What Comes After PPP?

According to the Small Business Administration (SBA) website, "The Paycheck Protection Program is a loan designed to provide a direct incentive for small businesses to keep their workers on payroll. First Draw PPP Loans can be used to help fund payroll costs, including benefits, and may also be used to pay for mortgage interest, rent, utilities, worker protection costs related to COVID-19, uninsured property damage costs caused by looting or vandalism during 2020, and certain supplier costs and expenses for operations." (https://www.sba.gov/funding-programs/loans/coronavirus-relief-options/ Rev. Dr. Ore L. Spragin, Jr., paycheck-protection-program/first-draw-ppp-loans). From the start of the program as a Editor response to the 2020 coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, through March 7, 2021, a total of 7,555,249 loans have been approved by 5,474 lenders for a total of $687,374,564,619. Of these, as of March 5, 2021, 5.46% of respondents identified as Black or African American and accounted for 2.08% of aggregate approved dollars or loan values. This data is commensurate with that from a 2018 USAfacts.org survey showing that "... Black Americans own 2.2% of the nation’s 6 million businesses with employees." (https://usafacts.org/ articles/black-women-business-month/)

Many of our churches have applied for and received such loans, but I wonder whether those who have received such loans are making full use of the funds. I do not put myself forward as a financial guru of any kind, but I wonder, how did churches manage their finances before the availability of PPP funds? Now that such funds have been received, how are churches managing those funds? If churches are not having to pay salaries and utilities because of the funds they are receiving, what use is being made of those monies that do come in that are now freed for other purposes? Is the hope to not have to repay the loans? Even if that is the case and does occur, there still remains some money to be accounted for and to be used in good stewardship.

Of course, this is predicated on the assumption that the overall income for a given church has not declined significantly. It is generally agreed that in-person attendance figures are naturally down, but it has also been generally observed that where attempts have been made to stay in some form of contact with the members, and where ministry and outreach have been attempted, especially over social media and through the offer of electronic giving of some kind, finances have remained steady if not increased, even among so-called smaller churches. If PPP money is being used to take care of salary and utility expenses, for example, is other money being used to pay down mortgage principal, or to repair or improve facilities in ways that have previously been impossible due to the lack of funds?

Are new ministries being started and funded with dollars that have now become available? PPP will not last forever.

This brings me to the final point of the question. What are your plans for continued operation and for continuing the ministries and improvements begun during the relief provided by PPP? If you are considering this as extra money, who will provide the extra when the government closes its pocketbook? In the past, it was often said that one should not look a gift horse in the mouth. Well, if you don't look in this horse's mouth, you had better look somewhere.

“From Where I Sit…” The Early Bird …

As a child, my mother often woke my sister and me with the words, “Get up, the early bird catches the worm.” That proverb was meant to encourage us to get up and get started because those who are active and alert in the early morning were more apt to find success that day. Admittedly, as I often turned over for a few more minutes of sleep, my more successful sister never did. This ageless proverb applies to many facets of life, particularly when it comes to investing for retirement. We would all do well to start early. The success of investing is not necessarily tied to the amount of cash you put into investing but rather to dedication, sound decisions, and taking advantage of starting early.

What are the advantages of starting early? Starting early helps you to meet short and long-term goals, gives you time to plan your overall strategies, allows you to react to fluctuating markets, to changing political climates, and to take advantage of compounding.

The compounding principle grows investment at an exponential rate, giving you unbelievable returns at the end of a long-term investment period. The compounding principle is based on several factors, including the investment rate, interest, tax rate, and of course duration (time).

For example, if you invested $10,000 when you were 20, and never made another investment, but left that initial investment to compound at an annual rate of 7% until you reached the age of 73, your investment will have grown to $360,861. Starting that same investment at age 35 under the same conditions will give you $130,792, which is $230,069 less. We know, while compounding can make a significant impact over many years, there may be periods where when your money will not grow, but you get the picture. The earlier you start, the greater your potential for success.

I am grateful that the CME Church understood the strategy of the “early bird” and organized, in 1918, what would eventually be called the General Board of Personnel Services. Today, for our clergy and lay employees of the church in the CME Retirement Plan who are receiving a W-2, we also offer The CME 403(b) Plan. Both plans are an excellent way to achieve your long-term retirement goals, especially when you start early. On the site you will find educational articles on the subjects of retirement and benefits, written by our General Secretary, Dr. Davis, along with other resources to help you and the church get started strategizing about our future.

Starting early is key to succeeding as an investor because indeed, the early bird does catch the worm. Or at least that’s the way I see it …

Getting Back To Basics as “We Envision Our Way Forward Taking Care of God's Business” After the Resurrection Witness Prayer: Lord, help me to be a greater witness for you so that sharing the Gospel of Jesus will not be a task, but a joy.

Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. (NIV) A Word: The text accentuates the importance of received power obtained by the Holy Spirit. This power will allow the boldness the disciples need to be witnesses of Jesus the Christ. However, they are told to wait for the power. The process of waiting should not be in idleness but in quiet moments of preparation, reflection, and anticipation for God’s assignment. The disciples will soon be empowered to witness, allowing them to move as the prophetic voice of God, sharing the story of Jesus in familiar, strange, and faraway places. Wow, what an assignment! However, the waiting becomes moments of prayer also. If we are going to do anything for God, like the disciples, we must seek God in prayer.

The disciples are challenged to evangelistic witness with this text. The time they have spent with Jesus over the last three years makes them agents of change. So, after prayer the only thing left is the manifestation of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, when considering the word “Witness” please take these types of witnesses into consideration: 1.

A credible witness - one who stands on the merit of their own character.

Eyewitness - one who sees an event occur.

Testimonial witness - one who shares from their own experiences.

Expert witness - one who shares gained knowledge through intense study.

What compels you to be a greater witness as a member of the Body of Christ? I challenge you during the season of Pentecost to be intentional about sharing the Gospel. Also, use the power of the Holy Ghost that God has given you to become a change agent and greater witness for Christ.

LAITY ENCOURAGING AND EQUIPPING THE SAVED Amid defending the cross and reaching the lost, we must continue to be diligent in equipping and encouraging those who already know Christ . . . Sometimes those who put their hands to the plow and decide to follow Jesus and work for the cause of God’s Church, need to be encouraged, taught, and directed in doing the work that have been placed in their hands.

Thus, the final (April) scripting of this three-part writing, will focus on Encouraging and Equipping the Saved.

On the inside front page of our Lay Ministry Manual, one will find these words coming from Jesus himself, - “I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no man can work.” John 9:4. . . So often, those who need to be ministered to are the ones who have been called to do the work of Defending the Cross and Reaching the Lost. . .

And many times, there are those who, during their early walk with the Lord, show excitement about working and serving, then suddenly, he/she stops showing up or the ministry work that had been undertaken declines or ceases all together. Often, this is because of the grind of daily life. If those who are strong and have weathered some storms of their own do not answer in the affirmative that, “yes, I am my brother’s keeper” and assume the role of encourager or equipper, the one who was once on fire for Christ, stands a great chance of fading into the background or completely out of the picture.

