Erika Lockwood, OMEA President
Erika Lockwood has been teaching singers from preschool through 12th grade since 2002, becoming the Director of Choirs at Rex Putnam High School in 2011 Under her direction, the choirs have been awarded numerous Gold Awards by the Oregon ACDA in addition to top placings in league and state festivals (OSAA 5A Champions, 2014 and 2022) Ms Lockwood is a state certified choral adjudicator and has served on the board of the Oregon chapter of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) She is currently serving as President of the Oregon Music Education Association (OMEA) .
Ms Lockwood holds a Master of Education as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Music with High Honor from Portland State University She serves as a mentor to teacher candidates as well as new music teachers in her area She is passionate about equity, inclusion, and connection in the music classroom . She lives in Milwaukie with her husband and two children - all musicians - and enjoys running, yoga, baking, and spending time on the water
Cole Haole-Valenzuela, OMEA President-Elect, 1st Vice President
Cole Haole-Valenzuela was raised in Salem, Oregon, where he was heavily involved in various Salem-Keizer performing arts programs He graduated from Sprague High School and attended Oregon State University, in which he earned a Bachelor in Music Education and a Music Education Master of Art in Teaching . While serving on various NFHS, OSAA, and OMEA boards as a music representative, Cole has consistently strived to amplify student voices and guide discussions toward decisions that prioritize what is best for kids He has been presented the Emerging Conductor Award from Oregon ACDA in 2019, the Outstanding Early Career Music Educator Award from OMEA, the NFHS Outstanding Music Educator Award in 2023, as well as the Oregon Symphony Music Educator of the Year award in 2024 Cole is currently the Director of Choirs at West Salem High School, where his ensembles have performed state-wide and on tour
Hannah Abercrombie OMEA 2nd Vice President
Hannah Abercrombie is an enthusiastic and dedicated music educator in her 2nd year as the Director of Choirs at McKay High School in Salem, Oregon, where she directs four choirs, the nationally acclaimed a cappella group, Scots-Appella, and is the assistant director of the McKay Marching Band
After receiving her Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the University of Oregon, Hannah started her career at Douglas High School in Winston, Oregon, where she taught band and choir for six years During her time in southern
Oregon, she led her bands and choirs to top placings in state championships, revived the marching band and color guard after a 30-year hiatus, planned, coordinated, and hosted district competitions and honor events, and served as Vice President for OMEA District 10
Hannah is excited to be a part of the OMEA leadership team and is eager to seek out inspiring experiences and opportunities to further enrich music educators in Oregon . She wants to ensure that the OMEA Conference experience is revitalizing and worthwhile for educators of all ages, backgrounds, and specialties
Outside of work, Hannah loves spending time with her fiancé, Andrew, and snuggling with her two kitties, Meelo and Momo. She has enjoyed getting to teach in her hometown of Salem and feels grateful to be in such an amazing community of people and music
Ben Lawson, OMEA Past President
Ben Lawson is the Band and Choir Director at Redmond High School in Redmond, Oregon Ben holds a BA in Instrumental Conducting and a MAT in Music Education from Oregon State University. Since his first year teaching he has been an active member of the Oregon Music Education Association, serving as chairs for over 25 festivals at the district level, two years on the State Executive board as 2nd Vice President and Conference Chair of the 2011 as well as conference chair for the 2022 conference He has served four years as the All-State Jazz Band Manager and eight years as the All-NW Band Manager Currently Ben is the Past-President of the Oregon Music Education Association. He is a certified OBDA/OSAA band adjudicator and is on staff with the Oregon Ambassadors of Music
Elizabeth Soper, OMEA Conference Chair
Elizabeth Soper directs the choir program at Medford High School in southern Oregon Elizabeth graduated summa cum laude from the University of Oregon with degrees in Music Education, Music Performance (Flute), and a minor in Nonprofit Management. One of her main passions is to cultivate musical opportunities for students in her community and throughout the state within both public schools and local nonprofits Elizabeth has served as the collegiate volunteer coordinator or transportation manager for the 2020, 2022, and 2023 OMEA State Conferences
Elizabeth would like to create conferences that give equal focus to all content areas as well as differentiated sessions for novice and experienced teachers
Kristi Stingle, OMEA All-State Chair
Kristi Stingle is the Orchestra Director at Lakeridge Middle and High School in Lake Oswego, where she has taught since 2016 Kristi enjoys being an active member of OMEA, and served as the 2nd Vice-President from 2019-2021 and as High School All-State Orchestra Co-Manager from 2018 – 2023 She also chaired the Wisconsin High School State Honors Music Project (WSMA All-State) from 2012 to 2015, and was the WSMA High School Orchestra Coordinator and String Bass coach from 2006 to 2010 . A graduate of the University of WisconsinMadison and Interlochen, Stingle has been teaching since 2001 and has been honored by the Civic Music Association of Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 2005 for Excellence in Teaching, and was Neenah High School’s Teacher of the Year in 2016
Laura Arthur, OMEA Public Policy Chair
Laura Arthur is a veteran music educator and dedicated arts advocate . She currently works as a substitute educator in music classrooms in the Portland Metro area, and serves as an instructional coach, adjudicator, clinician, conductor, and sectional coach across Oregon
From 2019-2024, Laura served as the K-12 Music Teacher On Special Assignment (TOSA) for Portland Public Schools in Portland, Oregon In her TOSA role, she supported all music programs at the district level through arts advocacy, creating and delivering professional development, curating curriculum, coordinating events, and instructional coaching Before becoming a part of the PPS Visual and Performing Arts team, she ran a successful middle school music program for 12 years, directing concert and jazz band ensembles along with teaching orchestra, guitar, percussion, and general music classes
In her role as Public Policy Chair, Laura coordinates and leads action related to advocacy with stakeholders on behalf of OMEA . She has presented at local, state,
and national conferences around beginning band pedagogy, literature selection, and arts advocacy She regularly performs on bass clarinet and bari sax, and is a graduate of the University of Oregon (B Mus, Music Education) and Portland State University (M Ed)
Laura is a steadfast advocate for equity, and believes that a comprehensive and high-quality music education can, and should, be accessible to ALL students . In her free time, she enjoys hiking, baking, comics, trivia, and time with family.
Todd Zimbelman, OMEA Treasurer
Todd Zimbelman is the Executive Officer and Band Director for Oregon Ambassadors of Music He also holds the position of Director of Bands and Co-Director of the Symphony Orchestra at West Salem High School in the Salem-Keizer School District (OR) Mr Zimbelman has held Director of Bands and Associate Director of Bands positions at the high school and college levels in Oregon and Texas He holds bachelor and master of music degrees from the University of Oregon
The West Salem Wind Ensemble has performed at several national and international music festivals and conferences Some highlights include the Oregon Music Education Association State Conference, NAfME Northwest Convention, Western International Band Clinic, and the Pacific Basin International Music Festival in Honolulu, Hawaii. The West Salem Wind Ensemble has placed 1st in the OSAA State Band Contest several times Jazz Bands and Marching Band have also placed among the top in their divisions Students under his direction are regularly selected for honor bands at All-City, All-State, All-Northwest, and the state OMEA Chamber Ensemble and OSAA State Solo contests
Arrangements and compositions by Mr Zimbelman have been performed internationally His Winds Technique Books I and II are used by several programs across the United States. He is an active adjudicator and clinician. He is a member of the American Bandmasters Association, College Band Directors National Association, National Association for Music Educators, National Band Association, Oregon Band Director’s Association, Oregon Music Education Association, and Phi Beta Mu Mr Zimbelman is currently the Treasurer of the Oregon Music Education Association

