Welcome to the 2025 OMEA All-State Concerts

Dear families, educators, and music-lovers, We are thrilled to gather here to celebrate the extraordinary talent and dedication of young musicians in Oregon This event showcases not only their hard work and passion, but also the vital role that music education plays in fostering creativity, collaboration, and personal growth

As you listen to these incredible performances, I encourage you to reflect on the journey that brought each student to this stage. Their commitment to excellence is a testament to the supportive teachers, families, districts, and communities that inspire and nurture their musical endeavors

The OMEA board believes that every student in Oregon deserves access to high-quality music education and to the tools that allow them to thrive in music classrooms As the supporters of these young musicians, your voice is a vital and crucial part of advocating for our music programs across the state While this mountaintop experience is fresh in your mind, consider sending a letter to your school board, superintendent, and your state representatives in Salem encouraging them to support quality music programs in every region of Oregon It is our mission to ensure that every young person, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to explore and excel in music, enriching their educational experience and deepening their connections to their community and to the world. Erika Lockwood, OMEA President

Erika Lockwood has been teaching singers from preschool through 12th grade since 2002, becoming the Director of Choirs at Rex Putnam High School in 2011 Under her direction, the choirs have been awarded numerous Gold Awards by the Oregon ACDA in addition to top placings in league and state festivals (OSAA 5A Champions, 2014 and 2022) Ms Lockwood is a state certified choral adjudicator and has served on the board of the Oregon chapter of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) She is currently serving as President of the Oregon Music Education Association (OMEA)

Ms Lockwood holds a Master of Education as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Music with High Honor from Portland State University She serves as a mentor to teacher candidates as well as new music teachers in her area She is passionate about equity, inclusion, and connection in the music classroom

She lives in Milwaukie with her husband and two children - all musicians - and enjoys running, yoga, baking, and spending time on the water

Cole Haole-Valenzuela, OMEA President-Elect

Cole Haole-Valenzuela was raised in Salem, Oregon, where he was heavily involved in various Salem-Keizer performing arts programs He graduated from Sprague High School and attended Oregon State University, in which he earned a Bachelor in Music Education and a Music Education Master of Art in Teaching While serving on various NFHS, OSAA, and OMEA boards as a music representative, Cole has consistently strived to amplify student voices and guide discussions toward decisions that prioritize what is best for kids He has been presented the Emerging Conductor Award from Oregon ACDA in 2019, the Outstanding Early Career Music Educator Award from OMEA, the NFHS Outstanding Music Educator Award in 2023, as well as the Oregon Symphony Music Educator of the Year award in 2024 Cole is currently the Director of Choirs at West Salem High School, where his ensembles have performed state-wide and on tour

Kelly Moore, OMEA 2nd Vice President

Kelly Moore is the Director of Bands at Ridgeview High School in Redmond, OR She has her B M E and her M M E from the University of Oregon Kelly is the current OMEA 2nd Vice President, the OBDA Central Oregon Regional Representative, and the OMEA District 05 Membership Chair In her district, she organizes and hosts district honor band, Solo and Ensemble Festival, as well as the Middle and High School district band festivals

A native Central Oregonian who has returned to teach in her hometown, Kelly has taught 10 of her 11 years in the Redmond School district. She taught five years of band

and choir at Obsidian Middle School and is in her fifth year of teaching band, drumline, and jazz at Ridgeview High School. During that time, she built the programs to record numbers, started a middle school choir program, a high school drumline, and has demonstrated her musical excellence at the state band and jazz band contests.

Kelly teaches privately and performs in Central Oregon on Flute and Alto Saxophone, is on staff with the Oregon Ambassadors of Music, and Co-Managed the All-State Wind Ensemble for the 2021 Oregon Conference

Ben Lawson, OMEA Past President

Ben Lawson is the Band and Choir Director at Redmond High School in Redmond, Oregon Ben holds a BA in Instrumental Conducting and a MAT in Music Education from Oregon State University. Since his first year teaching he has been an active member of the Oregon Music Education Association, serving as chairs for over 25 festivals at the district level, two years on the State Executive board as 2nd Vice President and Conference Chair of the 2011 conference He has served four years as the All-State Jazz Band Manager and eight years as the All-NW Band Manager Currently Ben is the President of the Oregon Music Education Association, and Past-President of the Oregon Band Directors Association.He is a certified OBDA/OSAA band adjudicator and is on staff with the Oregon Ambassadors of Music

Elizabeth Soper, OMEA Conference Chair

Elizabeth Soper is a dedicated music educator who serves as the Oregon Music Educators Association (OMEA) Conference Chair

With a Master’s in Education from Capella University, Elizabeth is the Choral Director at South Medford High School She graduated summa cum laude from the University of Oregon, holding degrees in Music Education and Music Performance (Flute), along with a minor in Nonprofit Management, which showcases her commitment to a holistic education Elizabeth’s fervent dedication to expanding musical opportunities resonates within her community and across the state, encompassing public schools and local nonprofits. Notably, she’s been the collegiate volunteer coordinator and transportation manager for the 2020, 2022, and 2023 OMEA Conferences, demonstrating her organizational expertise and dedication to fostering meaningful learning experiences within music education

Kristi Stingle, OMEA All-State Chair

Kristi Stingle is the Orchestra director at Lakeridge Middle and Senior High Schools in Lake Oswego, where she has taught since 2016. Kristi enjoys being an active member of OMEA, and served as the 2nd Vice President from 2019-2021 and as HS All-State Orchestra Manager since 2018 She also chaired the Wisconsin

High School State Honors Music Project (WMEA All-State) from 2012 to 2015, and was the High School Orchestra Coordinator and String Bass coach from 2006 to 2010 A graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Stingle has been teaching since 2001 and has been honored by the Civic Music Association of Milwaukee, WI in 2005 for Excellence in Teaching, and was Neenah High School’s Teacher of the Year in 2016

Laura Arthur, OMEA Public Policy Chair

Laura Arthur has served as a passionate music educator and advocate for the past 20+ years She is currently a substitute educator, clinician, and sectional coach in music classrooms across the Portland Metro area

From 2019-2024, Laura Arthur served as the K-12 Music Teacher On Special Assignment (TOSA) for Portland Public Schools in Portland, Oregon In her TOSA role, she supported all music programs at the district level through arts advocacy, creating and delivering professional development, curating curriculum, coordinating events, and instructional coaching Before becoming a part of the PPS Visual & Performing Arts team, she ran a successful middle school music program for 12 years, directing concert and jazz band ensembles along with teaching orchestra, guitar, percussion, and general music classes

Laura serves on the Oregon Music Education Association Executive Board as the Public Policy Chair, where she coordinates and leads action related to advocacy with stakeholders on behalf of OMEA She has presented at local, state, and national conferences around beginning band pedagogy, literature selection, and arts advocacy She regularly performs on bass clarinet and bari sax, and is a graduate of the University of Oregon (B Mus, Music Education) and Portland State University (M Ed)

Laura is a steadfast advocate for equity, and believes that a comprehensive and high-quality music education can, and should, be accessible to ALL students Outside of music and education, she enjoys spending time with her family, playing softball, baking, comics, and trivia

Todd Zimbelman, OMEA Treasurer

Todd Zimbelman is the Executive Officer and Band Director for Oregon Ambassadors of Music He also holds the position of Director of Bands and Co-Director of the Symphony Orchestra at West Salem High School in the Salem-Keizer School District (OR) Mr Zimbelman has held Director of Bands and Associate Director of Bands positions at the high school and college levels in Oregon and Texas He holds bachelor and master of music degrees from the University of Oregon

The West Salem Wind Ensemble has performed at several national and international music festivals and conferences Some highlights include the Oregon Music Education Association State Conference, NAfME Northwest Convention, Western International Band Clinic, and the Pacific Basin International Music Festival in Honolulu, HI. The West Salem Wind Ensemble has placed 1st in the OSAA State Band Contest several times Jazz Bands and Marching Band have also placed among the top in their divisions Students under his direction are regularly selected for honor bands at All-City, All-State, All-Northwest, and the state OMEA Chamber Ensemble and OSAA State Solo contests

