We do not love without a cause Who do you love without a cause? Perhaps the child to whom you gave birth, your spouse, lover, other people? Even though, as I have said on previous occasions, "Love is a choice," we choose to love with cause.

God did not love us without first cause. How might this be seen? First, God chose to create sentient beings who could recognize God's love and goodness and could reciprocate according to their God-given ability. Human freewill is an Rev. Dr. Ore L. Spragin, Jr., expression of God's love. Second, God prepared the world, creation, before our Editor human existence because God loved us, that we would not be lacking in any needed or good thing. Third, Christ was prepared for our redemption because in God's pre-eminent foreknowledge, God saw us as the sinners we would become and planned for our redemption. This was made manifest even in the punishment decreed/delivered in the Garden - a punishment mitigated by a love to be expressed in the distant future. As well, time for punishment (awareness and acknowledgement of sin), reformation (opportunities and power for character change), and restoration (forgiveness and relationship repair) are indicators of love, and almost all can be accepted or rejected at will. God's cause for love is God's choice to create and to redeem.

We human beings also do not love without cause. Adam and Eve recognized the goodness of God and chose to love God. This is seen in their reception and appreciation of the good of God towards them in created nature and provision for their wellbeing, in their apparent worship of God as evidenced through their conversations with God and through the worship acts of Cain and Abel, and in their shame after having sinned against God. Shame cannot be produced within a relationship where respect in love does not exist for the other.

Parents, and mothers in particular, love their babies because of the joy they have received and anticipate in bringing new life into the world. This love is also a result of the normally instinctive and concomitant responsibility of caring for the life that one has produced. We also do not love our spouses without cause. There is something attractive about them. Adam said that Eve was "bone of [his] bones, and flesh of [his] flesh."

(Genesis 2:23, KJV) This was after God had made humankind after God's "image" and "likeness," (Genesis 1:26, KJV) also a kind of generation and related to God's cause to love us. Friends, too, you grow to love because of some endearing characteristics or traits. Further, as it relates to your loving other people, there is an affinity that may exist, and for the Christian, there is the commandment of Christ to love. For the non-Christian, the source of love may include the desire for the common good and advancement of society as a whole. We love with cause.

In this Valentine's Day month, let us not take love for granted, neither those who love us. We are loved for cause, with reason. And we love with cause, or reason, in return. As believers, we love God because God first loved us, and we love others because we are commanded to love. What is more, we are taught to love when we choose to love, though we stumble along. And we do not find the command to love to be a weight or a burden, but rather a delight because of the joy we find and anticipate both in giving and receiving love, just as Christ loved us so greatly because of the joy received and anticipated both in the present and in the future. So let us love one another as Christ has loved us.

The Presiding Prelate of the 11th Episcopal District, Bishop K. Lawson Adjei, on Thursday, October 27th, 2023, resolved to do missions by visiting the hospital of the CME Church in Goma, DR Congo. It's a small hospital that serves the community where it is located and also serves thousands of refugees displaced by the ongoing activities of rebels in the country. Indeed, I saw some admitted government soldiers who were wounded by rebels at the hospital treatment.

In retrospect, Bishop has successfully held the Kenya Region Annual Conference, Rwanda Region Annual Conference, Burundi Region Annual Conference, Uganda Region Annual Conference, Tanzania Region Annual Conference and the next is Democratic Republic of Congo.

Bishop's Arrival In DR Congo The Presiding Prelate of the 11th Episcopal District, Bishop K. Lawson Adjei, arrived in Goma with 1st Lady Mercy Adjei on October 25th, 2023, to hold the annual conference of the regions. I was met on arrival by the Missions Supervisor, Rev. Dr. Dieudonne Mugongo and Honorable Philemon, who is a member of Parliament.

Bishop and his wife were taken through protocol immigration formalities. Soon after the Bishop's arrival, while waiting at the executive lounge of the airport, there was a heavy downpour which according to Mission Supervisor Mugongo, is a signal of blessings the bishop has brought to DR Congo. Bishop's next stop was a school complex under construction [through a grant] of $250,000.00 from the government of DR Congo to the church. The land on which the school is being built is yet to be purchased by the church. However, the short-lease gives them the go-ahead to continue with the construction. The appeal in this regard is to support the purchasing of the land for our children to continue with their education.

Annual Conference Communion Service Bishop K. Lawson Adjei will always want to prepare for his conference with a special service of prayers.

This will serve as a special impetus for successful

Connectional Interests conference. Indeed, it has worked and therefore will continue unabated.

Friday, October 28th, 2023, delegates who were arriving from far and near for the conference converged at Bethlehem CME Church in Goma for communion service. Hence an evening communion service held attracted members of the host church and the delegates. Mission Supervisor Dieudonne Mugongo preached the sermon from John 6:52-60.

Bishop Adjei led the prayer of consecration of the communion elements. The youths were in church to render songs with the church choir. Prayers were said for the church , College of Bishops, the 11th District and the entire nation of DR Congo. Indeed, the church was now set for the opening of the conference the next day [...] Saturday, October 29th.