Robert Gillespie, Conductor
Robert Gillespie, violinist and professor, was responsible for string teacher training in the School of Music until his retirement Ohio State has one of the largest and most extensive string pedagogy degree programs in the nation Under Gillespie’s leadership, Ohio State received the 2015 ASTA Institutional Leadership Award as the premier string education university in the country
Gillespie is a past national President of the American String Teachers Association . He is a frequent guest conductor of All-State, region and festival orchestras Gillespie has appeared in 47 states, Canada, Asia and throughout Europe He is co-author of the Hal Leonard string method book series, Essential Elements for Strings, the leading string instrument teaching series in the country with sales of over ten million copies Also, he is co-author of the college text Strategies for Teaching Strings: Building A Successful School Orchestra Program, the String Clinics to Go DVD series, and the Teaching Music Through Performance in Orchestra texts for GIA publications He received the Distinguished Scholar award for 2002–2003 in the School of Music at Ohio State University
In summers, Gillespie directs the Ohio State String Teacher Workshop, the largest string/orchestra teacher-training workshop in the country In Columbus, he has conducted the Columbus Symphony Chamber Strings Youth Orchestra and performed in the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra Gillespie has given string pedagogy and research presentations, and conducted orchestra performances in Ohio, Maine, Louisiana, Virginia, Georgia, Maryland, Alabama, Missouri, Wyoming, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Florida and Oregon He has worked with students and teachers throughout the United States, including a 9-day teaching residency in Switzerland In addition, he has conducted concerts in LA’s Walt Disney Concert Hall and Chicago’s Orchestra Hall .
Mac Mayer, Ensemble Co-Manager
Mac Mayer is Orchestra Director at Whiteaker Middle School and feeder elementary schools in Keizer, Oregon . He holds undergraduate degrees in Music Performance and Music Education from The Ohio State University and Master of Music Education from University of Kansas Prior to teaching in the Salem-Keizer School District Mr Mayer taught orchestra in Olathe, Kansas, as well as communities in Georgia and Ohio .
Mr. Mayer is a certified orchestra adjudicator in the state of Oregon, and works frequently as an adjudicator, clinician, and conductor across the state and region. Mr. Mayer is conductor of Amadeus Players, a string preparatory orchestra with Salem Youth Symphony .
Mr Mayer is married to Brigid Mayer, Orchestra Director at West Salem High School in Salem, Oregon Mr Mayer’s children have participated in OMEA Honor Ensembles ensembles since 2016, including his middle son who was as a four year member of OMEA High School All-State Orchestra on violin He is grateful for the multitude of musical opportunities provided by Oregon Music Educators Association

Myriam Gendron-Dupont, Ensemble Co-Manager
Myriam is the Orchestra Director at Rosemont Ridge Middle School in the West-Linn-Wilsonville School District She is a native French speaker from Quebec, Canada and is certified to teach Music and French Myriam is a lifelong cellist and always knew she would follow a career path embedded in the music world She attended Portland State University on a full scholarship and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music and a Masters in Education She obtained her teaching license and has worked over 18 years in the public education system, teaching elementary general music, choir and orchestra, as well as middle school
choir, orchestra, band, guitar and French She recently earned a second Masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction from PSU
Myriam is a certified Orchestra adjudicator for the state of Oregon. She co-manages two honor ensembles: the OMEA MS All-State Orchestra and the District 14 MS Honor Orchestra She has also served as District 14 Chair for OMEA and is now the secretary for the Oregon ASTA board
Myriam teaches middle school orchestra and band, private lessons on the cello, and performs with the Tilikum Chamber Orchestra She lives in Oregon City with her husband James Their grown only daughter Isabelle lives on her own in Happy Valley