Thus, in encouraging and equipping the saved, we must ourselves understand and live out the true meaning of John 9:4. . . Our opportunity for encouraging and equipping others has never been more urgent. John 9:4 tells us that Jesus took time on the Sabbath to heal a man who had been blind from birth. . . While we are not healers, we must, in the spirit of Jesus, take time, to be encouragers for those who are saved and doing the work of the church. As CME Laity we were not placed in the world to stand by and watch others struggle in trying to do good. We must have that “while it is day” attitude and seize opportunities to support and train those who have become faithful believers and workers in God’s Church. . . We must not wait for opportunities, - we must look for opportunities “while it is day!” We must teach, by precept and example, that opportunities to encourage and equip should be acted upon daily. -- Day represents opportunity and night signals the loss of that opportunity. When reading John 9:4, I encourage us, as laity, to also live out what Jesus said in John 9:5. - “As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” So, when we say LAITY ENCOURAGING AND EQUIPPING THE SAVED, we are answering the call to let His light shine through our committed actions and helpful attitudes.

Submit a typed 300-400 word essay entitled “Why Advanced Education Is Critical to My Future.”

Be enrolled or planning to enroll, as a freshman in a full-time program of study at an accredited institution of higher learning, vocational, or technical school for the 2020-2021 academic school year.

Submit three current reference letters, (other than relatives or students) one of which must be from the applicant’s current pastor (if the applicant is related to the pastor, an active officer of the local church must write the letter).

Submit your high school transcript inclusive of the first semester grades (or first two (2) trimesters if applicable) for the 2020-2021 school year. Important Note: Applicants who are chosen as winners must submit a final certified transcript bearing the school’s official seal.

Published his first book, Made from My Mother’s Ceilings, in 2017, obtained MA’s in Communication Studies (2018) and Women’s Studies (2020) achieved the title of 3rd best spoken poet in the world in 2018, and produced, wrote, and starred in his first off-Broadway one man show, Black Enough in 2019. Additionally, he is the co-founder and co-executive director of the Flourish Alabama, a nonprofit dedicated to helping artist bloom. Founder and director of Poetry University, and teaches at both the University of Alabama and Lawson State Community College. Jahman’s first short film, Vanderwaal’s Journey, premieres from February 5-11, 2021 on djd thereafter.org. Son of Presiding Elder Anthony (LaTasha) Hill 2015 – Trentyn M. Shaw – Upon high school graduation, Trentyn attended Alabama State University, Montgomery, AL. During his tenure at ASU he was afforded several opportunities that allowed him to gain some priceless experiences.

Starting his sophomore year, was able to complete two internships in Peru as well as compete nationally. One proud moment was attending a 10 week internship at the University of North Texas, competing in Cancer Biology Research, where he placed first out of 27 students. In December 2019, graduated from Alabama State University, Summa Cum Laude: Major-Biology and Minor-Chemistry. Presently attending the University of South Alabama College of Medicine while working in the Genetic Research Lab and the Student Led Free Clinic. Favorite scripture: Isaiah 40:31, is a gentle reminder to his life of renewed strength, purpose and meaning. Son of Rev. Dr. Richard (Dr. Toni) Shaw 2016 – Brianne Holt – A current student studying Graphic Design. Brianne is now in her 4th year at Oakland University majoring in Art. This scholarship has given her the opportunity to continue her higher education in Graphic Designs as well as build her knowledge and passion in music. She is a multi-talented musician who is accomplished in playing the viola, bass guitar, piano, organ and drums. Brianne in her senior year of high school, she performed “The Coveted Senior Solo” playing her viola while the rest of the orchestra accompanied. Grand daughter of Sandra Holt and the late Rev. Dr. Robert L. Holt 2018 – Shynell Moore – Shynell is a Junior at Colorado Mesa University. These past few years have been fun with amazing opportunities. As a freshman, she joined the Black Student Alliance. This group allowed her to connect to people and make friends. Shynell was chosen as a peer mentor for Trio. Shynell takes nothing for granted, while working extremely hard. She is a reisher scholar and has had the distinct honor of being on the Presidents list. Graduating in May 2021 with her BS in exercise science and she will be enrolling in the Athletic Training Program working toward her Masters. She will be forever grateful for the CME Church for awarding her this scholarship. Daughter of Rev. & Mrs. Cameron (Datjaeda) Moore 2019 – Zephaniah Dow – A Sophomore at Prairie View A&M University and pursuing a degree in Business Management and plan on pursuing a Law degree after graduation. In preparation for my transition to post graduation law school, I joined the Blackstone Pre-Law Society, where we meet virtually and attend seminars that allow us to connect with the top law schools in the nation. I am honored to say that because of my passion for the field of law, in my first semester of my freshman year I took a Business Law class and my professor wrote me a law school recommendation letter before we were even halfway done with the semester. I have also been able to achieve Honor Roll each semester and been offered a spot in the PVAMU Honor Program which is only offered students who maintain a 3.5 GPA or higher. Not only am I a full-time student but I also work 30 hours a week. Daughter of Rev. Ed (Antoinette) Dow 2020 – Jalin Finkley – In her second semester as a Freshman at Miles College in Birmingham, Alabama completing her first semester all on line finishing with a 3.7 GPA. “The Black Church?”

I had committed to Editor Spragin that we would try and write to the readers of our Church organ to inform them of what was going on down at Phillips School of Theology at the ITC and to discuss those pertinent issues which our students and faculty are currently grappling with. Recently one such issue had to do with a documentary presented on PBS television about the Black Church and its historical connection to the plight of African Americans. To be sure, and rightfully so, many CME’s were upset and shared their righteous indignation via social media about the conspicuous absence of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, while highlighting the other two major Black Methodist Bodies (AME & AME Zion) and of course the Black Baptist church.

Gates heralded the achievements made by the Black Church and its involvement in the Civil Rights struggles of Blacks throughout history.

However, absent were the obvious contributions from the CME Church and the influential figures such as Alex Haley (author of the book, Roots) a CME from Tennessee; Donald Hollowell (Martin Luther King’s personal attorney), and others. For me this was not a time to stay in that space of anger but rather to ask a larger, probably more

Phillips School of Theology poignant question of the Black Church’s relevance then versus now. Inevitably I want to know, “Have we taken a posture of conjuring up themes and images of what the Black Church used to be? Indeed, have we so romanticized about a bygone time that we have thus become anesthetized and, as a result, are incapable of actually speaking truth to power today because of our notion of what “Used to be?” In other words, have we become spiritually inept, socially and politically impotent, because of our reliance on some notion of what used to be that is no longer relevant or true of the Black Church? This is why this article is titled, “The Black Church?” Because it asks us to crucially evaluate ourselves and not simply reflect back on the “Husharbors” or “back in de woods chuch house” where “Momma an em” stayed all night long.

It is a fact that Black people are not monolithic; nor is the church for that matter. We don’t all think alike nor believe the same thing, but by and large all Black Christians see the God of the Bible as a liberator of the oppressed, and it is out of that context that the power of the Black Church has and continues to find its relevance and power.

And it is that issue that we shall critically examine in our next presentation.

The PST Executive Council (president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, assistant treasurer, chaplain, and parliamentarian) had envisioned and planned transitioning to online at Pastor’s Conference January 2020. Our plans were challenged when COVID became a pandemic. Our attention and energies focused more upon our families, congregations, and ministries as we dealt with impact of the virus. The need to understand what we were all facing became paramount.

The early part of the summer we, the council, regrouped and moved forward. After several conference calls, we made a pivot to have a Facebook presence, increase online giving, host an Advent 16

Revival, and provide videos to form an Alumni worship experience for Pastor’s Conference 2021. I say thank you to all persons that offered videos, sermons, media, and tech support.

