The Abiding Comforter "And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever"

In this verse, we find words of comfort in a promise of Jesus to his disciples.

Those disciples had come to know and treasure a friendship and trust with Jesus that surpassed any they had ever known. He was reliable and holy in all his ways, truthful and truly compassionate. As the prophets had foretold, they had experienced the Emmanuel, God with them in all of life. The song that we sing, they lived: "What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear. What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer." Jesus, too, knew this closeness and cherished his friends, but he was going away. They would need comfort in his "absence," and as always he had and would provide. Jesus promised not just a comfort but the Comforter.

Many are the joys of life, but sometimes it seems the present sadness outweighs the more numerous joys.

It is in times such as these that humans require comfort and that temptations to find comfort in things that do not last become more powerful. Even in good times people often seek and find companionship in the fleeting things of life. The narcotic effects of alcohol and other drugs are offered not only as anti-depressants for the sad times but also as mood enhancers for the delightful times. The Bible often speaks of the increased merriment that the heathen enjoy in the times when their corn and wine increase. But when the wine runs out, anxiety sets in.

However, let me not stop with substances for we well know that comfort can be sought and found in other things, such as people and places and activity. Samson found comfort in his consorts with Delilah, David found comfort in his friendship with Jonathan, and we find comfort in such human relationships today.

Elijah found comfort in the cave, and many of us have our own "happy" places and retreats. Not long after the resurrection of Jesus, while the disciples were still in shock and dismay, they found themselves returning to what they knew, absorbing themselves in the comfort of work - fishing. Work can be a comfort in times of despair; busyness provides an escape from or an alternative to a discomforting reality. Yet all these things are temporary, not permanent or enduring comforts. People move, become unreliable, get a life apart from you, get sick, become absorbed in their own troubles, and even die. Places can get old and lose their effect and may even get disfigured or destroyed. Neighborhoods change. Even favorite activities, hobbies, can lose their thrill and fulfillment. What is permanent?

Jesus promised a comfort that could and would remain ... one not of human origin but of eternal origins.

Jesus promised the third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit, who would dwell within the heart and soul and affect the mind of human beings. When received, the eternal God would be the eternal Comforter, staying with human beings throughout their earthly lives and ushering them, us, into the eternal presence and bliss that is God our Father and Savior in heaven. Just as Jesus promised to never leave us or forsake us, so does the Holy Spirit. He not only reminds us of Emmanuel; He, like Jesus, is Emmanuel. And He empowers our spirits for the living of these days, these uncertain and sometimes mournful days. Though the earth be moved, though the crops fail, though father and mother forsake me, though Satan constantly seeks our destruction, be assured and rest in this fact. GOD NEVER FAILS. Collins Chapel Connectional Hospital Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and Grand Reopening In Partnership with Room In The Inn – Memphis, Homeless Ministry Submitted by Mrs. Juliet Waddell Pittman, Project Coordinator and Bishop Henry M. Williamson, Sr., Presiding Prelate of the First Episcopal District

Seven years in the making, and as the CME Church celebrates 150 years as a church, April 19, 2021, was the day that a dream became a reality. On this day the City of Memphis Mayor, James Strickland; the Shelby County Mayor, Lee Harris; the immediate past City Mayor, A. C. Wharton; the Director, Division of Housing and Community Development City of Memphis, Paul Young; and City Councilmen, Cheyenne Johnson and Jamita Swearengen, along with County Commission Chair, Eddie Jones, were at 409 Ayers Street to join Bishop Henry M. Williamson, Sr., Chairman, Board of Directors for Collins Chapel, and Rev. Lisa Anderson, Executive Director, Room In The Inn - Memphis, to celebrate the grand reopening and ribbon cutting ceremony! These persons along with about 100 others all came to celebrate the completion of the renovations and furnishing of Collins Chapel Connectional Hospital (CCCH) and Room In The Inn – Memphis, Homeless Ministry.

Continued from previous page services for an aging community and a changing environment. In the past year via communications between Mr. Paul Young, Bishop Henry Williamson, Sr., and Rev. Lisa Anderson, we discovered that Rev. Anderson was looking for a larger and more suitable location for the homeless population due to the COVID-19 crisis. The CME Church owned a facility (Collins Chapel Connectional Hospital) and wanted to provide care for those who had great needs. Room In The Inn wanted to provide a place for emergency shelter, day center programming, respite care and possibly supportive housing units. As 2020 progressed, Room In The Inn and Mrs. Cheyenne Johnson, the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church began to dream about how Memphis City Councilwoman these programs could continue to grow and how a building the Church owned could be repurposed for the good of the community. In response to the COVID-19 Pandemic crisis and the significant growth of our homeless population, the two were brought together and a partnership was formed with Collins Chapel Connectional Hospital and Room In The Inn - Memphis, Homeless Ministry. With the help of the City of Memphis, Shelby County, and the Community Redevelopment Association, that dream is becoming a reality.

Collins Chapel Connectional Hospital (CCCH) was founded in 1910, by the Collins Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. It was led by Dr. W. S. Martin (Surgeon), Eva Cartman Martin (Administrator), and B. B. Martin. It has historical roots that date back to 1905 when the hospital was located at 418 Ashland Court in Memphis, (l-r): Elder Peris Lester; Mr. Lee Harris, Shelby County Mayor; Mr. Tennessee. The hospital had surgical and maternity Jim Strickland, Mayor of the City of Memphis; Bishop Henry M. Williamson, Sr.; Attorney A.C. Wharton, Former Mayor of Memphis; wards. The Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) and Rev. Willie Ward, Jr., Pastor of Mt. Pisgah CME Church Church, led by its College of Bishops, built a brand new hospital in 1954 at 409 Ayers Avenue. The project was completed with the help of churches, organizations, government officials, and both black and white citizens of goodwill. Senior Bishop J. Arthur Hamlett spearheaded this effort with the leadership of the CME Connectional Church, which included the rest of the College of Bishops and General Officers, and with Laity, Pastors and Missionaries nationwide.

