Editorial

The Great Commission We are presently on the precipice of the opening of the 39th Quadrennial Session and 40th General Conference of this our beloved Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. As we prepare to dive into the labyrinth of resolutions and deliberations, it is my prayer that we will do so with the words of the Great Commission in both the back and the forefront of our minds.

The words of this commission, found in Matthew 28:19-20 read as follows from the King James Version: "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.

Amen." These words have been called the marching orders of the church established by and for Jesus.

We are called to go. This gives the importance of missions and evangelism. We remember that we must not sit idly by and do nothing, merely waiting for Jesus to return or for our name to be called for the train bound for Glory. Nor are we to wait on sinners to come to where we are that they might learn the way of salvation. Rather, we are to go to them, and we have no choice or say in the matter, except perhaps for the "means" of going and the "techniques" of the teaching.

As a denomination, a church body of supposedly like-minded believers, we are to get on one accord to faithfully execute the command of Jesus our Lord.

We are called to teach, or instruct. This gives the importance of Christian education having faith and discipleship as its goals. Knowledge for the sake of knowing is not Christian education and does not

lend itself to salvation.

It does, however, tend to self-righteousness and a pomposity that alienates the Holy Spirit and gentleness of spirit that engender the grace of God in our lives and in the Rev. Dr. Ore L. Spragin, Jr., Editor lives of others through us.

Further, this teaching is not only to be didactic, but also practical. There are lessons to be taught in the schoolroom and there are lessons to be taught along life's journey. Both the book and experience are good teachers, but both need a guide to give the lessons their proper application. Jesus calls us to be teachers and guides.

We are called to cherish the past, what has come before. This gives the importance of our theological and ministerial history as a body of Christ in the world, dare I say it, through The Christian Index and other writings as we explore and expound on the teachings of Jesus. Jesus has already shown us what is important to observe, and it does not involve throwing away all that has come before us. We must honor and follow that which exalts the Son and glorifies the Father.

We may have to make some design changes in this vehicle we call the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, but it will still need to run on the grace and power of Almighty God. Its drivers and riders must be both sober-minded and drunk with the Holy Spirit, reasonable and open to the winds of change driven by the breath of God. May we not only fulfill the Great Commission, but may it also be fulfilled in us.

The College of Bishops Christian Methodist Episcopal Church June 13, 2022 Statement on Mass Shootings and Gun Violence Several weeks ago, many of us were perplexed and saddened at the news of the mass shooting which occurred at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York. Somehow as perplexed and saddened as we were, there was nothing to indicate that this mass shooting would become the first in a series of mass shootings to occur across this country in the following weeks. These mass shootings from Buffalo, to Uvalde, TX, to Philadelphia, PA, to Smithsburg, MD, to Chattanooga, TN, to Tulsa, OK and other places on the growing list of mass shootings have taken the lives of innocent people, injured many others, and devastated countless families and communities.

Our neighbors became victims as they were going about the routines of everyday life.

These places which should have been considered safe, such as a supermarket, elementary school, job sites, and places of worship, however for the victims and survivors, these sites were anything but safe. Recent mass shootings have taken the lives of people from diverse backgrounds, ethnicities, and ages. Whereas the ages and walks of life have been different for the victims, the common cry from their spilled blood is, when will this stop?

As we grieve with the families on both sides of these mass shootings, we too join the loud chorus of people calling for the end of gun violence. This will require more than token attempts at sensible gun reform. We can all agree now is the time for bold action to curb gun violence in this country. Marches and protests are good, and we applaud those who are leading these efforts across the nation. We are encouraged by the overwhelming number of protests and people taking to the streets of this nation demanding action to stop gun violence. But until systemic changes are made, we will continue to see people dying at the hands of persons with guns for evil reasons. Protection of 2nd Amendment rights is one thing but in the real world and for people of faith, it should not supplant the commandment which says, “You shall not murder (Exodus 20:13).”

We, like many of you, are encouraged by the efforts coming out of the Biden Administration, from Capitol Hill, as well as from some local and state governments across the nation. But until real change occurs, we should hear our call to action from the words of one the hymns of the church, “Hark the Voice of Jesus Calling”, ringing in our collective ears, “Let none hear you idly saying, “There is nothing I can do,” while the souls of {people} are dying, and the Master calls for you. Take the task he gives you gladly, let His work your pleasure be; answer quickly when He calleth, “Here am I, send me, send me!”

What is our call to action in response to these mass shootings and the problem of gun violence? We recommend the following steps that we all can take at every level of our Connection: 1.

Continue to pray for the victims’ families, the nation, as well as all parties involved.

2. Hold gun violence conversations in your sanctuary or on zoom with members of your congregation and community.

Participate, if you feel led to do so in peaceful gun violence rallies in your communities.

4. Contact your elected officials and express the need for urgent action from them leading to real change.

5. Begin now researching candidates for elected offices at every level in your voting precinct to find out their views on gun violence and make your voice heard through the ballot box.

Although we face challenging odds, we remain encouraged and hopeful that God will bring us through. Blessings!

