God is speaking. Are you listening?

On December 11 and 13, 2020, our denomination observed two celebrations of our 150th anniversary as a church body. On the evening of the 11th, we remembered our humble beginnings at Mother Liberty (then Liberty Lane) in Jackson, Tennessee. Then on the 13th, we were challenged to consider our future.

The speaker on Friday was Bishop James B. Walker, Presiding Prelate of the Seventh Episcopal District. On Sunday afternoon, Senior Bishop Lawrence L. Reddick, Presiding Prelate of the Eighth Episcopal District gave the message.

Both Bishops Walker and Reddick dealt with conversations between God and humans. Bishop Walker came from the Gospel of Luke, exploring Zacharias' conversation with the angel Gabriel, while Bishop Reddick explored the text from the Gospel of Matthew 6:17 and posed the question, “What is underneath?”

Perhaps the Spirit is leading us to ask on what foundations has this church been built, and what is God saying to you and me today for the future of this denomination? In this 150th year, we should be looking at not only how the Lord has used this church in the past, but also listening for directions the Lord is giving for the future life and ministry of this denomination.

God is speaking all the time, like radio signals in the air. A radio has the capacity to pick up any or many such signals, depending on the type of radio. But it must be tuned to a particular frequency and wavelength.

Further, the antenna must be of the right type and length or height, and even then, static and interference must be overcome in order to receive an intelligible signal. Any fault in reception is usually on the part of the receiver, not the broadcaster or transmitter. In other words, if we as a body fail at the mission, the fault is not with God.

As a member or leader of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church and a member of the body of Christ, is your antenna high enough? Is your spiritual ear tuned to God? Are you trying Rev. Dr. Ore L. Spragin, Jr., to align yourself with God’s Editor wavelength and attending to God’s frequency of transmission? Bishop Walker seemed to be addressing individuals; Bishop Reddick, the church. Both must respond, and the church’s answer comes from the individual collective, that is, the sum or conclusion of the mass.

The requirement is that we pray and listen and even respond as individuals, especially over the next 18 months as we anticipate the 2022 General Conference.

But at the time we come to General Conference, we must act collectively, as a body, when we come to General Conference. What will we say? What will we conclude? Who will we show that we are as the body of Christ? What will our actions say about Christ? Will we speak with the voice and inspiration of God, or will we speak with the voice of selfish vainglory? Will we seek the good of the whole and the edification of the church, or will we seek our own will and way?

The question Christ asks has not and will not go away: Who do men say that I am? Their answer will in part depend on our witness. Our witness depends on our ability to hear the sublime voice of God and our availability to do God’s will in the power of the Spirit.

You can choose the station you want to listen to. And you can tune away from or ignore what you don’t want to hear. What you can’t do is turn off the receiver.

Living Legacy Awards Brunch Collins Chapel Connectional Hospital Submitted By: Mrs. Juliet Waddell Pittman First Episcopal District CME Church Bishop Henry M. Williamson, Presiding Prelate

The Living Legacy Awards program for Collins Chapel Connectional Hospital was held on March 14, 2020, at the Esplanade Banquet & Conference Center in Cordova, Tennessee, and saluted the 80-plus-year-old members of the First Episcopal District. The highlight of the program was the recognition of the honorees who have given outstanding service in their local church in the three regions and the six districts.

Mrs. Virgie L. Phillips and Mr. Peter Faison were the honorees from the East District Arkansas Region.

Mrs. Virgie Lee Gant Phillips is the Arkansas Region Missionary President and a life-long member of Pettis Memorial CME Church. A graduate of Lane College, and has graduate degrees from Fisk University and ASU in Jonesboro, AR. She is a retired teacher. Mrs. Phillips is active, locally in all Ministries of the church. She is a choir member and the E. A. Burden Women’s Bible Class teacher. Very active in the community, she is the 25th Past President of the Arkansas Association of Colored Women’s Club; Chairman of Lake View Area Clinic Board; Vice President of the Ladies Fire Auxiliary; Past President of Mu Chi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority; Secretary of the Phillips County Retired Teachers; Secretary of the Nancy Proffitt Federated Club and a Golden Soror and Life Member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Mrs. Phillips and her husband, Leon A. Phillips, Jr., reside in Lake View, AR. She is the mother of two sons, Dr. Leon A. Phillips, III, and the late Dr. Fredrick S. Phillips, and has two grandsons, Leon, IV and Andrew Corte, Mr. Peter G. Faison is a member of Bullock Temple CME Church and serves as a Steward. He has also served at the statistician for the Arkansas Region. Mr. Faison is a graduate of Arkansas AM&N College; he attended graduate school at the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville and received the Master of Arts in Education Degree from TN A&I State in Nashville, TN. He also studied at the University of Connecticut-Storrs and the University of Arizona-Tucson. He served as principal of Carver Pine Elementary in North Little Rock, AR; at Immanuel High in Almyra; at Central High in Lake Village, AR; and as Superintendent of the East Side Special School District of Menifee. He is a 33rd Degree Mason and Noble of the Mystic Shrine and is a past General Conference Grand Joshua of the Heroines of Jericho of the United States and the Bahamas. He is married to Othello Evelyn Owington and they have five adult children all who have college degrees with two having master’s degrees.

Mrs. Estella Fields and Mr. Nathaniel Biddle were the honorees from the West District Arkansas Region.

Mrs. Estella Fields is a member of the Pleasant Home CME Church in Emerson, Arkansas since 1997. She is married to Earlie Fields and they are the parents of seventeen children. She has seen several pastors in 97 years; at the present her pastor is the Reverend Kenneth Smith, Sr. and her first lady, Mrs. Vera Smith. Her ministry includes being a Stewardess, Missionary and Usher. She has served faithfully as a delegate to many Annual Conferences since 2003. Sister Estella is known to give good and sound counseling to all. She still continues to dress as though she is not 4

her age. She loves to sing and pray when asked and is an inspiration to all that come into her presence. Note: Mrs. Fields went from labor to reward this past August. She was ninety-eight years young.

Mr. Nathaniel Biddle is a member of the Walker Memorial CME Church in Texarkana, Arkansas. His current pastor is Reverend and Presiding Elder Don White, Sr. and first lady Lynn White. Brother Biddle served for 54 years under the leadership of Reverend Sneed (pastor). He was married to Vera Biddle (deceased) they have six children (one deceased). His ministry includes serving twelve years as a Steward; fourteen years as a Trustee; ten years as an Usher and eight years as Church Treasurer. He was also appointed ‘Church Advisor’ by the former pastor because of his love and experiences with church matters. He makes guidelines of the CME Church Discipline.

Mrs. Eleanor Caruthers and Mr. William B. Carter, Sr., were the honorees from the East Tennessee Region Southeast District.

Mrs. Eleanor Caruthers is a member of Williamson Chapel CME Church, in Old Hickory, TN, where the Rev. Dr. Lynn Hargrow, Sr. is the pastor. She was born July, 11, 1933, to the late Delmas and Leanna Jackson, and was raised in Wilson County where she continues to reside. Mrs. Caruthers was married to the late Tommy L. Caruthers for almost 50 years. She is the mother of eight children, five daughters, Darlene, Jenalle, Rita, Charlotte, Frederica and Kimberly; and two sons, Dennis and Alan. She has 20 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Mrs. Caruthers worked as a Nurse Technician for over 30 years prior to retiring at Skyline Hospital formerly, Nashville Memorial Hospital. She has given eighty years of service to Williamson Chapel. The main organizations where she has served at her local church are the Sunday school (teacher), Choir, Women’s Missionary Society and the Stewardess Board. Mrs. Caruthers served as president of the Stewardess Board for more than forty years. She was very active on the district level serving as the South East District Stewardess President for 5 years and also served as the Regional Vice President of the Stewardess Board.

