Everybody Can Give ... Well, Almost

In this coronavirus (COVID-19) time, there is much that can be talked about that concerns the church, or its members, or both. These can be placed into three categories: medical, social, and spiritual. Certainly, the big media outlets are covering the medical aspect, and the social aspect is being covered everywhere. Mayors and governors are taking the lead in government's response to the crisis, and President Trump and other federal officials and legislators are also responding. Most church and religious organizations have taken heed to issued health warnings and calls for social isolation and are limiting, if not, temporarily suspending member contact through gathered worship services and church meetings.

As for the CME Church, we were among the first to call for limited contact and then Editor suspension of public religious services and meetings, suggesting the use of social media platforms and other forms of modern technology a substitutes for a face-to-face, physical presence. Members and leaders who have exhibited symptoms or have tested positive for the virus are responsibly going into self-quarantine, while others of our denomination who have responsibilities and ministries of public service continue to put their very lives at risk so that others may have the possibility of improved or restored health, and continued enjoyment of some of life's privileges.

I have heard and read of churches and individuals who are preparing food for those in the community who are sick and shut-in, offering tutoring and child care, carrying or sending hot food to hospital workers and first responders, and giving such things as canned goods and diapers out of their own pantries and closets to those who find only empty shelves in places they once took for granted would always be stores of plenty.

We do not know how long we and the world will be in such a state of isolation and shut-down. Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari just yesterday, March 29, 2020, ordered a 14-day shut down of the major cities of Lagos and Abuja for two weeks, after, I believe, just one reported death and a relatively low number of confirmed infections from the virus. Only God knows. In the meantime, everybody can do and give something to help others. The church is no exception to this statement. Like other entities in the world we cannot escape this pandemic and its impact on every facet of life. However, in the face of all that has already been stated and not even mentioned regarding all that is being done, there is one thing I have not yet mentioned.

What I have not mentioned is giving. Specifically, I mean the giving of tithes and offerings to our local churches, and the payment of apportionments and support to presiding elders' and episcopal districts, and thus to the general church. In these times when many are being laid off from work, and almost everyone is in limbo regarding the future of their employment, we know that the demand on the church continues. Further, members who fall on hard times, even temporarily, will and should call on their local church for assistance, to whatever degree that assistance can be given.

These are midnight times when our neighbor members may very well come knocking on our door to ask for bread (Luke 11:5-8). We all are become desert people of various sorts (Mark 6:35-44), but the church is commanded to look to the needs of others as God provides, following the example of Christ (Philippians 2:4). The opportunity is here, even with self-distancing, isolation, and quarantine. How are we responding?

In discussions with other church leaders, some have responded by implementing or bolstering the use of electronic giving methods, such as Givelify (greatly promoted and used by many in our denomination), Tithe.ly, Cash App, PayPal, and Zelle, to name a few; while others have facilitated or implemented the Class Leader system or a similar model to receive offerings with limited personal contact; drive by or drive-in giving; and the basic mail-in offering envelope, all to varying degrees of success. This is not an endorsement of any particular method, though lesser physical contact is highly encouraged. Rather, the point is that churches and leaders are exploring avenues to meet the challenges of the day in order to give members the opportunity to give monetarily in support of the ongoing ministry of the church.

Yes, there are some persons who have nothing to give but their service and their prayers, and this is infinitely valuable. We all should be giving these two things. However, many of those who have the means to give financially to their church are still waiting for some direction and the opportunity to give. This is not a time to not give. Will you deny persons who CAN financially support their local church and community the OPPORTUNITY to give and thus to fulfill their commitment to Christ, to their fellow Christian, and to the church? Almost everybody can give something.

Creative Thinking for Crisis Times

By Senior Bishop Lawrence Reddick Dear CME Family, In response to coronavirus challenges, the President and the CDC are asking people to not assemble in groups larger than 10. Many of us, in response, are working diligently to ramp up our streaming services, but also, many of us are simply cancelling services. My question to you is: how creative are you willing to be?

In a church room in Alabama in 1987, two pastors – one white, one black – sat with leaders of their respective congregations, trying to negotiate a purchase. A contract was before them that had been negotiated by the white pastor and the previous black pastor. I was the new black pastor, having succeeded a leader who had died, and I was fighting for the interpretation of the contract which had been passed to the congregation by the previous pastor. The room was tense with racial and testosterone undertones; there were about 5 leaders from both congregations, and a white attorney hired by our side. Two names should be called: S. William Harris, our chair of the trustee board, and G. William Noble, our white attorney (and now judge).

At an uptight moment, the white pastor, using the tactic of “divide to conquer,” turned his attention away from me and said to the trustee chair, “Mr. Harris, do you agree with Rev. Reddick?” Mr. Harris, about 75-80 years old, answered like only a very wise old black man would answer: “I agree with Mr. Noble.” I couldn’t believe it! You almost have to be a pre-1970 Southerner to really appreciate his tactic, for he pivoted the effort to divide two black men by spinning the disagreements into the arena of the two white men. Nothing else was said.

The heritage of African Americans as oppressed people who came to the U.S. not by “migration” but by “forced enslavement” is a heritage of people who learned to wisely, cunningly, subtly outthink the oppressor, and to speak in creative, nuanced, hidden ways.

Now is the time for creative thinking. It may not be as simple as saying, “We must close.” Why not? Because people need ministry in crisis. Meeting this coronavirus crisis, when we’ve been asked to congregate in groups of 10 or less, requires thinking that is more flexible than simply saying, “We must close.”

I applaud the congregations that are ramped up to provide worship services on line, that are streamed for people across the country to see. But for those who are not capable of it, your creative thinking and prayers for new insights can come up with some new and fresh ideas.

If your church cannot stream services, have you considered services by conference call?