During the height of racial segregation, Collins Chapel was the only black-owned hospital where African Americans could receive healthcare in the Mid -South, which included Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi. It was also the only place where black doctors and nurses could practice medicine during the period of legal segregation.

Today there are approximately 2,000 individuals in the Memphis and Shelby County areas experiencing homelessness on any given day and night. Ninety-two percent of the homeless sleep in emergency shelters or transitional housing facilities. The remaining eight percent are found in places not meant for human habitation. The 6

goal of this partnership is to address the needs of those affected by COVID-19 and their families.

The facility is providing the following services and is in operation 24 hours a day, in three eight hour shifts with paid professional staff.

YOUR DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE & INVESTMENTS (DFI) GOES LOCAL Our local churches and congregants are ready and willing to embrace enhanced financial literacy. It is with commitment to this goal that the DFI embraces the challenge of extending such training to local church congregations. This training and education will include personal and church wealth.

The DFI launched financial education training by hosting monthly online meetings (entitled Conversations with DFI) that began in February.

Our first series considered the appropriate investment mentality of when, why, and what annual conference assessments are paid by the local church.

Our second and third series of conversations reviewed personal and church economics.

General Counsel, Atty. Kathryn Weathers Belger, thoroughly analyzed employee classification – 1099 vs. W-2. Mr. Sean LeDree, Investment Professional, joined us to answer questions on retirement planning and best practices.

During both our second and third series, Mrs. CheRhonda Greenlee, DFI Director, reviewed the status of the CAREs Act 2020 Payroll Protection Plan for new application for funds, as well as forgiveness of previous loans. Our early intervention in 2020 and 2021 helped CME entities generate more than $5,000,000 for payroll protection purposes in their local regions including $700,000 plus for the general CME Church.

Our fourth conversation (May 24 & 25th) includes the renown, respected, and erudite Chairman Emeritus of the 100 Black Men of America, Mr. Thomas W. Dortch of Atlanta, Georgia, who is helping increase investments from corporate America for early talent identification and hiring of African Americans. Additionally, Mr. Hilliard Terry, a former CFO & CEO in his own right, is to help us understand risk assessment and financial applications to the CME Church corporate structure.

We are excited to continue our engagement with local churches and have now made this a programmatic emphasis of the DFI. We believe it is an integral and imperative ministry to help identify the financial literacy building blocks needed to build, sustain, and transfer Personal & Church wealth. “From Where I Sit …”

What Covid has Wrought…

As the country begins to move out of the clutches of this historic Pandemic by the lifting of mask requirement for the fully vaccinated, it is most interesting to note what we have learned (or have been forced to learn) over these past 15 months. In this article, two examples will be referenced.

One example is how active congregations have been forced to diversify the method their services have previously been shared by replacing their inperson services with online virtual services and/or sermonic messages using ZOOM, Webinars, YouTube, and others. Some have opted to have outside services that accommodated the “sixfoot distancing” requirements. While others, unable to adjust as readily, have resorted to the older form of conference call-type messaging and expressions.

These newer online opportunities for messaging have also called for online giving such as Givelify, Cash App, PayPal, Zelle, etc., and surprisingly some congregations, Methodist, Baptist, and others have reported increased giving during these turbulent times.

As churches resume full in-person modes of worship, many will necessarily need to consider how to augment their previously traditional worship forms with the newer online virtual options if they are to continue reaching the masses in addition to funding their budgets.

The other example is the impact on meetings. Where meetings before were primarily measured by the number of persons in actual attendance, during this Covid period, meeting planners have placed a greater emphasis on the different modes of online virtual options to accomplish the same goal. As such, many meetings have experienced greater success utilizing these more modern forms of online virtual meeting modes. Using my upcoming annual conference for a possible example, attendees will have the advanced opportunity to register and pay fees online, contribute offerings and the conference tithe online, and subscribe to The Christian Index and the Missionary Messenger and pay the subscription fees online. Coupled with virtual meetings for all the sessions (except the election of delegates), conference attendees will save lodging fees and the Conference will have the opportunity for more persons to participate with the online option.

Numbers 23:23 ends with “… What has God wrought!” Perhaps as we examine these results of Covid-19, we may loosely paraphrase this passage by saying “What has God wrought for us through our experiences with Covid…” It seems clear to me that Covid has forced us into a newer, broader, and more dynamic form of worshipping in Word, Deed, and Gifts and that it will be more difficult, if not impossible, for us to succeed if we return to our older and more limited forms of worship modes. Or at least that’s the way it looks to me…

Getting Back to Basics as “We Envision Our Way Forward Taking Care of God’s Business” Church School as an Evangelism Vehicle that Drives our Spirituality When was the last time you attended Church school? Yes, I realize we are still in a pandemic, however, that should not stop us from attending Church School. For some, the thought of going to school can be rather alarming. However, for others, it can be a place to get refreshed and renewed. Hearing the Biblical stories come to life by a prepared teacher is exciting. A significant challenge for the church is the myth that Church School is for children. Well, that's not true Church School is for everyone, yes everyone Bishops, Clergy, and Laity. A title, position, and age are not deciding factors or prerequisites for attending or not attending Church School.

Although the pandemic has caused some challenges for the local church, the local church must not abandon the mission of God's church. The mission is not optional; we must be about the business of the Lord. The truth is Sunday School can be a great place to shape one's faith. Our faith will be awakened to the fullness of the God we are called and sent to represent as servants and followers of God’s word.

Biblical- Paul suggests, "Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved by God, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly explaining the word of truth" 2nd Timothy 2:15 (NRSV). The Bible is noticeably clear about the believer's role in the world. Matthew shares "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age."

