As we begin to transition from winter to spring it’s natural to look at 2017 with a sense of accomplishment, while maintaining excitement for the year ahead. The work the Oregon Park District completed in 2017 will serve as the foundation for the future.

The District approved an agency wide comprehensive plan in March of 2017. Through the planning process, the District gathered input from community, staff, Commissioners, and commuAndy Egyed Superintendent of Parks nity stakeholders. The common theme throughout was for OPD andy@oregonpark.org to maintain existing amenities. Utilizing the community’s input, we developed an action plan for the next 5-10 years. Park West is the first park identified within the Board approved plan to complete a park specific master plan. Park West was chosen first based on its classification as a community park, level of service, Andrea Messenger total number of participants who utilize the park and overall Customer Service Representative need for infrastructure upgrades. andrea@oregonpark.org

I am pleased to report staff has continued to gather park specific site information from the community, staff and Commissioners. The Park West Master Plan is slated for approval in March 2018. Proposed upgrades will include playground replacement, shelter enhancements, restroom upgrades, fully accessible routes, parking lot expansion, and much more. A similar plan will be completed in FY 18/19 for Park East and Kiwanis Park. We continuously examine our core offerings and ask, “How can we do better?” Whether its youth sports, preschool, parks, or any number of other services, it’s our challenge and privilege to answer that question. Program surveys are completed, at a minimum, twice per year. The results of these surveys are examined by staff and program changes are implemented to better serve you, the resident. One of the areas recently identified as lacking was a District Inclusion Program. Staff will launch the District Inclusion Program alongside the release of the Spring & Summer Activity Guide. The Inclusion Program will provide year-round opportunities for individuals with special needs to participate in any program offered by the Oregon Park District. See page 19 for more information. District staff and Commissioners attended the Illinois Park and Recreation Association and Illinois Association of Park Districts Soaring to New Heights conference in January. Each year this conference serves as an opportunity to participate in educational programming, networking and professional development. This year’s conference was special as the Oregon Park District District was recognized statewide. Commissioner Dan Engelkes was recognized by the Illinois Association of Park Districts as their Rising Star Award recipient for his outstanding efforts as a Commissioner with less than 6 years of service. Fairground Park received the Outstanding Park Award. The award is presented to an agency for exceptional and unique achievements in design and development. And lastly, the District received the designation as an Exceptional Workplace. The Exceptional Workplace Award is administered by IPRA and recognizes agencies that show a commitment to the well-being of their employees. The programs, parks, services and facilities we provide represent a combination of community interests, values and attitudes towards an improved quality of life. I invite you to stay tuned to see where we will go, together, over the coming years.

The Oregon Park District offers a sibling discount of 10% off the regular fee for each additional child enrolled in a program where one child has already enrolled at full price in the same session. Registration for all siblings must take place at Nash or by phone at the same time in order to receive the discount. All family members must be in the same account to qualify.

Registration Begins February 15 ANNUAL PASS HOLDERS

Annual pass holders will be allowed to register on Wednesday, February 14. Resident annual pass holders will begin registration at 7:00 am and non-resident annual pass holders will follow at 9:00 am. Registration on February 14 can only be submitted by members of your immediate family.

NON-ANNUAL PASS HOLDERS

Registration for non-annual pass holders will begin on Thursday, February 15. Residents will begin at 7:00 am, followed by non-residents at 9:00 am.

RESIDENCY

ID is required for proof of residency or a nonresident fee will be charged. A resident is an individual living in or owning real estate within the boundaries of the Oregon Park District. All Oregon School District students participating in youth team sports are considered residents.

FEES

Fees must be paid at the time of registration by cash, check, or credit card. The first fee listed is the rate for Oregon Park District residents. The second fee is for non-residents. No registrations or rentals will be accepted without the proper payment.

CLASS CHANGES

The Oregon Park District may cancel, postpone, combine classes, or change instructors. Classes may be cancelled due to insufficient enrollment and refunds will be issued. All participants will be notified of any scheduling changes or cancellations.

WAIVER POLICY

The Oregon Park District requires all class participants and pass holders to sign a waiver release form. Waivers will be signed and kept on file at Nash Recreation Center. Your registration is not considered complete until a signed waiver is on file.

PROGRAM REFUND POLICY * Full refund will be issued if the Park District reschedules/cancels a class. * To withdraw from a program, a refund application must be completed. * An administrative fee of $5.00 shall be deducted from the amount of a refund to offset the cost of processing the refund. A full refund, less the fee, will be granted if the application for refund is filed with the office at least ten days prior to the scheduled start of the program/activity. * Refunds will not be granted after the registration deadline. * All program refunds are subject to the program coordinator’s approval. * Refunds will not be approved on Park District passes. * Passes/cards are non-transferable.

