What's New? New toys and new gadgets are the "in things" at this time of year - Christmas and New Year. Most children, and even adults, make lists or at least think about what they might like to receive for gifts. Christmas Day is usually spent opening gifts with family and friends and telling others what we have been gifted, and if it is something like a new car, that gift is taken out for a spin so it can be "shown off."

A look at the trending Christmas gifts for 2023 given by the New York Times Rev. Dr. Ore L. Spragin, Jr., (https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2023/us/2023-gift-guide.html. Accessed 12-21Editor 2023) revealed a lot of gifts that I personally would neither want nor buy for anyone on my gift list. Many of them would be of no use or of little interest to me. However, they would make fine gifts for some people who would relish in the pleasure of having and using them.

Often what we Christians (and even many PR persons who have no real interest in the things of Christ or the church) say is the reason for the season and the real meaning of Christmas gets lost in the joy of new things.

I am calling us to remember that reason and meaning and to lose ourselves in the lasting joy of Christmas. Yes, I am recalling the announcement of the angels of the birth of Christ - the one who has brought peace on earth and goodwill to all people, the one who came to save his people from their sins, the one who was the real presence of God with us, Immanuel. At this time of year, have you received him with great joy and told about him with great enthusiasm? Have you shown him off to your family and friends and in your neighborhood? Have you made others green with envy and filled with jealousy so that they want the Jesus that you have?

We talk about new toys and new gadgets, but what about that new talk and new walk? The songwriter said, "I've got a new talk ... a new walk ... a new song ... over in Zion, and it's mine, mine, all mine." As believers celebrating the gift of Christ to us and all the gifts that he has brought to us, we should be bragging and boasting in him and about him. We have been called to testify of him to the world, and we have been empowered to do so with the gift of the Holy Spirit. In this age of grievous deceit and open lies, we have been given the truth of the gospel and the power to not only declare it but to also live it so that others may see the new us, the newness in us.

As believers and disciples of Christ, we have been given new hearts, made into new creatures, and been given a new commandment: to love one another. We have the option to play with the new Christmas gifts given to us by our parents and others, and we gladly take that option. No one has to compel us to do so. We also have the option to display Christ to the world, to tell others about the gift that he is and the gifts that he brings. What have you done with that option? Are you wearing Christ as you would a new fur coat or stylish hat? Are you blasting Christ to the world as you would that new MP3 or album? Can we see it?

Make this your goal for the new year ... and aim for it ... to be a herald for Christ, the gift of God to the whole world, the Savior of all. In fact, YOU be the gift of God to the world in the name and power of Christ.

BE THE "WHAT'S NEW!" This is my prayer for you ... and for me. Amen.

December 6, 2023 I am writing this note in response to several recent inquiries from subscribers regarding the status of their subscription to our great denominational organ and periodical, The Christian Index. Here is some information that I hope will be helpful in this matter.

Those who subscribe to the paper (printed and mailed) version of The Christian Index generally do so at their annual conference. Usually, the presiding prelate of that episcopal district will designate certain persons to solicit and receive written subscriptions from the clergy and lay members and will encourage others present to also take a subscription. Payment is received at that time, and the completed forms and payments are forwarded to the Department of Publications (Publisher, Dr. Roderick Lewis) from the bishop’s office. The Department of Publications then processes these subscription orders, including any changes of address, and mails them accordingly.

Those who subscribe for the paper version apart from the annual conference setting also fill in a form and mail it, along with payment, directly to the Department of Publications, which then processes the form and payment.

BE BOLD: Face Now-Embrace Next-See New Refuse To Be Mediocre Happy New Year 2024!

I pray that this year will be a blessing to you and your family. God will con�nue to meet your needs and grant your prayer requests, in Jesus’ name.

Doing just enough or going through the mo�ons does not challenge people to operate in a spirit of excellence. For this ar�cle, I will use the following categories: unsa�sfactory, mediocre, and great as they relate to the local church. In season 4 of C-ME Grow, we looked at the book, I Refuse to Lead A Dying Church. The thesis of the book is that God has called all leaders (Lay and Clergy) to lead growing and healthy congrega�ons. I believe we will not be successful with unsa�sfactory or mediocre leadership.

Have we answered correctly? On page two of the Pastor's Quarterly Conference report, we find these words, “Describe the general condi�on and spiritual state of the local Church,” followed by a few lines to respond. The pastor’s response is cri�cal to the life of the local congrega�on, but have we answered correctly?

Asking a pastor to describe the general condi�on and spiritual state of the congrega�on is subjec�ve, but it is necessary. As leaders, we cannot look at our congrega�on through utopia lenses. We must be inten�onal and cri�cal so that we do not miss a chance to cri�que our leadership and our work. This is a great place to look at the local church from a vibrant lens. Are we just merely glossing over our descrip�on of our general condi�on and our spiritual state, hoping that the conversa�on doesn't get too deep?

Are we moving to excellence? Before I move on, there is a similar ques�on that is asked in the church conference by the pastor. “Can anything more be done to strengthen and build up the church in the community and to advance the cause of Christ?” (CME Book of Discipline, Chapter 10, “Church Conference," ¶260) We must find ourselves in spaces of opera�onal and vibrant excellence. We get there by challenging ourselves to be greater.

Are we accountable? The pastor as the leader must refuse to be unsa�sfactory or mediocre in lifestyle, administra�on, spirituality, and prayer. When we are accountable to God and each other, being unsa�sfactory or mediocre is not an op�on. We want to go above and beyond. We want to be great. We must also be selfcompelled, as well as by others. Dr. Jerry Woodfork, Re�red Chief Jus�ce and Presiding Elder of the Atlanta Rome District would say, “Raise the roof 3 inches,” or “We are in the Major League.” This means greatness and excellence are expected; we are the professionals in our context. How can we move beyond being unsa�sfactory or mediocre? In 2024, don’t be a bore, but create more and soar! Vibrance is the way to a welloiled machine all parts doing her/his job. I challenge each of us to think vibrantly, for as a person thinketh they can become.

VIRTUES OF WAITING Zephyr Fraser They that wait on the Lord, shall renew their strength. (Isaiah 40:31) Each one of us has at some time in our life prayed to God to answer our prayer immediately during times of illness, danger, trouble, confusion, and lawlessness.

We are experiencing mass shootings, multiple acts of homicides, and senseless hate crimes.

We are all left wondering how the Lord of Love can allow these despicable acts to occur.

Well, if we believe the scriptures when it says: To all things there is a season, and a time for every matter under Heaven (a time to be born and a time to die; a time to kill and a time to heal; etc. (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8) In times like these, we must rely on God's wisdom and not our own understanding.

The first virtue of waiting is: FAITH - to believe in that which is unseen. The Lord's purposes are much higher and eternal, whereas our wants and desires are strictly immediate and earthly. (Isaiah 55:8-9) The second virtue of waiting is: HUMILITY - You must be humble. This quote from writer, Tim Ferris, "Words to Live By" sums up humility.