Matthew 28:19-20 (NRSV) Study- Dr. Clifford Harris, General Secretary of Lay in the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, suggest: “Study to show oneself knowledgeable; be one who is continually growing in the understanding and the interpretation of God's Word. Study the Holy Bible and attend Bible Study and Sunday school.” We should study and learn to equip ourselves so that we can teach others. For, studying increases understanding; stimulates spiritual growth; builds and strengthens confidence, and helps to light the path on one's way to assist and equip others” https://thecmechurch.org/wpcontent/uploads/2019/lay/ROLE_LAITYINESSENTIALCHURCH-revised.pdf Faith Sharing- Church school is a small band of Bible believers who are intentional about learning and applying the word of God in their lives. Some churches may offer different classes (small groups) that can reach people. Without an evangelistic strategy for faith sharing, local mission work, and mobilization, Church School misses the mission of God. Church school allows the participants to share faith without fear. Here are the basic tenets of Church School: An evangelism/faith sharing: 1. Start a conversation 2. Pose a probing question 3. Ask permission and ask a direct question 4. Review/follow-up These tenets are present in many Church Schools and evangelism/faith-sharing settings in-person, the parking lot, drive-up, or Zoom are so important. The local church must be creative to present effective and efficient ways of leading all ages to engage in Church School and evangelism/faith sharing. Church School is a school you never graduate from.

Discipleship: The Mission of the Church Rev. Carmichael D. Crutchfield, D.Min., Ph.D. General Secretary of the Department

The mission statement of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church as cited from the webpage is as follows: The mission of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church is to be disciples of Jesus the Christ by serving individuals, communities and the world as the representative, loving presence of God and as witnesses to God’s salvation and grace.

John Wesley, known as the father of Methodism, saw the precise purpose of the church as reaching out to people with the gospel. The great commission found in Matthew 28:18-20 supports his argument. “Wesley was convinced that Methodists had been called by God to take the good news of salvation in Christ the length and breadth of the land, and that all other questions of order and doctrine were ultimately of secondary importance.”

This causes us to think of Christian Discipleship or learning and following as the weightier matter of the church.

This is important because it makes our discussions about offices and positions in the church secondary.

The now retired Senior Bishop Marshall Gilmore wrote in his book, Discipleship in Principle and Practice, “Discipleship is the life into which human beings are called by God in Christ.” He further argues that discipleship relates one to the “body of Christ,” that is, church as organism and church membership relates the same person to the visible institution, the church as organization.

In its simplest form, discipleship can be defined as people who are followers of Jesus Christ, and that following lays claims to every aspect of their lives. It is lived out in the context of community for none of us are in isolation. It propels us to love our neighbors, thus, developing our horizontal relationship with other human beings. The use of small groups facilitates learning about discipleship in a practical way as individuals come together in community. This allows individuals to attend to the immediate community, but to see the call to minister to the larger community.

Donald K. McKim says concerning discipleship, “A disciple is one who follows and learns from another as a pupil.” According to McKim, Old Testament prophets had disciples (Isaiah 8:16), as did John the Baptist and the Pharisees (Matthew 9:14; Mark 2:18). In our context, disciple is used specifically for those who follow Jesus Christ (Matthew 5:1; Luke 6:13; Acts 11:22).

Former General Secretary of the Department of Christian Education of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church and now deceased Bishop Ronald M. Cunningham states, “Discipleship involves making a decision to be a serious follower of Jesus Christ and turning to Him in prayer, confession, and commitment.” It is allowing His transforming power to use members of any congregation as Kingdom builders. By Kingdom builders, I mean being involved in the ministry to the needs of the community and/or our neighbors.

This includes showing acts of compassion and justice, such as, feeding the hungry and visiting the prisoners.

Bishop Cunningham helps us understand that discipleship involves being called by Jesus who wants persons who are trustworthy, teachable and task oriented. He further states that Jesus wants persons who are “faithful, available, accessible, accountable and teachable.”

For at least for well over a quarter of a century I have seen the CME Church start and stop emphasizing discipleship. In the early years of the then CME Convocation, the subject of discipleship was popular.

Then came a 20/20 vision and a Discipleship 2000 plan. Under my leadership we talk about 21st Century Discipleship.

However, the emphasis of discipleship seems to fade away in time. Some even think it is outdated. Some are asking for a definition. Some are saying it looks like something of old, therefore, we don’t want it.

I often ponder why is it so difficult for us to see that discipleship is the mission of the Church? Do you ever wonder why?

CREATING A SPIRIT OF RENEWAL AND BUILDING UNITY FOR ALL GENERATIONS: IT’S AN INSIDE JOB - Part I

Organizational renewal and building unity is an inside job . . . If true renewal is to take place within an organization, large or small, renewal must take place on the inside of individuals! In God’s church, I term this as spiritual renewal and commitment. . . If the desire and determination for renewal is manifested on the inside, it will show up on the outside. God changes us from the inside out. He starts with our hearts; thus, our actions, attitude, and behavior will reflect the change that He is bringing about in our hearts. . . To renew is to recapture the essence of an organization’s life and identity, while expressing that life in a way that is relevant to the needs of its members and today’s communities. The focus should not be that our organizations have been wrong all these years, and therefore need renewal, but that they must be revitalized, or renewed, to be right for the era in which we now live and serve.

Renewal includes shaping ministries and serving people in ways that are faithful to God, as well as fruitful in their results. . . This must be done in a way that builds unity, which should be defined by working together to solve problems, addressing challenges, and making improvements rather than engaging in competition that results in winners and losers. . . Ephesians 4: 1-6 says, “I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— one Lord, one faith, one baptism.” And Romans 14:19 reads, - “So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding.”

I, therefore, submit to us these five (5) elements that should be included in the quest for renewal and unity: (1) Value personal renewal as the route to organizational renewal. - We must commit to lifelong personal growth. – I believe that if we have life and are in our right mind, there is room to learn and to grow and assist our organizations and the church to be renewed and revitalized; (2) Value the individual and the organization at the same time. - How does one do this? I submit that we must respect all persons, regardless of their “status” and create a feeling and an atmosphere that communicates that the whole is made up by each individual and that everyone brings value to the table; (3) Simultaneously push for renewal while allowing self-learning to unfold and help create a culture of renewal for others and also invest in oneself. - While leaders must, I feel, have a spirit to teach, everyone must have a spirit to learn and that learning does not end with the close of the lesson. . . Growth and improvement are at their best when the learner continues to seek knowledge. It is by this same spirit that leaders continue to seek knowledge and invest in their own spiritual and physical well-being; (4) Make detailed plans while preparing for a time of uncertainty. - Being uncertain of the future should not give way to inactivity or complacency . . . Proverbs 19:21 tells us “Many are the plans that are in a man’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.” (5) See challenges as opportunities for creative resolutions. - This last element is offered not because it is easy to do, but because it is necessary for sanity and survival. Individuals and organizations must allow themselves to maintain a sense of right and fairness, while working to create what may be a non-traditional approach to solving the issue or challenge at hand.