Mr. William B. Carter, Sr., is a member of Bakers Chapel, Goodlettsville, TN, where the Rev. Woodrow Harris, Jr. is the pastor. He was born on May 1, 1937 to the parents Woodrow Wilson Carter and Lorena Carter in Stonewall, a city in Smith County, Tennessee. Stonewall is near Carthage, Tennessee. Mr. Carter graduated from Wilson County High School in 1956. And he graduated in 1966, from Tennessee State University, in Nashville, Tennessee, with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering. Mr. Carter met Rebecca Mingo at Tennessee State University and they married in 1956. He and Rebecca have four children, two boys and two girls. It is certainly noteworthy to say that all four of their children are preachers called by God to proclaim His word. His wife Rebecca is deceased. Mr. Carter was employed by the Army Corps of Engineering. He was part of the Natural Resources Management Operational Division where he retired from in 1995. He has given sixty plus years of service to Bakers Chapel. At Bakers Chapel he is Chairperson of the Board of Stewards and a member of the Male Chorus. He is a member of the Board of Finance for the Southeast District and the Board of Finance for the East TN Region.

Mrs. Pandora Thomas Flake and Rev. Sammie Lee Hankins, were the honorees from the East Tennessee Region Southwest District.

Continued from previous page Mrs. Pandora Thomas Flake is a member (since the age of 12) of Phillips Chapel CME Church in Milan, TN. She was president of the Epworth South League (now known as the Christian Youth Fellowship). As a young adult she was a youth Sunday school teacher and secretary of the church. In later years she served as president and vice president of the Stewardess and benevolent fund Treasurer. She has also served as President of the Brownsville-Dyersburg District Stewardess; President and Secretary of the Massey Singers; President of the South West District Board of Stewardess and President of the East TN Stewardess. She has also participated in community endeavors which include being the President of the GCTS Band Parent Club, Vice President of the Milan High School Band Parent Club and a member of the City of Milan’s planning committee.

Mrs. Flake graduated from Gibson County Training School and was salutatorian of her class. She was married to James Flake (deceased) for 63 years and has 5 children; 6 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and 3 great-greatgrandchildren.

Rev. Sammie Lee Hankins is a retired CME Minister who served his entire ministry in Tennessee. Upon completion of his academic training at the Gibson County Training School in Gibson, TN he enlisted in the United States Army. He served for fourteen years and was honorably discharged. Rev. Hankins was married to Lenora Bardwell until her passing and they had two daughters, Sandra Hankins and Felicia Hankins Harrington. Rev. Hankins also had a son, the late Charles Elliott. After the passing of Mrs. Lenora Hankins, Rev. Hankins married Dorothy Cox and she brought two children to the marriage, Kevin Newman and Constance Artis. Rev. Hankins has six beautiful and talented grandchildren. Rev. Hankins received his first appointment in 1978, and spread the word of God for many years. He was elected to the General Conference as a Clergy delegate and attended the conferences in Birmingham, Alabama and Memphis, Tennessee.

Ms. Gusseye M. Sweet and Mr. Floyd Franklin are the honorees from the West Tennessee Region Northeast District.

Ms. Gusseye M. Sweet has been a member of Mt. Olive Cathedral CME Church for over 80 years, joining under the late Rev. W. A. Johnson. During her long membership, she has been involved in many aspects of the church. In the past she has been the Secretary, Business Manager, Financial Secretary, and Recording Steward. Ms. Sweet is currently a member of the Missionary Society, the Steward Board, and the Sassy Seniors. She has not only served Mt. Olive well, she has also served the CME Church on the local, district, and national level, starting in 1987. Her very first paying position with the CME Church was at the Colored Methodist Center on Georgia Avenue (which was two doors down from Mt. Olive’s former location). Ms. Sweet retired from Universal Life Insurance Company after working for 40 years for the President in Mortgages, Loans & Investments. Her only son passed in 2008, but she still has her grandchildren, nieces, nephews, godsons, church family and friends surrounding her with love and respect.

Mr. Floyd Franklin joined New Zion CME Church, in Moscow, TN, at the age of 12. Mr. Franklin, 93 years old, is a life-long resident of Fayette County, Tennessee.

He has been a champion of Civil Rights his entire life. He has fought for equality in voting, education and employment for people of color. He went on to become one of the organizing members of the Fayette County Civic and Welfare League that fought and achieved the rights for Blacks to register and vote in Fayette County, Tennessee.

School in 1965. In that case, Franklin and his wife led the charge for African-Americans to be hired at the first factory, Troxel Manufacturing, located in Fayette County. Prior to that time, no African-American had worked at the company. Mr. Franklin and his wife, Dorothy having been married for 65 years and have seven children (five currently living). As a devoted member of New Zion, he currently serves as Chairman of the Steward Board, Member of the Trustee Board, former Sunday School Superintendent and Member of the Male Chorus.

Ms. Velma Lois Jones and Mr. Robert L. Hunt are the honorees from West Tennessee Region Northwest District.

Ms. Velma Lois Jones is a graduate of Manassas High School and received her Bachelors of Education Degree from Lemoyne College both located in Memphis, TN. Her teaching career spanned fifty years. Ms. Jones served one year as president of the Memphis Education Association and six years as president of the TN Education Association. She was passionate about her career and was just as passionate about racial injustice. Ms. Jones never missed a march and when the sanitation strike took place in 1968, she was instrumental in bringing Dr. Martin Luther King to Memphis.

In 1971 she became the first woman president of the NAACP, where she served four years. In tribute, President Obama invited Ms. Jones and five other special senior citizens to visit the White House to honor as unsung heroes. Ms. Jones is a member of Trinity CME Church, in Memphis, TN, and very active with the Missionaries at the Local, District, Region and the Council levels of the Women’s Missionary Society. She is the Immediate Past Parliamentarian of the Council.

She is a life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and a past Graduate Chapter President and a Past Regional Director.

Mr. Robert L. Hunt is a member of St. James CME Church, in Millington, TN, where his pastor is Rev. Charlie W. Coleman, III. He graduated as Valedictorian from Batesville Colored High School. He then joined the United States Navy and retired with twenty years of service. Mr. Hunt was asked to continue working as a civilian.

In addition to the Navy, he worked and retired from JC Penney and Sears automotive departments. Mr. Hunt is a member of the Millington Kiwanis Club and serves on the board for the Millington Housing Authority. He has faithfully served as a Steward for over forty years and is also the Sunday school Superintendent, the Local Lay Leader, and sings baritone with the Mass Choir and the Male Chorus. Mr. Hunt has been married to Gladys Morgan Hunt for fifty-six years and is the father of three children, two sons, Rev. Oree Hunt (Sonya), Pastor of Plummer Grove CME Church, Covington, TN and Derrick (Cynthia) Hunt and one daughter Cynthia Hunt Bardwell (Andre’). He has eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Mrs. Veora Brown Harris, served as the chairperson of the brunch and led the committee in creating the program as well as the fund raising effort. Congratulations on a job well done!