Your contributions for scholarships and the building fund made it possible to contribute a total of $10,000 to Phillips School of Theology, our seminary. Contributions from those who contributed toward the building fund efforts came to $7,000. Seminarians that were this year’s scholarship recipients were Rev. Lorenzo Heggs, Rev. Angel Howard, and Rev. William Morgan. Each person was awarded $1,000.

Singing the praises of God to some has become difficult in this day and time. The everyday life challenges and the things that we have no control over are starting to control us. We constantly worry over COVID and forget that my God is stronger than any disease/pandemic or whatever force that may come our way. We worry over how to care for our families and fail to realize, “My God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19) We worry over civil wars in the White House, civil wars in our land, and civil wars over the races. We are taught that there will be wars and rumors of wars.

Matthew 24:6 says, “You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.” The end is yet to come but My God is victorious over any war.

Our fore fathers sang spiritual songs during their time of slavery, during their [struggle] to become equal. Through all their hardships, battles, and fights they still found a reason to sing. They sang as a means of relaying messages to others; they sang to call on the Lord for strength to go on. They sang. Throughout history the Black race has always risen to the challenge. Historically we rise. We have risen above all adversities put before us. We learned how to wait on the Lord. Psalm 27:14 reads, “Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.” To go even further we can run and not faint says Isaiah 40:31 - “But those that wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint."

We are a race of conquerors and we have a reason to sing.

“Walk with me Lord, Walk with me All along this tedious journey I want Jesus to walk with me.”

"We still can reach our goals, overcome our failures, and enjoy success ... but for a different reason. Instead of boasting about what we've achieved in our own capabilities, we can enjoy what God has given abundantly.

Our lives become reflections of His life and love rather than a checklist of human accomplishments."

The Church in Prayer, Connection, Worship and Action Submitted by Rev. Leon Moore General Secretary, Evangelism and Missions, CME Church Pastor, Pleasant Hill CME, Conyers, Georgia

A winter vortex engulfed parts of the southern United States in February. Hearing and seeing the people in the State of Texas suffer from no power for several days was not OK, knowing our sisters and brothers were hurting. I prayed and God led the way on Friday, February 19, 2021, while I was sitting in my car. I made a call to Senior Bishop Lawrence L. Reddick III. We conversed and I asked the following question, “What can the Department of Evangelism and Missions do to help and what is the greatest need?” After a pause, his reply was the need for water in Houston. I said I would like to help. Sr. Bishop stated, “If you can get water to the people, that would be a big help.”

The Church in Prayer

After speaking with Sr. Bishop Reddick, I made a call to Rev. Bonita Collins-Hobbs (Connectional Prayer Ministry Coordinator) and asked her to assemble a team of prayer warriors to pray for the mission. The original plan was to drive to Mississippi, pick up a truck and water, then drive to Houston. I called Dr. Pene’ Woods (Executive Secretary, CME Church) and she called Rev. Gerald Hudson (Pastor, Newell Chapel CME, Meridian, Mississippi) so we could converse. However, Rev. Hudson later informed me that a truck would not be available until February 24, 2021. Rev. Hudson also collected water to send to Houston. My plan was not going to work. I made a call to Ken Porter, a member of Shy Temple CME (Dr. James Clements, Pastor). Bro. Porter and I had driven to Houston a few years earlier when hurricane Harvey hit Houston. I asked Bro. Porter if he was up to ridding to Houston and he replied with excitement, “Whatever we need to do.”

I reserved a truck at Penske and once a truck was secured, water was the next thing we needed. I prayed and began making calls in an effort to find pallets of water. I was finally able to secure the needed water. On Saturday, February 20, 2021, David from Penske called and informed me that they did not have a truck even though I had a reservation. I called the company with the water and they were closed for the weekend. The warehouse had said I could pick up the water on Saturday. I did not panic, after all God had called for this mission, so it was up to God to provide.

David from Penske called and said he had a truck for me, but it was 45 minutes away from me. I looked for water elsewhere, found several pallets and made the purchase. We were now on a roll, only to have a schedule conflict. The water needed to be picked up by noon, the truck was 45 minutes away and it was 11:00 AM. I prayed, “God this is your mission.” Prayer was answered as David met me at the warehouse with the Penske truck so we could load the pallets of water.

I called each Episcopal Leader whose District we would travel through to get to Houston, Texas. Bishop Teresa Jefferson-Snorton and Bishop C. James King offered help and assistance. Next, I called the Chair of the Disaster Relief Committee, Bishop Sylvester Williams, who was also willing to assist.

The Church in Worship

We left Atlanta at 3:30 AM on Sunday morning with six pallets of water headed to Meridian, MS. We arrived in Meridian at 7:45 AM and Rev. Gerald Hudson welcomed us. We picked up an additional two pallets of water (case water) from Newell Chapel CME Church members as more members started showing up with additional water as well.

We finished loading the water and headed to Houston. Bro. Porter joined the worship experience with the Shy Temple family by Zoom. I was present for worship at Pleasant Hill as we celebrated Black History with Rev. Robert Mclaughlin as messenger. We both were able to participate in worship while on the mission. We celebrated Jesus all the way to Houston.

The Church in Action

Our destination was the Metropolitan CME Church in Houston, where we were greeted by Presiding Elder Wayne Mays, Pastor Allen Page, and a plethora of pastors, ministers, and laity of the Houston District. Once at Metropolitan, they began unloading the truck, breaking down the pallets, and loading vehicles with water. What a sight to see the church in action and a Sunday local mission experience seeing the church from the four-phases of prayer, connection, worship, and action. God had a mission and used vessels to execute it as we saw our sisters and brothers hurting and knew that was not the plan of God (Matthew 25: 31-46). God is calling the church to action. How will we answer when we hear and see the people of God in need?

Interview with Presiding Elder Diana Casteel Reported by Geraline Ray, Mt. Lebanon CME Church East Texas Region/ Eighth Episcopal District

P

residing Elder Diana Casteel of the 8th Episcopal District has taken to the streets. In an interview with Elder Casteel on her actions, she had these words to say after the final societal straw that broke the camel’s back: the George Floyd murder by a Minneapolis policeman who, in full view of many people on the streets, knelt on the neck of Mr. George Floyd, a black citizen, as he lay prone on his stomach with arms handcuffed behind his back, pleading for help and protesting that he could not breathe.

Mrs. Ray: As Presiding Elder, you are a leader of the Greenville/Texarkana District Churches in Texas. Why did you choose to participate in a “street” movement, or should I not call it a “street” movement?

Elder Casteel: Mrs. Ray, first, let me thank you for the opportunity to express my involvement in the BLM (Black Lives Matter Movement). Secondly, I want to apologize, to you, why it took me so long to complete this interview. If I had done this interview at the time you wanted, my choice of words would not have been well thought out. During the height of the BLM, I was angry that we are in the 21st century and are still dealing with racism of this magnitude.

Yes, racism has always existed, but I believe it was heightened by the former administration of Donald J. Trump. He did nothing but edge on hatred in this country to further divide us. As a leader, I could not sit back and do nothing. I reflected on the life and work of many Civil Rights Activists who fought and sacrificed so much so we could have a better way of life. It’s because of them that I had to do something.

I did not want their work to be in vain. Senior Bishop Lawrence L. Reddick III wrote that we have made great strides. We elected our first African American President and on January 2021, we witnessed our first African American/Asian American woman to be sworn in as the Vice President of the United States of America. Yes, we have come a long way, but if we are not careful, we will find ourselves slipping backward instead of making progress. That is why I had to move forward and let my voice be heard, even in the middle of 20

a pandemic. I believe we lead by precept and example.