The College of Bishops of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church:

ANNOUNCEMENT FUNERAL OF BISHOP GODWIN T. UMOETTE The funeral services and activities for Bishop Godwin Thompson Umoette, the 60th bishop of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, have been slated for the weekend of August 26-27-28, 2022. Friday, August 26th will be dedicated to family and other activities; Saturday, August 27th, will be a funeral and burial at Ikot Akpan Ishiet (near Eket, Nigeria); and a memorial service on Sunday, August 28th, 2022, at the All Saints’ CME Church, Ikot Akpan Ishiet.

Persons interested in flying from the United States to the funeral should plan to fly into Lagos, Nigeria, with intentions to fly farther from Lagos to Uyo, Nigeria. Further information will be given sometime in June 2022 or made public at the General Conference.

Bishop Umoette died February 26, 2022. U.S. persons who wish to send condolences to Mrs. Elizabeth Umoette can still do so by addressing her at: Mrs. Elizabeth Umoette, Tenth Episcopal District, P. “From Where I Sit …”

To My Successor …

By now the elections are over, the 2022 General Conference has ended, and you have begun your journey as General Secretary of the General Board of Personnel Services. CONGRATULATIONS AND BEST WISHES! As we transition our roles, yours coming in and mine going out, so much has changed since I first sat where you are now sitting. It may appear overwhelming at first, but I’m sure you will measure up to the task. Remember you have responsibility for two major areas, the Board of Personnel Services, and the oversight of the CME Retirement Plan. You will discover that structures are in place to not only guide your path but to also limit your boundaries as you help to safeguard the assets of both program areas. The guidance and the limitations were most helpful to the success of my 20 years of service and will likewise aid your tenure.

Due to staffing and budget limitations, your path may appear to be both solitary and lonely, but the joy of serving the ministers and ministries of the CME Church will far outweigh this lonely estate.

The nature of your work will require you to maintain the confidentiality of the information the participants of our Plans and their beneficiaries as their needs may require. As a result, you will find being consistent with your procedures and treating each person the same will help you to maintain a continual state of fairness to all. Learn the principles of operations and adhere to them faithfully and you will not find yourself choosing who to help more than others.

Should the multitude of additional functions upon which the church and the College of Bishops have generally depended upon this office to perform continue, you will find your management skills tested. However, the constancy and dependability of this office (as agent, custodian, consultant, etc.) has justified such reliance in these varied areas and I know that you will measure up to the task.

So now, as I have moved to the sidelines of active service in the connectional church and have joined the ranks of my fellow retired general officers, I leave in your hands what I have treasured for the past 20 years. I leave to you what was entrusted to me by the General Conference of 2002 and what has been delegated to this office, in one manner or another, for the last 104 years. Guard it jealously and protect it for the good of the Church and it will be in good hands. At least, that’s the way it looks to me…

Be Bold After the 2018 Quadrennial and General Conference, the church was challenged to Get Back to Basics. Many may not have understood the message, yet the Quadrennial theme seemed to resonate with the Church in many different ways. Once we understood the basic principles of Christianity such as prayer, Bible reading, meditation, authentic worship, radical hospitality, and love, just to name a few, we could embrace the clarion call which became relevant for many. What was the difference in how we heard the quadrennial theme and how we embraced it as we moved through the last four years? I would say we first heard the newness of the theme with our ears instead of our hearts. Now, we find ourselves with fresh marching orders. God has put leaders in place to move with purpose. After such an awe-inspiring 2018 General Conference, we are called to hear the events of that conference with our hearts.

Hearing with Your Heart If we hear with our ears only, we will miss so much. Although God gave us two ears, we must also listen with our hearts. Our ears hear a sound that is vibrated from our eardrum and translated through our brain and thoughts. However, the heart works in tandem with our intellect and understanding. It's easy to hear with our ears, but it may never reach our heart.

God speaks to our hearts, and we respond by faith. We have heard and experienced a lot over the last [four years]. But did we really hear with our hearts? Our collective boldness must be with our hearts.

It is An Inside Job Being bold is an inside job, a job not for those who are timid, afraid, pessimistic, or negative. Being bold takes on a certain percentage of risk and courage. We must be clear about what we want and how to achieve what is necessary to obtain the desired outcome. For instance, the local church needs bold pastors and laity if they are to see the church they wish to create. It will take doing things differently, thinking differently, and responding differently. The hymnwriter Lucie Eddie Campbell wrote these words, Something Within 1 Preachers and teachers would make their appeal, Fighting as soldiers on great battlefields.

When to their pleadings my poor heart did yield, All I can say, there is something within.

Refrain: Something within me that holdeth the reins, something within me that banishes pain. Something within me I cannot explain, all that I know is there is something within.

Moving with a Purpose!

Are you moving on purpose with a purpose to reach your desired purpose and potential for

your local church? If not, you may ask how to do so. Often people drift away from our congregations because our church is not bold and leading them to go deeper into a more meaningful relationship with Jesus Christ. Therefore, they are not anchored in God’s word, and reaching their purpose and potential becomes difficult.