Remember, if you try it, that worship does not have to be a structured prayer here, a song by the choir there, a “we have always done it this way” effort. Venture out! Make it something new! (But be sure and plan it!) Have someone ready with a CD that lifts praise! Have another person prepared to pray – not a long, lengthy, “in church” prayer (because people’s attention spans may be shorter when they cannot see), let the pastor read a short Scripture and give a short meditation or a one-point message. It may not match what you would have called “having church” 20 years ago, but it may well nourish your people at the point of their present needs, and what we may all experience from it is God stretching us in the process, enlarging the tents of our minds as to what worshipping God and nurturing God’s people really are.

As I arose this morning, I remembered a book – David Yonggi Cho’s SUCCESSFUL HOME CELL GROUPS.1 Cho is pastor of the largest congregation in Seoul, South Korea (some consider it the largest in the world). When the church was growing phenomenally, he was challenged to find a way to take personal nurture to the entire membership. He empowered a group of leaders to, in turn, become leaders of cell groups meeting in homes. So, he nurtured the leaders who, in turn, nurtured the church. (Yes, it’s the old class leader system.) Pastor, have you considered meeting with 7-9 people on Saturday morning, ministering to them, and in turn giving them authority to minister on Sunday during regular worship time by way of telephone conference calls to a worship group of just a few? or to their own family gathered at home? as they follow through with the very nurturing you gave to them the day before? Be creative.

To quote the late Bishop Joseph C. Coles, Jr.: “Don’t let what you cannot do keep you from doing what you can!”

Pastors, Ministers, and Lay Leaders: I challenge you to pray for God to give you fresh insights that will keep your congregation nourished, spiritually blessed, and encouraged during this time of crisis. Do more than just close your church doors.

“From Where I Sit …”

Surviving the “Stay at Home” Mandate!

Most of us are caught in the middle of the tug-of-war that mandates us to stay at home while yet attempting to attend to those responsibilities that take us out of the home. I don’t know about you but trying to stay at home is a tough challenge! The good news is that we’re becoming accustomed to it and it seems that our staying more at home is working!

One of the challenges I had to address was the emotional burden borne from this crisis. Needing to keep up with the issues of the day required me to monitor reports from the various news outlets and the enormity of the pandemic and its associated impact on our economy added to my emotional burden. Like many others I too have had up days and down days. Yes, I’m admitting my humanity and the realization of the simple fact that this is a dangerous time that can only be faced with our faith.

However in my reflections, I remembered a 2017 news article in my hometown weekly newspaper drawn from the internet titled “Tips to help deal with burdens of life” and I thought I would share a few that might during such a “time as this” bring some reflective thought or humor to you as it did for me: • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Drive carefully. It’s not just cars that can be recalled by their maker.

Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, because then you won’t have a leg to stand on.

When everything’s coming your way, you’re probably in the wrong lane.

Always keep you words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them.

Remember! It’s the second mouse that gets the cheese.

Never buy a car you can’t push.

If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

If you can’t be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.

Birthdays are good for you. The more you have, the longer you live.

A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.

Accept that some days you’re the pigeon, and some days you’re the statue.

You may be only one person in the world, but you may also be the world to one person.

We can learn a lot from crayons… Some are pretty, some are sharp, and some are dull. Some have weird names, and all are different colors. But they all must live in the same box.

I hope these nuggets have been helpful. We may not be able to change the time in which we are living, but with a grounded faith and little humor, we can do something about the way in which we live. Or at least that’s the way it looks to me …

Getting Back To Basics as “We Envision Our Way Forward Taking Care of God's Business”

This is not business as usual!

What used to be normal no longer is in many cases. It’s very presumptuous of those who may be doing well to not consider those who may not be (due to loss of jobs, family, friends, routines, etc.). Jesus died to save us from ourselves - arrogance, selfishness and doing business as usual that was outside of God’s will. The Resurrection changed things stopped the world from its usual existence. Let your change be evident; don’t keep trying to do business as usual. Retired Sr. Bishop William H. Graves would often say, “Things don’t just happen; you have to make them happen.”

Over the last few months, the phrases “shelter in place” and “social distancing” have been introduced to all of us. Some caught on quickly while others were slow to understanding, but we arrived at a place of acceptance of this new normal. Whether we like it or not, the ecclesia was forced to change, and God showed once again who is really in charge. It saddens me, but I have also heard another, more familiar phrase, “I can’t wait until things get back to normal.” Well, beloved, that will never happen.

Many of our churches were caught off guard and scrambling to keep the normal; due to the fact that we were not ready for change.

The body of Christ has a responsibility to community and each other. The new normal has not been defined, yet! But in many cases the church has not seen the need to be proactive instead of reactive.

So, I challenge you not to respond but to create your new normal. Business as usual can be seen in the rear-view mirror. Forge a new path for the ministries in your church.

Now is the time to start finding ways to connect people with services such as grief and trauma counselors, a time to connect with your local farmers to buy fresh fruits and vegetables and invite the members and community to shop for free. We can provide resources or set up a job fair at church, and much more.

I hear you say that first we must get through our current situation. Yeah, but let me put you on notice. I’m not working to ignore the current situation, but vision looks ahead. Yes, there are challenges, but vision moves beyond the normal. We don’t do the work alone, Paul reminds us: 5 Not that we are competent of ourselves to claim anything as coming from us; our competence is from God, 6 who has made us competent to be ministers of a new covenant, not of letter but of spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. 2 Corinthians 3:5-6 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) When God allows the church to enter the Church again, we cannot settle into business as usual. We must seize the moment, grab the bull by the horns, go for it. The community is looking for the Church to make a difference.

Many people today are convinced they don’t need the church and that they can worship just as well in front of their television at home. So why do we worship in a congregation? Below are eight reasons: 1.

to help people come into the presence of the Lord (Psalm 100:1-2) to glorify God and to enjoy God (Psalm 50:23; 16:11, Revelation 5:13) to help get the Word of God into our minds (Colossians 3:16) to stimulate the exercise of the gifts in the service (1 Corinthians 14:24-25) to stimulate the ministry of the Word of God to make us aware of God’s awesome power (Isaiah 6:3) to celebrate the finished work of Christ and our salvation history (Revelation 1:5-6; Exodus 15; Psalm 136) to help unify people (Jeremiah 31:12)

I will add theologically God has created us to be in community and to be in relationship with each other. No one can make the case that the Christian faith is theoretical. It is not a system of thought, a bank of words, or a collection of ideas. Ultimately the Christian faith is about living in relationship and community.

