Introduction from the OMEA President Welcome to the 2024 OMEA All-State Concerts As President of the Oregon Music Education Association, I am immensely proud of our students’ achievements along with the tremendous music programs and teachers across the state. Being selected to be in these ensembles is an honor that students received after countless hours of hard work and practice. Thank you parents and educators for supporting your students’ desire to participate at All-State. These students have spent the weekend working with some of the best conductors and clinicians from across the country. The experiences, memories, and skills students have gained this weekend will last a lifetime, and will be taken back to their own music programs. We have an incredible conference planning team that volunteered their time to run an outstanding conference and All-State experience. This year’s team is led by our President-Elect Erika Lockwood, Conference Chair Elizabeth Soper, and our All-State Manager Kristi Stingle. Congratulations to Erika, Elizabeth, and Kristi, their planning teams, and our ensemble managers. Ben Lawson, OMEA President and Band Chair Ben Lawson is the Band and Choir Director at Redmond High School in Redmond, Oregon. Ben holds a BA in Instrumental Conducting and a MAT in Music Education from Oregon State University. Since his first year teaching he has been an active member of the Oregon Music Education Association, serving as chairs for over 25 festivals at the district level, two years on the State Executive board as 2nd Vice President and Conference Chair of the 2011 conference. He has served four years as the All-State Jazz Band Manager and eight years as the All-NW Band Manager. Currently Ben is the President of the Oregon Music Education Association, and Past-President of the Oregon Band Directors Association.He is a certified OBDA/OSAA band adjudicator and is on staff with the Oregon Ambassadors of Music.

Erika Lockwood, OMEA President-Elect Erika Lockwood has been teaching singers from preschool through 12th grade since 2002, becoming the Director of Choirs at Rex Putnam High School in 2011. Under her direction, the choirs have been awarded numerous Gold Awards by the Oregon ACDA in addition to top placings in league and state festivals (OSAA 5A Champions, 2014 and 2022). Ms. Lockwood is a state certified choral adjudicator and has served on the board of the Oregon chapter of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA). She is currently serving as President Elect of the Oregon Music Education Association (OMEA). Ms. Lockwood holds a Master of Education as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Music with High Honor from Portland State University. She serves as a mentor to teacher candidates as well as new music teachers, and is passionate about equity and inclusion in the music classroom. She lives in Milwaukie with her husband and two children - all musicians, and enjoys running, yoga, baking, and spending time on the water.

Kelly Moore, OMEA 2nd Vice President Kelly Moore is the Director of Bands at Ridgeview High School in Redmond, OR. She has her B.M.E. and her M.M.E. from the University of Oregon. Kelly is the current OMEA 2nd Vice President, the OBDA Central Oregon Regional Representative, and the OMEA District 05 Membership Chair. In her district, she organizes and hosts district honor band, Solo and Ensemble Festival, as well as the Middle and High School district band festivals. A native Central Oregonian who has returned to teach in her hometown, Kelly has taught 10 of her 11 years in the Redmond School district. She taught five years of band and choir at Obsidian Middle School and is in her fifth year of teaching band, drumline, O M E A JANUARY 2024

and jazz at Ridgeview High School. During that time, she built the programs to record numbers, started a middle school choir program, a high school drumline, and has demonstrated her musical excellence at the state band and jazz band contests. Kelly teaches privately and performs in Central Oregon on Flute and Alto Saxophone, is on staff with the Oregon Ambassadors of Music, and Co-Managed the All-State Wind Ensemble for the 2021 Oregon Conference.

Jeremy Zander, OMEA Past President Jeremy Zander is in his sixth year as Director of Bands at Mountainside High School in the Beaverton School District in Beaverton, OR. Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Zander served at Southridge High School for seven years and has held the Director of Bands position at middle schools in the TigardTualatin and Salem-Keizer School Districts. He received his Bachelor of Music in Music Education and Flute Performance from the University of Oregon and a Master of Music in Conducting from the American Band College of Sam Houston State University. While at the University of Oregon, he received the Outstanding Service Award and graduated Magna Cum Laude. Mr. Zander is active as an adjudicator and guest conductor for several programs across the state. He is a member of Phi Beta Mu and serves as Immediate Past President of the Oregon Music Education Association. He is an active advocate for music education and served on Beaverton School District’s Music Task Force. Wind Ensembles, Jazz Ensembles and Marching Bands under his direction have received many accolades. Many of Mr. Zander’s students have been selected to participate in All-State or All-Northwest ensembles and several students have placed in their instrumental categories at the OSAA State Solo Contest. Mr. Zander has a wife, Bethany, of eight years, and three sons, Gabriel (4), Peter (2), and newborn Benjamin.

