Reflection on the CYYAC 2024 Communion Service

Our 2024 Connectional Youth and Young Adult Conference was held July 1-5 in Greensboro, North Carolina. While there were notable events throughout the conference, I want to highlight just one of them in this editorial: the opening night communion service.

The setting in the ballroom that was to be our main gathering and worship space for the week was much different than what most of us see on Sunday mornings or even at almost all, if not all, of our previous Connectional gatherings. The room was dimly lit, with an abundance of dark blue light. Fog smoke was pouring across the stage and into the audience space, giving a feel more akin to what I might call a secular R&B or rock concert, and there was a multiplicity of musical instruments. (See picture on page 15.) The musicians played with great skill, in sync with one another as if they had been working together for years. As the 200-plus member choir of all ages sang, one could tell they were enthusiastic about what they were singing, although the lyrics were often drowned by the music. It was a delightful sight and experience.

The congregants were often urged to worship through standing and clapping. We participated in a communion ritual whose language was modified and modernized. Even the sermon given by Rev. Dr. Ericka Dunbar-Hill was inclined to the atmosphere. Often she used expressions that could be compared to her speaking in tongues without an interpreter. Not everyone understood what she was saying. But through all of these things the Holy Spirit was clearly speaking throughout the evening as evidenced by the response to the invitation. More than fifty people came forward and did what can only be described as seeking God's presence, salvation, and communion with them, and at least 3 answered yes to a call to preach.

However, it was a service in which many older adults (compared to the age range for young adults) were Rev. Dr. Ore L. Spragin, Jr., the outsiders. How could we Editor (I am including myself here) worship? We could worship in this manner: by not having it our way but by participating as directed, releasing ourselves to worship, giving thanks to God for the "strange food" (manna) on the table, resisting the temptation to withdraw from worship or the presence of God doing something in the unfamiliar. We could, in the presence of God, "allow" God to do what God was doing. We could receive that worship that had been planned and was conducted by the young adults (as I understand it). We could pray for understanding and wait on God, and we could pray for those who could and did understand the message to receive and respond to it.

We could pray for patience and eye-opening insight, just as Dr. Dunbar expounded in the sermon, and we can continue in worship by encouraging the young adults to continue in the good work they have begun, not for us individually, but for the Lord of the church who has begun a good work in them and will see it to completion.

This may not be the kind of church (service) I grew up with, but this, too, is my church. It is THE church, and we all can still participate ... adults offering opportunities and guiding the youth and young adults into commitment and service, and youth and young adults offering and giving themselves in commitment and service to Jesus within this body of the church. This may be a different expression of the church, but OHHHH! WHAT A GLORIOUS CHURCH IT IS!! Thank you, Lord, for visions and dreams! COME, let us worship the Lord together in the beauty of holiness!

OFFICIAL NOTICE: General Connectional Board 2024 Pursuant to ¶1000.6, §2, of The Book of Discipline, Revised 2022, the 2024 General Connectional Board, previously scheduled for Dallas, Texas, during the week of the Unity Summit, will meet Monday and Tuesday, September 2-3, 2024, beginning at 10:00 A.M. Central Daylight Time at the same site as the Unity Summit – Sheraton Dallas Hotel, 400 Olive Street, Dallas, Texas 75201.

General Connectional Board members are requested to reserve the dates of September 2nd-3rd for the General Connectional Board meeting, and to expect a call for the Standing Committees and other committee meetings from the respective Chairs of each Standing Committee or the Senior Bishop for other committees.

While we anticipate a full day (morning, afternoon, evening) schedule for the first day, we anticipate a morning to early afternoon (about 3:00 - 4:00 adjournment) for the morning and afternoon of the second day, but we will adjourn after all business is completed.

BE BOLD: Face Now-Embrace Next-See New The Scripture (Acts 26:18) to open their eyes that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a share among those who are sanctified by faith in me.

THE PRACTICE Wow, what a powerful time we had in Greensboro, North Carolina! The CYYAC 2024 conference was epic.