"What we fear doing the most, is usually what we most need to do".

The third virtue of waiting is: PATIENCE - We often hear this statement, "Patience is a virtue". Do we know what that means? In the scriptures, patience means "long-suffering or forbearance". Patience is spiritual nourishment that the Holy Spirit provides to us as we wait and trust God to intervene right on time. (Galatians 5:22-23).

Waiting on God isn't passive or idle; it requires steadfast focus on his wisdom, goodness, and faithfulness, no matter how challenging a situation may seem.

A final thought: God may not come when we want him, but God is right on time.

Making Room for God in 2024: A Reflection on Intentionality, Grace, and Growth As we bid farewell to 2023 and eagerly welcome 2024, it’s a natural time for reflection and anticipation. It’s a moment to set our sights on growth opportunities, particularly in our relationship with God and our approach to living intentionally. In the spirit of Gospel singer Jonathan McReynolds’ song, “Make Room,” let’s delve into the idea of making space for God in our lives.

McReynolds’ moving lyrics remind us that we find room for what we truly treasure and make time for what we genuinely desire. The challenge is clear: let’s intentionally prioritize our relationship with God in the coming year.

This may require consciously rearranging our priorities in a world buzzing with distractions and obligations.

The lyrics resonate with the struggle many face in balancing the demands of daily life with the desire for spiritual connection. McReynolds identifies several potential obstacles crowding our lives—our will, way, ego, plans, schedule, and itinerary. Yet, he declares: “I will make room for you.” This declaration invites us to assess what might be crowding our lives and how we can intentionally create space for God. In a world filled with constant connectivity and digital noise, the idea of making room for God raises essential questions. Can we unplug, disconnect, and steal away from the constant barrage of information? What if we took a day off from the internet or reduced our time on social media platforms? McReynolds’s lyrics challenge us to consider what habits, attitudes, or activities we can adjust to prioritize our connection with the Divine. Can we make room if we change some habits and adjust our attitudes?

The call to action is clear: be still and invite the Holy Spirit into our space. Tarry with God, linger with expectation and be intentional about spending time with Him. It’s an invitation to reflect on our daily activities, identify what may be hindering our spiritual growth, and intentionally make room for God. As we enter 2024, be mindful of the need to make more space for God. The challenge extends beyond personal growth—it’s a call to share God’s grace with others. Showing grace should be our initial response, especially when faced with situations that might tempt us to respond differently. It’s a reminder to practice the same grace, let’s say that again; the same grace that God extends to us daily—that pardoning, loving, patient, all-sufficient grace. “Show God’s grace to everyone you encounter; it truly makes a difference. If it wasn’t for grace, where would we be?”

In the spirit of self-improvement, we need to target specific areas in our lives that need attention. These plans should align with our desire to seek God first and make intentional room to receive His presence.

As we embark on the journey that is 2024, let’s embrace the challenge to make room for God. Let’s be intentional, show grace, and continually strive for growth. Above all, give God the praise He so richly deserves.

May the coming year be a time of spiritual renewal, intentional living, and abundant grace.

On Thursday, November 2, 2023, six men incarcerated at the Northwest Correctional Complex (NCC) marched across the stage to receive their Bachelor of Science in Business degree from Lane College. Their educational trajectory is a continuation of historical and momentous strides made by Tennessee Higher Education Initiative (THEI) to help educate men and women behind the wall.

The graduates were the first in the facility's history to receive a bachelor’s degree. To add to the list of firsts, the students were also the first in the state of Tennessee to receive degrees from a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) while incarcerated.

THEI, along with educational partners Lane College and the Tennessee Department of Correction, celebrated the fortitude and commitment of the six men who have shifted the course of history in the state of Tennessee by forging a path for others to follow. Each student is a testament to the indomitable spirit of resilience our brothers behind the wall possess when given opportunities to excel and engage with the transformative and liberative power of education that was paved with sacrifice.

“They are coming home,” stated Laura Ferguson Mimms, Executive Director of THEI. “We are breaking the cycle of recidivism that tells us that 47% will return to [incarceration] if we continue to do exactly what we have always done.”

Dr. Ferguson Mimms continued, “When we introduce post-secondary educational options while the individual is incarcerated, we reduce the risk of recidivism by nearly half. I will always remember the first day of classes at NCC. The lecture was supposed to be online, but the president came to speak to the students in person. He talked about the history of Lane College and the legacy of HBCUs as a tool for Black liberation. The students were absolutely mesmerized.”

Lane’s president, Dr. Logan Hampton, shared after the ceremony, “Lane College and THEI have been a natural fit. Lane is deeply committed to the transformative liberal arts education, and Lane College has a history of helping students excel despite challenging environments and backgrounds. The Lane faculty were confident they could ensure the full integrity of college access for incarcerated students, and they have. The Lane/THEI partnership has been an overwhelming success!”

Richard Donnell, Sr., Senior Advisor to the President, shared, “Lane College has an academic focus on tomorrow, not yesterday, and helping students to realize the power of their potential has been a hallmark of Lane College since 1882. We continue to be excited about the partnership with THEI, and we are confident in Lane’s ability to help students of diverse backgrounds earn their college degrees.”

Lane is grateful for our amazing faculty and their insistence that we develop a best-in-class program to reach incarcerated scholars.”

Also present was Bishop Marvin Frank Thomas, Presiding Prelate of the First Episcopal District (states of Tennessee and Arkansas) who provided the invocation and welcomed attendees on behalf of the Lane College Board of Trustees. In addition to his service at Lane College, Richard Donnell also serves as a Steward at Lane Tabernacle CME Church (Jackson, TN).

About THEI Tennessee Higher Education in Prison Initiative (THEI) is a non-profit organization working to disrupt systems of harm and create opportunities for autonomy and success by providing college access to people inside Tennessee prisons, preparing students for skillful re-entry, and reducing barriers to continued education and achievement.

Innovative Student Support Services Launched Submitted by Jake Martin Chief Marketing & Communications Officer Texas College

Texas College has launched a newly invigorated Student Support Services (SSS) Program, which employs an overarching “umbrella” approach. This SSS Program provides services that truly advocate for students; enhances educational experiences by engaging the students; improves academic success through services provided; and promotes student growth and development through partnerships within the College and in the community. The SSS Program also contributes to the culture and framework of the College by contributing to the core values of Texas College, which are Academic Excellence, Integrity, Perseverance, Social Responsibility, Tolerance, and Community Service.

The mission of the Texas College Student Support Center is to facilitate a supportive environment for academic success and personal enrichment through proactive and individualized services available to all students beginning at the first semester of enrollment through graduation. Participants are challenged to take charge of their learning and develop skills that enable them to enhance their lives and experience academic excellence.

The program goals for the 2023-2024 academic year are: 1. Increase student access, engagement, persistence, retention, and success through more integrated and comprehensive student services.