Conclusion!

When people join in and become a part of your worship experience, whether via Zoom, Facebook Live, YouTube, Live Stream, Team Meeting, or Learning Management System, they should experience a meaningful relationship with Jesus Christ. So, be bold and lead your congregation and community into a life-changing experience through worship, testimony, music, technology, and prayer.

THE PRACTITIONER Dear Christian Educator and Formation Leader, Greetings!

Well, this is our Summer 2022 edition of the Practitioner. Wow! General Conference will be here and over in a few weeks. My written report was submitted for publication during the first two weeks of April. I am now working to complete the 10-minute oral report.

This is very challenging because much has happened in four years.

Four retreats, two face to face and two virtually; a virtual VBS; a Discipleship curriculum; a new VOLUME 1 * FALL 2018 * NUMBER 2 Discipleship curriculum as a Strategic Initiative of the CME Church; sixteen editions of the Practitioner; a virtual CYYAC21; virtual Children Church School lessons; virtual youth Church School lessons; Adult presentation of Church school every week beginning March 2020; a weekly virtual noonday Bible study; and a revision of a few resources, including Enlightened Males.

The Department of Christian Education and Formation continues to work toward the General Conference in a modality of change, but also focusing on the history of the church. The global pandemic continues to have an effect on our work, but we press forward. We continued to produce Advent and Lenten devotionals in conjunction with our sister Black Denominations. We continue to be engaged with the National Council of Churches by serving on the Committee of Uniform Series and the Christian Education, Faith Formation, and Leadership Convening Table. Additionally, we took on the responsibility of developing the curriculum for a planning grant from Lily Foundation.

I am extremely proud of the work of CYAM (Connectional Young Adult Ministry) and CYM (Connectional Youth Ministry). Mrs. Armisha Walker Harrison, the Executive Board of CYAM, led

by President Tiffanie Thompson and Rev. Cyreeta Collins and the Youth VPs are doing a phenomenal job of ministry. Check out the CYM youth hub that is helping youth develop a better understanding of the Bible. I keep before us that I want to see a youth explosion in the CME Church. It is my goal to increase our youth participation twofold in the next CYYAC in 2024.

Each third Tuesday at 7pm central time we continue to provide what we call “a pipeline to the local church.” We provide vital training. The May training was about Discipleship. (continued on next page) 6

THE PRACTITIONER Of course, we will continue with the Practitioner. We are soliciting writers and subscribers.

We are continuing to produce a video for Church school. We are continuing a Wednesday noon day Bible study. Rev. Dion Broughton, our webmaster, is helping us revitalize our website. More and more opportunities are being made to access live teachings that have been recorded.

Finally, I mention that the Liberty Bell CDF Freedom School is going on at Mother Liberty CME Church. The dates are June 13-July 22. I am happy to serve as pastor.

Finally, over the last four years I worked on two books. Formation of A People: Christian Education and the African American Church was released 2021. Pressing Forward: Faith, Culture and African American Youth was released May 22.

I am continually thankful for the editor of the Practitioner, Dr. Willa Ross. I am thankful to Ms. Ruth Greer for printing each quarter and Ms. Eartha Grimes for keeping the subscriptions moving forward.

Submit three current reference letters, (other than relatives or students) one of which must be from the applicant’s current pastor (if the applicant is related to the pastor, an active officer of the local church must write the letter).

Submit your high school transcript inclusive of the first semester grades (or first two (2) trimesters if applicable) for the 2021-2022 school year. Important Note: Applicants who are chosen as winners must submit a final certified transcript bearing the school’s official seal.

“OUR DAILY WALK” Greetings. I am Lady Andrea Couch. I am the District Representative for the 7th Episcopal District under the leadership of Bishop James B. Walker and Leading Lady Delois Woody Walker. I am married to Rev. Julian Couch, Pastor of Faucette Memorial CME Church in Durham, North Carolina, and I serve the church in several capacities which include Chair of the Women’s Ministry, Member of the Lay Committee and Sunday Church School Teacher.

Growing up in church many years ago, I often heard it said, "Come as you are." Many interpreted this phrase as referring to the clothing you were wearing to church. The belief was that if you did not wear a suit or fancy dress, you could not or should not attend church services. Even though the phrase, “Come as you are,” is not in the scriptures, we know that in a spiritual context it has nothing to do with clothes. “Come as you are” is Jesus’ invitation to sinners to come to Him with their sin, to come with their burdens, to come with their guilt, to come to find rest for their weary souls, and to come to be made whole. Scripture tells us that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23).

So, how do you come to Jesus Christ? The way to come to Christ is to repent and turn away from your sins (Proverbs 28:13, Acts 17:30, Romans 10:9-10).

Now that you are saved, God has decreed that you have full access to the Father as one of His children and you have found favor with God through Jesus Christ. Knowing this, how should we live to glorify God? Ephesians 4:30-32 says, “Don’t cause the Holy Spirit sorrow by the way you live. Remember, He is the one who marks you to be present on that day when salvation from sin will be complete. Stop being mean, bad-tempered, and angry.