Elizabeth Soper, OMEA Conference Chair Elizabeth Soper is a dedicated music educator who serves as the Oregon Music Educators Association (OMEA) Conference Chair. With a Master’s in Education from Capella University, Elizabeth teaches elementary, middle, and high school band and choir in the Lincoln County School District. She graduated summa cum laude from the University of Oregon, holding degrees in Music Education and Music Performance (Flute), along with a minor in Nonprofit Management, which showcases her commitment to a holistic education. Elizabeth’s fervent dedication to expanding musical opportunities resonates within her community and across the state, encompassing public schools and local nonprofits. Notably, she’s been the collegiate volunteer coordinator and transportation manager for the 2020, 2022, and 2023 OMEA Conferences, demonstrating her organizational expertise and dedication to fostering meaningful learning experiences within music education. 8

Kristi Stingle, OMEA All-State Chair Kristi Stingle is the Orchestra director at Lakeridge Middle and Senior High Schools in Lake Oswego, where she has taught since 2016. Kristi enjoys being an active member of OMEA, and served as the 2nd Vice President from 2019-2021 and as HS All-State Orchestra Manager since 2018. She also chaired the Wisconsin High School State Honors Music Project (WMEA All-State) from 2012 to 2015, and was the High School Orchestra Coordinator and String Bass coach from 2006 to 2010. A graduate of the University of WisconsinMadison, Stingle has been teaching since 2001 and has been honored by the Civic Music Association of Milwaukee, WI in 2005 for Excellence in Teaching, and was Neenah High School’s Teacher of the Year in 2016.

Todd Zimbelman, OMEA Treasurer Todd Zimbelman is the Executive Officer and Band Director for Oregon Ambassadors of Music. He also holds the position of Director of Bands and Director of the Symphony Orchestra at West Salem High School in the Salem-Keizer School District (OR). Mr. Zimbelman has held Director of Bands and Associate Director of Bands positions at the high school and college levels in Oregon and Texas. He holds bachelor and master of music degrees from the University of Oregon. Mr. Zimbelman has been recognized for the School Band and Orchestra magazine’s Top 50 directors that make a difference, the Claes Nobel’s Educator of Distinction, the Oregon Symphony’s Music Educator of the Year, and the National Band Association’s Programs of Excellence Blue Ribbon National Award. The West Salem Wind Ensemble has performed at several national and international music festivals and conferences. Some highlights include the Oregon Music Education Association State Conference, NAfME Northwest Convention, Western International Band Clinic, and the Pacific Basin International Music Festival in Honolulu, HI. The West Salem Wind Ensemble has placed 1st in the OSAA State Band Contest several times. Jazz Bands and Marching Band have also placed among the top in their divisions. Students under his direction are regularly selected for honor bands at All-City, All-State, All-Northwest, and the state OMEA Chamber Ensemble and OSAA State Solo contests. Arrangements and compositions by Mr. Zimbelman have been performed internationally. His Winds Technique Books I and II are used by several programs across the United States. He is an active adjudicator and clinician. He is a member of the American Bandmasters Association, College Band Directors National Association, National Association for Music Educators, National Band Association, Oregon Band Director’s Association, Oregon Music Education Association, and Phi Beta Mu. Mr. Zimbelman is currently the Treasurer of the Oregon Music Education Association.

Laura Arthur, Advocacy Chair Laura Arthur is the K-12 Music Teacher On Special Assignment (TOSA) for Portland Public Schools in Portland, Oregon. In her TOSA role, she supports all music programs at the district level through arts advocacy, creating and delivering professional development, curating curriculum, coordinating events, and instructional coaching. Before becoming a part of the PPS Visual and Performing Arts team, she taught middle school band for 12 years, directing concert and jazz band ensembles along with teaching orchestra, guitar, percussion, and general music classes. Laura has presented at local, state, and national conferences around beginning band pedagogy, literature, and arts advocacy, and serves on the board of the Oregon Music Education Association as the state-wide Advocacy Chair. She is a graduate of the University of Oregon (B.Mus, Music Education) and Portland State University (M.Ed). Laura is a passionate advocate for equity, and believes that a comprehensive and high-quality music education can, and should, be accessible to ALL students. She enjoys performing on bass clarinet and bari sax, baking, comics, and trivia.