Bishop Opens His 1st Sessional Annual Conference of DR Congo The 68th Bishop of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, Bishop K. Lawson Adjei, opened his 1st Sessional Annual Conference of the DR Congo on October 28th, 2023, at Bethlehem CME Church in Goma. As already stated, the four Annual Conferences were combined for security reasons. Delegates were drawn from far and near. Some of them when coming were hijacked by rebels, but after some negotiations they were released. It took some of the delegates 2 days to arrive in Goma.

The conference opened with a devotion led by Rev. Bahati Jean. Bishop's opening statement was about the CME Polity on how annual conferences operate and how to become a preacher in the CME Church.

Reports were received from Mission Supervisor Dieudonne Mugongo, Women's Missionary Society, Youth and Young Adult Council, Lay Council, Christian Education, Director of Medical Services, Elders, Pastors, etc. Significantly, 137 churches were reported with total membership of 156,238; one medical hospital, and 171 schools.

Special guest of honor to the conference was the Speaker of Parliament of North Kivu Provinces, Rt. Honorable Seninga Robert. He commended the church for playing advocacy roles, educating future leaders of

Episcopacy the country, offering medical services to the citizens and above all giving the spiritual food to the citizens.

Prayers were said for him and the government. He highly commended the bishop for coming to lift up the image of CME Church in DR Congo.

First Lady Mercy [Adjei] preached the ordination sermon. She encouraged the ordinands to put their houses in order. 29 pastors were ordained to the order of Deacon and 11 ordained to the order of Elder.

Bishop presented 4 sowing machines to the Bishop Snorton Vocational School to augment women's empowerment by learning skills to become selfsufficient and self-reliant. Furthermore, Bishop presented a motorcycle to one of the Assistant Mission Supervisors in DR Congo who works at a very deprived, remote area with acute poverty and little means of transportation. Hence, to keep him working effectively to grow our churches, Bishop Adjei had to perform this gesture. Indeed, the people were blessed with the presence of the bishop. I can say that the Lord has used me to fortify the gains made by my predecessors.

Bishop Adjourned DR Congo Conferences The Presiding Prelate of the 11th Episcopal District, Bishop K. Lawson Adjei, closed the DR Congo Regional Conferences with an explosive worship service at Bethlehem CME Church in Goma on October 29th, 2023. Ironically, delegates were still arriving as rebels kept chasing them to collect their monies on their way to the conference. A presiding Elder arrived today without any money on him.

Songs were rendered from all the musical groups that were present. 1st Lady Mercy was presented with a piece of cloth from the Women's Missionary Council.

Bishop received a financial donation of $500.00 from the Speaker of Parliament for his return ticket. Bishop gave the money to the Women's Missionary Council to support the micro finance project that is ongoing. The Speaker of Parliament also blessed the church with 100 bags of cement for any church project. Passing of character was done, after which certificates of appointment were presented.

The Mission Supervisor, four Assistant Mission Supervisors, 26 Presiding Elders, and Conference Officers were all given stipends by the bishop to go back and work under the banner of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. The conference adjourned till next year. Who else could have done this? Only God. To him alone be the glory.

2023 UNITY SUMMIT & CONNECTIONAL BOARD MEETING The 2023 Unity Summit & Connectional Board Meeting was held from August 20th - 25th, 2023, in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. The host was the 4th Episcopal District whose presiding prelate is Bishop Kenneth Wayne Carter. Members of the Board for the 11th Episcopal District, both resident in USA and Africa, were fully represented. Seasonal preachers and speakers were invited to the summit.

Opening and presiding over the Connectional Board meeting was the Senior Bishop Lawrence I.. Reddick III. All active bishops of the church were present.

A service of Holy Communion was held. Bishop Sylvester Williams, Presiding Prelate of the 3rd Episcopal District, preached the sermon. Bishop K. Lawson Adjei read the New Testament reading from Matthew 26:31-35; 69-75.

The next Unity Summit of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church will be held September 1-6, 2024, in Dallas, Texas. The host Episcopal District is the 8th.

BISHOP ADJEI HONORED BY THE JUDICIAL COUNCIL OF CME CHURCH Bishop K. Lawson Adjei was honored by the Judicial Council of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in recognition, honor, and appreciation for twelve years of distinguished service as Justice on the Judicial Council of the CME Church.

Bishop Lawson deeply appreciated the gift and thanked all members of the Judicial Council for the gesture.

APPRECIATION The Eleventh Episcopal District will sincerely want to thank the Eighth and Sixth Episcopal Districts for their continuous help and support to the missionary outreach of the 11th Episcopal District. It is a clear demonstration of the fact that the church is connected.

We continue to appeal to all members of the CME Church to continue to give support to missions outside the walls of the United States of America.

BISHOP'S NEW YEAR MESSAGE We give God the glory for bringing us to another year. His grace has given us the power, wisdom and understanding to serve the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. While we admit that it has not been easy with some of our churches and membership in some parts of the 11th Episcopal District, we cannot stop saying thanks to the Almighty God for what he has done in 2023.

Bishop has travelled length and breadth of the 11th Episcopal District to hold his Annual Conferences.

Outstanding reports that were received from some of our church leadership deserve some sort of highest commendations. Thanks for making it happen within the 11th District by our own means of indigenous leadership as Africans. It is my humble appeal to our numerous church membership to continue holding on to our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. He is the only one who can carry all our burdens and give us rest.

