Missions and the CME Church How do we define missions? Will we ever come together? What will it take?

The Strategic Plan adopted by the CME Church in the General Conference of June 2022 stated in part: “The second goal is to dramatically increase our impact internationally as evidenced by: # of focused missions and partnerships and # of operationally sustainable and funded projects. The strategic initiative aligned with this goal is to establish a clearly defined structure to consistently support and manage CME mission work.”

It was articulated in the early planning stages of the CME Strategic Plan beginning in 2020 and in the subsequent presentations (“listening tours”) across the Connection via Zoom and in-person meetings that, “Missions refers to 1) specific projects to meet articulated needs for a definitive period of time and/or 2) creating CME congregations in non-US countries.”

On December 22, 2022, General Secretary of Evangelism and Missions Rev. Leon Moore hosted a Zoom panel discussion titled, “Mission-Minded.” The purpose of the meeting was loosely given as an opportunity for a panel of certain individuals in our church who have had lengthy or professional experience in missions of various kinds outside the continental United States (US) to have a public conversation with one another. The designated panel consisted of Dr. Paul Brown (President-Dean of Phillips School of Theology), long-time international missioners Rev. Dr. Mary McKinney and Rev. Phoebe Presson, Bishop Ricky D. Helton, and Rev. Andrew Archer (native Bahamian now living in the US).

The initial conversation centered on the definition of missions, what missions is and what it is not, provoking much debate and little consensus. Further discussion concerned the worship aspect of missions and how it differs from what we do in the US, with all agreeing that wherever the mission field is located, we need to have an accommodating mindset rather than a colonizing, indoctrinating mindset. Prayer, also, was agreed to be essential to the success of all missions and missioners, and the cultural and spiritual preparation and equipping of potential missioners was agreed to be of the utmost importance, on a scale equal to that of prayer.

It was noted that there is no formal process for persons in the CME Church to enter mission work through the CME

Church, and it was asked what our denomination’s vision is for our young people to be involved in the work.

No one on the panel mentioned Rev. Dr. Ore L. Spragin, Jr., the definition or description Editor that the CME Strategic Plan Team formulated and that the 2022 General Conference approved to guide the ministry of the CME Church. From last December to this date, it seems that the missions initiative of The CME Strategic Plan, now renamed Bold Steps, has gotten lost or dropped somewhere along the way, and our church is now trying to reinvent or repeat the work that has already been done.

Is it that the message of the Strategic Core Team (about 50 persons consisting of the bishops, general and connectional officers, members of the Commission on Life and Witness, and selected others from each episcopal district) was misunderstood, or was it never received because it was not how some would define or describe missions? Yes, words and definitions are important, but are we going to continue to argue over words and impede the work until our way becomes the way, or can we see our way through to not only allow but also participate in what has been set before us? Recognizing that prior to and with the general conference came both unexpected and anticipated changes in leadership at all levels, the portion of the church that desires to participate in missions awaits specific direction that aligns with Bold Steps. The members want to see and participate in Bold Steps in action.

If we as a church body continue to squabble over definitions, we will never accomplish any substantial missions work. We must come together in one accord, praying for each other and growing close in the bonds of love and the unity of the Spirit.

To that end, despite what is not clear and what has not been, I hasten to add that enough direction has already been given that SOMETHING can be done even if it is not the fullness of BOLDNESS. Do what you can come up with in your corner of the world to design or participate in specific projects to meet the spoken needs of a non-US population, or even the foreigner among you, for a definite period of time. And, as you are given information and opportunities, support the creation and sustainability of CME congregations in non-US countries.

Is it not time for us to move beyond Martin’s dream?

Othal Hawthorne Lakey In a sermon at the CME Unity Summit in New Orleans a few days before the commemorative March on Washington marking the 60th Anniversary of the 1963 March, Bishop Sylvester Williams used an illustration that provides an appropriate lens for viewing both events.

He said that the human tendency is to picture events as a still photo rather than a video. Though the photo brings forth precious memories, it does not capture the circumstances that brought it about nor subsequent events it might have precipitated. A biblical text validating the truth of the bishop’s illustration is Matthew 17:1-4, known as the transfiguration of Jesus.

Jesus had carried Peter, James, and John to a mountain where he was “transfigured”: clothing became as bright as the sun, and Moses and Elijah appeared with him. The biblical meaning is that Jesus fulfills the Mosaic law and the message of the prophets. When the disciples awoke from shock, Peter cried out, “Lord, let us build three shrines here: one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” Peter wanted to capture the moment, make it a holy shrine to which they might come and worship. But Jesus said, “No.” He knew that the realities of the valley below, as well as the powers and principalities of a world beyond, awaited them.

In many ways our commemorations of that August 28, 1963, reflect Peter’s desire on the Mount of Transfiguration. Like him, we want to capture that moment when 250,000 black Americans caught, at least for a little while, the attention of a nation, for an instant pricked its conscience, and, maybe for a moment, inspired its soul. There is no blame for the insatiable desire of a people so beleaguered and oppressed to capture the ethos of that day, erect a shrine around its memory, and enhanced by his martyrdom, listen incessantly to Martin Luther King’s memorable, “I have a dream!”. But as Bishop Williams cautions, that memorable scene at the Lincoln Mall is not a still photo; and as Jesus curbed Peter’s impulse to enshrine his moment of revelation, the vicissitudes of history bids us to move beyond Martin’s dream.

Episcopacy • In 1963 segregation by race was legal in the South and a de facto reality in many other parts of the nation. “Colored” or “White Only” signs designated if and where Negroes, as we were known, could eat, ride, live, go to school, get care when sick – and even use the rest room.

• Though a significant part of the population, Negroes were virtually invisible in public arenas such as movies and television. Roles in movies were as menial servants or comedic buffoons.