Cynthia Navarro, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Chair Cynthia Navarro is in her 8th year as the director of bands at Clear Creek Middle School in Gresham, Oregon. Cynthia attended Azusa Pacific University in California where she earned a Bachelor of Music in Bass Trombone Performance. Once in Oregon, she earned a Masters in Education at Portland State University and an Equity Certificate for School Leaders from Lewis and Clark University. In addition to serving as director of bands, Cynthia also serves her school as a member of the equity team and as an advisor for the student racial affinity group, Beauty of Color. For the past few years, Cynthia has led district wide training centered on interrupting racism in the classroom. Through these positions, she strives to help dismantle structures in the education system that work against BIPOC bit by bit so that ALL of BIPOC students and teachers are seen, heard, and supported.

Amanda Sarles, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Chair Amanda Sarles teaches Elementary Music at Siuslaw Elementary School in Florence, Oregon. In her music room, students are invited as a team of learners who explore singing, reading, writing, playing, and creating music. Amanda joined the Pacific Northwest after being born and raised in Music City USA, Nashville, Tennessee. In 2003, she earned her Bachelor of Music from Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music. Amanda began her music teaching

career at the International School of Kabul in Kabul, Afghanistan in 2009. While in Kabul she directed the school’s first musical productions of Ragtime, Annie, and The Music Man and her fellow teachers voted her 2011 ISK Teacher of the Year. Next she moved to Uganda and taught Elementary music at the International School of Uganda in Kampala. While in Kampala, Amanda organized an annual music festival for several International schools that culminated in a day of experiential learning in instrumental music, dance, singing, and African drumming. The student’s creativity was celebrated in a performance involving over 300 students. While completing a Master of Music Education at University of Oregon’s School of Music and Dance, Amanda was introduced to the Eugene Symphony’s Youth Concerts and volunteered with their Link Up Program. Her involvement with the Link Up Program gave her the opportunity to speak on a panel at the 2023 National Link Up Convening at Carnegie Hall. She is in her 6th year teaching Elementary music at Siuslaw, and in 2020 was awarded the Oregon PTA Teacher of the Year Award. She is the OMEA District 7 Chair and Equity Chair. In 2018 and 2022 Amanda presented to Elementary music teachers at OMEA Conference. Her investment in educational equity began from her own school experiences and has continued through local and networked work with the Western Regional Educator Network. Outside of school, she can often be found snuggling at home with Opry, her 130 pound Great Dane, backpacking her husband Gary, and making endless snacks for her 11 year old son, Connor.

Kathy Briggs, Choral Chair and Student Composition Contest Director Kathy Briggs has been teaching in public and private schools since 1998. She started her teaching career in public schools in rural Minnesota, where she taught elementary music and high school choir for eight years. In 2006, she moved to Portland, OR where she leads the award-winning choir program at St. Mary’s Academy and conducts the University of Portland’s Bel Canto. Her expertise is treble choirs and treble choir literature, along with the use of movement in the choral rehearsal. Ms. Briggs earned her BA in Music Education from the University of WisconsinMadison and her MA in Music Education/Choral Conducting from the University of St. Thomas. She has earned numerous awards and recognition for her teaching, including the 2016 Oregon ACDA Podium Award for Excellence in the Choral Arts. Her research has been published in the ACDA Choral Journal, she has authored and published general music lesson plans for VH1 and NAfME, and she has been a clinician at both state and regional NAfME conferences. Ms. Briggs’s choirs have won numerous awards and recognition in the Pacific Northwest, including a performance at the 2022 OMEA State Conference, 2013 NAfME Northwest Conference, a performance at the 2018 Northwest ACDA Conference, and winning the 2015 OSAA State Choir Championship. Her students have toured in New York, Florida, Washington, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and France and her choir was 12

invited twice to perform for President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama and their guests in the White House (2012, 2013). Ms. Briggs is a third-generation educator – both her parents were public school teachers and her grandfather was a high school band director. She was active in music from an early age and was a proud tuba player in her rural Wisconsin high school band. She is a proud member of ACDA, NAfME, and OMEA, is honored to be a Past-President of OMEA, and currently serves as the Choral Chair on the OMEA/ACDA boards. Ms. Briggs achieved her lifelong dream of meeting Julie Andrews in 2019.

