Kathy Briggs, OMEA President

Kathy Briggs has been teaching in public and private schools since 1997 She started her teaching career in the public schools in Minnesota, where she taught elementary music and high school choir for eight years Now in her twelfth year at St . Mary’s Academy in Portland, Oregon teaching general music and choir, she also conducts the Women’s Chorale at the University of Portland

Ms Briggs earned her BA in Music Education from the University of WisconsinMadison and her MA in Music Education/Choral Conducting from the University of St Thomas She has earned numerous awards and recognition for her teaching, including the 2016 Oregon ACDA Podium Award for Excellence in the Choral Arts Her research has been published in the ACDA Choral Journal, she has authored and published general music lesson plans for VH1 and NAfME, and she has been a clinician at both state and regional NAfME conferences Ms Briggs’s choirs have won numerous awards and recognition in the Pacific Northwest, including a performance at the 2013 NAfME Northwest Conference and winning the 2015 OSAA State Choir Championship for 6A schools Her students have toured in New York, Florida, Washington, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and France and her choir has twice been invited to perform for President Obama and the First Lady and their guests in the White House

Ms Briggs is a third-generation educator – both her parents were public school teachers and her grandfather was a high school band director She was active in music and choir from an early age and was a proud tuba player in the band throughout elementary, middle, and high school in her rural Wisconsin home town She is a proud member of ACDA, NAfME, and OMEA and is honored to be the current OMEA President-Elect It is Ms Briggs’ lifelong dream to meet Julie Andrews

Jeremy Zander, OMEA President Elect

Jeremy Zander is in his second year as Director of Bands at Mountainside High School in the Beaverton School District in Beaverton, OR Prior to his current appointment, Mr Zander served at Southridge High School for seven years and has held the Director of Bands position at middle schools in the TigardTualatin and Salem-Keizer School Districts He holds a Bachelor of Music (Music Education & Flute Performance) degree from the University of Oregon and a Master of Music (Conducting) from the American Band College of Sam Houston State University While at the University of Oregon, he received the Outstanding Service Award and graduated Magna Cum Laude

Wind Ensembles, Jazz Ensembles and Marching Bands under his direction have received many accolades During his time at Southridge, the Wind Ensemble qualified for the OSAA 6A Band Contest every year, and finished among the top five bands on four occasions. Many of Mr. Zander’s students have been selected to participate in All-State or All-Northwest ensembles and several students have placed in their instrumental categories at the OSAA State Solo Contest The Southridge Wind Ensemble was selected to perform at the 2017 OMEA Conference

Mr Zander’s responsibilities at Mountainside include instructing and conducting the Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Percussion Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Chamber Orchestra and Marching Band and Musical Theater Pit Orchestra

Mr Zander is active as an adjudicator and guest conductor for several programs across the state . He is a member of Phi Beta Mu and currently serves as OMEA’s band representative for the Oregon Schools Activities Association He is an active advocate for music education and served on Beaverton School District’s Music Task Force

Todd Zimbelman, OMEA Past President

Todd R Zimbelman is the Director of Bands and Co-Director of the Symphony Orchestra at West Salem High School in the SalemKeizer School District (OR) Mr Zimbelman has held Director of Bands and Associate Director of Bands positions at the high school and college levels in Oregon and Texas Mr Zimbelman has been recognized as one of the “Top 50 Directors That Make A Difference,” the Claes Nobel’s Educator of Distinction, and the Oregon Symphony’s Music Educator of the Year

Under his direction, marching bands have received several championships and they are the reigning NWAPA Champions and Bands of America Tacoma Regional Champions Wind ensembles consistently receive superior ratings and most recently have placed first at the 6A OSAA State Band Championship the past nine years in a row (2009-Southridge, 2010-Present-West Salem) His ensembles have attended national and international festivals and have performed at the Oregon Music Educators State Conference and the NAfME All-NW Conference Students under his direction are regularly selected for All-City, All-State, and All-Northwest honor bands as well as the OSAA State Solo Contest