I believe we need to be people of action. It is easy to take to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. about our concerns and how we feel about certain issues, but at the end of the day, we need to ask ourselves, “What else can I do?”

We can take to the “streets” and march, we can and must write those elected officials and tell them they work for the people who elected them. In this season we cannot be silent. This is not a time to be afraid, but to be strong and courageous as the scripture tells us.

Mrs. Ray: What did you hope to accomplish with your movement?

Elder Casteel: We hoped to bring awareness to our local communities. In small towns, people tend to sweep things under the rug. We marched to raise awareness and to let those in our local communities know that we will not be silent to the injustices we see in our communities.

Mrs. Ray: Describe the action you chose to take?

Speak, firstly, to the protest and, secondly, about the prayer vigil with a diversity of races.

Elder Casteel: After the killing of Mr. George Floyd on national television, I wept, I mourned, not only for the family of Mr. Floyd, but for the many ones of us who witnessed this hideous murder with our own eyes. It was at that point that I made up my mind to not only talk about it, but to do something to make a difference. What I saw on television brought back memories of my first encounter with racism in the second grade. It brought back memories of me being racially profiled in 2007 as I drove to Dallas, Texas, to attend class at Perkins School of Theology.

This protest in which I took part was organized by a young, white, 17-year-old female whom I shall call “Kennedy.” She now attends college, and her aspiration is to be a civil rights lawyer. I was so proud of these young people because they were not afraid to take a stand, nor were they afraid to protest in the middle of COVID-19. While we protested, there was a young

Submissions white male who had confederate flags on the back of his truck. He came through and said some ugly things and gave us the middle finger. Others came through and cursed us. My group of young people handled themselves very professionally that day. Whenever others came through with negativity, these young people would say, “May God bless you. “I could not have been prouder to see young black and white males and females come together to do their part to make this land a better place.

I did participate in the prayer vigil which was a diverse group of people and religions; however, I was not moved by this prayer vigil. Although the intentions were right, the motive was wrong. I know you are waiting for me to expound on this.

There was not enough diversity in the planning of the prayer vigil. This group, to a certain extent, put down the actions of the young people who had organized a well-planned protest. (You really had to be there to understand what I mean.) I was totally disappointed in the prayer vigil. It was an event that said we must do this to show that our town is not like those other towns, but the truth of the matter was that “our” town was probably a little worse than other towns/cities.

For example, the name, George Floyd, was not mentioned. No one said, “God is not pleased with the division among us.” No one said that racial profiling and police brutality must stop. How can you have a prayer vigil and not pray or mention the things that prompted you to have it? After thirty minutes of singing and praying, a white male preacher whose church was called The Church Under the Bridge came up to pray. Before he started, he said, “We have been gathered here for a prayer vigil and no one has mentioned what caused us to be here at this point in our lives. God is not pleased with what is going on in this world.” He mentioned the killing of Mr. George Floyd, etc. Afterwards, he proceeded to pray, and I was moved because, finally, someone had acknowledged the reason for our gathering and how disappointed God must be because of our actions. I watched the organizers’ faces and body language and that further confirmed what I had thought. “Mrs. Ray, I remember saying, ‘Lord, forgive us. Forgive those who put their personal agenda before your agenda in planning this prayer vigil.’” There is always a lesson in every situation. That day I was reminded that it is not about me, you, us, but it is all about doing the will of our Father.

Mrs. Ray: What, in your opinion, was the most poignant, heart-wrenching moment of the display of George Floyds’ murder?

Elder Casteel: Oh my, to be honest, Mrs. Ray, I can barely think about that day without tears forming in my eyes. I must say the moment George Floyd cried out for his mother, who was deceased, that broke my heart into many pieces.

The police officer looked as if he was well content with his knee on the neck of this man (a human being) as he repeatedly cried, (I can’t breathe).

Submissions Continued from previous page Mrs. Ray: Describe your feelings for the words of a particular speaker at the prayer vigil.

Elder Casteel: I think I covered this earlier. It was the young white preacher (The Church Under the Bridge) who let the organizers and all in attendance know that God was not pleased with our actions. Up until this point, there was no mention of police brutality, systemic racism, etc.

Mrs. Ray: Do you believe that the actions of young protesters made a greater difference in the actions and/or outcomes of our future society? If so, why?

Elder Casteel: Of course! For the most part these young protesters recognize the injustice of this world and they have a drive and willingness to make things better. I believe that their energy made a difference in the outcome of the presidential election and the election in Georgia.

Mrs. Ray: What impact do you think that other countries, not just the ‘supposedly’ United States, made by showing their solidarity with our cause of justice for all?

Elder Casteel: What we witnessed with our eyes after the murder of Mr. George Floyd from other countries was monumental! They say there is strength in numbers, and I believe the protests that took place in foreign countries had an impact on the United States.

It showed that in times of troubles, we can all come together and stand as one, though we are separated by thousands of miles.

Mrs. Ray: What advice do you have to give to others in our own country, locally, who want to make a difference in societal injustices?

Elder Casteel: The advice that I would give us, locally, is pray first, strategize, and implement. We cannot make a difference silently. If you really want to make a difference, you must put your boots to the ground.

Think about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, John Lewis … they accomplished so much and made a huge difference in society because they prayed, strategized, and implemented their plans.

Mrs. Ray: Many believe that the statues of those known to suppress the justice of black people should be torn down because of the ideas they represented.

What are your thoughts on this?

Elder Casteel: I have mixed emotions. I think that is because I love history, although some of that history is painful, but it reminds us from whence we came and what it took to get us where we are. Now, because of the actions by former administrations and other elected officials, I see the need or urgency for having the statues removed. Yes, I am kind of beating around the bush, so to speak, with this one. (She laughs out loud.)

Mrs. Ray: What, if anything, do you think the stance of our former President should have been to deescalate the racist situations in our country and/or galvanize a change for the future?

Elder Casteel: The former President should have acknowledged the racist situations, but instead, he downplayed racism for four years, just like he did the Coronavirus. Our leaders set the tone for any organization and it is even more expected of the leader of a country. Our former President was too busy trying to belittle others in order to make himself look good and carry out his personal agenda to be concerned with the feelings and concerns of others (his constituents). I believe his actions further divided this country and the people within it when he should have encouraged unity and peace.

Mrs. Ray: Finally, what is the church's stance in situations such as these?

Elder Casteel: The church cannot be silent! It is good to pray. Praying is really good, but after you pray, then what? The Black church must learn to lead the way for change. We must accept that we are a powerful group of people. That is why there are so many attempts to keep us suppressed, oppressed, depressed. Rise up Church!

Thank you, Elder Casteel, for sharing your thoughts with me. Your message awakened a new purpose in me and, hopefully, our readers, about our (the church’s) part as Christians who do what Christ would want us to do.

Mrs. Annie Ruth Hamler Wilson (Eighty-eight-year-old Minister’s Widow, North Central Alabama Region) Submitted by Angie Eatmon

Mrs. Annie Ruth Hamler Wilson is affectionately known as “Annie,” “Ruth,” or “Annie Ruth.” She is a native and long-time resident of Northport, Alabama. She was reared in the loving home of the late Mr. Alfonzo and Mrs. Parmer Hamler, her parents, who thought it was beneficial to follow biblical principles in their home. They were members of Porter St. Paul CME Church, Northport, Alabama, and attended church every Sunday. She was born on December 26, 1932 and was the “baby” of the family.