THE FRAGRANCE OF GOD June is a seasonal summer month, bursting with flowers, and rejuvenation of an assortment of plants and trees. There’s something supernatural and vibrant about summer! It has always been my favorite season of the year! Flowers and plants produce not only vibrant colors, but sweet fragrances for our senses of sight, smell, and touch. The plants seem to burst with smiles and laughter, reflecting the creativity of our Heavenly Father as they begin to “wake up.” The display of their God-given characteristics appears as if they offer themselves to God, their creator. In an inexplicable cycle of life, God receives their offerings and encourages them to thrive in His presence to please Him. This dynamic of offering and receiving appears to exist on a spiritual level between God and man as we seek to please Him. As illustrated in Genesis 8:21, the fragrance of Noah’s burnt offerings of clean animals to God pleased God. Apparently, God delights in odors emanating from His creation. For example, Exodus 30:34 states, “and the Lord said to Moses, take unto thee sweet spices, stacte, and onycha, and galbanum; these sweet spices with pure frankincense: of each shall there be a like weight.” Moses was instructed to mix certain ingredients and present them to God as an offering.

While some may reject the odor of a burnt carcass, I perceive that the pleasing fragrance of Noah’s offering was manifested in His intentions. As per this scripture the Lord said, “I will not again curse the ground any more for man’s sake; for the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more everything living as I have done.”

As Christians, we may emit the fragrance of Christ in how we see, hear, and respond to our brothers and sisters in Christ. We may exude pleasant or unpleasant fragrances that attract or repel each other based on social and spiritual intentions. For example a smile or approving look may influence another’s response as would a sweet savory odor coming from Roses that please the senses and direct our thinking. In analyzing our daily spiritual walk, we should ask ourselves, “Am I emitting a Christ-like fragrance in engaging others whether they are Christians or not?” While we may sometimes fail in our efforts, we should strive to be like Jesus so that others can conclude that we are Christians by our fragrant conduct. There are times when we need to sniff our spiritual consciences to see if we are on track to being a fragrance of God. God has given us as believers His signature scent, the aroma of Christ, and it is His will that we will all smell DIVINE.

TEXAS COLLEGE TO HONOR ESSENCE CEO, ALUMNA AT SPRING COMMENCEMENT Submitted by Jake Martin Chief Marketing & Communications Officer

Texas College honored ESSENCE Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and 2005 Alumna, Caroline A. Wanga, at their Spring 2021 Commencement Exercise, to be hosted virtually on Saturday, May 15. Wanga, who will also serve as the occasion’s speaker, will be bestowed the honorary degree Doctor of Humane Letters.

The slated honorary doctorate will be Wanga’s second degree from Texas College, just 16 years after receiving her first in 2005, an earned baccalaureate degree in Business Administration. It was at this time that Wanga began her corporate journey as a Distribution Center Intern for Target Corporation in Tyler. While in the Supply Chain realm, she served in a variety of transformational leadership roles, including modernizing Supply Chain, Business Intelligence, Digital and Strategy capabilities. Wanga would climb the ranks within Target for the next 15 years, elevating herself to the “C-Suite.” Along with a cadre of other preceding impressive roles, Wanga would eventually serve as Target’s Chief Culture, Diversity and Inclusion Officer until 2020. Prior to that, she held several nonprofit roles.

During the Summer of 2020, Wanga departed Target to join Essence Ventures, parent company of ESSENCE, as Chief Growth Officer. Within that same month, she was named Interim CEO of ESSENCE, the number one media, technology and commerce company dedicated to Black women and communities. Then, just seven months later in February, Wanga was officially appointed to serve as ESSENCE’s CEO. Though she assumed the role of chief executive for ESSENCE, she maintains a dual role as Chief Growth Officer for Essence Ventures.

THE WESTERN REGION, NIGERIA CONFERENCE THE TENTH EPISCOPAL DISTRICT Submitted by Sister Aniefiok Johnny Ikott

It was great at the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, Ikot Ekpan, Nsit District, Western Region, Nigeria Conference, Tenth Episcopal District where we held our 11th Annual Conference. The Chief Host was the Creator of the universe while the Chairperson was the Prelate of the Tenth, Bishop (Prof.) Godwin Thompson Umoette. The Conference which lasted for 3 days – Friday 12th March 2021 to Sunday 14th March, 2021 – had delegates from the Ten Districts that make up the Western Region. Those ten districts are: (i) Ikot Akpan Ishiet District, (ii) Ikot Umiang Ede District, (iii) Oniong West District, (iv) Oniong East District, (v) Ekpene Ukpa District, (vi) Eket Okon District, (vii) Port Harcourt District, (viii) Iwo Etor District, (ix) Nsit District, and (x) Nung Ndem District.

The Conference was officially opened by the Prelate of the Tenth Bishop (Prof.) Godwin Thompson Umoette. The theme was Getting back to the basics as we envision our way forward taking care of God’s business.

Day 1 – As we always began with Devotional Service, the worship leader was Rev. Ndifreke Harry while the Preacher was Rev. Ubongabasi Etuk who preached on the topic: God will finish what He started in your life.

Text: 1 Thessalonians 5:24; other readings – Phil. 1:6; Zech. 4:6-10 and Jere. 29:11. The preacher said we should not fear the terror that surrounded us day and night but always be thankful in every situation. Further said that we should continue in good works praying ceasingly for faithful is He that calls us and will perfect His will in us.

After the devotional service, opening speech was made by the Chairperson – Bishop (Prof.) Godwin Thompson Umoette followed by the Conference Business till the day was exhausted. The Bishop highlighted the purpose of the Annual Conference being an opportunity to examine the growth of our Church. He also said that whatever office we hold in our Church is not a birthright, including the office of the bishop, but that it can be taken away from the person at anytime.