Quarreling, harsh words, and dislike of others should have no place in your lives. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God has forgiven you because you belong to Christ.” Once you become a child of God and a disciple of Christ, you must allow the Holy Spirit to manifest in your life because you are an ambassador for Christ (2 Corinthians 5:20).

We must show our love for Christ in our daily walk and through our expression of love for one another. Let’s continue to strive to love our brothers and sisters as we love Christ.

Bruce Benson Greetings Saints of the Philadelphia District Lay Ministry: It is again my distinct pleasure to welcome all of our Pastors and Lay Leaders and members of the laity of our great Zion to another year of fruitful and spiritual engagement. We have weathered the pandemic, and although it is hardly over, many have had the pleasure of returning to their houses of worship. It is also nice to hear around the district that many ministries are still going strong. I want to take this time to thank the cabinet officers of the Philadelphia Lay Ministry and the Pastors who continue to support our service of laity.

Congratulations to the officers for serving another year in your respective offices to carry out the goals and objectives of our ministry. We thank Rev. Patricia DeGrafenreid, our illustrious Presiding Elder, for her leadership and support of our ministry.

The district conference of the Philadelphia District, begins a new year of studying, seeking, sharing and serving the needs of our churches and communities. Therefore, we trust that God will continue to bless and lead our ministry in the right direction to bring souls to Christ that seek salvation.

Although we were not able to host an inperson awards luncheon this year, we are so happy to announce that the Lay Ministry was able to recognize laity and clergy of the churches of our district who labor in the field to make others' lives a little better. Let us take a moment to congratulate Sis. Tiara Lynn Henderson as the youth awardee. It is always a pleasure to honor and recognize our youth who serve in the church and the community.

It is also a pleasure to announce the Philadelphia District Lay Person of the Year – The Rev. Johnathan A. Dickey of St. John CME Church, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (PA). Rev. Dickey is the husband of Rev. Dr. Queen Dickey, Pastor of St. John CME Church and the Statistician for the New York-Washington Region. Rev. Dickey so deserves this honor from our district for his unselfish service, always willing to assist and a downright good person.

The Philadelphia District Lay Ministry honors itself with the recognition of Rev. Johnathan A. Dickey as the district awardee for this year.

In April of 2000, Rev. Dickey accepted his call to the ministry at St. Paul Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Limeton, Virginia, under the leadership of his pastor and wife, Rev. Queen Dickey.

In July 2003, Rev. Dickey was ordained Deacon during the 135th session of the New York-Washington Annual Conference. In July 2006, Rev. Dickey was ordained Elder during the 138th session of the New York-Washington Annual Conference. In August 2015, Rev. Dickey was admitted into Full Connection during the 147th session of the New York-Washington Annual Conference. He graduated with high honors from Prince George’s Community College, Largo, Maryland, in 1999 with an Associate of Applied Science in Criminal Justice. In July 2008, Rev. Dickey was appointed assistant pastor of St. John Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Harrisburg, PA. Rev. Dickey is the husband (35 Years) of Rev. Dr. Queen A. Dickey. Patricia DeGrafenreid, Presiding Elder of the Philadelphia District opened the conference with a meditation preached

Marshall Jenifer, Pastor of Phillips Metropolitan CME Church, Newark, New Jersey (NJ), led us in prayer followed by the scripture reading by Rev. Stephen Thomas, Pastor of St. Paul CME Church, Egg Harbor, NJ. Rev. Irons preached on the subject, “If we don’t bend, we are surely doomed to break.”

After the service, Dr. Judith Grant, president Emeritus, Women's Missionary Council, shared useful General Conference information for delegates and visitors. Our church will elect four (4) new Bishops during this General Conference. Each ministry of the district gave a report of their work. District leaders include Sis. Paulette O’Neill, President of the Missionary Society; Sis. Karen Irons, President of the Ministers Spouses; Bro. Bruce Benson, District Lay Leader; Sis. Carol Henderson, Interim Director of the Board of Christian Education and Formation; Bro. Anthony Smoaks, Ministry to Men, who is also a candidate for the General Secretary of the Ministry to Men Department; and Bro. Michael Dixon, Chairman of the Board of Evangelism.

A special guest, Rev. Courtney Adams, Pastor of Israel Metropolitan CME Church, Greenville, South Carolina, shared a professional development session, “Growing the local church through digital technology.”

Scripture reference was Psalms 90:1, 2, 12, and 17a. This session was highly informative, useful and important to the continued growth of our churches through technology. Technology is not the future of the church, but the church NOW. Rev. John Dillard, Rev. Aaron Donnelly, and Sis. Lisa Jenifer Robinson presented a fund-raising idea in which all churches in the district can participate and benefit. Popcorn sales are popular fund-raisers and very profitable. The district decided to go with the project and our start date is April 29th.

The District Missionaries held their election with the following officers elected: President – Sis. Paulette O’Neill; Vice President – Sis. Theresa Bell; Secretary – Sis. Judith Grant; Treasurer – Sis. Janice Watson; and Parliamentarian – Sis. G. Bernice Richarson. Other officers elected were Division Leaders and Departmental Secretaries.