Now, how do we embrace Next? The Next generation of leaders and generational leaders are bold in thought and action, facing now, and seeing the new possibilities in God’s Church. I would encourage the Church to challenge ourselves with Next. Many of the Annual Conferences have now also been completed. So, what’s Next? Not the Next meeting but the Next ministry. What new ministries can our local church embrace? What target audience does the local church plan to evangelize? When do we practice daily personal and corporate mission projects? The answer to these questions is found in the commitment to embrace what God is doing in the life of the local Church. So, do we really want to be where God is? I am not lifting a Theological thought but a Practical Practice. Just as God moved during the CYYAC conference and many of the Annual Conferences, God can move in the local Church if we embrace God’s move.

THE CHALLENGE Challenging ourselves with Next, the Church can no longer wait in line to be called to evangelism and missions work, education, politics, civic engagement, food banks, and more. Recreating the Wheel is not necessary. The local churches can partner within their district or region. They can engage other partnerships with organizations within their local communities. Ministry is possible with a vision and a leader or team who understands that their vision can create spaces for relevant ministry. They understand that helping the local church embrace Next looks visionary. God creates the vision for the leader. The leader must present the vision to the people, who are in our case, the local church officers, and members. The members must take the vision and implement it as the benefactors or those persons, groups, or communities who will receive the results.

However, not all leaders understand the vision. Therefore, even this challenge seems foreign. The local Church must embrace Next by becoming the place of transformation with vision as the vehicle that can be used to make it happen.

THE PRAYER Gracious God give our leaders a vision for your work. Help us to embrace Next so that business as usual is not our place of comfort and convenience. Help us to speak life into the vision as a part of our daily practice and speech. In Jesus' name. Amen!

How Congregations Can Support Grieving Members Dr. Bernice King-Strong The last few years have been fraught with deaths, tragedies, and natural disasters like we have not seen before.

Many lives have been lost to disease, gun violence, and food insufficiency, lack of adequate medical services, and clean water necessary to sustain life and to maintain the physical body. Although these occurrences have existed and continue to occur on a large scale, at one time or another each of us will mourn the loss of a loved one. How we manage our loss and continue to thrive is predicated on the support we receive from many sources. One resource that is poised to be an incredible resource and outreach mechanism to members who are grieving are church congregants themselves. Congregations have long been blessed with people that know how to be of service to others in need. They are gifted with the ability to know what, when and how to do what is needed. These congregants possess the gifts of empathy, compassion and service that are gifts from God. All of us are familiar with how the scenario plays out when a member of the congregation suffers a loss.

During the initial stages of the loss, it is customary for congregants to provide services in the area of food to the grieving member and their families. Additionally, calls are made, sympathy cards and telegrams are sent. As the days and weeks pass all of the initial support wanes and the grieving individual is left to bear much of their agony alone. Often times the congregants do not know whether to talk about the deceased for fear of making the bereaved sadder or prolonging their grief. It is important to realize that not mentioning the death of the loved one does not erase the thought from the bereaved mind. Sometimes the discomfort felt by individuals trying to support the bereaved may result from our own feelings that maybe we have the need to get on with life and want them to feel better. We do what we think is best for them. Although well meaning, we may exacerbate a feeling of loneliness for those that have suffered loss by ignoring the elephant in the room –their dead loved one.

Realizing that the first year after the death initiates many first for those who have lost a loved one. These occurrences are the death anniversary date, birthday of the deceased and holidays that were celebrated. While as a congregation we have moved on and may expect the mourner to have done the same, this is generally not the case. It is essential for our church ministries to understand this. Implementing annual programs to remember lost members is a first step in helping grieving members know that they are not alone. What can we do as congregants to help those who are mourning a loss is vital to their sustained growth through their grieving.

There are some ways that we may initially help and foster a continuum of services that are sustainable over the next months and year for the grieving individual. We can: • Offer to help with planning with services of remembrance.

• Visit the bereaved with their permission • Run errands for them • Invite them to join outings such as walks and visits to attractions, such as parks, museums or similar activities that promote exercise and connections to the outside world.

• Be vigilant and watch for signs of complicated grief setting in. We can accomplish this by not being overbearing but check in with the bereaved on a scheduled basis, particularly if they are missing services for an extended period of time.

• Acknowledge to the bereaved that experiencing pain and sadness at the loss is not a sign of weakness or lack of faith.

