LET GOD ARISE! In 1997, Glenn Burleigh released, Let God Arise: Opus 35: Cantata For Eastertime, For Chorus, Soli and Orchestra. This cantata was performed magnificently under the direction of Minister of Music Patricia Brassel while I was serving as pastor of the Lane Chapel CME Church in Shreveport, Louisiana. This musical production movingly tells the Easter story and seeks to awaken the spiritual senses of participants and attendees to their need to let God arise in their lives. Surely, if Jesus had not been raised back to life from the grave, the cross would have been of no effect as an instrument of our salvation. However, though the resurrection is critically imperative Rev. Dr. Ore L. Spragin, Jr., Editor to salvation, it is only one side of our salvation.

Another side of our salvation is the “let” side. Let is command: it levies a demand, a requirement – in this case, upon the hearer of the word of God. The gospel of Jesus Christ explicitly requires the resurrection of Christ in the life of an individual by means of that person’s belief/faith. Jesus has risen from the dead, but has he risen in your life?

Let is permission: it is a willful, active response to the gospel and to the Christ of the gospel. As Revelation 3:20 says, Jesus is knocking at the door of your heart. He is on the outside. You have to open the door and let him in. Each individual of their own free will and choice must give permission to save him or her.

Let is release: it frees Jesus to do what only Jesus can do. It is not allowed that the individual who is in need of the salvation that comes through the risen Christ will then determine how Christ will act to perform and perfect that salvation within them.

Finally, let is oughtness: it is what should be done even if and when it is not done. It is a strong recommendation for that which is correct, good, and/or true. Whether you receive the salvation and lifting power of the Christ or not is your decision, but you ought to receive him. For he is the only means of being lifted from the pit and depths of sin and death to abundant life both now and after death.

No one had to let Christ rise from the dead, but he does need you to let him rise in your heart. If you let him rise, he will raise you up. LET GOD ARISE!

Bishop Godwin Thompson Umoette, the 60th bishop of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church and the presiding bishop of the Tenth Episcopal District, recently succumbed to a sickness in his home country of Nigeria, transitioning from this earthly life on February 26, 2022. Funeral arrangements are pending as of today, March 22, 2022. A full obituary will be printed when it becomes available. Please continue to pray for his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Godwin Umoette, and his family, as well as the 10th Episcopal District and the entire CME Church.

On Monday, February 14, 2022, as part of President Biden’s Presidential Delegation to Attend the Bicentennial Celebration of the Arrival of the First Free Black Americans to the Republic of Liberia, NCC Governing Board Chair, Bishop Teresa Jefferson-Snorton of the Fifth Episcopal District of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, visited Monrovia.

The delegation was led by Ms. Dana Banks, Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Africa at the National Security Council, and also included U.S. Ambassador to Liberia Michael McCarthy and Mr. Lonnie Bunch, Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution.

The U.S. Embassy in Liberia has released the details of the delegation’s visit, noting that they attended the Government of Liberia’s Bicentennial Celebration at SKD Stadium, signed a bilateral agreement of approximately $55 million to improve the health of Liberians over the next five years, and met with the Elections Coordinating Committee to reiterate the United States’ commitment to free and fair elections.

The delegation was described as commemorating the longstanding partnership between the United States Government and the Government of Liberia by meeting with Liberian President Weah and Ministers of Health and Foreign Affairs as they marked the launch of a bilateral agreement.

The Presidential Delegation with the U.S. Marine Security Guards posted to U.S. Embassy Monrovia.

When the delegation met with the Elections Coordinating Committee Steering Committee, the US Embassy reports that the “leaders discussed the work they are doing to advocate for electoral reform, observe elections, and provide nonpartisan assessments on elections and electoral violence. They also shared their perspectives on the 2023 presidential election.” Also, it was reported that “the U.S. Government plans, through USAID funding, to support the ECC to independently observe the full electoral cycle in 2023 and to report their findings and recommendations to the people of Liberia.”

Bishop Jefferson-Snorton was also able to meet with Bishop Kortu Brown, President of the Liberia Council of Churches to discuss ways in which the two councils might work together in the future.

In reflection of her time in Liberia, Bishop Jefferson-Snorton affirmed the significance of this event: "The history of these two nations - the USA and Liberia - are intertwined. In this moment it is key for us to lift up this connection, but to also create sustainable pathways for partnerships that will enhance the lives of our Liberian sisters and brothers."

“From Where I Sit …”

A CME Hidden Jewel – Zion Christian Cemetery In 1873, the Sons of Zion (recently freed slaves) purchased fifteen acres to establish a common place where people of color, whose Churches did not have a cemetery, could be buried with dignity and respect. In 1876, what became known as Zion Christian Cemetery was opened to the black community. One hundred years later, in 1974 when the last burial had occurred, close to 40,000 souls had been interred into these sacred and hallowed grounds.

Local Memphis and Tennessee notable citizens who influenced the society of their day and whose descendants went on to reach national acclaim were also included. People like Reverend Morris Henderson (who led the Sons of Zion) founded the historic Beale Street Baptist Church in 1865. When Henderson died in 1877, the congregation had grown to 2,500. And Thomas Moss along with Calvin McDowell and William Stewart who was murdered due to jealousy because of the success of their “People’s Grocery”. Ida B. Wells was a close friend of Moss and Godmother to his daughter. The murder of Moss, McDowell, and Stewart inspired Wells to begin her international anti-lynching campaign.

Educated at Meharry Medical School in Nashville, Dr. Georgia Patton Washington was the first African American medical doctor in Tennessee. As a missionary to Liberia, she established a school in Monrovia. Thomas Frank Cassels was appointed attorneygeneral in 1878 and was the first African American lawyer admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of West Tennessee. The grandparents of Dr. Benjamin Hooks, Charles (a truant officer) and Julia Hooks (a music teacher and principal) are also buried in Zion.

Without a perpetual care fund, the cemetery often faced maintenance and upkeep challenges. In 1986, the last surviving owner, Mrs. Eva Christian, a member of Mt. Pisgah CME Church, donated the ownership of the cemetery to the CME Church for safekeeping.

The General Board of Personnel Services has worked to ensure that the property would not be “flipped” for residential development. The CME Church leased the cemetery to the Zion Community Project (a nonprofit) in 1993 for 25 years and renewed the lease in 2018.

Over the last 20 years, the Zion Community Project has worked with thousands of volunteers to clear and restore the Cemetery. The 22-member Board raises funds yearly to maintain the cemetery as a learning center through which volunteers are better able to bridge the racial divide and learn of the contributions of those interred. A written history of the cemetery will be published in August by the History Press of Arcadia Publishing.

The Project’s website, www.ZionCommunityProject.org, is available to those who know little about ZION and its story but wish to learn more. Meanwhile, in my opinion, Zion is truly “a hidden jewel” of the CME Church. Or at least that’s the way it looks to me…

Getting Back to Basics as “We Envision Our Way Forward Taking Care of God’s Business” A Connectional Church Do we boast that we are a connectional Church? If so, what is our boasting about?

What does that mean to our children and young people, to our young adults, and adults even senior adults? What is connectional? According to connectionalism, the church is defined not by formal structures or doctrine, or lines of authority. It is defined by connections between people such as connections between one bishop and another, bishops, and pastors, bishops, and laity, one pastor and another, pastor and laity, as well as laity and laity. To be connectional simply means the people are connected to each other’s hopes, dreams, failures, and disappointments and much more with the thread of love.