His arrangements and compositions are performed at national and international festivals and competitions His technique books are used by several programs across the United States He has adjudicated for several organizations including Bands of America and Drum Corps International He is currently a member of The American Band Masters Association, College Band Directors National Association, National Association for Music Educators, National Band Association, Oregon Band Directors Association, Oregon Music Education Association (president), and Phi Beta Mu

David Becker, OMEA Treasurer

David Becker retired in 2011 from Lewis & Clark College where he was Director of Bands for 29 years In addition to directing concert and jazz bands, he taught music education, conducting and jazz appreciation courses, and led Lewis & Clark students on numerous fine arts semesters in London. He also chaired the Music Department for several terms and taught and supervised student teachers for the Graduate School’s MAT program While teaching at Lewis & Clark, he also served for two years as Conductor-In-Residence at Oregon State University

Becker has adjudicated, managed or conducted at over 300 music festivals in 21 states and Canadian provinces His frequent appearances at state, regional and national music conferences as a clinician include conducting several all-state bands Becker is a past president of the Oregon Music Educators Association, College Band Directors National Association NW Division and Oregon Alliance for Arts Education . He was the first president of the Oregon Band Directors Association and continues to chair their Adjudicator Certification Committee. He was a co-creator of the OBDA Band and Orchestra Adjudication System in the early 1980s and helped create and continues to be involved with the Oregon School Activities Association’s State High School Band & Orchestra Championships . He also has been responsible for Oregon’s High School Band Contest Literature List since its inception in 1984

He has been the recipient of the Citation of Excellence from the National Band Association, Interscholastic Music Outstanding Music Educator Award, Section 8, from the National Federation of State High Schools Associations, and service awards from the Oregon School Activities Association and Oregon Music Education Association, including the John McManus Service Award, named in honor of Becker’s collegiate mentor at the University of Oregon

Janet Lea, OMEA 2nd Vice President

Janet Lea teaches Kindergarten through fifth grade general music and fourth and fifth grade choir at North Bay Elementary at North Bend School District in North Bend, Oregon This is her fourteenth year teaching, and before elementary music she taught secondary choir Janet has been active with OMEA as a district chair, and chair and co-chair of festivals such as solo/ensemble and middle school choir festivals in various locations in Oregon She attended Pacific Lutheran University from 1995-1998 studying music composition. She received her Bachelor of Arts with an emphasis in music composition from Whitworth College in 1999, and her Master of Arts in Teaching from Lewis & Clark College in 2005 Ms Lea also holds an Endorsement in Drama from George Fox University

William Owens, Guest Band Conductor

William Owens is a native of Gary, Indiana His career as a music educator spans three decades and he is very active as a composer, clinician and conductor throughout the United States and Canada . His compositions for young ensembles display a practical, erudite approach which has firmly established him as a leader in the field.

Since 1993, William has written over 200 commissioned and published works for concert band, string orchestra and small ensemble His music has been performed at prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall, the Midwest Clinic, and appears on required music lists nationally and abroad Principal commissions include those from the California Band Directors Association, the Chicago Public School Bureau of Cultural Arts, the Iowa Bandmasters Association, the Indiana Bandmasters Association and the South Plains College (TX) Department of Fine Arts

Several of his compositions are recorded and analyzed in educational text by the GIA series Teaching Music Through Performance in Band while numerous others have become staples of the young band repertoire .