• If there are persons in the congregation that are qualified and interested in starting a grief support group, do so.

• Provide written resources to the bereaved. If they are interested in speaking to a mental health professional, help them make calls, and provide transportation if it is needed.

If one congregant is closer to the bereaved than others and has been in regular contact with that person or persons, they may have insight concerning ways that others can be helpful to support the mourner. Invite other interested parties to partner with you and start a group that answers the call to serve other members in this way.

The more we bless one another, the more we will also be blessed. Because the length and depth of mourning is unique to each individual, providing a variety of support and resources can help a friend or family member get through a very difficult time.

Greetings, My Brothers and Sisters in Christ: The Department of Lay Ministries is dedicated to expanding our Christian fellowship to Christian and nonChristian women. Our next initiative to achieve this goal is in hosting a Community Baby Shower event, which will provide a significant opportunity to strengthen our Christian fellowship.

Community Baby Showers are a beautiful way to welcome expecting parents of all ages and their loved ones into a nurturing Christian environment.

I encourage the LayWomen of every local church to come together and organize a Community Baby Shower during July or August for expecting and new moms and dads from your local church and from your community.

Let's focus our discussions on topics important for spiritual growth, personal development, and the role of a new parent.

Remember, the event can be simple - just a place to gather, share a light meal, engage in dialogue, and provide much-needed baby items to assist new moms.

Dr. Donald W. Comer

Lane College Board of Trustees Select Dr. Donald W. Comer, PhD, As Interim President JACKSON, TN—The Lane College Board of Trustees (Jackson, TN) has selected Dr. Donald W. Comer as Interim President, effective August 1, 2024. His appointment follows the departure of current President Dr. Logan Hampton, effective July 31, 2024.

“The Board and I are confident that we have selected a dynamic new leader for the next level of growth of our beloved Lane College,” Bishop Marvin Frank Thomas, chair of the Lane College Board of Trustees said.

Located in Jackson, TN, Lane College is a private Historically Black College established by the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church (CME) in 1882.

Dr. Comer’s appointment continues the historic HBCU’s legacy of excellence. He is a Jackson, TN native, earning his PhD in Urban Higher Education at another HBCU, Jackson State University (JSU) in Jackson, MS. He also holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA), and a Bachelor of Science in Accounting (BS). After 35 years at FedEx, Dr. Comer retired as Vice President, Decision Science & Analytics and Operations Analysis; where his duties included collaborating with Tesla, Inc.’s research team to match the design of Tesla Electric Semi Truck with FedEx’s operational needs.

Named to the Lane College Hall of Distinction-Non Alumni in 2022, Dr. Comer says of the new appointment, “I am deeply honored to be appointed to lead my hometown HBCU. Lane College plays a pivotal role in delivering on the promise of excellence in Black higher education. I’m excited to have this opportunity to foster thriving academic pursuit, enhance student success and nurture the next generation of scholars and global leaders.”

He has been a tireless advocate, advisor, and mentor for students, dedicating significant personal time to serving on the boards of HBCUs Lemoyne-Owen College in Memphis, TN, and Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, AL. He is a Silver Life member of the NAACP, a member of the National Black MBA Association, and a Life member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. ### 12

Miles College Expands Academic Offerings to Drive Our Future Workforce Miles College is thrilled to announce several new initiatives designed to enhance the educational experience, prepare students for graduate studies, and supercharge the next workforce. The introduction of these new degree programs, modernized curricula, and innovative course offerings lean into legacy and set the course for future leaders.

As we look forward to the 2024-2025 academic year, Miles College is excited to embark on this new chapter of growth and innovation. "As President, I, the Provost, the Miles College Board of Trustees, along with the collegeʼs faculty and staff, remain dedicated to continuing our legacy of excellence and providing our students with the tools and opportunities they need to succeed," stated President Bobbie Knight. To this end, the college has a new program and two minor offerings for Fall 2024 and Masters Programs in two disciplines in the Pipeline for the near future.

Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies - Miles College is expanding its undergraduate offerings with a new major in Interdisciplinary Studies. The Interdisciplinary Studies major integrates multiple disciplines to provide a comprehensive, interconnected learning experience, fostering a broad understanding and versatile skill set for our students. This will be implemented Fall Semester 2024.