Krista DeBolt, Orchestra Chair Krista DeBolt is the OMEA Orchestra Chair and orchestra director of the Grants Pass High School Orchestras. Krista is a violinist and is a member of the Rogue Valley Symphony, which performs locally several times each year, and is in her 27th year of teaching orchestra. I am excited for the opportunity to help strengthen and advance orchestra teaching, support, and collaboration in string education. I love violin, music, and teaching……my favorite thing is taking my students from just knowing the notes and rhythms to creating and presenting something truly unique and special and wholly us. My favorite quote that I share with all of my classes: “Before you can inspire with emotion, you must be swamped with it yourself. Before you can move them to tears. Your own must flow. To convince them, you must first yourself, believe.” Winton S. Churchill

Val Locke, Elementary Music Chair Mrs. Val Locke earned three separate undergraduate degrees from Warner Pacific College: a BA in Music Studies, BS in Music Composition, and another BA in Music Education. She received her M.Ed. in Creative Arts (focusing on Curriculum and Instruction) from Lesley University. She has Orff training, and certifications in World Music Drumming and Hot Marimba! as well as multiple other certificates. A 26-year teaching veteran, Val currently teaches K-5 general music, choir, marimba, and art in the David Douglas School District in Portland, OR. She is also an adjunct professor for George Fox University’s Graduate teaching program and for Eastern Oregon University, teaching Music, Art, Theater, and Movement to future elementary educators. Mrs. Locke was also a formal mentor for Warner Pacific College. Mrs. Locke retired from flute and piccolo with the prestigious Portland Wind Symphony (25 years) and continues to play with the local Portland Power Pep Band. She is sought after as a mentor, cooperating teacher, and friend to help guide new and aspiring music teachers in the northwest. She has served as Oregon Music Education Association’s General Music Chair in the past, and helped form their first Advocacy Group. Recently, she was inducted into the Cadre of Distinguished Educators in her O M E A JANUARY 2024

school district. Val served on the NAfME Council for General Music, as their NW Representative (covering 6 states) for five years. She served as the OMEA District 2 Elementary Chair, and 5 years ago- co-founded the very first elementary honor choir for that area. Val recently earned the Oregon Music Education Association’s 2020 Elementary Music Teacher of the Year Award. Val’s guiding classroom motto is, “Together, We Rock!”… her focus on giving and service within her community. In her “spare” time, Val enjoys spending time with her family, painting, and traveling. She highly recommends trying new things, even if it means looking like a dork in the process. With her whimsical humor and free spirit, she echoes the wise words of Yoda, “Do. Or do not. There is no try”.

Steve Phillips, General Music Chair Growing up in Salem, Oregon, Steve was influenced and inspired by many outstanding Music Educators. Steve has been the Music teacher and choral director at Auburn Elementary School for twenty seven years. He is active in Oregon Music Educators Association District 4, serving as Chair, from 2009-2013, and currently serving as treasurer for the District 4 board. He is also active in the state OMEA, currently serving as General Music Chair. He was selected the Oregon Symphony of Salem’s Music Educator of the year in 2014, and in 2022, he was selected as the Excellence in Elementary Music Education recipient by the Oregon Music Educators Association. He has directed several honor choirs throughout Oregon. He is active in his church and enjoys directing the adult choir there. In his spare time, he enjoys kayaking, hiking and relishing the beauty of the Pacific Northwest.