“From Where I Sit …”

An Important Resolution For 2021!

Happy New Year to you and yours!!! A long-held practice has been the making of New Year’s resolutions. It is defined by Wikipedia as when “… a person resolves to continue good practices, change an undesired trait or behavior, … accomplish a personal goal, or otherwise improve their life.” In the spirit of that tradition, I am drawing on my December 2015 article that focused on our posting of an electronic copy of the Summary Plan Description (SPD) of the CME Retirement Plan.

Although that article was specifically intended to encourage potential participants to review the Plan prior to enrollment, this article encourages participants to make a New Year’s resolution to review the SPD and to become re-familiarized with all its benefits.

This is important because your family is depending on you to apprise them of any benefits they may need to understand and to expect. Most are familiar with the retirement accumulations, but also included in this Plan and explained in the SPD is term life insurance on the participant, term life insurance on the participant’s spouse, disability insurance, and accidental death and dismemberment benefits, among others. All of this can be found in the SPD located on the Personnel Services webpage of the CME Church website.

The CME Retirement Plan was established in 1969 and has grown to be the largest single investment area of our church. With over 1,100 current participants, at the writing of this article, the assets of the Plan total over $32,000,000.

As previously stated in earlier articles, the CME Retirement Plan has been approved by the Internal Revenue Service and as pertinent changes in retirement laws are enacted or amendments to the Plan are proposed, subsequent IRS approval will be obtained. The Plan is governed by a 13-member Board of Trustees led by the Chair of the Board and the General Secretary as prescribed by the Discipline of the Church. Specific areas of the Plan are guided by third party administrators and the Plan is audited annually by an independent auditor. Getting Back To Basics as “We Envision Our Way Forward Taking Care of God's Business” Growing the Church During A Pandemic Through Follow-up A couple of months ago we looked at prayer to lay the foundation for growing the church during a pandemic. I also suggested that the pastor and laity develop technology teams. Last month we looked at radical hospitality. I would now like for us to look at the effect of follow-up during the pandemic.

Follow-up should not continue to be the lack of unawareness to finish a task. The leader who understands the process of follow-up realizes the importance of people, process, and procedure.

Some may ask why follow-up is important while others do not see the relevance. However, it provides feedback based upon the action we have taken. For the local church follow-up can help us grow. Have you ever asked someone to perform a task and trusted them to do it only to find out that what you were seeking did not get done or was half done? Miscommunication and misinformation lead to mishaps and non-effectiveness.

A component of Church growth is layered in follow-up. For instance, someone visits your church and is excited about the ministries at the church. You’re able to capture contact information to follow-up with them about their visit. Your church sends them a letter, e-mail or text celebrating their presence in worship. But the following week you do not see them at the Park and Praise drive-in worship. You wonder what happened, but you left it there as just a wonder. No one reached out to them again even though you had delivered a good word from the Lord, worship was outstanding, and they had been blown away by radical hospitality. All this may be true, but the church is not on point with follow up and follow through. So, they had an inspiring one-time experience and moved on.

Consider that it may take anywhere between 4-8 touches (call, text, card, worship, Bible study, prayer meeting, etc.…) for someone to unite with a congregation. We cannot leave it up to chance. There is a saying, “Anybody could have done it, but nobody did it. Somebody was upset about that because it was everybody's job. Everybody thought that anybody could do it, but nobody realized that everybody would not do it. It ended up that everybody blamed somebody when nobody did what anybody could have done.”

There are those who believe that Nike came up with the “Just Do It” slogan. But Mary the mother of Jesus said to the disciples in John 2:5, “Do whatever he tells you”. If we want the Lord’s church to grow, then we need to provide follow-up. Proper follow-up involves both congregational and individual effort. We cannot minimize what is not seen with follow-up. We must make it a vital part of our ministry because the results are monumental. Therefore, to bring others into an encounter with Jesus we must pray, develop teams, practice radical hospitality, AND follow-up.

"Prayer Changes Things”:

A Millennial Chaplain’s Perspective in the Age of COVID19” Submitted by Rose Archer

There were three words that almost held as much sacred imagination as the Trinity itself. Simple, but full of possibility, the phrase, “Prayer changes things,” has resonated since my childhood.

As a Healthcare Chaplain, I learned how to integrate these words into my ministry, but to also create a healthy “social distance” from them. Today, we cannot get far without hearing the term, social distance. It’s the reminder that while we may cherish time with loved ones, physical closeness can inadvertently create unnecessary harm. During my training, I discovered that the words, “prayer changes things,” can also have the unintended effect of doing more harm than good, particularly in the medical context where many patients battle critical illness. When you sit with a mother who lost her two-week old baby, or the young man whose fiancé has lost all brain activity, you realize that the phrase “prayer changes things” can be an irresponsible attempt to wash over their pain and grief.

Yet, something happened when COVID-19 became a present reality. As the Night Chaplain, I spend time caring for staff who feel overworked, striving just to make it to the end of another shift. As many are asked to stay home, healthcare workers across the nation drive to work through empty streets just to find full units, limited resources, and an unpredictable future. I quickly discovered that during a time of crisis, the temptation to try something new is not always the best solution. It is the time to dig deep and trust what you know, lean into what has been tested and proven to be a solid foundation. Even with patients, my task is to encourage deeper self-awareness, as they engage the coping skills, values, and beliefs they’ve possessed all along. To care for the staff and patients during this pandemic, I realized we would need to fully tap into the known in order to effectively brace ourselves for the unknown.

It started with prayer. On several of our units, we devote a time for prayer where staff can share their “praise reports” as well as their challenges. In those few moments, we pray, laugh, share appreciation, and agree to do it all again tomorrow. As the number of cases of COVID-19 increased throughout the country, the unexpected happened. Our prayer circles dramatically increased. Colleagues who had never participated in the past, suddenly become fully invested. This is not to suggest prayer is the only answer. I’ve also found myself pulled into vacant rooms with weeping colleagues who can no longer remain composed because they have personally lost someone amid this unprecedented crisis. They may not want prayer, but the availability to see and honor their vulnerability still holds sacred meaning.

To be a Chaplain in the age of COVID-19 is to remember that these three words are not just spiritual jargon, but they are an ethic; a way of approaching life and ministry. The vivid description of the Holy Spirit in ancient texts reveals that prayer isn’t solely communicated through language, but also through movement, moans, silence, mindfulness, and courageous action. As healthcare workers move into unknown territory, they embody the prayers we are each praying at home, hoping this pandemic will soon end. As Chaplains, we walk beside them in this task, holding the truth of our past as a tangible pathway for our future: Change shall come as we commune with the Divine.

MINISTERS’ SPOUSES, WIDOWS, & WIDOWERS DEPARTMENT “STEPPING INTO 2021 WITH A GRATEFUL HEART” Submitted by Audrey Johnson Who knew 2020 would be such a tumultuous year?

We have had wildfires that have destroyed whole neighborhoods and scarred national parks; a hurricane season for the record books; unchecked police brutality; Black Lives Matter protests across the nation; unprecedented crime and unemployment rates; endured a US President that tried to hold the United States government hostage; and watched the Coronavirus pandemic send the world into economic and health crisis mode.