Minors – Minors in Sports Management and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Both will be implemented Fall Semester 2024.

1. The Sports Management Minor - offers an interdisciplinary education in the business, operational, and administrative aspects of the sports industry. This program is particularly beneficial for scholar-athletes who wish to continue their careers in the sports field, even if they do not advance to professional league play. The option to pursue a minor in Sports Management and immediately apply for a Master's degree in the same field is a significant recruitment and retention tool for the college.

2. The Artificial Intelligence (AI) Minor – Through this minor, students will gain an understanding of what generative AI is and how it works. It will equip students with the knowledge and confidence they need to assist in transforming organizations into innovative, efficient, and sustainable companies of the future.

Graduate Programs (Masters) in the Pipeline - For the first time in the history of Miles College, in the near future, we will be offering a Master's degree in two disciplines: 1. Master of Science in Management (MSM) with a concentration in Sports Management. The Masterʼs degree in Management will prepare scholars for managerial roles in the sports industry. This program combines a core management curriculum with specialized sports-related coursework, equipping students with the skills needed for leadership positions in this dynamic field.

The Center's primary mission is to foster a thriving innovation economy for HBCUs and HBCCs, particularly in the Birmingham area and the state of Alabama. It will achieve this by supporting diverse and underrepresented creators, [disrupters], and innovators and connecting researchers to founders to foster successful entrepreneurs, businesses, and communities.

Led by Erskine "Chuck" Faush, newly appointed Miles College Chief Innovation and Growth Officer and the Center's Founder In Residence, the Center will build upon existing efforts to support Alabama's HBCU ecosystem and utilize Centers of Excellence to attract entrepreneurial talent and venture investment, thereby expanding the city and region's innovation capacity. Housed at Miles College, 2150 will serve as a collaborator, incubator, and accelerator. “We are launching a collaborative that will improve economic outcomes by connecting and synergizing a unified community to attract and retain talent, champion workforce development, support researchers and founders, and drive economic empowerment”, said Faush.

2150 is partnering with various stakeholders in the public, private, and education sectors to solve problems and align talent and research with market-driven product demand, particularly within the HBCU ecosystem.

Southern Research CEO Josh Carpenter said, “The strength of our public-private partnerships, especially working with Miles, will expand our reach and maximize our economic impact for the state as a whole.”

The 2150 Center for Innovation, Commercialization & Growth will assess and validate high-potential ideas, creating value for companies, generating revenue for the institution, and providing additional research support. Through shared resources, services, and collaboration, the aim is to foster the growth of people, products, and places within the local and state economy and the HBCU ecosystem. ### About the College: Founded in 1898 Miles College is located in Fairfield, Alabama. Paine College Awarded Over $2.2 Million from National Park Service for Restoration and Preservation of Historic Structures on Campus FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 10, 2024 Media Contact: Helene Carter Hcarter@paine.edu – (803) 664.0080 Paine College, Augusta, GA – Paine.edu Paine College is pleased to announce that the National Park Service awarded $2,249,039.00 that will be utilized to restore and preserve three historical structures on campus. The National Park Service (NPS) awarded a total of $10,670,000 to 15 projects in eight states as part of the Historic Preservation Fund's HBCU grant program.

The grants awarded to Paine College will be used to address structural repairs and damage as a result of excessive moisture in Epworth Residential Hall ($750,000) that was built in 1925. Belle-Bennett Residential Hall ($749,039), built in 1962, will receive extensive restoration and conservation of interior elements. Funding will underwrite the restoration of Peters Campus Center ($750,000) that houses the cafeteria, offices, student lounge and recreation areas. Also, the grant award will address ADA accommodations and accessibility for students, staff, and visitors located in all three buildings.

"I greatly appreciate the efforts of Senators Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock that led to the appropriation of this critical funding," said Attorney Michael Thurmond, Chairman of the Board of Trustees. The entire Paine College family and our loyal supporters are celebrating this unprecedented achievement."