Arrangements and compositions by Mr Zimbelman have been performed internationally His Winds Technique Books I and II are used by several programs across the United States. He is an active adjudicator and clinician. He is a member of the American Bandmasters Association, College Band Directors National Association, National Association for Music Educators, National Band Association, Oregon Band Director’s Association, Oregon Music Education Association, and Phi Beta Mu Mr Zimbelman is currently the Treasurer of the Oregon Music Education Association

Cynthia Navarro, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Chair

Cynthia Navarro is in her 9th year as the director of bands at Clear Creek Middle School in Gresham, Oregon Cynthia attended Azusa Pacific University in California where she earned a Bachelor of Music in Bass Trombone Performance Once in Oregon, she earned a Masters in Education at Portland State University and an Equity Certificate for School Leaders from Lewis & Clark University In addition to serving as director of bands, Cynthia also serves her school as a member of the equity team and as advisor for the student racial affinity group, Beauty of Color. For the past few years, Cynthia has led district wide training centered on interrupting racism in the classroom Through these positions, she strives to help dismantle structures in the education system that work against BIPOC bit by bit so that ALL of BIPOC students and teachers are seen, heard, and supported

Amanda Sarles, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Chair

Amanda Sarles teaches Elementary Music at Siuslaw Elementary School in Florence, Oregon Amanda was born and raised in Music City USA, Nashville, Tennessee and earned her Bachelor of Music from Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music In 2009, she began teaching at the International School of Kabul in Kabul, Afghanistan, and in 2011 her fellow teachers voted her ISK Teacher of the Year She then moved to Kampala and taught Elementary music at the International School of Uganda In 2018 she received a Master of Music Education from the University of Oregon’s School of Music and Dance During her graduate studies, Amanda was introduced to

the Eugene Symphony’s Link Up Youth Concerts Her involvement with the Link Up Program gave her the opportunity to speak on a panel at the 2023 National Link Up Convening at Carnegie Hall She is in her 7th year of teaching Elementary music at Siuslaw, and in 2020 was awarded the Oregon PTA Teacher of the Year Award In 2024 she was awarded the OMEA Excellence in Elementary Music Education Award Her investment in educational equity began from her own school experiences and has continued through local and regional work with the Western Regional Educator Network (WREN) She is the OMEA Equity Co-Chair and District 7 Vice-Chair

Jennifer Bell, Band Chair

Jennifer Bell is the Director of Bands at Whiteaker Middle School She is in her twenty-second year of teaching She has spent the last five years at Whiteaker Middle School enjoying the process of starting students on instruments and watching them grow and develop into budding musicians as she did in her first 12 years of teaching at Claggett Creek Middle School Prior to her return to middle school, she spent 7 years at McNary High School where she led the program to place in the top 5 at the OSAA State Championships for five of those years Throughout her career several of her students placed in the State Solo Championships and the State Ensemble Championships

Jennifer graduated from the University of Oregon in 2001 with a Bachelor of Music Education and a master’s degree in Music Education in 2006 She has been nominated for Music Educator of the Year by the Oregon Symphony Association in Salem in 2005, 2006, and 2008 and 2014 She is a member of Phi Beta Mu International Band Director Honorary Fraternity, OBDA, OMEA and NAfME She is the President of the Oregon Band Directors Association and works diligently as a member of OBDA Adjudication Committee. Her contribution to her profession consists of teaching multiple student teachers, organizing her districts solo and ensemble completions and all city honor bands, 5 years of transportation manager for the All-State Honor Ensembles as well as All-State Ensemble Manager She is a sought after middle and high school honor band conductor as well as an adjudicator for multiple area competitions. She has three children and has enjoyed having all three of her boys in her band classes

Kathy Briggs, Choral Chair

Kathy Briggs has been teaching in public and private schools since 1998 She started her teaching career in public schools in rural Minnesota, where she taught elementary music and high school choir for eight years In 2006, she moved to Portland, OR where she leads the award-winning choir program at St Mary’s Academy Ms Briggs also conducted the University of Portland’s Bel Canto from 2014 - 2023 Her expertise is treble

choirs and treble choir literature, along with the use of movement in the choral rehearsal

Ms Briggs earned her BA in Music Education from the University of WisconsinMadison and her MA in Music Education/Choral Conducting from the University of St Thomas She has earned numerous awards and recognition for her teaching, including the 2024 OMEA Outstanding Music Educator Award and the 2016 Oregon ACDA Podium Award for Excellence in the Choral Arts Her research has been published in the ACDA Choral Journal, she has authored and published general music lesson plans for VH1 and NAfME, and she has been a clinician at both state and regional NAfME conferences Ms Briggs’s choirs have won numerous awards and recognition in the Pacific Northwest, including a performance at the 2022 OMEA State Conference, 2013 NAfME Northwest Conference, a performance at the 2018 Northwest ACDA Conference, and winning the 2015 OSAA State Choir Championship Her students have toured in New York, Florida, Washington, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and France and her choir was invited twice to perform for President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama and their guests in the White House (2012, 2013)

Ms Briggs is a third-generation educator – both her parents were public school teachers and her grandfather was a high school band director She was active in music from an early age and played the tuba in her rural Wisconsin high school band She is a proud member of ACDA, NAfME, and OMEA, is honored to be a Past-President of OMEA, currently serves as the Choral Chair on the OMEA/ACDA boards and is the OMEA State Student Composition Contest Chairperson Ms Briggs achieved her lifelong dream of meeting Julie Andrews in 2019

Brigid Mayer, Orchestra Chair

Brigid Mayer has spent the past twenty-two years teaching orchestras at all grade levels Her previous experience has included teaching assignments in Ohio, Georgia, Kansas and in the North Clackamas School District (OR) She currently serves as Director of Orchestras at West Salem High School

Originally from Burlington, Vermont, Mrs Mayer earned both a Bachelor of Music Education and an M A in Educational Administration from The Ohio State University While at OSU, she studied viola with Edward Adelson, and String Pedagogy with Dr Robert Gillespie Mrs Mayer is a member of OMEA, NafME, and ASTA She previously served as High School Orchestra Chair for Northeast Kansas Music Educators Association, and as Kansas ASTA President-Elect Her orchestras have performed and participated in clinics in Chicago, Orlando, Newport, and at the National Orchestra Festival (ASTA), and have consistently performed well in competitive orchestra settings

Mrs. Mayer has served as a clinician and adjudicator in Kansas, Missouri, and Oregon, and remains an active violist She lives in Keizer with her husband, Mac Mayer (Whiteaker MS Orchestra), and their three children (Eben, Noah, and Helen)

Val Locke, Elementary Music Chair

Mrs Val Locke earned three separate undergraduate degrees from Warner Pacific College: a BA in Music Studies, BS in Music Composition, and another BA in Music Education She received her M Ed in Creative Arts (focusing on Curriculum and Instruction) from Lesley University. She has Orff training, and certifications in World Music Drumming and Hot Marimba! as well as multiple other certificates.