Let us continue to fix our eyes on him, for Jesus never fails. The year 2024, in my opinion, promises to be a year of God enlarging our territories in the 11th Episcopal District. It might not be the same way of God's dealings with us [as it is with you], but his love for us promises to be equal, and this gives us the justification for holding on to him.

God bless us all, and I wish each and everyone of our church membership Merry Christmas and Prosperous Happy New Year.

BE BOLD: Face Now-Embrace Next-See New Seeing New in A New Year Just over a few weeks ago we left the Pastors’ Conference. What a time we had. Wow! We experienced dynamic panelists, edge-of-our-seat proclamations, and great fellowship. Now that the conference has concluded and we have returned to our ministry contexts, do we understand the assignment? We are the leaders selected to lead God’s people into a postpandemic society. We were challenged with Seeing the New: Discovering Next Level Ministries that Transform Churches. We must answer the following questions: How do we “See New?” How do we move from the meetings to the streets? What is the pathway we take? Do we move cautiously forward, or do we become risk takers for the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church? It is a New Year! What Bold steps have we taken? How do we Face Now? How do we Embrace next?

How do we See New? As leaders we must take another look, a fresh and deeper look. The details of our ministry must not be overlooked. It may look like the same church, community, or ministry, the same process and even the same people and setting. But look again! We must take a closer look at the details of our assignment as leaders and the details of the place where the ministry happens. We are now Phillips School of Theology at the ITC and at GarretEvangelical Theological Seminary. Bishop Sylvester Wiliams reminded us that Phillips is not dead. I concur that it certainly is not, but rather that God has enlarged our territory. We are the only Seminary of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in two locations. That's Bold, New, and Now we can embrace it.

Being Bold, Facing Now, Embracing Next, and Seeing New requires motivation. Motivation can be internal or external, high or low tempered, and driven by risk or reward. Motivation alone, however, will not suffice. We must make the choice to do more. How did the initial forty-one visionaries start a denomination? I cannot say emphatically, but I contend they were motivated to see new.

We can do the work of missions (local and/or abroad), evangelism, social justice, and discipleship. I’m sure the fortyone visionaries of The Colored Methodist Episcopal Church were told they couldn’t, but they saw something different and better. They envisioned having a place to worship God. However, their greater motivation was a “we can” (Phil 4:13) attitude that moved them from the meeting to the streets. They did not see the same ole’ things. May I suggest that seeing new is discovery? There is an element of faith that’s required for motivation to see new.

Risk or Reward? Fear of the known or unknown must not be the excuse for effective leaders to risk creating new ministries to transform churches. Was Jesus a risk taker? Yes! Jeus was also a transformer of ministries. When he went against the empire of his day, He was taking a huge risk, putting his life on the line to start a movement. He took time to teach, preach and reach the undesirables with his message of inclusion and God’s love. We must do likewise if we are going to Be Bold, Face Now, Embrace Next, and See New in this new year.

From increasing homelessness, the cost of living, and unemployment to decreasing governmental programs and support, there are signs everywhere of the precariousness of our situation. Yet, at the same time, we can be inspired by individuals who give unselfishly and with enthusiasm in support of our future leaders through educational scholarships.

The Graham/Webb/Kennedy scholarships result from generous Churches, Laity, and friends of our communities who are willing to invest financial resources in talented CME Youth throughout our Denomination. Below is the list of Fall 2023 scholarship awardees and financial contributions from the Fall of 2023 through the current date.

The need continues. Consequently, there is still an opportunity to contribute to this scholarship and make a difference. Please continue to forward all contributions to my attention at the address below.

Make 2024 Your Best Year Yet. Obey God and Aim High!

There once was a man who had nothing for his family to eat. He had an old rifle and three bullets. So, he decided that he would go out hunting and kill some wild game for dinner.

As he went down the road, he saw a rabbit. He shot at the rabbit and missed it. The rabbit ran away. Then he saw a squirrel and fired a shot at the squirrel and missed it. The squirrel disappeared into a hole in a cottonwood tree. As he went further, he saw a large wild turkey in the tree, but he had only one bullet remaining.

A voice spoke to him and said to pray first, aim high and stay focused.

However, at the same time, he saw a deer which was a better kill. He brought the gun down and aimed at the deer. But, then he saw a rattlesnake between his legs about to bite him, so he naturally brought the gun down further to shoot the rattlesnake. The voice said again to him, I said Pray, Aim high and Stay focused!

So, the man decided to listen to God's voice. He prayed, then aimed the gun high up in the tree and shot the wild turkey. The bullet bounced off the turkey and killed the deer. The handle fell off the gun and hit the snake in the head and killed it. And when the gun had gone off, it knocked him into a pond. When he stood up to look around, he had fish in all his pockets, a dead deer and a turkey to eat for his family. The snake (Satan) was dead simply because the man listened to God. Obey God and Aim High! Isaiah 43:2: "When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.

Commission on the Concerns of Women In the Ministry

A Look at the COWIM Submitted by Rev. Lisa Lewis Balboa, Coordinator This Quadrennial, I am humbled and honored to serve as the Coordinator for the Commission on the Concerns of Women In the Ministry.