This gives us the opportunity to work towards upgrading facilities to create improved spaces for students' living and learning environments. In December 2012, the U.S. Department of Interior listed Paine College in the National Register of Historic Places and designated thirty-seven acres as a Historic District. Many of the College's buildings and structures are well over fifty years of age and are deemed historic. This designation qualifies Paine for HBCU Preservation funding.

President Jones has been a transformative leader, guiding Paine College through a period of growth and innovation, and leaving an indelible mark on the institution.

Under President Jones's leadership, Paine College has experienced significant achievements and milestones, including institutional accreditation by the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools (TRACS), approval to offer distance education by TRACS, approval for participation in Division I South of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA), partnering with the Augusta National Golf Club which established two endowed scholarships in the name of Lee Elder and a women's golf team for the first time in the College's history, a grant in the amount of $1.4 million from Augusta-Richmond County Commission to mitigate the effects of COVID-19, and accreditation of the Department of Business Administration by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP).

Most recently she catalyzed a first-of-its kind 10-year Transformation Plan with the Board of Trustees and the support of Augusta National Golf Club, EAB, Bank of America, and the Community Foundation for the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA). Her unwavering commitment to academic excellence, student success, and community engagement has strengthened Paine College's position as a beacon of higher education in the CSRA. Reflecting on her time at Paine College, President Jones expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve as president and highlighted the dedication and resilience of the Paine College community. "It has indeed been my pleasure and honor to serve at Paine College for the past 31 years, first as a faculty member, then in various administrative roles including Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, and for the past five years, as President. "God Bless America" A Blessing or a Curse for African Americans?

As I sit down to write this article, I am reminded of the complex and often fraught relationship between African Americans and the phrase "God Bless America." On the surface, it may seem like a simple expression of patriotism and gratitude.

However, for many African Americans, it is a phrase that evokes a mix of emotions - from pride and loyalty to frustration and disillusionment.

As an African American, I have always felt a sense of irony when hearing this phrase. On one hand, I am grateful for the freedom and opportunities that America has afforded me. My ancestors fought hard for their freedom, and I am proud to be a part of this country's rich tapestry. However, I am also aware of the long and painful history of slavery, segregation, and systemic racism that has plagued our nation from its inception.

Growing up in America as an African American, I was constantly bombarded with messages that emphasized my "American-ness." I was taught to be proud of my country, to salute the flag, and to recite the Pledge of Allegiance with fervor.

But what about the long history of oppression and marginalization that has been perpetrated against my people? What about the fact that my ancestors were stolen from their homelands, forced into slavery, and subjected to centuries of violence, exploitation, and discrimination?

Furthermore, the phrase "God Bless America" often implies that America is a perfect or morally upright nation. But what about the many injustices and inequalities that still plague our society? What about police brutality, mass incarceration, voter suppression, and economic inequality? Can we truly say that God blesses a nation that continues to perpetuate these injustices?

As an African American, I believe that we need a more nuanced understanding of our country's history and its ongoing impact on our community.

We need to acknowledge the pain and suffering inflicted upon us and work towards creating a more just and equitable society.

So what does it mean to say "God bless America" from an African American perspective? For me, it means acknowledging the complex history of our nation - both its triumphs and its failures. It means recognizing the struggles and sacrifices made by our ancestors who fought for freedom and equality. It means working towards creating a more just society where all people have access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities.

Ultimately, whether or not we say "God bless America" is not as important as what we do to create positive change in our communities. As African Americans, we must continue to fight for justice, equality, and human rights. We must continue to uplift each other and support each other in our struggles. And we must continue to work towards creating a world where every person can thrive regardless of their race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status.

For many African Americans, the phrase "God Bless America" rings hollow. It seems like a shallow expression of patriotism that ignores the So let us not just say "God bless America" - let us very real struggles and challenges faced by our work towards making America a better place for community. It is like saying "God bless" to a family all people.

“Furthering” Diversity 2024 Winner Iris Reddick Manburg is a PhD student in the area of theology at the University of Chicago Divinity School.

