The Connectional Budget and Buy-in

I have heard much talk over the past years about the rising cost of being a member of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. In fact, I frankly do not remember a time when someone was NOT talking about the budget - not necessarily the connectional budget, but how it came to them, the assessment as a member of a local church. As both a pastor and a presiding elder, I heard year after year that the budget was too high.

Is there a Biblical comparison for the assessment?

The Old Testament records the required giving of certain amounts and of offerings. These were more than sacrificial in nature (e.g., sin offerings, grain offerings, wave offerings, etc.); they were also made for the maintenance and upkeep of the temple, and for the support of the temple leadership and staff, and of the poor and needy among them. The New Testament shows the continuation of this practice, disclosing the receipt of funds for the support of Jesus' own ministry (notably given by women disciples and held in the treasury of which Judas was custodian), the collection of funds for the missionaries and teachers (though the process of collection is largely unknown), and collections for people in other churches and for the support of the poor. These necessarily meant support for people and for institutions, as well as long-term and developing ministries and short-term projects.

What is the origin of the CME Church's assessment/ apportionment/budget? The first assessment to members of the CME Church was made by the called general conference of March 1873. (Remember we were founded December 16, 1870.) The assessment of ten cents per member per year was made with the hope of undergirding a floundering Book Concern (Publishing House) and purchasing a building to house the same. In addition, the collection of funds throughout the connection for the cause of missions was authorized. The scheme of missions had not yet been concretized, but the need for missions (seemingly domestic in nature) was unquestioned.

It was understood that the success of the denomination as an organization and its mission as a legitimate Christian Church required the input of all her members. The preachers of the church knew this, and so it is that in 1877 we find them saying en masse that they will collect and report all the general funds required that year.

Is there a need for the budget and its concomitant assessments to continue? If the local churches and members do not have to participate in the Connectional Church via the paying of "conference claims" otherwise known as assessments or apportionments, what will be the "connection" of the local church to the Connection, to the body, to other

local churches and their members? What is to replace the assessment, in terms of both finance and intra-church relations and structure? Do we want the church, the CME Church, to continue to exist and not just to exist but to thrive? Do we find Rev. Dr. Ore L. Spragin, Jr., value in serving God through Editor obedient service to others? Can we do more collectively than we can individually? Does the fellowship of the church meet social as well as spiritual needs?

Are we willing to participate in the decision-making processes of the church that determine more or less how monies received are invested in the Christian witness of the CME Church?

Does it matter, and do we care? There will always be a Judas or a Simon (the sorcerer) in the church - someone who is out for their own personal gain at the expense of the faith, the faithful, and the lost. If you are filled with and led by the Holy Ghost, you can and should make a difference in the life and witness of the church, and this includes the budget.

I opened this editorial remarking that there have always been complaints that the budget is too high. Invariably, there will always be persons who feel this way. However, let me be clear that when I give or pay my apportionment in the church, I am NOT paying to be a member of the CME Church. I do not view it as a tax and do not look with favor on the saying that it is some kind of tax. The budget is more than a tax and in my opinion should not be viewed as such.

Though there have been periods in church history when the assessments on the members of the church were truly oppressed by what can legitimately be termed a church tax, Biblically speaking, God's people have always been asked and even required to make and show their commitment to God and to the community of the faithful by giving of their own resources. Active participation in the budgetary and assessment process of the Church is essential to show your personal commitment to Christ and his church, and it also connects you materially and spiritually to the church as a body and as an institution. The payment of assessments is more than a mere mechanical act or fulfillment of an obligation. The assessment, while often referred to as a bill, is more than that.

It is a spiritual testimony - a testimony of your Christian faith as you obey the commands to love one another and to "Go." Whatever the amount may be or become, don't just pay your budget to be a member; be a member who, with love and faith, gives your budget.

CHRISTIAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH 2022 GENERAL CONFERENCE COMMITTEE ON RESOLUTIONS The Committee on Resolutions is appointed by the College of Bishops in accordance with ¶206 of THE BOOK OF DISCIPLINE, REVISED 2018. The following are pertinent paragraphs from THE BOOK OF DISCIPLINE, REVISED 2018, PAGES 32-33: ¶206. There shall be a Committee on Resolutions appointed by the College of Bishops. Each Bishop shall appoint one member to the Resolutions Committee by September 1 of the year preceding the General Conference. The Presiding Bishop of the District shall publish the name of the committee member throughout the District. ¶206.1. All resolutions, memorials, and other materials contemplated for presentation to the General Conference shall be sent to the appropriate Episcopal District Resolutions Committee member on or before January 31 of the year of the General Conference. ¶206.2. Resolutions mailed, sent or given to the Episcopal District representative shall be examined by him or her to ascertain if they meet the requirements for proposed legislation (cf. ¶1500.7, §4). All resolutions requiring changes in the wording and/or legal meanings of provisions in the Discipline shall state the paragraph, section, page and language to be changed and the language to be substituted. In addition to the requirements referenced, resolutions shall not contain more than three preamble paragraphs. If the resolutions do not meet the requirements, they shall be returned for corrections.

In addition to these paragraphs from The Book of Discipline, Revised 2018, the College of Bishops has agreed upon the following regulations for the sake of uniformity: 1) Resolutions should be submitted in writing. a) Hard copies given to, mailed or emailed to the Episcopal District Representative should be typed in 12-point font, only on one side of the paper. Multiple pages should be stapled together. b) Resolutions submitted via email should be sent as an attachment in Word document format. c) The submitter of the resolution must type his/her name, address, telephone, email and local church information on each page of the resolution. d) Resolutions submitted on behalf of groups and organizations should clearly state this information and include one name as the point of contact.

“From Where I Sit …”

The Church’s Law and Retirement!

Chapter 29; ¶450, §2 of THE BOOK OF DISCIPLINE OF THE CHRISTIAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH – 2018, page 119 states, “Members of the Judicial Council, General Officers, Presiding Elders, Pastors and all other of the clergy rank shall be automatically retired at the Conference of authority nearest their seventy-fourth (74th) birthday; provided, that any Minister who has been in the itinerant service for ten (10) years or more, upon reaching the age of sixty-five (65) and upon expressing a desire to do so in writing may have the right of retirement at the next Annual Conference by vote of the clergy members in full connection. …”

Simply stated, this section describes, for all clergy persons and those lay persons who serve as Judicial Council Justices or as General Officers, the two specific occasions for retirement: 1) the optional occasion at the request of the person who is 65 and, for clergy, has served at least 10 itinerant years; and 2) the mandatory occasion which automatically occurs at the person’s conference of authority nearest their 74th birthday. Also ¶435 generally expresses a similar retirement schedule for the Bishops of the Church.

From our records, most pastors plan for their retirement at 74 or for whichever age is their mandatory date, while others opt to retire between 65 and 73. Choosing the earlier dates are often influenced by reasons of health or finance and require a request and a vote of the clergy members of their respective annual conference.

However, the mandatory date requires no explanation or justification. Whether announced, acknowledged, affirmed, or ceremonially celebrated, the act and fact of retirement OCCURS at the meeting of the conference of “authority”. Even if nothing is said or done, per the language of the Discipline, the retirement has occurred because it was “automatic” as stated in ¶450.

And although some ministers may be “continued in service” after retirement, their status is still retired and, with uninterrupted membership in the CME Church, continues to remain as retired.

A good understanding of the above is important because retirement, per the Discipline, in most cases, is a necessary step for a Retirement Participant to receive or rollover the accumulated funds in their CME Retirement account. Understanding the above explanation will help simplify, for participants of the CME Retirement Plan, the process of retirement when that time occurs. Or at least that’s the way it looks to me…

Getting Back to Basics as “We Envision Our Way Forward Taking Care of God’s Business”

The Vibrant Church In the last e-blast the question was asked, “Who Are We Becoming?” It is my hope that you thought intentionally about this question. Have you ever thought about your church being vibrant? Have you thought about your Church being a well-oiled machine from worship, ministry, and administration? Of course, there are times when we need to reimagine the effectiveness of the local church? What is the local Church called to do and become as we envision the pulpit and the pew working together helping the Church to live its best life?