But we survived to tell the stories of a loving and mighty God. God has taken care of us! Psalm 91:4 says, “He will cover you with his wings; you will be safe in his care; his faithfulness will protect and defend you.” (Good News Translation) Church pastors, officers, and ministers’ spouses are learning to use new technologies and creative strategies to reach their parishioners and give hope to those who are struggling with loneliness and grief. Charitable and national Pan-Hellenic Council organizations are stepping up to provide food, tutoring, and personal protective equipment (PPE). Schools are offering computer resources to continue educating our children. Local governments are providing funding to help families pay utilities and rent this winter, expanding hospital capacity, and securing PPE for health care workers and first responders. We defied the odds and elected a new President and the first female African American Vice-President who seek to heal the wounds of a divided nation. Still there is more work to be done on every front.

The New Year is a time of hope and provides another opportunity to answer the call to be the hands, feet, and voice of God. We must not hide in fear or sit back in apathy. We must use our talents, time, and treasures to support projects that matter and engage our sphere of influence to support the greater good. It still takes a village to raise a child and protect our extended family units. We can accomplish more as we keep God first and work with a grateful heart.

Bank of America Awards Technology Grant to Paine College New Hybrid Interactive SMART Classroom on the Horizon

Paine College's innovative efforts to support advanced learning received additional support today with a grant from Bank of America. Paine College, a private historically Black College has a 139-year history of creating opportunities and developing a culture of success for its students.

During the recent pandemic, Paine College had to change how it delivered instruction in the classroom, by utilizing Blackboard Collaborate for virtual instruction. This grant will allow the College to integrate new Hybrid Interactive SMART technology with Blackboard Collaborate to produce a more stimulating and engaging learning experience that will impact retention. The Hybrid Interactive SMART (Hi-SMART) Classroom will offer high quality audio and video from SMART camera technology, allowing professors to see their entire class in detail. Professors will be able to read facial cues and assess student engagement. This technology infrastructure will also be utilized for virtual recruitment, tutoring, career counseling and development.

"We are pleased to be working with Bank of America to facilitate technology that will heighten instruction and student experiences in the classroom," said Dr. Cheryl Evans Jones, President of Paine College. "The first of its kind at Paine, the Hi-SMART Classroom will help to improve student retention and success."

The $65,000 grant is part of the bank's $1 billion, four-year commitment of additional support to help local communities address economic and racial inequality accelerated by the pandemic.

"Paine College is instrumental for workforce development efforts in the Augusta community," said Ora Parish, Augusta market president for Bank of America. "Our partnership will help expand their educational support resources for job training and career success."

"As students become more technologically savvy, it will become easier for them to embrace instruction delivered through Hi-SMART technology. This technology will also advance curriculum, facilitate faculty development, and create opportunities for students to explore," commented Helene Carter, VP of Institutional Advancement.

Dr. James Brown: Pastoral Memories of a Friend and Member A Salute to the Great, Legendary ‘Godfather of Soul’ Submitted by Rev. Larry Fryer

As a child growing up with 19 other siblings, I learned the importance of sharing early. I enjoyed watching television, and to see my favorite program (the Ed Sullivan Show) was a privilege I did not take for granted. I would see my favorite entertainers, Mahalia Jackson and James Brown, perform live on his show. Like most of us, I was mesmerized by Mr. Brown’s gyrations, quick dance moves and splits, as much as his singing vocals.

Those childhood memories stayed with me all through my undergraduate years at Paine College and later in graduate school at Phillips School of Theology (ITC).

Therefore, when the late Bishop Joseph C. Coles, Jr. appointed me to serve as the pastor of Trinity CME Church in Augusta, Georgia, I was no stranger to Augusta or to Mr. James Brown. But it was my sheer delight one evening at dinner with friends in a local restaurant to see him sitting at a table across from us. Not wanting to disturb him while he was dining, I asked the waitress to kindly hand him my business card on which I simply wrote, “YOU ARE LOVED.” Those three words were the beginning of a lifelong friendship which would impact both of us.

Shortly thereafter, James Brown along with his wife, Adrienne, began attending services at Trinity CME. The Sunday he joined the church, Mr. Brown came to the piano and began to sing, “God has smiled on me,” and we were all in awe as he worshipped with such spirit and resolve. Thereafter, no one was more generous than he was, as he looked for ways in which he could be a blessing to his pastor and his church family. I could name numerous ministries, projects and people who benefited directly from his benevolence, often anonymously. The Brown’s attended services often, and James could be heard shouting "Amen" during the preaching, and clapping and rejoicing in song along with the choir.

As his pastor, I had the pleasure of accompanying him as he traveled locally and abroad. On one occasion, he asked me to [join him in a visit to] his ailing father ... and to bring him communion at the “Blue Goose” – a residence for veterans. I enjoy the opportunity to minister to the spiritual needs of my members and their families, and Mr. Brown was so appreciative whenever I did. As our friendship grew closer, he would ask me to join him and his family and friends at Christmas and other social occasions, where I met Jerry Butler, The Temptations, Pat Boone, MC Hammer, Chaka Khan, and many others ... most notably, Michael Jackson.

I was privileged to accompany Mr. Brown as he traveled overseas, as well as various places here in the United States. On many occasions as we traveled, Mr. Brown saw the impoverished condition of people and revealed his sincere desire to help people everywhere. He remarked, "Rev. Fryer, I want to help feed the hungry and give toys to children at Christmas." He went on to ask me, "What Scripture could I use for this?" I told him, "Matthew 25:31-36, 40." He replied, "Read it to me." So, I did, and when I finished, he shouted, "Rev. Fryer, that's it!!!"

Throughout his many years of community service, sponsorship and support, he gave without hesitation or preconditions. When I served as the Executive Director of the New Hope Community Center in Augusta, he wanted to do whatever he could to improve and educate young boys and girls. He contributed 25 new computers, helping us to open and organize the James Brown Computer Learning Center in his honor.

Like all of us, James Brown was a multi-faceted, as well as a multi-talented, person. There was a side of Mr. Brown many do not know as well as I do. That was his spiritual side. James Brown loved the Lord. He gave his personal life to Jesus in my office, and we were both crying as he leaned on my shoulder, recalling the struggles and blessings in his own life and the lives of his children and others. So, when he would sing "God Is So Good” or "Walk Around Heaven All Day" and such, believe me, Mr. Brown was singing from the depths of 22

Submissions his very soul and spirit. James Brown loved the Lord. When he called and asked me to come and pray for his dying daughter, Mr. Brown personally knew the power of prayer and God’s Love.

Well, there is no limit to what I could say and know about Dr. James Brown. Let me just say this. I have met few like him - someone who used his talents, gifts, and resources to help improve and change the world we live in. He was the recipient of many awards and honors. In fact, Paine College awarded him an honorary doctorate posthumously in 2006; I was there. He spoke several languages fluently and has statues, paintings, buildings, and streets named after him. But what the “Godfather of Soul” would probably want you to know and remember most about him was he never forgot his own impoverished roots and tried to give back to “the least of these.”

As sickness plagued him, I prayed with and for him many times until sadly, on Christmas Day, the 25th of December 2006, he died.

I deeply miss my friend, and I proudly salute him. Mr. James Brown, a Christian, a great CME, a talented legend among men, a good and gracious man, and a child of God. Now that ROCKS!