The conference ended on a high note and enthusiasm prevailed throughout the conference. Members were delighted with the presentations and the online fellowship. It was a feeling that what we learned on this day, we can go back to our churches and communities and use to make us better Christians and community leaders. Rev. David Wynn, Pastor of Pauline B. Grant CME Church, Pemberton, NJ, closed the conference in prayer.

Trinity CME Church Celebrates One Hundred Fifty years: A Beacon of Hope in the Lafayette Community Submitted by Linda F. Granger – Dept. of Evangelism Trinity CME Church – Lafayette, Louisiana Elder Maggie C. Banks, Pastor

Trinity Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, the oldest African American church in Lafayette, Louisiana (LA), celebrated its 150-year anniversary on Sunday April 24, 2022. The church built next to the original church site of 1872, “has been a beacon of light in the community through its many outreach programs – in music, downtown ministerial alliances, homeless and senior citizens ministries and help to the poor.” The church continues to “Walk by Faith, and Not by Sight.”

Trinity Colored Methodist Episcopal Church began when freed Black people began worshipping throughout the town of Vermilionville (now Lafayette, LA). Thus, on May 3, 1872, Gov. Alexandre Mouton, donated a plot Trinity Colored Methodist Episcopal Church of ground known as Lot #235 on the old corporation of 315 Polk Street Vermilionville to the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church in America. The church was re-built in 1954 and found at its current site on 604 Lee Avenue. In 1956, the word “Colored” was officially changed [by the denomination] to “Christian” and Trinity became “Trinity Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.” For 150 years, the members of Trinity have continued to hold to the mission of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church by being “disciples of Jesus the Christ, by serving individuals, communities and the world as the representative, loving presence of God, and as witnesses to God’s salvation and grace.” Our celebration theme was based on Philippians 1:3, “I Thank God for Trinity Christian Methodist Episcopal Church: Taking a Look in Two Directions.” Bro. Kevin Green was our Praise and Worship Service Leader, and Sis. Mathilda Martin led the Mass Choir with musical selections that lifted Trinity Colored Methodist Episcopal Church our souls 604 Lee Avenue with songs of recognition of God’s faithfulness.

Our anniversary celebration was led by our Master and Mistress of Ceremonies, Dr. Ernest and Mrs. Barbara Kinchen. Sis. Tracey Weathersby delivered a rousing Welcome followed by a heartfelt Response from Cottrell Chapel CME Church.

Submissions Continued from previous page In highlighting our 150-year celebration, the Trustees of the Church created and adopted a Church Resolution. Sis. Linda Granger read the Resolution as part of the anniversary celebration. The Resolution emphasized the church’s history, its struggles, and challenges, stretching back to 1872. For 150 years, each generation of the membership has been a bold witness and all look back on how God has sustained this great church. And although, our history has not been without trials and tribulations, our faith and hope in God’s promises does not disappoint. As we “take a look in two directions,” we transfer this faith and hope from the hearts of one generation to the hearts of future generations.

Ms. Braleigh Gee, responding for our future generation, acknowledged that the youth of the church not only represent the future leaders, but are part of the church right now. She said, “a church without youth is a church without a future.” We, the youth of the church, look to the church leaders as role models to teach us as Jesus taught His disciples. As we, the youth of the church, mature in our faith, we must step up to be the Christian leaders we are called to be, so that what we learned in our youth can be passed on to the generations that follow.

As the celebration continued, Mayor-President Josh Guillory of Lafayette, LA, prepared a Mayoral Proclamation, affixed with the official seal of the City of Lafayette, to honor and Elder Maggie C. Banks receives plaque from celebrate the 150th Anniversary Councilman Glenn Lazzard. of Trinity CME Church. Kathalee Cooksey read the Proclamation and presented it to Elder Maggie Banks. In addition to the Mayoral Proclamation, Councilman Glenn Lazard being the Lafayette City Council District 5, presented Elder Maggie C. Banks with a glass plaque documenting this historical occasion of 150-years of service to the Lafayette Community.

Pastor Banks introduced our guest speaker, Rev. Christopher M. Nelson, Pastor of Cottrell Chapel CME Church, New Iberia, LA. Members of Cottrell Guest speaker, Rev. Christopher Chapel CME Church, along with their musician and choir, accompanied Rev. Nelson. Pastor Nelson’s message was taken from Psalm 127:1, “Except the Lord M. And no church will be unified, now or in the future, unless the Lord is the one who establishes it.” Rev. Nelson reminded us that, “no matter what we do or where we are, God is the one who makes things come to pass and God is looking for some people He can count on.” Rev. Nelson asked the congregation this question, “Can God count on you?”

Our anniversary celebration continued with song and dance as we worshipped in spirit and truth. Sis. Theresa Singleton, Committee Chair expressed appreciation and thankfulness to everyone taking part in making this historical celebration a success. Everyone was invited to share in the refreshments being served in the Fellowship Hall.