A 26-year teaching veteran, Val currently teaches K-5 general music, choir, marimba, and art in the David Douglas School District in Portland, OR. She is also an adjunct professor for George Fox University’s Graduate teaching program and for Eastern Oregon University, teaching Music, Art, Theater, and Movement to future elementary educators. Mrs. Locke was also a formal mentor for Warner Pacific College. Mrs. Locke retired from flute and piccolo with the prestigious Portland Wind Symphony (25 years) and continues to play with the local Portland Power Pep Band She is sought after as a mentor, cooperating teacher, and friend to help guide new and aspiring music teachers in the northwest She has served as Oregon Music Education Association’s General Music Chair in the past, and helped form their first Advocacy Group. Recently, she was inducted into the Cadre of Distinguished Educators in her school district Val served on the NAfME Council for General Music, as their NW Representative (covering 6 states) for five years. She served as the OMEA District 2 Elementary Chair, and 5 years agoco-founded the very first elementary honor choir for that area. Val recently earned the Oregon Music Education Association’s 2020 Elementary Music Teacher of the Year Award Val’s guiding classroom motto is, “Together, We Rock!”… her focus on giving and service within her community. In her “spare” time, Val enjoys spending time with her family, painting, and traveling She highly recommends trying new things, even if it means looking like a dork in the process With her whimsical humor and free spirit, she echoes the wise words of Yoda, “Do Or do not There is no try”

Kelsie Demianew, General Music Chair

Kelsie Demianew is in her twenty-first year as an elementary music teacher at Cummings Elementary School in Keizer, where she teaches general and vocal music She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education from Linfield College and her Master of Interdisciplinary Studies, with a focus in Music Education, from Oregon State University

Kelsie has been active throughout her career serving on committees to improve music education in her school district Committees include the Textbook Adoption Committee, Scope and Sequence Committee, District Music Test Revision Committee and Elementary Music Curriculum Committee She is currently serving on her district’s Elementary Choral Festival Committee

She has held several positions on State and District OMEA boards as well This includes State Recording Secretary, All-State Elementary Honor Choir Co-Chair and Elementary Music Chair She has also served as District 4 Elementary Chair and District 4 Chair She is currently State Elementary General Music Chair

Kelsie believes every child is a musician and she strives to tap into that in each of her students She advocates for them, not only in the music classroom, but for their entire educational success

Mari Schay, Secondary General Music Chair

Mari Schay is the Program Coordinator and Assistant Professor of Music Education at Portland State University She is passionate about preparing future teachers to enter the PK-12 music classroom with humility and curiosity as well as the desire to serve all students in their schools by offering a broad curriculum in both traditional and modern music classes. Prior to joining the faculty at PSU, she taught elementary and middle school music for 23 years Mari is the author and editor of many curricular resources for general music teachers including pop music arrangements for Orff instruments

Jessika Smith, Jazz Chair

Jessika Smith is an award-winning jazz composer, saxophonist, and music educator She teaches at Parkrose Middle School and High School in Portland, and she directs the Jessika Smith Big Band. She plays frequently with jazz groups throughout Oregon and Washington, including Torrey Newhart’s Obsidian Animals and the Frank Irwin Sextet Jessika has worked with numerous young jazz groups in the Northwest, and frequently adjudicates jazz festivals and competitions throughout the west coast Jessika studied Jazz Composition and Arranging with Steve Owen at the University of Oregon, and has played and recorded professionally with many groups, including the Bob Curnow Big Band, Spokane Jazz Orchestra, the Columbia Basin Jazz Orchestra, the Emerald City Jazz Kings, and the Portland Jazz Composer’s Ensemble. Her first album, “Tricks of Light” features “Lights”, which was the 2013 winner of the Seattle Women’s Jazz Orchestra Composition Contest, and “Cyan Thread”, which won the 2015 NBA Young Jazz Composer Contest

Melissa Jmaeff, Small Schools Chair

Melissa Jmaeff is an award-winning music educator having taught music in small, public schools in Douglas County, Oregon since 2006 She currently teaches 6th-12th Grade Band and Choir for the Sutherlin School District

She graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from Humboldt State University in 2005 where she studied Flute Performance and

Music Education In 2023, Melissa earned a Master of Music in Music Education from Kent State University

Throughout the span of her career, Melissa has taught public school students of all ages from kindergarten through college-level Over the years, her school bands and choirs have earned performance spots at the prestigious Oregon School Activities Association State Band and Choir Championships and her private students have performed at the highest levels of competition in vocal and instrumental categories

In addition to her duties as a public school music teacher, Ruth is also the chair of her local Oregon Music Education Association’s district and is the OMEA Small Schools Advocacy Chair at the state level In these positions, she advocates for music education in small schools, urging equity and access to music education for all children–particularly those in rural communities She also serves on the National Association for Music Education (NAfME)’s Small Schools Advocacy Task Force

When she is not teaching, Melissa is a performing musician, having self-produced 4 albums of original Americana music She and her husband tour throughout the American west as a duo and with her band, Melissa Ruth & The Likely Stories

Andrew Bergh, Membership Chair

Andrew Bergh is in his fifth year as the Choir Director at Tualatin High School in the Tigard-Tualatin School District His directing responsibilities include four choirs and being the on-stage musical director He spent the previous four years teaching choirs at the junior high and high school in the Tillamook School District while also directing the Tillamook Community Chorus He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education and Vocal Performance at George Fox University In addition to teaching, he has performed with multiple professional ensembles including Male Ensemble Northwest, Portland Phoenix Choir, and the Portland Symphonic Choir He is serving his third year on the OMEA Board as Membership Chair

In his spare time, Andrew enjoys spending time with his wife, Bobi, and their three dogs, Zuko, Mai and Bosco, playing games with friends and family, and being a devout fan of the Portland Trail Blazers \

Cameron Jerde, Conference Exhibitor & Sustaining Membership Chair

Cameron Jerde is in his sixth year as Director of Bands at Southridge High School in Beaverton, OR Prior to his time at Southridge, he taught high school band for three years at Marshfield High School in Coos Bay, OR He holds two degrees from the University of Oregon: a Bachelor of Music in Music: Pre-Teacher Licensure (Class of 2014) and a Master of Music in Music Education (Class of 2016) While a graduate student, he was on the instructional staff of the Oregon

Athletic Bands as a Graduate Teaching Fellow, working with the Oregon Marching Band, the Oregon Basketball Band, and Oregon Campus Band Cameron’s responsibilities at Southridge include instructing and directing the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Mariachi Ensemble, Pit Orchestra, and the Music Theory course He is a member of the Oregon Music Education Association (OMEA), the Oregon Band Directors Association (OBDA), the National Band Association (NBA), and the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) Cameron lives in Beaverton, OR, with his wife Caitlin

Emily Warren, All-State Assistant Site Manager

Emily Warren is the band and choir director at Lorna Byrne Middle School and Illinois Valley High School She holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Oregon State University Emily leads energetic band and choir programs, encouraging her students to excel in performances and competitions

Outside of teaching, she is active in the music community through performances and being a percussion technician. In her free time, Emily enjoys reading, paddleboarding, surfing, and spending time with her family.

Kent Wilson, All-State Housing Manager

Kent is in his 8th year of teaching, currently at Whitford Middle School in Beaverton, teaching choir for grades 6-8 He previously taught Band, Choir, and Theater for grades 7-12 His student groups at the high school level have performed at OSAA State Choir, Solo and Ensemble, and State Thespian events He is a member of OMEA, ACDA, and the Portland Alumni Chapter of Mu Phi Epsilon He also sings with Willamette Master Chorus, and is an active musician for musical theater productions When not doing music, he’s probably in the kitchen cooking the latest recipe he saved on Tik Tok or Instagram

Joseph Demianew, All-State Transportation Manager

Mr Joseph Demianew attended Oregon State University He graduated in 2005 with a Bachelor of Science in Music He received a Masters in Art of Teaching in Music Education from Oregon State University in 2007 He has been teaching music at Central Linn Sr/Jr High School for 2 years and in McMinnville for 17 years

He has held positions on the Oregon Music Education Association Board of Control for 7 years He also held positions on the Oregon Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association for 8 years He was a student conductor for the Oregon State University University Chorale for 3 years He was the Graduate Assistant to Dr Steven Zeilke Director of Choral Studies at Oregon State University He did his student teaching at Wilsonville High School and Wood Middle School in Wilsonville Oregon He has

performed in these groups Montana State University Wind Ensemble, Montana State University University Singers, Montana State University Marching Band, University of Oregon Chamber Choir, University of Oregon Gospel choir, Oregon State University Concert Band, Oregon State University University Chorale, Oregon State University Meistersingers, and Oregon State University Chamber Choir He has been part of Adult Choir groups; Corvallis Repertory Singer and Salem Community Choir He has performed at National Conference for Music Educators in Salt Lake City He has performed in Prague, Czech Republic; Budapest, Hungary; Sofia, Bulgaria; Arizona, Nevada, and Victoria, BC