St. James, Hattiesburg, Observes Connectional Lay Day Submitted by Betty B. Hill Local Lay President

On Sunday, October 11, 2020, the congregation at St. James CME Church, Hattiesburg, Mississippi, celebrated the Connectional Lay Day Observation virtually. The speaker for the occasion was Rev. Dr. Sonnie Washington. Dr. Washington is a re­tired pastor who has served in all the Districts in the Mississippi South Region. He now worships with us at St. James CME Church, where Rev. Benjamin Barnes is the pastor.

Dr. Washington's text came from Matthew 6:15-18. His subject was, "It's Praying Time." Dr. Washington told the listeners that we all profess to believe in prayer, but most of us have trouble praying. He said prayer should be the easiest of the spiritual disciplines to practice, and maybe that is why one of the first things Jesus did with His disciples was to teach them to pray. In order to achieve the lay theme, Dr. Washington encouraged the listeners to pray to God with the reverence He deserves.

We were happy and honored to have with us on line, Bro. Otho Barnes, Regional Lay President; Bro. Clarence Magee, Gloster/Hattiesburg District Lay President; Dr. Frances Washington, Gloster/Hattiesburg District Ministers' Spouses past President; and many members and friends. A silent prayer was said in memory of Sister Dorothy Chambers and Brother Thomas Toney who have transitioned from life to death.

Pastor Barnes thanked the guests and members for their participation on the program. Sis­ter Betty B. Hill, Local Lay President, thanked the participants on the program, al­so. Sister Hill gave a special shout-out to Sister Deborah Martin for her special ser­vices behind the scenes. A donation was collected for the GrahamWebb-Kennedy scholarship fund. The Lay Program was highly successful, and everyone enjoyed worshiping God through the virtual process.

Helm Chapel Fourth Generation Stewardess Crowned Homecoming Queen Submitted by Katina Duren

Ms. Tancy Duren of Helm Chapel CME Church in Carrollton, Mississippi, was crowned Homecoming Queen for the 2020 -2021 academic year at J. Z. George High School. Tancy is the daughter of Travis and Katina Duren, the granddaughter of the late Louis and Nancy Trotter, and great-granddaughter of the late Allen and Josephine Wadlington.

Tancy is a senior honor student, a cheerleader, and a member of the Beta Club at J. Z. George High School. She enjoys traveling, dancing and learning new things. At Helm Chapel, she is a member of the Choir, the Youth and Young Adults, and Stewardess Board under the pastoral leadership of Rev. Dr. William Dyson.

Her goal is to become a nurse anesthetist.

After graduation, she plans to attend Holmes Community College, then to continue her education at Mississippi University for Women. We pray that God will continue to bless her and strengthen her faith.

Virtual Board of Christian Education & Formation Roundtable Submitted by Sallie H. Ledbetter Local Director, Board of Christian Education and Formation

The Board of Christian Education and Formation of St. John CME Church in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, held a virtual seminar on Saturday, September 19, 2020, at 6:00PM. The theme for the seminar was “Connecting The Parts of Adult Ministry.”

The Mistress of Ceremony was Mrs. Adrienne Speas, Board of Christian Education and Formation Adult Division Chairperson (on the local level) and Carolina Region Missionary President. The Judgement by Kayce Grogan-Wallace was shared via Spotify and was followed by prayer from Exhorter Lillian Thompson. Young Adult Lyric Cotton of St. John CME Church shared her Liturgical dance performed at the Virtual Annual Conference for the Missionary Society in August 2020.

The speakers for the roundtable were Mr. Michael & Dr. Debra Lowe and Mr. James & Mrs. Theresa Muldrow.

The first speakers were Mr. Michael & Dr. Debra Lowe. Mr. Michael Lowe is a Career Development Coordinator for Guilford County Schools, a mentor for Men of Valor and Excellence, advisor and co-facilitator for Carolina Region Annual Conference Youth Board, vice-chairperson of the Steward Board, Chairperson of the Men’s Feeding Program, and a member of the Male Chorus & Men’s Usher Board at Williams Memorial CME Church. Recently retired Dr. Debra Lowe is a former Special Populations Coordinator with Guilford County Schools. She is a member of Williams Memorial CME Church where she serves on the Board of Christian Education and Formation, Missionary Society, and CIT (Communications and Information Technology) Board. Dr. Lowe is Director of the Carolina Region Board of Christian Education and Formation and Board of Christian Education and Formation Director Representative for the Seventh Episcopal District of the CME Church. Mr. Michael and Dr. Debra Lowe are passionate about youth realizing their full potential despite adversities in their lives and seeing them become successful.

The Lowes’ presented Understanding Adult Ministry. They emphasized A New Model of Adult Ministry.

Through PowerPoint, important ideas and suggestions were shared. They stated that Church leaders “must recognize the changing nature of our surrounding.” Wants, needs and interests have changed and therefore new opportunities exist for Adult Ministry. “Our thinking about Adult Ministry has to change.” We need to know our audience and church population. “By 2030, 20% will be 65-outnumbering children and youth.” As leaders we must try to reach all people and encourage them in Christian faith. Our work is outside the church, and we must equip workers to go outside the church as Christian disciples. We must be aware of lifestyle changes. Our society is aging, the average age in the church is higher and there is aging in the church. “Church leaders need to focus on ministering to each season of adulthood.”

Planning for Adult Ministry needs focus on life transitions that adults experience. It’s time to think creatively about starting new ministries and revising other ministries. “Most congregations have nine decades of life experiences. . .” Do we have ministries for empty nesters, singles, mature adults or grandparents caring for Continued on next page January 2021 • The Christian Index

Thinking about ministering to each season of adulthood has its rewards of evaluating its ministries from a different perspective and might lead to spiritually connected ministries. Adults are growing and developing, therefore “Churches should shift out of the traditional educational approach of formation,” and “Consider networked approach that focuses on formation, life experience, on-and off church campus resourcing.” Some suggested ways to reach adult populations are to; use models that share experiences good or bad, include interaction, think smaller and wider, and offer small group setting events.

Adults are happiest when active. Some suggested Adult ministries were holding “seminars on myths and realities of aging, workshops on positive and negative aspects of growing older, and call Senior ministry something other than older or senior.” These were a few ideas and suggestions presented by Mr. Michael and Dr. Debra Lowe. Their hope is that this model of Adult Ministry will be of help in ministering to each season of adulthood.

The next speakers were Mr. James and Mrs. Theresa Muldrow. Mr. James Muldrow is a retired state auditor.

He is the owner of AGA Laundry Service, LLC. He has served as Trustee Chair at Cleaves Memorial CME in Columbia, SC, the Charleston-Columbia District Trustee Chairperson, and a member of the Trustee Board of the Carolina Region. Mr. Muldrow has established The Brilliant R.O.S.E. Foundation which strives to find and share resources with young people to enable them to achieve a higher education. He loves writing and being actively involved in his church, district, and community. He graduated from Benedict College where he majored in Economics. Mrs. Theresa Muldrow graduated from Benedict College where she majored in Business Education and pledged Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority. She received her Master’s Degree from the University of South Carolina. Mrs. Muldrow has served as a local Missionary President, Zone One Missionary Leader, District Missionary secretary of the Charleston-Columbia District, College Fair Coordinator and Nominating Chairperson for the Carolina Region. She is a retired educator, is her church organist, church secretary, and local Lay Council secretary. The Muldrow’s have been blessed with three wonderful children; Adrienne, Gordon, and Ashleigh. They love to travel and enjoy their ministry of sharing their amateur photography with others.

