LITERARY TIMES!

Camp Oh-Pea-Dee is designed for students entering kindergarten through those entering sixth grade. This summer the theme is Literary Times, and we will be exploring the themes from different book series (familiarity with series is not required). TuesdaysThursdays will feature planned, fun activities and field trips around the weekly theme. Mondays and Fridays can be added on. Time each week will also be spent at Nash swimming, visiting our many parks, and the splash pad. Camp will run from 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM each day. Check OPD’s website for payment plan information.

6/27: Marble Runs Our summer of STEM continues with marble runs. We will use various materials to make and test runs for marbles. This day promises to be runaway fun!

Summer STEM Series

6/8: Boats Our Summer of STEM begins with boat making. We will talk about what makes boats float and look at a variety of boat designs. Then, participants will have the chance to use a variety of supplies to make their own boats. A test pond will be set up to test designs for buoyancy. The hour will conclude with a float in the fountain to see whose boats float the longest. Join us for this buoyant STEM event.

6/12: Water Our summer of STEM continues with a wet and wild experience. We will be meeting at LOMC which is located at 1834 S. Illinois Route 2. The Pond is home to animals of all sizes and we hope to catch a glimpse of some of them. After a hike around the pond to check for animals and habitats, older campers will have the opportunity to actually dip into the water to find some macro-invertebrates while younger campers will learn more about the water cycle.

6/22: Birds Our Summer STEM series continues with a high flying event in Park East. We will meet at the shelter on the river side of the park and talk about all things birds. We will use tools to simulate bird beaks, do some bird watching and make feeders to take home.

7/17: Catapults Our summer of STEM continues with catapults. We will discuss the uses of catapults throughout the ages. Next, everyone will have the opportunity to use a variety of materials to make and test their very own catapults. Finally, we will have a contest to see whose catapult can shoot the farthest.

7/27: Lego Coding Our summer of STEM continues with coding a LEGO maze. Children will begin to learn the basics of coding while using printable materials and instruction cards. Children will learn to estimate the perspective of something else and build a beginning understanding of computer command codes, sequence and looping.

8/7: Root Beer Float Day Our Summer Stem series concludes with a sweet event. National Root Beer Float Day is August 6, but we’re going to celebrate on August 7! Join us for this hour long program where we will taste test 8 root beers. Then, we will discuss states of matter while making ice cream in a bag. Finally, we will create root beer floats with our ice cream. What a sweet way to end our Summer STEM Series!

Let your little gourmet join Ms. Teresa for a fun culinary experience in the kitchen at Nash. The class is designed to introduce each participant to the basics of the kitchen in a creative environment. Delicious creations will be created in class and brought home. Recipes will change each month, but will always include a main dish, side and dessert. Cost includes one meal large enough to feed a family of 4. Two children can work on the same meal for the family. Just preheat the oven and dinner is done. All supplies will be provided.

Do you have a budding chef in your house looking to learn a new recipe? Mini pizza pies are a great favorite for all ages. Children 9 and older can join Lynn Kaufman of Lynnie’s Kitchen to make to mini 8-inch pizzas from scratch. Perfect to share with everyone at home! Choice of cheese, pepperoni, or one of each. Participants will need to bring a few supplies from home for class. Parents will receive a full list by email after registration closes.

Grandparents Day

Celebrate National Grandparents Day with a unique experience at Nash. We will host an evening of fun geared towards grandchildren and their grandparents. Enjoy a pizza dinner along with games and activities—including Bingo! Everyone in attendance must be registered. Children 3 years and under are free.

Join us on Mondays in June and July at The Reading Nook across from Nash Recreation Center for Lemonade in the Shade & Flamingo Bingo. This is a fun program for all ages and affordable. We will play 5 games with multiple winners. Cards sold in 5 packs for $3. Play 1 or as many as you’d like each game. Quench your thirst with our free lemonade! Bring your daubers or use one of ours. Winners can choose a gift from the prize table! Income from this Activity benefits the Oregon Park District Youth Scholarship Fund.