Try as we might to clean up Christianity, this faith of ours always brings us back to the same place—the church. What Jesus leaves on this earth to continue his work is the church. I know people who like the idea of religion, but they don’t want the church. Some folks enjoy the warm, pleasant feelings that come from spiritual thinking, but they don’t want the church. Some are excited by the idea of love, but they don’t want the church.

Some people certainly want heaven for eternity, but they don’t want the church for today. This is a problem because, like it or not, if we are going to follow Jesus, we are going to be involved in the church. The church is often called the “bride of Christ.” Someone said, “I love Jesus. I just wish he wouldn’t bring his leprous bride every place he goes.” But church and Jesus go together like “love and marriage” or “horse and carriage.”

So just pause and reflect for a moment. Easter has come. The tomb has been emptied. The Lord has appeared to his disciples, and the announcement has gone forth: “He is alive!” Jesus is alive! Where do we find him for ourselves? Where do we experience his aliveness in personal ways? The answer is through the fellowship of the redeemed, in the quarters of the church, in the embrace of the manifestation of the body of Christ.

What I am saying elevates the church to a status that some may not appreciate. In Acts 2, we get a glimpse of the church in its earliest moments, and it is a beautiful thing to behold. The people are united, everyone is attentive to the teaching of the apostles, no one misses a service or a Bible study, there are enough volunteers for every task, folks are giving generously to support the church, and people are lining up to join.

This is going to be a mega church.

However, if you know your Bible and the story of the church, you know this way of life does not last.

Soon the church will be dealing with all sorts of unpleasant matters. By the fifth chapter, folks are dropping dead in the church for lying about their financial support. We’re talking about lying about their pledge. Hello!

Is this the church? Yes, this is the church. This is the “holy, catholic church” we affirm and believe in.

This church is the aftermath of Easter. Do you want to experience the living Christ? Go to the church. Oh, I know there will be frustration. The church likes to “major in the minors,” quarreling over the most foolish things. It seems, at times, to enjoy poor health and to love complaining. I know all this. But I also know that if you want to find Jesus, it will be in his church.

The Christian faith is never theory. It is not about religious thinking. The Christian faith is about relationship. In the midst of the comings and goings of our lives, the risen Christ appears, community happens, and the church takes shape.

THE GUIDING PRINCIPLES OF CME LAY MINISTRY: “A REMINDER FOR SOME - KNOWLEDGE FOR ALL” - PART I Over the next several months, I will highlight our four (4) Lay Ministry Beliefs, our Mission, and our fifteen (15) Lay Ministry Objectives, all of which form the Guiding Principles of CME Lay Ministry. June 2020 will focus on the Lay Ministry Beliefs of Studying, Seeking, Sharing, and Serving.

STUDYING means to study to show oneself knowledgeable; be one who is continually growing in the understanding and the interpretation of the God’s Word, and of the procedures, organizational structure, history, laws, and doctrines of the CME Church. Read and study about our world and the generations that make up the society. This allows laity to stay on the cutting edge of the changes and diversity that defines our universe. The scriptural foundation for this belief is 2 Timothy 2:15, which says, “Study to show

thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

SEEKING means to seek God first; seek out lost or misdirected souls; seek out fellow lay men and women who may have become discouraged and now need a helping hand or a word of encouragement.

Additionally, we should continuously seek and know what God’s will is for our lives. This leads us to two (2) foundational scriptures: Matthew 6:33 reads, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” and 1 Corinthians 10:24 (NOB) says “Let no one seek his own good, but that of his neighbor.”

SHARING is defined as giving back to God and his church a portion of that which God has given to us. As laity we must accept the role of bringing about a greater awareness and commitment among members in being a cheerful and consistent tither and generous giver. We must also share our time, talent, and spiritual gifts in way that will keep God’s church steady and strong. The scriptural foundation is Malachi 3:8-10, which reads this way: “Will a man rob God? Yet you are robbing Me! Yet you say, How have we robbed Thee? In tithes and offerings. (9) “You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing Me, the whole nation of you! (10) “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this, “says the Lord of hosts, “if I will not open for you the windows of heaven, and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows.”

SERVING means that the laity’s role is that of a servant; one who models by precept and example concern for and responsiveness to the needs of his/her neighbor and the body of Christ. “God does not provide air for us to breath and minds to think with, for us to stay focused and wrapped up in ourselves.” We must, thus, serve so that others may grow in confidence and we must support the development and growth of others. The scriptural foundation for this belief is Ephesians 4: 11-12, -“And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists and some as pastors and teachers, (12) for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ.”

“Studying, Seeking, Sharing and Serving should be every Christian’s focus, whether one is part of an active lay ministry council or not. None of us were placed here (in the world) to simply take up space, therefore the CME Lay Ministry Beliefs serve as a solid foundation for all who believe in the word of God and seek to do His will!”

Pastor Ricks Worthy to be Honored Submitted by Betty A. Davis and Chester Ricks, Jr. "I am convinced that love is the most durable power in the world. It is not an expression of impractical idealism, but of practical realism. Far from being the pious injunction of a Utopian dreamer, love is an absolute necessity for the survival of our civilization. To return hate for hate does nothing but intensify the existence of evil in the universe. Someone must have sense enough and religion enough to cut off the chain of hate and evil, and this can only be done through love."

These words were uttered by the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1957. However, they can easily reflect the life of a great man of faith in today's society - Reverend Chester Ricks. Reverend Ricks has exemplified the true meaning of the mantra, "Send Me, I'll Go!" He has pastored numerous churches within the Second Episcopal District.

He served the Phillips congregation from 1984 through 1990. The Lord Jesus Christ and the Presiding Bishop decided to send Reverend Ricks back to us in July 2011 [and he is] currently serving as the Senior Pastor of Phillips Memorial Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, 839 West North Bend Road, Cincinnati, Ohio, 45224.