Day 2 – The worship leader for Devotional Service was Rev. Nkese Akpan while Rev. Ekong Eduok was the Preacher and the topic was Don’t Neglect the Business of God. Text: John 21:15 – 17; other readings – John 10:29, Ezek. 3:17, 2 Kgs. 6:26 – 32 and John 10:20. The preacher said we should value working for God just as 24

After devotion, the Conference business session began with reports from National Board of Evangelism. Five new churches were presented to the Conference for Admission into the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church namely: Awasa CMEC (Abia State), Upper Room CMEC (Bayelsa State), Eneka CMEC, Onne CMEC and Nonwa CMEC (Port Harcourt) all to the glory of God. All were admitted.

Ordination Service was conducted for Deacons Order only and the worship leader was Rev. Koko Daniel. Ordination sermon was provided by Rev. Eno James who spoke on the topic: Chosen for God’s Business. Text: Acts 6:3. Other readings – 1 Tim. 3:8 – 16 and John 15:16. She said as those chosen for God's business, we should not be doubletongued, greedy of dishonest gain, not given to much wine but be people of dignity. She added that those who are chosen and serve well as servants receive good standing and confidence in faith that is in Christ Jesus which is the greatest gain.

Eight persons were ordained. Namely: Pastor Daniel Jacobson Akpan, Pastor Ime Bellington, Pastor Ekanem Frank Ekanem, Pastor Samuel Elijah Samuel, Pastor Ubong Udo John, Pastor Richard Sunday Udoekong, Pastor Christiana D. Emmanuel, and Pastor Udosen David Silas.

Following the Ordination Service was the election of six delegates for the 2022 General Conference in the USA. The last day Sunday 14th March 2021 was Service of Communion and Commissioning. Sunday school topic was Be Contentment. Memory verse was 1 Timothy 6:6.

After the lecture, Divine Service was observed and the worship leader was Rev. Koko Daniel. The first and second bible reading was Genesis 38:1 – 18 and Matthew 7:1 – 4 respectively. The Preacher was Rev. Anietie Umoh who spoke on the topic: Let go of trick for it is not good. Trick means not being straight forward in dealings, dishonest, unfair, dishonorable, cheating, etc. She stressed that we should shun trick for it kills the church, and [we should] follow the steps of our Lord Jesus for that will edify the church thereby bring growth. Consecration of the Holy Communion was done immediately after the message by the Bishop of the Tenth.

The female student is Abigail Emmanuel Innocent from Nsit District. Her institution is University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. The male student is Ime Uwem Okon from Ekpene Ukpa District. Beginning To Move Toward God's Healing Submittd by Rev. Darvin A. When I talk about the CME Church in general and the Second Episcopal District in particular beginning to move toward God's healing, I am theologically affirming God as the One who heals the brokenhearted and the sick. Here the direct implication is that Jesus Christ heals. Because Jesus is God clothed in human flesh and the second person of the Triune God (God the Son), Jesus Christ has the power of God to heal those who believe.

God in Christ can also heal those who may not believe—according to the faith of someone else. Subsequently, Mark's main purpose for writing his gospel is to tell of the ministry of Jesus. He also writes to highlight the shortcomings and weaknesses of his disciples—even as they had spent a considerable amount of time with Jesus. Mark's gospel is more theological (in terms of his Christological reflection upon how Jesus shows himself as God) than the other three gospels (Matthew, Luke and John) in that Mark consistently portrays Jesus Christ as a hero of some sort; as one who has magical/spiritual/supernatural powers to heal, deliver, mend, restore and work miracles in the lives of normal human beings. Looking specifically at verse 31, Salvatorian scholar Silas Henderson notes that in Mark's gospel, the Greek word translated as “helped her up” is the same used later in Mark 16:6 by the angel at the tomb when he tells the women that Jesus “has been raised.” Henderson views this as Mark making a connection to the Resurrection, suggesting that a woman grievously ill has been restored to new life demonstrated by service to others.1 If the CME Church is to respond to the call of the moment and press her way forward into the healing hands of Jesus Christ, then we must take the theological language of Mark seriously.

Nevertheless, in order for the Church to move towards God's healing, we must first begin to move. The Church must make a concerted commitment to move: • •

These biblical/spiritual movements of the Church are critical to our responding to the Gospel of Mark because Mark focuses a good portion of his writing on what most would consider as miraculous acts of God. The word I use to describe the life-saving acts of God in Jesus Christ by the mighty power of the Holy Spirit is MINISTRY. 26

Put another way, the God in three persons model of ministry is what makes our healing, our miracles and our resurrections possible. Of course good CMEs are Trinitarians in the Spirit, but I agree with Bishop Thomas when he affirms that the CME Church is built for these uncertain times. In other words, the Church has the ability to respond to the crisis moment and successfully press the way forward. Taking a closer look at Mark 1:29-31, we see the ministry of Jesus in full effect.

1. v. 29 represents Jesus' Ministry Expectation—Preaching in the Synagogue with an expectation of God doing something supernatural.

2. v. 30 represents Jesus' Ministry Opportunity—After preaching in the Synagogue, Jesus visit the sick woman with a fever.

3. v. 31 represents Jesus' Ministry of Healing—Because Jesus healed and restoring the life of the sick woman, he will heal and restore the CME Church as well.

Even as I am giving a few reflections on the first three verses of the Markian text, my research reminded me on several occasions that Jesus did not just heal the woman with the fever, but he healed many. So much more happened in verses 32-39.

Upon his arrival from Cleveland in July 2019, Presiding Elder Kenneth Thomas reflected on one of his sermons by way of reminding me that the ministry of the Church is not our ministry. Rather the ministry of the Christian Church is Jesus' ministry. It's HIS ministry. It belongs to HIM. As pastors, preachers and spiritual leaders, it is our job to emulate, model, have faith in and follow the ministry of Christ as it is recorded in the Bible. As we continue to operate our local church ministries in what Bishop Marvin Frank Thomas Sr. has termed The Season of the Miraculous, let us understand that Jesus' healing of the mother of Peter's wife was a miracle of God. As we begin to move toward God's healing out of this COVID-19 pandemic, let us experience the miracles of God. Let those who are poor, sick, broken, confused, lost, scared and pessimistic be moved toward their healing. Let our churches, families, neighborhoods and communities be moved toward their healing. May we all participate in the Church's moving and the people's healing.