Television, coming into its own was Lilly white, as per Leave it to Beaver and The Brady Bunch epitomized. And black faces in advertising commercials were unheard of. The national presence of Negroes was primarily through Ebony magazine and Jet. • In the world of professional and collegiate sports African American participation was tokenism for the one and virtually non-existent for the other.

• Presence in the body politic consisted of Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. and Charles Diggs, Jr. in congress; no black senators; nor the Supreme Court.

• In 1963, the major cities of America— New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Houston, Chicago— all had white mayors and were dominated by white city councils even though populations were becoming increasingly black.

These were the realities in 1963 when 250,000 Negroes gathered at the Lincoln Memorial. It was within that context that Martin Luther King, Jr. proclaimed a dream, deeply rooted in the American dream, that one day America would live up to its creed, “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.”

His dream of the day his children would be judged by the “content of their character rather than the color of their skin” moved all who heard to rejoice and be glad.

And his cry, “Let freedom ring!” from Stone Mountain, Georgia to Lookout Mountain, Tennessee, bespoke for a people a hope though unborn had not yet died.

However, that was sixty years ago. The “course of human events” —to use Abraham Lincoln’s phrase— altered decisively conditions out of which Martin’s dream came, as well as the people to whom it was directed.

Connectional Interests • Tragically, in 1968 Martin Luther King, Jr. himself was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee.

• Legal segregation and impediments to the right to vote were eliminated in the Civil Rights acts signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964 and 1965.

• The prominence of black Americans in all areas of the public arena is ubiquitous. Virtually every movie made features African Americans as stars or co-stars —not to mention block-buster films produced by and featuring blacks. Television is saturated with black news reporters and anchors, hosts, and hostesses on every network, in all sit-coms, popular series, and as commentators. It appears that in every TV commercial (or at least every other one) some black or blacks make an appearance.

• From all indications, blacks are the sine qua non of the world of music. Almost monthly the majority in the top ten in virtually every music genre are black.

•African Americans dominate professional and collegiate sports —including golf, tennis, and gymnastics. (The exception is hockey, which, one observer commented, will also be the case as soon as someone figures out how to warm up the ice!)

In 2019 the quarterbacks in the NCAA college football championship game were black; and the quarterbacks in the 2023 Superbowl were black.

• In 2008 Barack Obama was elected the 44th President of the United States —and re-elected in 2012. And he, it must be noted was judged by the content of his character rather than the color of his skin!

• Presently, Kamala Harris, a black woman, is Vice-President of the United States, and Hakeem Jeffries is the Minority Leader in the House of Representatives. The Secretary of Defense, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Chair of the Council of Economic Advisers, and the White House Press Secretary are African American.

• There are now 62 members of the Congressional Black Caucus, three members of the U. S. Senate, and two black Supreme Court Justices. The mayors of New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Chicago, and Atlanta are African American.

Episcopacy From the vistas of 2023, then, much of that for which our fathers and mothers sighed and the dream Martin articulated so eloquently— that august day has come to pass. Freedom does ring from Stone Mountain in Dekalb County, Georgia, of which most of its citizens and the CEO are African American and Congressman Hank Johnson is the representative. And even in Tennessee where Lookout Mountain can be found, the peals of freedom are heard in the state legislature as two young black members were expelled, not for agitating for the civil rights of black people, but for gun legislation to save the lives of white children.

It is said that as Martin Luther King was preparing to close his speech, Mahalia Jackson, sitting on the platform with him whispered; “What about the dream, Martin? What about the dream?” That might be our question sixty years later. But when we look closer, the answer might be in the dream itself. Martin said that his dream was rooted deep in the hope that America would live up to its creed. It might be that God’s call to African Americans is to move beyond Martin’s dream by helping America remember and rekindle its foundational creed: All persons are created equal.

A year or so before the March on Washington, this writer served as chair of the educational committee of the Urban League of Portland, Oregon. It so happened that our committee invited Martin Luther King, Jr. to speak In Portland. The event was held at the municipal auditorium, which was packed. Following the event my wife (Narsis) and I were invited by Dr. O. B. Williams, Pastor of the Vancouver Avenue Baptist Church, and a friend of Dr. King, to a small reception in his home as we waited for the time for Dr. King’s plane to depart. To top it off we were invited to ride to the airport with him. It was a unique privilege to share “small talk” with such a personality during his “down” time. As Dr. King gathered his bag and shook our hands in farewell and walked into the airport, the stirring climax of his address that night came to mind. For some 30 minutes he had described his hope of brotherhood for this nation, closing with the assurance that when that day comes, “The morning stars will sing together, and the sons of God will shout for joy.”

Though that day has not yet come, were he alive today he would be pleased with the progress we have made. xxx December 2023 • The Christian Index

"Power Outages"

Editor's notes on an ordination sermon delivered by Senior Bishop Paul A.G. Stewart, Retired - July 18, 2023 Based on Acts 1:8 - "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." (NIV)

I. When there are power outages, things don't work the way they should. They don't function properly. [He recalled the time when his family and community were in an ice storm and had no power for three long days. They were in a terrible fix.] But when two common-looking men showed up, they did what was necessary to restore our power, to restore power to us. Oh, what joy we had when the power was restored.

One of the worst things that can happen to a preacher is to be all dressed up, good-looking robe, new certificate ... and no power. When your power is restored, you can do what is commanded and do it with joy ... tithing, pastoring, etc.

II. The disciples referenced in Acts had spent time with Jesus and seen him do all kinds of miracles, but they still had power outages, e.g. when they were unable to heal a child who had a deaf and dumb spirit. Jesus cast the spirit out, and turning to his disciples said, "This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting." (Mark 9:29, KJV) III. To overcome power outages, you need to obey God. To do otherwise is wasting time, but obedience must be accompanied by faith.

Waiting is not a quick affair. The disciples in Acts waited fifty days. We need to obey even when it gets hard.