The Strength of Connection The strength of the connectional Church is the people who are joined together by Faith and Hope and Love realizing we are stronger together. When the Church connects through fellowship only, we miss the purpose of connection. When we connect in shallowness and not the depth of purpose, we lose sight of God and what God is calling us to do. The strength of connection must be trust. When we experience distrust in the Body of Christ or the Church, we do harm to the connection. Instead, trust God and do what is best for God’s Church.

The Greatest Connection The strongest connection in the Christian Church must be through the One from God, Jesus the Christ. Jesus declared I and My Father are one. Without giving a great theological insight to the text, we must be aware that connection and alignment with the dynamics of the Father and Son relationship remind the connectional Church to be one. Yes, we have different personalities, thoughts, and directions we wish to move the Church in. However, our oneness through connection is the essential force to move the Church forward with God’s purpose.

The Connection to the Church Jesus connected our broken relationship with God. Recall, we were remotely disconnected because of sin, and through His grueling act of sacrifice on the cross, Jesus has become the greatest connector. Therefore, our connection to each other must be greater than what divides us. We must strive to build a healthy relationship and learn to trust each other while focusing on and doing what is in the best interest of the Church.

We are the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church recognizing the importance of Christ in our daily lives.

THE GREAT COMMISSION IN REAL TIME: IMPACTING THE LIFE AND WITNESS OF THE CHURCH THROUGH MINISTRIES In the past three Helping Hands Bulletins, I have kept before us the spirit and intent of the Great Commission (Matthew 28:16-20) and our role in making it come alive. In this April writing, I want to conclude this series by capturing the primary content of the presentation I shared during the CME 2021 Unity Summit.

What Is the Great Commission? The challenge and authority given to the apostles by Jesus to reach every man, woman, and child in the world with the good news of God's love, forgiveness, and salvation. Matthew 28:18-20 says, “18 All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

What is Ministry? Being sensitive to and addressing the needs of others. We must have a mind to engage in ministry, not as a vocation, but as a way of life.

What is Real Time? The actual time during which a process takes place, or an event occurs; if something is done in real time, there is no noticeable delay between the action and its effect or consequence. As fast as required.

•

Who is responsible to fulfill the Great Commission? The Answer, all Christian Believers: In John 20:21, Jesus said to His disciples, “As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.”

Thus, all believers and the ministries of which they are a part should/must seek to purposely impact the evangelical life and witness of the church. Hence, all believers and all ministries must have at the core of their focus, fulfilling the great commission. All activities should somehow speak to and/or promote the saving grace of Jesus the Christ.

All ministries within the Body of Christ should be working individually and collaboratively in finding natural ways of acting on and promoting the spirit and intent of the Great Commission in “real time!” In “real time” (today’s time), this means taking a purposeful and sincere assessment of what may have become routine, when there is a coming together in person or virtually . . . In real time, all ministries must stress support and promote and be collaboratively active in their churches’ outreach efforts; and attitudes and actions in real time will reflect the fact that we are offering those who are lost, an opportunity for eternal life – salvation through Jesus Christ. Thus, in real time our ministries must develop individual and collaborative plans of action that will better address the spiritual and physical needs of the masses. And In real time, our ministries must work at and remember, The Great Commission is to be fulfilled not merely through individual efforts, but through local, district, region, and connectional ministries.

Today, we are experiencing the concept of change as we have become greater witnesses to the power of GOD to sustain us and keep us just as He did with the children of Israel. He was able to deliver them many times over as they journeyed from bondage into the exodus into the wilderness. Through the past months, we have gone through many paths of change. But through it all, we give Him praise for the covering that has protected and kept us in our quest to remain steadfast and trusting in all His promises. In these life lessons, we have come to understand that some changes occur because of necessity; preparing the way for growth and development. Other changes take place to create a more harmonious environment among groups or the masses. While still others are unwarranted but occur just the same. In these, we learn to make the best out of the situation, for in God we are more than conquerors. (Romans 8:37, KJV).

So then, as it is within our great Zion and the churches across the connection, the Ministers’ Spouses, Widows and Widowers Department has begun to embrace the concept and plans for change. The cycle of life has subsequently come full circle for many of us in ministries and leadership. In the aftermath of the pandemic as new ministries unfold and the leadership of these change over, we too must continue to trust and see God as our tower of refuge. Believing in the blessings that He has provided us with over the past years of fellowship, leadership, and stewardship. Change allows us to take an assessment of where we are, where we come from and where we are headed. We acknowledge that change sometimes does not allow us to see or feel the possible goodness in all things. And although God may allow us to go through a struggle, it is not to our Defeat, but is to our VICTORY.

Therefore, we give thanks for those who have served, ministered, and imparted wisdom along the way.

Now that a change is coming, we will continue to stand on our faith, knowing that God’s promises endure forever. We welcome the newness of life as we look to cherish what is about to become a part of our life lessons and experience. There is a song in which the lyrics state, “what if our blessings come through rain drops or our healing through tears; we will trust, even still, that these are mercies in disguise.” As believers, we are still to give God glory no matter what our circumstances turn out to be. Even in the depths of all we may face, Jesus is our Lord and Savior and will forever be with us. A gift of HOPE…Jesus is the alpha and the omega .

Carter Temple Chicago Plans MixedUse Development Rev. Dr. Joseph B. Gordon, Pastor

In October of 2021, Carter Temple CME Church’s vacant site at 79th & State was selected as an Equitable Transit-Oriented Development (ETOD) pilot program site by the city of Chicago. Our selection also includes a $15,000 grant to be used for community conversations, designs, outreach, and other community engagement. ETOD is development that enables all people, regardless of income, race, ethnicity, age, gender, or immigration status, the ability to experience the benefits of dense, mixed-use, pedestrian-oriented development near transit hubs.

It elevates and prioritizes investments that close the socioeconomic gaps so prevalent in urban communities.

The ETOD pilot program, the first of its kind in the city, also provides the church and our community development corporation, Carter Temple CDC, with priority status and technical assistance to navigate our Gateway 79 project. Gateway 79 is the development of a mixed use, senior and family housing complex, which includes over 14,000 square feet of retail space.

In alignment with the Greater Chatham Initiative Comprehensive Plan, Gateway 79 will revitalize the largest transit hub on Chicago’s Southside and address housing affordability concerns in the community. Our project was selected to showcase and nourish the soul of Chatham by supporting community growth efforts, through community workforce and business support programs, mental health initiatives, and reinforcing the strengths of the African American family. The site will serve as an inter-generational pillar by providing affordable housing options for the growing population of workforce families relocating back to the community and supports the aging senior population.

Henry Williamson and Sylvester Williams, Sr., the estimated $20 million project is on schedule to begin in the summer of 2023. The news of our ambitious project was met with excitement throughout the city, and led to television and radio interviews, news articles, and offers of partnership and support from government and community leaders. Prior to the groundbreaking, plans are being finalized to utilize the site as a POPcourt, transforming our empty lot into a bright and welcoming public open space in the Chatham community. The temporary, flexible space will be used for public art, community concerts, sports, and other community-based activities.

These phased plans for development and community engagement are all part of Carter Temple’s continuing commitment to our neighborhood in this our 100th year and beyond. During the pandemic, we have been able to bless our neighbors and local businesses with masks, COVID testing, and vaccination clinics, as well as rental assistance and microgrants totaling over $25,000. None of this work is possible without the support of a faithful congregation and our wonderful community partners. We believe that change happens through community, and power, through partnership.

Carter Temple is committed to healthy partnerships, affordable housing, community wealth building, and being a catalyst for change and economic development.

To the glory of God, our vision is to be a driver of positive transformation that allows for a more vibrant, prosperous, and resilient neighborhood on Chicago’s Southside. This is ministry that meets the moment. Stay tuned!