Vibrant Church Initiative The “Vibrant Church Initiative” (VCI) is a look at what we have and what we need as well as all the resources that are essential for goals set forth to assist the local Church. In some ways, this initiative may be viewed as something of an umbrella wherein the goals on discipleship, stewardship and community outreach are teaming up to offer our local and connectional church a holistic approach towards revitalization of many of our congregations.

Pastors and local churches will intentionally focus on both their ministry within the life of the congregation with an outward mission and vision towards their own community context. Leaders must examine the local church and themselves from a critical lens to see who they are, given their respective make-up and context as they seek what they do best and how they will be the church given the leadership of the Holy Spirit.

Back to the Basics The vibrancy of the Church is given by Jesus the Christ who shares with his followers the desire to have a vibrant faith. A basic tenet of vibrancy is life, and this life should be more abundant. The local congregation which understands the power of the great commission (Go) and the great commandment (Love) must understand the urgency of the Vibrant Church [Initiative].

How do we envision the ministry process bringing [together] both the internal and external community of each congregation? Its aim is to assist a pastor and local congregation to both name and own who they are and who God’s Spirit is leading them to become. We can no longer overlook persons of all ages in the communities where we have a presence and potential presence. Worship needs to become more energized with the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Hearing the Clarion Call Yes, every Church can be a vibrant church! However, people, process and procedure will be different in each context. How bad do you want it? Begin now, take note of what you do well, take note of the areas the congregation struggle with. Be completely transparent and become vibrant together.

I am, thus, asking as 2021 ends and we begin afresh in 2022, that we keep the following basic practices and scriptures close to us.

STAND ON THE WORD! - Romans 1:16 (KJV) – “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

Psalm 119:46 – “I will speak of thy testimonies also before kings and will not be ashamed.”

THE FIRST INTENT in sharing Christ should not be to get others to join our church, but to get them to develop a desire to know Christ! - 1 Corinthians 1:18 (NKJV) – “For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”

REMEMBER THIS! – To Share Christ, one Must Know Christ! Grow in knowledge, grow in faith, and develop a servant’s heart. Mark 10:44-45 (44) And whoever wants to be first must be slave of all.

ALWAYS CARRY CHRIST WITH YOU AND LOOK FOR STRENGTH IN THE WORD! - Psalm 25:2 (KJV) – O my God, I trust in thee: let me not be ashamed, let not mine enemies' triumph over me.

DEVELOP STUDY HABITS! – 2 Timothy 2:15 - Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

WORK AT CATCHING, NOT CLEANING! Matthew 4:19 – Come follow me, Jesus said, and I will make you fishers of men. It is our job to help catch them; He (God) will clean them.

WORK TO BE A WITNESS IN YOUR WALK, YOUR TALK, AND YOUR ACTIONS! - Peter 3:15 - But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.

TURN INNOVATIONS INTO BASICS! - Consciously use Texting, E-mailing, Facebook, Twitter, and Snapchat for witnessing. Psalm 67:6–7, NIV - The land yields its harvest; God, our God, blesses us.

May God bless us still, so that all the ends of the earth will fear him.

FORGIVE AND TURN THE PAGE! - Remember that we cannot properly witness if we allow past hurts to dominate our lives. Ephesians 4:32 - Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

Peace In God / Your Will Be Done "Yet not My will, but Yours be done."

Luke22:42 Many things come our way in life - unexpected disappointments and trials - and often we cannot see any reason for them. But whether they are major or minor problems, we need to handle them all.