Some of our church programs are ineffective because we will not obey and put in the effort. Our children are suffering and hurting others because of our lack of power. But God has promised to be with us and to be our everything. He calls us to labor and to come to him and he will give us rest.

IV. We also need to create harmony in our churches if we are going to have power. We are not going to have any continuance in power if we are harboring or ignoring our disagreements, dissensions, and failures to forgive. Satan is constantly sending something or somebody to keep you from getting on one accord. But to be on one accord is to be in prayer and supplication; to plead with God. As a pastor, you have to deal with your unforgiving spirit. The preacher needs to help create accord by spending time with God in prayer and forgiving those who are against the preacher. Only God can help you get over your hurts, ambitions, and pride! Only God!! We need to be thankful for what the Lord has brought us from and out of. We need to be so thankful for that the Lord saved us ... rescued us ... forgave us ... redeemed us ... healed us ... cleansed us ... sent us ... protected us ... So thankful! Yes! Jesus said for us to be wise as serpents and harmless as doves. "He that humbles himself shall be exalted." And when God lifts you up, nobody ...!!

V. Finally, to be restored from power outages, we need to stay connected to Jesus. The apostles stayed connected to Jesus after the resurrection. The Lord went in and out among them until the time of his resurrection.

VI. After Hurricane Ivan it took 30,000 people from five different states working in an orderly fashion over a period of time to get the State of Florida reconnected. But I'm so glad it doesn't take all that when we need to be reconnected. No governor's decree or Presidential declaration. all it takes is Jesus. He said to wait on him, and you shall ...

"Would you be free from the burden of sin? There's power in the blood. Would you ... be free from passion and sin ... be whiter than snow ... do service ... live daily his praises to sing ...? There's power ... wonder-working power ... in the blood!! Won't he do it?! Can't he do it?!

"This joy I have, the world didn't give it, and the world can't take it away. But it's Jesus!! It's Jesus!! It's Jesus!!

BE BOLD: Face Now-Embrace Next-See New Having a Living Faith!

We are the children of God, heirs to the throne of Jesus and empowered by the Holy Spirit as readers of the Bible. What is the benefit of atending prayer mee�ngs, Bible study, conferences, and workshops if we don’t have Faith in God? John Wesley lamented his crisis of faith to a friend named Peter Bohler, suggesting that he should quit preaching because he “had no faith.” Bohler suggested a different path. He said, “Preach faith until you have it.”

If I could suggest one takeaway from Bohler’s quote just for this ar�cle, it would be to suggest that we must live faith.

The difficul�es of life will come, but our response as believers must be grounded in faith. Beloved, during this fall season, our faith should not be to can, store, or shelve our faith un�l an appointed �me because that appointed �me is now.

A Faith That Moves Mountains In our current day reality, we must see mountains in our lives only as temporary obstacles to our des�ny. We must ask ourselves, where do we put our faith? The crisis of Wesley’s day may not be much different from the batle with one's faith in which we may ques�on our faith. When our human condi�on conflicts with our spiritual reality we must be willing to fight in faith. We must understand that it takes faith to witness and to share the Word of God, to grow our churches, and even to love those whom we deem as unlovable.

A Faith of Witnessing In our faith, we learn to follow God. So, to follow God do we need faith? Yes, absolutely! We are called to be witnesses in various places, but witnesses to, and of what? We did not actually witness the birth of Jesus, his life, death, or resurrec�on, but we believe by faith. Wesley’s lament in crisis would have caused him to quit but thank God for friends like Bohler who remind us not to give up. Evangelism and Missions are moments of faith. At �mes we may not see the fruit it produces but we must not be quiet. For what benefit to the body of Christ and the Kin-dom (inten�onal) of God is qui�ng? Hymn 222, “We Come This Far by Faith” reminds us, “We have come this far by faith, leaning on the Lord, Trus�ng in His holy Word, He's never failed us yet. Singin' oh, oh, oh, can't turn a-round, we’ve come this far by faith” and helps us on our journey. I challenge you in your quiet �me to meditate on the words of the hymn and even to sing it, then ask yourself, “Where do I put my faith?”

Digital Risk Management for the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church Dr. Theresa Duhart, General Secretary/Chief Information Officer Department of Communication and Information Technology

This article is a follow-up to the CIT Tech Talk in September 2023 that addressed digital risk management for the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, and safeguarding, preserving and storing church data. The presentation defined digital risk management; addressed, assessed, monitoring and treating digital risks; tips for appropriate storage of church data; cloud platforms for data storage; and provided a digital risk assessment checklist.

Digital Risks There are many types of digital risks that are a result of digital transformation and new technologies. MARION SCIPIO VESPER HOUR CELEBRATIONS

PAST Mrs. Marion Scipio, the wife of the late Rev. Isaiah Scipio was more than a Minister’s wife. She was a caring advocate for the Minister’s wives throughout the CME Connection. She loved to take new Minister Wives under her wing and mentor them. Back in her day, there were no male spouses. We were a spoke on the Missionary Wheel and our primary functions were: 1) to raise funds for the Widow’s Mite; and 2) to provide religious tracks in the local churches.

Under the Missionaries, the Widows Mite money was paid out every four years to widows across the connection. Marion Scipio started a new day for Minister Wives. She felt that the wives shouldn’t just sit back in a corner smiling and agreeing with everything but should say something. She knew we had a special calling. We were called as helpmeets to God’s chosen Servant, and we needed a support group. We needed to be in fellowship with each other and we needed to be heard.

Mrs. Scipio became a fervent advocate for Ministers’ Wives throughout the connection, so it was no surprise when she became the first Secretary of the Ministers Wives under the Missionaries. If she would have lived beyond 1995, she would have been delighted to know that in 1995, the CME Church commissioned and ordained the Ministers’ Spouses Widows and Widowers Department, which includes men, and that the Widows’ Mite money is now paid out every year in December to Widows and Widowers throughout the connection.