From January 8-11, 2024, I was blessed to attend the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church's 28th Pastors' Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. At the conference, one of my sisters in ministry asked me about the butterfly pin that I was wearing. I shared with her that under the leadership of our past Coordinator, Bishop Denise Anders-Modest, the butterfly had become the symbol for the Commission on the Concerns of Women In the Ministry. As women in the ministry we wear the butterfly as a reminder that we are being transformed.

This year the theme for the Pastors' Conference dealt with going back and transforming our local churches! One of the goals of each COWIM Episcopal Representative is to not just transform ourselves, but to help transform the work of the Women In Ministry within the Episcopal Districts in which we serve!

Students Follow Pathway Blazed by Alumna Submitted by Jake Martin

Over 72 years ago, Dr. Mildred Jefferson, a 1945 trailblazing Alumna of Texas College, earned her Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree, becoming the first Black woman to graduate from Harvard Medical School. Today, three female students are following the pathway to careers in medicine that she helped to forge.

Asia Brown, Ashley Patterson, and Mabebe Kuka have all three been accepted into the Early Assurance Program, also known as the Pathways to Medicine program. This newly formed partnership between Texas College and the UT Tyler School of Medicine provides Texas College students the opportunity to engage in high-caliber preparation for medical school, as well as the admission process. The curriculum includes experiential learning, professional development, panel discussions, Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) preparation, volunteer opportunities, clinical exposure, and physician shadowing. The program is currently underway, as students regularly meet on Fridays to practice taking the MCAT and individually review with advisors. Congruently, the students have also had the opportunity to attend seminars, as well as grand rounds, continuing medical education presentations for current physicians. A New Year Reflection Submitted by Rev. Andrew Archer Happy New Year my brothers.

I pause to share this reflection with you.

Proverbs Chapter 1 Reflection Proverbs 1:8 says, “Hear my child, your father’s instruction.”

This makes it crystal care that the way that God relates to humanity is as a Father does to a child.

What do we know about this relationship?

A father shares the same essence as his child.

A father loves his child and wants what’s best for them.

A father and child are partners in the work of legacy building.

A father disciples his child because he loves them and protects them.

A child submits to his fathers will.

A child is secure in his father’s love.

A child is safe and satisfied in his father’s protection and provision.

A child learns to lead from the example of leadership impresses upon him by their father.

Proverbs 1:32-33 says, ”For waywardness kills the simple, and the complacency of fools destroys them; but those who listen to me will be secure and will live at ease, without dread of disaster.”

Today my son was attempting to plug in the light of the Christmas tree, until I stopped him sternly and warned him that it’s best for me to do it because it could cause him, if done improperly, to experience an electric shock.

He replied, “It won’t shock me, daddy!” He said this because he had never experienced a shock, but I have, and that is why, because of my love for him, I prevented him from plugging in lights.

If God relates to us as a father to his child, how will we respond to His word? This year will you listen to God, your Heavenly Father, or will you assume that you know better than He does?

In 2024, I pray that God will draw you and your family to trust in Him as the loving Father that He is. In Jesus’ name.

On the new year Submitted by Rev Ermanno Willis With a free will offering I will sacrifice to you; I will give thanks to your name, O Lord, for it is good. Psalm 54:6 A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins. Mark 12:42 As I reflect on the aspect of giving as suggested by these two texts, I am reminded that the kind of giving that pleases God is the kind that makes us more like our creator. I thank God that I have been given life, family, health, and wealth. I’ve been hearing many declare “…more in 2024,” yet I can’t help but wonder if God is inviting me to respond more like the givers above. Where the Psalm writer gives above and beyond what is required of him in this freewill offering. This is the kind of offering that has the sentiment - God you have required me to give this amount, but you have been so good to me, I don’t think that the requirement is enough. Or, maybe where this widow is observed giving all that she has, but it doesn’t add up to the others in monetary value. This is the kind of offering that has the sentiment - While what is prescribed by the ritual is beyond what I can give at this point, I did not come to worship empty handed, and I just want you, God, to receive what I do have I give to you.

HALLELUJAH NIGHT – OCTOBER 31, 2023 NEITHER SLEET, NOR SNOW… Submitted by Sharon Kimbrough Murchison-Isom CME Church

An unexpected snowstorm in Chicago didn't stop the excited Halloween trick-or-treaters and moms from attending Hallelujah Night at Murchison-Isom/Jubilee Temple at 4310 S. Champlain Avenue, Chicago, Illinois. After dusting off the snow, they eagerly came through the doors expecting to have a good time. Our fellowship hall was brightly decorated in the traditional Halloween colors of orange and black. There were pumpkins, scarecrows, and spiders on the wall. Big bowls of candy were on each table.

Children were dressed in costumes that depicted superheroes Batman and Captain America. Also represented were Luigi, Naruto, a soldier, and a fairy, to name a few. They all came out to enjoy Hallelujah Night with us. Both the children and their moms played games and won prizes. Pastor Gregory Williams and First Lady Linda Williams were on hand to enjoy the festivities with the guests. We all had a fun time celebrating Hallelujah Night with the children and their moms. After all the games were played and prizes given, we had hot dogs, chips and a drink. Then everyone went home with a big bag of Hallelujah Night candy.