Parker has designated first and third Sundays as Church without Walls to better connect with our surrounding community and to make our church presence known and felt. On Sunday, October 17, 2021, St. John CME Church in Washington, DC had our Church Without Walls worship service with the theme, Unity in the Community.

The fall morning air was crisp and the weather was perfect for an outdoor service. Members were asked to wear PINK in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Audio Team put the final touches on the equipment, making sure we could be heard by the surrounding community. The Praise Team gathered to sing praises to our King. The Ministry2-Men of St. John put chairs in rows up front for our special guest and directed traffic as our members and community family arrived.

On this day we were honored to have several community partners: Chaplain Paul Kearney, uniformed police officers and Commander John Branch, all from the Metropolitan Police Department.

Commander John Branch talked with us about gun violence and shared things we could do as a church to help lower the number of gun related deaths and crimes in our community. Our youth were on program on this very special day as we realized that they are not only our future, but they are very much our present. Members greeted each other and the Ward 8 Community -- many of whom they had not seen in person since the shelter-in-place mandate.

Pastor Parker preached from 1 Samuel 30:8, “David asks God if he should go after the raiders, and God responds, ‘Yes, go after them. You will surely recover everything that was taken from you.’” The sermon title, From Tragedy to Victory, told us how we can encourage ourselves in this walk called life. The overall vibe was one of Gratefulness, Thanksgiving and Community. Hope, Excitement and Expectation filled the air as a young woman with her two nieces came forward to dedicate her life to Christ.

Such was not the case on a Sunday three years ago in 2018 when gunshots rang out following worship service and another young African American male was

dead. By God’s grace many of us made it to our cars after church and back to our homes before the news of the tragedy that took place right outside our church’s doors unfolded. A young man had been shot and killed on his way to the neighborhood store. How could something like this happen right outside our church doors, leaving a mother, a family, and a community grieving? A memorial, that was set up by the young man’s mother on the church grounds, reminds us that a young life was taken away from us too soon. It also reminds us of the importance of the church’s presence in the community and the fact that we need more Sundays like today, to deliver a message of hope not despair, of peace not violence, of love not hate. “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples if you love one another” (John 13:35).

The Good News: One of the ways we can demonstrate our love for the Lord is to be compassionate and caring towards those we encounter here on Earth. Even small gestures can mean a great deal.

In spite of a global pandemic that has affected each of us in some way or another, the members of New Mount Zion CME Church, New Smyrna Beach, Florida, have continued to be a blessing in the community!

Last year (2021), “Thanksgiving Blessings,” including turkeys, and some with both turkeys and gift cards, were extended to 20 families. Our “Christmas Cheer” included toys and gifts for 30 children from the Babe James Community Center, a $1,000 donation to the Oretha Bell Boys & Girls Club (in memory of the late Commissioner Oretha Bell and long-time member of New Mount Zion), a $500 donation to the Florida United Methodist Children’s Home, and a $300 donation to Young Blacks in Action, Inc. (YBA), President, Howard Gentry of Orlando, Florida.

We have been blessed to update the church sanctuary with the installation of new windows, carpet, front entry doors, insulation, reupholstery of pews, media booth, and a new ceiling in the dining area. We also added new media equipment – computers, monitors, tv’s, cameras, software, and internet access – to allow us to stream our services to Facebook, Zoom, and YouTube, all coordinated by Media & Technical Engineer, Derrell Cockerham.

It is our desire to be a blessing to everyone, especially those in need!

While the membership at New Mount Zion is small, we sometimes call ourselves the “little church that could!”

But, most importantly, [we are] the little church that serves a BIG God, and nothing is impossible through Him! In 2020, New Mount Zion blessed 15 families with turkeys for Thanksgiving, and for Christmas provided gifts and toys for 10 children from the Babe James Community Center, 10 children from the Oretha Bell Boys & Girls Club, and duffle bags for the entire Volusia County region consisting of 87 children at the Florida United Methodist Children’s Home (as a result of learning that the children did not have bags or luggage, but are sent to foster homes with their belongings in garbage bags). Thank you First Lady Alicia Blackshear Rollerson for sharing that information with us, and thanks be to God, we were able to act on it! Our first $500 scholarship, the ORETHA BELL/WILLIAM H. PAULK/BERLEY & DELORES PRUITT SCHOLARSHIP was awarded to Faith Fletcher, 4.0 GPA student, who attends Daytona Beach College.

During the COVID-19 pandemic New Mount Zion was blessed to receive many donations. Thank you for your continued support! Shreveport District Virtual Sunday School Class Submitted by Rev. Manuel Henderson, Pastor, Lane Chapel CME Church and Presiding Elder Larry D. Anders

When the Pandemic hit in 2020 and the physical doors of the church were closed, Rev. Manuel Henderson, Pastor of Lane Chapel CME Church in Shreveport, LA, was inspired to host a Zoom Sunday School Class for the District. Two years later, the Virtual Sunday School Class is still growing with an average of 60-75 members zooming in from across the district each week. Held every Sunday morning from 9:00 a.m. until 10:15 a.m., lessons are taught on a rotating schedule by pastors and lay members from Lane Chapel, St. Luke, New Hill, New Hope, Williams Memorial and Wesley Chapel. Utilizing the Discovery Series Literature and other resources, lessons include PowerPoint Presentations, Teacher Made Videos, Role Playing, Team Teaching, Life Application, and Q & A as well as traditional methods of instruction. Pastors and lay members actively respond during the lesson as they are challenged to deep dive into the Word of God. Recordings of the lessons are available upon request for persons who were unable to attend as well as those who may want to review the lesson.

The Sunday School Class received a special treat when Associate Bishop Othal H. Lakey, 4th Episcopal District, taught the lesson on Sunday, January 16, 2022. The topic of the lesson, “The Laws of Justice and Mercy,” was based upon Exodus 23:1-12. Over 89 persons zoomed in and listened intently as Bishop Lakey explained the importance of Sunday School, Penson Named Alum of the Year described the "hermeneutics” of Scripture and Submitted by Rev. Dr. Cheryl Penson presented a poignant and thought-provoking lesson Pastor, Lane Chapel CME Church on the printed Scripture. Livestreamed on the Northeast Mississippi Region Shreveport District Facebook page, over sixty persons were in attendance online during the lesson with over eight hundred views and twenty shares since the post. Even though many congregations have returned to in-person/hybrid worship, the Virtual Sunday School Class remains a powerful ministry for Biblical instruction, interpretation, intense discussion and corporate prayer.

Shreveport District is under the leadership of Rev. Larry D. Anders, Presiding Elder and Pastor of Wesley Chapel CME Church, and Sister Annetta Garner, Director of the Board of Christian Education and Formation. Rev. Manuel Henderson is the chair of the Shreveport District Leadership Team and a member of the Board of Christian Education and Formation.

On Sunday, November 21, 2021, Israel Metropolitan CME Church (IMC), Greenville, South Carolina, gathered with friends and family under the dynamic, visionary leadership of Rev. Courtney L. Adams, Pastor, to honor and recognize those who made this 128th anniversary celebration possible.

Our spiritual nurturing began in a brush arbor at Mt. Olive CME Church in the Fishtrap Community of Easley, South Carolina. Due to an economic shift, a few members of Mt. Olive CME migrated from an agrarian community to Greenville in hopes of securing better employment. They brought with them the spirit of Christ.

Small in number but strong in faith, they congregated in each other’s homes for prayer and worship.