Prior to arriving at the University of Chicago, she earned a Master of Divinity, Magna Cum Laude, and a Master of Theology, Summa Cum Laude, from Southern Methodist University. She’s a musician and constructive theologian interested in womanist theology and ethics, theomusicology, sonic praxis and aesthetics. Her research prioritizes womanist trends of self-authorship and spiritualized politics at the metaphysical intersection of sound, space and consciousness. Beginning in 2022, Iris worked with a small team of co-organizers to develop the programming for an inaugural Black History Month Speaker series at the Divinity School. Now an annual occurrence, the series features renowned black scholars of religion from across the country whose research engages black liberation, religion, and culture.

A group of Christian Methodist Episcopal congregations, in the Seventh Episcopal District, Carolina Region, Charleston/ Columbia District, were able to have a long-awaited Community Vacation Bible School in Batesburg-Leesville, SC. The congregations of Saint James, Rev. Leroy Davis, Pastor; Saint John, Rev. Dr. Beverlyann V. Austin, Pastor; Saint Matthew, Rev. Thomasena A. Rice, Pastor; and Wesley Chapel, Rev. Dr. Doris L. Hicks, Pastor; and the Directors of their Boards of Christian Education and Formation helped make this special event a success. Individuals from the community and other churches in the area participated also. Vacation Bible School 2024 was held at Saint Matthew CME Church in Leesville, South Carolina, Rev. Thomasena A. Rice, Pastor, and Rev. Jetson R. Maness, Presiding Elder.

The duration for VBS 2024 was Monday, June 17th through Thursday, June 20th, 2024. The Theme, "Breaker Rock Beach," was discussed in six classes ranging from age 3 and above. The Motto, God's Truth Never Changes, was demonstrated through the chosen Scriptures each day. The daily average attendance was seventy-five including: twelve teachers; two per class. Everyone was fed spiritually and physically each evening.

The classes were assigned a specific day for their scholars to share their enthusiasm and knowledge learned during the allotted class time. The children learned through crafts, activities, and music as directed by their teachers. Vacation Bible School was not for children only; the adults also had fellowship through deep conversations that were exciting and engaging.

The success of this Vacation Bible School started conversation to begin planning for 2025, working together as ONE in the community of Batesburg-Leesville, SC and demonstrating to our community that God's Truth Never Changes. This was a valuable assembly for 2024 and all are looking forward to what God has for our community in the future.

The Theme: "Chat and Chew: Embracing Your Uniqueness." Ladies and youth from multiple churches/Denominations from Little Rock, North Little Rock, Sherwood, and Pine Bluff, Arkansas, came together to learn and share.

Rev. Fannie Washington led the second session with "Accepting and Embracing Your Uniqueness" - Psalms 139:14. We are to help people understand that they are SOMEBODY. Prayer bought us through and will do the same for them. Satan is still using his tactics to draw us away from God. We get into trouble by lacking understanding of what's in God's Word. Don't let the enemy convince you to condemn yourself. We allow our children to use our phones, access the internet, allow them to watch television shows, and not closely monitor what they are doing or who they are hanging out with. We need to amplify their voices to feel valued. We need to take a good look at Self.

Celebrate your strengths.

Learn to be content with who you are not. Look into your Heart, Mind, Soul.

According to God's will in our life, history makes us unique. Nothing can happen unless God allows it. He will strengthen you - According Ladies who were in attendance at the women's Chat and Chew, Pleasant Grove CME Church, to His will. (Jeremiah 29: 11) Cato, Arkansas.

Rev. Vickie Williams, Pastor at Moore's Chapel - Wynne, Arkansas, opened the workshop with Devotion and Meditation.

Session 3 brought us Sis. Johnnie Bridges, with "Moving Out, Stepping Up and Walking In." If you allow Him, He will shape your whole life/world.

Uniqueness can be negative or positive but when you're following God, it's positive. Embrace your uniqueness, accept it. If you're saved, He does not give us a spirit of fear. Step out with Boldness, embrace your skills, accept criticism as a unique person - but keep in mind that not everyone will like your uniqueness. Teach your children to be good,

A Day of Exceptional Achievement Submitted by Rev. Dr. Charles E. Henderson Pastor Retired, 6th Episcopal District

As a retired Navy Chief, I wanted my grandson, Dwight, to think of the Navy as a path to success when he was 4 years old! My desire led to the purchase of a model aircraft carrier which had most of the aircraft the USS Kitty Hawk had on board during my first combat cruise in the South China Sea. Our squadron participated in the Vietnam War between 19651968. We had three 10-month tours of sea operations within three years. The Lord kept me safe from harm!