He has been teaching music for 19 years He has taught drama, choir, Mariachi, high School percussion, high school pep band, music production, 5th Grade Band, Intermediate band, and Concert Band at McMinnville and Central Linn

Trevor Lavery-Thompson, All-State Equipment Manager

Trevor Thompson serves as the band director at Joseph Lane Middle School in Roseburg, Oregon, where he also directs the Umpqua Community Concert Band In addition to his teaching roles, he performs with the Bone Dawgs Trombone Quartet Trevor is actively involved in leadership roles within the Oregon Music Education Association (OMEA), currently serving as Chair of District 8 and as Equipment Manager for the OMEA conference and honor ensembles He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Trombone Performance from California State University, Chico, and a Master’s in Music Education from the University of Oregon In 2022, Trevor presented his graduate research on mindfulness and flow state at both the National Association for Music Education National Conference held in Washington D C and the International Society of Research in Music Education Conference Trevor was awarded Oregon Music Educators Association’s 2024 Outstanding Middle School Music Educator award. When not teaching or performing, Trevor enjoys spending time with his wife, Robyn, and their dog, Seiya His hobbies include skiing, cycling, camping, hiking, gardening, and making music with friends

Josiah Glaser, All-State Luggage Manager

Josiah Glaser, a native of Salem, Oregon, is a passionate music educator currently serving as the band director at Seaside Middle and High Schools In his role, he leads three middle school concert bands, two high school concert bands, a high school jazz ensemble, and the high school ep band. Before joining the Seaside School District, Josiah directed the band program at Clackamas

Outside of his teaching responsibilities, Josiah performs in the North Coast Symphonic Band and ccasionally serves as a substitute musician for the North Coast Big Band and North Oregon Coast Symphony Additionally, he serves as a clinician

for marching and concert ensemble; as an adjudicator for solo, chamber, and large ensemble festivals; and as a drill writer for Northwest marching band programs

Josiah earned a Master’s in Music Education from the University of Oregon, where he also worked as a Graduate Teaching Fellow with the Oregon Athletic Bands Prior to attending the University of Oregon, Josiah graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Music at Western Oregon University. In his free time, Josiah enjoys spending quality time with friends and family and playing video games

Tristan Weitkamp, CNAfME Student Volunteer Coordinator

Tristan is currently serving as Band Director at Sherwood High School alongside Brant Stai He previously served in the role of Interim Director of Bands and full-time Visiting Instructor of Music at Portland State University, following the retirement of Pat Vandehey Tristan earned both a Master’s in Music with a focus on Instrumental Conducting and a Master’s in Education from Portland State Prior to his graduate studies, Tristan taught numerous jazz ensembles, marching ensembles, and small jazz combo groups across the Beaverton and Hillsboro school districts Tristan’s bachelor’s is in Jazz Studies, also from Portland State University, where he studied with George Colligan and Darrell Grant Following, he attended the University of Cape Town for post- baccalaureate studies in music, and global affairs He now seeks to balance his teaching, conducting, and performing aspirations with raising his baby daughter Aria with wife Melody, and their two dogs

Darcy Vogt Williams is the head band director at Stiles Middle School in Leander, TX She is a graduate of West Texas A&M University and in her 21st year of teaching Her bands have performed at The Midwest Clinic in Chicago and the Western International Band Clinic (WIBC) in Seattle While at Stiles MS her bands have been state finalists in the prestigious TMEA Honor Band Contest She is a member of Phi Beta Mu and serves on the Music For All Advisory Board

In addition to teaching, Darcy is a clinician across the country for both students and music educators She is the author of two books about teaching band (Teaching Rhythm Logically and Pacing for Success: Beginner Band) and creator of the music education podcast “After Sectionals”

Ann McBride, Ensemble Co-Manager

Ann McBride has been teaching instrumental music for 29 years in Oregon and Minnesota She holds a B S in Music Education from Minnesota State University - Moorhead and a Master’s Degree in Education from Lesley University She has served as secretary of OMEA District II and is currently a co-manager for the OMEA All State Middle School Band Ann has been active

in organizing band and solo festivals for OMEA District 2 and has recently begun working as a clinician and guest conductor for area festivals and honor bands She has also worked extensively on band curriculum and assessment for the GreshamBarlow School District Ann is currently in her 23rd year teaching band and world music at West Orient Middle School in Gresham, Oregon

When Ann is not teaching, you will find her running, hiking and taking adventures with her Australian cattle dog, Riley Ann and her husband John love to travel around the country and the world They are self-proclaimed foodies and are always on the hunt for their next amazing meal. When she is home, she enjoys time with her cats and researching the next travel adventure

Jenna Gagne, Ensemble Co-Manager

Jenna Gagne lives in Gresham, OR, and is in her seventh year as Director of Bands at Gordon Russell Middle School and 13th year in the Gresham-Barlow School District, where she teaches Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced Bands, Jazz Band, and a world music class

Mrs Gagne graduated from Oregon State University with a Bachelor of Music degree in 2011 and a Master of Arts in Teaching degree in 2012

In addition to teaching at Northwest Band Camps, and Mid-Valley Band Camps, Mrs Gagne also organizes band festivals and other music events, in addition to her years of assisting in the managing of the Oregon Middle School All State Band Mrs. Gagne also strives to keep up her flute and piccolo chops by playing as often as she can, including playing in the Tabor Wind Ensemble

When Mrs. Gagne is not involved in her musical endeavors, you will find her snowboarding with her husband Justin on the slopes of Mt Hood, paddle-boarding and hiking throughout the Northwest, enjoying time on the Coast, loving on her wooly husky Achilles, and heading back to her native Canada as often as possible

Richard Meyer is a highly sought after music educator and maintains an active schedule as a guest conductor and clinician For 35 years he taught string students at the elementary, middle school, and high school levels in the public schools For 22 of those years, he directed the orchestras at Oak Avenue Intermediate School in Temple City, California, growing the program from 29 string students to 200 and was in charge of the city’s elementary string program In 2009, Mr Meyer implemented the “Giving Bach” program at his school which has garnered national attention for its innovative ways of using interactive concerts to bring music into the lives of special needs and inner-city school students throughout Southern California

He was the music director of the Pasadena Youth Symphony Orchestra for 16 years, conducting them in performances in New York, Washington D C , Vienna, Australia, and Canada He has been a featured clinician at the A S T A National Conference, Texas Orchestra Directors’ Association Conference, Australia National Band and Orchestra Conference and string teachers’ workshops at Ohio State University and Birch Bay, Washington He has also guest-conducted All-State and Honor Orchestras in several states and abroad

In addition to his teaching and conducting assignments, Mr Meyer is a nationallyrecognized, best-selling composer with over 200 compositions and arrangements in print, and for 16 years served as string editor for Alfred Publishing Company He is the co-author of several string method books, including the popular “String Explorer” Series and “Sight-read It for Strings” He and his wife, Rose, live in Sierra Madre, California and have three daughters and four grandchildren

Mac Mayer, Ensemble Co-Manager

Mac Mayer is Orchestra Director at Whiteaker Middle School and feeder elementary schools in Keizer, Oregon He holds undergraduate degrees in Music Performance and Music Education from The Ohio State University and a Master of Music Education from the University of Kansas Prior to teaching in the Salem-Keizer School District Mr Mayer taught orchestra in Olathe, Kansas, as well as communities in Georgia and Ohio Mr Mayer is honored to serve today as the Co-Chair for the Oregon Middle School All-State Orchestra. Mr. Mayer is a certified orchestra adjudicator for the state of Oregon, and works frequently as an adjudicator, clinician, and conductor throughout the state and region Mr Mayer is on staff with Salem Youth Symphony as conductor of the Amadeus Orchestra

Mr Mayer is married to Brigid Mayer, Orchestra Director at West Salem High School in Salem, Oregon His son Eben played cello through high school and is currently studying wildlife biology at the University of Montana, his other son Noah plays violin for South Salem High School’s Chamber Orchestra and Symphony, and youngest daughter Helen has started playing violin in elementary school orchestra! Mr Mayer is thrilled to serve as your Co-Chair and looks forward to providing many more opportunities to students through music!