William is a 1985 graduate of Chicago’s VanderCook College of Music and the recipient of numerous awards and grants for composition In 2014, he was recognized by the Texas Bandmasters Association as the Feature Composer and named Distinguished Alumnus by his Alma Mater Professional memberships include the American Society of Composers Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), the American Composers Forum (ACF), Phi Beta Mu, the Association of Texas Small School Bands (ATSSB) and the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA)

In 2014, William retired from duty as a band director in Texas after 30 years of service In his spare time, he enjoys sightseeing and reading, particularly motivational material and Presidential biography A proud Chevrolet Corvette owner/enthusiast, he holds membership with Cowtown Vettes, a non-profit charitable organization in the DFW Metroplex Owens resides in Fort Worth, TX with his wife and best friend, Georgia

Ann McBride, Band Co-Manager

Ann McBride is currently the band director at West Orient Middle School in the Gresham-Barlow School District She has been directing bands for 22 years, in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, the Oregon Trail School District, and for the last 16 years at West Orient Middle School In addition to co-managing the All-State Band, Ann organizes festivals, teaches at band camps, and has worked for years on band curriculum and assessment for the Gresham-Barlow

School District

Ann graduated with a BA in Music Education from the University of Minnesota –Moorhead, and earned an MEd in Education Technology, from Lesley University

When Ann is not teaching music, you will find her bicycling, running, or swimming as she prepares for her next triathlon Ann loves spending time with her husband; they like to travel around the country and the world They are self-proclaimed foodies and are always on the hunt for another amazing meal . When she is home, she delights in her cats and researching the next travel adventure

Jenna Gagne, Band Co-Manager

Jenna Gagne lives in Gresham, Oregon, and is now in her sixth year as Director of Bands at Dexter McCarty Middle School in the Gresham-Barlow School District, where she teaches Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced Bands, Jazz Band, a world music class, and an AVID class

Ms Gagne graduated from Oregon State University with a Bachelor of Music degree 2011 and a Master of Arts in Teaching degree in 2012

In addition to teaching at Northwest Band Camps, Willamette Valley Band Camp, and

Metro Band Camp, Ms Gagne also organizes band festivals and other music events, in addition to her years of assisting in the managing of the Oregon Middle School All State Band

Ms. Gagne also strives to keep up her flute and piccolo chops by playing as often as she can, including playing in the Warner Pacific College Community Band.

When Ms. Gagne is not involved in her musical endeavors, you will find her snowboarding on the slopes of Mt Hood, paddle-boarding and hiking throughout the Northwest, enjoying time on the Coast, and heading back to her native Canada as often as possible When you see her, make sure to ask about poutine and other Canadian delicacies!

Kirt Mosier, MS Orchestra Conductor

Internationally known composer and conductor Kirt Mosier is the artistic director for the Kansas City Youth Symphony and is the former director of orchestras at Lee’s Summit West High School in Lee’s Summit, Missouri He has also taught orchestration and arranging as an adjunct professor at UMKC Conservatory of Music in Kansas City, Missouri Mosier has twice won national composition awards In 1993, his original work, “Baltic Dance,” won the National School Orchestra Association Composition Contest and in 2004, “American Reel,” won the 2004 Merle J Isaac national composition contest

In 2010, the Portland Ballet Company of Portland, Maine commissioned Mr . Mosier to write an original score to their production of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

From 1990 to present, Kirt Mosier has conducted numerous all-state and honor orchestras throughout the United States and abroad In addition, he has frequently been utilized as a keynote speaker at conferences

Mr Mosier is the founding teacher of the Digital Media Technology program at Summit Technology Academy which is housed by the Lee’s Summit R7 School District Digital

Media Technology students learn studio multitrack recording as well as video editing software and techniques Mr Mosier’s students at Summit Technology Academy have won national recognition

Mr Mosier has been the past orchestra vice-president for the state Missouri Music Educators Association and is currently the past president of American String Teachers Association for the state of Missouri

In 2015, Mr Mosier conducted his work RUN! with the Georgia All-State Orchestra In September of 2015, Mr Mosier conducted the International Strings Festival in Bangkok, Thailand. Mr. Mosier was also a quarterfinalist for the 2016 Grammy Music Educator of the year award In 2016 Mr Mosier conducted the National High School Honors Orchestra as well as the National Junior Honors Orchestra at Carnegie Hall He also had two world premiere performances at the 2017 Midwest International Clinic in Chicago In 2017 Mr Mosier’s travels took him twice to Carnegie Hall, Reykjavik, Iceland, and Jakarta, Indonesia, as well as many locations within the United States In 2018 his conducting appearances will include performances throughout the United States, Singapore, The Netherlands, and at the Sydney Opera House in Sydney, Australia . The Kansas City Symphony premiered one of Mosier’s holiday arrangements in December of 2017