We end this 150-years celebration with excitement, saturated with thanksgiving and overflowing with the joy of the Holy Spirit. We reflect on our theme, ”I thank God for Trinity CME Church: Taking a Look in Two Directions.” We are not only looking backward but also looking forward, letting the past be an encouragement that God will always be faithful. And we remember what makes this church unique is not the buildings, but the members and the common story each one shares. We thank God for the fellowship, the faith, and love each member brought through these church doors stretching back to 1872. As we receive the benefit of them, and God receives glory by them, we pass these benefits on to the next generations that follow. As we continue to add to our story, we share our own lives in love and service. May God’s blessings be present with us for another 150 years.

-- Anonymous It was indeed a spirit-filled weekend for the youths of the Christian Methodist Episcopal church, 10th Episcopal District, when the leadership of National Young Adult council held her 2022 National Young Adult Revival designed to equipped youths to face the challenges of the moment, promote and expand the kingdom of God, and to serve as witnesses to God’s salvation and grace.

Western Region, Nigeria (ONNA LGA, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria) with the theme "Be an instrument of honour to God's Glory," II Timothy 2:18-21.

The program had in attendance Young Adult Council delegates and leaders from the thirty-three districts of the seven regions of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Nigeria under the Episcopal leadership of Snr. Bishop Lawrence Reddick III, the supervising bishop of the 10th Episcopal District and the senior bishop of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church; the Regional Administrative Coordinator of Lagos Region, Rev. Michael Udo; the Administrative Coordinator of Southern Region, Rev. Nse Udouko; the Administrative Coordinator of Western Region, Rev. Victor Ekott; Rev. Koko Daniel, the Administrative Assistant to the bishop; Rev. Victoria Nkantion, Ikot Abasi, Central District Presiding Elder; and the Presiding Elder of Oniong West District, Rev. Abraham Umoh as the host Presiding Elder. Rev. Nnamso Ekanem was the host pastor, among others.

Among the features of the program were moments of worship celebration, prayer sessions, evangelical outreach and powerful messages from great men of God, including Rev. Samuel Samuel, Rev. U. Henry, and Rev. (Dr.) Victor H. Ekott, among others.

The program also featured practical training and lecture sessions delivered by seasoned professional

Submissions members of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in different areas, to include: a paper presentation by Dr. Ekereobong Ufot, a medical doctor, titled, "Healthy members makes a healthy Church."

He explored the need for members of the Church to stay healthy, maintain personal hygiene, and emphasized that a healthy church exists for Christ and His honour, and therefore places God's word at the centre, seeking to live under it.

The Rector of NICE Polytechnic and the 4th National YAC President, Mr. Itohowo Umana, also presented a paper titled, "Effective peace and conflict resolution promote the Church," aiming at promoting unity and togetherness in the body of Christ.

In a separate paper presentation, Mr. Innocent Archibong, a seasoned entrepreneur and the chairman, National Young Adult Council, and Director of Entrepreneurial and Economic Development, presented a paper titled, "Individual development develops the Church," and explored the need for personal development in order to develop the Church.

Also presenting was the President Eastern Regional Young Adult Council/National Young Adult Council Director of Media, Mr. Abraham Abraham Aniefiok, on, "The Impact and Opportunities in Digital Economy." He presented enormous business opportunities for emerging youths in the 21st century.

The program was organized and coordinated by the leadership of National Young Adult council headed by Bro. Uduak Nathaniel Nkantion as the President; Bro. Mkpoisonke Ibok, the host regional YAC President; and Bro. Albert Uko, the National YAC Organizing Secretary was the chairman of the Central Planning Committee.

Prayers were offered for the [general] Church, the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, the leadership of the 10th Episcopal District, the family of Bishop Prof Godwin Thompson Umoette, and the nation of Nigeria!

On March 31, 2022 at 4:30 p.m., the Williams Memorial CME Temple church family celebrated another milestone in the undaunted legacy of this historic house of worship. Having been displaced from the historic worship facility located at 1501 Peabody for over six (6) years, The Temple purchased a new multiplex worship facility with space for worship, children & youth ministries, community outreach and much, much more.

Present at the signing were Rev. Dr. Debra T. Coleman, Pastor; Associate Bishop Othal H. Lakey, who pastored The Temple for three (3) years; Presiding Elder Rev. Larry D. Anders, who pastored The Temple for 29 years; Trenton Reed, Trustee Chairperson; Nathanial Davis, Assistant Trustee Chairperson; Annetta Garner, Steward Ministry; and 1st Gentleman Alvin Coleman.

The congregation met at the new church, located at 3301 St. Matthias Drive in Shreveport, Louisiana (LA), immediately following the signing for a “praise party” in the sanctuary. The Grand Opening of “The Temple,” located at 3301 St. Matthias Drive, Shreveport, LA, was held Saturday, May 21, 2022 at 12:00 Noon.