As a small child, Dwight would visit us and immediately run into the bedroom to take out his model carrier. I would describe the mission of each type of aircraft that our carrier used during the deployments. I was impressed with his level of interest and understanding of attack aircraft battle procedures. He was so interested that he could remember the names and mission of each type of aircraft on the model carrier. I prayed often to the Lord for my grandson to become the one who followed in my footsteps. I fully believe in praying to the Lord in deep faith!

During his attendance in public education classes from elementary through high school, Dwight was identified as a student who would immediately help any other student who had issues with concepts or tasks in class. His final GPA was in the upper 5% of his 2020 graduation class. Our daughter and her husband raised him to be humble and they taught him, at an early age that the Lord is very essential in his life. Guiding young children to believe in the Lord is critical today!

His love of the Lord was the foundation which enabled him to propel through the rigorous application process which included personal interviews, scholastic letters, and recommendations from the State of Georgia's Congressmen and Senators. Upon completion of all the requirements Dwight was selected as one of the 6% of the 25,000 applicants in the Spring of 2020! I went immediately to the Lord in prayers of thanksgiving, honor, and praise because he was admitted to the path of his choice.

My daily focus includes prayer for my daughter and her three children. I believe when we love the Lord and rely on His guidance, success is possible! Dwight joined the Officer's Christian Fellowship which provides spiritual guidance and support for naval officers all over the world.

During the four years from June 2020 until May 2024, he had many challenges, but the Lord provided him with Christian families and friends who were living in Maryland. Dwight prayed for the Lord's strength to enable him to complete all of the requirements to receive his B.S. Degree in Computer Engineering.

On May 24, 2024, at about 10:45 a.m., my dream became a reality when I was able to be present and snap on Dwight's officer bars as an Ensign in the United States Navy. Then my heart was full of joy as I proceeded to give him the first salute as an officer. Our Lord is such a great, loving, forgiving, and supporting Lord who will never disappoint those who are trusting and abiding in His Word!

I pray that other young Christians who read this article will think about the Lord's power that is available for their support!

You must pray for guidance and allow the Holy Spirit to assist in your selection of a career path. When the career path is revealed, the Lord will propel any true believer along the way! My personal life has been so blessed by the love of God, which enabled me to serve 20 years in the U.S. Navy, have a career in public education, and a career as a pastor in our Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. Now I pray that the Lord will continue blessing my grandson in his career.

Also, I pray that other believers will try the Lord and see what a great God we serve! As born again Christians, we must always remember that when the Lord is on our side, all things are possible for those who are faithful. The enemy cannot prevent us from attaining achievements that the Lord has placed before us! Amen.

OAK GROVE HONORS 2024 HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE MICHAEL D. CHALMERS Submitted by Windy Dunbar-Chalmers, First Lady Reverend Doctor Michael Chalmers Pastor Presiding Elder Urseila Williams, Aberdeen-Tupelo District

Michael D. Chalmers is a 2024 graduate of Shannon High School. In the fall he will attend Copiah-Lincoln Community College (Co-Lin) where he will major in political science, as well as be a member of the football team. He is the son of the Reverend Doctor Michael and Windy Chalmers.

While in high school, Michael was a member of the BETA Club, Student Council, Honor Roll, Principal Honor Roll, enrolled in dual credit classes, Captain of the Football Team, and graduated with a 3.54 GPA In 2023 Michael served as a page in the Mississippi State Capitol, attended BOYS STATE and MOST Camps. Michael was nominated to serve as a senior ambassador for the Lee County School District 2023 / 2024 school year.

Michael is a wonderful young man who exemplifies greatness in character and work ethic. He has been a member of the Monroe County 4-H club for over five years. He has been involved in various community and school activities. He volunteered for numerous community service projects including the Salvation Army Angel Tree Distribution Day, Mississippi Minority Farmers Alliance (MMFA) Food Hub, and Farmers Market. Michael has received various awards from 2nd place in the 2022 4-H State Public Speaking Contest to 2024 SHS Prom King, and he continues to shine brightly among his peers. Michael has worked at Texas Roadhouse since January 2023.