LANE COLLEGE ANNOUNCES DIRECTOR OF ALUMNI AFFAIRS Lane College is pleased to announce De'Shawn Barnes as Director of Alumni Affairs. Barnes received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 2022. Previously, Barnes served as an Enrollment Counselor in the Office of Enrollment Management, where his focus was to reach and guide students and parents through each step of the admissions and enrollment process and represent the College at college fairs, expos, and private visits.

"I am elated to have been appointed to lead the Office of Alumni Affairs at my alma mater," Barnes said. I am looking forward to engaging with our esteemed alumni. I am also excited to make a positive contribution in this area and excited to be a part of the ongoing progress at the college.

As Director of Alumni Affairs, Barnes will help communicate the college's accomplishments and upcoming events with alumni. He will work closely with the Director of Annual Fund and the National Alumni Association in fundraising projects and cultivate relationships with alumni.

"De'Shawn has a personal understanding of Lane's alumni as one of the College's most important strengths," Darlette Carver Samuels, Chief of Staff and Vice President of Institutional Advancement said. Barnes, a native of West Memphis, Arkansas, has been a fixture at Lane College starting from the time he set foot on the campus as a student leader. Barnes served as President of the Student Government Association, President of Phi Beta Lambda Business Fraternity Incorporated, and Presidential Scholar Leader for the Power of Potential Scholarship Program. He was selected among top scholars as a 2022-2023 White House Scholar with the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities. In addition, he was also an award-winning lead residential assistant for one of the largest residence halls on campus.

Miles College President, Bobbie Knight, Gifts $100,000 to Comprehensive Campaign Fundraiser Written by Mya Jolly Miles College, over the course of 125 years, has played a pivotal role in the education of diverse communities, with a particular emphasis on people of Color, thereby positively influencing Western Jefferson County, Fairfield, and its surrounding community. Moreover, the College has actively engaged in and hosted events and initiatives during the Civil Rights Movement on its campus, serving as a steadfast pillar of safety and cultural stabilization for present and future generations.

In its nascent stages, Miles College exhibited a notable majority of female enrollees, culminating in the graduation of Mrs. Willie Selden McDaniel in May 1918, marking her as the first woman to attain a bachelor's degree from Miles Memorial College. During the academic year 1909-1910, the College educated 139 female students out of a total enrollment of 158. Despite being an institution that continuously has a high enrollment of female students, it was not until 2019 that Miles College welcomed its first female President, with the interim selection and subsequent permanent appointment of Bobbie Knight. Miles College’s current student body is currently 52% females and 47% males. Notably, upon assuming the presidency, Knight's leadership prompted a transformative financial upswing for the institution, catalyzed by a generous $1 million donation from NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley.

President Knight's tenure has not only been marked by her success in securing significant contributions from major corporations, donors, and sponsors but also by her financial commitment to the student body.

At the 2023 Homecoming halftime presentation, President Knight, alongside first gentleman Gary Burley, gifted a substantial sum of $100,000 to the ongoing Miles College Comprehensive Fundraising Campaign and Community Development Fund. Launched after a commendable silent phase that secured $101 million towards the College. Paine College Receives $250,000 Grant from Bank of America Paine College [Augusta, Georgia,] recently received a $250,000 grant from Bank of America that was initially announced on September 8, 2023 during the Opening Fall Convocation held in the Gilbert-Lambuth Memorial Chapel. Earlier during a press conference held in June 2023 on the grounds of the 141-year old institution, College officials announced the historic partnership with Bank of America, education consultant EAB, the United Negro College Fund (UNCF), Augusta National Golf Club, the Community Foundation of the CSRA [Central Savannah River Area], and the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. The collaborating partners pledged support of a ten-year transformation plan (Plan) designed to preserve, elevate, and transform Paine College into a premier liberal arts institution and a school of choice for students seeking a college degree.

"At the heart of this partnership lies the generosity of all our partners who possess a collective belief that Paine College has enormous value and is needed beyond the boundaries of the CSRA," commented Michael Thurmond, Chairman of the Board of Trustees. "Paine College is on the path of transformational sustainability."

"Our partnership with Paine College is instrumental for workforce development efforts in Augusta and surrounding communities," said Ora Parish, president, Bank of America Augusta-Aiken. "Bank of America is committed to finding solutions and providing resources to help people succeed."

Bank of America's gift will underwrite critical services provided by EAB, an education research and advisory firm.

EAB will serve as project leaders and work with Paine College to leverage many of the same best practices the company has used to boost student and institutional success at more than 2,500 partner institutions. EAB will work closely with the transformation team leader from Paine who will drive and oversee the Plan.

"Generous donations of this kind demonstrate that Paine is a sound investment and inspire philanthropic support. The ongoing partnership between Bank of America and Paine College also demonstrates a shared commitment to enhancing the College's offerings that will attract a more diverse group of students who otherwise might not have had the opportunity to pursue a college degree.

During the height of the pandemic, Bank of America awarded over $65,000 to Paine to establish the first Hybrid Interactive SMART Classroom on the campus that facilitated both in-person and virtual classes. Since 2020, Bank of America has continued to donate personal protective equipment and supplies to help mitigate COVID at Paine.

Bank of America's grant is yet another step forward in advancing the Plan that will include hiring an executive-level Transformation Team Leader to guide the overall initiative. This partnership will help shape effective strategies providing a vehicle for businesses, industries, communities and higher education to jointly address the many challenges that impact the communities they serve.

The Crowning of the Queen On Thursday, October 12, Miss A'Nayzia Jefferson officially ascended her throne as she was crowned Miss Texas College at her coronation in the historic Martin Hall Auditorium. As the daughter of Ms. Tona Lewis and Mr. Marcel Jefferson, Miss Jefferson hails from Rusk, Texas, and is a member of Temple of Praise Baptist Church.