The Muldrow’s presented, “A New Initiative: Don’t Lose With Social Security.” Mr. Muldrow stated that his number one question when he got his first job was, “How much and when?” But there are more important questions that we should want to know answers to like: Will Social Security cover expenses fully after retirement? Who can receive Social Security? How much will I receive? Are you receiving your full benefits?

Can your spouse receive benefits from your Social Security? What are some types of Social Security? Who pays for Social Security? Will you pay taxes on your Social Security? What can you do to improve your Social Security?

These questions were followed by some history on caring for the elderly. Some societies valued and respected the elderly and their contributions, while other societies cast the elderly aside. It was known that the elderly have always contributed to our society whether it was by sharing knowledge and wisdom or working the fields.

In the industrial age people moved from working on farms to working in factories. Factories had long working hours (twelve hours a day and seven days a week) and little pay. It was dangerous work with no supplement and a difficult time for the elderly. This lead to President Franklin D. Roosevelt signing into law “The Social Security Act of 1935” on August 14, 1935.

Social Security is a saving plan and a supplement to your other savings and investments. It is strongly suggested that you have some other source of a retirement plan such as 401K, IRA, and stocks and bonds. The 28

Submissions amount of your retirement is determined by your age at the time of retirement, and the average of the highest 35 years of income. It’s best to check your earnings record every year to make sure that it’s correct and up to date. A detailed video was shared stating why this should be done annually. Next, the different types of Social Security was shared: Retirement Benefits, Disability Benefits, Supplemental Security Income Benefits, and Survivors Benefits.

Mrs. Jewel Golden-Wright shared her experiences with Social Security. She shared how her husband received Disability Benefits. She noted that you are allowed to work while receiving this benefit with limitations and penalties if you exceed a certain limit. At age of 66, Mrs. Golden-Wright elected to receive full Retirement Benefits. The last type of Social Security shared by Mrs. Golden-Wright was Survivors Benefits. She stated that because her income was higher than her spouse she only received the one time death benefit of $255.00.

So if one spouse dies, the federal government allows one Social Security Benefit and the surviving spouse will receive only one income from Social Security. With this in mind the Muldrows have a new initiative for Social Security Spousal Survivors. Some other information shared was that once you start receiving Social Security it can change and usually it goes up. Recipients usually get a raise. The longer you wait to retire, the more Social Security Benefit you will receive. “Living mostly on Social Security alone can be difficult but it can be done.” Young working adults are encouraged to start saving for retirement NOW! Remember you may have to pay taxes on your Social Security Benefits, always be suspicious if you get a call asking for your Social Security number, and be aware of scams and or scammers.

“Connecting The Parts of Adult Ministry” through “Understanding Adult Ministry” by Mr. James & Dr. Debra Lowe and “Don’t Lose With Social Security” by Mr. James & Theresa Muldrow was an informative, well planned, spirit lead virtual seminar. The presenters were phenomenal and attendance was great. Virtually we even reached Japan with Mr. & Mrs. Muldrow’s daughter, Ashleigh.

The closing prayer was given by Rev. Kennith Johnson, Sr., pastor of Cleaves Memorial CME, Columbia, South Carolina.

News from Mt. Zion Sharon Hill/Darby Township Submitted by Bro. Bruce Benson, Local Lay Leader and Chairman, Board of Stewards

Mt. Zion CME Church Sharon Hill/Darby Township, Pennsylvania under the spiritual pastorate of Rev. Alfred S. Parker, Jr. took advantage of the good weather and celebrated our annual Men’s Day worship service outside! The Theme for our Men’s Day 2020 was, “A Praying Man is a Powerful Man,” and our scripture for the worship experience was, “Be on your guard, stand firm in the faith, be courageous, be strong,” 1 Corinthians 16:13. Our speaker for the worship experience was none other than our very own pastor, Rev. Alfred S. Parker, Jr. The Men of Valor Fellowship Choir, under the direction of Rev. Rev. Parker delivering his sermon.

Rebecca Collins Rawls, led the congregation in song; and, under the strict guidance of our medical director, social distancing for the Men's Day 2020 Theme singing and service was a must and enforced!

Mt. Zion also sponsored for the third year in a row its annual Thanksgiving Day Dinner. Due to the pandemic and social distancing, this year the dinner was served as pack-n-go! The Lay Ministry is the lead ministry that sponsors the Thanksgiving Day dinner. This year we were blessed to serve 85 families. The list included members of the church and those in our immediate community that stretched form Chester to Philadelphia. We were blessed to have most of the food donated and prepared by our own members. The many people that were fed and took part were so very thankful and appreciated the idea of having a full, delicious meal delivered to their doorstep. We thank God for this ministry and pray that it will continue.

Condolences: Mt. Zion suffered the loss of three members within two weeks. Bro. Jack Graham and his mother, Sis. Maude Graham and Sis. Mary Washington. Bro. Jack was a member of the Bible Study Group, a valued Trustee, member of the Men of Valor Fellowship Choir and served as General Chairman of our Annul Men’s Day celebration. His mother, Sis. Maude Graham also served the church as a Missionary and member of the Board of Stewardess. We also mourn the loss of Sis. Mary Washington who was a pillar of Mt. Zion. (Editor's note: (Sis. Washington's obituary appears on page 44 of this issue.)

Bethel, Sarasota, Missionary Society Conducts Monthly Outreach Submitted by Cynthia Howard

The Women’s Missionary Society of Bethel CME Church in Sarasota, Florida, sponsored a community outreach on Friday, October 16, 2020. The Missionaries prepared a delicious pre-game meal for the Booker High School Tornadoes boys football team, coaches and staff at the homecoming and seniors night game. Head Coach Baraka Atkins and the team were grateful for the meal. The Missionaries also patched several of the players’ torn football pants. The team went on to win their football game 59 – 0!

Bethel’s Missionaries have planned several community outreach activities for the year. In August, they presented back-to-school supplies to a local elementary school and hosted a virtual tea celebration for its Fifth Sunday Missionary Service. Sis. Gloria Darville is Missionary president and Rev. Dr. John W. Walker, Jr. is pastor.

The Mississippi/South Region Ushering Ministry of the Fourth Episcopal District (Presiding Prelate is Bishop C. James King Jr.), did not let the COVID-19 pandemic dampen their spirits in celebration of their Annual Connectional Rededication Ushers Program. It was conducted via conference call, which was hosted by the Gloster/Hattiesburg District.

Participation in the program was as follows: Prayer – Don Taylor/Lynch Street CME Church, Scripture – Laquita Brown/Sweetwater CME Church, Welcome – Eunice Jamison/Woodlawn CME Church, Usher’s Prayer – Linda Smith/Zionell CME Church, Introduction of Speaker – Joe McLeod, Solo – Beverly Dixon (4th Episcopal District Administrative Assistant), Guest Speaker – Rev. Johnny Porter/Pastor of Rose Hill CME Church, Columbia, Mississippi, Rededication Ceremony – Rev. Marcus McLaurin, Announcements – Rosetta Hall/Goodwater CME Church, and Words of Thanks – Doris Powell – Greenwood/Jackson District Usher President, Willie Dell Sanders – Columbus/Meridian District Usher President, Joe McLeod -Gloster/Hattiesburg District Usher President, and Patricia A. Anderson – MS/South Region Usher President. Remarks were given by Greenwood/Jackson Presiding Elder Dr. Wayne A. Williams, Columbus/Meridian Presiding Elder Ernest Miller, and Gloster/Hattiesburg District Presiding Elder Eddie Dixon, who also gave the Benediction.