The Lord's love for us is endlessly tender and encouraging. He wants us to trust where we cannot see, and it will not be a reckless leap in the dark, as sincere trust and faith says, "I know for certain that God's will is best for me." This kind of faith leaves the choice up to God, with the words His Son taught us, "Your will be done!"

Eternal God and Father, thank You for sending Your Son to come and teach me what it means to let Your will be done in my life.

Let Your Spirit assist me in this. Amen Walking With God / Through Him Who Strengthens Me Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him. Jeremiah 17:7 Everybody is searching for peace. No one can avoid the strain of life or the stress it brings with it. Jesus radiated love, serenity and peace; no matter how turbulent or chaotic the circumstances were around Him. This was the result of His intimate relationship with His Father. Jesus regularly withdrew in solitude to pray and to pour out His heart to His Father. Then He was able to return to a stormy life with the peace of heaven in His heart.

Whatever life may have in store for you, you will be victorious in His strength because, "I can do everything through Him who gives me strength" (Phil. 4:13).

You are my Keeper, O Lord. I place myself under Your control and in Your care. That is why I am assured of Your Peace. Amen.

Peace In God / I Know for Certain He will never leave you nor forsake you.

Deuteronomy 31:6 It is important to have someone you can rely on and turn to in times of trouble. Yet sometimes even the closest friends can disappoint you.

Our Lord and Master will never let us down, however. If you need comfort, the Lord will comfort you. If you need inspiration for a difficult task, the Lord will inspire you.

If the road ahead of you seems to be strewn with problems, concerns and troubles, then ask the Lord to help you and you will discover that He is as faithful as His Word promises.

God my Father, thank You that I have the assurance that You will never leave me nor forsake me.

Forgive me for the times when I've failed and disappointed You. Amen.

Walking With God / Christ's Peace - My Inheritance "Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let it be afraid."

John 14:27 This world's peace is a poor reflection of the peace that God gives to His children. The peace of God is the most wonderful peace imaginable. It affects every area of our lives. It is constant and does not change according to our moods.

But this peace requires a steadfast faith in Jesus Christ, who is the source of this peace. Such peace banishes worry, because that is the weapon the devil uses to undermine our peace. Jesus prohibits fear, because fear is the enemy of all peace.

I praise and thank You for the peace that conquers the fear and anxiety in my life. Amen.

THANK GOD FOR CHRISTMAS Christmas commemorates the birthday of Jesus Christ. “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior which is Christ the Lord.” St. John 2:10 Christmas tells me that God loves me. That God sent His only begotten Son into the world to save me from my sins. Wise Men still worship Him, with their lives and with their gifts.

No wonder the message announced to earth that glorious night is the message we believers have been commissioned to go and tell every human being on earth. Let’s not get Christmas confused with partying, elves, Santa, Rudolph, and commercialization. Let’s use these days to “keep in touch,” express the thank you’s to those who mean so much to us, and sing the praises of Him who called us out of darkness into His marvelous light.

Do you have an exceptional young person who is dedicated to their church, school and community? Does your youth leader go beyond the call of duty for the young people? We have created a space to honor them.

The Connectional Youth Ministry is pleased to announce CYM Salutes, a program distinguishing outstanding individuals in the area of Youth Ministry within the CME Church who are making a difference. The Youth of the Month and Youth Leader of the Month program will recognize individuals who demonstrate exemplary characteristics both in church and within the community.

CRITERIA To be nominated as Youth of the Month or Youth Leader of the Month, the candidate must be an active member of the CME Church. The candidate cannot receive the award more than once between November 2021 – May 2022.

NOMINATIONS Candidates can be nominated by any member, youth or adults, of the CME Church each month. Each person can only nominate one (1) youth (12-17) and one (1) youth leader per month. Share a brief description of how this nominee exemplifies excellent character and helps young people become better leaders, citizens, and/or members in the CME church. A Letter From Birmingham Jail

Under the centuries-old trees with Spanish moss and nestled between the historic and the current courthouses of Glynn County in Brunswick, Georgia, African American pastors from across the country gathered in the square where the enslaved were once sold on the courthouse steps to join in united forces to offer prayer to the family of Ahmaud Arbery. This was a visible and audible response to the egregious statement from the defense attorney who said that black pastors were not wanted in the courtroom.