Jessika Smith, Jazz Chair Jessika Smith is an award-winning jazz composer, saxophonist, and music educator. She teaches at Parkrose Middle School and High School in Portland, and she directs her own professional big band comprised of professionals and educators from Washington, Idaho, and Oregon. Jessika has been working with youth jazz ensembles since 2008, and is a graduate of Eastern Washington University (BA Music Education) and the University of Oregon (Master of Music in Jazz Studies). She plays frequently with jazz groups throughout Oregon and Washington currently including Torrey Newhart’s Obsidian Animals, the Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble and the Frank Irwin Quintet. Jessika presents regularly at music education conferences, and frequently adjudicates jazz festivals and competitions including the Reno Jazz Festival, Fresno City College Jazz Festival, Mt. Hood Community College Jazz Festival, Pacific Lutheran University Jazz Festival, EWU Jazz Festival, Pleasant Hill Jazz Festival, and the Oregon Jazz Festival. Jessika’s debut album, Tricks of Light, features “Cyan Thread”, which won the 2015 National Band Association Young Composer’s Competition and “Lights” which won the 2013 Seattle Women’s Jazz Orchestra’s Jazz Composition Contest. 14

Melissa Jmaeff, Small Schools Chair Melissa Jmaeff graduated from Humboldt State University in 2005 where she majored in Flute Performance and Music Education. She is currently enrolled in an MMME program through Kent State University. She has taught in small public schools in Douglas County, Oregon for the last 17 years. In 2018 Melissa was awarded Sutherlin Educator of the Year for her work rebuilding the band and choir programs for the Sutherlin School District. When Melissa is not in the classroom she is a songwriter and recording artist having self-produced and toured behind 4 studio albums of original Americana/blues music. She lives on a small ranch with her husband and her border collie named Lu.

Wesley Brewer, SMTE/CNAfME Advisor Chair Wesley Brewer serves on the Oregon State University faculty as Associate Professor and Coordinator of Music Education. He completed his doctoral studies in music education at Arizona State University. Brewer previously served as Associate Professor and Director of Music Education at the Chicago College of Performing Arts of Roosevelt University. Dr. Brewer is the author of multiple scholarly publications including articles in the Journal of Research in Music Education, Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, Research Studies in Music Education, and The Journal of Music Teacher Education. He has presented findings from his research conferences throughout the United States and in Finland and Norway. Brewer was conference co-chair for Narrative Soundings: The Fifth International Conference on Narrative Inquiry in Music Education (NIME5). In 2010, Dr. Brewer was named recipient of the national Outstanding Dissertation Award presented by the Council for Research in Music Education.

Cameron Jerde, Conference Exhibitor and Sustaining Membership Chair Cameron Jerde is in his fifth year as Director of Bands at Southridge High School in the Beaverton School District in Beaverton, OR. Prior to his time at Southridge, he taught grades 8-12 band for three years at Marshfield High School in Coos Bay, OR. He holds two degrees from the University of Oregon: a Bachelor of Music in Music: Pre-Teacher Licensure (Class of 2014), and a Master of Music in Music Education (Class of 2016). While a graduate student, Mr. Jerde was on the instructional staff of the Oregon Athletic Bands as a Graduate Teaching Fellow, working with the Oregon Marching Band, the Oregon Basketball Band, and the Oregon Campus Band.

Leslie Wilson, All-State Housing Manager Leslie Wilson is the Band, Choir, and Music Theater Director at The Dalles Middle School in the North Wasco County School District in The Dalles, Oregon. Leslie holds a Bachelor of Science in Liberal Arts with minors in Music and Theater from Eastern Oregon University and a Masters of Arts in Education from University of Phoenix. Leslie has been teaching music for 19 years and the past 10 years have been at The Dalles Middle School. She has been an OMEA Housing Chaperone for 19 years and the Housing Manager for the past 8 years. Leslie loves cooking and baking, building Legos, and singing is her life’s passion. Another interesting fact is that she owns a retail business in The Dalles with her husband selling Legos, games, and video games. Leslie is newly married to her husband, Jay, and family time is the most important! They love to go camping, fishing, play Legos, and just hang out with one another.

Daniel Hartley, All-State Transportation Chair Daniel Hartley is in his third year as Band Director at Lakeridge High School where he instructs the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Lab, Percussion Ensemble, Athletic Bands, Musical Pit, and teaches AP Music Theory. He also serves as the Tri-M Music Honors Society advisor and the Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA) advisor. In his free time Daniel plays Principal Trombone and serves on the Board of the Portland Wind Symphony, plays trombone in the Millennium Band, and teaches private music lessons. Prior to teaching at Lakeridge, Daniel taught for seven years at Kelso High School in Kelso, WA and served as the District Music Coordinator for Kelso School District and the President of the Southwest Washington Music Educators Association (SWWMEA). In 2017 Daniel was recognized as Kelso School District’s Secondary Teacher of the Year. Daniel earned his Bachelor of Music in Music Education (2013) and his Master of Music Education (2014) from the University of Oregon School of Music and Dance. Outside of music he serves on the Board for LO for Love and is the co-lead for Lake Oswego’s first Pride Festival in 2024. He lives with his husband, André, and two cats, Gizmo and Gadget, in SE Portland.