Pastor Charlie W. Coleman, II and the St. James CME Church (Millington, Tennessee) Commission on Membership and Evangelism in partnership with Pastor, Rev. Bassil Brooks and Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church (Cordova, Tennessee) have been very busy serving the Millington Community distributing food boxes.

We praise and give God the glory for distributing an estimated 558 boxes every two weeks from September through December, 2020. The boxes weighed 13,950 lbs. and had an estimated value of $16,740.00. During the first distribution an individual who saw us out front wanted to give her tithe to the church. During the second distribution, the Pastor took in a member. During another distribution, a white gentleman asked if we allowed white people to join our church.

Needless to say, we welcome him and his family with open arms when we open the church after this pandemic.

This project not only provided food for the community, we also were given the opportunity to: • become active and fellowship with one another, • build and improve relationships with other churches, and • be light during this time of darkness in (our community) and the world.

Matthew 5:13-16 reads, "Ye are the salt of the earth; but if the salt have lost its savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. 14 Ye are the light of the world. A city [(church)] that is set on a hill cannot be hid....16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."

SPRING HILL CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY PROGRAM AND 45TH ANNUAL CHOIR DAY PROGRAM Submitted by Mrs. Ethel S. Boyd, Recording Steward

On Sunday, February 28, 2021 at 10:30 a.m., members of the Spring Hill CME Church (Carrollton, Mississippi) and guests celebrated the church’s Black History Program and 45th Annual Choir Day Program, via teleconference. Brother Damon A. Williams (Youth) served as the Worship Leader.

The opening song was “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” followed by prayer by Brother Melvin L. Stansbury, Jr. and scripture by Sister Trena M. Williams. A song was led by Sister Makayla Miller (Young Adult). Sister Sydnei B. Williams (Youth) delivered a “Moment in Black History.” Our first lady, Sister Elaine Dyson presented the Children’s Message. Sister Ethel S. Boyd gave Announcements, followed by a song by Sister Lucinda Curry (Helm Chapel CME Church). Sister Sydnei Williams introduced the speaker, her father, Robert T. Williams, Jr.

Brother Williams focused on a question posed by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “What good is having the right to sit at a lunch counter if you can’t afford to buy a hamburger?” Brother Williams discussed the impact of economic inequality in the Black community. He discussed the limitless possibilities and the results of working together to cause positive change. Rev. Dr. William Dyson, Pastor, offered closing remarks.

The Spring Hill CME Church Family is grateful for the opportunity to worship our Heavenly Father in spite of the Covid-19 pandemic.

On March 11th Whoopi Goldberg announced on her Emmy-Winning daytime talk show, “The View,” that she had “Finally” gotten her 1st COVID-19 vaccine shot! She encouraged everyone, and especially blacks, to get theirs too when it is available to you. Whoopi praised the “kids” at the Javits Center in New York City, New York, for their dedication and hard work in helping to get this done. One of those kids is a CME! Connie Jackson, a member of Lesley Temple CME in Tuscumbia, Alabama, was a part of the group with whom Whoopi Goldberg posed for a photo after receiving her 1st shot!

Connie, a B.S.N. graduate of the University of North Alabama College of Nursing, who currently resides and usually works in Memphis, Tennessee, is on PRN status at her job as a Registered Nurse at LeBonheur Children’s Hospital and is working with The Traveling Nurse Association to send nurses to areas with a shortage of nurses due to COVID. [Since midJanuary 2021,] Connie’s assignment has been to New York City [...] and she is scheduled to work in New York until July. She is working at the famed Javits Convention Center while on assignment in New York. On Wednesday evening, March 10th, Whoopi Goldberg was one of the patients who arrived to take her vaccine. On “The View,” Ms. Goldberg expressed surprise that not only was it not as bad as she thought, she said, “I didn’t feel it.”

Connie remains a dedicated and committed member of Lesley Temple CME of the North Central Alabama Region, Fifth Episcopal District, Christian Methodist Episcopal District, and when she is not in New York, and not working, comes home to attend worship service at Lesley Temple.

To Forgive is Divine: A Journey of Reconciliation

Swaying from being numb to being excited was the state of my being until I finally saw Eva Cash, the woman who gave birth to me. Timidly, she approached my wife and me for dialogue. Timidly and awkwardly, she said, “Hello Jamie, I am sorry about how things happened. It was out of my control.

I did not know what to do neither did I know what to think. I immediately had a conversation with my wife about the next course of action to take. We decided to make the 16-hour drive from Tyler, Texas, to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, to be there for her. Stacey met up with us in Georgia and we all continued the journey to Myrtle Beach.

Upon our arrival, my mother was resting. Her friend, Gloria, decided to sit her up because she had been anticipating us. Stacey and I went to her room.

We were able to have a good discussion with her. At one point she asked us if she should continue with chemotherapy. I responded, “Only if you want to go through with it.” However, she said, “No.”

That afternoon, she took us to a seafood restaurant. We took the food back to her apartment where we had more time to converse about life while eating. This was a refreshing time for me. Because of the frailty of her sickness, we decided to stay another day. That made her happy; it gave her an opportunity to prepare breakfast for us the next morning. And we ate our mother’s breakfast for the first time after so many years!

At the conclusion of breakfast that morning, we were preparing to leave, and her persona changed.

I said a prayer and decided we should go to allow her to rest. I kissed her on her forehead saying, “I love you. I am praying for you.” She feebly said, “Thank you.”