Standing tall and gallantly in the midst of this latest example of social injustice were members of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. The group led

by Bishop Thomas Louis Brown, Sr., Presiding Prelate of the Sixth Episcopal District (Georgia), along with Bishop Kenneth W. Carter, Presiding Prelate of the 11th Episcopal District (eastern and southern Africa); Bishop Sylvester Williams, Presiding Prelate of the Third Episcopal District (Michigan-Indiana, Southeast Missouri-Illinois-Wisconsin, and Kansas-Missouri); and Rev. Leon Moore, General Secretary of Evangelism and Mission; also included many presiding elders and pastors.

The gathering was a call to action by Rev. Al Sharpton, the National Action Network, and preachers across the State of Georgia. Persons sharing in the vigil included the Rev. Jesse Jackson, Founder of Rainbow PUSH; Dr. Jamal Bryant of New Birth Baptist Church; Bishop Reginald Jackson, Presiding Prelate of the Sixth Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church; Martin Luther King III; and the parents of Ahmaud Arbery.

Bishop Brown, who is actively involved and engaged in social action concerns in the State was moved to lead the delegation and to join in the prayer vigil with faith leaders (including his fellow bishops) understanding that this has been the hallmark of the CME Church. Social activism is in the DNA of the church and must clearly be in the foresight of the church.

The continued systematic oppression of “people of color” is visible and evident throughout the nation and in various courtrooms, statehouses, boardrooms, and in congress. Bishop Brown recounted a memory from his childhood where a black man was shot by a gas station owner who accused the man of owing him money. The man was murdered, and no justice was brought forth.

These and other searing memories propel Bishop Brown and others to press forward in the fight for social action.

Heard across the vigil in conversations is that the reality is that it is not “black pastors” that are a threat; but the ability of black pastors to pray, to tap into their congregations to pray, and to mobilize them along with the power of the Holy Spirit is what many deem threatening. The prayer vigil was a reminder that, in the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,“injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

As it moves beyond its 150th anniversary and marches to Cincinnati for the 2022 General Conference, the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church is acutely aware that “Social Justice” must and continues to be at the top of the agenda for the church. Pastors must continually use its platform to inform, preach and urge their congregations to pray and then get up and “do something.”

State Historical Marker Honors Phillips CME Church Submitted by Mattie D. Thomas, PhD North Central Alabama Region/ Fifth Episcopal District

A state historical marker was recently unveiled in Huntsville, Alabama, honoring Phillips Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, the city's second oldest African American congregation. The marker was installed at 200 Davis Circle, near the site where the church was organized in 1865.

When the congregation relocated to Winchester Road, Redstone Federal Credit Union (l-r): Malcolm Thomas, Joe Newberry, Bishop Teresa Jeffersonpurchased the Davis Circle property. Hearing about Snorton, Presiding Elder Janice Lewis, and Pastor Gregory Scott. the church's rich history, Joe Newberry, President and CEO of Redstone Federal Credit Union, promised that the Credit Union would underwrite the cost of installing a historic marker at the site. "For over 150 years, members (of Phillips) have been sharing the gospel, serving the community and the world through its missions' work," said Newberry.

At the dedication ceremony, the Rev. Dr. Gregory Scott, Pastor of Phillips, did the invocation and the Chancel Choir sang. Deane Dalton of the Huntsville/Madison County Historical Society presented the marker to the church and the community. Malcolm Thomas accepted it and expressed appreciation to everyone who assisted in acquiring and installing it. In her presentation titled, "Historical Milestones," Dr. Mattie Thomas noted that Phillips was a member of the Memphis Colored Conference, the first Annual Conference of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. "Our congregation has consistently provided able leaders at the local and connectional levels of the Church," she said. Bishop Teresa Jefferson-Snorton greeted the audience and thanked the community for recognizing the work of Phillips. Presiding Elder Janice Lewis of the Huntsville District was in attendance. Senior Bishop Lawrence L. Reddick Ill sent greetings. The occasion ended with a reception where engraved journals were distributed as souvenirs.