On December 15, 2019, a major milestone was reached by Pastor Ricks. On this day, the members of Phillips Memorial celebrated Pastor Chester and First Lady Victoria Ricks. This surprise celebration marked the Reverend's birthday, and his fifty-year anniversary of ministry to spread the word and great works of our Lord Jesus Christ in the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.

During the 11:00 a.m. morning service, we were blessed to have numerous friends, family and acquaintances assist us in this honor. Special expressions were extended by Bishop Marvin Frank Thomas (Presiding Prelate of the Second Episcopal District) and Presiding Elder Tracy L. Jackson (Cincinnati/Dayton/Indianapolis District). Our celebration culminated with a delectable and scrumptious dinner orchestrated by Cincinnati native Kymberly Wilbon (Personal chef to some of the Cincinnati Bengals and owner of The Passion Plate).

On Sunday, January 26, 2020, members of the General Officers Council of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church shared with the Mt. Pisgah CME Church, Memphis, Tennessee, during their 10:45 a.m. worship service. Their attendance was a part of the General Officers' three-day Retreat.

We were hosted by Officer Jacqueline I. Scott (President, Women's Missionary Council) and Pastor Willie Ward, who delivered the message for the Youth Day Celebration. The young people in the photo represented Mount Pisgah’s K-12 Scholars for the 2nd Nine-Week Grading Period. We were hosted for the Retreat by Carmichael D. Crutchfield (Department of Christian Education and Formation; and President of the Council), who introduced the members of the Council who were present, gave remarks and delivered the benediction.

In addition to Dr. Crutchfield and Mrs. Scott, other General Officers present were: Dr. Victor Taylor (Department of Finance and Investments), Dr. Tyrone Davis (Department of Personnel Services), Dr. Roderick Lewis (Department of Publication Services), Dr. Pene' Woods (Executive Secretary), and Dr. William George, Retired (Department of Publication Services). Westside Lay Council Celebrates HBCU’s Submitted by Carl Montgomery, Lay Leader

The Lay Council of Westside Community Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, (Atlanta, Georgia) celebrates Historical Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU's) each fifth Sunday. Recognizing the importance of HBCU’s in the development of the Christian and African Methodist Episcopal Churches, the Council adopted the support of HBCU’s as an outreach ministry.

HBCU’s were formed from the need of African Americans to equip themselves for social and political change by attending schools of higher education.

The first HBCU's were founded in Pennsylvania and Ohio before the American Civil War (1861–65) with the purpose of providing black youths with a basic education and training to become teachers or tradesmen. Racial discrimination prohibited black youth from attending established colleges and universities.

Following the end of the Civil War and the abolition of slavery, HBCUs were founded throughout the South with support from the Freedmen’s Bureau, a federal organization that operated during Reconstruction to help former slaves adjust to freedom, and the American Baptist Home Mission Society, an organization that helped establish several historically black colleges.

HBCU’s play a pivotal role in educating Black Americans. Historical Black Colleges and Universities were a force during Reconstruction to combat illiteracy and racism in higher education. The Lay Council understands the relevance and continued significance of

the need to maintain HBCU’s in the 21st Century. The survival of these great institutions should be driven by our support.

Each fifth Sunday, the Lay Council of Westside physically and financially supports one selected HBCU. Representatives and alumni from the college worship with the Westside CME Church family. A short presentation is given, funds are collected specific to the college, then donated thereto. Our goal is to increase the percentage of donors for the college while elevating the level of support the college has garnered.

Institutions recognized by Westside include: Paine College (Augusta, Georgia); Morris Brown College, (Atlanta, Georgia); Vorhees College, (Demark, South Carolina); Bennett College, (Greensboro, North Carolina); Morehouse College, (Atlanta, Georgia) and Allen University, (Columbia, South Carolina).

HBCU’s have been a mainstay of educating our African American youth. The Westside Lay Council has selected this outreach mission to ensure the continued success of HBCU’s. Historical Black Colleges and Universities need our support to ensure preservation of these great institutions on our historical timeline.

PURE Service is P.U.R.E. Gold!!!

The P.U.R.E Gold Youth Ministry of Trinity CME Church of Miami lives the church’s Motto of “Faith, Worship, and ACTION!!! Under the leadership of Rev. Marquise L. Hardrick, Sr, the Miami, Florida-based church has a passion towards Mission and Outreach, and the Youth Department is leading the way!

On January 4, 2020, the Youth Department prepared and served lunch to the residents of the Ronald McDonald House in Miami through the organization’s Adopt-A-Meal Program. With a menu of Baked Fish, Jasmine Rice, Green Beans, Yeast Rolls, Garden Salad, Assorted Cakes and Drink, the Youth and their Chaperones arrived early to take over the kitchen. Once the meal was prepared, the youth not only nourished the resident’s bodies, but their spirits as well through Prayer, Scripture, and Song!

The Youth also participated in the house’s “Pop Tab” Program. Before their departure, they gifted a large box filled with Pop Tabs, which the organization converts to cash to fund the needs of the residents and the home.

The Youth Ministry has partnered with RMHC since 2018 and participates in Adopt-A-Meal 2-3 times per year and submits “Pop Tabs” all year round. They love having the opportunity to hone their Culinary Skills all while Ministering and Giving Back!!

On Friday, February 1, 2020, during Connectional Youth and Young Adult Week, the ministry participated in a Day of Service at Irving’s Lodge – Cerebral Palsy Adult Home, Inc. in Dania Beach, Florida. Their theme for CYYA Week was “THE BLUEPRINT,” and their Scripture was 1 Timothy 4:12: “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in faith, and in purity.”

After the presentation, the youth got a tour of the facility. Later, they served the residents lunch, prayed and fellowshipped, and played some very competitive rounds of B-I-N-G-O. Once again, the youth got the opportunity to serve while learning about the residents, their achievements, and their challenges as persons with disabilities. It was a great time had by all!