In 2018 and beyond, Mr Mosier will be conducting various all state and honor groups that will include two guest appearances in Seoul, South Korea He has also been named composer in residence at the Taipei American School for 2020

Eddy Robinson, MS Orchestra Co-Manager

Eddy Robinson began playing the bass when he was nine years old Between the ages of eleven and eighteen, he participated in the Salem Youth Symphony A graduate of Sprague High School in Salem, Eddy earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from the University of Oregon in 2004 .

Mr. Robinson started the orchestra program in the Florence Unified School District in Florence, Arizona in 2005, where he taught for seven years Eddy was the 2012 co-chair of the Southern Arizona Honor Orchestra Mr Robinson currently teaches orchestra at both Sky View Middle School and Mountain View High School in Bend, Oregon, as well as co-conducts the Central Oregon Youth Orchestra

Mac Mayer, MS Orchestra Co-Manager

Mac Mayer is Orchestra Director at Whiteaker Middle School and feeder elementary schools in Keizer, Oregon He holds undergraduate degrees in Music Performance (Double Bass- Jazz Studies) and Music Education from The Ohio State University and

a Master of Music Education from the University of Kansas Prior to teaching in the Salem-Keizer School District, Mr Mayer taught orchestra in Olathe, Kansas, Marietta, Georgia, and Pickerington, Ohio While in Kansas, Mr Mayer served as a guest conductor, adjudicator, and clinician across the state, including twice as a conductor for String Fling at Kansas State University, and for the Western Kansas Orchestra Festival Mr Mayer is married to Brigid Mayer, Orchestra Director at Clackamas High School in Clackamas, Oregon His son Eben plays cello and baseball, his daughter Noa plays violin, and youngest daughter Helen shows a variety of musical abilities at a young age! Mr Mayer is honored to serve students and teachers in Oregon as Co-Chair of the Middle School All-State Orchestra and looks forward to providing many more opportunities to students through music!

Dr . Anthony Trecek-King is the President and Artistic Director of the award-winning Boston Children’s Chorus (BCC) Under his direction, the chorus has earned a reputation as an ensemble of high distinction and in 2013 received the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award from the White House Trecek-King’s performances have been heralded as possessing a “surprising range of dynamics and depth of expression ” He has collaborated on performances with Keith Lockhart, John Williams, Simon Halsey, Yo Yo Ma and Roomful of Teeth and has led BCC in performances at Boston Symphony

Mary Brandenstein, MS Mixed Choir Co-Manager

Mary Brandenstein moved to Portland, Oregon from Chicago, Illinois to pursue her career in music education . She currently serves as the choir director at Glencoe High School, in Hillsboro, OR Previously, Mary spent 4 years directing a full time choral program of over 250 students at Houck Middle School, in the Salem Keizer school district She is proud to be an alumna of Millikin University, where she received her BM in Vocal Music Education .

Zachary Schwalbach, MS Mixed Choir Co-Manager

Zach Schwalbach is the Director of Choirs at Lake Oswego High School, where he has the privilege of working with five curricular choirs and teaching music theory He also serves as the secondary music coordinator for the Lake Oswego School District, and as treasurer for the Oregon ACDA He received his BM in Vocal Music Education from St Olaf College, where he studied conducting with Anton Armstrong, Timothy Mahr, and Christopher Aspaas