In 1893, with God’s blessings and $490 from Mt. Olive CME, Trustees Floyd Williams, James Miller, Peter Miller, Charles Smith, and Sam Nixon purchased a tract of land on Birnie Street on which Israel Chapel Colored Methodist Episcopal Church was erected.

Twenty-three years later with the mortgage liquidated and an increase in membership, another tract of land was purchased on the north side of Calhoun Street for $2,500. In 1920, this property was sold, and a new edifice was constructed of stucco and brick on North Calhoun Street.

The word “Colored” was deleted and replaced with “Christian” in keeping with a resolution presented

by Dr. Channing H. Tobias to the General Conference on May 12, 1954. His premise was “… the Church of Jesus Christ is a fellowship of all believers who know the Lord and Master and worship Him in spirit and truth, and that no exclusion of any follower from participation in the organized work of His kingdom on account of race, color, or national origin is justifiable.”

In the 1960’s “Chapel” was deleted and replaced with “Metropolitan” to reflect an increase in membership. Because of her open door policy, Israel became known as “The Friendly Church.”

This 128th church anniversary was the anniversary of the century! Service began at 10:00 a.m. Our 20

Submissions theme was, “We Gather as a Faith Community” to hear the Word, to renew commitment, and to disperse in mission. Rev. Ray Chappell was our Worship Leader; and Robyn McGhee, guest psalmist and songwriter, and the IMC Praise Team led us in worship through song. Minster Brenda Springs read the Scripture, Psalm 23. Eunice C. Guyton, Church Historian, presented the anniversary historical highlights.

Dr. Charles Jenkins, author, songwriter, film producer, who served as Senior Pastor for twenty years at the historic Fellowship Baptist Church in Chicago, delivered the Anniversary Sermon. His text was taken from Acts 2:38 and his theme was, “God’s Transportation System.” He reminded us that transportation systems need drivers. However, the ultimate driver in the Christian’s life is God whose transportation system moves us from faith to faith, and grace to grace. God uses us and “things” to drive the Church: (1) Vision which is God’s blueprint, layout, and objectives. The Great Commission must be (l-r): First Lady Stephanie Moses and Mary Kay a driving force for the believer; (2) Purpose: God gives his people Representative an assignment. We must be open to His purpose in order to accomplish the vision; (3) Calling: This is God’s invitation and we must walk worthy in our calling; (4) Mission: This is God’s operational plan, the to-do list and the not-to-do list. It is what the believer intends to do to accomplish God’s purpose; and, (5) Goal driven [Goals that drive]: The Creator is in us and with us; therefore, we must strive to “bear more fruit.” If we do what God has asked of us, we will be productive. The Holy Spirit moved throughout the service. Our hearts were full and we were truly blessed, for he certainly gave us food for thought.

Pastor Adams led the church in the invitation to discipleship and prayer, after which he thanked the Black Entrepreneurs and leaders of IMC’s Ministries and Auxiliaries for their active involvement, encouraging those in attendance to support the businesses and engage with the Ministries and Auxiliaries.

Our sanctuary was beautifully adorned with a huge archshaped balloon inscribed with 128th at the bottom of each end. This arch-shaped balloon also was erected in our parking lot facing the church, welcoming the sixteen (16) Black-Owned Entrepreneurs and IMC’s Ministries and Auxiliaries.

Tanekia Duncan, one of our Young Adult members, spearheaded the Black-owned Business Fair Entrepreneurs that celebrated with us. This provided IMC members and the community an opportunity to engage with the vendors and purchase their products.

The growing prevalence of cybercrimes in the Christian world makes it evident that Christians need to acquire certain technical and cybersecurity skills.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced many churches to transition to online worship or smaller in-person congregations; subsequently, pastors and church leaders found themselves turning to digital media in order to provide virtual worship services utilizing cell phones, tablets, computers, and other digital devices.

The unplanned and abrupt move to virtual worship services – with little training, insufficient bandwidth, and lack of preparation resulted in a wealth of poor technology experiences that hindered quality growth for the church’s membership. Many churches struggled to use technology as congregations were propelled into the unfamiliar cyber world.

We have witnessed churches on social media learning by trial and error and the congregation watching in humor (and in horror) as church staff members navigated through technical bloopers. It did not take long to realize that technology is not just about pressing a Go Live button; new technology users learned they were a part of an online world where there are many participants involved in social interactions who can negatively and positively influence online experiences. Like our physical world, the cyber world is made up of a mix of good and evil. The shift to online worship has created stressors and more responsibilities for individuals in church ministries. Many left the ministry in frustration over technology.

For technology to be used effectively, there are different components that must be understood. As anyone knows there will always be a percentage of criminals who consistently commit crimes in our physical world, which is a part of why our jails and prisons remain full. Likewise,

there will always be a percentage of cyber criminals, individuals or a team of people who use technology to commit malicious activities on computer systems and/or networks; consistently committing crimes in the cyber world. Many offenders target individuals, churches, businesses, and governments. The offenders include hackers known as “the invisible enemy” have acquired a particular set of skills that have enabled them to stalk you, steal from you, harass you, and install malware on your devices without you ever laying eyes on them, including breaching a user’s login information.

Ephesians 6:12 (New International Version) tells us, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms”.

Hackers often operate in areas like the dark web where these cybercriminals discuss, purchase, sell, and trade malware, data, and commit illegal activities that are extremely difficult to track. It has become commonplace to read a post from one of our friends on social media that states: ``My account has been hacked, please do not accept new friend requests from me.” It is imperative that Christians learn the importance of cybersecurity, the process of protecting a system against unintended or malicious activity (Lavender, 2020).

As Christians transition into the digital and cyber world to participate in worship services, Bible studies, church meetings and other church activities, congregations are more at risk now than ever. In fact, according to Pew Research Center (2021) there has been a major spike in online usage since the Coronavirus pandemic, providing even more opportunities for hackers to compromise accounts.

The Internet is a network of networks that consists of billions of interconnected networks that connect computers worldwide. It is run by various service providers, individual companies, universities, and

governments. In order for one to connect their computer, phone, or tablet to the Internet, you simply need an Internet Service Provider (ISP) such as AT&T, Spectrum, Verizon, Cox, or Xfinity, or a data plan. Once connected to an Internet Service Provider (ISP), you become part of that provider’s network.

Your provider’s network can also connect to a larger network and become part of another network as well.

Every network on the Internet has a set of unique Internet protocol (IP) address numbers. The network uses these numbers to identify a particular network location and allows information to be sent between devices on a network (Austin, 2017).

Each time an individual uses a computer it has an identifying IP address; thus, when one connects to the Internet it is like being in an ocean with tons of other sea creatures, including sharks. Being in an ocean without the proper survival skills, knowledge, and equipment to protect information makes one vulnerable and is outright dangerous online without proper protection. The more personal information shared on social media, the more conveniences for cybercriminals to crack passwords, which is the main reason criminals plant fun questionnaires on social media that ask for personal information. Once hackers collect certain facts about you, they can utilize cracking algorithm programs to brute force your passwords by using a combination of your revealed personal information such as your birthday, anniversary, pet’s name, a family member’s name, and favorite colors.