2. Improve student awareness of college services, information, activities, and programs.

Major Functions: • Lead Student Services team in assessment, planning, and reporting; • Student communications: program marketing; • Enhance student engagement; • Compile, address, and assess students’ progress; • Promote Student Services across the campus; and • Collaborate with divisions and units in Academic Affairs and Student Affairs to promote and provide student activities, clubs, and organizations.

An added feature of the program is the Career Center to assist students in making career and life planning choices. Students seeking assistance in career choices aligned with their major, or in gaining skills, are aided by the Career Center in the career search process. Moreover, students are encouraged to visit the Career Center and explore the wealth of career and job search information available, inclusive of internet-based and computerized career guidance programs.

Engagement programs such as resume writing, interviewing skills, and appropriate business attire have been implemented and are designed to help Texas College students acquire the skills necessary for successful job searching, as well as to connect students with potential employer contacts.

Major Functions: • Provide career interest and personality assessments; • Provide job and labor market information; • Provide information on nontraditional career options; • Pre-employment services: job readiness workshops, resume writing, interview skills; • Host quarterly workshops to provide students with information about appropriate interview skills and attire; • Host annual/biannual Career Fair; • Provide career and employment outreach to division classrooms, through the Academic Symposium (College Assembly), and to local schools and various community partners; • Post job openings through social media and physical publications; • Provide assistance/computers for students to update resumes and search/apply for jobs online; and • Assist employers with finding suitable employees.

The Student Support Services Program provides academic support services for Texas College students by providing academic support, tutoring services, and testing accommodations for students who have disclosed that 504 accommodation services are needed. Under the American Disabilities Act and Section 504, a person is an individual with a disability if he or she has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities. In order for academic accommodations to be received, students are required to provide documentation to the Office of Academic Affairs regarding their disability and identify their needs. Examples of available services could include adaptive equipment, audio textbooks, interpreters, note takers, readers, and/or special testing accommodations.

Tutoring services are also offered for general education courses, as well as major areas. However, tutoring is also supported with engagement activities that help students with skills and practice for studying, organization, time management, test preparation, and note taking.

Recently, a Major Fair was hosted in the McKinney Hall Connector on the campus of Texas College as a grand opening event for the Student Support Services Program. The program was designed to help student’s gather information about the programs of study offered at Texas College, as well as discover majors of interest they perhaps had not considered before, or decide on a major. Transforming the space into an academically festive and engaging environment, each division and major were represented by having a display board that depicted information about the area of study, as well as careers associated with the major, to help students envision themselves within the respective field.

Zion Project Celebrates Cemetery’s 14th Fundraising Event “From Beale Street … to Zion”

Davis, Board Chair – On Thursday, October 5, 2023, the Zion Project Fundraising attendees took a memorable trip “From Beale Street to Zion” as they reflected on the memory of Jim Turner, a music legend interred in Zion Christian Cemetery, who greatly influenced and mentored W. C. Handy’s world-wide renown. Born in Arkansas in 1869, Turner emerged as Beale Street’s first star in 1887. He played violin, the lead solo instrument that attracted the most ambitious and flashy players. Born blessed with magical hands, Turner grew up in the Beale environment … He knew the fiddle high and low having learned lessons from Prof. John R. Lowe, who led a brassy ensemble on Beale, and from West Dukes, the breakdown fiddler who’d entertained around the market house since slavery. (Preston Lauterbach) Handy began playing with Turner, a gifted fiddler, in Florence, AL during the 1880’s and later the two played in Clarksdale, MS and in surrounding clubs. Turner moved on to Memphis and recommended Handy as the leader for a local band. Handy got the job and Turner later joined his band. Handy’s 14-month-old daughter, Florence, died in 1908 and was buried in the Zion Cemetery. Turner later died in 1910 at the age of 41 and was also buried in Zion. Handy’s fame continued to grow until his death in 1958 at the age of 84. Turner, as Handy’s early mentor and later colleague, is the missing link in American music, an unknown, unrecorded artist who bridged the improvised, unlettered Beale Street sound of the nineteenth century to mainstream, twentieth-century pop. Representing Turner and Handy at the event were Johnny Lacey and Jerald Walker with renditions of “Beale Street Blues” and “St. Louis Blues”.

While remembering Turner and Handy during the evening, the fundraising event also saluted community leaders with recognition awards. Awardees included Memphis City Councilwoman Cheyenne Johnson (a member of Mt. Pisgah CME Church), Dr. Russ Wigginton, President of the National Civil Rights Museum, Mr. G. Graham Perry III, Historic Cemetery Preservation Specialist (TN Historical Commission), and Dr. Warner L. Dickerson (a member of Greenwood CME Church), former President of the Memphis Branch NAACP which during his tenure was often the largest branch in the nation.

The 15-acre Zion Christian Cemetery is owned by the CME Church and, as a 20-year restoration success initiative, has been continuously supported by gifts from Bishops, General Officers, and other CME’s, in addition to contributions from national and local donors.

Founded in 1876 by freed slaves, Zion Christian Cemetery has more than 30,000 people of color interred. The last burial was in 1974. In 1986 the property was deeded to the CME Church for “safekeeping” and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in February 1990. As an additional fundraiser, the Project has also published a history of the Cemetery entitled “Historic Zion Cemetery in Memphis.”

Mt. Lebanon CME Church Victim of Arsonist Submitted by Geraline Ray, Reporter Greenville/Texarkana District Eighth Episcopal District

As Christians, we know that we can always start our lives anew when we seek forgiveness from God, but how do we react when forgiveness is due from us? Are we able to forgive as God has forgiven us?

On September 29, 2023, our church was set on fire by a sixteen-year-old male Caucasian whose crime could be called a “hate crime.” This young man left the highway, whether intentionally or unintentionally, and uprooted our church sign which proudly proclaimed, “WELCOME TO MT. LEBANON CHURCH.” The sign was set in the ground with about a foot and a half of concrete, so when the young man hit it, there was considerable damage done to his car. Information provided to us was that it had been stolen from his grandmother because he was not allowed to drive it.

We do not know whether he had planned to knock down the sign, grew angry because of the damage done to his car and decided to avenge himself by damaging the church, or exactly what he was thinking, but he had to walk the distance to the church, which can be seen from a major highway and is right off a country lane road. He had to leave the car because it was embanked on the mound of dirt where a fiber optic pole and a water main of concrete were situated.

His story was that he broke into the church because darkness was approaching, and he needed a place to sleep. He found a candle in the kitchen, accidentally dropped it and the whole place including all our foam-covered pew chairs, the ten-foot cathedral ceiling, pulpit and choir area and piano, pastor’s study and 44’x40’ sanctuary area were destroyed.

My husband happened to pass the mound where the car was embanked and called the neighbor whose house is right across from the area to ask if he had noticed it. Our neighbor hadn’t, but that’s not remarkable because we are in our seventies and sometimes don’t hear well when our televisions are on.