Robert Tyrome Herrings, III, Conductor
Robert Tyrome Herrings, III is in his twenty-second year of teaching and has been teaching in Leander ISD since 2004 Prior to his appointment as Director of Bands at Vista Ridge HIgh School, he was the Director of Bands at Artie Henry Middle School from 2004-2024
In 2003, Mr Herrings received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Baylor University in Waco, Texas, where he studied under Michael Haithcock, Jeff Grogan, Dr Kevin Sedatole and Barry Hopper While in college, Mr Herrings was a member of the Baylor University performing wind bands, as well as a member of the Baylor University Golden Wave Band .
During his twenty years at Artie Henry Middle School, the Henry Middle School Honors Band was selected to perform at the 2008 and 2013 Western International Band Clinic in Seattle, Washington The program was named the 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2024 TMEA Class CCC Honor Band and was also selected to perform at the 2010, 2012, 2016 and 2022 Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic In June 2011, Mr Herrings and the program were awarded the prestigious John Philip Sousa Foundation Sudler Silver Cup Award, and in July of the same year, Mr Herrings
was named the Phi Beta Mu Outstanding Young Bandmaster of the Year In May of 2014, the Texas Chapter of the American School Band Directors Association awarded the Outstanding Band Program Award to the Artie Henry MS Band Program, and in November of the same year, the Henry MS Percussion Ensemble was selected to perform at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana In 2018, the Henry MS Band Program was selected as the Texas Bandmasters Association Exemplary Middle School Band Award winner, and the program at Henry MS was named the National Band Association’s Programs of Excellence Blue Ribbon Band Award winner Most recently, the program at Vista Ridge High School has been invited to perform at the 2025 Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic . An active clinician and adjudicator around the state, Mr. Herrings is a member of the Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, Texas Music Adjudicators Association, American Bandmasters Association as well as an educational consultant for the Conn-Selmer Division of Education Mr Herrings also serves as the Vice President of Phi Beta Mu Alpha Chapter, TMEA Region 32 Band Division Vice President, as well as the Region 32 TBA representative Most recently, Mr Herrings was inducted into the Conn-Selmer Institute Hall of Fame Mr. Herrings enjoys motivating young musicians to achieve the highest level of performance by sharing his extreme love and passion for music with them on a daily basis He feels honored, privileged and extremely blessed to have a loving mother and grandmother, many great mentors, band directors and close friends who have influenced his career thus far.
Above all, his students have been his greatest inspiration!

Ann McBride has been teaching instrumental music for 30 years in Oregon and Minnesota She holds a B S in Music Education from Minnesota State University - Moorhead and a Master’s Degree in Education from Lesley University She has served as secretary of OMEA District II and is currently a co-manager for the OMEA All State Middle School Band . Ann has been active in organizing band and solo festivals for OMEA District 2 and has recently begun working as a clinician and guest conductor for area festivals and honor bands She has also worked extensively on band curriculum and assessment for the GreshamBarlow School District Ann is currently in her 24th year teaching band and world music at West Orient Middle School in Gresham, Oregon . When Ann is not teaching, you will find her running, hiking and taking adventures with her Australian cattle dog, Riley Ann and her husband John love to travel around the country and the world They are self-proclaimed foodies and are always on the hunt for their next amazing meal. When she is home, she enjoys time with her cats and researching the next travel adventure
Jenna Gagne, Ensemble Co-Manager
Jenna Gagne lives in Happy Valley, OR, and is in her seventh year as Director of Bands at Gordon Russell Middle School and 14th year in the Gresham-Barlow School District, where she teaches Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced Bands, Jazz Band, and a world music class. Recently, Mrs. Gagne joined the Sam Barlow Theatre team as the Pit Orchestra Director, with her first show being The Wizard of Oz in 2023
Mrs . Gagne graduated from Oregon State University with a Bachelor of Music degree in 2011 and a Master of Arts in Teaching degree in 2012
In addition to teaching at Northwest Band Camps, and Mid-Valley Band Camps, Mrs Gagne also organizes band festivals and other music events, in addition to her years of assisting in the managing of the Oregon Middle School All State Band . Mrs. Gagne also strives to keep up her flute and piccolo chops by playing as often as she can, including playing in the Tabor Wind Ensemble
When Mrs. Gagne is not involved in her musical endeavors, you will find her snowboarding with her husband Justin on the slopes of Mt Hood, paddle-boarding and hiking throughout the Northwest, enjoying time on the Coast, loving on her Shar-Pei Husky Archie, and heading back to her native Canada as often as possible

