Conductor

Carolyn Welch, Artistic Director of the Lawrence Children’s Choir, has been an integral part of LCC since 1996 and became Artistic Director in 2012 She oversees the artistic life of the 6-choir organization and directs the Ambassador Choir (grades 8-10), Tour Choir (grades 5-10), Choristers (grades 3-6), Cadenza (grades K-3) and Crescendo (senior citizens) In addition to regular home concerts, recent performances include “Carmina Burana” at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts in Kansas City, MO; a collaborative project called “Modern Families” with the Heartland Men’s Chorus at the Folly Theater in Kansas City; shared concerts with the Kansas Sinfonietta, mezzo- sopranos Joyce Castle and Vanessa Thomas and pianists Anna Han and Chaeyoung Park at the Lied Center in Lawrence, KS; and “The Play of Daniel” with the Boston Camerata, under the direction of Anne Azema The LCC Tour Choir tours annually, with an emphasis on collaborative and cross-cultural experiences Recent world premier performances include “The Weaver” and the treble arrangement of “Sisi Ni Moja”, both by Jake Narverud, and “If It Must Be,” by Andrea Ramsey

Carolyn holds Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Vocal Performance from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and a Bachelor’s in Music Education from Minnesota State University, where she studied conducting with David Dickau She spent her youth in Colorado, California, Texas and Latin America She has taught private voice for many years and taught vocal and choral music from 1996-2013 for the Lawrence Public Schools, at the elementary, middle and high school levels, and is active as a judge and clinician

Carolyn and her husband Bryan live on a farm outside Lawrence, KS, where they raise organic, grass-fed cattle and sheep

Allison Hedgepeth, Choir Co-Manager

Allison Hedgepeth has taught elementary music for 17 years in Kansas, California, and Oregon . For the last twelve years she has been teaching at Forest Hills Elementary in Lake Oswego, Oregon Allison graduated from Kansas State with a bachelor’s degree in Music Education and Portland State University with a Masters of Music in Education Allison has completed all four levels of Kodaly training, and is currently serving as the OMEA District 14 Elementary Honor Choir Organizer and Elementary Music Coordinator for the Lake Oswego School District In her free time Allison enjoys spending time with her two daughters, husband, and yellow lab named Daisy!

John Hillan-Payne, Choir Co-Manager

John Hillan-Payne is delighted to be co-manager of the 2019 OMEA Elementary All-State Choir With fourteen years of directing children’s choirs, teaching classroom music, and presenting teacher workshops, he seeks to instill in students a lifelong passion for music through fun and rigorous experiences in singing songs and games, playing instruments, and movement He graduated from the University of MissouriKansas City Conservatory of Music with a Bachelor of Music Education degree (2004) and earned a Master’s in Teaching degree from Portland State University (2009) Further trainings include Orff-Schulwerk and Kodály philosophies, as well as National Board Certification. In 2016, he was the recipient of the OMEA Outstanding Music Educator award He works to strengthen music education in Oregon by serving on several boards and committees; he is currently President of Southern Washington and Oregon Kodály Educators (SWOKE), and has been an Elementary Chair for the Oregon Music Education Association Mr Hillan-Payne has taught in the West Linn-Wilsonville School District since 2004 and is currently the music teacher and choral director at Lowrie Primary School