Myriam Gendron-Dupont, Ensemble Co-Manager

Myriam is the Orchestra Director at Rosemont Ridge Middle School in the West-Linn-Wilsonville School District She is a native French speaker from Quebec, Canada and is certified to teach Music and French Myriam is a lifelong cellist and always knew she would follow a career path embedded in the music world She attended Portland State University on a full scholarship and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music and a Masters in Education She obtained her teaching license and has worked over 17 years in the public education system, teaching elementary general music, choir and orchestra, as well as middle school choir, orchestra, guitar and French She is currently attending PSU to earn a second Masters degree in Curriculum & Instruction

Myriam is a certified Orchestra adjudicator for the state of Oregon. She co-manages two honor ensembles: the OMEA MS All-State Orchestra and the District 14 MS Honor Orchestra She also currently serves as District 14 Chair for OMEA and was recently elected secretary for the Oregon ASTA board

Myriam teaches middle school orchestra and guitar, private lessons on the cello, and performs with the Tilikum Chamber Orchestra She lives in Oregon City with her husband James and their only daughter Isabelle, who is a student at Portland State University where she is studying Business and minoring in Art

Dr Brian J Winnie is the Director of Choral Studies at Western Illinois University where he supervises the graduate choral conducting program; teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in choral conducting, choral pedagogy, and choral literature; and conducts the Chamber Singers and the “flagship” ensemble, the University Singers He is also the artistic director and founder of withonevoice, a professional non-profit, sixteen-member vocal ensemble based in Chicago, Illinois Prior to his tenure in higher education, Dr Winnie was the Artistic Director of ChoralSounds NW, a community choir based in Burien, WA and taught for seven years in public education at both the middle and high school levels

An active festival conductor and adjudicator, Dr. Winnie has been international artistin-residence and has worked with all-state and regional honor choirs throughout the United States in Pennsylvania, Missouri, Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio, Oregon, Washington, Kansas, Oregon, and Alaska He is a frequent guest lecturer/workshop leader and has presented at international, regional, and state conferences He has published articles in the Voice and Speech Review, Choral Journal, Voice Foundation

His award-winning choirs have performed at multiple state conventions and regional conferences and received accolades in both international and national competitions Most recently, the Western Illinois University Singers were invited to perform at the ACDA Midwestern Regional Conference in 2024, and they won the 2021 American Prize in the Performance of American Music (University/College division)

A native of Pennsylvania, Dr Winnie received his B S in Music Education from the Pennsylvania State University, Master of Music Education from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and his Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting from the University of Washington. Additionally, he is a certified Estill Master Trainer and Estill Mentor & Course Instructor with Testing Privileges in Estill Voice Training

Dr Winnie currently serves on the Editorial Board for the Voice and Speech Review, the Estill Voice International Certification Advisory Board, and the National Collegiate Choral Organization

Danika Locey, Ensemble Co-Manager

Danika Locey is the director of choirs at Leslie Middle School in the Salem Keizer School District, where she teaches choir, leadership, and Unified Music. She started her career in Medford, Oregon, where she also taught beginning band Danika serves on the OMEA state board as the Recording Secretary and on the Oregon ACDA board as the Middle School Co-Chair

She received both her Bachelor of Arts in Choral Music Education and her Master of Arts in Teaching from Oregon State University, where she studied with Dr Steven Zielke and Dr Sandra Babb

In addition to her duties as a choir director, Danika also enjoys serving as a church musician with St Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Salem, where she is also involved with the Filipino community choir Danika is a devoted cat parent and avid college football fan, and when she isn’t teaching she enjoys sewing, crocheting, and spending time with her large and lovable family

Kristian Bumanlag, Ensemble Co-Manager

Born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, Kristian attended Pacific University where he obtained his Bachelors in Music Education While at Pacific, he performed with the Chamber Singers under the direction of Scott Tuomi

Currently Kristian is in his third year at St Helens Middle School teaching choir and current WEB advisor Outside of teaching, Kristian performs for various other ensembles such as Portland Phoenix Choir and the MAC Balladeers He is currently singing with the Oregon Chorale under the direction of Jason Sabino

Cindy Mair, Accompanist

Cindy Mair retired in 2016 from a rewarding 36-year career teaching K-12 music in public education Her specialties included elementary classroom music in addition to middle and high school choral instruction An Oregon native, Cindy received her BA in Music Education from Oregon State University and later her masters in administrative leadership from Concordia University Her favorite assignment has always been that of a collaborative pianist She has accompanied many ensembles and soloists both at the local and state level Cindy accompanied the Portland Symphonic Girlchoir from 2016-2022 She currently plays for the Milwaukie Lutheran Choir and Tilikum Choir Community under the direction of John Baker. In 2022, Cindy joined the artistic staff of the Oregon Repertory Singers Youth Choir under the direction of Aubrey Patterson She is thrilled to return as the collaborative pianist for this years’ Tenor/Bass Middle School All-State Choir!

Jeffery Redding, Conductor

Dr Jeffery Redding, Director of Choral Activities at the University of Central Florida (UCF), is a passionate choral conductor, educator, and public speaker As the 2019 GRAMMY Music Educator Award recipient, he has dedicated his career to fostering musical excellence and inspiring future generations of choral artists

Throughout his career, Dr. Redding has led his choirs to significant achievements, earning numerous awards and performing at prestigious venues worldwide His innovative teaching methods and dedication to his students have positively impacted the lives of many musicians

As a sought-after guest conductor, clinician, and public speaker, Dr Redding has shared his love for music with honor choirs, All-State ensembles, and professional choral organizations across the United States and abroad His infectious passion and ability to connect with audiences of all ages have earned him widespread admiration He was honored to give the prestigious TEDx Talk He is also one of the conductors for Walt Disney World’s Candlelight Processional at Epcot and the conductor of Harmonious Live! found on YouTube

Beyond his academic pursuits, Dr Redding is a dedicated community leader and a passionate advocate for choral music He has founded and directed several choral ensembles, including the Winter Garden Community Choir and the Orlando Choral Society, as well as serving as Worship Arts Leader at Tuskawilla United Methodist Church These organizations provide opportunities for individuals of all ages to participate in choral singing and experience the transformative power of music

Dr Redding’s exceptional talent, dedication, and commitment to excellence have earned him widespread recognition and respect His legacy as a visionary choral conductor and educator continues to inspire and shape the future of choral music

Dr Redding holds a Ph D in Choral Conducting/Music Education and a Master of Music Education, both from Florida State University, and a B S in Music Education from Florida A&M University He is a member of ACDA, NAfME, FVA, and Chorus America He has served his profession in numerous capacities, as District 8 Chair for the Florida Vocal Association (FVA), as State R&R Chair for Ethnic Music/ MulticulturalAffairs, R&R Chair for Youth/Student Activities, and High School Mixed Honor Choir co-chair for FloridaACDA, and as R&R Chair for Community Choirs for Southern Division ACDA Currently, he is R&R Lifelong Coordinator (Community, Music and Worship) for Florida ACDA

Suvi Mirka, Ensemble Co-Manager

Suvi Mirka lives in Portland, OR, was born in South Korea but grew up in the metro area Suvi is the director of choirs at Gordon Russell Middle School in the Gresham Barlow School District At Gordon Russell she teaches 5 choirs and Strategies for Success She received her undergraduate degree from George Fox University in Music Education and vocal performance, and then pursued her Masters in Teaching at Portland State University She did a year of post baccalaureate work at Portland State before her masters to focus on choral conducting, vocal pedagogy, and sang in the PDX Jazz Choir Suvi has been the OMEA All-State Treble Choir manager for the last four years, and has greatly enjoyed working to help our students have a wonderful time at All-State. She also serves as the middle school choral chair for District 2 Recently Suvi has been asked to clinic and judge and she has greatly enjoyed the opportunity to work with other choirs