Dr Julie Yu (She/Her/Hers) is Professor of Music and Director of Choral Studies at the Wanda L Bass School of Music at Oklahoma City University and the Artistic Director of Canterbury Voices She holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education from the University of Central Oklahoma, a Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting from Oklahoma State University, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Choral Conducting from the University of North Texas Before joining OCU and Canterbury Voices, she taught at Norman North High School in Oklahoma, San José State University, and Kansas State University. She has given presentations and conducted, and/or her choirs have performed for state and regional conferences of the American Choral Directors Association, National Association for Music Education, DoDEA Europe Honors Music Festival, and the European Music Educators Association She is a past president of the Southwestern Region of the American Choral Directors Association and served as an International Conducting Exchange Fellow to Kenya
Her favorite area of research and performance is working as a guest clinician/ conductor for various honor choirs and professional organizations
Suvi Mirka, Ensemble Co-Manager
Suvi Mirka is a choral director at Gordon Russell Middle School in Gresham-Barlow School District She received her undergraduate degree from George Fox University in Music Education, and then pursued her Masters at Portland State University Suvi is the OMEA All state treble choir manager, and has greatly enjoyed working to help our students have a wonderful experience at All-State
She is an active member of OMEA District 2 where she serves as the choir chair and festival coordinator Suvi sings in the Portland community at a number of different churches and alongside some singer songwriter friends
This will be her eighth year as Director of choirs at Gordon Russell Middle School and in Gresham-Barlow School District At Gordon Russell she teaches 2 sections of 6th grade choir, Intermediate choir, Concert Choir (Advanced), Jazz choir (select students in advanced choir), and leadership She is fortunate to work within supportive systems that allow students to be a part of multiple choir classes and give our musicians a variety of opportunities
At Gordon Russell she gets the privilege to work alongside some amazing choir director friends that make working at GRMS even better! She is lucky to work in a community of collaboration and community .
When Ms. Mirka is not involved in her musical endeavors, you will find her tearing up the pickleball courts, enjoying Portland’s best coffee, spending time with her cat Joe, and listening to live music
Melinda Murdock, Ensemble Co-Manager
Melinda Murdock is in her 24th year teaching choral studies at Jackson Middle School in Portland, Oregon She has earned degrees from Nova Southeastern University (M .A .) and Idaho State University (B A) While attending ISU, she studied choral conducting with Dr Scott Anderson and participated in numerous international choral tours, including England, Central Europe, Italy, Greece, and Brazil She also worked with the late Weston Noble, in Idaho and Brazil, as a model for correct choral technique . Except for the two pandemic years, her auditioned Ensemble Choir has participated the past 21 years in Worldstrides Heritage Festivals, including nine times in their Festival of Gold in New York City, Washington D C , and Nashville This past March, Melinda conducted the Ensemble as they made their Carnegie Hall debut, when they were selected to perform as the featured choir at the WorldStrides Festival at Carnegie Hall: National Youth Choir with Dr Brandon Boyd
Her Concert Choir performed at the Oregon All-State convention in 2020, and they have consistently ranked in the top five at the Best in the Northwest Choral Festival, as well as consistently receiving “Superior” ratings at festivals
As a co-manager for the OMEA All-State MS Treble Choir, Melinda, along with Suvi Mirka, has had the privilege of acquiring some of the most respected conductors in the field, including Dr. Amy Voorhees, Dr. Angela Kasper, and Grammy-Award winner, Dr Jeffrey Redding
In demand as a clinician and adjudicator, Melinda was also nominated for the prestigious Oregon Music Educator of the Year award (2006) and was named Teacher of the Year by the Portland Parent Teacher Association (2007) . Melinda is a trained classical singer and maintains a vocal studio, with her students often ranking in the top ten at the state level She strives to instill in her students a lifelong love of music
Angela Hjertstedt, Accompanist
Angela Hjertstedt was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. She entered an undergraduate degree in Vocal Performance from Portland State University, followed by a Master’s degree in Education, also at PSU
She won the “Young Artists: Live at the Schnitz” competition, soloing with members of the Oregon Symphony, as well as the collegiate level of the National Association of Teachers in Singing (NATS) competition in Oregon . She continues to perform frequently as a vocalist and pianist around the Portland area, and sang with the professional group “Choro in Scuola” for 6 years She is also frequently hired to accompany soloists and choirs around the state She has taught private voice and piano lessons for over 20 years, as well as been involved in church music ministry at local and regional levels . She is an active member of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) as well as the Oregon Music Educators Association (OMEA)
Angela now teaches Middle School choir, and her choirs have won many accolades under her direction . She lives in Happy Valley, Oregon with her husband and two teenage sons

Daniel Gutierrez directs choirs at Nixa High and Nixa Junior High Schools, and is an active conductor, clinician and presenter throughout the country He was named Teacher of the Year for Springfield Public Schools and Southwest Missouri, as well as a finalist for the state TOTY award. Daniel also received the Springfield Rotary Award for Outstanding Community Service, was an honoree for the Springfield Business Journal’s 40 Under 40, semifinalist for the GRAMMY National Music Educator Award, and 2-time recipient of the Missouri Choral Directors Association Podium Award
Daniel has presented for TEDx, regional and national American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) conferences, and other choral workshops nationally His choral ensembles have won music festivals and have received numerous invitations to perform at the Missouri Music Educator Association Conference, Southwest American Choral Directors Association Conference, the National Conference for MS/JH Choral Music, and the National American Choral Directors Association Conference
Kristian Bumanlag, Ensemble Co-Manager
Born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, Kristian attended Pacific University where he obtained his Bachelors in Music Education While at Pacific, he performed with the Chamber Singers under the direction of Scott Tuomi
Currently, Kristian is in his fourth year of teaching choir He started his career at St Helens Middle School and is now at Five Oaks Middle School in Beaverton
Outside of teaching, Kristian performs for various other ensembles such as Portland Phoenix Choir and the MAC Balladeers He is currently singing with the Oregon Chorale under the direction of Jason Sabino
Kaeli Porter, Ensemble Co-Manager
Kaeli Porter is so excited to serve as co-manager for the TB choir this year! Kaeli teaches choir at Inza Wood and Meridian Creek Middle Schools in Wilsonville, Oregon A native Oregonian, her positive and enthusiastic teaching approach has seen her choirs achieve state and regional recognition, performing at the Oregon Music Educator’s Conference, the Northwest ACDA Conference, the Pacific International Choral Festival, and with the Oregon Symphony in their kids concert series
Beyond her teaching role, Kaeli provides vocal direction for the West Linn-Wilsonville Middle School Musical and serves as the Soprano Section Leader and Assistant Director at St Michael and All Angel’s Church in NE Portland She is also an active board member and alumna—both as a student and conductor—of the Pacific Youth Choir (PYC), an organization that shaped her passion She credits both her experiences at PYC and Portland’s own Cleveland High School with inspiring her to become a teacher