In a previous article under the same title, I attempted to describe who is a real Methodist.

That article dealt with the personal character of the person who had made the personal decision to be an authentically Methodist person.

In this article I will attempt to move from the character of a Methodist to the beliefs (doctrines) of an authentic Methodist. What does a real Methodist believe and why does he believe what he believes?

All Methodists trace their beliefs back to their founder, John Wesley. Wesley traced his beliefs back to an “Old Religion” he came upon while reading materials from the Ancient Church Fathers.

Wesley traced that “Old Religion” to the God of the Bible, then to the Church of England, and then to Methodism.

It was my experience to enter the Methodist Ministry in the 1960’s under the leadership of the late Bishop Norris S. Curry who instilled in us young preachers the need to understand the belief system of John Wesley. In order to do that, it was necessary to read and study at least six resources: 1) THE HOLY BIBLE; 2) The Writings, Letters, and Journals of John Wesley; 3) Wesley’s Forty-Four Standard Sermons; 4) Wesley’s Explanatory Notes On The New Testament; 5) The Hymns of John and Charles Wesley; 6) A Copy of The General Rules and The Articles of Religion.

As I have studied Wesley’s materials over the years, I have concluded that Wesley stood firm on what I choose to call “some non-negotiables.” These are standard doctrines for any and all Methodists. I will briefly mention only ten of them in this writing with a fuller discussion to come later.

Wesley believed THE HOLY SCRIPTURES to be God’s revelation to man; the sole authority for doctrines and practices.

Wesley believed in ORIGINAL SIN. All men need to be saved! All men can be saved! All men can know they are saved to the utmost!

Wesley believed ALL MEN ARE SAVED BY GRACE through faith alone in the shed blood of Jesus on the cross.

Wesley believed in THE DOCTRINE OF FULL ASSURANCE that man can know he is saved.

Wesley believed in CHRISTIAN PERFECTION: the rooting out of all sin and replacing it with God’s perfect love.

Wesley believed in THE DEITY OF CHRIST, in His sinless life, and His atoning death on the cross.

Wesley believed in INWARD AND OUTWARD HOLINESS: love under discipline; spreading “Scriptural Holiness” throughout the land.

Wesley believed in THE TRINITY: the one true and living God the Father, the Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit.

Wesley believed in THE GRACE OF GOD: Prevenient Grace that comes before saving grace; and Saving Grace which is a free gift of God for salvation.

Wesley believed in FAITH: the sure trust and confidence of being saved from everlasting damnation because of Christ.

In summary, the foundation of the Doctrine of Methodism is this: “By grace are ye saved through faith” (Ephesians 2:8). We are all, by nature, born in a sinful and undone state before God. Faith in God showed us what a great change Christ could produce in the hearts of men and that every man who is in Christ is a new creature and is saved by that faith!

Let each of us examine our beliefs and see if they are in line with what John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, believed. If they are, then you are truly an authentic Methodist and thus, an authentic Christian.

Walker Chapel Promotes

PROSTATE CANCER AWARENESS

On Sunday September 17th, 2023, Walker Chapel CME Church in Texarkana, Texas, acknowledged Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.

Black men are 70% more likely to develop prostate cancer in their lifetime and twice as likely to die from the disease. There are many factors that can increase the risk and worsen the outcome of prostate cancer - not just being of African descent. These include age, family history, smoking, limited physical activity, and obesity. The higher risk may also be related to social and environmental issues involving nutrition, access to health care, and exposure to environmental pollutants. Disparities in outcome also can be affected by differences in when the cancer is diagnosed and how the men are treated after diagnosis.

The men of Walker Chapel served as worship participants for morning worship service. Brother Arie Dawson (Worship Leader) and Presiding Elder Don White, Sr. (Pastor) shared vital information African American men should know to help reduce their chances of developing and dying from Prostate Cancer. The men of the church purchased (in varying-sized packages) over 600 total male urinary incontinence products. The products were donated to residents of the Winfield Estates, an affordable housing complex in Texarkana, Texas. Program Chairmen were Brother Michael Walker and Brother Billy Bradley.

My Take On The Episcopal Address Written By Bishop Teresa Snorton The Episcopal Address written by Bishop Teresa Snorton Encourages the church to be bold It appears to me the message is to acknowledge the new as we embrace the old As we look at the pandemic that has not gone away We recognize that this is the new normal for today She challenges us to see God in this “new” thing Face now that the church has shifted and it has a new message to bring Facing now we must acknowledge what is true We are not the strong church we used to be Our membership has declined, our finances therefore have shrunk too So we must be bold and stand on the truth of God’s word and face the reality of what we must do Acting with boldness and courage will help us through Realizing our strengths are our wealth, recognize what we have already done Schools, scholarships, embracing women and using technology are battles we have fought and won We have to embrace next to serve the present age By fixing our infrastructures that [are] in need of repair And looking how to fix our church as people who really care Embracing next is more discipleship Going out and seeking others A vibrant church that is exciting and a fruitful faith walk that will catch on and make other sisters and brothers We have to be better stewards of what we have been blessed Using our time, talents and treasure without recognition is really the test We must invest in outreach not just locally but also abroad making a difference in the community showing we are a church of God We must see new as we merge hybrid and in-person worship which is the new thing of this age The pandemic caused us to see a new way of worshipping and advance to a new stage Seeing new may mean merging congregations where the attendance is few Rather than forty empty churches maybe twenty will do As we see new congregations they will be stronger together Therefore would be able to endure whatever they may weather We must learn to use technology so the church can come up to date People must have the ability to pay in other ways than just passing the plate Then to see new we must prepare our clergy to be educated to do their best Providing opportunities for one to learn without putting their finances to the test The essence of the address was for us to be bold as a church, face what is now embrace what is next and see what we can do new The vision is to make the church healthier as we face what is ahead and plot the best paths to ensue Nellie C. Mobile District Observes FIRST MTM Day Submitted by Dr. Archie Rowe