Carolyn Welch, Artistic Director of the Lawrence Children’s Choir, has been an integral part of LCC since 1996 and became Artistic Director in 2012 She oversees the artistic life of the 6-choir organization and directs the Ambassador Choir (grades 8-10), Tour Choir (grades 5-10), Choristers (grades 3-6), Cadenza (grades K-3) and Crescendo (senior citizens) In addition to regular home concerts, recent performances include “Carmina Burana” at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts in Kansas City, MO; a collaborative project called “Modern Families” with the Heartland Men’s Chorus at the Folly Theater in Kansas City; shared concerts with the Kansas Sinfonietta, mezzo- sopranos Joyce Castle and Vanessa Thomas and pianists Anna Han and Chaeyoung Park at the Lied Center in Lawrence, KS; and “The Play of Daniel” with the Boston Camerata, under the direction of Anne Azema The LCC Tour Choir tours annually, with an emphasis on collaborative and cross-cultural experiences Recent world premier performances

Carolyn holds Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Vocal Performance from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and a Bachelor’s in Music Education from Minnesota State University, where she studied conducting with David Dickau She spent her youth in Colorado, California, Texas and Latin America She has taught private voice for many years and taught vocal and choral music from 1996-2013 for the Lawrence Public Schools, at the elementary, middle and high school levels, and is active as a judge and clinician

Carolyn and her husband Bryan live on a farm outside Lawrence, KS, where they raise organic, grass-fed cattle and sheep

Allison Hedgepeth, Choir Co-Manager

Allison Hedgepeth has taught elementary music for 17 years in Kansas, California, and Oregon . For the last twelve years she has been teaching at Forest Hills Elementary in Lake Oswego, Oregon Allison graduated from Kansas State with a bachelor’s degree in Music Education and Portland State University with a Masters of Music in Education Allison has completed all four levels of Kodaly training, and is currently serving as the OMEA District 14 Elementary Honor Choir Organizer and Elementary Music Coordinator for the Lake Oswego School District In her free time Allison enjoys spending time with her two daughters, husband, and yellow lab named Daisy!

John Hillan-Payne, Choir Co-Manager

John Hillan-Payne is delighted to be co-manager of the 2019 OMEA Elementary All-State Choir With fourteen years of directing children’s choirs, teaching classroom music, and presenting teacher workshops, he seeks to instill in students a lifelong passion for music through fun and rigorous experiences in singing songs and games, playing instruments, and movement He graduated from the University of MissouriKansas City Conservatory of Music with a Bachelor of Music Education degree (2004) and earned a Master’s in Teaching degree from Portland State University (2009) Further trainings include Orff-Schulwerk and Kodály philosophies, as well as National Board Certification. In 2016, he was the recipient of the OMEA Outstanding Music Educator award He works to strengthen music education in Oregon by serving on several boards and committees; he is currently President of Southern Washington and Oregon Kodály Educators (SWOKE), and has been an Elementary Chair for the Oregon Music Education Association Mr Hillan-Payne has taught in the West Linn-Wilsonville School District since 2004 and is currently the music teacher and choral director at Lowrie Primary School

Erick Lichte, HS Mixed Choir Conductor

Hailed by the Washington Post for the “audacity” of his programming, and by the Chicago Tribune for the “meticulous preparation” of his choirs, Erick Lichte has been at the vanguard of choral music in North America As a founding member, singer and Artistic Director of the male vocal ensemble Cantus, Lichte created and sustained one of the only a full-time vocal ensembles in the United States Since 2013, Lichte has been the Artistic Director of Chor Leoni Men’s Choir in Vancouver B C During his tenure, he has transformed the ensemble into one of the most prolific and popular amateur choirs in North America, annually presenting over 25 concerts to nearly 17,000 people