Cindy Mair retired in 2016 from a rewarding 36-year career teaching K-12 music in public education Her specialties included elementary classroom music in addition to middle and high school choral instruction An Oregon native, Cindy received her BA in Music Education from Oregon State University and later her master’s in administrative leadership from Concordia University . Her favorite assignment has always been that of a collaborative pianist She has accompanied many ensembles and soloists both at the local and state level Cindy

Ron Curtis, Conductor
Ron Curtis is a dedicated and passionate music educator with over three decades of experience inspiring students through choral music He holds a Master of Music Education from Boise State University and a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Music Education from Northwest Nazarene University
Ron began his teaching career in 1994 in Melba, Idaho, and went on to teach choir and elementary music in the Boise School District Starting in 1999, he served as the choir director in the Vallivue School District, first at Vallivue and then at Ridgevue High Schools Currently, Ron is the Director of Choral Activities at Northwest Nazarene University (NNU) . A tireless advocate for music education, Ron has held several leadership roles in the Idaho Music Educators Association (IMEA), including President (2009–2011), and continues to serve as the IMEA All-State Manager
Ron’s commitment to excellence has earned him numerous honors, including IMEA Teacher of the Year (2023), Ridgevue High School Teacher of the Year (2019), and the Idaho NFHS State Music award (2024) His ensembles consistently receive superior

Beyond the classroom, Ron has served as a mentor to numerous student teachers and continues to shape the next generation of educators—including two of his own children, Bradley and Maddie, who are proudly following in his footsteps as music educators . John Hillan-Payne, Co-Ensemble Manager
John Hillan-Payne is delighted to be co-manager of the 2026 OMEA Elementary All-State Choir With 20+ years of directing children’s choirs, teaching classroom music, and presenting teacher workshops, he seeks to instill in students a lifelong passion for music through fun and rigorous experiences in singing songs and games, playing instruments, and movement He graduated from the University of Missouri- Kansas City Conservatory of Music with a Bachelor of Music Education degree (2004) and earned a Master’s in Teaching degree from Portland State University (2009) Further trainings include Orff-Schulwerk and Kodály philosophies, as well as National Board Certification. In 2016, he was the recipient of the OMEA Outstanding Music Educator award He works to strengthen music education in Oregon by serving on several boards and committees; he is a Past President of Southern Washington and Oregon Kodály Educators (SWOKE) and has been Elementary Chair for the Oregon Music Education Association Mr Hillan-Payne has taught in the West Linn-Wilsonville School District since 2004, and is currently the music teacher at Lowrie Primary School and director of Wilsonville Choral Arts Society’s community choirs

Allison Hedgepeth has taught elementary music for 24 years in Kansas, California, and Oregon For the last 19 years she has been teaching at Forest Hills Elementary in Lake Oswego, OR Allison graduated from Kansas State with a Bachelors of Music Education and Portland State University with a Masters of Music in Education. Pianist, vocalist, and composer Dawn Clement is a joyful and formidable force in the landscape of modern creative music For over two decades, Clement has served as both a torchbearer of the jazz tradition and as a trailblazer in fresh sonic explorations. “In all this world of jazz, there are very few individual voices, no matter what the instrument, but Dawn has come up with a voice that’s unique...” says legendary jazz trombonist Julian Priester. Clement’s original music is an expansive collection that features her distinctive musical voice in a variety of genres, styles, and settings Her six albums as a leader showcase her impressive range from master of the jazz piano trio style, to avant garde improviser, to indie-influenced songwriter. Downbeat says, “The revelation is Dawn Clement’s piano, always ready with the lyricism or structure the moment needs .” Clement shines as a collaborator and is in high demand as a touring and recording artist. She has previously performed with jazz luminaries including Jane Ira Bloom, Ron Miles, Rene Marie, and Ingrid Jensen. Dawn recorded with säje on their GRAMMYnominated debut album, and is currently touring with säje and Matt Wilson’s Good
Trouble. Clement has been busy with several exciting projects, including the third release by Esthesis Quartet, featuring Bill Frisell (May 9, 2025 *sunnyside), and a trio project with Buster Williams and Matt Wilson (July 18, 2025 *origin).
Integral in Clement’s relationship with music is her role as an educator and mentor She currently serves as Associate Professor and Area Coordinator of the Jazz and American Improvised Music Department at Metropolitan State University of Denver . In addition, Clement is a sought-after guest artist and clinician for jazz festivals. Most recently Clement was appointed the Artistic Director of the Centrum Jazz Workshop, taking over for the legendary bassist John Clayton Dawn holds a Bachelor of Music from Cornish College of the Arts and a Masters of FineArts in Music Composition from Vermont College of the Arts Originally from the Pacific Northwest, she now lives in Denver, Colorado, and maintains strong ties to both the Seattle and Denver music communities

Cory Francis is the Associate Director of Bands at West Salem High School in Salem, OR . He directs the marching band, jazz ensembles, and co-teaches the concert ensembles of the program He also teaches beginning band at Brush College Elementary School in Salem, OR
Cory is in his 6th year as an educator and 4th year as co-manager of the OMEA All-State Jazz Band
Tristan Weitkamp, Ensemble Co-Manager
Tristan Weitkamp is currently a band director at Sherwood High School and coordinates the jazz ensemble activities for the Sherwood School District Tristan previously served as the Interim Director of Bands and Visiting Instructor of Music at Portland State University He holds a Master’s in Music: Instrumental Conducting and a Master’s of Education, as well as a Bachelor’s in Jazz Studies, from Portland State University He also completed post-bachelorate studies in music and global affairs at the University of Cape Town in South Africa . During his time abroad, Tristan performed with notable South African musicians Dizu Plaatjies and Tony Cedras and recorded his first record, “Flash in the Pan,” with his New Horizons Ensemble Tristan currently co-manages a big band with saxophonist Nathanael Ankeny and directs the Providence Hospital Stage Band He has also founded Sherwood Summer Jazz, a new summer jazz camp and festival based in Sherwood, Oregon .