Mrs. Annie Ruth Wilson is a graduate of the Tuscaloosa County Training School. She and her family understood that education is the golden key to opportunity; therefore, she continued her studies at Miles College and later at Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach, Florida.

She has continued to pursue life-long learning opportunities through numerous workshops, seminars and conferences pertaining to a wide variety of topics.

Mrs. Annie Ruth Wilson’s childhood sweetheart and loving husband for more than forty (40) years was Rev. Dr. George Wilson. Working together as a formidable team for the kingdom of God, they led hundreds of people to Christ. They also nurtured many young men and women through their transformations as ordained elders, bishops, or apostles in many denominations. From Alabama to Florida, at each post or assignment, alongside her husband, Annie Ruth is well remembered as a most gracious first lady. With diligence, she wiped feverish brows, held old and feeble hands, and shopped for and tended to the parishioners. There was no task too large; no task left undone. She did all tasks well without complaining or calling attention to herself. Her love for children led her to serve as a Den Mother for the Boy Scouts of America.

Notably, she served faithfully as a Sunday School teacher, Steward, Stewardess, member of the Missionary Society, CYF Worker, Board of Christian Education (and Formation) member, as well as a choir member. Her melodic style and interpretation of the spirituals are reminiscent of the earlier church experience wherein the congregants followed the leader’s interpretation of the tune and rhythm of each song. This rendition is called “outlining” a hymn or anthem. Her favorite is, “A Charge to Keep I Have.” She was often called upon by several Bishops, as well as Missionary President Thelma Dudley, at the start of the General Conference and the Missionary Quadrennial Session to lead this Hymn. Mrs. Wilson has been a delegate to General Conference (elected 3 times), a delegate to the Missionary Quadrennial Session, Annual Conference President of the Ministers’ Wives (Spouses) and has served the Church in numerous other ministries.

Coming full circle, Mrs. Wilson has returned to her childhood church, Porter St. Paul CME Church in Northport, Alabama, and is very active in the community. She now serves as the matriarch of her loving family which includes her son, George, Jr.; daughter, Beverly; grandchildren, Phillip, Ryan, Kendra, and Gwendolyn; and great-grandchildren, Nicholas Desmond Wilson, Trinity Wilson, Troy Wilson, and Trinity Wilson.

Who Opened the Door?

Submitted by Jessie Faye Manuel Have you ever wondered whether God was opening a door or if something was merely the enemy teasing you with a fresh “opportunity?” It can be difficult to decipher whether your good idea is a “God idea" and a sign from Him. In fact, I am a believer that some things brought our way are merely holy distractions.

Though the opportunity may look “good on paper,” it is simply not meant for you at this moment in your life.

In my own life, I can attest to wasting years following signs I thought God [was giving] only to learn my own ambition led me there, not the voice of God. Likewise, there have been times I missed an open-door opportunity due to fear or my personal confusion. I wonder how much time was wasted in the midst of pursuing opportunities that God had never signed off on. Without the certainty of each day, it is important to have the discernment to know which path to take so we can make the most of our time on Earth. Our choices will have a direct effect on our lives and the lives of generations to come.

Walking through the right doors at the right time is serious business and shouldn’t be taken lightly, but rather with prayer and wisdom.

Through it all, I have learned that there are several pointers and signs that reveal God’s will for His children.

One major aspect of discerning an open door is recognizing whether it will line up to Scripture. Quite simply, the Lord will not “bless” you by giving you the opportunity to sin or contradict His word. Chances are, if your open door causes you to act according to fruit of the flesh, described in Galatians 5:19-21, this is not from God. So, if you get a chance to rob a bank or aggressively confront someone who has hurt you, it is very likely the Holy Spirit is not leading you to do so.

If you’ve been praying specifically, this upcoming opportunity may be an answer to your prayer. Many times, we pray for something, but when God brings the manifestation, we begin to doubt. The truth is God responds to the prayers of His children. We must know that if we are seeking the Lord for one of 24

His promises towards us, He certainly can answer.

Remember, nothing is impossible for God! And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him. (1 John 5:14-16)

Proverbs 11:14 reminds us that victory is won through the advice of many counselors. If you are unsure if this next opportunity is from God, seek a person who operates in wisdom. When you do so, they will be able to recognize possible conflicts without the emotional attachment. However, because you should not be vulnerable with everyone, pray that God will highlight a person you can confide in.

If your open door is a blessing to many around you, it may be from the Lord. This can be tricky at times.

I’ve come to learn that not every good idea is a “God-idea” no matter how many people may benefit from it. Nonetheless, God-given opportunities can have a positive ripple effect for other people. We are called to be a blessing to others. When we do so, this brings glory to the God we represent. Take a moment to evaluate how walking through this door will positively or negatively affect others.

David wrote Psalm 86 when he was facing tough circumstances. Plans didn’t go the way he wanted them to, either. I’m inspired by the way he chose to praise God in times of uncertainty. Through the whys. David believed in the power of worship. He reminded himself of the unchanging character of God and poured his heart out to Him honestly and wholly.

When we drain our frustrations onto the feet of God, He is faithful, compassionate, and full of mercy. He is forgiving when we’ve sunk our own battleship, and reliable when we are defenseless.

Let us pray now for an undivided heart that relies on God, not our own plans: Father,

Give us undivided hearts, that we may rely on your faithfulness. Let us break the pattern of running on the hamster wheel full of anxious

Submissions thoughts and man-made solutions, and lift our arms, voices, and eyes fully to you in full surrender and praise. You are in control, even when our world is unraveling. Your plans for us are good and cannot be thwarted.

We were never promised this world would be easy on us, yet we are still shocked by its depravity and injustice. Soothe our wounds, Lord.

Save us, Lord Jesus, from ourselves, and our own toxic thought spirals. Develop in us a pattern of turning to you first, every day, so that when our plans are shredded, we default to praise.

Jesus, you died so we could live life to the full, yet so often we allow the devil to kill,

steal, and destroy. Increase our capacity to see through those lies, and guard our hearts from evil schemes, Lord. Comfort and encourage us. Help us to stand up, walk one step at a time, and trust You with our shredded plans.

Guide our children to your feet, and use our faithful seeking and worship of you in good times and in hard, as assurance they can depend on you in all circumstances. We know everything you do is done in order to draw us closer to you. Remind us, when the proverbial rug has been yanked from underneath our feet, that your arms are fully capable of holding us.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

The St. Matthew CME Church of Leesville, South Carolina (Charleston-Columbia District, Carolina Region) held their Fifth Annual Women of Wisdom (W.o.W.) Conference on October 31, 2020, with host pastor, Reverend Thomasena Rice. The event was held as a “virtual” spiritual experience due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The theme for the conference was, “20/20 Vision – Focusing on the Word.” The dynamic speakers are shown below.

Do You Want to Be a Delegate?

Once again, the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church (CME Church) is on the cusp of preparing to elect delegates for the 2021 General Conference. As we approach the annual conference, there are many of us who are nursing the thought of offering ourselves to serve as a delegate. With this in mind, we must search our hearts. We must ask ourselves some fundamental questions grounded in our religious dispensation, faith, and spiritual commitment: • Why do I want to be a delegate?

• How will my presence at the General Conference enhance the CME Church?

• Am I interested in the direction of the CME and its spiritual legacy or just the fellowship offered by the conference?