Allison Bassett, Mixed Choir Co-Manager

Allison Bassett is a true Oregonian, having grown up on the coast, obtained her degrees at Oregon colleges, and is the current Director of Choirs at Cleveland High School in Portland Oregon She has been teaching choir and theatre at various grade levels since 2010 Most recently, she was a graduate choral assistant in the School of Music at Portland State University While there, she co-conducted the PSU Man Choir and University Choir, taught classes in Music Education, and sang in the international champion Portland State Chamber Choir Allison is an Oregon-licensed music educator and prior to coming to Portland State, she was the Director of Choral Activities & Theatre Arts at Marshfield High School. During her time at Marshfield, Allison served as the Fine & Performing Arts Department Chair, established a thriving male chorus and more than tripled choir enrollment over three years Allison also served District 7 OMEA in positions of leadership and was awarded “Teacher of the Year” in 2011 by the Coos Bay School District Allison holds a bachelor’s degree in Vocal Performance/Choral Music, a Master of Arts in Teaching degree from Eastern Oregon University, and a Master of Music in Choral Conducting from Portland State University While at EOU, she was awarded “Music Student of the Year” in 2009 and “Graduate Teacher Student of the Year” in 2010

Kevin Durfee, Mixed Choir Co-Manager

Kevin Durfee is in his eleventh year of teaching choirs at La Grande Middle and High Schools Prior to teaching in La Grande, Mr Durfee taught choir in the Nyssa School district for eight years He received his Associate of Arts degree from Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario, Oregon, a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Portland State University and a Master of Arts in Teaching with a music emphasis from Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon

La Grande High School Choirs have enjoyed a tradition of excellence for decades . Under Mr Durfee’s tenure, La Grande A Cappella Choir has placed in the top three at the OSAA State Choir Championships nine out of ten years, and won the event in 2009, 2012, 2013, and 2015 In addition to teaching, Mr Durfee is also a Chief Warrant Officer Four in the Army National Guard of Idaho, where he commands the 25th Army Band During CW4 Durfee’s tenure as Bandmaster, the band has performed for President George W Bush, and performed missions in Colorado, Montana, South Carolina, Georgia, Oregon, and California

Besides his command duties in the band, Mr Durfee also plays piano in the small jazz ensemble: Snake River Jazz Mr Durfee has been married to his beautiful wife Kascie for 27 years . Together they have eight children: Jessica, Dononvan, Quentin, Amanda, Sarah, Weston, Eliza, and Olivia, all of whom are musically inclined and busy Kevin’s hobbies outside of music is wrenching on motor-cycles and cars

Dr Soo Han, Guest Orchestra Conductor

Dr Soo Han is the Director of Orchestral Activities at The Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music, a contributing editor for Hal Leonard’s Essential Elements for Strings, a D’Addario Orchestral Strings Artist, Conn-Selmer Educational Clinician, a member of the Board of Directors of the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic, and the former Director of Orchestras & Department Chair of the William H Duke Center for the Performing Arts at Carmel High in Carmel, IN

As an active conductor, he has appeared with Carmel Symphony Orchestra, Cave Run Symphony Orchestra, Michigan State Opera Theatre, Michigan State Symphony Orchestra, Valparaiso University, and Butler University Symphony Orchestra He is an active conductor for All-State, regional, and honor orchestras appearing in over 30 states and has conducted internationally in Austria, China, and Australia . He has collaborated with numerous artists, groups, and conductors such as Lynn Harrell, David Kim, and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra He has produced multiple recordings of complete symphonies and has premiered several

commissioned works for strings and full orchestras He has presented workshops and clinics internationally and for nearly every major national and state music conference including, Australian String Teacher Conference, Maryborough National Australia Conference, Midwest Clinic, ASTA National Conference, NAfME National Conference, and Ohio University Summer String Teacher Workshop

Orchestras under his leadership experienced a great deal of success including 9 Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) State Championship and being named Grand Champions at the National Orchestra Cup at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall As a passionate supporter of public school music programs, he continues to remain active in instrumental classrooms throughout the country

He is the past-president of the Indiana American String Teachers Association and the chapter was awarded the ‘Most Improved Chapter’ during his time as president and recently served as the National American String Teachers Association’s K-12 Committee Chair He received his Bachelor of Instrumental Music Education degree from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, Master of Science in Education from Indiana University School of Education, and received his Doctorate in Orchestral Conducting from the Michigan State University College of Music .