Alongside her role as Music Director of the La Porte County Symphony Orchestra, Carolyn Watson is Principal Guest Conductor of the Kansas City Chamber Orchestra Originally from Australia, Carolyn has been based in the United States since 2013 during which time she has led performances with the Amarillo Opera, Austin Symphony, Cape Symphony, Catskill Symphony, Columbus Indiana Philharmonic, Des Moines Metro Opera, Dallas Opera, Detroit Symphony Civic Orchestra, Kansas City Ballet, Lyric Opera of Kansas City, South Bend Symphony Orchestra, St Joseph Symphony, Traverse Symphony Orchestra, and Tulsa Opera An experienced conductor of opera, in 2020 she conducted ‘And Still we Dream’ for the Lyric Opera of Kansas City, and was featured in the Emmy-Award winning PBS documentary, Higher Octaves: Leading Women in the Arts A committed music educator, Carolyn currently serves as Director of Orchestras at the University of Illinois whilst continuing to enjoy an active professional career. In 2021 she was named a finalist in the Arts category of the Australian government Advance Awards, an international award which recognizes leading global Australians of excellence Carolyn is an advocate for social justice with respect to equality and representation in the profession She is a founding member of the Women and Allies Initiative of the College Orchestra Directors Association and has been a mentor for the Women’s Artistic Leadership Initiative and Girls Who Conduct . She holds a PhD in Performance (Conducting) from the University of Sydney where she studied under Imre Palló
Kevin Rouse, Ensemble Co-Manager
Kevin Rouse is a graduate of the University of Maryland, where he received a degree in music education As a bass trombonist, he studied under Matthew Guilford, the bass trombonist for the National Symphony Orchestra . Rouse received his masters through American Band College
Rouse is the instrumental music director at Lake Oswego High School in Lake Oswego, Oregon Previously, he was the director at Thomas S . Wootton High School in Rockville, Maryland (2014 - 2018), and Northwest High School in Germantown, Maryland (2006 – 2014) His bands and orchestras have received consistent superior ratings at county and state festivals
Mr Rouse’s marching bands, symphonic bands, and orchestras have also received multiple awards in Florida, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland
Rouse has a thriving trombone/baritone studio. He also adjudicated solo and ensemble festivals in several counties in Maryland and is a judge for the marching band circuit, NWAPA
He has enjoyed composing and arranging for his marching band and other schools around the country He has composed for small ensembles and marching bands for the past 11 years His music has won many “best music” awards for marching bands In 2017, the music he composed for Thomas S Wootton High School won “best music” at the group 3A Maryland state competition and the US Bands National Championship . His music for Northwest High School also won “best music” at the Maryland state competition in the 2A group
Lesslie Nunez, Ensemble Co-Manager
Lesslie Nuñez has been a music educator in the Forest Grove School District since 2015 She has been instrumental in expanding the Strings program across grades 5–12 and founded the district’s award-winning Mariachi program She currently teaches full time at Forest Grove High School, where she directs and teaches orchestra, mariachi, and guitar classes
Ms Nuñez holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the University of Oregon, where she studied violin under Fritz Gearhart, and a Master of Science in Educational Leadership and Policy with a focus on Leadership for Sustainability Education . Dr Emily Moss, Conductor
Dr Emily Moss serves as Professor of Music and Director of Bands at the University of New Mexico where she conducts the Wind Symphony, oversees the graduate conducting program, and teaches other courses in conducting and wind literature
Her previous position at California State University, Los Angeles (2011-2023) included conducting the Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band, teaching undergraduate and graduate conducting and music education courses, and administering the instrumental music education program . She also held a similar position at the Conservatory of Music at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York
Originally from the Pacific Northwest, Dr. Moss began her collegiate music studies at the University of Washington in Seattle, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education After teaching middle school band for six years in both Washington and Arizona, Dr Moss served as a teaching assistant with the University Bands at the University of Northern Colorado, earning her Master’s degree in Wind Conducting and the Doctor of Arts in Music Education and Bassoon Performance, studying with Kenneth Singleton, Richard Mayne, and Charles Hanson .
As a conductor and clinician, Dr Moss is in high demand across North America and regularly gives band clinics at middle and high schools in her local area and beyond She is also an accomplished bassoonist, actively performing during her degree programs in Washington and Colorado, with the Conservatory Orchestra and other ensembles at Brooklyn College, and for student and faculty recitals at Cal State LA Dr Moss has presented at conferences across the United States on a variety of topics and is a contributor to the esteemed Teaching Music through Performance in Band series She recently wrote a chapter for the book Women in Wind Band, titled “Defining and Redefining Success,” and the book is available through GIA Publications. Her professional memberships include College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA), World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE) where she serves on the Board of Directors, and New Mexico Music Educators Association She resides in Albuquerque, New Mexico with her husband Noah and their two daughters, Ella and Sadie
Daniel Hartley, Ensemble Co-Manager
Daniel is in his twelfth year of teaching high school band and is currently teaching at Lakeridge High School in Lake Oswego where he also serves as the Secondary Music Coordinator for Lake Oswego School District Prior to teaching at Lakeridge, Daniel taught for seven years at Kelso High School in Kelso, WA and served as the District Music Coordinator for Kelso School District and the President of the Southwest Washington Music Educators Association (SWWMEA) In 2017 he was named Secondary Teacher of the Year for Kelso School District
In his free time Daniel plays Principal Trombone and serves on the board of the Portland Wind Symphony and also serves on the board for the non-profit: LO for Love He is also the President-Elect of the Oregon Band Directors Association (OBDA) and manages the OMEA All-State Symphonic Band He earned his Bachelor and Masters degrees in Music Education from University of Oregon He lives with his husband, André, and two cats, Gizmo and Gadget, in SE Portland.