After several years of waiting, watching and praying, the Pastor, Rev. Dr. Debra T. Coleman, the Trustees, the Stewards and the members of Williams Memorial CME Temple have been blessed with a spacious facility that not only allows them to continue their historic heritage and legacy of proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ and serving the community, but also provides unlimited opportunities for ministries beyond measure.

The Ribbon Cutting ceremony began promptly, followed by the official Relocation and Consecration Service. Associate Bishop Lakey was the guest speaker for the Service.

The pastor and members of The Temple have been busy making repairs and updates to the facility and surrounding grounds in eager anticipation of the opportunity to share their blessing with fellow believers throughout the community and across the connection. Presiding Elders, Pastors, Annual Conference and District Officers and CMEs both far and near gathered for this once in a lifetime celebration.

Impressions from Nigeria Rev. Milton A. Proctor, Sr. Presiding Elder, Beaumont-Nacogdoches District Eighth Episcopal District

On May 24, 2022 I was able to travel with Senior Bishop Lawrence L. Reddick to Lagos and Uyo, Nigeria, for mission work. I wasn’t sure until the last minute that I would be able to go, but the Lord opened up the ability for me, and my wife, to go. This trip was enriching, rewarding, and beautiful as well, as we visited some of the areas in the continent of Africa. I was pleasantly surprised while eating dinner at the hotel to be introduced to Pastor Umo Bassey Eno, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for Governor of Akwa Ibom State and owner of the hotel that we stayed in. I encourage you, if the opportunity ever presents itself to go on such a trip, that it would be worth the sacrifice you have to make to go.

Below is a picture at our Bible college in Ikot Ekpene, the Breeding-Montgomery Bible College.

Through the gifts, grace and blessing of the people of the churches in the United States, our Senior Bishop was able to deliver the remaining budgeted allocated monies requested by the late Bishop Godwin T. Umoette to the Bible college. With these monies, he was able to pay the salaries of the teachers, as well as staff members. The overwhelming smiles of appreciation seemed to give them a sense of hope that things are going to get better.

After a successful meeting of Board members present, in which priorities for the school were named, the Bishop left. Students who had gathered in the beginning and welcomed the Bishop and the Board members, also gathered around the Bishop to greet him as he was leaving. It was like Christmas in the summer as he learned that Bishop Umoette never ended a visit without giving them enough money so that they could eat a decent, good meal, and Bishop Reddick followed his example by doing the same. Look at the expression of joy on their faces caused by just a few dollars that we don’t think anything about.

Please think about these students the next time an offering is taken up for mission work in Africa. Our few dollars go further than you can imagine in the hands of those who don’t have any. Bishop Reddick took personal pride and ownership in making sure the dollars donated for all causes were distributed specifically as intended.

Submissions The next day we met with more than thirty Presiding Elders, a few of whom had come from as far away as Lagos and Kano (both over 8 hours by vehicle) just to get there as they greeted the Bishop with great joy and expressed their concerns leading into the General Conference. What was amazing to me was their mode of transportation getting there. When I looked at the parking lot, there were very few cars and a handful of motor scooters, but mainly they walked if they didn’t get a ride. However, their joy was in getting to greet the Bishop personally; so, they came from far and near to meet him.

On our last day we went to worship service at the Bishop Marshall Gilmore Cathedral CME Church in Uyo, which is one of our largest churches in that area. What a time we had as the preacher preached and the choir sang, and, oh the expression of worship as they danced in joy to give their offerings to God! Their concern for worship was very clear that they were there to praise God and not to be comforted by padded chairs and air conditioning. And as the spirit got higher, I can say that the unpadded chairs and lack of air conditioning failed to be a hindrance in this worship experience.

I am grateful for this unique and powerful week to be among my brothers and sisters of Nigeria. As we strive to do better, we can learn from them as they show love, dedication, sharing, commitment, faith and perseverance.

To God be the Glory for what I was able to experience to change my perception of what we ought to be about! Can we walk by faith and not by sight?

Ecumenical News Prayer for Nigeria Posted June 8, 2022

The NCC joins the Nigerian Baptist Convention for prayers after the massacre at a Catholic church in Nigeria.

The Nigerian Baptist Convention is a long-time member of the Committee on the Uniform Lessons Series (CUS) and they have alerted us to this attack as well as to others on Christians in the past few weeks. A representative has told us, “It is tough being a Christian in Nigeria today. We leave home in the morning not having hope of coming back home.”

Rev. Dr. Tammy Wiens, NCC Director of Christian Education and Faith Formation and who also directs the work of CUS, reflected on the tragic news, saying, “I am blessed by a deep friendship with colleagues from the Nigerian Baptist Convention through our shared work in developing the CUS outlines used to develop Sunday School curriculum both in the US and abroad. Hearing that our brothers and sisters in Christ are victims of kidnappings, vandalism, and murder is even more heart-wrenching when you have a personal relationship with those who report living under a constant threat of violence. Our hearts are heavy with grief upon receiving word of this attack, and the call for prayer out of Nigeria is yet another reminder of the suffering that many in this world endure. Our hearts unite in prayer and wrap around our neighbors near and far.”

