be scaled down and suppressed by any means necessary.

What we are thus seeing today in the states of Georgia, Tennessee, Arkansas, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Alabama, Kentucky, Louisiana, and Florida with new election bills in the various state legislatures, are just such attempts to disenfranchise black and minority voters so that they will not have an impact on any elections and therefore keep their agenda front and center.

The Black Church then, with the understanding of liberation, freedom and justice for all people, is duly bound to do everything in her power to counter such ideology and therefore, this notion of relevance comes clearly into focus. The ITC has adopted the posture that what we are doing with students who enter the doors of the ITC is to develop “Prophetic Problem Solvers” who examine the religious, social, economic and political climate of the day and begin to not only speak truth to power where wrongs have been perpetrated against marginalized people, but to do so with an understanding that the God of the bible, indeed the Jesus of Nazareth, has mandated the people of God (And I contend, the church) to do so.

Prophetic Problem Solving then, understands that the connection between the Church and those who are oppressed is not mutually exclusive, indeed they are inextricably bound together as a “Threefold chord unbroken” (God, The Black Church and The Holy Spirit).

Our task then is to look critically at institutions which practice modern day Jim Crowism and segregation camouflaged as neo-patriotism and politics and call them out for what they are: Institutions that exclude the very people they were set up to help. The attack on the Capital was not so much an attack to “Stop the Steal” as much as it was to declare to the world that White Supremacy is alive and well and will not sit idly by and let change force them out of power! Consider this fact: The House and Senate are poised to pass a 1.9 Trillion dollar COVID relief bill, yet not one single Republican Congressperson has

supported the bill. Indeed, embedded in the bill is a 120% loan forgiveness for Black Farmers who have been victims of racial discrimination, [many having] lost their farms as a result of the decadeslong agricultural policies in this country that overwhelmingly hurt them. Yet, Senator Lindsey Gram of South Carolina sarcastically called the bill a form of reparations for blacks only, totally ignoring the racist tactics used against Black farmers historically in his own state!

Consider that after the Civil war, in which the Confederacy lost, and those who survived were forced to take an oath to the United States before they could receive any benefits from the Union … after President Lincoln was assassinated … the Federal Troops that were kept in the South to protect the newly freed slaves were quickly removed, and what took place were systematic massacres of Blacks who had been given voting rights and who began to be in positions of power throughout the South. Shortly after, monuments to former Confederate Generals and Confederate leaders were set up just to remind the former slave

of his/her place; indeed, monuments that still stand today! Consider that what we are seeing in this country today is a blatant effort by some white political leaders to literally turn back the clocks to the era of Jim Crow and they are doing so unapologetically!

I cite these stories to remind the reader of the extraordinary parallels which existed just after the civil war and on January 6, 2021. More specifically, [consider] how they continue to cast the dark shadow of ineptitude on this country and its leadership. The power of the Black Church has and always will be the voice of God, indeed the “Voice of one crying in the wilderness” at times, to the people of God to stand up, speak up and let your voice be heard and to appeal to the so-called “Moderate” voices who simply sit on the sidelines knowing what is taking place yet are muted with an appalling silence. This is NOT a call to the “Black Church” to engage in militant behavior; however, it is a call to the church “Militant” to be what God has destined her to be before we can become the “Church Triumphant.”

NaƟonal Youth & Young Adult Week Philippians 3:12-14 “PRESS”

On Sunday, January 31, 2021, worship service was called to order and facilitated by Trinity’s youth and young adults.

Ms. Angela Michelle McClendon was the preacher of the hour. Angela, a graduate of Indiana University– Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), earned a BA in Liberal Arts in 2019, and in the same year earned a CerƟficate in Theology from the InterdenominaƟonal Theological Center in Atlanta GA (via Phillip Temple -Walker’s School of Ministry in Indianapolis).

She is a member of Breeding Tabernacle CME Church, assistant director of the Board of ChrisƟan EducaƟon, and the daughter of Rev. and Mrs. A.C. McClendon, Jr. Her father serves as pastor of Breeding CME. Ms. McClendon’s Ɵtle was, “Don’t Look Back; You’re Not Going that Way.” It was a very deliberate, thoughtprovoking, and Ɵmely message for NaƟonal Youth & YA Week (Passionate, Relevant, EssenƟal, Sincere, Service) P.R.E.S.S. Angela referenced and used the image of an “athlete” and the importance of his/her being disciplined. She furthered said all athletes have one thing in common, they must all Train (pracƟce, drill and be repeƟƟve) to win the prize or achieve his/her goals; in other words, you must be prepared. She compared this methodology to Paul as he spoke to [the church at] Philippi. He encouraged them that to have joy in the Lord they must: keep running the race and be diligent, be dedicated, fast, pray, study God’s Word, and seek wise counsel.

Submissions Continued from previous page In conclusion, McClendon reemphasized to all of us that if we are to become “P.R.E.S.S.,” we must examine ourselves first; be knowledgeable in God’s Word; remain steadfast, strong, dedicated, and resilient; and have stamina to stay in the race and achieve our goal(s). Lastly, we are not looking back because our treasure and prize is before us.

The Y & YA’s were engaged in a week of acƟviƟes and events. Some of the nightly acƟviƟes included round table discussions, seƫng goals, (short/long-term), journalizing, Bible study, bible jeopardy, canvas painƟng with a twist, and virtual healthy family cooking.

Youth & YA Week ended on February 7 with our own Pastor Obie. The Sermon was enƟtled, “You BeƩer Push.”

Pastor Obie explained how Paul was wriƟng to remind others that they should sƟll have Joy and trust in the Lord and have no confidence in the flesh. Paul talked about his personal trials and tribulaƟons; however, he remained faithful and focused in his ChrisƟan race to achieve the prize of the higher calling in Christ Jesus. She further said that joy [is] a state of being because we know, as Paul knew, that God was/is working things out for our good.

In her discourse she referenced the acronym, P.R.E.S.S to broaden its connotaƟon and provided Principles essenƟal to P.R.E.S.S. P (Personal) in verses 4, 7,8,10, 11, 12,13, and 14. She stated that pressing is personal. "You got to press for yourself." No one else can do it for you.

R (RaƟonale) Your raƟonale won’t make sense to others someƟmes. However, if it makes sense to you, that’s all that maƩers.

E (Examine) Stop observing others and look at yourself and your ways. Start looking at the man in the mirror.

S (Sight) We need to have a spiritual vision. We must see ourselves in the "not yet" posiƟon but know that it is coming.

S (Stamina) Hang on in there when you feel like leƫng go.

In other words, she said, “We have to keep pressing. Press unƟl we reach our goal,” because the race is not to the swiŌ nor to the strong but those who can endure to the end. Her ending remarks to us: “keep on striving, keep on teaching, keep on reaching, keep on praying, keep on believing, keep on fasƟng, keep on working, keep on studying, and keep on Pressing.

This collaboration distributed 1,555 masks, 311 hand sanitizers, 1,150 pairs of gloves, 311 COVID-19 information sheets, 45 Christian bracelets, and 311 Salvation tracts, in addition to food and prayers in several communities.

His sermon, “Get On Step,” encouraged us to “Get On Step” and stay in step with God. He encouraged us to be obedient and reminded us that what God promises will come to pass.