Miss Jefferson arrived at Texas College by way of the University of Arkansas at Cossatot, where she earned an Associate of Arts degree, as well as served as a student ambassador and member of the Lady Colts Women's Basketball team. Since her arrival at Texas College, she has excelled both in and out of the classroom.

As a 21-year-old lovely, bright, and gifted young lady, Miss Jefferson is a senior, majoring in Criminal Justice with a 3.6 grade point average. She realized at an early age that her calling in life was that of service. Thus, following her graduation from Texas College, she aspires to become a homicide detective, fulfilling her longtime desire for a meaningful career in law enforcement.

As can be observed, she is a phenomenal leader amongst her peers, participating in a multitude of organizations. Miss Jefferson is a proud member of the Texas College Women's Basketball Team and the Texas College Choir, as well as Krimson Kourt, Incorporated. And now, she joins the ranks of campus royalty, donning the Miss Texas College crown.

Miss Jefferson undoubtedly epitomizes the Texas College Core Value of Community Service. She believes that pouring into the community and giving back is vital, as evidenced by her countless hours spent volunteering at local schools reading to students, as well as training students in basketball.

Miss Jefferson's motto is "Let go of who you think you're supposed to be and embrace who you are." She contextualizes this self-worth sentiment, expressing, "Trying to live up to everyone else's expectations will drive you to insanity. You are enough!"

What a great day to kick off the South Columbus-Cordele District (SCCD) Laity and MTM Fellowship Breakfast located in the Jernigan-Jordan and Lyles Fellowship Hall on a cool Fall morning on Saturday, October 7, 2023. St. James CME Church, Columbus, where Rev. Dr. Paul L. Brown serves as pastor, was the host site, and the presiding elder is Rev. Lavisha Williams.

The Scripture for the fellowship was 2 Timothy 2:24-26, “Laity Being Bold in Reaching, Teaching and Equipping Generations for Service.”

We started the morning with opening remarks given by Bro. William Kendrick, Sr., District and Local Lay Leader in SCCD and the great hymn, “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms.”

We were excited to have Sierra Andrews Thompson, a product of the SCCD, deliver a powerful challenge to the Lay members of the great Zion as we continue to strive toward the mark of Being Bold.

Mrs. Thompson was recently selected as the Co-Chair of the West Georgia Region Board of Christian Education and Formation for Training (BOCE&F).

“WE’RE MORE THAN CONQUERORS” GREENVILLE/TEXARKANA DISTRICT FALL LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT TRAINING Submitted by Geraline Ray, Reporter

On September 9, 2023, the Greenville/Texarkana District of the Eighth Episcopal District, the East Texas Region, began their fall development training for the new conference year. Rev. Anthony Ware, Pastor of Hopewell Temple CME, was the worship leader who called the church to order. The theme was, “More Than Conquerors,” based on Romans 8:28, NLT. Our music ministry team was headed up by Linda Lawson, Director), Wesley Chapel CME and Kirby Merritt, pianist for Mt. Lebanon CME Church.

Elder Diana Casteel, Greenville/Texarkana District, presented the Morning Glory, and the Time of Decision was presented by Rev. Richard Tennison of St. Paul CME Church, Atlanta, Texas.

Elder Casteel said, “When nothing seems to be changing for the good in your life, you often ask, ‘Where is God?’ amid your challenge. You are human, so God seems distant, and it seems as if He does not care. You need to be reminded that the Lord you serve will take care of you, even amid your challenges.”

The Elder expounded further, telling us, “Paul’s scripture does not say that all things will be perfect. If you are a follower of God, you have a wonderful future ahead of you. God’s love is unmatched; He will take care of you! She preached until she had exhausted the Word unto us.

The training, using the book, Start with Why, by Simon Sinek was presented by a panel composed of Rev. Shalanda Williams, Pastor of Mt. Lebanon CME Church; Tina Bronson, wife of Rev. Shawn Bronson, Christian Chapel CME; Rev. Tamica Godfrey-Hill, Pastor of Hickory Hill CME; and Rev. Wilburt Hall, Jr., Pastor of Mt. Zion CME, Daingerfield, Texas.

To establish a focal point, the panel had previously set up sites around the church with 0-1; 9-19;

and 20+ to represent the groups whose marriage years were listed in those parameters and they asked us to sit where the appropriate sign was posted. Each panel member then explained how they met their significant other and “why” it resulted in marriage. Any questions were to be posted on the “Parking Lot” posters for questions to be answered afterward. Church members were issued a golden plate and asked to draw three concentric circles within it. To keep the audience

Submissions focused and thoughtful, written in each circle was the word “why,” “how,” or “what.”

Some nuggets gleaned from the presentation were: What makes your “why” significant? Defining your “why” and pursuing your “why” can be achieved, but you may experience fear of failure; lack of support; and external obstacles that require you to encourage yourself.

There may also be a lack of resources such as time, money, and energy that need to be sowed into your church assignment.

Lack of motivation can also block us, but what God puts together, no man can put asunder. Changing circumstances is another hindrance. Remember, “why” is what you believe.

“How” …Once you know what you believe, you can answer the how. Ask questions about how things occur. When you drop and lose parts of the church, you miss the “how.” Be dedicated and not obligated. Stand on God’s grace.

How can you get people to commit? A whoop and a squall might get people to listen, but you want

them to remember! You want duct tape and not a pasty glue memory. You need something that will foster a relationship with God. You have always been told what to do. Even though you consistently say the Apostle’s Creed, do you know what it means? It’s like consistently bringing chicken to our church dinners. Not everyone likes chicken. Stop consistently doing things without knowing their meaning!

Stop trying to create members and start trying to make disciples! You must connect ministry to business.