We will continue to monitor with alarm the growing, lethal violence against Christians in Nigeria. Credible sources are beginning to characterize the violence as genocide including Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), the Jubilee Campaign for Religious Freedom, Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW), International Christian Concern (ICC) and the Lift Up Now grassroots foundation led by Southern Baptist Nigeria native Adeniyi Ojutiku.

Bishop Mildred Hines

"Christ's Passion Through a Pioneer" Bishop Mildred “Bonnie” Hines, the 98th Bishop in succession of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church died Monday, May 23, 2022 in Los Angeles, California. Elected and consecrated in Atlanta, Georgia at the denomination’s 48th General Conference in 2008, Hines is the first and only woman elected to the church’s highest office in it’s over 225-year history which dates back to 1796.

The Communications Office of the A.M. E. Zion Church released an official statement Tuesday, from The Board of Bishops- “We are glad because she is free from her infirmities and is in the presence of her Lord; whom she served so faithfully.”

These sentiments were expressed by Board of Bishops President, Bishop Darryl B. Starnes, Sr., Presiding Prelate of the Piedmont Episcopal District.

A native of Mount Airy, North Carolina Bishop Hines served in every capacity with diligence and excellence.

Bishop Hines was formally educated in the public county schools in Surry County, North Carolina. She always credited Miss Virginia Galloway, her first-grade teacher, for instilling in her a thirst for learning and a passion for speaking. Her favorite subjects were English, chemistry, history, and home economics at North Surry High School. After receiving an academic and athletic scholarship, Bishop Hines attended Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, North Carolina, where she received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Home Economics Education.

She received her Master of Arts in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She was awarded a Master of Divinity from the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia, and certification in Clinical Pastoral Counseling from the Colgate Rochester School of Divinity in Rochester, New York. She was awarded a Doctor of Ministry from the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia. Rev. Dr. Anthony Witherspoon, President of the International Ministers and Lay Association remembered Bishop Hines- “Zion has lost a giant who is leaving an indelible legacy that changed the trajectory of our church denomination. Not only was Bishop Hines a staunch supporter of The International Ministers and Lay Association, but she also championed all we stand for even in the face of opposition. Bishop had no problem standing alone for the good of others if need be. Our association has been made all the better because of her courage, strength and tenacity. Servant, well done.”

Once a buyer for Belk Department Stores, she said an illness forced her to leave the fashion world behind. “I bargained with God,” she said, saying she would follow divine guidance if she survived. Bishop Hines pastored First A.M.E. Zion Church in Los Angeles, California, prior to her election to the episcopacy. Previous Pastoral assignments include: Walls Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church, Charlotte, NC, Saint Peter's Tabernacle A.M.E. Zion Church, Gastonia, NC, and Waddell Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church, Shelby, NC. Rev. Dr. Darius Benton, Presiding Elder of the Dallas-Fort Worth District and spiritual son to Bishop Hines commented, “She truly exemplified what it was to have a pastor’s heart; she made a point to call me every Sunday the entire time I was pursuing my undergraduate studies.

Ecumenical News Hines served as Bishop of the Western West Africa Episcopal District and later was assigned to serve the Southwestern Delta Episcopal District which includes churches in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Texas and Tennessee. After the sudden death of Bishop Roy Holmes in May of 2013, the New England and the Bahamas Islands Conferences of the North Eastern Episcopal District were added to her supervision.

Most recently, she served the South Atlantic Episcopal District which includes churches in South Carolina and Georgia. “She was a first-class lady who was very meticulous in her leadership and always strived for excellence. It was my honor to serve by her side these past few years as what she called her ‘Assisting Bishop’.”, said Retired Bishop Warren Matthew Brown, Resident Bishop in the Georgia Conference. Hines was also the chairperson of the board of trustees of Clinton College in Rock Hill, South Carolina and a member of the Board of Trustees of Livingstone College in Salisbury, North Carolina. Bishop Hines is fondly remembered by colleagues and constituents alike for her style, intellect, wisdom, and grace.

Lilly Endowment’s Clergy Renewal Programs are administered by the Center for Pastoral Excellence at Christian Theological Seminary.

Through its religion grantmaking, Lilly Endowment, an Indianapolis-based, private philanthropic foundation, seeks to deepen and enrich the lives of American Christians. It does this largely through initiatives to enhance and sustain the quality of ministry in American congregations and parishes.

To this end, National and Indiana Clergy Renewal Programs provide an opportunity for pastors to step away briefly from the persistent obligations of daily parish life and to engage in a period of renewal and reflection. Renewal periods are not vacations but times for intentional exploration and reflection, for drinking again from God’s life-giving waters, for regaining enthusiasm and creativity for ministry.

Details and application materials for the 2022 programs are now available. In the 2022 Lilly Endowment National Clergy Renewal Program and the 2022 Lilly Endowment Clergy Renewal Program for Indiana Congregations, eligible congregations will be able to apply for grants of up to $50,000 each to support a renewal program for their pastor. Up to $15,000 of the grant may be used for congregational expenses associated with the renewal program.