Mail-in Registration – Send your payment and signed registration form to Oregon Park District, P.O. Box 237, Oregon, IL, 61061. Please remember to include a check or Visa/MasterCard/Discover number and expiration date. The Park District is not responsible for mail-in registrations not received.

Fax-in Registration – Fax a signed registration form to (815)732-3736. Please remember to include a Visa/ MasterCard/Discover number and expiration date. Fax registrations will be accepted starting Friday, February 16, at 9:00 am.

A Nash Recreation Center pass or daily fee allows patrons to use the pool and whirlpool, gym, and Fitness Center.

RAQUETBALL & WALLYBALL

Racquetball court rental is included in the annual pass fee and is $3.00/hour for non-annual pass holders. Wallyball court rental is $5.00/hour.

NASH FITNESS CENTER

The Nash Fitness Center is over 6,000 square feet and features a three lane rubberized track that surrounds our CYBEX strength training machines, free weights, and cardiovascular equipment. Our friendly Fitness Center staff is available to set up an orientation for any and all users looking to begin a fitness routine.

GROUP RESERVATIONS

Groups of 15 or more will receive a 10% discount on daily fees if reservations are made at least 10 days in advance. Contact the Oregon Park District for reservation information.

LOCKERS

The Oregon Park District has lockers available for rental to annual pass holders for the term of the pass. The cost is $65 for residents and $80 for non-residents.

MT. MORRIS VILLAGE RESIDENTS

Mt. Morris Village residents can register for all programs, memberships, facility rentals and daily fees at the Oregon Park District resident rate. Additional non-resident fees are subsidized by the Village of Mt. Morris.

AUTOMATIC MONTHLY PAYMENT

This is a convenient way to pay for your pass and select programs. The automatic debit monthly fees are shown above. With your permission, automatic credit card charges will be made each month. The first amount is the initial payment that will be made when registering, followed by the amount of 10 equal payments to be charged on the 15th of each month.

3 PAY PAYMENT PLAN

Your annual pass is paid off in three equal consecutive payments! The pass fee is paid on the 15th of month, for the first three months, and is only available on annual passes.

AGE RESTRICTIONS

Children under the age of 5 are welcome to use the gym and pool area free of charge. Anyone 3rd grade or younger must be accompanied by a parent or responsible person, Junior High aged or older in the facility. Participants must be 7th grade or older to use the Nash Fitness Center and 9th grade or older to use the free weights.

SILVER SNEAKERS

The Oregon Park District is an approved SilverSneakers location. If you are unsure if you are a member or do not have a membership ID, the front counter staff at Nash can assist in determining your eligibility.

The Nash pool features stairs to a 3 foot bay area attached to a 25 meter 6 lane pool. The deepest area is 10 feet. The pool is equipped with a handicap chair lift to assist patrons in and out of the pool. After your workout you can enjoy the 13 person hot tub with both high and low jets. Six lap lanes will be available for swimmers 7th grade or older. Swimming 32 laps is a one mile workout.

OPEN SWIM

All areas of the pool are open for use, including our diving board and basketball hoop. Pool toys are allowed in the pool at the discretion of the aquatic staff.

MULTI-USE SWIM

Multi-Use Swim is open to all ages, however, children are to be accompanied by an adult. Patrons may swim laps, play in the bay area, water jog in the deep end, or enjoy time in the hot tub. Swim lessons are scheduled during this time and will have first priority for pool use. Please be aware that areas of the pool may not be available.

HOT TUB HOURS

The hot tub is available for use during Lap Swim, Open Swim, and Multi-Use Swim. The hot tub can also be used during swim lessons, Water Aerobics, and Twinges classes. You must be at least 16 years old to use the hot tub. The hot tub is equipped with a handicap chair lift to assist patrons in and out of the hot tub.

SWIM REGISTRATION DATES:

The focus of Starbabies is to help very young children become comfortable in the water while also teaching the parent or caregiver the importance of water safety. This class does not teach the child how to become an accomplished swimmer or to survive in the water. One parent or caregiver must be in the water with each child. NEW CLASS!!! STROKE SCHOOL PRACTICE

Stroke School Practice is for any student that has taken at least one session of level 4 or higher. Students will be focusing on increasing speed and distance of their swimming. Students will work on any of the 4 competitive strokes, racing dives, competitive swimming terms, open turns and flip turns. Stroke School Practice doesn’t replace levels 4-6, but offers another option. Breaststroke and butterfly will not be introduced in Stroke School Practice, however students level 5 and higher that have learned those strokes will be able to use them. Fee: $53/ $64 NR

ANGELFISH PROGRAM Does your little swimmer have a disability or special needs? Talk to Jena about our AngelFish program. PRIVATE SWIM LESSONS - AGES 3 YEARS & UP

Private lessons are 30 minutes of one-on-one instruction. Students may choose to focus on specific skills or work on all skills required to pass a swimming level.