Having a good understanding of cybersecurity is essential as the integration of technology used in our churches continues to evolve due to the high demand for online financial management, apps to connect with members, and technology used for online worship. Christians have always been the targets of vicious attacks from the enemy. Psalm 91:4 New International Version states: “He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.” Not only does the Lord protect us, but he also expects us to protect ourselves by gaining the necessary knowledge to be equipped against worldly issues. According to Hosea 4:6 New International Version, “My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge.” Churches have a responsibility to not only protect their computer systems, but also to educate and to safeguard members who have entrusted the pastor and other church leaders with their personal information. The following are a few tips to help protect your church from cyberattacks: ● Use an antivirus system on your computers, smart phones, tablets, etc. ● Enable two-step verification logins ● Keep protective software updated ● Do not open unknown email attachments ● Avoid clicking hyperlinks in suspicious emails (It could be malware.) ● Create a passphrase that includes five words, numbers, and symbols like: Purple#Ismyfavoritecolo6 ● Change your passwords at least every 60 days ● Do not use the same password to access multiple accounts. (If one account is compromised, all other accounts become at risk.) ● Always use a passcode to lock phones, tablets, and smart devices when not in use ● Protect your privacy on social media ● Do not answer “fun” questionnaires on social media ● Use a virtual private network (VPN) to hide your IP address ● Avoid using a public Wi-Fi connections without using a VPN ● Start or become part of a technology ministry at your church that manages IT security and educates the congregation

A Calling to Fulfill: Connectional Chaplain's Retreat and Furthering Specialized Ministries Submitted by Rev. Rose Archer, MDiv

As we entered the New Year, the Chaplains Committee organized a Chaplains Retreat for all active, retired, and aspiring Chaplains throughout the connectional church. This virtual gathering included a time for reflection, worship, and reimagining the way in which God calls and appoints many to non-traditional forms of ministry outside of the pastoral designation. During the retreat, Chaplains had an opportunity to discuss how to collectively further the mission of our church by expanding the language and definition of Specialized Ministries. As we looked across the screens and noted people of all ages and professional backgrounds, this group became a tangible witness and reminder that God continues to call us in and beyond the pulpit. Bishop Teresa Jefferson-Snorton who serves as the Endorsing Agent and Ecumenical Officer for the CME Church shared, “Chaplains represent a diverse group of men and women committed to ministry beyond the walls of the traditional church while maintaining a strong bond to the denomination. The gifts of the group are extensive, and the Connectional Church benefits when the diversity of gifts are recognized in how we define and understand the call to ministry.”

A beautiful mosaic of certified Chaplains shared their diverse contexts of ministries, including those from the federal prison system, the military, healthcare systems, CPE programs, police departments, and much more. The question becomes, how do we guide, mold, and honor the call of others who may come behind us so that regardless of the shape their ministry takes, our great Zion has a place for them? Led by our president, Rev. Dr. Geraldine Daniels, we recognized that the Professional and Specialized Ministries Track within the Book of Discipline was an area that could provide greater clarity and opportunities for how to guide this mission forward. Chair of the retreat, Chaplain Ermanno Willis, suggested that our goal is not to close off the Professional and Specialized Ministries Track to the sole work of Chaplaincy, but rather to recognize the need to make sure other professionals across the ministry are also able to find a place to honor their callings.

The original author of the Professional and Specialized Ministries Track in the Book of Discipline, Rev. Amina McIntyre, a doctoral student at Vanderbilt University and a Chaplain, joined the retreat to offer insight on what led her to first draft this section. She states, “The original resolution came about in trying to navigate my own professional ministerial trajectory. At this time, the CME Church has one specific path within the denomination that leads to a salaried position: pastoring. Simply put, I wanted to expand the terrain. I also was serving as the Director of Specialized Ministries for Atlanta-Rome and GA North regions, with my focus on the arts. That expanded with appointments of other ministers to the Specialized Ministries within their field.”

During the retreat, several Chaplains shared similar experiences, knowing intuitively that while they were called to serve God’s people, there were spaces beyond the immediate context of the local church that also need tending as we embody the hands and feet of Christ. President Daniels [affirmed], “As I listened to the authentic reflections and testimonies of the members of our group during the retreat, they confirmed for me that our presentation of this resolution is necessary for ministerial growth and expansion of our denomination.”

As we emerge as a society forever changed by the pandemic, we will need to continue to promote diverse forms of ministerial professions to address experiences of grief, exposures to primary and vicarious trauma, and transitions in family and social relationships. As Bishop Jefferson-Snorton reflected on her time during the retreat, she concluded, “Our goal is to continue to expand our CME witness and ministries into the ‘hedges and highways’ and the margins of life where people are suffering, estranged from God, or have yet to accept Jesus as their Savior.” May those who offer an answer to this call through the arts, chaplaincy, mental health professions, and other expressions of faithful responsibility, continue to see our Zion as a place where God still calls, ordains, and appoints us to serve a diverse and everchanging world.

Gloster Hattiesburg District (Rev. Eddie Dixon, Presiding Elder) prepared care packages and a Christmas meal to the homeless shelter in Hattiesburg, Mississippi December 11, 2021. Churches in the District contributed monetarily to the project.

The Fieldhouse is the hub of services for the homeless people in Hattiesburg, Ms. The Fieldhouse provides escape from heat and cold, a place to rest, health screening, housing assistance, and other services to homeless men and women in need of escape from life on the street. The goal of the Fieldhouse is to make homelessness a season of life, not a way of life.

The Gloster Hattiesburg District has taken on an active role in contributing to the Fieldhouse for several years. During the Christmas season is our main event for the year. We prepared and delivered a meal of turkey, fried chicken, dressing, string beans, potato salad, dirty rice, and homemade cakes. Personal packages included socks, soap, deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, and wash cloths. Items for the Fieldhouse included paper towel, toilet tissue, paper plates, folks, garbage bags, aluminum pads, mop and mop bucket, and cleaning supplies.

Laity Embracing the Vision Submitted by Brother Carl Montgomery, Lay President Westside Community Christian Methodist Episcopal Church

In keeping with tradition, the Westside Community Christian Methodist Episcopal Church Lay Council held its annual Connectional Lay Day service. The council is led ably by Brother Carl Montgomery, president. The council chose as its theme: “Laity Embracing the Vision” from the scripture, Job 33:15-25. Laity are a source of refuge for our brothers who many times are found in need of assistance and who often find themselves in distress. Historically, the first official reference of an organization for laity in the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church was The Speaker: Colonel Floyd Griffin, Jr. addressed in the episcopal address during the 1910 General Conference. The Westside Community Christian Methodist Episcopal Church celebrates Lay Sunday annually with the support of the church pastor, Rev. Dr. Andre’ C. Loyd, Jr. The Westside family was privileged to have a stellar, distinguished, and prolific speaker, in Brother Floyd Griffin, Jr., a retired United States Army Colonel.

Brother Griffin is an active member of Trinity Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, Milledgeville, Georgia. He has a lifelong commitment to community service and has accumulated many accolades and accomplishments both personally and professionally. He is an astute businessman, a former mayor of Milledgeville, a former Georgia state senator, a proud and distinguished graduate of Tuskegee University, a member of the Tuskegee National Alumni Association, a former trustee of the renowned Tuskegee University, and a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated. Brother Griffin received the James Wimberly Racial Barrier Breaker Award on becoming the first African American mayor of Milledgeville. He is currently a candidate for Georgia Secretary of State.

The lay service included participation by Brother Mark Sommerville who served as the pulpit conductor; Brother Wiley Hardy who served amiably as worship leader; Brother Derrick Borders who made the Graham-Webb-Kennedy Scholarship appeal for funds; and Brother Ezra Gibson, who was tasked with the awesome responsibility of introducing and presenting Brother Griffin to the congregants. Submissions Sommerville called the service to order, and The Voices of Faith opened the service in praise, singing, “Praise the Lord with Me.” Bro. Wiley Hardy gave the invocation and followed by reading the scripture selected for the morning worship service, asking God to move in the service as the laity seek to offer praise and thanksgiving to the Lord Almighty.