Because we knew, due to COVID-19, we would not meet in person this program year, ushers of the MS/South Region were asked to submit a picture dressed in their uniform. A music video (YouTube - search Ronzajr-Connectional Usher Day 2020) was assembled thanking ushers for their commitment to the Ushering Ministry.

During the celebration, the MS/South Region Ushering Ministry took the opportunity to support two of its own. In April of this year, a tornado tore through the Bassfield, MS community (Gloster/Hattiesburg District), leaving a trail of damage and destruction, with many houses being destroyed. The MS/South Region Ushering Ministry had two ushers who were victims of this tornado. As a way of showing support, monetary gifts were presented to both ushers.

Although the program was a conference call, it was very spirited. We were honored to have in attendance with us on the call, the 4th Episcopal District Usher Vice-President, Queen Martin, and the Connectional Usher President, Diana Winton. Many thanks to the MS/South Region Ushering Ministry, who showed up and showed out with 118 attendees on the line. “To God Be the Glory.”

Hines Missionaries Continue Caring and Sharing Despite COVID-19 Submitted by Sis. Shirley Vaughn Local WMS Immediate Past President

The Women's Missionary Society (WMS) of Hines Memorial Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Albany, Georgia, conducted their annual Caring and Sharing Ministry on November 23, 2020, by providing their local Salvation Army and Rescue Mission a combined donation of over 500 hundred cans of green beans and corn.

Traditionally, the missionaries have provided a noon, pre-Thanksgiving meal to the community, membership, and many sick and shut-in individuals. The pandemic altered the format of the thirty-year-plus ministry, but not their creativity to reach the community, and share in a new format. As the Missionaries planned this year's November ministry under the leadership of current president, Sis. Betty Wilson, it was 32

Submissions decided the normal clothing and small household appliance give-away and food bag give-away would not be included this time.

This is a total church effort each year. Members anxiously await the announcement for the need to bring donations as well as to commit to assisting. On the actual day, our Family Life Center opens the doors to provide all who enter greetings, a mini sermon or meditation, and all the love and sharing of the homemade traditional thanksgiving meal until the last guest is served. Our spiritual shepherd, Dr. Ore L. Spragin, or a designee provides an uplifting message of hope prior to serving the first plate. This year, Sis. Lucy Hazel Dunn contributed a beautiful message, which was duplicated and shared in every box that was packed for delivery to the two agencies.

Several missionaries, Ministry to Men volunteers, and the pastor assisted the missionaries in packing, loading the vehicles, and transporting the donations.

Ironically, many of the individuals who normally attend in person yearly also receive services from both The Salvation Army and the Albany Rescue Mission. Instead of being blessed with one meal on one day, had we been able to have contact with our neighbors, the generous donations were able to feed them for more than one meal.

Sharing Ministry as their longest-standing outreach ministry that both the community and members have made a tradition over the many years. More than just for the meal, this ministry provides fellowship and the opportunity for members and attendees to bring their children and grandchildren into this special day, some of whom have now stepped in for their elderly or deceased parents or grandparents to carry on the work of the missionaries. Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:16-20).

My Brothers and Sisters, GOD has not changed. HIS message remains the same.

As a healthcare provider, COVID-19 reminds me of its existence daily, both professionally and personally. I am not making light of it. My coworkers, my friends, and my family have been affected by COVID-19.

As a servant of the Most High God, I understand the loss many of His Children feel being unable to physically congregate and fellowship. BUT let us not forget our mission. Our country HAS changed. But GOD has NOT changed. OUR mission isn’t on lockdown and never will be. Where there is a will, GOD WILL ALWAYS make a way. While some churches threaten to sue the Government regarding their closures, others have, as GOD has instructed, followed the law of the land.

GOD has provided us with Pandemic Lemonade, created from COVID-19 Lockdown Lemons for servants to come, drink, and share HIS Love.

GOD has taken COVID-19 Lockdown Lemons, squeezed out confinement, added Salvation, Discipleship, Wisdom, and, finally, sweetened the juice with HIS everlasting Love. The resulting masterpiece? Pandemic Lemonade to share with his children, both current and potential, through Zoom, YouTube, Facebook Live, Skype, Go-To-Meeting, Conference Calls, Telephone Calls, and other avenues of communication. This Pandemic Lemonade has been and will be shared with those thousands of miles away, throughout numerous states, and countries. Many pastors report having more visitors and members attending virtual Sunday worship and mid-week services than previously in physical churches. When we resume congregating, it may be wise to continue utilizing virtual worship as a continued enrichment of our traditional services to share ‘The Good News’ and Make Disciples “of all nations.”

In the meantime, feel free to visit West Coast worship services via Zoom, Facebook, YouTube, and Conference Calls.

“QUEEN MARTIN”: A SERVANT LEADER FROM THE HEART! Submitted by Diana Winton, President -Connectional Usher Ministry

“Usher Queen Martin” is the 4th District-Episcopal Vice President-(EVP) of Usher Ministry. She is the leader and role model of all CME Ushers in the 4th Episcopal District. Queen has served over 50-plus years as a Doorkeeper for Christ.

She is also the Mississippi East Region Usher Ministry President. She faithfully attends Mt. Comfort CME Church, Pastor Kenneth Rogers, in the Holly Springs-Oxford District, under Presiding Elder Bobby G. Wilson. There she serves as an active leader of Ushers, as local Church Missionary President, and she works and supports all other Ministries in her Church, District, and Region as she serves others in the love of Christ.

Queen is a role model and servant leader for our Usher Ministry.

Every year the second Sunday in September is Connectional Usher Day and Ushers/Doorkeepers across the CME Zion celebrate Connectional Usher Day with a morning worship service and/or an afternoon program. The Ushers rededicate themselves through a Litany read during a commitment ceremony in which Ushers commit to giving our all to God, and to a worthy and vital Usher ministry.

This year the North-East Mississippi Region celebrated their Region Usher Ministry Rededication Worship Service in the afternoon of September 13, 2020, under the direction and leadership of Sister Queen Martin, via teleconference. The program was spirit-filled, encouraging and well attended. The worship wervice included, prayer

by Patricia Berry, Scripture read by John Knight, a solo that blessed our hearts by Paul McClough, Jr., a warm greeting/welcome from Elton Wells, and the guest speaker was Sister Diana Winton, Connectional Usher President, who spoke on , “A Call to Christian Unity,” Ephesians 4:1-6.

Elder Bobby G. Wilson, Presiding Elder of the Holly Springs-Oxford District, lead all the Ushers online through the CME Usher Litany in a rededication ceremony of love and unity. It was an anointed and blessed program.

Queen, a retired educator, has been married to Lincoln Martin for over 40 years, and they are the proud parents of two sons, Clifford and Phillip Martin. They also own a successful family business, a printing company that is a blessing from God. January 2021 • The Christian Index

Letter of Celebratory Honor from the National Council of Churches on the 150th Anniversary of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church Dear Family in Christ, On behalf of the National Council of Churches, we write to send our sincerest appreciation and utmost honor to you for your 150 years of faithful service and prophetic witness to the Body of Christ. Your forward momentum in taking care of God’s business through ministries of salvation, education and liberation are a blessing to the Kingdom, on Earth as it is in Heaven. May you be abundantly blessed for it.