It had not turned dark out. Anyway, about thirty to forty minutes later, our neighbor called to say that someone was out at the church, but no one was scheduled to be out there, and the light in the rear area was on. He then saw the light turned out, so he

asked my husband to come and meet him at the church because he didn’t want to confront whoever was in the church by himself.

Ten minutes later when my husband arrived, he saw smoke rushing out the sanctuary windows which had exploded because of the heat. Our neighbor said he saw someone looking out at him as he drove around the church. My husband didn’t see anyone by then, but because of the widespread devastation, no one could have stayed inside.

Calls to 911 brought a host of firetrucks and police cars in a timely manner. We had a double row of firetrucks and officer cars in our church yard.

The young man was found sitting somewhere alongside where the church set. He did not put up a fuss when he was apprehended in cuffs. He was Continued on next page January 2024 • The Christian Index

The Upshur County Sheriff came by the following Sunday morning to see if everything was alright. I, your reporter, was teaching our Sunday School class before our Pastor, Rev. Shalanda Williams, started the business meeting with the members present to discuss our options for the future. Pastor Williams told us that we all needed to pray for the young man that he gets help for his inclination as well as for his soul.

Our Pastor Williams is married to Rev. Karl Williams whose church meets on first and third Sundays. We were welcomed by them to fellowship at their church, which we began on October 8, 2023.

The Gregg County Fire management team came down about midday of October 1, 2023, the Sunday evening that we met, and stayed until late evening collecting evidence.

That Monday, Bob Hallmark, a reporter for KLTV, Channel 7 came out while my husband was securing a cable wire fence down the front of the church yard with NO TRESPASSING signs to prevent others from just wandering around on the church grounds. He did a feature story. KTEK from Channel 19, called and made plans to interview someone from the church. My husband and I were the only ones available.

Tuesday, after having contacted Guide One, our CME Church insurance company, I was contacted by their GC3 General Adjuster for large losses who resides in Dallas and also by a representative of a clean-up company for when the church construction begins. We have also been contacted or visited by Hancock Claim Consultants, Nelson Forensics, and two GC3 Large Loss Representatives. We are looking for an engineer to contact us at any moment.

So much is happening so quickly that it lets me see how God is moving in this place. I truly have faith that God is turning this evil into something good. Luke 6:37 tells us, “Do not judge and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven.”

Mark 11:25 tells us “And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.”

I was also heartened to find a quote that said, “Only God can make good come out of evil … God can bring good out of the evil that is all around us. He made eternal life spring from the death of Jesus. He makes good spring up from bad situations; he shines light where there is only darkness.” (https://slmedia.org/blog/godsfavourite-habit-transforming-evil-into-good.)

Romans 8:28, says, “God turns everything to good for those who love Him.” By faith, I will continue to pray for the young man to seek Jesus and for the continued timely building process of our church. We will also pray for the building of discipleship at Hickory Hill, who extend their welcome to Mt. Lebanon CME Church during our time of loss.

Batesburg-Leesville Literacy Board —Positively Impacted by CMEs Submitted by Theresa C. Muldrow

In today’s world, the key to success is an in-demand skill based on education. Getting an early start in education gives a young person a better chance of success in life. That is why I applaud the Batesburg-Leesville Literacy Board on their hard work and dedication to helping young people in the community. The summer literacy program is named Because I Can and is made up of interdenominational community leaders.

The better a child can read the better chance he or she has of being successful in school. For the last five years the B-L Summer Literacy Program has provided a five-week program of fun and innovative methods to improve the reading abilities of the children in the community.

The Program seeks to meet the needs of the students by focusing on a Growth Mindset which assumes that intelligence and other qualities, abilities, and talents can be developed with effort. The curriculum is aligned with the core learning standards followed by Lexington School District Three.

There was a community reader each morning to read their favorite childhood book and promote the theme for the program. This year the theme was KINDNESS. The program was held at Faith Lutheran Church in Batesburg. The Literacy Board has provided opportunities to help prepare 4/5K through 2nd graders for the challenges of tomorrow.

A shout out to the administration, staff, and teachers who worked so diligently to help young children get the necessary early tools to enable educational success. The scholars shared their work with their families on the last day of the program at the Finale, where certificates were presented to each scholar by their teacher.

Several CME members have been involved over the past 5 years with the program. Rev. Dr. Hicks serves as coordinator and is the esteemed pastor of Wesley Chapel CME Church in Batesburg, South Carolina. Mrs. Jessie Mae Edmond of Wesley Chapel has served as a board member, and James Muldrow of Cleaves Memorial continues to serve as a board member. Mrs. Donna Gives is a teacher and member of St. Matthew. Mr. Keith Tolen grew up in Wesley Chapel CME and is a distinguished artist who has shared his talents with the scholars.

This is the true American way for people to take time out of their busy schedules to help young people so they will be able to help others.

On March 29, 2023, Converted Heart CME Mission entered a partnership with the Interfaith Works Empowerment Center (IWEC) of Silver Spring, Maryland. This partnership with IWEC allowed us to hold worship services each Sunday at 9:00 a.m. After months of streaming from within our home, the Lord

opened this door and gave us a wonderful opportunity to share the gospel. I knew we were on the verge of something special, as space was made available for us to share the gospel. It has also turned into a space to do more within this community.

After a few weeks of conducting worship service, I heard the Lord speak the word “Transformation.” I wasn’t sure what to make of hearing this word, but what I noticed was that everyone we encountered at the center was transitioning from one place to another. They were either physically moving into a permanent housing arrangement or preparing to enter the work force.

Suddenly, it hit me; we could work on the outer appearance of the person and allow God to begin to change the heart, i.e., the inner core of the person.

Thus, Transformational Tuesdays was birthed.

On October 3, 2023, we held our first Transformational Tuesday event with nearly 25 persons signing up to receive a free haircut. We all know the feeling of receiving a fresh haircut from a barber or beautician. I am convinced that if we could begin to work on the outer appearance of a person 26

Submissions through the cutting of their hair, then a door to the heart can swing open and provide an opportunity to share the gospel. The apostle Paul said, “be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.” How a person looks at themselves often determines the level of confidence they have. Their condition of struggling with an addiction, facing a lack of opportunities, or wondering how long their dilemma will last, may not change overnight … and it often does not. However, if they can look at themselves in the mirror and begin to see the potential that is inside of them, perhaps the breakthrough is not far behind.

Transformational Tuesdays has given us the opportunity to cultivate relationships, which is one of the pillars of this mission. I am convinced that meeting basic and practical needs at the same time demonstrates dignity and respect to those who are often looked down upon.

Jesus Christ was committed to God’s will for his life. He understood that suffering was a part of his destiny, and he willingly sacrificed his life as a ransom for us. During his earthly ministry, he met many people with varying needs, and he reached them all at their point of need. He took a holistic approach when he dealt with people; his ministry was filled with examples of diversity and inclusion. He broke many barriers (education, ethnicity, race, socioeconomic status, and gender) to bring the gospel to everyone who would hear and accept God’s call to discipleship. He is the supreme example of inclusivity and Servant Leadership.