Suvi is passionate about creating a safe space for students to learn how to be the best version of themselves through community and music Suvi loves teaching choir, sharing the joy of learning, and could not have made it to where she is today without her wonderful mentors, friends, and family

When Suvi is not teaching she loves serving as a musician at her church playing guitar and singing. She also has a majestic cat named Joe, and when she isn’t working she loves to try new restaurants, play pickleball, and drink a good cup of coffee

Melinda Murdock, Ensemble Co-Manager

Melinda Murdock is in her 23rd year teaching choral studies at Jackson Middle School in Portland, Oregon She has earned degrees from Nova Southeastern University (M A ) and Idaho State University (B A) While attending ISU, she studied choral conducting with Dr Scott Anderson and participated in numerous international choral tours, including England, Central Europe, Italy, Greece, and Brazil She also worked with the late Weston Noble, in Idaho and Brazil, as a model for correct choral technique Except for the two pandemic years, her auditioned Ensemble Choir has participated the past 21 years in Worldstrides Heritage Festivals, including nine times in their Festival of Gold in New York City, Washington D C , and Nashville This March they have been selected to perform as the featured choir at the WorldStrides Festival at Carnegie Hall: National Youth Choir

Her Concert Choir performed at the Oregon All-State convention in 2020, and they have consistently ranked in the top five at the Best in the Northwest Choral Festival. In demand as a clinician and adjudicator, Melinda was also nominated for the prestigious Oregon Music Educator of the Year award (2006) and was named Teacher of the Year by the Portland Parent Teacher Association (2007) Melinda is a trained classical singer and maintains a vocal studio, with her students often ranking in the top ten at the state level She strives to instill in her students a lifelong love of music

Angela Hjertstedt, Accompanist

Angela Hjertstedt was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. She entered an undergraduate degree in Vocal Performance from Portland State University, followed by a Master’s degree in Education, also at PSU

She won the “Young Artists: Live at the Schnitz” competition, soloing with members of the Oregon Symphony, as well as the collegiate level of the National Association of Teachers in Singing (NATS) competition in Oregon She continues to perform frequently as a vocalist and pianist around the Portland area, and sang with the professional group “Choro in Scuola” for 6 years She is also frequently hired to accompany soloists and choirs around the state She has taught private voice and piano lessons for over 20 years, as well as been involved in church music ministry at local and regional levels She is an active member of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) as well as the Oregon Music Educators Association (OMEA)

Angela now teaches Middle School choir, and her choirs have won many accolades under her direction She lives in Happy Valley, Oregon with her husband and two teenage sons

Janel Huyett is a highly respected music educator with a career spanning over 30 years in elementary classrooms Ms Huyett holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from the University of Iowa and a Master of Arts in Education: Administration and Supervision from the University of Phoenix She has taught band, general music, and choir in several different schools in the Mesa Public School District and held the position of District Band Specialist for 12 years She began with Phoenix Children’s Chorus in 2006 as a music literacy teacher and became the Presto Conductor in 2008 During her time at PCC, Janel has helped to develop a choral curriculum that introduces music literacy in an engaging and meaningful way to young singers

Ms Huyett is a member of the National Flute Association (NFA), the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) and the Arizona Music Educators Association (AMEA) She is currently serving as the AzACDA Community Youth Choirs R&R Chair She has shared her expertise at state and national conferences, presenting on topics such as “Elementary Vocal Warm-ups” and “Incorporating Literacy into the Elementary Choir Rehearsal” Additionally, she has conducted performances for both elementary band and choir at Arizona state conferences

Outside of her professional life, Janel enjoys activities like Pilates, kayaking, and paddle boarding, which contribute to her overall well-being and balance her dedication to her craft

John Hillan-Payne, Co-Ensemble Manager

John Hillan-Payne is delighted to be co-manager of the 2025 OMEA Elementary All-State Choir With 20+ years of directing children’s choirs, teaching classroom music, and presenting teacher workshops, he seeks to instill in students a lifelong passion for music through fun and rigorous experiences in singing songs and games, playing instruments, and movement He graduated from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music with a Bachelor of Music Education degree (2004) and earned a Master’s in Teaching degree from Portland State University (2009) Further trainings include Orff-Schulwerk and Kodály philosophies, as well as National Board Certification. In 2016, he was the recipient of the OMEA Outstanding Music Educator award He works to strengthen music education in Oregon by serving on several boards and committees; he is a Past President of Southern Washington and Oregon Kodály Educators (SWOKE) and has been Elementary Chair for the Oregon Music Education Association Mr Hillan-Payne has taught in the West Linn-Wilsonville School District since 2004, and is currently the music teacher at Lowrie Primary School and artistic director of the Wilsonville Choral Arts Society Children’s Choir

Allison Hedgepeth, Co-Ensemble Manager

Allison Hedgepeth has taught elementary music for 22 years in Kansas, California, and Oregon For the last 17 years she has been teaching at Forest Hills Elementary in Lake Oswego, OR Allison graduated from Kansas State with a Bachelors of Music Education and Portland State University with a Masters of Music in Education. Allison has completed the first level of Orff training and all four levels of Kodaly training She is currently the All-State Elementary Honor Choir Co-Manager, OMEA District 14 Elementary Honor Choir Manager, and OMEA Dist 14 Vice Chair Allison was alo the 2023 Oregon Music Educators Association “Excellence in Elementary Music Education” award recipient

Dr Joseph L Jefferson, Associate Professor of Music and Director of Jazz Ensembles/Applied Jazz Trombone at St Olaf College, boasts expertise in both classical and jazz genres, demonstrating his versatility across various musical platforms Recognized for his achievements, he was honored as one of the “Yamaha 40 under 40” Class of 2023 and received the 2022 Ellis Marsalis, Jr Jazz Educator of the Year award from the Jazz Education Network Joseph’s performance career has seen him share stages with notable artists like Vanessa Williams, Nick Finzer, and Randy Brecker He’s showcased his solo talent with collegiate ensembles including the Marshall University Jazz Ensemble and George Fox University Jazz Ensemble His contributions extend beyond performance, having been featured at prestigious events such as the International Trombone Festival, Texas Music Educators Clinic/Conference (TMEA), and the Jazz Education Network Conference, among others

Before joining St. Olaf College, Joseph held faculty positions at Southeast Missouri State University and The University of Portland, earning degrees from Norfolk State University, Shenandoah Conservatory, and West Virginia University Actively involved in the music community, Joseph is a member of the Jazz Education Network

and the International Trombone Association Additionally, he serves as a clinician for Jazz at Lincoln Center and exclusively plays Yamaha instruments as a Yamaha performing artist Grounded in his belief in the spiritual connection between music and the soul, Joseph infuses his performances and teachings with a deep reverence for the transformative power of music

Cory Francis, Ensemble Co-Manager

Cory Francis grew up in Salem, OR and received a degree in Music Education from the University of Oregon in June 2020 He has previously taught in the Banks School District and Salem-Keizer School District teaching band, marching/pep band, jazz band, choir, and SPED music. He is currently the Director of Bands and Choirs at Taft 7-12 School in Lincoln City, OR His primary instruments are the trombone and electric/upright bass Outside of music, his hobbies include basketball, hiking, and going on walks at the beach

Tristan Weitkamp, Ensemble Co-Manager

Tristan is currently serving as Band Director at Sherwood High School alongside Brant Stai He previously served in the role of Interim Director of Bands and full-time Visiting Instructor of Music at Portland State University, following the retirement of Pat Vandehey Tristan earned both a Master’s in Music with a focus on Instrumental Conducting and a Master’s in Education from Portland State Prior to his graduate studies, Tristan taught numerous jazz ensembles, marching ensembles, and small jazz combo groups across the Beaverton and Hillsboro school districts Tristan’s bachelor’s is in Jazz Studies, also from Portland State University, where he studied with George Colligan and Darrell Grant Following, he attended the University of Cape Town for post- baccalaureate studies in music, and global affairs He now seeks to balance his teaching, conducting, and performing aspirations with raising his baby daughter Aria with wife Melody, and their two dogs

T André Feagin, Conductor

Dr T André Feagin serves as Director of Bands and Associate Professor of Music at Central Washington University where he guides the educational and artistic vision of a comprehensive band program He heads the graduate wind conducting program and serves as the conductor of the Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble, the preeminent wind band at CWU Under his leadership, the CWU Wind Ensemble was a featured performer at the 2022 College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA) Western/Northwestern Division Conference and at the 2024 World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensemble (WASBE) International convention in Gwangju, South Korea.