Above all, do everything as unto God! Bend, but don’t break. Put your faith in God! Be honest, open and transparent. Let others know that you have not always been the person that you are today. Authenticity is the key. Check out Matthew 15:24; 11:1-30; and 10:5.

Finally, what are you doing as a body to help others’ understanding? Reach the people outside the church. Ask what they disliked at your church and how your church could improve itself to be more outsiderfriendly. If you can stand criticism, you will be on the road to bringing in those disciples we all want.

Edwards Named Georgia DA of the Year Submitted by Rev. Ore Spragin Pastor, Hines Memorial CME Church Editor, The Christian Index

Greg Edwards, who has served as the District Attorney (DA) for the Dougherty Judicial Circuit since his election to the office in 2008, was named in July 2023 the Georgia District Attorney of the Year by the Georgia District Attorneys’ Association. Much earlier, in July 2006, he was named the Georgia State Prosecuting Attorney Council's “Assistant District Attorney of the Year.” He was selected from among over 1200 prosecutors in the state who were eligible to receive this annual recognition and was its first African American recipient. Attorney Edwards is the first recipient of both highest prosecutor recognitions for the State (i.e., Assistant DA and DA of the Year).

After being elected District Attorney in 2008, he was re-elected without opposition in 2012, 2016, and 2020. He is the first African American to serve as the District Attorney for the Albany-Dougherty Judicial Circuit. Edwards has practiced law since 1983. His legal career began with the Georgia Legal Services Program in 1984. In 1988 he entered private practice and in 1990 was appointed as an Assistant District Attorney. He served as the Chief Assistant District Attorney beginning in 1995, and he has also served as a Special Assistant United States Attorney.

A 1979 graduate of Albany State University, Edwards received his Bachelor of Arts degree in History, with a minor in Political Science. He earned his law degree from the Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University in 1983. He is a 1989 graduate of Leadership Albany and a 2003 graduate of Leadership Georgia. He is a member of the Prosecuting Attorneys' Council of Georgia, and he has served on the Board of Governors of the Georgia Bar Association.

Attorney Edwards’ civic mindedness extends beyond the courtroom. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Albany Civil Rights Institute and is a member of the Albany Rotary Club and the Criterion Club of Albany. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Georgia District of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and has served with the Albany-Dougherty affiliate of Communities in Schools and the Albany Advocacy Resource Center (ARC). distinguished honors, he is the recipient of the Dedicated Board Member Service award for the ARC. Greg Edwards is a member of the Lawyer's Foundation of Georgia, and he has previously served on the Board of Directors of the Georgia Legal Services Program.

He is a past president of the Dougherty Circuit Bar Association, past president of the C.B. King Bar Association, and has been a member of the Georgia Alliance of African American Attorneys. He served as the President of the District Attorney’s Association of Georgia for 2014-2015, and he has also served as an instructor for the National College of District Attorneys at the National Advocacy Center in Columbia, South Carolina.

As a result of high peer recognition and professional achievement, Greg Edwards was named a Georgia “Super Lawyer” for 2006-2007 by Atlanta Magazine. He also received the 2007 Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Community Service Award. In May 2008 he received the Georgia Criminal Justice Coordinating Committee’s “Eagle Award” as an advocate for the rights of victims within the judicial system. In January 2010 he received the Albany Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration “Dream Award for Community Service,” and in March 2011 he was presented with the “Ruth T. Kimbrough Distinguished Service Award” for community service by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. In 2012 he was presented with the “Edward A. Freeman” award as an outstanding alumnus of Leadership Albany.

In March 2016 he was presented the inaugural “Mattie S. Hill Service Award” as a continuing partner in community service by Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority. He is a 2018 recipient of the Robert H. Benham, State Bar of Georgia, Community Service Award.

Greg Edwards, a life-long resident of Albany, Georgia, has served as Co-chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Hines Memorial Christian Methodist Episcopal Church of Albany, Georgia. He presently serves on the Board of Stewards and the Board of Christian Education and Formation. He is married to Regina, formerly Regina Boyd of Macon, Georgia, and they have one son, Gregory W. Edwards, Jr.

All history is a current event." - Dr. John Henrik Clarke Introduction: Remembering a Storied Legacy The story of Martin Temple Church spans a century and a half, marked by excellence, fruitfulness, and a profound impact on its community. As transitions loomed, the congregation's strength in unity was apparent, though the narrative could benefit from improved clarity and organization. Explicit transitions between sections, elaboration of the three-pronged plan, and incorporation of personal anecdotes could enhance engagement. This narrative revision aims to highlight the church's journey through closure, transition, and renewed purpose.

The Echoes of a Vibrant Legacy Martin Temple Church stood as a pillar of its community, nurturing generations with knowledge and faith. Countless individuals learned to read, write, and compute within its walls. Some pursued General Education Development Certificates after leaving high school. The church's outreach ministry produced ministers and lay leaders who embodied its divine vision. However, this illustrious history led to an unexpected conclusion.

Facing Transition: An Unavoidable Decision Regrettably, the announcement arrived: Martin Temple Church's doors would soon close after 150 years of ministry. The congregation would merge with either Cremount Temple or Beaumont Temple, ten miles away.

Reverend Jessie Manuel would guide them through this profound transition. My journey began as I stepped into the church on a Sunday morning, grappling with the challenge of helping the faithful navigate this seismic shift.

Fading Dreams and Renewed Hope The church, displaced due to storm damage and poor construction, had wandered for three years, seeking a new home. Faces were etched with fatigue from the fruitless search. The city had condemned their former sanctuary, a

place once vibrant with God's presence. An encounter with a frail elder led to the discovery of temporary refuge within an older United Methodist Church.

Stories That Bind Us: Past, Present, and Future As Sunday school lessons and worship services unfolded, I listened to stories of displacement, loss, and resilience.