At Mt. Pilgrim CME, Jesus’s example of Servant Leadership, inclusive programming, meeting people at their point of need, and sacrificing for others is imitated during each season of the year. Missionary activities for youth and mature adults, celebrations of men, women, and unsung heroes, Vacation Bible School for children and adults, Lay Day Service, and The Marion C. Scipio Vesper Hour demonstrate a commitment to inclusion and holistically addressing the needs of others.

Youth/Missionary Sunday Sis. Linda Dedmon hosted the Youth/Missionary Program with assistance from members of the Christian Youth Fellowship (led by Sis. Robbie Franklin). Members of the CYF participated in the program in the following ways: Sis. Imani Duncan led the congregation in prayer, Sis. Jayla Cheatham read Scripture and offered an inspirational talk, and Sis. Mya Fuller led the church through the responsive reading. The young participants did a wonderful job filling key roles during the worship service, and they were complemented on their willingness to serve in any capacity without hesitation.

Sis. Jayla Cheatham’s talk was titled, “The Importance of Missionary Work.” She shared some important points about missionaries in the church.

She said missionaries are role models who serve God to the best of their ability. Missionaries are not perfect, but they follow Matthew 5:16 - “… let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (NIV of the Holy Bible). As a missionary, it is important to shine a bright light reflecting God’s goodness so that others will be drawn to our Heavenly Father. Jayla continued by saying that a Christian role model is Sis. Jayla Cheatham dedicated and demonstrates faith in God that reflects a flourishing relationship with Christ. Christian role models are available and willing to pray for, encourage, and help others be the best spiritual version of themselves. Additionally, role models are positive, empathetic, responsive to the needs of others, transparent, original, and non-judgmental. Jayla reminded us that we are all imperfect vessels, but when we rely on Christ, we can be good role models and fulfill the great commission.

Rev. Keaton Fuller delivered a powerful sermon to complete the service. The title of his message was, “Your Condition is NOT Your Conclusion.” The message focused on Acts 27: 20-25. Rev. Fuller encouraged the congregation by saying that “everything will be alright; God will see you through. As you go along your journey, you will have trials, but when you trust God, your condition is not your conclusion.” Rev. Fuller talked about Paul’s faith and how that faith shifted Paul’s attitude. When we hear a word from God and change our attitude and our perspective, we get to our destination with less stress and pressure. We should not let our attitudes toward our circumstances make us negative, and we should not speak negative things. Negative rhetoric makes us talk our way out of breakthroughs, blessings, and miracles. When we ignite our faith and change our thinking 28

Submissions and our language, we realize that God always has a way out. God is always in control, and the gradual process we experience as we go through trials helps increase our faith, develop our courage, fortify our strength, and teach us more about God. The women at Mt. Pilgrim CME enjoyed a Women’s Tea to fellowship, exchange ideas, honor women, and promote social interaction. The women wore beautiful hats, ministered to each other, shared the love of Christ, and enjoyed activities and a wonderful program planned by Sis. Linda Dedmon. Bro. Anthony Duncan, Bro. Maurice Fox, and Bro. Melvin Cole prepared a delicious meal and served the attendees. The women had a wonderful time together.

Mt. Pilgrim CME is blessed with humble servants who work behind the scenes to keep the business of the church going. They are faithful and diligent, and they perform tasks without seeking a reward or an accolade. We call these parishioners our unsung heroes, and we honored them with small floral arrangements. Many of our honorees were shocked and surprised, and several said the token of appreciation was unexpected. We look forward to honoring more of our unsung heroes.

“Twists and Turns: Following Jesus Changes the Game” was the Vacation Bible School theme. Lay Day Service The theme for the Lay Day Service was, “A Layman’s Call,” and the theme reminded us that each of us is given a gift to use in God’s service. The scripture reference was Acts 6:1-7. In these scriptures, seven men who were filled with the Holy Spirit and good sense were selected to care for the needs of the poor. Stephen, Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas were commissioned for service. Each of us received the Great Commission when we accepted Jesus Christ, and we were given gifts and talents that are needed in the community of faith. The director of the Lay Ministry at Mt. Submissions Marion C. Scipio Vesper Service Held at Mt. Pilgrim CME The late Mrs. Marion Scipio recognized the need for a separate department to address the unique problems facing spouses of ministers. She developed the Vesper Service and proposed workshops and a handbook specifically designed to meet the needs of ministers’ spouses. In 1996, The Ministers’ Spouses and Widows formally adopted the Marion C. Scipio Vesper Hour to support the Widow’s Mite Financial Fund. The theme of this year’s Vesper Service was, “Boldly Investing in and Embracing the Now and New,” and the scripture referenced was II Corinthians 4:7-10, KJV. The President of the DallasFort Worth/Northwest Texas Region Ministers’ Spouses, Widows and Widowers is Sis. Sharon Fuller. The speaker for the service was Sis. Yolonda Y. Fuller, the First Lady of Mt. Pilgrim CME. Sis. Yolonda Fuller’s message was wellreceived, and it focused on three points: 1) We must understand our value. As vessels of clay, we carry a powerful treasure. Our hope in God is that treasure, and it will never disappoint us. (l-r): Dr. Drexel Mitchell, Presiding Elder of the Fort Worth 2) As followers of Christ, we face trouble, District, Rev. Keaton Fuller, Pastor Mt. Pilgrim CME, Dr. danger, and persecution, but we are not forsaken Linda Barnett, Presiding Elder of the Northwest District, in them. Our suffering can help us rely on God, and Dr. Russell O. Fuller, Sr., Presiding Elder of the Dallas strengthen our faith, provide a compass for future District reference, improve our character, and give us a testimony that will help someone else.

3) God always provides a way of escape, and while we are going through trials, we can testify, teach, and pray to improve our lives and the lives of others. Our prayers may not yield results today, but they will in the future.

We had a time! That’s the common echo you will hear among the lay members of the Kansas/ Missouri Annual Conference. On Saturday, October 7, 2023, in Leavenworth, Kansas, the St. James CME Church pastored by Rev. Nicky Wright hosted the conference Annual Lay Banquet, themed, “Back Together Again.” The annual banquet made a triumphant return after Covid-19 with the scripture, Psalm 133:1, setting the tone of the banquet. The Kansas/Missouri Lay had fellowship in every way you can think possible.

From the host/comedian “Rain” bringing good, clean, bottom-of-the-belly, laughter-worthy jokes to the youth of St. James bringing forth inspiring liturgical dance, we laughed, fellowshipped, and most importantly, we had CHURCH! Minister Gregory Woodfork, Lay Leader of the Missouri District, and Brother Phillip Jones, Lay Leader of the Kansas District, saw to it that this was a fruitful gathering.