Dr Feagin has appeared as a guest conductor with numerous All-state, honor bands, and professional bands and orchestras throughout the United States, Canada, Central and Southwest Europe, and Southeast Asia As a clinician/presenter, he has been invited to speak on conducting, diversity and inclusivity in music education, and leadership at numerous music educators’ conferences across the United States and around the globe In 2022 he presented at the 19th WASBE International convention in Prague, Czech Republic

Dr Feagin holds professional memberships in the National Association for Music Education, College Band Directors National Association, World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, Washington Music Educators Association, Patron of Mu Phi Epsilon, and honorary memberships in both Tau Beta Sigma and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia He currently serves on the diversity, and research committees of the College Band Directors National Association and serves on the advisory board of Emergence: Research & Performance Topics in Black Music, the scholarly publication of the National Associations of Negro Musicians, Inc

Dr Feagin holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in wind conducting from the University of Arizona School of Music where he was a student of Gregg I Hanson

Daniel Hartley, Ensemble Co-Manager

Daniel is in his eleventh year of teaching high school band and is currently teaching at Lakeridge High School in Lake Oswego Prior to teaching at Lakeridge, Daniel taught for seven years at Kelso High School in Kelso, WA and served as the District Music Coordinator for Kelso School District and the President of the Southwest Washington Music Educators Association (SWWMEA) In 2017 he was named Secondary Teacher of the Year for Kelso School District

In his free time Daniel plays Principal Trombone and serves on the Board of the Portland Wind Symphony and also serves on the board for the non-profit: LO for Love He is also the President-Elect of the Oregon Band Directors Association (OBDA) and manages the OMEA All-State Symphonic Band He earned his Bachelor and Masters degrees in Music Education from University of Oregon He lives with his husband, André, and two cats, Gizmo and Gadget, in SE Portland

Seth Arnold, Ensemble Co-Manager

Seth Arnold graduated with a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the University of Oregon and earned his Master of Music Education from Central Washington University through the American Band College. He currently leads five performing ensembles in the Gladstone School District, where he teaches students from 6th through 12th grade Seth is currently in his tenth year of teaching and serves as the Vice Chair for District 13 He is lucky enough to go through life with his wife, and fellow music educator, Emily Arnold

Dr Julie Yu is Professor of Music and Director of Choral Studies at the Wanda L Bass School of Music at Oklahoma City University and the Artistic Director of Canterbury Voices, Oklahoma’s premier symphony chorus

She holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education from the University of Central Oklahoma, a Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting from Oklahoma State University, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Choral Conducting from the University of North Texas. Before joining OCU and Canterbury Voices, she taught at Norman North High School in Oklahoma, San José State University, and Kansas State University

She has given presentations and conducted, and/or her choirs have performed for state and regional conferences of the American Choral Directors Association, National Association for Music Education, and the European Music Educators Association She is the past president of the Southwestern Region of the American Choral Directors Association and served as an International Conducting Exchange Fellow to Kenya Her favorite area of research and performance is working as a guest clinician/ conductor for various honor choirs and professional organizations

Josh Weir, Ensemble Co-Manager

Joshua Weir is the Director of choirs at Kraxberger Middle School and Gladstone High School He earned his bachelor of Music Education from Warner Pacific University and his Master of Music in Choral Conducting from Portland State University Mr Weir’s middle school choirs have won awards from the music in the parks program and his high school choir made it to the Oregon State Choir Championships in 2019 Mr Weir’s Jazz Choir has also won numerous CCC Vocal Jazz Festival awards Outside of teaching Mr Weir sings in the Oregon Repertory Singers and is the associate conductor for Unistus Chamber Choir During his tenure as Assistant Conductor, he has had the opportunity to travel to numerous US cities for the West Coast Estonian Days He has traveled twice to Estonian to participate in Laulupidu (Song Party) where he sang in a choir of 35,000 voices Mr Weir has also sung in the Portland Opera Chorus, Portland Symphonic Choir, and Novum Chamber Singers Mr Weir is the organizer of District 13’s High School Honor Choir and this is Mr Weir’s 4th year as a high school all-state group co-manager

Luis Rivera, Ensemble Co-Manager

Luis Rivera is one of the co-managers for the all-state treble choir He is in his sixth year of teaching and currently is the choir director at Woodburn high school Rivera holds a bachelors of music from the University of Oregon Rivera is also highly involved in performing around the community He sings with the chamber choir group In Medio where he has been a part of the choir for four years

Lauren Servias, Accompanist

Lauren Servias has performed with Tacoma Opera, the Oregon Festival of American Music, Eugene Ballet, Cascadia Concert Opera, Northwest Opera In Schools Etc (NOISE), Lark Opera, Seattle Civic Dance Theatre, and the National Opera Center, among other performing arts organizations Servias taught on the Oregon State University music faculty from 2012 to 2021, serving as the music director for OSU Opera, instructor of group piano and accompanying, and pianist for Bella Voce and the Corvallis-OSU Symphony She now is an in-demand freelance pianist, adjudicator, and lecturer. Servias holds a Master of Music degree in Collaborative Piano Performance from the University of Oregon and a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance from Central Washington University

John Lynch, Conductor

John Lynch is a leading international wind band conductor and a dual citizen of the United States and Australia He is currently the Director of Bands and Professor of Music at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, a freelance conductor/composer/ teacher based in Madison Wisconsin, and the new Musical Director of the Madison Brass Band He was formerly the Director of Bands and Wind Symphony Conductor at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music where he created the first graduate degrees in wind conducting and the first comprehensive university band program in Australian history He is the founder and artist director of the Verbrugghen Ensemble, the Conservatorium’s professional chamber orchestra in residence, and was previously Director of Bands and Professor of Music at the University of Georgia and the University of Kansas Other positions include those at Northwestern University and Emory University He was the Music Director of Chicago’s renown Northshore Concert Band and the Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony and is the founder of the Greater New York Wind Symphony and the University of Kansas/Kansas City Youth Wind Symphony

John Lynch has performed throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, South America, Asia, and Australia including the national conferences of the College Band Directors National Association, the American Bandmasters Association, the National Association for Music Education, Australian National Band and Orchestra Conference, the Midwest Clinic, World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, as well as at Interlochen, Barcelona’s Grec Festival, and invited tours of Spain, China, Argentina, and Europe Lynch has three professional recordings on the Naxos label including the premiere in the Wind Band Classics Series, and one on the Klavier label He is a published composer through C Alan Music and Maestro and Fox Awards include The American Prize, the national Stanbury Award for outstanding conducting and teaching, New York’s Big Apple Corps National Leadership in the Arts award, The University of Georgia Creative Research Medal, a Northwestern University Searle Fellow for Teaching Excellence, and elected membership in the American Bandmasters Association, Phi Beta Mu international band honor fraternity, and Pi Kappa Lamba music honor fraternity He was nominated for Performance of the Year in the Australian Arts Music Awards An advocate for diversity in music, he serves on the advisory boards of several think tanks including the Institute for Composer Diversity and is one of the featured conductors in “The Horizon Leads Forward ” John Lynch is a passionate advocate for new music and has commissioned, recorded, and premiered works from around the globe by both today’s leading composers and those new to writing for the wind band and brass band mediums He has a special interest in interdisciplinary work, as well as forwarding the wind band and brass band as serious genres for creative, artistic expression John Lynch holds degrees from Indiana University, the Eastman School of Music and the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music