Artifacts and cherished memories were left behind, but a spirited resilience endured. An elder congregation, with no church to call home, reflected on their history. Their original church site invoked memories of greatness, echoing the reverberations of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s voice. Despite the ruins, a sense of purpose emerged.

Finding Light Amidst Change Guided by a three-pronged plan revealed through prayer, the congregation embarked on a transformative journey.

First, remembering became a salve for anguish and accountability. Reflecting on the past allowed suppressed pain to surface and wounds to heal. We facilitated evenings of remembrance, where families recounted their Martin Temple experiences. They embraced past highs, lows, and the Lord's constant presence.

Embracing New Beginnings Second, prayer and vision merged. The congregation embraced the Bishop's merger vision, envisioning their wealth of experience enriching new churches. I introduced them to their new worship spaces, fostering a sense of belonging. As they embraced their new spiritual family, healing replaced pain, and joy blossomed.

Accepting God's Unfolding Plan Lastly, accepting God's will was vital. The congregation found solace in their newfound mission, bringing Christ to others through unity. Despite challenges, faith and acceptance prevailed. A reminder to "rise" echoed, urging the congregation to move forward together.

Conclusion: Rising to a New Song In closing, Martin Temple Church's legacy endured even as its doors closed. A journey through remembrance, prayer, and acceptance led to a triumphant renewal. This narrative, with refined structure and storytelling, offers a testament to resilience, unity, and the pursuit of a new song. The transformation of Martin Temple Church exemplifies the indomitable spirit of faith, even in times of transition.

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” - Philippians 4:13 Allen Temple CME Church was the first CME church in the Pacific NW, organized on February 6, 1949. The founding fathers and mothers had a vision to build a strong foundation for future generations that thrive to this day.

Allen Temple CME Church has been a community-oriented church serving North-Northeast Portland communities through many outreach programs. All our outreach programs are operational: Emergency Aide Center, Houseless Outreach Team Program, Resurrection Drug & Alcohol Prevention & Recovery, AIDS/HIV Support Services and Social Justice Advocacy, One Church One School Tutoring. We will be opening a new day center in Summer 2022.

Allen Temple CME Church, a 9,500 square-foot, 350-member church, has been an anchor not only for the surrounding neighborhoods, but also for the City of Portland, providing support and guidance to the leadership on many problems in our urban community. The impact of gentrification has significantly left the residue of trauma from the loss of generations of African American families, housing and businesses. Through it all, the church has been the tower of stability.

No one could have foreseen that our foundation would be shaken on February 7, 2015, when an electrical fire broke out in a wall in the church basement. It was quickly extinguished, but at 10:00 p.m. a transformer exploded, and a live power line hit the roof igniting the building. The fire swept through all levels of the church. Oh, the heartbreak of watching our church burning before my eyes asking God for a lifeline during this tragedy.

He sent a nearby angel in Rev. Dr. T.A. Bethel, Senior Pastor of Maranatha Church, who said, “Come to Maranatha until you can rebuild.”

Just 24 hours later, we were praising God with another church family and taking a moment to figure out the next steps.

In 2016, plans were made to restore the church, a project much bigger than anyone could have imagined. But church members

Internationally renowned theologian joins University of Aberdeen Submitted by Jo Milne University of Aberdeen

The University of Aberdeen has further strengthened its world-leading Divinity department with the appointment of an internationally recognised scholar of modern Christian theology.

Bruce McCormack will join the University in Autumn as Professor of Systematic Theology after 30 years at Princeton Theological Seminary, latterly as Charles Hodge Professor of Systematic Theology.

A Presbyterian, Professor McCormack is interested in the history of modern theology, from Schleiermacher and Hegel through to Karl Barth. He is best known for his groundbreaking studies of the theology of Karl Barth— beginning with his book Karl Barth’s Critically Realistic Dialectical Theology: Its Genesis and Development, 1909–1936 (Clarendon Press, 1995).

He is currently undertaking a series of major studies in Christian doctrine, the first of which entitled The Humility of the Eternal Son: ‘Reformed’ Kenoticism and the Repair of Chalcedon was recently published by Cambridge University Press.

Professor McCormack’s contributions to theological scholarship have been fittingly honoured over the years by award of the Karl-Barth-Preis by the Union Evangelischer Kirchen in der EKD (1995), and receipt of an honorary doctorate from the Friedrich-Schiller University of Jena (2004).

He is a member of the General Assembly committee commissioned to write a new catechism for the Presbyterian Church (USA) and has been a member of the panel on doctrine for the Church of Scotland. A member of the Karl Barth-Stiftung in Basel, Switerzland, he is North American editor of the Zeitschrift fuer Dialektische Theologie, published in Holland.

The University of Aberdeen’s Divinity department, which has a legacy dating back to the University’s foundation in 1495, was rated top in the UK for research in the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF) and scores highly in major league tables.

Reverend Professor John Behr, head of the Department of Divinity, said: “The University of Aberdeen is delighted to welcome Bruce McCormack, an internationally recognized scholar of modern Christian theology of the 19th and 20th centuries.

“Professor McCormack is no stranger to Scotland, having begun his academic career as a Lecturer in Reformed Theology at New College in Edinburgh. We are pleased to be able to welcome him back as he takes up this new post with us here in Aberdeen and we look forward to the contributions he will make to enrich the life and work of the department.”

Blessed Assurance, Jesus Is Mine

The Story of Reverend Dr. William C. Larkin Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'"

For William Charles Larkin, the answer to that question defined his life's work, mission, and ministry. William devoted his ministry, professional and personal endeavors to ongoing efforts to improve the lives of those he encountered. His journey began in his beloved hometown in Sumter County, Alabama, on August 5, 1941, as the first child of the late Tom Larkin and the late Wilma Dumas Larkin.

A life of commitment to others was instilled in William at an early age by his loving parents who demonstrated that Christian obligation and set high moral examples that should be followed for decades to follow. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Samuel.