Serving the Table of God's Precious Children Submitted by Shelia Dukes

On December 1, 2019, the Arkansas Region Stewardess Ministry donated knitted hats, gloves and scarfs to Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas. Stewardesses from each district - led by District Presidents Michelle Richardson and Maxie Blakley, and Region President and Vice President Shelia Dukes and Maude Hickey - collected and donated over 600 caps, scarfs, gloves, stuffed animals and pillows to the hospital’s annual drive. After collecting items, including toys, the children are allowed to select items for the Christmas season.

This project is an ongoing ministry for the Region Stewardesses. As of 2019, the ministry has donated thousands of knitted caps. In addition to caps, the ministry donated a limited number of toys, gloves, scarves and slippers. Arkansas Children's Hospital is the only pediatric medical center in Arkansas and one of the largest in the United States serving kids from birth to age 21. The region Stewardesses are always excited about providing for the children and look forward to the project every year.

The Arkansas Region is under the leadership of Presiding Prelate Henry M. Williamson Sr.; Presiding Elders Rev. Don White Sr. (West District) and Rev. Ronald Williams (East District); and Sister Shelia Dukes, Arkansas Region Stewardess President.

A special thanks to the Connectional Stewardess President Sister Jolinda Dugger; East District President Sister Maxie Blakley, and West District President Sister Michelle Richardson.

A Summons To Call Upon God’s People To Pray

One morning, Friday, March 20, 2020, while meditating in The Upper Room devotions book on the reading of John 9:1-25, I was touched and filled with questions as the Spirit hit me as I reflected on the coronavirus that has moved across the world. In John 9:1-25, Jesus saw a man who had been blind from birth. “Teacher”, his disciples asked him. “Why was this man born blind? Was it a result of his own sins or those of his parents? Jesus answered, “He was born blind so that the power of God could be seen in him.”

As I prayerfully meditated, these questions continued to come upon me. Just as in John 9, the news media has been pressing for answers from our President, his cabinet, and the medical experts like Dr. Fauci, similar to the disciples pressing Jesus for answers. People will press for answers amid trouble and the unknown. People will, unfortunately, press for answers while asking the wrong questions. Was this a fake crisis that came from a political play to gain more political power in the world? How much precedence should public health concerns have over economic concerns?

I have yet to hear a statement from any leaders in the faith community like those of the political, medical, and business communities. This silence has troubled me, as churches have often played a major role in communities and the nation when disaster strikes, especially in the Black community. Above all, the churches' absence from the conversation about the coronavirus has also absented the one who can change everything now, just as He did 2.000 years ago with the man born blind!

Those who are called by His name must speak out during this crisis, whether or not any media is around at first, for it is so that this coronavirus has come so that the power of God may be manifest in the United States and the world.

Just as with the man born blind, the Lord wants to manifest His power to do the impossible even with a global plague like the coronavirus. God wants His people to remind the world that God is the one “Who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name.” God wants the church to take charge of leading people, in this fearful and anxious time, back to the God who does the impossible and defeats the unbeatable, even if they are no reporters and television cameras around. The Church must do this earnestly but first prayerfully according to 2nd Chronicle 7:14, “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”

The Musings of a Troubled Heart Submitted by Rev. Charles E. Holbrook, Pastor Sweetwater CME Church, Prentiss, Mississippi

I see things differently now. When I was young and full of myself, I thought I could not die—that I would live forever. Well, that changed about age twenty-something when I was put on high blood meds. But even then I thought I could beat the system. Long story short, I’m now 66 years old and this coronavirus (COVID-19) has changed everything, or at the very least changed my perspective on things. A few years ago, I began to think about my mortality, well aware that my day is coming, but now I look at it differently. Now it’s more real and up close and personal.

I will be transparent. I have spent the last few days crying in my privacy—alone. Even now, my eyes swell with tears when I think about how people are afraid and suffering during this trying time. However, I think my wife, Pat, has detected it. She looks at me and gives me a hug and says nothing. When I was at Sweetwater this past Sunday before Sunday church school started, the SS superintendent shared this with me. He said he was driving somewhere that morning and The Lord spoke to him very clearly about what pastors are going through right now. What he said touched me in a way I am seldom touched—spiritually. I can’t put it exactly as he said it, but it spoke of the difficulty pastors are going through trying to lead their congregations in faith and being careful with this virus.

My Presiding Elder said something a couple of Sundays ago that solidified my determination to stay the course in the church and show the world that the Church is faithful. So we met and decided as a congregation to stay open but not disobey the laws of our state. One member who works at Sanderson Farms Chicken said he was willing to stay open because his plant is not going to shut down. But he called me the next evening and shared that one of his co-workers had been dismissed without pay because she had attended a worship service. She is an hourly employee, and that is going to hurt her and her family very badly.

So we met Wednesday [(March 25, 2020)] for Bible study—only nine of us—and we decided to do whatever we can possibly do to help people maintain their livelihood and stay healthy. At that point I said to those present, "We are literally putting our lives at stake because 10 or 100; it’s a roll of the dice every time we encounter people."

We live in fear of who we get close to and what objects we touch and even the air we breath. We cannot live like this. But most of us can be a little at peace because we can stay at our homes, but there are some who cannot.

They must go to work every day so that the rest of us can have our daily needs met. I love chicken, but I wish my member who works at Sanderson Farms could be at home too. But there are those in the medical profession, from clinics to hospitals to hospice. Every day—every day—they risk their lives so that others might live. Now don’t get me wrong. The human sacrifice for salvation has already been made, but the human sacrifice for daily life is still being made—every day!

So, I thank God for those courageous individuals who get up every morning and face their fears and walk out of their doors without hesitation and face the challenges of their day. I’m sure they would rather stay at their houses and homes with their families, but they leave with the clear understanding that things may drastically change before they punch the clock at 5:00 P.M. My prayer for them is simple: Lord keep them safe as they bravely work to keep the rest of us safe. In Jesus’ name! Amen!