Serving under Senior Bishop L.L. Reddick III and Bishop Kenneth W. Carter, I have learned and internalized the concept that the General Conference is first of all a business conference during which we add to, delete from, or revise the Book of Discipline. At the 2018 General Conference, Dr. Jermaine Marshall offered me the opportunity to serve on the secretarial staff. This appointment provided me the opportunity and proximity to enhance and understand how the conference functions and to witness firsthand the in-depth efforts, rigor, and intensity involved in completing the business at hand.

Being a delegate means you must be ready for long, intense, and intellectually challenging business sessions and meetings. Though the committees are led by capable and competent individuals, the sometimes complex and sensitive issues adumbrated call for intense deliberations which can extend well into the night. In fact, the General Conference sets forth the direction for and guidelines of the CME Church. There are resolutions which seek to challenge and change long-standing rules and traditions or standards in order to render the church and denomination relevant and vibrant at times like these when the status quo no longer seems to attract the new generations of Christians. Discussing these issues must be done with cogitation, humility, and honesty. We cannot have a lackadaisical approach to the business of the church. We are talking about issues which not only will have an impact and profound ramifications on us today but also on the generations to follow. It should be our intent to pass on to posterity a stable, strong, and vibrant church and legacy. This cannot be done half-heartedly.

Though the General Conference is a business meeting, there are opportunities for us to gather in worship and thanksgiving. The mere fact that we have set aside times for worship is an indication of the importance of approaching the conference from a spiritual perspective. First, I am reminded of I Corinthians 14:40 which states in the NLT, “Be sure that everything is done properly and in order.” In other words, we must approach the conference with a spirit of excellence and dedication. Not only should it be our aim to complete all of the business of the conference but to do so in a manner that God would be uplifted and glorified. Secondly, we must be prayerful before, during, and after our deliberations.

The Book of Acts illuminates this thought. Acts 2 reminds us people to gather daily with prayer on the agenda.

In Acts 12, Peter was locked up in jail, but the church gathered in prayer without ceasing. Additionally, Jesus gives us the greatest example of the mindset we must possess when we gather to discuss the direction of the church. On His last days on earth and facing death, Jesus surrendered His will to that of His father: “Father, if it be Thy will, let this cup pass from me. Nevertheless, let Thy will be done.” As the church depended upon fervent prayer and Jesus sought and surrendered to God’s will, let us do the same. I know we cannot preclude certain things from occurring, but it is our due diligence to resist those things from distracting us from our ordained ministry. Indeed, when we are prayerful, we will have a godly response.

So, as we consider our possible participation in the General Conference, let us prepare our mind and spirit. We are mere human beings responsible for the task of making business decisions which have spiritual implications. The future and legacy of the church depends on our willingness to be servants who are committed to seeing the will of God established on earth as in Heaven. We each should be guided by the fundamental question whose answer undergirds our spiritual stewardship: Will the CME Church be better because you are a delegate?

2020 Retrospective: Russell Memorial Leads Souls to the Polls Submitted by Jameria Self

How do you create a great recipe for political activism in a community in the midst of a pandemic, social and political unrest, and economic downturn? As we reflect back on 2020, we can proudly say the following ingredients make all the difference: • A fifth-generation pastor and leader with a steep legacy of social and political activism that has been passed on from his ancestry; and • A church who has served as the launching pad of several homegrown political activists, theologians, and public servants.

This combination resulted in tremendous grassroots efforts that galvanized and inspired a community to not only participate in the political process and social activism but also make an impact in political outcomes, such as the local and national elections. And so was the case with the great, historic Russell Memorial CME Church and their passionate leader, Pastor Jerry L. Christian, Jr. If we examine these two factors more closely, the current pastor, Jerry Christian, Jr., is a fifth-generation preacher. In fact, his lineage of preachers goes all the back to his great-great-great grandfather who was a slave. He was blessed to be able to experience his paternal grandmother, a forthright and outspoken matriarch, lead many congregants to exercise their rights despite having limited rights herself. To date, she is still the person who has influenced him the most in his spiritual walk and his desires to remain politically and socially astute. It is no surprise that he would lead with social activism at the forefront of his ministerial vision.

Now, consider Russell Memorial CME Church, the former St. Matthews CME Church. Over the past century, some of today’s most influential political and spiritual leaders graced the halls of this sanctuary, and young and hungry future leaders were nurtured and cultivated. Among them are the likes of politically savvy individuals like Rev. William Barber II, former President of the North Carolina (NC) NAACP Chapter and Co-Chair of the Poor People’s Campaign; William V. Bell, former mayor of Durham, NC from 2001-2017; and Ben Chavis, Civil Rights Leader and one of the Wilmington Ten wrongly convicted in 1971 and eventually released from prison nearly a decade later.

Since Pastor Christian’s assignment to Russell Memorial, the combination of his legacy and the historic reputation of the church have blended well. 2020 was an unprecedented year, one wrought with a raging pandemic impacting communities of color significantly, economic downturn that forced many businesses to

Submissions close their doors indefinitely, and national and political unrest that spawned protests globally. Despite all these challenges, the following events, led by Pastor Christian and Russell Memorial, motivated the community to participate in the political process more than ever before: • 2020 Voting Rally, Saturday, September 19, 2020, at 12 noon on the premises of Russell Memorial CME Church • Parade of Souls to the Polls, Sunday, November 1, 2020, at 1:30 p.m., leaving from Russell Memorial CME Church and going to the North Carolina Central University voting site The Voting Rally was quite the festive event despite an overcast day and was well-attended by several organizations. This event not only offered early voting registration, but also provided COVID-19 testing and the opportunity for members of the community to complete the 2020 Census. The rally also featured food and fun as local Grill Master James Self served the crowd with delicious goodies while DJ Jeffery Bates provided excellent music and entertainment.

Participating organizations included several fraternities and sororities representing the Divine Nine; Lincoln Community Center; the Durham Chapter of the A. Phillip Randolph Institute; the United States Census 2020; McDougald Terrace Housing Authority; Durham Police Department; members of Russell Memorial; and the Durham community.

Submissions Continued from previous page Considering the presence of a pandemic that was wreaking havoc on communities of color, attendees remained cautious and compliant with North Carolina’s requirements for wearing masks and social distancing.

However, this did not dampen their enthusiasm and fervor. Several attendees donned t-shirts that promoted the message that every vote counts. Also noted were shirts that featured messages promoting social justice and peace.

Finally, just two days ahead of the November 3 elections, Pastor Christian led the Parade of Souls to the Polls. Despite a rough start with a tropical storm and hurricane brewing near the area, the pastor, his family, and several members met in the church parking lot, bearing signs to lead a parade of voters to North Carolina Central University for the final day of early voting.

While 2020 was one of the most challenging and unprecedented times in our history, in one small corner of the world, there was a pastor and a church who decided not to be deterred by the negative circumstances. Instead, they focused on God and empowering the community to exercise their right to vote. And when they reflect on 2020 in the future, they will remember their efforts provided hope for their community and ultimately our nation!

125th Church Anniversary Let Mt. Zion Rejoice!

On Sunday, February 14, 2021, Mt. Zion had the distinct pleasure of hearing the word preached to us by our illustrious bishop, Rt. Rev. James B. Walker, Presiding Prelate of the 7th Episcopal District of the New York Washington Region of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. Bishops’ word came from I Samuel 17:50. “The Battlefield Mindset” was the topic of his most inspiring words. There is something in the mind of Jesus; there is something in the heart.