On October 21, 2023, the Mobile District Ministry to Men Department of the South East Alabama Region observed their First Annual Ministry to Men Day at Williams Temple CME Church in Thomasville, Alabama, Rev. James Campbell, pastor.

The event was well attended by boys and men of the District.

The men chose a powerful theme, “Am I My Brother’s Keeper,” which was also the title of the message given by speaker, Bro. Jerome McReynolds of Wesley Chapel CME Church. Bro. McReynolds message was truly appropriate, inspiring and soul-stirring to all in attendance.

Rev. John Johnson, Regional Director of Ministry to Men, presented two plaques in recognition of outstanding work to Wesley Chapel CME Church, York, Alabama; and Fairfield CME Church, Halsell, Alabama. Presiding Elder Rev. Curtis Russell assisted with the presentations.

Following the program, the men provided a very enjoyable and plentiful, free lunch for the attendees with the option of dine-in or to-go.

Northwest District Training for Awareness and Engagement Submitted by Rev. Dr. Linda R. Barnett

Presiding Elder Northwest District, Eighth Episcopal District Eighth Episcopal District Director of Christian Education and Formation

The Northwest District recently participated in training to increase awareness and community engagement during Clergy Appreciation Month. What strengths have you identified in your church’s community? What are at least three opportunities for ministry your church can address? What partnerships have you established in your church’s community?

These are a few of the questions I pose to pastors and leaders on the Northwest District as Presiding Elder. During the month of October, pastors in the Northwest District engaged in a workshop for Clergy Appreciation Month. We discussed strategic planning for ministry, financial accountability, building partnerships in the community, and exploring spaces for meditation.

Rev. Kenneth and Rev. Tanesha Hollingshed blessed the pastors with intimate conversation and strategies to maintain healthy boundaries in ministry.

Domestic Violence Awareness and Breast Cancer Awareness were addressed during the District Council meeting with churches providing blessing bags for persons at Noah Project in Abilene which houses persons and families experiencing domestic violence. The presenter heightened our awareness of human trafficking in the African American community with the U.S. Department of Justice reporting African American women and girls are 40% of all victims and survivors of sex trafficking. The district was specifically encouraged to be more attentive to changes in behavior among youth and children who could possibly be victims of human trafficking and exploitation. Traffickers typically prey on persons whose vulnerabilities include poverty, unlawful immigration status, non-English

speaking, and limited economic and educational opportunities.

According to www.breastcancer.org, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among U.S. women. Each year, about 30% of all newly diagnosed cancers in women are breast cancer. In the United States, less than 1% of all breast cancers occur in men. African American women are being diagnosed at younger ages and early detection is best. Hendricks Medical Center’s representative informed the district of routine breast exams and mobile mammography options for churches to inform the community. As a result of these presentations, churches gained insight on ways to provide resources and ministry to victims of domestic violence and increase breast cancer awareness.

Prayerfully we will hear the voice of God giving us opportunities to continue to not only inform our congregations and communities but also consistently serve the communities near our churches and utilize resources that are readily available.

Post Oak Celebrates 145 Years Submitted by Ruby J. Portley

"I'm pressing on toward the upward way, new heights I'm gaining every day; still praying as I onward bound, 'Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.'" - (Johnson Oatman's Higher Ground) The 145th Anniversary and Homecoming Service of the Post Oak Christian Methodist Episcopal Church was held on Sunday, June 25, 2023. Our theme for this stupendous celebration was: "Oh Look Back (1878) and See How Far We Have Come! From a Box Car to a Log Cabin, to a Wooden Foundation to Brick and Mortar! And to the 21st Century and the 145th Anniversary." The scriptural basis was Philippians 3:13-14.

On that Sunday, the Post Oak CME Church membership, along with our pastor, Rev. John D. Griffin, Jr., witnessed that another page in our history book had been turned over, as we looked back and reflected on the 145th Church Anniversary.

Rev. Dr. W.W. Mays, former pastor of Post Oak CME Church, returned to bring the anniversary message. Dr. Mays' anniversary topic/subject was: "Press On, Press Forward and Look Back" - Philippians 3:13-14. We received the Word spoken in layman's terms; to review the past positive areas we have traveled, knowing that the road wasn't easy, but we pressed our way through. Post Oak was established/founded in 1878. The first place of worship was in a box car, on to a log cabin, and in the 1900's a wooden building, and lastly - to the 21st Century - a modern brick edifice.