Beebe Memorial (Hope, AR) Celebrates Black History Submitted by Monica Holston

Black History month came to an end for 2020, but our memories of the struggles our ancestors endured will never come to an end. Our ancestors sang spiritual songs during slavery and used prayer as a catalyst for divine intervention during the civil rights movement. Spirituality has shaped the lives of many African Americans, from the troubled past to our hopeful present. Here at Beebe Memorial CME Church, 416 North Hazel St. in Hope, Arkansas, where Monette Smith Shaw is the pastor, we celebrated Black History Month with a prayer breakfast, and by wearing a different color of the African flag on the first three Sundays and African Attire on the fourth Sunday. The membership also highlighted the contributions and achievements of numerous African Americans to our rich history.

The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. James 5:16

"Most of the people complaining about the church having PayPal, cashapp, or any other electronic means aren’t donating to the church so carry on with your ministries. We may not be able to meet in person but ministry continues. CHURCH Mortgages, salaries, utilities, bills haven’t stopped . More people than EVER are in need of the church’s benevolence requesting assistance and if we stop giving, how can the church help them? I don’t know about your church, but I can SEE the work my church does not only for those who are members of our church, but for those throughout the community. If you have the means to help, help. If you need help, call. If you don’t want to do either, hush. As I stated, in the grand scheme of things...those who take issue aren’t likely to be those who would give to a local church anyway, so if it makes it easier for those who do (it’s the only reason I had checks) I take a line from Dr. Seuss regarding church benevolence: 'Those who matter don’t mind, those who mind don’t matter.'"

Mt. Zion Celebrates 124 Years of Christian Service To God and the Community Submitted by Bro. Bruce Benson

On Sunday, February 9, 2020, the members of the Mt. Zion CME Church of Sharon Hill, Darby Township, Pennsylvania, under the pastorate of the Rev. Alfred S. Parker, Jr. and First Lady Terri Parker, began their year-long celebration of 124 years of continued service. Sis. Miranda King-Lane, former President of the Philadelphia Missionary Society, was the toastmistress for the occasion and Bro. Ken Thomas, Regional Lay Leader for the New York-Washington Region, read the scripture, Acts 4:29. Rev. Claudia Fillis gave the invocation and table blessing followed by a heart-stopping welcome by Sis. Sharon Mayo, a member of the local Missionary Society. The church history was a video presentation, but due to technical difficulties, the members acted out the rich history of the church followed by a memorial service led by Rev. Tyrone Fitzgerald. The church mass choir rendered inspiring music. Bro. Bruce Benson and Sis. Alice Evans were the event coordinators for the anniversary celebration. We must also recognize Rev. Andrea Marshall who organized a beautiful and plentiful candy table for the children.

The adults also enjoyed the “goodies” that were provided by the Seasoned Citizens Ministry. Rev. Parker gave final remarks and benediction for a well spent evening celebrating what God has done for us.

Mt. Zion got its humble beginning in the home of Sis. Vermie Smart at the corner of Clifton Avenue and Hook Road.

Rev. Harding was the first minister. A member named the new church Mt. Zion! The church was introduced into the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church in 1905. In 1954, the General Conference changed the name to the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church ...

The first building was located on the corner of Clifton Avenue and Hook Road and later moved to the northeast corner of Felton and Orange Avenues where it remains today. The congregation began to build the present edifice and on February 12, 1920, the congregation marched into their new church building. A tragic fire destroyed the new church building and the church was rebuilt and enlarged.

Mt. Zion served as the local school (Darby Township Public School) in the early 1930’s, housing grades 1,2, & 3. The junior high school held its graduation ceremonies in the church auditorium from 1934 until 1950.

The church helped many families purchase clothes and shoes for the students that could not afford the required white dresses and shoes for the graduation ceremony.

Vacation bible school was held at Mt. Zion for the entire community during the late 1930’s and 40’s. Our Sunday School Department was one of the largest in the Seventh Episcopal District for many years. One highlight of the Sunday School was the annual Sunday School picnic that rented buses to take the children to an amusement park. Students with good attendance were allowed to go free on the church picnic. These events sometimes cleared the entire community for the day!

Through the years, with the blessings from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, many improvements have been made to the church. A new bulletin board was erected, the parsonage was purchased and the

Submissions mortgage burning took place in 1982, and a public address system, new boiler, central air conditioning, light fixtures, pulpit furniture, stair lift and a new paved parking lot were installed. New rooms were added and the men’s and women’s rooms were renovated. A prayer room with a prayer box that is used by members was added.

New steel doors and stained glass windows were secured, and an active Food Ministry has been added and has been a part of our outreach ministry.

The church continues projects to renovate and replace objects to enhance and make our edifice comfortable for worship. A new roof was added, capping, a new floor in the lower auditorium, and the parsonage painted.

Bible study series are experiencing growth, the Lay Ministry has been revived and is active along with the M2M (Ministry to Men) and the Mighty Men of Valor Fellowship Choir. New ministries added include the Seasoned Citizens Ministry and the Angel Tree Ministry. Our Missionary Society also is an active ministry reaching out and serving the church and community.

During the annual conference held in August 2015, The Rev. Alfred S. Parker, Jr. was appointed pastor of Mt. Zion!

We are on the move for the Lord and we thank God for his favor over Mt. Zion “the Rock” and pray that we will continue to serve him in all of his glory!

Giving Back to the Community: A Way of Life for Russell Memorial CME Church Submitted by Jameria Self

On any given Sunday morning between 6 – 8:00 a.m., you will find a small group of dedicated congregants of Russell Memorial CME Church preparing hot breakfast for individuals who reside in the local homeless shelter in Durham, North Carolina. Not only are they fed physically, but they also receive spiritual nourishment by way of a short Bible lesson before they depart to work or other activities. This ministry serves 15-40 individuals each Sunday, and it’s just one of the many examples of how Russell Memorial gives to the community. For this church family, giving is a way of life.

Under the leadership of Pastor Jerry L. Christian, Jr., the congregation of Russell Memorial CME Church has embraced the notion of giving with dedication, deliberation and fervor. Since becoming the pastor of this historic church, Pastor Christian continues to inspire charitable giving by preaching messages that provoke thought, encourage compassion towards others, and highlight the myriad of spiritual benefits reaped through donations.