Led by Brother James Wesley of St. Matthew, who serves as the Kansas/Missouri Annual Conference Lay leader, the leadership ensured that the program consisted of a downright good 32

Submissions time for the members. Representation from across the annual conference was seen as members from each church, including both Kansas District Presiding Elder Anthony Hill and Missouri District Presiding Elder Dr. Patricia Havis, came to show support and have a healthy fellowship. Along with the great laughs and beautiful dance, the banquet was anointed with beautiful voices that included Min. Okima Havis of St. Matthew; a selection from the St. James choir lead by our annual conference treasurer, Bro. Montagga Wright; and Bro. Tim Robinson. All brought beautiful songs that both uplifted and stirred the ears and spirits of the participants.

While we enjoyed numerous talents throughout the event, we wouldn’t do the banquet justice if we didn’t acknowledge the anointed hands of the culinary staff at St. James, as they Members of the host church pose with the host pastor and prepared a meal that was downright delicious, blessing our their episcopal leader. As if a good spiritual time wasn’t had already, we closed the banquet with a powerful and uplifting word. Following the introduction by Presiding Elder Anthony Hill, who brought forth the keynote speaker for the banquet, the 58th Elected Bishop of the CME Church and Presiding Prelate of the 3rd Episcopal District, Bishop Sylvester Williams, Sr., brought a powerful word from Psalm 133 anchored around unity. He focused on three challenges to the church: 1. Coming together should be common and should be for everybody. 2. You can’t get to where you are going by yourself. 3. Unity means shared goals and shared responsibility, which means that we need to have a shared appreciation for each other’s gifts.

Bishop’s message started and ended with a relevant linkage between the current state of our House of Representatives and the church.

He closed with this thought, “We should be tired of looking like our current House of Representatives but seek to look like the church.”

After we closed the day and headed home with a clear call for unity, Rev. Nicky Wright summed the festivities with these words of reflection, “It was great to see us ‘Back together again’ after 4 years!

Nothing like the real thing, live and in living color!” As we move forward in the year, unified and focused on working together, standing on the foundation of the quadrennial theme, Be Bold: Face Now, Embrace Next, See New, we look forward to uniting again for the 2024 Kansas/Missouri Lay Banquet.

How do you serve a community of people whose homeland is in chaos ... where they are exiles in two countries that share land and sea? You connect with other like-minded, willing Christian soldiers and you go as far as you can, doing as much as you can in the time you have, with all of your heart and the power and protection of the Holy Spirit! In October of this year, a mission group comprised of Bishop James Walker (7th Episcopal District), Rev. Courtney Adams (Pastor of Phillips CME, 7th), Dean Paul Brown (Phillips School of Theology), Rev. Robert Williams (Pastor of Williams Memorial CME, 7th), Sis. Hilda Buie (Women’s Missionary Council, Overseas Missions Secretary, and member of the 6th), Sis. Tiffanie Thompson (CME Young Adult President, 5th), Sis. Ruth Douglas (GA North Region WMS President, 6th), Sis. Lillian Curlett (Episcopal Stewardess Vice President, 3rd), Sis. Tasheba Taylor (7th) and Sis. Carmen Fentes (7th) went to the Dominican Republic and did just that!

Items such as toiletries, hair products, school supplies and clothing were collected from family, friends, school children, church members and other supporters. Conference calls were held to discuss the theme – which centered around Psalm 139:14 (“I will praise thee for I am fearfully and wonderfully made”) – and how it might be incorporated for lessons with the children. It was decided to provide them with lessons in Spanish with the help of two of the Spanishspeaking missionaries, as well as special child-centered envelope designs which would contain a monetary blessing for them/their family as well.

Travel plans were solidified and on the afternoon of Tuesday, October 10, 2023, the group finally convened in person at the mission house.

Supplies were separated and packaged for the children who would soon come for their evening Bible study and play time. They came in small waves since school is split into morning and afternoon sessions due to a shortage of teachers. Rev. Adams and Sister Tiffanie led the children’s lesson with a movie excerpt about Joseph and the coat of many colors followed by a mini-lesson summary, playtime with the men (balls, 34

Submissions water balloons and the parachute game) and dinner (prepared by the host staff) served by the women in the group. Lastly, the children received their packages, some school supplies, and “special” envelopes before going home for the night.

The next morning began with breakfast and devotion before embarking on the journey to the first Batey (Haitian refugee camp) deep in the sugar cane fields of San Pedro de Marcois. The dirt road wound and split and had tall sugarcanes on the left, right and as far as one could see in front until finally in a small clearing the Batey appeared. Suitcases were unloaded and the group gathered in the church with members of the community. A couple of women from the group attempted to talk with the pastor’s wife about the needs and concerns that existed from the female perspective but were redirected to speak with the pastor himself.

Inside the church, the Pastor and the leader of the Batey shared information about some of the conditions in the community: goods are overpriced leading to constantly owing; those who work are unable to get their pay because Immigration “happens to show up” on payday, which would mean automatic and instantaneous deportation; and some have had their documents taken under the guise of trading them for Dominican citizenship but have never received anything. All were led in prayer for the community and its leaders followed by a lesson for the children which was given in Spanish and translated into Creole. The men then went out to the courtyard to give haircuts while the women did hair (braids, blow dry, flat iron) inside. Both the men and the women provided hair products and supplies (clippers, curling irons, etc.) the community could use to assist in earning a living. After passing out packages and serving food to all assembled, the mission group loaded up to head back to the mission house for dinner and to reflect and prepare (more separating and packaging) for the next day.

Thursday morning began once again with breakfast and devotion before loading the vehicles to journey to the second Batey. We were met by a group that appeared happy to welcome us and eager to share. While the “work” site was organized, a short walk around gave notice to the area where “the big black pot” was cooking the day’s meal, and a woman cried out to us as we passed her “home.” We learned the woman has mental health challenges (one of the concerns the women of the community shared with Bishop Walker and Overseas Missions Secretary, Hilda Buie) and has to be protected from herself, as well as the community has to be protected from her.

The children received their Spanish Bible study lesson that tied their uniqueness to being “fearfully and wonderfully made” just like each blade of grass, before being engaged in play. Fresh starfruit was a treat from the trees, as was learning about the “sleeping plant” that closes its leaves upon being touched. After talks and prayer with the adults and other children who had come from school, packages were once again distributed to all, along with clothing for the adults and school supplies, sweet treats and the special envelopes for the Continued on next page January 2024 • The Christian Index

Submissions Continued from previous page children, followed by a hot meal. The mission group left the suitcases as donations and headed back to the mission house to refuel, refresh and prepare for the next day’s visits.

Friday’s visits would be to two churches in communities where they had been forcibly moved, were trying to survive after rebuilding, and existed in the midst of construction which will likely cause another move in the future. Both churches are a literal “stone’s throw” from one another and strive to draw those nearby to Christ. There is a desire to secure the windows, reinforce the floor and serve as a sanctuary to those in need; despite their blaring conditions, they still seek to share Christ and serve others.