The Connectional Lay Day speaker delivered a powerful message of grace and gratitude. Brother Griffin based his message on the passage of scripture recorded in Proverbs 17:22, “a cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” He titled his presentation, “Thank You!” Brother Griffin related that we should all wake up daily with a grateful heart. He said, “If we find that our old ways are not effective, God is speaking to us to change.”

We should be still and know that He is God. Jesus has always been the way, the truth and the light. The laity is tasked with the obligation to study, seek, share, and serve the Church without reservation. Brother Griffin encouraged us to activate the words Jesus spoke in John 14:12, “Very truly I tell you, The Speaker: Colonel Floyd Griffin, Jr. whoever believes in Me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.” Let go of anything that is not of service. Surrender your past. Stand in the truth of God. Change begins at the end of our comfort zone. The laity must continue to increase in numbers and grow in the word of God to show themselves approved.”

We were blessed with melodious songs

by The Voices of Faith, comprised of Sister Apryl Johnson, Sister Patricia Mack-Cole, Brother Jimmy Jucks, and Sister Lynneese Wooten. The Voices were accompanied by musician Sister Phyllis Denson. Rev. Dr. Loyd thanked Brother Griffin for his outstanding message and unselfish participation in the Lay Day service. He announced that Brother Griffin was indeed The Voices of Faith (l-r): Sis. Apryl Johnson, Sis. Patricia a candidate for Georgia Secretary of State. Rev. Dr. Mack-Cole, Bro. Jimmy Jucks, and Sis. Lynneese Wooten Loyd gave the membership appeal and benediction.

Bishop Thomas Participates in MLK Day Submitted by Edith Thrower Bishop Marvin Frank Thomas Sr. was a program participant at the Annual Commemorative Martin Luther King Jr. Coalition March on January 17, 2022, in Cincinnati, Ohio. In bone-chilling weather, Bishop Thomas and several hundred citizens marched from the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center to the city’s historic Washington Park. There, ecumenical, civic, and community leaders addressed the marchers during an interfaith prayer service and encouraged them to keep the dream alive. Bishop Thomas has faithfully supported this organization since his arrival to Cincinnati in 2014.

Ada Milligan Honored for 100th Birthday Submitted by Bonnie Gill Ada Milligan was honored by friends and relatives for her 100th birthday on January 23, 2022, at the Miles Memorial CME Church, Tacoma, Washington, where Rev. Christopher Ruff serves as pastor.

She was born in Hammond, Louisiana, on January 22, 1922, to Alfred and Elsa Gipson (deceased). Ada had 3 brothers and 2 sisters (deceased), and graduated from McKinley High School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She moved to Tacoma after World War II, around 1946.

Ada married Roosevelt Milligan, who was a construction worker.

Mr. Milligan preceded her in death in 1969. This marriage was blessed with 2 daughters, 5 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren (one of whom is now deceased), and 3 great-great grandchildren.

In addition to being a wife and mother, she has been an active, faithful, and longtime member of Miles Memorial Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, Tacoma, Washington, for over 60 years, where she served as the president of the Stewardess Board and a member of the Missionary Society.

Ada was employed as a seamstress, repairing uniforms for Army soldiers at Fort Lewis, Washington (now Joint Base Lewis McCord), beginning civilian work in 1951. Ada retired from Civil Service at Fort Lewis in 1986 after 35 years of service.

Ada’s favorite song is, “Walk with Me Lord,” and her words of wisdom: “I have seen many struggles of changes in my life and have had to adapt to the changes.”

Her hobbies include sewing for her family and friends, gardening and planting beautiful plants. During a long and productive lifetime, she has demonstrated in countless ways her dedication to the welfare of others and has earned the respect and affection of people from all walks of life and all ages.

She has lived during the most eventful century of this world’s history, and in her quiet way has been a force for good and a stabilizing influence on those around her during these turbulent years.

We are so blessed to have Sis. Ada in our congregation. She is always cheerful and has a smile for everyone she greets. We know that God has smiled on her, and we love her dearly. May God continue to bless her.

On August 31, 2021, St. Paul CME Church, Crawford, Alabama, unveiled its granite, eye-catching cornerstone on the new fellowship hall. The ceremony was held outside following the morning worship service. Further, the illustrious Rev. Dr. Raynetta Prevo-Williams (l-r): Rev. Dr. Raynetta Prevo-Williams, Pastor; Bishop Teresa JeffersonSnorton; Rev. James Q. Smith, Presiding Elder; James Sellers; Elma J. shared a moving, spiritual meditation regarding Holmes-Glaze; and Rev. John L. Johnson.

"Faith," from Hebrews 1:1. The message left an indelible impression on everyone present. The Litany was led by the pastor, with the members participating by reciting: We unveil this cornerstone. We unveil this cornerstone in the name of Almighty God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit unto the ages of Ages, World without end. Amen.

James Sellers, Trustee Chairman, shared words of thanks to our Pastor Prevo-Williams for her humble spirit and encouraging words as the work on the building continued, expressions of thanks to the members for their parts and roles in the process, and special thanks to all trustees for their willingness to go the extra mile.

We will never forget Rev. John Johnson for his guidance and expertise. Many thanks to Brother Lawrence Johnson, Jr. who donated and installed the cornerstone.

Heavenly Father, thank you for being with us during our challenges. We are reminded in 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (KJV), in everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus Concerning you. Amen.

Every Day a Black History Day Submitted by Jacqueline A. Ewings Harris Memorial CME Church

I would like to take a few minutes to share with you a moment in Black History.

In 1916, Carter G. Woodson saw a need to recognize and highlight the accomplishment and contributions of African American people, which lead to him publishing, “The Journal of Negro History.” Carter is known as the “Father of Black History Month” because he created Negro History Week in 1926. This was just the beginning.

In 1976, President Gerald Ford officially extended Woodson’s Black History Week to Black History Month.

This year we are celebrating the 46th year of Black History Month.

The world today is ever changing with systemic racism, police brutality, and other racial injustices. We as a people must put forth an effort to “keep Black history alive” as it is written.

We are currently at a point in America, where pundits are goading education systems to whitewash history and forgo factual black history about slavery, Civil Rights, social injustice, voters rights, and the latest critical race theory. The purpose of this shift is to ensure divisive topics like slavery and civil rights placate Caucasian children to avoid feeling guilty or discomfort in classrooms during lessons. But, what about our Black children and their feelings? Many of our ancestors were in some way formidable in what is our “black history.”

As parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents we must educate, share and emphasize to our children and especially our young adults the truth of “black history.” We are a people that come from Kings and Queens… knowing with God not is impossible for us.

We are great, innovative, intelligent and gifted people. Just imagine the world without Black people. There would be NO: hair products (Madame C. J. Walker), hair brush (Lydia O. Newman), traffic signal and gas mask (Garrett Morgan), letter drop mailbox (Philip Downing), filament for the light bulb (Lewis H. Latimer), Super Soaker toy (Lonnie Johnson), cell phone (Henry T. Samson), and the list goes on with many other notable “Black inventor” firsts.

So, in honor and celebration of Black History Month, I challenge you to make every day a Black History Day” ... a day to embrace our rich African American heritage. In an effort to keep our Black history alive, we all have a duty. Systemic Racism is real, the attempt to whitewash history in schools is real, and voter suppression is real. Each day in 2022, let’s find a way to support Black businesses and/or Black history to honor our Black heritage.