Seth Arnold graduated with a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the University of Oregon and earned his Master of Music Education from Central Washington University through the American Band College. He currently leads five performing ensembles in the Gladstone School District, where he teaches students from 6th through 12th grade . Timothy Salzman, Conductor
Timothy Salzman is Professor Emeritus at the University of Washington where he served as Professor of Music and Director of Concert Bands, conductor of the University Wind Ensemble, and taught students enrolled in the graduate instrumental conducting program Former graduate wind conducting students of Professor Salzman have obtained positions at 73 universities and colleges throughout the United States and include past presidents of the American Bandmasters Association and the College Band Directors National Association Prior to his UW appointment, he served as Director of Bands at Montana State University where he founded the MSU Wind Ensemble From 1978 to 1983 he was band director in the Herscher, Illinois, public school system where the band program received regional and national awards in solo/ ensemble, concert and marching band competition
Dr Salzman holds degrees from Wheaton College and Northern Illinois University and studied privately with world-renowned wind instrument pedagogue Arnold Jacobs, former tubist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra . He has numerous publications for bands with the C L Barnhouse, Arranger’s Publications, Columbia Pictures, Hal Leonard Publishing, and Nihon Pals publishing companies, and he has served on the staff of new music reviews for The Instrumentalist magazine Professor Salzman has been a conductor, adjudicator, arranger, or consultant for bands throughout the
United States and in Canada, England, France, Russia, South Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, the Philippines, China, and Japan, a country he has visited 21 times Recently, he has frequently traveled to China where he served as visiting professor at the China Conservatory, given master classes for numerous wind bands, and conducted several ensembles in concert including the Shanghai Wind Orchestra, the People’s Liberation Army Band, the Beijing Wind Orchestra, and the Tsinghua University Band. He also served on three occasions as an adjudicator for the Singapore Youth Festival National Concert Band Championships He has also conducted several of the major military bands in the United States including a 2019 world premiere with “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band .
Frank Petrik, Ensemble Co-Manager
Frank Petrik is a music educator, conductor, and saxophonist with more than 27 years of experience teaching and directing bands in Oregon public schools He currently serves as the Director of Bands at Lincoln High School in Portland, where he leads a student-centered program focused on musicianship, collaboration, and community Frank also serves as President of the Oregon Band Directors Association (OBDA), helping guide statewide initiatives and events that support music educators and students across Oregon Over the years, he has worked as a clinician, conductor, and adjudicator for schools throughout the region and remains active as a state-certified adjudicator for concert and festival performances.
A dedicated mentor with Leaders Creating Leaders, Frank enjoys supporting emerging teachers and student leaders in developing their confidence, skills, and sense of purpose He has performed and served as staff with the Oregon Ambassadors of Music European Tour, sharing music with audiences across Europe Originally from Montana, Frank enjoys spending time outdoors—hiking, trail running, fly fishing, and photography—and traveling with his wife. Their love of travel was inspired by David and Kathy Becker and their life-changing experiences through the Oregon Ambassadors of Music Europe Trip Frank believes deeply in the power of music to bring people together, bridge cultures, and share the human experience across the world
Kevin Soon, Ensemble Co-Manager
Kevin Soon has served as the Director of Instrumental Music at Liberty High School in Hillsboro since 2007 He also teaches beginning band at W Verne McKinney Elementary School Prior to his appointment at Liberty, he taught band and choir in the
public schools of Cave Junction, Oregon He holds a Master of Arts in Teaching degree from Western Oregon University and a Bachelor of Science in Music degree from the University of Oregon He has proudly served as the Music Director of the Tualatin Valley Community Band since 2015
Mr Soon is a member of the National Association for Music Education, Oregon Music Education Association and the Oregon Band Directors Association . He has served on the board of the Oregon Music Education Association and as President of the Northwest Association for the Performing Arts He lives in Portland with his wife and three children

Cari Earnhart serves as the Director of Choral Activities at California State University, Fresno, where she conducts the top choral ensembles and teaches graduate conducting The Fresno State Choirs maintain an active performing profile. In 2022, under her direction, the Fresno State Concert Choir was selected to perform at the California All-State Music Educators Conference (CASMEC), and in April 2017, the Fresno State Chamber Singers were invited to perform at the Library of Congress to honor the 21st US Poet Laureate, Juan Felipe Herrera In 2024, she made her conducting debut at Carnegie Hall with National Concerts Earnhart is active as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator and has worked with choirs throughout the US and abroad Internationally, she served as DCA at the American University of Sharjah in the UAE and as artistic director of Nassim al Saba, an Arabic choral music ensemble She has been a guest conductor with the Budapesti
Vándor Kórus, and the Istanbul International Chamber Choir; she served as Maestro of Ensemble Vocale Tempus Floridum and as Maestro Collaboratore of Coro dell’ Accademia del Diletto and Coro Polofonico del Caricentro, all in Florence She frequently presents workshops on Arabic choral music, vocal pedagogy, and conducting . Dr Earnhart is meaningfully engaged with organizations at the state, regional, and national levels From 2016-2020, she served on the ACDA Western Region Board as R & R Repertoire Specific Chair and Conference Chair for the Western Region Conferences in 2022 and 2024 In 2025, she served as Interest Session Chair for the National ACDA Conference and as a co-chair for the Indigenous People’s Immersion Choir for the 2023 National Conference She currently serves as the Interest Session Chair for the 2027 ACDA National Conference, as the 2026 Western Region ACDA Conference Chair, as Education and Student Outreach Director on the California Choral Directors Association Board (CCDA), and as President of the Fresno Madera Counties Music Educators Association (FMCMEA) Board of Directors
She holds BM and MM degrees in Vocal Performance/Pedagogy from Oklahoma State University and a DMA in Choral Conducting from the University of North Texas
Belinda Sisson, Ensemble Co-Manager
Belinda Sisson is the Director of Choirs at Ridgeview High School in Redmond, Oregon She has her Master’s Degree in Art and Teaching and her Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from the College of Liberal Arts at Oregon State University She has served as the Collegiate NAfME representative on the Board of the Oregon Music Educators Association Her favorite part about being a Choir Director is getting to see the joy that singing brings to each of the students and watching them make lifelong friendships