In every community visited, the stone floors, outhouses, excessive heat, and need for basics such as toiletries, clothing and to be seen as human – brothers and sisters estranged from what was home and excommunicated in their current “home” – makes it more than evident that there is much work to be done. You see desperation and gratitude in the faces of adults. You hear genuine excitement in the squeals of the children when they receive supplies or are engaged in play and for a moment – no matter how brief – are able to breathe knowing God has sent someone to show love.

The mission group was grateful to be the extended hands and feet of supporters in order to serve the Haitian communities of the Dominican Republic. Please support mission work overseas. The need is on an entirely different level compared to here in the United States. Although the border remained closed while we were there, thus making it impossible to visit our CME orphanage in Haiti, I am more than confident we made a difference on this side of the border!

Let me begin by thanking Senior Bishop L.L. Reddick III, Lady Wynde Reddick, and the Institute Director, Ms. Linda Woolage, along with all the wonderful people of the 8th Episcopal District for being kind and gracious to invite my wife, Mrs. Christine S. Buchanan to be the instructor for their Missionary Institute. I was asked to comment on two chapters of the book, “AUTHENTICALLY, UNIQUELY YOU,” by Joyce Meyer.

Getting to know who you really are strikes at the core of our being truly human. When I know who I am, then I can move forward answering many of life’s other questions such as, “Why am I here?”

“What is my purpose in life?” “How am I supposed to live?” “What am I gifted to contribute?” etc.

Now in the church, yes, the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, if we are going to be authentically, uniquely Methodists, if we are really going to be, as the late Bishop N.S. Curry would say, “Christians the Methodist way,” then we need to know who we really are as Methodists.

The name "Methodist" was in use in England long before it was applied to John Wesley and his friends. Holland N. McTyeire makes reference to the pamphlet, “A WAR AMONG THE ANGELS OF THE CHURCHES,” (1693) showing the use of the term “New Methodists” on the subject of justification; while Dr. Edmund Calamy says, “They called those who stood up for God Methodists.” Dr. Harry V. Richardson, in his book, “DARK SALVATION,” observed that Methodists were sarcastically called “Bible Bigots” and “the Holy Club.” In Wesley’s sermon entitled, “On Laying the Foundation of the New Chapel,” he observed that in reference to their methodical manner of life, a new sect of Methodists was springing up, alluding to the ancient school of physicians known by that name.

But what did John Wesley say a Methodist was? In his pamphlet, “THE CHARACTER OF A METHODIST,” (1872) Wesley described what he perceived are the characteristics of a true Methodist.

However, in 2020 Pastor David Wentz reviewed and revised those traits in his book, “THE CHARACTER OF A METHODIST.” The following is the updated version of Wesley’s teachings in modern-day

language with an introduction, suggestions for group use, and suggested Scriptures: 1.

A Methodist loves God. (Romans 5:5; 1st John 4:18; Romans 8:28; Mark 12:30; John 14:15) 2.

A Methodist rejoices in God. (Mark 12:30; Philippians 4:4, 11-12; 1st Peter 1:3-4) 3.

A Methodist trusts God. (Romans 5:1; 8:16; Philippians 4:6; 1st Peter 5:7) 4.

A Methodist prays. (Galatians 4:6; 1st Thessalonians 5:17-18; Job 1:21; James 1:17; Philippians 4:6; Luke 18:1; Romans 8:26) 5.

A Methodist loves people. (Mark 12:3031, Hebrews 10:24) 6.

A Methodist is pure in heart. (Matthew 5:8, 6:22).

A Methodist seeks to please God. (Psalm 73:25-26, Colossians 3:13, John 5:30, 1st John 1:5, Matthew 6:10) 8.

A Methodist keeps God’s Commandments.

A Methodist lives for God. (Galatians 2:19-20, 1st John 2:16, 1st Corinthians 10:31, Romans 5:1) 11.

A Methodist does right. (Colossians 3:17, Hebrews 4:13, 1st Peter 3:3) 12.

A Methodist does good. (Titus 3:2, Ephesians 4:22, Philippians 4:8, Matthew 25:35-36, Hebrews 10:24) John Wesley believed these descriptions of a Methodist distinguished them from other groups. He also believed that these marks were the marks of a real Christian and Methodism was nothing more or nothing less than plain old Christianity in all its fullness.

Whosoever bears these marks is a Christian in his heart and in his life, and thus, he is both a real Christian and a real Methodist.

Let me conclude by suggesting that each of us who claims to be “Methodist” should sit down and ponder these characteristics and see if we are who we say we are. For if we are not who we say we are, then who is that person in the mirror? AMEN. January 2024 • The Christian Index

VISION REALIZED!!

Hallelujah! Behold what the Lord has done. What we've been waiting for has come to pass. Arriving for dedication today, the vision of our 10th Anniversary celebration in Feb. 2020. Your contributions helped us to achieve this.

On February 14, 2010, the then Prelate of the 10th Episcopal District, Bishop Kenneth W. Carter dedicated the CME Cathedral in Uyo, Nigeria, named after the former Senior Bishop Marshall Gilmore. During the Cathedral 10th-year anniversary celebration on February 14, 2020, the Church under the Episcopal Leadership of Bishop Prof. Godwin Thompson Umoette of blessed memory, birthed a vision to acquire a Van as a memorial, to aid its evangelistic activities. The event was graced by Bishop James Walker, Dr. Victor Taylor, Dr. Leon Moore, Dr. Ore Spragin, and Dr. Paul Brown, along with some other friends from the USA. Funds were raised to support the vision and members along with guests donated generously.

Economic meltdown set in due to the COVID Pandemic and the vision hibernated. Though it tarried, as recorded in Habakkuk 2:3, the Church held on to and worked on the vision until it became a reality on November 4, 2020, during the Episcopal Leadership of Bishop Dr. Ricky D. Helton.

It was a moment of celebration as members of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, Bishop Marshal Gilmore Cathedral, presented her first new coaster bus for dedication in Uyo. The church went agog (into wild celebration) during the dedication thanksgiving service, praising God for bringing the vision to pass.

The presentation was done by the Chief Steward of the Church, Steward Emmanuel Udofia on behalf of the planning committee. Receiving the bus for dedication, the pastor in charge, Rev Utibe Ekwere, appreciated God for His faithfulnes and thanked the members for the support in seeing that the dream of having a bus for the church became a reality. The dedication was performed by Rev. Dr. Koko Daniel, the Administrative Assistant to Bishop Helton, in company of the Pastor-in-charge Rev. Utibe Ekwere and the Associate, Rev. Isemin Etuk.