Pastor Parker was the liturgist. Our theme was, “Staying on the Battlefield for the Lord;" Scripture: Matthew 16:18 The invocation was given by Exhorter Sister Tee Major Curtis, followed by the hymn of praise, “On Christ the Solid Rock”, scripture reading by Rev. Tyrone Fitzgerald, and the reading of the church history, led by Rev. Andrea Marshall and Sis. Nikaylah Davis. We paid homage to our deceased members that answered the call to glory this year with the lighting of a candle dedicated to their lives and work accomplished here at Mt. Zion. The solemn ceremony was led by Bro. Bruce Benson and Rev. Tyrone Fitzgerald. Our music was presented by Rev. Rebecca Collins Rawls. Many of our members joined in the service through Zoom, Facebook and our call-in number.

We would like to extend our thanks to members of the Washington-Virginia District who joined us for our anniversary service, and to our Presiding Elder and his beautiful wife, Rev. Kevin and Sis. Gwen Agee, who also joined us in our celebration. Thanks to Sis. G. Bernice Richardson of St. Paul, Chester; Bro. Ken Thomas, Regional Lay Leader of the New York-Washington Region; Bro. Mike Dixon, Philadelphia District Leader of the Board of Evangelism and Missions; Sis. Sandra Chambers, President of the Missionary Society for the New York-Washington Region; Sis. Portia Rivers, Treasurer of the Philadelphia District Lay Ministry; Rev. Joseph Fairly, Pastor of New Visions CME Church, Newark, New Jersey; and all others that we missed.

Mt. Zion has a rich history in this area and we are proud to be servants of the Lord and the community. Our history includes serving as the local school for primary grades during the 1930’s and 40’s, hosting one of the largest Sunday School populations in the 7th Episcopal District, hosting an early Girl Scout Troop (first black in the county) and producing a General Officer in the CME Church in the person of Rev. Raymond F. Williams who served as General Secretary of Evangelism. Mt. Zion serves the local community with one of the finest food bank ministries in the area. Not only do we distribute quality food, but clothes, small household items and offering meeting space for community involvement. So, as we celebrate our 125th we remain faithful to God and the community ... So, help us Let Mt. Zion Rejoice!

Oak Grove CME Church Celebrates 127th Church Anniversary Submitted by Mrs. Linda Whitlock In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” - Proverbs 3:6 Church Motto: “Where Everybody Is Somebody but The Main Attraction Is Jesus”

Yearly our church celebrates its meaningful history. The celebration allows us opportunities to come together with our church family, friends and neighbors to reflect on the life of the church.

Praising and giving honor to God, acknowledging pastors and church members for their sacrifices, dedication and commitment, as well as acknowledging activities that take place throughout the year. Oak Grove highlights youth and young adults through Sunday School, yearly trips that are both educational and fun, our yearly picnic which allows Christian bonding with family and fun activities for all, and yearly four members known as the Christmas Angels put their money together to create gift baskets to give to the senior citizens in the church. This year they created thirty-one gift baskets which brought warm smiles to those receiving them.

A Church Anniversary allows the celebration of its founders as well as its present members ... family and friends gathering to praise, worship and give God thanks for the journey. It not only allows us to reflect on the past but gives us hope to look to the future. In the past we have served a delicious meal following the worship service, but COVID-19 caused us to use technology and become more creative in our worship services beyond the church walls.

On October 18, 2020, Oak Grove CME celebrated its 127th Church Anniversary via Facebook Live and Teleconference. Presiding Elder Whitlock, Jr. preached our Anniversary Message. His uplifting message was filled with hope and spiritual encouragement, emphasizing that we have come this far by faith and God continues to carry us through.

We have endured many challenges, but because we are grounded and rooted in giving God our best He continues to lead and guide us as a church.

Submissions For our 126th Anniversary, Presiding Elder Clifton Harris of the Durham District in the Seventh Episcopal District delivered an inspiring message of hope to continue our Christian Journey.

As we celebrated our 125th Church Anniversary, we were doubly blessed. Our own Presiding Prelate, Bishop C. James King, Jr., the 63rd Bishop of the Christian Methodist Church, was our special guest preacher and he preached an awesome inspiring message. His subject and text were, “From Maniac to Missionary,” and Mark 5:1-9, 20. Following his message, he conducted the Ritual of Burning Oak Grove’s Mortgage. Oh, what a day to rejoice and give God thanks. Our special guests included Rev. Marcus Mclaurin from the Gloster/ Hattiesburg District and former pastors from the Aberdeen/Tupelo District, Rev. Charles Young, Retired; Rev. Willie Harper (now deceased); Rev. Dr. Cheryl Penson; and Rev. Ida Price, Retired. Other visiting pastors from the district included Rev. Loretta Stafford and Rev. (l-r): Presiding Elder Clifton Harris, Mrs. Dottie Deaneatha & Mrs. Isaac Patterson. Following the morning service, a Twitty Harris, Mrs. Linda K. Whitlock and Presiding Elder/ Pastor Quenton H. Whitlock, Jr. delicious meal was served in the Fellowship Hall.

Below is a brief history of Oak Grove Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Rienzi, Mississippi.

Oak Grove Colored Methodist Episcopal Church land was purchased August 6, 1893. Trustee Willie Louis' name was on the deed. Some of the founding members were: Willie Louis, Dan and Dottie Turner, Ludie Warren, Richard and Manerva Jones, Jim Phillips, Mary Wicks, Alfred and Anna Dilworth, Andrew Grant and Willie Whitmore, and Matt and Manerva Davis.

Oak Grove Church was originally a part of the Rienzi Circuit, which included Back Street CME Church, Danville CME Church, Liberty CME Church and Oak Grove CME Church. When Back Street and Liberty CME Churches folded, the charges became Oak Grove and Danville. Later, each church became independent of the other.

In the early sixties, Rev. A.C. Welch was sent to lead this flock. Although times were extremely hard, we flourished spiritually.

In 1965, Rev. Quenton H. Whitlock, Sr. was appointed to this congregation. He was our shepherd for sixteen years. During his tenure, several renovations were made: the sanctuary was remolded and a fellowship hall and bathrooms were added. The church was bricked thanks to bricks donated in memory of a faithful warrior, Sister Annie Whitmore Walker. The land adjacent to the old church became available for purchase and our trustees saw the need for additional land and purchased it.

Rev. Leo Wright became our shepherd in 1978.

During his six years administration the church was air-conditioned and carpeted thanks to a loan from Steward/Trustee Bro. Willie Lee Johnson. We went from a monthly service to a bi-monthly service. We also purchased tables and chairs for the fellowship hall and went on a church trip to Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Rev. Charles Young became our shepherd in 1984. He led us for one year. Under his leadership, we were introduced us to bulletins, which we were asked to leave on the seat each Sunday so we could use them over and over. He added the Young Adult Class and the Sunday School Banner which is used as an incentive to persuade members to come to Sunday Church School.

Rev. A.C. Welch came to us again in 1985 for another year. Bulletins were printed regularly and we could carry them home. We thanked the Intex Corporation for allowing Trustee/Steward Jessie Leatherwood to make copies for our church.

Rev. Deborah Washington became our shepherd in 1986 and preached the word for one year. She was followed by Rev. W.D. Ratliff in 1987, and he also preached the word for a year.

Rev. Willie Harper became our shepherd in 1988 for three years. We re-carpeted our church and padded our pews.