ADULT PRIVATE SWIM LESSONS

Are you afraid of the water or never learned to swim? Does this describe you? It is never to late to learn to swim! Our instructor will work with you one-on-one for 30 minutes to help you enjoy the water and learn desired skills. Both private youth and adult swim lessons are scheduled by the Aquatics Coordinator, Jena Wehmhoefer, jena@oregonpark.org or (815) 732-3101. The number of lessons is up to you.

On Wednesday, June 13th, we will be heading to the Oregon Park District Community Garden, South 10th Street in Oregon, where we will learn about planting in garden plots from Tyler Hagemann, the horticulture supervisor for the Park District.

We will also pick vegetables and enjoy samples. Later in the summer, families are invited to help themselves to our crop from our labelled plots! On Friday, June 15th, we will pack up and head to Mighty Vine, 222 Centerpoint Drive in Rochelle. We will go on a tour in our lab coats, hair nets, and booties! We will also have samples to taste and samples to take home! Children should be dropped off at the Children’s Center at 9 am each day and picked up at the Children’s Center at 11 am each day. The children will be transported to our destination each day by the Children’s Center staff in the Park District van. On our first day of camp permission slips for the transportation for the week will need to be signed. Please leave a car seat/booster seat at the front desk at the Park District for your child on each of the three days. Dress your child for the weather, but the children do need to wear gym shoes or appropriate shoes/boots for being in a garden or field. Oregon Park District Inclusion Program

HE Oregon Park District is excited to announce our Inclusion Program is officially kicking off in February 2018. Inclusion within the Oregon Park District means individuals with special needs are blended into the same recreation programs and activities as their peers. The Oregon Park District will work with you to provide reasonable accommodations to enable the participant’s successful involvement in a program. The Oregon Park District has always made accommodations for individuals with special needs participating in our programs, but is excited to kick off our official Inclusion Program for our patrons. Using our past experiences, we have taken the time to create internal procedures to include a chain of command and training by Ogle County Educational Cooperative for our staff. This will allow staff to be better equipped to work alongside a wide array of individuals with special needs allowing a better experience in our programs. In 2017, the Oregon Park District took a more conscious approach to accommodate these needs in two of our programs. The swimming lesson program implemented the Angelfish program through the Starfish Aquatics Institute. Instructors completed and were certified through additional courses. The aquatics department successfully accommodated five swimmers into group lessons this past year and had several returning for multiple sessions. In the summer, Camp Oh-Pea-Dee served an additional five campers with the accommodation of a companion. In 2017, Katie Shea, a camp parent, had a child in Camp Oh-Pea-Dee with special needs. Below she shares some thoughts on her experiences. “My son loved Camp Oh-Pea-Dee. Having a place to play and interact with peers made a big difference in his summer. Our whole family benefitted from the experience. I don’t know what we would have done without it. I know

that it is not always easy to be inclusive, but I believe that all children benefit from being exposed to others with differing abilities. We were so pleased to hear reports from his companion that other children asked about him and missed him when he wasn’t there. You can imagine how great this made us feel. Thank you so much for your willingness to work with us! Until I became a parent of a child with special needs, I never considered the challenges of finding childcare and social activities. It is hard. There really isn’t an understanding of the widespread benefits of inclusion for all kids. It’s not just about childcare. It’s about friends and interacting with the community. I know these are not easy issues and my beliefs about inclusion have certainly not always been as strong as they are now. I just want to assure you again this is valuable work that you are doing making inclusion a priority. Perhaps your program could serve as a model for others someday. There is such a great need.” The Oregon Park District provides year-round programs for patrons with and without disabilities that focus on skill development, independence, socialization, sense of enjoyment and self-awareness. Inclusion services are offered to create an opportunity for people with special needs to participate in the least restrictive environment and be included in all Park District programs. Inclusion allows the participant to participate in any Park District program with the support of an inclusion companion or other accommodations. Through a comprehensive approach, the Oregon Park District is confident that we can better serve individuals with special needs in any of our Park District programs. At the time of registration, the participant or guardian simply checks the box indicating a need for a special accommodation. An employee will then contact the participant or guardian to discuss further details to provide the best choice to allow the individual to be successful. We will have two different release times and will have Open Swim to follow immediately after both hunts. Independent swimmers (at least 5 years old and able to swim independently without a life jacket) will start promptly at 7 pm. For the safety of the swimmers, BAGS WILL NOT BE PERMITTED. BUILD A BIRDHOUSE CONTEST ALL AGES

If you enjoy birds, woodworking, friendly competition and need a fun winter project, this contest is for you! Design your own birdhouse or create one from an existing pattern.