In addition to the Hot Breakfast Ministry, the church also works with the local food bank to provide a variety of food items to several families throughout the year. This charitable act provides food to more than 1,500 families per year. In November 2019, [one of the local higher education institutions], North Carolina Central University, heard about the tremendous efforts of the church and contributed a generous donation of $1,000.00 to Russell Memorial to help in the efforts of feeding those in need in the community. And it does not end there. This charitable donation recently became the gift that keeps on giving as Pastor Christian and the Russell Memorial Missionary Society presented a donation to Burton Elementary School on behalf of residents of the McDougald Terrace Housing Project in Durham.

Recently, the residents of McDougald Terrace have been subjected to sub-optimal living conditions and exposure to dangerously high levels of carbon monoxide, putting their lives at risk. Two recent infant deaths have been attributed to this carbon monoxide exposure.

Currently, nearly 270 of the 300 residents have been placed in various local hotels and need assistance from the community. The funds that Russell Memorial contributed will help the residents of this community stay afloat until they are allowed to move back to their homes.

In the meantime, Pastor Christian and the Russell Memorial church family still continue

Submissions to collect food, clothing, and personal items to help meet the everyday needs of McDougald Terrace residents as they wait for the Housing Authority to complete repairs and bring them back to their homes.

During the holiday season, Russell Memorial’s charitable activities abound. Members of Russell Memorial really step up to participate in a variety of ways. One of the most popular is the Angel Tree Prison Fellowship Ministry Program, which serves incarcerated parents every Christmas by mobilizing churches and organizations to minister to thousands of children by delivering a gift, the Gospel message, and a personal message of love on behalf of their mom or dad behind bars.

Russell Memorial CME has served 164 families through the joint efforts with the Angel Tree Prison Ministry.

Russell Memorial’s guiding principal for giving can be found in Galatians 6:9 (KJV), “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” As they approach a new decade, the church looks forward to continuing their charitable giving because they realize that life without giving is a life with no purpose.

[On November 21, 2019, Beebe Memorial Cathedral was the recipient of a Healthy Churches 2020 Best Practices Award! This award is given at the Healthy Churches conferences which are sponsored by the Balm in Gilead, a ministry founded by Dr, Pernessa Seele in 2019 which connects faith and public health, focusing on the needs and concerns of minorities. Our motto is:] You can eat the kale, drink the alkaline water, take the supplements, do yoga, pilates, high-intensity interval training, or hit the gym, but if you don't deal with the stuff going on in your heart and your mind you are still unhealthy! We encourage people to be healthy and to live healthily! We learned we had to work out the inner me before we became our own enemy!

At first it seemed like a nightmare But while wide awake I knew it was real It was a deadly virus you could not see Only hear reports of its deadly deed In isolation, I learned a lot about me What I could do if I stayed in And it has given me time to be a better friend To myself and others in ways beyond belief And the rewarding feeling that has come overshadowed What was gloom and doom and given me such a sense of renewed relief for in giving you truly receive an inner peace and such serenity that calms the soul and sets you free to live life as it was meant to be.

To know that the beginning and end are so Near, makes life more precious and we must live without fear.

Take this time for personal growth, concentrate on what you have, share your love, embrace your faith and think on those things that are positive, being the best you can be encourages me.

Of our day to day existence we now acknowledge that we have little or no control For our fate is in God’s hands And without Him We don’t stand a chance.

Special Notice: CYYAC20 Cancelled Dear CME Family, I greet you in the name of the One in whom we are formed and nurtured, Jesus the Christ. I am praying that you are in good health. The last several weeks have been a time of many things, but for me, the word “change” stands out.

The wise leadership of the College of Bishops has issued a call to cancel CYYAC20. I am in total agreement that at this time we cannot continue to plan for an event this summer with the looming presence of the COVID-19 global pandemic. Above all, our ultimate concern is the safety and well-being of our CME Church family and for all the people that we might have interaction.

The plan is to reschedule for the summer of 2021, however, at this point we do not have a date or contracted venue. As one who has planned CYYAC four previous times prior to CYYAC20, I am very aware of what must take place from this day forward. I even can anticipate the questions that you may have and there is no answer for them presently.

I ask of you to help me and the Department of Christian Education and Formation by giving us time, at least one month, to sort out where we go from here concerning CYYAC registrations, hotel reservations, dates, venues, etc. Emailing, texting, or calling me or the staff will not be very helpful. I promise you as we have communicated throughout the planning of CYYAC20, we will be just as diligent in our continual communication to you monthly.

It will not be helpful to call the hotel until you hear from the Department. Remember every entity in this country is working with minimum personnel. If there is a need for you to contact the hotel, the Department will communicate that to you.

The Department will continue to work diligently on behalf of you personally and the CME Church!

A PK's Perspective Submitted by Kristian Williams

I am proud to be a CME, but a preacher’s kid has to make many transitions and adjustments. I never once thought I would move from Houston, Texas, to Idabel, Oklahoma. I loved my school, Codwell Elementary. At the age of 4, I entered Pre-K at Codwell Elementary.

At my Kindergarten Graduation, I think I received every award possible. My family was amazed when I was named Valedictorian. They cheered so loud. In private, I asked Grammi, “What is a Valedictorian?”

Grammi smiled and said, “The smartest kid in the class.” I guess I was happy.

As I journeyed through Codwell, I was selected to participate in everything. I was the only kindergarten kid selected to participate in Karate. I was also a student leader. Every year more and more activities were added: choir, theatre arts, but my favorite was “Academic Sports.” I loved U.I.L. Reading and Writing Contests. At the end of the third grade I was inducted into the Codwell Elementary National Honor Society. I was excited because we were making history. It was the first Elementary National Honor Society. I was crushed when I discovered my life was about to change. I would not return to Codwell Elementary. I was leaving my familiar surroundings, my activities, and my friends. I was moving to Idabel, Oklahoma, far, far away from Houston, Texas. It was a long ride with a lot of time to think. What would my life be like? What would my new school be like?