Pastor Scott said the importance of the occasion cannot be overestimated. "A church organized by recently enslaved Africans amid the aftermath of the American Civil War and Reconstruction has remained steadfast for 156 years. The heritage and legacy of Phillips CME Church speak to generations yet to be born about how people limited educationally, economically, and socially were able to overcome and endure by believing in the faithfulness and trustworthiness of God," he exclaimed. Then he added, "This church is poised for the future as it imagines new possibilities."

Youth Sunday With A Twist 2021 Submitted by Mrs. Carolyn Perry

“Oh, my Goodness! This was so fun!” one child said.

It's safe to say churches around the globe are constantly having to evaluate how to engage the youth in their community. The Church has to find ways to make attending church and learning about the Lord exciting.

“Children are a gift from God: they are a real blessing.” Psalm 127:3.

The second Sunday of each month is dedicated as Youth Sunday at Trinity CME Church in Toccoa, Georgia, where the Rev. Montavious D. Brinson is the pastor. On this Sunday, the children and youth are in charge of the service. In September the “traditional” Youth Sunday took on a new look. It started with breakfast, which is served to the children each Sunday. As breakfast ended, the festivities began.

With the permission and support of Pastor Brinson and the Sunday church school superintendent, Sister Hazel Jones, Sunday church school was changed to “Funday” school.

The challenge for the team was how to make it fun but spiritually educational for the younger generations.

The team came up with the idea to use games as a way to captivate their interest and attention — from Bible memory to Bible trivia. We were blessed on that Sunday to have nearly 20 children present.

The day was just getting started.

After Funday school, everyone made their way to the main sanctuary where the children and youth were in charge. The Good News Choir, which is the children’s choir, was in charge of the music. On this Sunday, nearly two dozen children filled the choir stand proudly singing and praising God. This was done under the direction of the choir director, Sister Ashawna Green, and the director of music, Brother Gary Mayfield. The sanctuary was filled with such spirit-filled songs as God Made Me, Intentional, and God Is an Awesome God. The church was moved by seeing children connecting in deep worship and praise.

We at Trinity are so very proud of all of our children and wanted to start the school year off on a positive note. During the pandemic, many kids have faced hardships and have been thrown out of their norm. We wanted to make sure they started this year the right way.

Each child was asked to provide a brief biographical sketch with their age, grade, school, activities, etc.

During the morning service, Sister Carolyn Perry, BOCEF Director; Sister Karen Oglesby, Children’s Director; and Sister Paige Perry, Youth/CYF Director, introduced each child by reading his or her bio.

Submissions All of this was great, however, the best was yet to come.

In the past, the children were provided back-to-school backpacks and or school supplies. This year the backto-school experience was provided — but with a twist. Instead of the normal focus being placed on school supplies, each child from Pre-K to 12th grade was presented a back-to-school snack basket by the Pastor. This was Trinity’s way of acknowledging their children while also providing assistance to their parents/guardians.

“We want to do this every month!” another child proclaimed.

The gifts were great, the songs were beautiful, but the real goal was to continue to excite the children about God. As we concluded the day, several of the children in the church asked if they could continue to be involved in the church and have more events. As churches continue to educate and support the youngest members of the church, this was a reminder that we are also training and encouraging the next generation who will carry on the traditions and values.

A Tribute to Mrs. Betty Bedgood Submitted by Mrs. Beverly F. Ball St. Paul CME Church, Rev. Jim Allen, Pastor

On September 12, 2021, St. Paul CME Church, Grantville, Georgia, honored Mrs. Betty Bedgood for her countless hours of labor done in love for the music ministry and her faithful dedicated service to God.