Katey Simmons (they/them) is the Director of Choirs at Franklin High School and the Associate Director of the Oregon Repertory Singers Youth Choir in Portland, OR Under their direction, Franklin High School choral students have participated in the State Small Ensemble, State Solo, and OSAA State Choir competitions Being an active member of NAfME and ACDA, Simmons was honored as OR ACDA’s Emerging Conductor in 2025 Simmons earned Bachelor of Arts in Music and Masters of Arts in Teaching degrees summa cum laude from Oregon State University, where they were recognized as the College of Liberal Arts Outstanding Senior in 2020
Lauren Servias, Accompanist
Lauren Servias has performed with Tacoma Opera, the Oregon Festival of American Music, Eugene Ballet, Cascadia Concert Opera, Northwest Opera In Schools Etc (NOISE), Lark Opera, and Seattle Civic Dance Theatre, among other performing arts organizations Servias taught on the Oregon State University music faculty from 2012 to 2021, serving as the music director for OSU Opera, instructor of group piano and accompanying, and pianist for Bella Voce and the Corvallis-OSU Symphony. She now is an in-demand freelance pianist, adjudicator, and lecturer Servias holds a Master of Music degree in Collaborative Piano Performance from the University of Oregon and a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance from Central Washington University

Musical Arts from the University of Missouri–Kansas City Her choirs have performed at the Missouri, Kansas, and Wisconsin Music Educators Association conventions, as well as the 2008 and 2018 Southwestern ACDA conferences Under her leadership, the UW–Madison Concert Choir was selected to perform at the 2025 ACDA National Conference in Dallas, TX, and recently received The American Prize for Best Choral Performance (2024) in the large collegiate choir category Dr Farah’s research centers on Brazilian choral music, particularly the a cappella works of Ernani Aguiar (b 1950) She is dedicated to bringing Brazilian choral works to U S audiences through performances, recordings, and publications An active clinician, she leads festivals and workshops in Brazil and across the U S , presenting at NAfME, ACDA, and NCCO national conferences Recent engagements include conducting the 2026 Oregon High School All State 10-12 Choir, the 2025 WSMA High School State Honors Choir, the 2024 Badger Honor Choir Conference, and the 2023 European Tour with the Wisconsin All Stars of Music, among others
A respected leader in the choral profession, Dr . Farah serves on the National Collegiate Choral Organization board She previously held leadership roles in ACDA Southwestern Division, including President-Elect (2018–2020) and Repertoire and Resources Chair for Ethnic and Multicultural Perspectives (2014–2018) Her commitment to choral excellence, research, and mentorship continues to shape the next generation of conductors and enrich the choral community worldwide
Josh Weir, Ensemble Co-Manager
Joshua Weir is the Director of choirs at Kraxberger Middle School and Gladstone High School He earned his bachelor of Music Education from Warner Pacific University and his Master of Music in Choral Conducting from Portland State University Mr Weir’s middle school choirs have won awards from the music in the parks program and his high school choir made it to the Oregon State Choir Championships in 2019 Mr Weir’s Jazz Choir has also won numerous CCC Vocal Jazz Festival awards Outside of teaching Mr Weir sings in the Oregon Repertory Singers and is the associate conductor for Unistus Chamber Choir During his tenure as Assistant Conductor, he has had the opportunity to travel to numerous US cities for the West Coast Estonian Days He has traveled twice to Estonian to participate in Laulupidu (Song Party) where he sang in a choir of 35,000 voices Mr Weir has also sung in the Portland Opera Chorus, Portland Symphonic Choir, and Novum Chamber Singers This is Mr Weir’s 5th year as a high school all-state group co-manager .

Luis Rivera serves as the choir director at Woodburn High School in Woodburn, Oregon, where he directs three ensembles: Bel Canto, the A Cappella Concert Choir, and the Chamber Choir Under his leadership, the Chamber Choir advanced to the OMEA
State Ensemble Competition, earning a third-place finish in 2024. Outside the classroom, Luis performs with In Medio, a Portland-based professional ensemble choir that will be featured at the 2025 NW ACDA Conference He is also an active soloist, performing throughout Oregon and collaborating with university ensembles as a featured guest artist
Naomi Morton, Accompanist
Naomi LaViolette is a composer, performer, singer-songwriter and versatile pianist based in Portland, Oregon She has a master’s degree in classical piano performance – but she has also immersed herself in the study of jazz standards, folk songs, soul, pop and gospel Naomi has released multiple singles and four records, most recently Live at The Old Church with Members of the Oregon Symphony, released February 2019 Her recordings have received great reviews and critical acclaim and she has performed at esteemed venues and festivals including the Carnegie Hall Weill Recital Hall, Portland Jazz Festival, Jimmy Mak’s, the Doug Fir Lounge, the Aladdin Theater and All Classical Portland Her work with Steven Goodwin and the Saving His Music project has received prominent coverage in national and local news, including CBS Sunday Morning