One might ask, who are the famous people that hail from Sumter County, Alabama. Some might say it was Ruby Pickens Tartt who helped to collect African American narratives and local musical traditions, or the Blues and Gospel Singer Vera Hall Ward. The real giant born in this rural area of Alabama was William Charles Larkin. He indeed was an academic star from grade school through his Graduate years. He accepted his call to ministry at the age of 12 and later graduated from York West End High School at the age of 15. William recognized the importance of education at an early age and succeeded in accomplishing his goals.

William immediately entered Alabama State University and graduated at the age of 19 with a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education, Social Studies, and English in 1960. During these early years he pastored small circuit churches in the Southeast Alabama Conference: Pleasant Grove and White Chapel in Troy, Alabama, and other CME churches in Lowndesboro and Cusseta, Alabama.

William kept moving up the ladder. He entered seminary at Phillips School of Theology at the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia, and graduated with a Master of Divinity in General Theology in 1963. In 1969 he received a Master of Arts in Christian Education at Colgate Rochester Divinity School, Rochester, New York. He continued at New York Theological Seminary and received the Master of Sacred Theology in Christian Education in 1970. In 1979 William obtained the Ed.D. in Educational Foundation, Urban Community, and Curriculum from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Massachusetts.

With over 57 years in the itinerant ministry in the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, William pastored numerous churches in the Fifth Episcopal District and in 1968 was appointed Presiding Elder of the Huntsville District. He pastored Brown Memorial in Louisville, Kentucky, from 1973 to 1980. [He also served] Pleasant Hill in Conyers, Georgia; Whites Chapel in Elberton, Georgia; and churches in California and Oklahoma.

Continued from previous page The Board of Trustees of Phillips School of Theology met in January 1980 and elected Dr. William C. Larkin to serve as Dean. He began his administration on February 4, 1980. Achievements made under his management include the liquidation of a $90,000 indebtedness, refurnishing the upstairs dormitory lounge, establishment of the Phillips Voice newspaper and the Phillips Bookstore, the purchase of Graves House for Phillips School of Theology female students and students with families, the creation of the Phillips School of Theology Honor Society, and a computerized record-keeping system for the bookstore. William served as Dean for ten years at Phillips School of Theology.

William's teaching and instruction continued as a professor at the Academy of Public Theology, a training school [for clergy and laity founded by Bishop Teresa E. Snorton during her leadership of the Fifth Episcopal District]. He served as Adjunct Professor at Colorado hristian University, Oral Roberts University, and the Oxford Graduate (Christian) School in Dayton, Tennessee.

To be a great writer, author, or editor, one would need patience, creativity, and focus. William possessed all these qualities. He served as Managing Editor of Echoes Sunday School Literature in Colorado Springs, which was a part of Cook Communication Ministries, Inc. William published many articles and books, and reviewed many religious publications. Some of those publications include: A History of the Women's Missionary Council, CME Church; The Carnell Rogers Story; The Harold J. McCoy Story - To God be the Glory; The Joe Davis Story; The E.P. Murchison Story, and many more. William served as Associate General Secretary of the Consultation on Church Union (COCU) in Princeton, New Jersey, and in 1972 William published articles on COCU in The Christian Index under the heading "COCU and the Black Methodist Churches."

William's disciplined life of faith, leadership and service ended October 22, 2023, but his legacy lives on in the lives of many people he touched along the way. He will be deeply missed by his devoted family and cherished friends. He will be forever loved by his wife, Mary Larkin; daughters, Daphne Diane Bridges and Charletta "Marie" Larkin-Johnson (Greg); bonus-son, Joe K. (Marie) Hardy; Bonus-daughter, Cassundra Parmer; brother, Attorney Tom Larkin (Barbara); grandchildren, Ciara Diane Bridges, Julian Richard Larkin-Bridges, Celine Marie Bridges, Jaden Eugene Jackson Bridges and James "Elliott" Johnson; bonus-grandchildren, Josceline Parmer, Diante Hardy, Jacob Palmer, Charday Hardy, Joe Hardy, Sincere Hardy, Stormi Hardy and EJ Hardy; sisters-in-law, Rosa Smith and Clara Sankey; brothers-in-law, Johnny Smith, Jr. and Edward Smith (Mary); and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Announcing the Continuation of the 2023-2024 Connectional Clinical Pastoral Education (CCPE) Program The Connectional Clinical Pastoral Education Program provides an educational experience for ministers and laypersons of all denominations who desire to enhance their professional pastoral skills and personal development but are unable to be in a traditional CPE program due to time or other restrictions. It also enables probationary ministers in the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church (CME) to meet the requirement of one unit of CPE for full connection clergy membership. This unique program brings ministers from across the country together and in small groups for interactive, reflective learning using their own community and place of ministry as the context.

Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, January 10-12, 2024 PST Pastors Conference, Atlanta, GA Monthly meetings via Zoom – TWO TIMES PER MONTH ON FRIDAY EVENING Exact Dates TBD at Orientation Final Evaluations & Graduation, at the Connectional Youth/Young Adult Conference The student is responsible for all of his/her travel, lodging and food costs at the in-person educational sessions.

The focus of this CPE program is on ministry in the congregation. Participants must have an approved place of ministry in order to complete the required hours in ministry each month of the program. The recommendation of a presiding bishop or supervising pastor is required as well. In addition to the ministry hours, attendance at all sessions is required.

There will be written assignments, readings and some internet-based assignments. The program operates under the auspices of the Academy for Public Theology through the Office of the CME Endorser. The faculty is comprised of certified CPE Supervisors and certified professional chaplains.

TUITION is $550, which includes a $50 non-refundable application fee, a $150 deposit once accepted into the program and a balance of $350 payable before the program begins. The tuition includes the required books. There is currently no scholarship program, however a payment plan can be arranged.