Post Oak has witnessed many eras of downfalls, but continued to stay on the upward struggle to success. Thank you, Elder Mays, for coming and reminding us to stay on the course and continue to look up, for God still has His hands on us.

We've been up, we've been down, we've been leveled to the ground, but God has always picked us up. To the Post Oak family: Continue to press on, moving upward and looking forward. Your journeys have been rugged, but you maintained and sustained the journey.

The 145th Anniversary Litany was led by Miss Erica Boggs. The Memorial Tribute was given by Sis. Ruby Portley and Special Recognitions, by Sis. Elouise Randall.

Post Oak CME Church has come a long, long way from the year 1878 to the present 21st Century. Our history denotes the struggles encountered through the 145 years. We thank God for bringing us through the struggles and for guidance into the 21st Century.

Post Oak CME Church recently received special recognition from the City of Longview and the Gregg County Historical Commission for a Church that is still active for over 100 -150 years. Post Oak's Historical Marker was dedicated in 2013. Bro. Johnny King presently serves as President of the Gregg County Historical Commission. Sis. Ruby Portley is a past member of the Gregg County Historical Commission, serving on the Board for 7 years. She was the Marker Sponsor for Post Oak's Historical Marker, which entailed doing the research, writing the Narratives, applying for the Marker; tracking the progress and delivery (when finished), and initiating the dedication which was held on January 12, 2013.

THE LAW OF LOVE Submitted by James Taylor

Recently, the CME Sunday school lessons were about Biblical law. Much time was spent on the law in present day Christian walk. Most of the time in classes I attended, emphasis was about no longer being UNDER the law. Much time was spent on scripture detailing the “bad law” and that we are no longer under the law.

Several issues occurred to me during the classes on “no longer under the law.”

First, there are several aspects of the law. What the disciples and many followers of Jesus referenced about the “law” was purification, dietary rules, worship ritual, clean and unclean animals, circumcision, purification laws and many practices of the Old Testament. Without getting too complicated, there were many “laws" the Israelite people were not to adopt from surrounding cultures. The “law” had to do with diet (don’t eat), religious ritual (don't mingle with or serve other gods, do not intermarry, avoid paganism, etc.). The lesson was that Jewish people were “under the law,” and that was bad.

The cornerstone of Jewish law was the Ten Commandments. These ten laws were the foundation of the Jewish faith. They were the defining mark of the Jewish people even in the New Testament. Unfortunately, then as today, as Christian culture spread, the Ten Commandments got thrown into the mix of not “under the law” like circumcision, certain food, etc. I am afraid that the Ten Commandments have been disbanded like certain Old Testament practices, etc. Unfortunately, I think the Ten Commandments have become something of a “whipping boy" as Christianity has grown. The Ten commandments became known as the law in many instances and [remains so] with many Christians when they talk about “not under the “Law.” In many instances, not under the LAW includes the Ten Commandments in combination with [these Old Testament ordinances and restrictions]. I believe that is incorrect.

Christians should be reminded that Jesus in his New Testament teaching talked about the Ten Commandments as being the “law of love.” The Apostle Paul also referenced the commandments as a platform for his preaching in many instances. Without quoting all the verses/places in the New Testament where The “Law of Love” is referenced, the law of love includes loving our neighbor, not killing, not stealing, not committing adultery, etc .

As we study the Word of God, let us remember we may not be under the Law, but we are under the “law of Love.” The law of Love looks a lot like following the command of God.

Joining the Great Cloud

Mrs. Irene Tuggle Mason Irene (Deet) Tuggle was the 10th child of eleven children born to the late Andrew Tuggle and the late Eattie Crutcher Tuggle in Germantown, Tennessee, March 20, 1931.

She was united in holy matrimony to the love of her life, John Mason, Sr., in 1956. From this union three wonderful children were conceived: Patricia, John, Jr., and Gwendolyn.

She was a graduate of Geeter High School.

She also attended Henderson Business College and classes relating to floral designing. She later became a long-time employee of Newman’s Florist in Memphis, Tennessee.

Irene began her Christian experiences at an early age and became a devoted lifetime member of Prospect CME Church. She was a faithful servant of the Stewardess Board, Missionary Society, Usher Board, and Sunday School. Irene was a real prayer warrior who loved to give Hallelujah Praises to our God. She could say her prayers with heart-reaching spirit. She was an anointed and gifted speaker. Her life was an open book because she truly served God and through this service devoted her life to helping to make things better for others.

She used the skills that God blessed her with to open and become one of the first African American florists in Memphis, Tennessee. She blessed many households to have floral arrangements that were second to none. Her God-given business skills did not stop there. She went on to become a real estate investor in houses and apartment buildings. This venture gave her the opportunity to help people have affordable, decent living quarters at prices that were compatible to their wages.

She, really, never met a stranger. She always held out a helping hand no matter who that person might have been. God and His love and grace were imminent and obvious in her life. She shared and spread it to all who came in contact with her. Irene (as her family affectionately called her “Deet”) was like an Angel on Earth who was sent by God. She was sincerely loved and admired by many people.

She was preceded in this homegoing journey by her parents, Andrew & Eattie Tuggle and nine of

her eleven brothers and sisters: Andrew, Jr., Luther, Benjamin, Alise, Mamie, Mattie, Clyde, Henry, and Lawrence. Gone to also meet her there is her loving husband John, Sr.; a grandson, Euric; and a granddaughter, Ashley Nicole.

