Tour of {Dog} Homes An Event Celebrating Architecture and Helping My Furry Friends and Me! In late summer, my tail couldn’t stop wagging as we gathered to admire the talent of seven custom home builders from the Discovery West Builders Guild. But these weren’t your regular homes for humans (nope), rather seven incredible homes designed just for dogs like me, each inspired by the architectural styles in Discovery West. This event wasn’t just about beautiful dog houses; it was a chance to help change my world. The Humane Society of Central Oregon, in partnership with Discovery West, held an online auction in July where my human friends could bid on these one-of-a-kind dog homes. All auction proceeds went on to support the Humane Society’s mission of taking care of animals like me! A big, slobbery thank you to the talented Guild Builders and everyone who attended the Tour of {Dog} Homes. Your passion for both dogs and architecture made it a barking success! Featured Builder: Mike Wilkins of Wilkins Construction How did you get started in this industry? My introduction to this industry stemmed from my father’s occupation as a building contractor. Consequently, I was immersed in the trade from a young age. Afterward, I ventured into the commercial fishing industry, where I spent 20 years. However, I eventually returned to the building profession, earning my license over two decades ago. My journey led me to Bend in 2004, and I obtained my license in California in 2001 before securing my Oregon license in 2005. Since then, I’ve been dedicated to this field. What interested you in being part of the Builders Guild in the neighborhood? I specialized in interior finish work for several years, completing projects for builders such as Dennis Szigeti and Gary Laursen. This allowed me to establish connections with partners of West Bend Property Company, the developer of NorthWest Crossing. When the Discovery West development was launched by the same team, I applied to become a Guild Builder. The Discovery West team welcomed me into the Guild, which presented a great opportunity. How do you approach the homes you build in the neighborhood? I currently have six projects in Discovery West, and my approach remains relatively consistent, whether it’s a custom or spec project. I often approach spec projects as if I were building a home for myself, ensuring
the same level of care and attention to detail. I treat each project as one I deeply care about, wanting that passion to resonate with potential buyers. What key changes have you witnessed during your tenure in the building space over the past few years? The architectural landscape in Bend has seen a notable shift over the past two decades. Twenty years ago, craftsman-style homes were all the rage. Nowadays, there’s a clear inclination towards more modern and mid-century modern designs. People have become increasingly conscious of energy efficiency in homes, leading to the incorporation of tankless water heaters, ductless mini-splits for heating and cooling, and a growing interest in solar energy. In my projects, I use real wood flooring and cabinetry; both are timeless and sustainable choices that resonate with discerning buyers. Emphasizing the use of sustainable, renewable products is something I take pride in. Why do you think Discovery West is so popular with homebuyers? Discovery West has effectively adopted a successful model inspired by NorthWest Crossing. If a neighborhood look is desirable and functions well, there’s no need to stray away from that set pattern. Feedback from clients and friends I’ve introduced to the neighborhood indicates that they appreciate the diversity of architectural designs and the sense of community the neighborhood brings. Moreover, approved builders within the community ensure a consistent quality that sets it apart.

Women of Discovery
The Woman Who Illuminated the Cosmos and Inspires Generations NW Leavitt Lane in Discovery West is one of 19 streets named for our 19 Women of Discovery, and Henrietta Swan Leavitt’s discoveries are as vast as space itself. We honor Leavitt’s dedication and relentless focus on helping us understand the cosmos and inspiring generations of astronomers who came after her. Born in 1868, Leavitt was an American astronomer who reshaped our understanding of the universe. Leavitt was reserved, often quiet and seen as serious-minded by her colleagues. She overcame personal challenges, including hearing loss, to make profound contributions to astronomy. Leavitt’s academic journey led her to Radcliffe College, where she graduated in 1892. She joined the Harvard College Observatory as a volunteer in 1895 as one of the “Harvard Computers,” a team of women working as skilled processors of astronomical data. Leavitt joined the staff of Harvard in 1905. At the end of her life, she had risen to be named the head of stellar photometry. Her most significant achievement came in 1912 when she identified a class of variable stars called Cepheid variables. This discovery was a breakthrough for astronomy, providing a reliable method for measuring interstellar distances.

Henrietta Leavitt’s legacy extends far beyond her lifetime. Her work became a crucial tool for future astronomers, notably Edwin Hubble, who used it to confirm the universe’s expansion. Her memberships in prestigious organizations and the naming of Asteroid 5383 Leavitt in her honor are a testament to her contributions. In September, with support from Discovery West, the local Ellipse Theater Community produced “Silent Sky,” a dramatic, inspiring play based on Henrietta’s passion for astronomy. Discovery West continually finds ways to support the Women of Discovery that make our community what it is today. Henrietta’s life and work continue to inspire and empower aspiring scientists, particularly women, to pursue their passions and make their mark on the vast canvas of the universe.