For those interested in taking one additional step in the community ... write to your local lawmakers when issues arise that should be addressed. Let’s not turn a blind eye to blatant wrongdoings – let your voice be heard, and let lawmakers know WE have the power to keep or remove them from office. This is why WE as a Black community must stay united and VOTE! If you or someone you know is not registered to vote, visit https://vote. gov/ and REGISTER TODAY! In the words of Martin Luther King, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” Always, remember we as a collective people have POWER – the power to speak and the power to make changes. Make an impact today and speak up for our exceptional African-American history and heritage.

What do young Christians want?

For much of my Christian journey, particularly as a participant in ministry, variations of the same question have been asked of me rather frequently. It may be presented through the lens of church growth and retention or simply a neutral curiosity. However, regardless of the motivations behind asking, the inquiries all boil down to the same idea—what do young people want from the church? From desires for town halls and community forums to the conception of individual podcasts, the answer is painfully obvious. And while I try my best to be careful about speaking on behalf of other people without their consent, I would argue that young people, across generations, desire one thing in particular: dialogue, not only to be heard but understood. Young people in the A.M.E. Church today have been barraged with a range of topics that many of us, if we are truly honest with ourselves, too wonder about quite a bit. From LGBTQIA marriage rights to the Israel-Palestine conflict, young Christians and older Christians alike are grappling with how Jesus would engage in these conversations if he were present physically on earth with us today.

So, where do we begin?

The first step in embracing healthy dialogue about difficult topics in our churches is to make a very important distinction—dialogue versus debate. This distinction is critical because if the vehicle of dialogue is mishandled, the church could easily end up doing more harm than good. Dialogue is the process of entering a space with differing points of view and aiming to leave the conversation able to explain the other person’s point of view. The goal of dialogue is understanding. On the contrary, the focus of debate is invalidating the other perspective and uplifting my own. The goal of debate is winning. The Institute for Islamic, Christian, and Jewish Studies has a tremendous breakdown of this distinction here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHnmysaDuNY. Is there no room for debate in the Church?

So, is there no room for debate in religious life? What about apologetics or the defense of the faith? There absolutely is. Debate is not inherently bad. There are select scenarios that call for healthy debate. For instance, we should engage in debate as an exercise in conversations to better understand our own points of view. It instead should be used intentionally and with the self-sacrificial love and the intellectual thoughtfulness that Christ models for us.

Does dialogue require me to be a spiritual relativist?

Good question—not necessarily. As Christians, there are many absolutist positions we have chosen about things such as murder and assault. However, some things are a little less black and white. Dialogue requires all of us to lean into those nuances and shades of gray with our young people as we both aim to make sense of things with the word of God as our guide.

What does that look like?

In order to fully incorporate dialogue into our churches, a few things need to happen first. We must eliminate power dynamics that make fruitful conversation challenging, own our areas of uncertainty, and humanize the

Ecumenical News Continued from previous page clergy that pour into us. In a conversation with a high school student earlier this year, I was truly shaken by his conviction. He said, “I think I would respect the church much more if preachers were comfortable saying that they don’t know.” These three things are requirements for best dialogue practices to essentially accomplish the same thing—level the ground on which we host this discussion. We must welcome opportunities to admit when absolute answers escape us, no matter how uncomfortable that is. Why? Because it is easier to seek the God that knows the answer alongside someone that loves and respects you than someone you see as your opponent.

What makes you so sure?

In closing, I would like to demonstrate this practice now. How am I sure that this is the answer? I’m not. But, I hope in these reflections, it has become clear why this is my authentic stance. Thank you for engaging in this dialogue with me.

It is no secret that the people of God often disagree. For example, the story of the two prophets who disagreed in 1 Kings 13, the disagreement between Paul and Barnabas over the role of Mark in Acts 15:3641, the denial of Peter concerning the presence of Christ in his life in Luke 22:54-62, and the disagreement between Euodia and Syntyche, two people who worked with Paul in the Christian ministry, in Philippians 4 provide credence to the assertion that people who love the Lord often disagree. Even though Jesus instructed his disciples to love their enemies (Matthew 5:44), as members of the body of Christ, I don’t believe that Christians should view one another as enemies. However, inasmuch as disagreeing Christians may inadvertently or blatantly undermine the progress of ministry, perhaps, disagreeing Christians should properly view one another as “opponents” from time to time. The question that often confronts disagreeing Christians is as follows: What should you do when you strongly disagree with your Christian opponent who also loves God? The following three suggestions have assisted me in moving forward with my Christian calling or mandate in the midst of Christians with whom I disagree. 1) Don’t dismiss the voice of God even if you determine that God is speaking through your Christian “opponent.” An omnipotent (all-powerful) God may choose to use anyone or anything (e.g., God spoke through a donkey in Numbers 22:28) to communicate God’s intent for humanity. We must be receptive to God’s voice whenever, wherever, and however it may be found. 2) Don’t be deterred by your opponent because your unique task in salvation history can only be accomplished by you. God has specific plans for you (see Jeremiah 29:11); therefore, seek to perform the ministerial task that God has entrusted you to do. 3).

Don’t ever forget that the Christian story is a story of love and redemption; therefore, your “Christian opponent” is not necessarily a permanent opponent. Leave room for reconciliation as you search for command ground with your brother or sister in Christ.

The biblical record stated that King Josiah eventually died because he didn’t listen to the voice of the Lord, which originated from an unlikely place (e.g., the mouth of King Necho of Egypt, which is recorded in 2 Chronicles 35:20).” Let us continue to pray that we might recognize and embrace God’s voice and instruction wherever, whenever, and however it may be found.

Joining the Great Cloud

Sheridan H. Banks Sheridan Maxine Hicks Banks was born on February 5, 1935, in Memphis, Tennessee, to the late Horace Andrew and Shirley Virginia Hicks (née Person). She was older sister to one brother, Horace Andrew Hicks, Jr. (Bubba), who preceded her in death. Horace and Shirley had a nickname for Sheridan also, calling her ‘Baby’ into her adult years. Sheridan attended the Cooperative Academy and La Rose School for her primary and elementary education. The Hickses were a family of purpose, passion, and playfulness. They also had a long legacy of Christian discipleship. Sheridan was baptized at the age of fourteen at Mount Olive CME Church in Memphis, where her family attended.

Sheridan’s parents worked hard and, in 1952, despite great systematic racial discrimination by local home sellers and bankers, bought a home in the developing neighborhood of Dixie Heights in Memphis. Sheridan finished her secondary education in that neighborhood, at Hamilton High School, where she met the late Booker Townsend Banks, her classmate and future husband. Sheridan was active at Hamilton and an excellent student, also excelling at playing the piano. Her nickname at school was ‘Billy.’

She was involved in the Student Council, Future Business Leaders of America (Booker was also a member), the Theater Guild, the Library Science Association, the Choral Group, and the National Honor Society. Sheridan graduated Hamilton High School in 1953, and her classmates voted her, ‘The Girl Most Likely to Succeed.’

She earned a scholarship from Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, to attend LeMoyne College in Memphis, an HBCU. At LeMoyne, Sheridan made friends she would cherish for life and pledged into the Beta Tau Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She earned a Bachelor’s in Natural Science in 1957 and began teaching Science and Mathematics in the Memphis City Schools. She was always proud that one of her students was Memphis native and future R&B legend Isaac Hayes.

Soon, Sheridan felt the need to pursue new horizons.

She and a childhood friend, Janice Suggs, also recently graduated, struck out for New York City, where Sheridan worked. She also lived for a while with extended family in Los Angeles, taking advanced science classes at the University of California at Los Angeles. Sheridan returned after a while to Memphis, where she taught in the Memphis City schools and was active in her church and sorority. She began volunteering as a Voter Registrar for Shelby County, an activity she would continue for life.

