Dog-Friendly Hiking Guide
Exploring Bend with your furry friend? I’m Skipper, Discovery West’s spokesdog, here to share my top spots for Bend’s most pawsome nearby summer hikes.
My map below highlights close-by dog-friendly hiking trails, ensuring you and your pups can enjoy hiking adventures together. Whether trekking through forest trails or exploring open landscapes, I love living in Bend because it’s filled with scenic spots that welcome four-legged visitors like me!
To keep your pup safe and happy in the summer heat, don’t forget:
• Hydration – carry water for both yourself and your dog.
• Leashes – check leash laws as posted or visit dogpac.org (please note: of the trails on this map, only Good Dog and Badlands have offleash areas)
• Pet Bags – please pick up after your pet and dispose of waste bags in designated containers. Let’s keep our trails clean—no one enjoys seeing discarded baggies along the path.
Serene Summer Spot: The Discovery Park Labyrinth
Tucked just off the Discovery Park Park Trail, west of the murals under Skyline Ranch Road, the new Discovery Park Labyrinth is a hidden gem that blends art, nature, and reflection. This unique installation invites trail-goers to pause, explore, and connect—with themselves and the landscape around them.
Designed to be both thoughtful and accessible, the labyrinth features extrawide paths for wheelchairs and strollers, lined with mossy Oregon boulders. At its heart sits a striking 400-pound moss-covered stone—a perfect perch to pause and take it all in.
Created in partnership with Bend Park and Recreation District, and funded by the Bend Sustainability Fund, the labyrinth was brought to life by artists Lea Goode-Harris and Marilyn Larson of Creative Labyrinths and built by Botanical Developments. It’s a peaceful, artful space that reflects the spirit of Discovery West.
An interactive kiosk at the entrance features a tactile “finger labyrinth” for guests with visual or mobility impairments, and a QR code links to an audio tour with insights into the labyrinth’s design, purpose, and connection to the natural world.

Summer Skincare Tips from Bluebird Skin Therapy + Aesthetics
As summer gets underway, we all know how much we welcome the sun. At the same time, protecting our skin from harmful rays becomes more important than ever. We’ve turned to our resident skin expert, Julie Natoli, owner of one of our newest businesses at Discovery Corner, Bluebird Skin Therapy + Aesthetics, for her top summer skin suggestions.
Protecting your skin starts with wearing sunscreen every single day—especially here in Central Oregon, where the sun is intense year-round. Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, and reapply every two hours, especially if you’re spending time outdoors, hiking, or enjoying our beautiful rivers and lakes. If you’re active, look for sweat- or waterresistant formulas.
Don’t forget those often-missed spots! Be sure to apply sunscreen to your lips, ears, chest, and the sides and back of your neck.
There are two main types of sunscreen: physical and chemical.
• Physical (or mineral) sunscreens are our top recommendation for safety and effective protection. These contain zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide, and work by physically blocking UV rays.
• Chemical sunscreens contain other active ingredients that absorb UV rays and convert them through a chemical reaction.
Our favorite facial sunscreens are Alastin’s HydraTint and SilkShield, available at our Discovery Corner location. We also carry great SPF options for lips, including glosses and chapsticks.
For body protection, we like over-the-counter brands such as CeraVe and Neutrogena. Lastly, don’t underestimate the power of sun-protective clothing. Choose wide-brimmed hats (at least 6 inches), sunglasses, and long-sleeved UPF-rated shirts to add an extra layer of defense. Cover up, hit the trails, and have fun!
Discovery West Summer Events Calendar:
• Food Cart Fridays – Bring family and friends for delicious eats from family-friendly food vendors at Discovery Corner. Enjoy live local music as you gather with neighbors around the firepit at the plaza. When: the last Friday of each month all summer – June 27, July 25, August 29, September 26
• Tour of Homes – Discovery West will have several homes on the Central Oregon Builders Association Tour of Homes, July 11-13 & 18-20. Plan to stop by for a visit!
• PorchFest – This Discovery West inaugural neighborhood celebration will feature live music, community connections, and great food! A variety of musical genres will be offered at 3 locations in the neighborhood throughout the afternoon, culminating in the early evening at Discovery Corner with a special headliner. When: Saturday, September 13.