Two weeks after arriving back to Tyler, we got the call that Eva Cash had transitioned. A plethora of emotions went through my mind. Immediately, we began making plans to attend the service. We had barely recovered from the 32-hour roundtrip journey we made to Myrtle Beach two weeks earlier, and here we were going again. The distance did not matter. I wanted to be there for the woman who brought me into this world, a woman with whom I had not spent quality time. With the support of my entire family, we loaded our Honda Pilot for the journey. We were running late and had to meet Stacey and the others in Little River, South Carolina. It was on a Memorial Day weekend, and the hotels had raised their prices.

That did not matter. Nothing was going to stop me 32

from being there with my mom for the last time. She was my family and nothing was more important than that.

I pinned these words all to say we must make amends with family members and others who have wronged us while we have time. There was a reason God brought them back into our lives. I could have been selfish and vindictive and turned down any chance of reconciliation. After all, our mother was the one who abandoned us and never looked back to see where we were and how we progressed in life. We, the children, were the victims, the innocent ones. Instead, I humbled myself and embraced the woman who gave birth to me. Though I have many unanswered questions, my calling as a minister of the gospel has given me the courage, faith, and strength to find the love within myself to forgive and move toward healing.

My spirit is at ease now. I know that as death was calling her, she was aware of my love for her regardless of what had transpired in life.

Too often, after someone has passed, people are left wishing things had gone a little differently in their relationships. Life is such a vapor, a candle in the wind, and we do not have time to be bound or held down by the chains of unforgiveness. To forgive is truly divine.

Men of God, do not give up! Yes, you have endured a lot just because you are a male. As long as you live in this world, you will continue to endure a lot. One thing you need to remember is that you are not alone.

If you know God and have a relationship with Him, then you know He (God) is with you.

Often, we hear the black male has two strikes against him. The first strike is because you are black, and the second strike is because you are male. Being a black male in America has its pitfalls. You are often criticized and racially profiled. You are racially profiled because of the color of your skin, the car you drive, and the list goes on. Every time you leave out of your front door you are worried if you will return. Why? Because of the increasing amount of police brutality against the black male. Be encouraged black men. You are not alone. God is with you. Remember, the troubles of this world will not last forever. Hold on, stay strong, dry your eyes, God is not finished with you yet.

Black males, whatever you do, keep moving forward. It gets tough sometimes, but you must continue to move forward. Your ancestors kept moving forward so you could be where you are today. Many of your Continued on next page June 2021 • The Christian Index

So, do not allow what your ancestors endured to be in vain. Keep pushing. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr said: “If you can’t fly, then run, if you can’t run, then walk, if you can’t walk, then crawl, but whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.” Men of Valor keep moving forward. You cannot stop now. Your sons and daughters are watching you. Your significant other is watching you. Your mother and father are watching you. The world is watching you. Continue to rise and move forward. Be courageous. As John F. Kennedy once said, “Do not pray for easy lives. Pray to be stronger men.”

THE 1921 TULSA RACE MASSACRE AND THE CME CHURCH BROWN CHAPEL CME (COLORED) and CHRIST TEMPLE CME (CHRISTIAN) CHURCH Submitted by Pastor Robert Givens

The long and tumultuous history of Christ Temple Christian Methodist Episcopal Church had its beginning in 1905. Several CME members who migrated to what was then known as the Indian Territory found no church home for their preferred denomination. There are no records available of the early Church, but it has been stated that an organizational meeting was held in a tent harbor on East Cameron Street. As far as we can ascertain, this was officially administered by a Bishop or a Presiding Elder. The name given the Church was BROWN CHAPEL COLORED METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH. The charter members were: Mesdames Elizabeth Cherry, Grace Rollerson, Mamie Hutcherson, Emma Adams, Winnie Blakely, Anna Carter, Elzanie Greer Grant, Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Ellis, Mr. A. W. Ross, and Mr. George Jasper. The first pastor was Reverend J. W. McGee. The location of Brown Chapel Colored Methodist Episcopal Church was in the BLACK WALL STREET AREA, 309 North Frankfort Place. After struggling some years with faith and hard work, a small frame building was finally erected. ON JUNE 1, 1921, not long after the Church was completed, it was destroyed by fire during The Tulsa Race Massacre. The cause of the fire was a racial conflict which resulted from a breakdown in human relations. With a group of courageous members, a second church project was undertaken. This was a difficult undertaking, because many of the members had to replace homes and other belongings.

The Church’s location remained the same. On June 26, 1925, it was completed and dedicated. In 1928, the name Brown Chapel Colored Methodist Episcopal Church was changed to Christ Temple Colored Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1954, the name colored was changed to Christian.

With the help and support of Attorney B. C. (Buck) Franklin paying out of his own private funds, the mortgage was paid in full in 1943. Attorney Franklin and his family were members of Christ Temple.

Attorney Franklin was the first Negro to sit on a District Court Bench in the State of Oklahoma. He practiced law in Tulsa, Oklahoma for over fifty years. In memory of Attorney B.C. and Mrs. Mollie Lee Franklin, a church library was established in their name.

After six years of planning, effort, and unfaltering trust in God, Christ Temple moved into the new church building at 2802 North Lewis Avenue. The dedication was held on January 22, 1967.

Christ Temple became a site for a freedom school in 1971 (1971-72 academic year), when Carver Junior High School was closed because of desegregation. In 2004, the Church allowed the use of our building for a private Christian Elementary School, SOLID FOUNDATION PREPARTORY ACADEMY, INC. In 2006, we began our partnership with ANDERSON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. Men ministering to each other and being a ministry to others The Men to Men (M2M) Ministry of the Monroe District knows how important it is for men to be visible in ministry outside of pastoring a church. That is why in March 2021, in honor of Women’s History Month, they decided to make a difference in the lives of women who have lived through the very worst of their partners.

The DART Program of Ruston, Louisiana, was the recipient of a month-long drive where a truckload worth of individual toiletries was collected from all over Louisiana.

As an auxiliary, the M2M really wanted to do something meaningful. So, the Monroe District Coordinator, Rev. Christopher Nelson began researching ideas and was very disheartened to find that from October 2019 to September 2020, DART sheltered 35 people (women and children). Additionally, the program provided the following services: counseling, support groups, legal advocacy, children’s services, and financial assistance for relocating more than 11 times the number of women sheltered ... 399 women. This does not even include the number of children who were assisted.