Rev. Myrtle Clark became our shepherd in 1991. She stayed with us for four years. Under her leadership the dream hit us to build a new facility. We started

Submissions saving our money and saved over $30,000.00 toward this goal. An air-conditioner was added to the fellowship hall. Children’s sermons and the Acolytes were added, and the first church anniversary was held.

Rev. Charles Hodges became our shepherd in 1995 for one year. We experienced an increase in church membership.

Rev. Henry Damons, Sr. became our shepherd in 1996. We became a full-time congregation and the dream of a new church became a reality. The Lord blessed us to build and furnish the new edifice. Supplies were donated

by GBC in Booneville, Mississippi. A computer was donated by FMC Inc. in Saltillo, Mississippi. The Marquee was donated in memory of Mrs. Allula Smith. We went from two choirs to four choirs. Our church anniversary became a yearly event. Under his leadership, Bro. Jessie Leatherwood, Superintendent of Sunday Church School, started giving a $25.00 donation to the class with the highest attendance for a month as an incentive to increase attendance. Also, a television and VCR were purchased; later two new vacuum cleaners were purchased.

Rev. Anitha Keith became our shepherd in 2003. She set up the financial duties of Stewards and Trustees according to The Discipline, and she encouraged the Youth & Young Adults to become involved on the Local and Connectional levels. She also used her Event Planning skills for special occasions.

Rev. Cheryl E. Penson became our shepherd in 2004. She [initiated] the “I Care Academy,” which served any child in the community that wanted the help, “The Food Pantry,” which gave quarterly distributions to the sick and shut-in and was available to anyone who was in need, two (2) workshops for the youth, organized a Health Fair, started the “Prison Ministry,” and helped to write a proposal for the “I Care Academy” to get a computer and printer in the church. Rev. Penson spent many hours visiting the sick and shut in: in the hospital, nursing homes, and at home, and working with people who needed guidance. Under her leadership, the youth took two (2) outings and organized a women’s retreat for women ages 18-100 entitled, “Women of God Taking It to Another Level.”

Rev. Ida Price became our shepherd in 2008. Under her leadership, our Sunday Church School offering increased to over $100.00 each Sunday. We gave out food to people in the community, purchased a new copier, and paid off our mortgage.

Rev. Q. H. Whitlock, Jr., well-trained in the doctrine of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, became our shepherd in July 2018. We held our 125th Church Anniversary/Mortgage Burning on October 21, 2018. In order to transport members to and from church services, conferences, leadership training school, and civic and community events, under his leadership on May 19, 2020, we purchased a church van. He provides spiritual guidance and support for the various ministries of the church. Our church is continuing to thrive both spiritually and financially under Rev. Q. H. Whitlock’s capable leadership. Our services are on Facebook Live and telephone conference call at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday mornings.

This is just a brief account of our growth as God has continually blessed us to stay focused for one hundred and twenty-five years.

In the 23rd chapter of the Gospel of Luke, particularly around the 34th verse, you will find these words: “Father Forgive Them for They Know Not What They Do.” At first glance we think of this as just an ordinary statement, but in retrospect our Savior is asking forgiveness for the Sins of His oppressors. As we reflect on Lent, as well as the current climate in this nation and around the world, let us not merely reflect and atone for our own sins, but let us atone for the sins of others who have done wrong against us and to the moral fabric at large.

We learn from the example of Jesus Christ even after He was taken before Pontius Pilate and Pilate found not fault, but because of the agitation of his oppressors, sent Him to another court where He was publicly tried against a convicted felon. It was also by the same agitation of His oppressors that Christ was sentenced to death and hung on a Cross to die. However, we see the empathy and compassion of Christ on the cross when instead of hating and despising His oppressors, Christ asked God to forgive His persecutors.

Lent 2021 comes to us at a critical time in our nation and the world. I feel, now more than ever, that we must not only ask for individual atonement for our own individual sins, but it is time for us to ask for atonement for the moral sins, not done to us as individuals but done to us as a nation. In the midst of an insurrection that has caused our country great pain, can we find the courage to say Father forgive them? In the midst of a fight where we struggle to understand that all of God’s children matter, can we say Father forgive them for they know not what they do? It is time for us to ask for moral repentance and commend ourselves in this nation to the God who forgives all our iniquities and to the God in whom we put our trust.

A changing landscape for America’s Black farmers February 17, 2021

Land is a precious asset to farmers—and, of course, it is essential to producing crops and raising livestock. Land is also wealth for farmers to pass on to their heirs, and it may make up most or all of a farmer’s estate.

Decisions about the distribution of land at the end of the Civil War were critically important, particularly because most Blacks and a significant number of whites worked as farmers. The U.S. government had promised formerly enslaved people land—as just mentioned, land is essential to growing food to eat and to sell to pay for necessities.

But the government did not honor its pledge. Instead, large plantations were given back to their former owners— secessionist whites—while the people who had been enslaved got nothing. This was not the last time the U.S. government failed Black farmers.

Bread for the World Institute has emphasized the connection between hunger and the U.S. racial wealth gap for several years. The denial of land ownership after the Civil War set the stage for the disproportionate rates of hunger in Black communities today. The median wealth of a typical Black family is 12 cents for every dollar held by a white family, according to recent data.

Wealth means options to invest in the future and break out of the cycle of living paycheck to paycheck. Without wealth, even a small savings account, any loss of family income can lead directly to inability to buy groceries.

More recently, Black farmers continued to be stripped of wealth by being deliberately excluded, through discriminatory policies, from federally secured loans and other government assistance available to white farmers. As recently as the 1990s, they were routinely denied loans for which they qualified or subjected to lengthy processing delays that made it impossible to get their crops planted on time.

A class action lawsuit, Pigford v. Glickman, was finally settled in 2010. The U.S. government made a perfunctory effort to compensate Black farmers who had been subjected to discrimination or their heirs, but many claimants were denied compensation or awarded sums that did not make them whole.

The delays and the inadequate compensation amounts meant that by the time the suit was settled, many had lost their land, livelihood, and legacy.

Now, more than 150 years after the end of the Civil War, the agricultural landscape for Black farmers may be about to change. In 2020, as the 116th Congress was drawing to a close, Sens. Cory Booker (D-NJ), Elizabeth Warren (DMA), and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) introduced the Justice for Black Farmers Act, designed “to address the history of discrimination against Black farmers and ranchers, to require reforms within the Department of Agriculture to prevent future discrimination.”

One of the provisions of the law would help restore the land base that Black farmers lost over centuries of discrimination by providing land grants of up to 160 acres to eligible Black farmers and Black aspiring farmers at no cost to them.

In addition, the act would create a Civil Rights Oversight board in the U.S. Department of Agriculture to prevent further discrimination of the kinds that denied Black farmers access to credit and other forms of assistance, making it impossible for them to farm successfully.

But Booker, Warren, and Gillibrand reintroduced the act in the new 117th Congress. The proposal will also undoubtedly inform the content of the next farm bill. The farm bill is not due to be reauthorized until 2023, but hearings are held well in advance and could begin as early as 2021.

It is rare that a major change in the structure of U.S. farm policy would be made in any legislation, so the three senators may have introduced their bill early to get out in front of the farm bill debate.

The farm bill is always a major focus of Bread for the World’s advocacy, and we also pay attention to legislation that would provide reparations or compensation to Americans who are descended from enslaved people.

Racism is so deeply ingrained in the fabric of U.S. society that no single piece of legislation can respond to all the dimensions of the damage it has caused. But as a way to begin trying to compensate for the theft and denial of Black wealth, the Justice for Black Farmers Act would be a very good place to start.