Koko Daniel, the Personal Administrative Assistant to the Bishop who led in the moderation for the service of dedication, later invited Mr. Friday Ufot Ben and Mrs. Elizabeth Umoette to perform the commissioning and cutting of ribbons. Those who witnessed the dedication and presentation of the bus were Steward Udeme Matthew Ntong, the National Laymen President; Steward Hon. Bassey Willie; Steward Christopher Akpan; and Stewardess Obot Moses Inyang, among other stewards and stewardesses of the church, members of the church, choir groups, men, women and children. Members in return, expressed satisfaction by thanking God for this dream coming to reality in a special thanksgiving session. The celebration ended with a cutting of the special cake led by Mrs. Elizabeth Godwin Umoette, alongside other officers of the church.

The acquisition of the 28-seater Toyota coaster bus stands as a visible testimony of the people's faithfulness to the service of God in the CME CHURCH. This development is in fulfillment of the Church’s commitment towards advancing in its evangelism efforts in reaching the unreached and promoting and expanding the Church within its community.

Indeed, a dream fulfilled!

Loving the Enemy: Jochebed and Bithiah’s Story NCC Newsletter – November 18, 2023

“But I say to you who are listening: Love your enemies; do good to those who hate you; bless those who curse you; pray for those who mistreat you.” (Luke 6:27–28, NRSVue)

Today we are faced with the challenges of war, religious nationalism, and polarization. The conflicts in Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Israel-Palestine, the Horn of Africa, Syria, and Ukraine immediately come to mind. Yet conflicts and wars are perpetual and threaded throughout the Bible. Hunger and famine are related consequences of these horrors of death. The hatred and fears about who is an enemy have fueled and still fuel the atrocities of bloodshed and loss of life.

Yet Jesus says, “love your enemies, do good to those who hate you and even bless those who curse you and pray for those who mistreat you.” For many this seems counter-intuitive and certainly not doable. After all, in so doing, self-interest may be compromised.

Exodus 2:1–10 provides a lesson on what it means to love and pray for the “enemy.” Although enemies, an enslaved Israelite mother, Jochebed; her daughter Miriam; and an African princess, Bithiah, reject the hatred to show love to Moses.

Together they protect baby Moses’s life. They conspire to work across enemy lines, with God on their side.

Jochebed and Miriam place baby Moses in a basket and send him on his way to the river waters—hidden, not knowing where or if the baby will arrive safely to a destination point. God sees them and steps in with the angels and protects the vision of the mother and daughter and, most importantly, baby Moses.

The so-called enemy, Bithiah (the Pharoah’s daughter), sees the child and does not offer what may be the expected response of showcasing the baby to her father as a prize for his evil law. Rather, the African princess has compassion for the baby and extends hospitality to the baby, his mother, and his sister. And she protects him, not only during the encounter but also by adopting the child into her regal home! This, after the dignified negotiation with Miriam and Jochebed about the nursing care of the baby.

This important and timely biblical illustration invites us to ask ourselves what we are doing to cross socalled “enemy lines”—not only to pray for our enemies, but to show love to our enemies, with children in mind first. How do we re-imagine and implement alternative pathways that stop violence and engage love and diplomacy? Nonpartisan advocacy is one of the ways Bread does this. We invite you to work with us to advocate for a farm bill that benefits all.

Joining the Great Cloud

Gladys Stephens Brown Faithful Unto Death

Gladys Stephens Brown, a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, entered this world on August 16, 1942, and peacefully entered eternal rest on November 5, 2023. Her parents, the late Rayvalda and Cecile Stephens, welcomed their youngest daughter into their family in Pelham, Georgia. She and her sister, Mary, enjoyed traveling to visit family with their parents and decorating for Christmas. Gladys attended elementary and secondary education at Mitchell County Training of Pelham.

Together, Mary and Gladys moved to Atlanta to attend Clark College, presently Clark Atlanta University. During her time at Clark, she made two pivotal decisions that shaped her journey. She was initiated into Alpha Pi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and she met and married the love of her life, the debonair, Rev. E. Lynn Brown, a student at Phillips School of Theology.

Upon their union, Gladys and Edward began a remarkable marriage that took them from Georgia to Tennessee. She embarked on a fulfilling career in education and embraced her role as a minister's wife. Gladys' professional life was marked by dedication and excellence. She initially began her teaching career at Owen Union College, then LeMoyne-Owen College, and on to Shelby State Community College (presently Southwest Tennessee Community College). Seeking to improve her teaching skills, she pursued further education at Memphis State University, earning a Master of Education in Business and completing post-graduate work. While at Shelby State, she became a tenured faculty member, associate professor, Chairperson of the Office Administration Department, and published textbook author. During her long academic career, she garnered the respect and admiration of administrators, faculty, and students alike.

Beyond her professional pursuits, Gladys supported her husband's ministry at Greenwood, Mt. Pisgah, and Temple of Love Christian Methodist Episcopal Churches. Gladys actively participated in various community, civic, and social organizations, where she championed education and displayed a passionate commitment to youth development.

In 1986, she moved to Los Angeles, California, with her husband who was elected the 46th Bishop of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, serving the Ninth Episcopal District. After serving the Ninth, they relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio, to serve the Second Episcopal District. Embracing her role as First Lady, Gladys served with humility as Missionary Liaison and advisor to the Ministers' Spouses, Widows and Widowers Department. She prioritized the well-being of the members and the community while maintaining her commitment to God's work. Subsequently, Gladys returned to Memphis and devoted herself to the local higher education and civic communities.

She actively participated in her cherished organizations: Alpha Kappa Alpha, Incorporated, The Links, Incorporated, and Top Ladies of Distinction, Incorporated. Along with her social and charitable endeavors, she also enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and abroad. Two of her most epic excursions were trips to Italy, alongside her daughter, sister, and niece and an infamous multi-state road trip with her daughter and two of her grandsons.

Additionally, she held a special fondness for family vacations to Hawaii, cherishing family moments and creating lasting memories with her loved ones.

Gladys's reunites with her husband, Bishop E. Lynn Brown, and her son, Alonzo Victor Brown, in God's embrace.

Her soft smile and caring voice will continue to be cherished by her daughter, Cheronda Brown Guyton (Andrew) and her grandsons, Kyrhee (KJ) Brown, Alonzo (AJ) Brown, Stephen Guyton and Sean Guyton; daughter-in-law, Churee Brown; her sister, Mary Joyce Harris (Winfred); her niece and great-niece, Stephanie C. Harris and Camile Harris and her nephew and great nephew, W. Keith Harris (Kyri) and Winfred (Trey) Harris; and a host of cousins, relatives, friends, sorors, Links, and Top Ladies. Known for her generosity and selflessness, she will be fondly remembered for her love for God, her family, and friends. Her vibrant and colorful spirit illuminated a life that was long, full, fruitful, and faithful. She embraced one of her grandson's treasured quotes by Howard Thurman, "There is a strength beyond my strength, that gives strength to my strength." With her strength, from her faith, family and friends, Gladys lived her life her way, on her terms, with no regrets.