Thanks to the leadership of Rev. Christopher Nelson, the Monroe District M2M has decided to make this contribution an annual activity.

It is important to note that the entire Louisiana Region participated in this event, and the amount of supplies collected would have been drastically reduced if not for the cooperative efforts of the Minden District and Shreveport District led by Bro. Lee Jefferson and Rev. Samuel McKinsey, respectively.

Covid's impact on funerals, the bereaved and funeral worker to be examined Submitted by Euan Wemyss Communications Officer University of Aberdeen

The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on funerals is the subject of a new study by the University of Aberdeen.

The researchers will examine the experiences of bereaved family and friends, funeral directors and celebrants, and the new practices that have emerged as a result of the restrictions. This will inform careful consideration of how policy and practice should develop for the future.

Funeral provision in the UK was significantly disrupted when Covid-19 infection control policies were enforced.

The restrictions constrained how and by whom deceased people could be cared for; how funeral directors and celebrants could communicate with bereaved families; and possibilities for gathering for funerals, mourning and memorialising activities.

Death rites and ceremonies can be important forms of care and respect, both for people who have died and for their families and friends, so the disruption has caused much distress. However, the restrictions have also prompted the development of new funeral practices, some of which have been welcomed. For example, some people have found it easier to take part in activities online.

This interdisciplinary project will bring together insights from anthropology, archaeology, health services research, philosophy, social policy and theology to analyse the diverse experiences of disruption, distress, adaptation and innovation in funeral provision associated with Covid-19.

The team will interview bereaved families and funeral service providers of different faiths and those of none.

They will also analyse funeral artefacts, including online films, tribute pages, and written accounts.

This study is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, as part of UK Research and Innovation’s rapid response to Covid-19.

Study leader, Professor Vikki Entwistle Chair in Health Services Research and Philosophy at the University of Aberdeen, said: “Many of us have been bereaved, or know someone who has been bereaved, during the pandemic.

In some cases the restrictions have added stress and a sense of injustice to the experience of funerals.

“Funeral directors and celebrants, as well as bereaved families and friends, have experienced the disruption as challenging. Their work can be considered a form of care for people who have died, bereaved families, friends and communities –yet they have not been studied as professional groups to the same extent as those who are more typically considered part of health and social care services.

“By speaking to bereaved families and to funeral professionals, and by analysing how funerals have been conducted during the pandemic period, we hope to gather information on what matters most in funeral provision for different social and faith groups. This will help develop a better understanding of what makes a funeral ‘good’ and of the ethical implications of different policies and practices. This work will be valuable because, in contrast with considerable research into care provided towards the end of life, the practices and ethics of care after death are under-explored. We will use what we learn to help produce recommendations for future funeral care.”

Sister Mabel (Honey) Webster Stewart

On June 13, 1924, in Homer, Louisiana (LA), God blessed the union of John Webster and Susan Willie Bishop with the birth of a daughter, Mabel Elizabeth Webster.

She was united in marriage to Robert Louis Stewart Sr. To this union a son was born, Robert Louis Stewart Jr.

Reared in a Christian home, Mabel accepted Christ at the age of 6 and became a member of Lance Chapel CME in Homer, LA. She was also a member of Lane Chapel in Homer, LA. Mabel Stewart later moved her membership to Mt. Zion CME in 1966 where she served faithfully until her death.

Mrs. Stewart was a graduate of Homer Colored High School in May 1942. She attended four years at Grambling State University receiving a B.S. degree in Elementary Education. She was hired as a teacher in 1946 at Webster High School and later taught at Jones Elementary and Phillips Jr. High School. Mrs. Stewart retired in 1979 after 33 years of teaching.

Mrs. Stewart’s educational achievements consist of a B.S. in Elementary Education, Grambling State University (Grambling, LA) and a Masters of Education, Texas Southern University (Houston, Texas).

She completed additional studies at Tuskegee Institute (Tuskegee, Alabama), University of Southern California and Kent State University (Kent, Ohio.)

Serving as a faithful worker in her church, Mrs. Stewart worked in the Children’s Youth Department under the leadership of Mrs. Willie Mac Mayfield and Sunday School under Ms. Grace Landry. Mrs. Stewart served as Missionary President for Mt. Zion CME for over 25 years, and Secretary of the Louisiana Annual Conference Missionary Society for 24 years under the leadership of three presidents. She attended numerous general church meetings and served as Church Delegate on the local, district, regional, connectional and general levels. Mrs. Stewart served as the Stewardess President on the local and district level for many years. She also served as the Vice President of the Louisiana Region Stewardesses. Mrs. Stewart was a 52-year member of the Minden Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

Mrs. Mabel Stewart departed this life March 4, 2021. She leaves to cherish the legacy of her love and memory one son, Robert Louis Stewart Jr. (Minden, LA), two nephews, Bishop G.J. West II, (Mattie) Los Angeles, California and Jesse Brooks (Spring, Texas). She was preceded in death by her parents, John Webster and Susan Bishop' her husband, Robert Louis Stewart, Sr., brother, Jessie West and sister, Julia McDuffie. Mrs. Stewart leaves to cherish her memories many cousins, neighbors, relatives, friends; a lifelong friend, Mrs. Lula Bell Crawford; and a special daughter in-love, Ms. Shelia Avant.

The focus of this CPE program is on ministry in the congregation. Participants must have an approved place of ministry in order to complete the required hours in ministry each month of the program. The recommendation of a presiding bishop or supervising pastor is required as well. In addition to the ministry hours, attendance at all sessions is required.

There will be written assignments, readings and some internet-based assignments. The program operates under the auspices of the Academy for Public Theology of the Fifth Episcopal District of the CME Church. The faculty is comprised of certified CPE Supervisors and certified professional chaplains.

TUITION is $500, which includes $50 non-refundable application fee, a $100 deposit once accepted into the program and a balance of $350 payable before the program begins. The tuition includes the required books. There is currently no scholarship program, however a payment plan can be arranged.