Frank Petrik has been an educator for 26 years in Oregon He currently is the Director of Bands at Lincoln High School in Portland He has taught at Beaumont Middle School, John F Kennedy High, Sherwood High, Silverton High School and Ron Russell Middle School He is an Oregon Band Director Association certified adjudicator, past OMEA Advocacy Chair, District 4 Band Chair, District 14 Band Chair and is the current OBDA President

Kevin Soon, Ensemble Co-Manager

Kevin Soon has served as the Director of Instrumental Music at Liberty High School in Hillsboro since 2007 Prior to his appointment at Liberty, he taught band and choir in the public schools of Cave Junction, Oregon He holds a Master of Arts in Teaching degree from Western Oregon University and a Bachelor of Science in

Music degree from the University of Oregon He has proudly served as the Music Director of the Tualatin Valley Community Band since 2015 Mr Soon is a member of the National Association for Music Education, Oregon Music Education Association and the Oregon Band Directors Association, where he serves as the Northwest Region Representative He has served on the board of the Oregon Music Education Association and as President of the Northwest Association for the Performing Arts He lives in Portland with his wife and three children

Dr David Morrow, a native of Rochester, NY, was valedictorian of his Morehouse College class, holds a Master of Music degree from the University of Michigan and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music He is a long-time faculty member at Morehouse College and is current Chair of the Music Department He conducts the renowned Morehouse College Glee Club to domestic and world-wide acclaim; most recently in the 50th Anniversary Tour of Nigeria in 2024 He also conducts the Wendell P Whalum Community Chorus and Co-Directs the Morehouse-Spelman Chorus His conducting honors include performances in such widely varying venues as Atlanta’s Symphony Hall with, soprano, Jessye Norman, the national anthem of Superbowl XXVIII with Natalie Cole, the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1996 Atlanta Centennial Olympic Games, on the masterworks series for the Colour of Music Festival

in Charleston, South Carolina With the Morehouse College Glee Club he has conducted at Carnegie Hall, with the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra, the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, the Georgia Symphony Orchestra and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra He is a sought-after choral clinician and lecturer, who serves on the Board of Directors of both the Intercollegiate Men’s Choruses, Inc and Chorus America, Inc , and has served on the Georgia Council for the Arts He holds membership in the Metropolitan Atlanta Musicians Association, The National Association of Negro Musicians, Inc , the American Choral Directors Association, the Georgia Music Educators Association, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and is a “Friend of the Arts” member of Sigma Alpha Iota His compositions and arrangements are published with Alfred Music Publishers, Oxford Music and GIA music publishers He has written a chapter on the Morehouse College Glee Club in Conducting Men’s Choirs, edited by Donald L Trott

Belinda Sisson is the Director of Choirs at Ridgeview High School in Redmond Oregon She has her Master’s Degree in Art and Teaching and her Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from the College of Liberal Arts at Oregon State University She has served as the Collegiate NAfME representative on the Board of the Oregon Music Educators Association Her favorite part about being an ensemble manager is getting to see the joy that singing brings to each of the students and watching them make lifelong friendships

Naomi LaViolette, Accompanist

Naomi LaViolette is a composer, performer, singer-songwriter and versatile pianist based in Portland, Oregon She has a master’s degree in classical piano performance – but she has also immersed herself in the study of jazz standards, folk songs, soul, pop and gospel Naomi has released multiple singles and four records, most recently Live at The Old Church with Members of the Oregon Symphony, released February 2019 Her recordings have received great reviews and critical acclaim and she has performed at esteemed venues and festivals including the Carnegie Hall Weill Recital Hall, Portland Jazz Festival, Jimmy Mak’s, the Doug Fir Lounge, the Aladdin Theater and All Classical Portland Her work with Steven Goodwin and the Saving His Music project has received prominent coverage in national and local news, including CBS Sunday Morning Their record, entitled The

Since 2004, the Oregon Repertory Singers have made her an essential part of their artistic staff as their pianist Naomi is a published choral composer with Santa Barbara Publishing The Oregon Symphony collaborates with Naomi as a songwriter and arranger for the Lullaby Project. Naomi frequently sings national anthems for conventions and sporting events, and she is a pianist for Michael Allen Harrison’s Ten Grands concert and She’s Speaking, a collective that creates forums/spaces for women’s voices and women’s stories to be heard

Christopher Fashun, Conductor

Dr Christopher H Fashun is a versatile conductor, performer, and music educator Known for his ability to conduct and perform across classical, popular, and folkloric styles, he has worked with Broadway star Doug LaBrecque, beatboxing saxophonist Derek Brown, bluegrass mandolinist Nate Roberts, tap dancer Heather Cornell, Brazilian group Choro das 3, and recorded with jazz artists Jordan VanHemert, Rodney Whitaker, and Lisa Sung on Navona Records A champion of new music, Dr Fashun has commissioned works from composers Texu Kim, Evan Williams, Andrew Maxfield, Choro das 3, Micheal Udow, Egemen Kesikli, and Christopher Theofanidis Other notable conducting engagements include the Holland Symphony Orchestra, the Elkhart Symphony Orchestra, the La Porte County Symphony Orchestra, and the St Ambrose University Community Symphony Orchestra Dr Fashun served as the Music Director/Conductor for the Elkhart Youth Honors orchestra and the Holland Area Youth Orchestra and conducted the Iowa All-State Symphony String Orchestra, Midwest Mennonite Festival Orchestra and Concert Band, and several All-County Festivals

A distinguished recipient of a 2019 Fulbright Award in the U S Scholar Program, Dr Fashun lived in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil researching Afro-Brazilian music and culture. His project title, “The Dissemination of Afro-Brazilian Music in Salvador da

Bahia” explored the cultural, racial, religious, and musical milieu that contribute to the shared musical identity of Afro-Brazilians and, by extension, all of Brazil His research brings more awareness to the various ways music is taught and disseminated within Brazilian culture As an application of this research, Dr Fashun created the Holland Samba School, an intergenerational community group that teaches the culture and drumming styles of Brazil

Dr Fashun has presented sessions at the national NAfME and state music education conferences throughout the Midwest, teaching K-8 music educators how to integrate Brazilian songs, rhythms, and dance into the general music classroom Central to his mission as an award winning guest conductor, clinician, and performer, Dr Fashun seeks to create community through the joy of music.

When he’s not making music, he is either cycling, paddle boarding, and enjoying the great outdoors with his wife and daughter

Kevin Rouse, Ensemble Co-Manager

Kevin Rouse is a graduate of the University of Maryland, where he received a degree in music education As a bass trombonist, he studied under Matthew Guilford, the bass trombonist for the National Symphony Orchestra Rouse received his masters through American Band College Rouse is the instrumental music director at Lake Oswego High School in Lake Oswego, Oregon Previously, he was the director at Thomas S Wootton High School in Rockville, Maryland (2014 - 2018), and Northwest High School in Germantown, Maryland (2006 – 2014) His bands and orchestras have received consistent superior ratings at county and state festivals Mr Rouse’s marching bands, symphonic bands, and orchestras have also received multiple awards in Florida, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland

Rouse has a thriving trombone/baritone studio. He also adjudicated solo and ensemble festivals in several counties in Maryland and is a judge for the marching band circuit, NWAPA

He has enjoyed composing and arranging for his marching band and other schools around the country He has composed for small ensembles and marching bands for the past 11 years His music has won many “best music” awards for marching bands In 2017, the music he composed for Thomas S Wootton High School won “best music” at the group 3A Maryland state competition and the US Bands National Championship His music for Northwest High School also won “best music” at the Maryland state competition in the 2A group

Eri Nogueira, Ensemble Co-Manager

Eri Nogueira is a dedicated educator and versatile musician In 2018, she joined the Lake Oswego School District as the orchestra director for both Lake Oswego Middle and High Schools, where she also coordinated and taught in the Lake Oswego Elementary Strings after-school program Currently, Eri teaches general music at Palisades World Language School and conducts the Hillsboro Overture Strings at the Metropolitan Youth Symphony

Eri’s passion for teaching and commitment to nurturing others have been central to her career As a versatile performer, she continues to collaborate with ensembles across genres, sharing her talents with a diverse musical community