Over the years Michael has attended several CME churches where he served as an usher, a member of the choir, and member of the praise team. He is currently a member of the Oak Grove CME Church (Rienzi, Mississippi).

Joining the Great Cloud

After the birth of her two youngest children, her focus was on home. In the late 1970s, she briefly returned to the social work field as coordinator of Meals on Wheels for the greater Los Angeles area, facilitating home-delivered meal service for lowincome elderly persons. Rev. Graves’s election as the 42nd Bishop of the CME Church prompted yet another family move, this time to Memphis, Tennessee, where Alfretta served a short stint as a social counselor for the Department of Human Services before returning to Indianapolis upon the dissolution of her marriage.

In Indianapolis, Alfretta held various positions in the social services sector. To promote adoption of children needing and deserving a permanent home, she made several television appearances on local public affairs talk shows. For her commitment to advocacy, Alfretta was awarded “Outstanding Caseworker of the Year” by One Church One Child in partnership with the Department of Child Welfare. Before her retirement, she worked at the Peace Learning Center as a facilitator teaching conflict resolution and the philosophy of non-violence to elementary school children. For this work, the Indiana Commission on Community Service awarded her the “AmeriCorps Service Award.” She received additional accolades for her faithful service as a musician and stewardess at Emmanuel CME Church.

After the birth of her granddaughter, Alfretta made her final geographical move, returning to Memphis in 2007 to enjoy and help in the rearing of her youngest grandchildren. She joined Harris Memorial CME Church where she was an active member, stewardess, and previous stewardess board president.

In 2023, Bishop Marvin Frank Thomas, Sr., chair of the Lane College Board of Trustees, established the Women of Valor Scholarship in honor of Alfretta and other courageous women who have impacted his life and the greater community. Many who knew her noted her softspoken demeanor and her “sweet” and gentle spirit.

Alfretta Omega Graves departed this life on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, in Memphis, Tennessee.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Herbert Lee and Grace Burton. She loved her family and especially adored her children and grandchildren. Alfretta Graves is survived by her children: Jacqueline Graves Thomas, Ameera Victoria Graves, and William Henry Graves, II; brother, J. Morris Anderson; sister, Jacqui Burton-McCullough; grandchildren: Marvin Frank Thomas, Jr., William Henry Graves, III, Jadan Jordan Graves, and Ameera Katherine-Grace Graves; son-in-love, Bishop Marvin Frank Thomas, Sr.; daughter-in-love, Jada Jumper Graves; brother-in-love, J. Bernard McCullough; and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Announcing the 2024-2025 Connectional Clinical Pastoral Education (CCPE) Program

The Connectional Clinical Pastoral Education Program is an educational experience for ministers and laypersons of all denominations who want to enhance their professional pastoral skills and personal development but are unable to be in a traditional CPE program due to time or other restrictions. It also enables probationary ministers in the Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church to meet the requirement of one unit of CPE for full connection clergy membership. This unique program brings ministers from across the country together and in small groups for interactive, reflective learning using their own community and place of ministry as the context.

We will be offering two separate groups during the upcoming year.

FALL 2024

Wednesday-Thursday, January 15-16, 2024 PST Pastors Conference, Atlanta, GA Monthly meetings via Zoom – TWO TIMES PER MONTH ON FRIDAY EVENING Exact Dates TBD at Orientation Final Evaluations & Graduation – date and location TBD The student is responsible for all of his/her travel, lodging and food costs at the in-person educational sessions.

The focus of this CPE program is on ministry in the congregation. Participants must have an approved place of ministry in order to complete the required hours in ministry each month of the program. The recommendation of a presiding bishop or supervising pastor is required as well. In addition to the ministry hours, attendance at all sessions is required.

There will be written assignments, readings and some internet-based assignments. The program operates under the auspices of the Academy for Public Theology through the Office of the CME Endorser. The faculty is comprised of certified CPE Supervisors and certified professional chaplains.

TUITION is $550, which includes a $50 non-refundable application fee, a $150 deposit once accepted into the program, and a balance of $350 payable before the program begins. The tuition includes the required books. There is currently no scholarship program, however a payment plan can be arranged.