Kristina Stingle, HS Orchestra Co-Manager

Kristina Stingle is the Orchestra director at Lakeridge Junior and Senior High Schools in Lake Oswego, where she has served since the fall of 2016 . Ms . Stingle previously taught at Neenah High School in Wisconsin for 16 years as an instrumental and choral music educator She led the high school orchestras, an eclectic string ensemble, directed pit orchestras, and was the K-12 Music Department Chair for the district Kristi enjoyed being the Chair of the Wisconsin High School State Honors Music Project (WMEA All-State) from 2012 to 2015, and the High School Orchestra Coordinator and String Bass coach from 2006 to 2010 Stingle was the inaugural conductor of the “Fox Valley Sinfonia” (2015), where she was a part of a comedic team creating unique performances by “amateur” (beginning) musicians in support of the Fox Valley Symphony and Youth Symphony program, which has currently equated over $100,000 in support over the course of three years A graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Stingle was honored by the Civic Music Association of Milwaukee, WI in 2005 for Excellence in Choral Teaching, and was Neenah High School’s Teacher of the Year in 2016

Darian Douglas is a professional violinist and educator, who has been performing and teaching orchestras in Tucson, Arizona and Lake Oswego, Oregon since 2008 He is currently a Graduate Fellow in String Education at the University of Oregon In the interest of sharing this knowledge of pedagogy to enrich

Larry Gookin, Wind Ensemble Guest Conductor

Larry Gookin is Distinguished Professor and Emeritus Professor of Music at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, WA He served for 34 years as Director of Bands before retiring from CWU in 2015 Prior to teaching at Central, Professor Gookin taught band for ten years in Montana and Oregon public schools

During his tenure at Central, the CWU Wind Ensemble performed by invitation at major conferences and conventions, including the College Band Directors National Association Conferences in Boulder and Seattle, the Music Educators National Conference in Minneapolis, the Western International Band Clinics in Seattle, the Western/Northwestern CBDNA Division Conferences in Reno, the Northwest Division NAFME conferences, and WMEA State Conferences

Larry Gookin has received numerous honors and awards He has served as president of the Northwestern Division of the CBDNA, Divisional Chairman for the National Band Association, and Vice President of the Washington Music Educators Association He is a member of the American Bandmasters Association and the WMEA Hall of Fame, and he is a past recipient of the NBA “Citation of Excellent Award,” the

First Chair of America “Mac” Award, the ASBDA “Standbury Award,” the WIAA/ WMEA teacher of the year award, and the University of Oregon’s School of Music

Distinguished Alumnus Award Gookin was also named CWU Distinguished Professor of Teaching, and while at Central, he served as Associate Chair and Coordinator of Graduate Studies . In 2016, Gookin was elected into the Northwest Bandmaster’s Association, and in 2017 he received the National Association for Music Education Distinguished Service Award He is former principal trombone of the Eugene and Yakima Symphony Orchestras, and is Emeritus Artistic Director/Conductor of the Seattle Wind Symphony

Professor Gookin received the M .M . in Music Education from the University of Oregon School of Music in 1977 and the B M in Music Education and Trombone Performance from the University of Montana in 1971 Professor Gookin has appeared as clinician, adjudicator, and conductor in the United States, Canada, Japan, Southeast Asia, Europe and the Middle East He is a Yamaha Master Educator and remains active as a conductor, clinician, and adjudicator .

Gookin resides in Ellensburg, Washington, with his wife Karen, who is Emeritus Professor of English at CWU and recently retired on piccolo and flute from the Yakima Symphony Orchestra

Stuart Welsh is the Director of Bands at West Albany High School in Albany, Oregon His program includes two jazz bands, three concert bands, two percussion ensembles, AP music theory and Event Technology Originally from Sitka, Alaska, Mr Welsh received his Bachelors of Instrumental and Vocal Music from the University of Idaho in 1996 . He received his Masters of Science in Music from the American Band College in 2001

Mr. Welsh began teaching fifth through twelfth grade music in Leavenworth, Washington in 1996 He has been teaching at West Albany High School since 2004