Mrs. Bedgood participated in various musical endeavors while attending the famous A.H. Parker High School in Birmingham and at Miles College in Fairfield, Alabama. Upon graduation from Miles, she and her husband, Cleveland, accepted teaching positions in Meriwether County in Georgia. She began playing piano for chapel programs at Luthersville Elementary School. Mrs. Bedgood was recruited to play the piano for St. Paul’s choir in 1970 and shortly thereafter she and her family joined St. Paul CME Church. Mr. Curtis Griggs would play on first Sunday and she would play on second Sunday. She served as pianist for St. Paul CME Church for over 40 years (1970 – 2010).

Mrs. Bedgood served as musician under the following pastors: Rev. James F. Booker, Rev. Clarence Ellison, Rev. Peris J. Lester, Rev. Thurmond Brown, Rev. Leon Williams, Rev. Cleavon Meabon III, and Rev. Billy Holloway. She also served as musician at New Mount Bethel Baptist Church in Luthersville and at White Plains United Methodist Church in the St. Marks community. In addition to playing for churches, she served as official musician for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Theta Xi Omega Chapter in LaGrange, Georgia.

Mrs. Bedgood was a member of the 6th Episcopal District Choir under the direction of Mrs. Beulah McNair and Dr. Alfreda Lakey, and she represented St. Paul CME Church as a delegate to Annual Conferences for many years.

Mrs. Bedgood was showered with accolades from church members, the community, students, family, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Theta Xi Omega Chapter in LaGrange, Georgia, and friends.

Mrs. Bedgood, you are a gift from God, a blessing to our church, congregation, and community. We love you!

Darrick Brown Junior (DJ) “2021” “All In” with Music and the Arts Submitted by Rev. Dr. Willie Wiley Presiding Elder Augusta-Sparta District Sixth Episcopal District

DJ as he is called by family, neighbors, and friends is a 2021 graduate of Thomson High School who has been “all in” with music drama and the arts since he was very young. DJ states that his interest in music began when he was about seven years old at Vanderhorst CME Church, where he often “played” on the piano while waiting on his mother and grandmother to complete Church business. He also started playing with the drums and gradually started playing keyboards and drums with the choirs of Vanderhorst and Stone Chapel CME Churches.

Besides frequent participation in church activities, DJ’s musical gifts connected him with the performing arts in school and the community. His mentors and teachers discovered that he had an instinct for acting and he was soon absorbed in drama as well. DJ’s involvement in music and drama combined with singing, which started in church, led to his assuming different roles in theater in the community. The 38

Submissions multitalented young man wasted no time seizing opportunities to participate in activities that he grew to love and appreciate.

Darrick’s passion for and commitment to music and theater enhanced opportunities to perform in various activities throughout the area. He distinguished himself as a musician by organizing and directing a group of musicians that annually performed in church and civic engagements. As a member of the Augusta (Georgia) Junior Players, Darrick played the role of Dr. Martin Luther King Junior in a widely acclaimed play (“King”) that was shown in the Central Savannah River Area. As a student, DJ was also in the Governor’s Honor’s program and won first place in Georgia’s state-level Male Vocal Competition in 2021. He was voted Mr. Thomson High and Mr. Chorus as a result of his involvement and participation in the Chorus, Band, and Drama. As a Senior in High School, he actively participated in encouraging others to register and vote when he was not of legal age.

Despite his many accomplishments, Darrick remains humble, obedient, and faithful to his family and the community. DJ’s family, Vanderhorst CME Church and the Thomson, Georgia community are praying, and cheering for him as he negotiates his first year as a Freshman at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee. To God be the glory!

Myja, formerly Miss Black Virginia, holds a Bachelor of Science in Journalism & Mass Communication from North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University and a Master of Professional Studies in Public Relations and Corporate Communications from Georgetown University. Myja is employed as a Corporate Communications Manager at Zoom and is the host creator of Ask Mvi The Podcast.