You were a founding member first of the Federal Council of Churches in 1908, and then the National Council of Churches in 1950. We recall with fondness the memory of Bishop Thomas L. Hoyt, Jr. who served with distinction as the president of the National Council of Churches from 2004-2005. We are proud to have Bishop Teresa Jefferson-Snorton now serving as the Vice-Chair of the Council. We are grateful for her collaborative work and witness, and how under her leadership and strong vision the Council is seeking to ACT NOW to End Racism. We are deeply appreciative of the leadership of Senior Bishop Lawrence L. Reddick III, who stands in a long and esteemed tradition of leaders from the CME Church who represent the best of Christian love and service.

Obituaries

Mrs. Dorothy Ann Ballard Heggins

Mrs. Dorothy Ann Ballard Heggins, 81, passed away Tuesday, October 6, 2020 at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center.

Born May 19, 1939 in Rowan County, she was the daughter of the late Henry Ballard and Cherry Finny Ballard Jones.

Educated in the Rowan County School System, she attended Lincoln, Dunbar, and J.C. Price High School. In 1969, she furthered her education by attending Rowan Technical School and received her certification in Early Childhood Education.

She worked for over 30 years at Cone Mills, where she received the Citizen of the Year Award.

After retiring, she continued to work as a teacher at Kiddie Land Daycare for over 25 years, where she received recognition as “Teacher of the Year” and “Teacher of the Decade”.

A faithful member of Mt. Zion CME Church in Salisbury, she served on the Steward and Stewardess Boards, as a Trustee, Usher, sang in the church choirs, and was a Missionary. She was also a member of the Prison Ministry, Yoke Ministry and served the church wherever and whenever needed. Until her health declined, she was the worship leader at the Carolina Senior Care Center in Lexington, North Carolina.

In a civic capacity, she served in the Dixionville Association during the developing years as the financial secretary. She volunteered for many years with the Salvation Army, Rowan Helping Hands Homeless Shelter, was a donor for the American Cancer Society and was a member of Rose of Sharon Chapter, #1, Order of Eastern Star and the former Grand Noble Commandress of ISIS.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Heggins; brother, George Henry Ballard; and sisters, Annie Sue Vaughters and Martha Brown.

Those left to cherish her memories include her daughter, Vanessa Heggins Black of the home; foster children, Gwendolyn “Binkie” Seaman (Douglas), A’Shanta Scarbough, Monicka Brown, Robin Pharr, all of Salisbury, and Rev. Dr. Roderick D. Lewis, Sr.

of Memphis, TN; sisters, Lily Stockton (Roosevelt) of Salisbury, Jean Ealy of Glen Clove, New York, Rosetta Vann of Concord, and Loretta Stout of Salisbury; grandchildren, Tonya Heggins, Shannon Heggins, Douglas Seaman, Dondra Seamon and Cheryl Seamon all of Salisbury; 24 great-grandchildren; six greatgreat-grandchildren; special niece, Gloria Phillips; other nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members and friends.

Mrs. Geraldine Ceasar Greene

Mrs. Geraldine Ceasar Greene was called to heaven October 10, 2020. Known as "Geri" to all of her friends, she was the wife of Rev. James N. Greene, Jr. Her influence echoed throughout the Sixth Episcopal District through her participation in the Missionary Society, Ministers' Spouses, Stewardess Boards, and Lay Ministry, as a Soloist, and as a mentor to young preachers.

Born to Minnie Gibson Caesar and Russell Caesar on April 30, 1939, she was the fourth of seven girls and two boys. She attended school in the segregated school systems of Valdosta, Georgia.

Geraldine was an honor student through Secondary School and received a scholarship to attend college.

She graduated from Savannah State College, certified in both early and adult Education.

At Savannah State, she became a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. In addition to studying education, she also studied music and became an accomplished vocalist. She participated heavily in the early Civil Rights sit-ins, protesting the segregation of the lunch counters at Woolworth in Savannah, Georgia. She participated in rallies when Martin Luther King visited the First African Baptist Church in Savannah. She was known to be a champion for justice throughout her life. She summed up her experience by saying, "Things were not right, and something had to be done." She always challenged people to "Live Right" and was consistently the "peacemaker."

Sis. Mary Washington

Geraldine married the love of her life, James Greene Jr., on August 18, 1967, a bond that matured for more than 53 years. She joined Clifford Temple Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, Thomasville, Georgia, after marriage. [Her husband being called into pastoral ministry in 1979, she was the model preacher’s wife and] she served the church faithfully and diligently. Through the itinerant ministry, she beautifully supplemented the ministry of her husband by completing the ministry, simply doing what was needed. Through the 40 years of ministry, she led countless fundraisers, served as a Sunday school teacher, church officer, lay leader, and conference delegate. Early on, she purchased a piano and taught herself to play, because an early church didn’t have a music ministry. As the wife of a Presiding Elder, she was able to share the hard-learned lessons of Christian service throughout the district.

Always a student of history, she had a natural vocation for teaching social studies. She believed in responsible government and served as both a census taker and poll worker, underscoring her appreciation for the freedoms of democracy.

Geraldine also taught adult education with the State of Georgia. In 1976, she began teaching at Thomasville High School, where she retired after 30plus years. As an educator, she truly found her calling in life. Her lessons went well beyond the curriculum and reached in to change people's lives. Through the years, she inspired, mentored, blessed, touched, taught and uplifted hundreds. She was a mentor to many young teachers, helping them to navigate the difficult early years of teaching. After retirement, she volunteered at Archbold Hospital because she enjoyed helping serve the community.

Surviving Geraldine are her husband, Rev. James Greene Jr.; brother, Sam Ceasar; children, Patricia Ann Scott and James (Jamey) Greene III; sonin-law, Artis Scott; grandchildren, Artis Scott III and Christina; and great-grandson, Azai Scott. She was the family matriarch and leaves behind scores of nieces, nephews, cousins, and beloved friends. She truly never met a stranger and loved the good in everyone.

Sis. Washington was born October 11, 1931, accepted Christ at an early age, and was a faithful member of Mt. Zion. She had a beautiful soprano voice and was a member of the Voices of Praise, Mt. Zion Mass Choir, Senior Choir, and the Gospel Chorus organized by former pastor, Rev. Raymond F. Williams. Sis. Washington also served as Church Treasurer for many years and was well known throughout the district and annual conference as a member of the Missionary Society.

Sis. Washington was the long-time leader of the Darby Township Girl Scout Troop ... over forty years. She touched the lives of many young girls who she mentored and helped raise throughout the years.

She was a member of the Good Neighbor Senior Center and served on its Board of Directors. Mary was also a member of the Red Hatters and was known for wearing some sharp hats!!!! Never on a Sunday service did you see Sis. Washington without a fancy hat. Sis. Washington was also a member of the Pound Cakes and the Tuesday Morning Bowling Leagues.

Her presence will be deeply missed!

Mary Washington departed this life on November 19, 2020. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Washington, Sr.; brothers, Alfred and James Gidney; sister, Violet Warden; and her parents, Wesley and Edna Gidney.

She leaves to cherish her memories: her son, Robert Bryant, and daughter-in-law, Rev. Cynthia Bryant; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; stepdaughter, Wendy Hill (Charlie); sister, Marilyn Pereira; sister-in-law, Bernice Gidney; special niece, Rev. Crystal Jay (Rev.