Irene Mason departed this life on April 14, 2023. She leaves to cherish her memory until we all meet again: daughters Patricia Williams and Gwendolyn Hankins (David), and son Rev. John Mason, Jr. (Sandra), all of Memphis, Tennessee; daughters Roberta Ingram and Delois Bryd (Chauncey) of Memphis, Tennessee; one brother, Clydell Tuggle (Lettie) of Saratoga, California; one little sister, Dorothy M. Ward (Willie) of Memphis, Tennessee; five sisters-in-law, Hattie Tuggle (Benjamin) of Memphis, Tennessee, Viola Tuggle (Lawrence) of Campbell, California, and Ruby Jean Carney (Charlie), Evelyn Leatherwood (Chester), and Marilyn Gatlin (Lindberg), all of Memphis, Tennessee; one brotherin-law, Elihue Mason (Eva) of Memphis, Tennessee; and a special godson, Minister Leonard Franklin of Memphis, Tennessee. She leaves a legacy of grandkids: Erica J. Williams, Gregory Mason, Daela R. Hankins; and one great-grandson Damarion Hankins. Each one held a very special place in her heart. She also leaves a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, and very devoted and loved in-laws to cherish her memory.

Memories will forever linger from her spiritual sisters and prayer partners: Mrs. Beatrice Butler and Rev. Versie Pulphus Easter of Memphis, Tennessee.

Mrs. Mary Frances Williams Mrs. Mary Frances Williams was born June 11, 1930, to the union of the late Joe and Ruth Williams in Thomas County, Thomasville, Georgia. On Sunday, October 15, 2023, Mary transcended from this terrestrial shore to a home of celestial peace.

Married to Rudolph Williams, Mary was the doting mother of Julia Ruth Willams Harris.

Mary was reared in a nurturing, Christian home and church environment. Her childhood and young adult Christian roots were at the Trinity Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Beachton, Georgia. Her later years of service were at Hines Memorial Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Albany, Georgia. Until her health failed, she served faithfully in the Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Missionary Society and Stewardess Ministry. She loved traveling to attend the Regional and Connectional meetings for the Missionary Society and Council.

Education was paramount in the Williams household. Mary was educated in the Thomas County School System and received a B.S. Degree in Elementary Education from Albany State College (University) in 1957. She also did further studies at Albany State College (University).

Mary retired as an elementary school teacher from the Dougherty County School System after 30plus years of teaching fourth grade.

Mary was an active member of the Georgia Retired Educators Association, Dougherty County Retired Educators Association, and Gamma Phi Delta Sorority.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rudolph Williams; her brother, James Williams; and granddaughter, Holley.

Mary leaves to cherish her memory, a devoted daughter, Julia Ruth Williams Harris (Charles); grandson Joel, Sr. (Shorale); five great-grandchildren: Lakyra, Joel, Jr., Jeremiah, Jalin, and Braylen; two great-great-grandchildren, Sage and Jade, all of Albany, Georgia; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and life-long friends.

June Elizabeth Morrow June Elizabeth Morrow was born June 7, 1934 and was the daughter of Harriette and Edward Hill. She attended the middle schools in New York, and later graduated from Boggs Academy, a Presbyterian school that was based in Keysville, Georgia. She went on to attend Fort Valley State College, now Fort Valley State University, where she graduated 38

in 1956 with a Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education. After she went into the workforce, she made the decision to move forward with completing her Master's, also from Fort Valley State University.

During her tenure at Fort Valley State College, she met and married the love of her life, the late Amos L. Morrow. From this union two children were born.

June was an educator for 32 years, where she touched many lives of young children, that truly adored her. She taught in the school systems in the cities of Macon, Vienna, and then Albany, Georgia.

She provided not only an education to her students but also made certain that no child was left behind.

June was a faithful member of Hines Memorial Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, where she served as a Missionary and Stewardess. She attended church faithfully until she reached a point where she was unable to do so. She dearly loved her Church family.

June enjoyed, traveling, baking, shopping, participating in social club activities, and talking on the phone. Near the end of her life, she started sharing stories from her childhood that she so enjoyed reminiscing about.

She was a devoted member of the ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA Sorority, Inc., where she affectionately served for many years.

June will be remembered for being a mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, and a devoted friend. There was nothing that she would not do, if you just asked. She had a heart of gold, and had not problem pouring out her love to all that she encountered.

June Elizabeth Morrow left this world on December 8, 2023. A brother, Frank Hanson, preceded her in death.

She leaves a legacy of love to her two children, Darryl Steve Morrow (Vanessa) and Kathy Edwards (John); ten grandchildren, Renee Boddy, Candace Dantes (Kevin), Elizabeth Emmanuel (Karlos), Chauncey Shaw, Edward Morrow, Courtney Shaw, Jasmine Palmer (Elliott), Kelli Ward (Jamoski), John Edwards IV, and Jordan Edwards; eleven greatgrandchildren; one sister, Joyce Vasser (Butch); special friends: Gwen Killins, Betty Harris, Betty Webb, Rena Parker, Denise Roles, Billy Lemon, William Brooks; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