Sheridan reconnected with Booker, who had graduated college and moved to Chicago, Illinois. They married in 1966 and settled down, welcoming two daughters, Kimberly Virginia and Camille Renee. Her nickname in the Banks home was sometimes ‘Sheri’ and most of the time ‘Momstibubba.’ Sheridan taught in the Chicago Public Schools as a high school Biology and General Science teacher. She cheerfully sponsored student clubs such as the Science Club, the Drama Club, and other social clubs. She was an active member of the National Science Teachers’ Association and regular judge of the Chicago Science Fair, Inc. Throughout her life, Sheridan served alongside her sisters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, working in many capacities such as tutor, fundraiser, and voter registrar. She was active at Bray Temple CME Church, and, until her death, Carter Temple CME Church. She was a Missionary, active on the local and district levels of leadership and service, was a member of the Board of Christian Education, and a volunteer for the Christian Youth Fellowship. Over the years, Sheridan received many awards and commendations, but her mission, no matter what organization, was always to help others get involved.

In retirement, Sheridan didn’t slow down but continued to serve as a voter registrar for Cook County, holding drives at her church and in her community. She worked with her church family as a delegate to many local, regional, and national conferences. She was a reporter for the Missionary Messenger and The Christian Index, both publications of the CME Church. Sheridan had an active greeting card ministry, sending greetings and love offerings throughout the Third Episcopal District to members needing a cheerful word of Christian encouragement and support. After her husband Booker’s death, she and her daughters traveled to Amsterdam, Paris, New York City, Memphis, and, right before the pandemic, New Orleans.

Covid-19 did not hinder Sheridan from activity, as she quickly learned how to navigate virtual meetings via Zoom. She was fully vaccinated by May of 2021, eagerly awaiting the day she could rejoin society with full force.

Sheridan was always overcoming, always looking for the next cause, the next thing she could do to help others.

On September 8, 2021, Sheridan let go of life on Earth for the next thing, the best thing, eternal life with her Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ. She leaves to cherish her memory: her daughters, Kimberly Banks and Camille Banks; nephews Kevin (Arlene) Hicks and William Hicks; a brother by marriage, Frank (Brenda) Banks; niece Murray (Charles) Childers and nephew Larry (Diana) Echols; cousin Vanita Banks; cousins Denise Christopher, David Hall, Jr., and James Dorsey; her sorority sisters; and a host of other nieces, nephews, and friends.

Edgar Parker, D.D.S. Edgar Parker, D.D.S. was born August 16, 1936. He was the 2nd of five children born to Mrs. Rosa Bell Parker and Mr. Walter Parker of West Point, Georgia.

After graduating from 10th Street High School in West Point, Georgia he received a full tuition scholarship to Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. He is a 1960 biology graduate of Morehouse College and a 1966 graduate of Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry in Nashville, Tennessee.

After dental school graduation, Dr. Parker served in the U.S. Army at Fort Riley, Kansas. There he met the distinguished son of Albany, Lt. Col. Dr. Walter Carl Gordon, Jr. Dr. Gordon’s vision of returning to Albany and recruiting an accompanying force of black medical professionals sparked an invitation to Dr. Parker. So, in 1968, instead of settling in Atlanta as planned, he instead joined Dr. Gordon in Albany. Later, in 1970, Dr. Gordon recruited Dr. James Hubbard. This trio resulted in the construction of a shared professional building, the GOHUPAD CLINIC. (This building was later sold to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, and then became the Miriam Worthy Women’s Health Center, and is now part of Albany Area Primary Health Care). The construction of GOHUPAD CLINIC was hampered by the refusal of a local bank to provide financing.

The group, however, was able to secure an SBA loan through the kind assistance of Senator Herman Talmadge and his able-bodied assistant, Mr. Curtis Atkinson. Later, the trio was instrumental in recruiting Dr. Gregg Parker (OB/GYN and brother of Dr. Edgar Parker), Dr. Charlie Humphries (OB/GYN), and Dr. Willie Adams (OB/GYN). This influx of black practitioners coupled with the admission of Dr. Jacob Shirley to the staff of Phoebe Putney in 1965, caused a paradigm shift in healthcare for the black populace.

Dr. Parker was the first dentist of color south of Macon to have membership to the American Dental Association, Georgia Dental Association, and Southwest Georgia Dental Association (1968). He was also a member of the National Dental Association and the Georgia Dental Society. For many years, 40

Dr. Parker was the major provider of dental care for the underserved in Albany and its five surrounding counties. He served the Urban League program, the Head Start program, and the Medicaid program.

In 2010, Dr. Parker was recognized for his years of service by the Georgia Dental Society, North Georgia Division. Dr. Parker retired from the practice of dentistry in 2015, after 50 years of service. Dr. Parker married his beloved wife Mona in 1965 and is the father of two sons Edgar, Jr. (wife Agatha) of Bayonne, New Jersey and Phillip Todd Parker of Orlando, Florida. He has one granddaughter Briana of Atlanta, Georgia. He was a member of Hines Memorial CME Church, a member of the Criterion Club, and a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.

Dr. Parker was among 7 Georgia dentists recognized by the North Georgia division of the Georgia Dental Society at the 2010 inaugural annual Trailblazers for Dentistry award at the “Bridging the Gap Luncheon” in Atlanta.

Dr. Parker departed this life on January 12, 2022. He is survived by his brothers, Mr. Pearson Parker (Bernice) of Alexandria, Virginia, Dr. Gregg Parker (Merita) of Savannah, Georgia; sister, Mrs. Emily Reed of Honolulu Hawaii; cousins, Dr. Carlos Wise (Desonula) of Columbus, Georgia, Mrs. Terry W. Bonner of Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. Charles King, Jr. (Angelica) of Albany, Georgia; nieces, Atty. Monica Parker of Savannah, Georgia, Dr. Susie Goolsby (Jack) of Alexandria, Virginia, Tara Bell (Alford) of Washington DC, Samone Brooks (Ernest) of Jackson Tennessee, Saundra Polk of Memphis, Tennessee; nephews, Corbin King of Albany, Georgia, Pearson Parker, Jr. (Dede) of Alexandria, Virginia, Bernard Willis Parker (Cynthia) of Alexandria, Virginia, Walter Parker (Alyssa) of Santa Rosa, California, Parke Parker of Savannah, Georgia, Dr. Samuel C. Welcome to the Lilly Endowment Clergy Renewal Programs at Christian Theological Seminary!

Lilly Endowment’s Clergy Renewal Programs are administered by the Center for Pastoral Excellence at Christian Theological Seminary.

Through its religion grantmaking, Lilly Endowment, an Indianapolis-based, private philanthropic foundation, seeks to deepen and enrich the lives of American Christians. It does this largely through initiatives to enhance and sustain the quality of ministry in American congregations and parishes.

To this end, National and Indiana Clergy Renewal Programs provide an opportunity for pastors to step away briefly from the persistent obligations of daily parish life and to engage in a period of renewal and reflection. Renewal periods are not vacations but times for intentional exploration and reflection, for drinking again from God’s life-giving waters, for regaining enthusiasm and creativity for ministry.

Details and application materials for the 2022 programs are now available. In the 2022 Lilly Endowment National Clergy Renewal Program and the 2022 Lilly Endowment Clergy Renewal Program for Indiana Congregations, eligible congregations will be able to apply for grants of up to $50,000 each to support a renewal program for their pastor. Up to $15,000 of the grant may be used for congregational expenses associated with the renewal program.