Would the new school have academic sports? I love competing. It was my passion. It made learning fun.

The first day at Central Elementary, I had questions I wanted answered. I asked about “Academic Sports.” My first impression was that in Oklahoma competitions were only on the high school level. I was crushed. I called Grammi. She said, “Find what they do on the elementary level and participate.” That didn’t heal my broken heart. I was crushed. I asked about the National Honor Society, again not on the elementary level. Crushed again. I began to feel like I left so much behind me at Codwell. Called Grammi, she said, “Excel in your academics.” I felt like that was something I could do.

Moving forward, I found activities: Broadway Kids Musical and basketball. It was fun, but I longed for “Academic Sports.” I participated in a Spelling Bee. I won overall in my fourth grade class, but moving forward I was eliminated. It was fun and gave me something to work on. I’ll do better next time. Finally, a big event rolled around, “Academic Sports.” I participated in the County Curriculum Contest. I entered into Language Arts where I placed second. I’m happy. I finally found my comfort zone, “Academic Sports.”

I would like to encourage all students, regardless of age, to give your parents a reward for all that they do for you. Your parents will love “Good Conduct and Good Grades.”

To Preachers Kids: Just remember who we are. We are God’s children. When we are required to move God will walk us through. I am nine years old and this was my first transition. I learned that God always prepares the way and supplies our needs.

The Historic Pan African Pursuit of Dignity and the Vote: Vote to End Hunger

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. 1 Timothy 2:1-2 One hundred years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation that freed African peoples from the horror of chattel slavery in the United States, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King stated the following on August 28, 1963: “Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred. We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline… We cannot be satisfied as long as the Negro in Mississippi cannot vote and the Negro in New York believes he has nothing for which to vote.”

Dr. King echoed the words of St. Paul, the missionary, to his younger mentee, Timothy, in I Timothy 2:12. Like Timothy, Dr. King was a mentee of moral leadership during his time. People like Rev. Dr. Howard Thurman, a mystic and scholar, and the Rev. Dr. Benjamin Mays, the past president of Morehouse College and a global Christian leader, come to mind.

Ms. Ella Baker was also an important organizing and young adult strategist who worked with King.

Dr. King, St. Paul, and Timothy the Apostle cared deeply about the acts of supplications, prayers, and

intercessions for the people and those in leadership.

Each shared a vision of a peaceful, godly, and dignified life of the people shepherded by such leadership that would foster these spiritual virtues.

They took risks that illustrated their commitment to this. But perhaps it was their unjust imprisonments that most dramatically displayed this – or in the case of St. Paul and Dr. King, their martyrdom.

The history of African peoples inside and outside the United States bears witness to similar sacrifices made by African peoples to obtain their emancipated freedoms in 1863 and 1865 – religious liberty, citizenship, and the right to vote and run for elected office. Still, these gains are challenged by economic and racial structures, policies, and practices that fuel the disproportionate numbers of African peoples affected by hunger and poverty. The historic and present stubborn barriers of voter suppression, the assault of reduced voter protections, and the lack of voter rights after imprisonment disproportionately affect the voting rights of people of African descent in the U.S. persist. Even in a post-President Obama presidency season, there are no viable presidential candidates from racial-ethnic groups not of European descent.

How are we to end hunger and poverty without electing leaders who address these indignities?

Voting at every level, completing the census, and fair representation matter! Obituaries

Joining the Great Cloud

Cozette Agnew Campbell

Cozette Agnew Campbell, 100, passed away Thursday March 19, 2020 at her daughter's home in Baldwyn, Mississippi. She was born November 24, 1919 in Lee County unto the late Willie Agnew and Jessie Marshall Richardson. At an early age she joined Mt. Nebo CME Church where she remained a faithful member until her health failed. She held many positions: Sunday School Teacher, assistant church secretary, member of the Senior Choir, and member of the Missionary Society Card Ministry, a position she held from 1978 until very recently. She enjoyed working crossword puzzles, words searches, and watching game shows. She was also a member of the Heroines of Jericho.

After graduating from high school, she attended Mississippi Industrial College in Holly Springs, Mississippi, where she graduated in 1943 with a B.S. Degree in Education. She was an educator for 30-plus years, retiring in 1982 from the Baldwyn School District.

She was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Paul Campbell and to this union four children were born.

Cozette's memories will be cherished by children: Mary Inez Gamble, Brenda J. Tyes, Willie Floyd (Sandra) Campbell and Charles E. (Linda) Campbell; honorary children: Janice (Willie) Chandler, Willie Paul Craig, Jannie Brown, and Edward Brown; 10 grandchildren: Anthony Davis, Sherrodd (Darryl) Wilson, Chasisity (Kevin) Tate, Natasha (Lamar) Anderson, Rod Campbell, Shanta (Jonathan) McKinney, Bryant (Karrye) Tynes, Brad (Kayla) Campbell, Tarmarkis Turner and Whitney Chandler; a host of great-grandchildren; and niece, Matilda Easley. Visitation for immediate family only was held Wednesday, March 25, 2020. A funeral service was held Thursday, March 26, 2020, for immediate family only at Agnew & Sons Funeral Chapel in Baldwyn, Mississippi.

Senior Bishop and Mrs. Lawrence Reddick and the Eighth Episcopal District will host the Eighth Annual CME Unity Summit and the 150th Anniversary of the CME Church Celebration along with the General Connectional Board Meeting, scheduled August 31-September 4, 2020 at the Sheraton Dallas located at 400 Olive Street in Dallas, TX. The theme for this year's Unity Summit is, "Christian Methodism Beyond OneHundred Fifty Years: Trending Forward Propelled by the Great Commission."

The Unity Summit is scheduled for Monday, August 31, 2020 through Wednesday, September 2, 2020.

The General Connectional Board meeting is scheduled for Thursday, September 3, 2020 through Friday, September 4, 2020.