Randy Solansky, All-State Equipment Manager Randy Solansky is in his sixth year as Director of Band and Choir at Memorial Middle School in the Greater Albany Public Schools District in Albany Oregon. Prior to his time at Memorial Middle School, he taught a year of middle school band at Joseph Lane Middle School in Roseburg, Oregon and two years of Band and choir at Douglas High School in Winston Oregon. Douglas High School, both his band and choir qualified and performed at the OSAA State Championships. Mr. Solansky is a proud graduate of Oregon State University. While a graduate student, he served as a graduate teaching assistant to Dr. Chris Chapman. Randy has been an active member of the OMEA planning team as equipment manager since 2017. He also teaches at several summer band camps each year and is on staff for the Oregon Ambassadors of Music.

Tristan Weitkamp, CNAfME Student Volunteer Coordinator Tristan is currently serving as Band Director at Sherwood High School alongside Brant Stai. He previously served in the role of Interim Director of Bands and full-time Visiting Instructor of Music at Portland State University, following the retirement of Pat Vandehey. Tristan earned both a Master’s in Music with a focus on Instrumental Conducting and a Master’s in Education from Portland State. Prior to his graduate studies, Tristan taught numerous jazz ensembles, marching ensembles, and small jazz combo groups across the Beaverton and Hillsboro school districts. Tristan’s bachelor’s is in Jazz Studies, also from Portland State University, where he studied with George Colligan and Darrell Grant. Following, he attended the University of Cape Town for post-bachelorate studies in music, and global affairs. He now seeks to balance his teaching, conducting, and performing aspirations with raising his baby daughter Aria with wife Melody, and their two dogs.

Tiffany Hitz, Conductor Tiffany Hitz is Director of Middle School Bands at Robinson Secondary School in Fairfax County, VA. She received her Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Virginia Commonwealth University and her Master of Music in Music Education from Boston University. Mrs. Hitz maintains an active schedule as a clinician, guest conductor, and adjudicator throughout the United States, and has been teaching in Fairfax County, VA since 2001, where she recently completed a tenure as Secondary Fine and Performing Arts Coach for their Teacher Induction Program, Great Beginnings: The Next Generation. A member of the Virginia Music Educators Association, Mrs. Hitz is currently on the state’s New Music Grading Committee and Conference Registration Staff and chairs the Assessment Adjudicator Training committee for the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association. She is also a member of Women Band Directors International and has been published in and served as the Elementary Editor of their official journal, Woman Conductor. Mrs. Hitz received the Outstanding Music Education Alumni Award from VCU School of the Arts in 2018. She is an inducted member of Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity and American School Band Directors Association and was previously recognized by the School Band and Orchestra Magazine as one of the “Fifty Directors Who Make a Difference”. She is a National Board Certified Teacher and O M E A JANUARY 2024

previous nominee for the Grammy Music Educator Award. Mrs. Hitz currently serves as the Virginia State Chair of the National Band Association and the administrator for the Dr. William P. Foster Music Education Alliance “Award of Excellence”. She was recently elected to the National Band Association Board of Directors as a Middle School Representative. Mrs. Hitz continues to teach privately and perform as a hornist and is a regular member of the Fairfax Wind Symphony. She spends her summers teaching at music camps including UNCG’s Summer Music Camp, the University of Maine’s Summer Youth Music Camp, and the Middle School Concert Band Camp at the Music for All Summer Symposium.

Ann McBride, Ensemble Manager Ann McBride has been teaching instrumental music for 28 years in Oregon and Minnesota. She holds a B.S. in Music Education from Minnesota State University - Moorhead and a Master’s Degree in Education from Lesley University. She has served as secretary of OMEA District II and is currently a manager for the OMEA All-State Middle School Band. Ann has been active in organizing band and solo festivals for OMEA District 2 and has recently begun working as a clinician and guest conductor for area festivals and honor bands. She has also worked extensively on band curriculum and assessment for the GreshamBarlow School District Ann is currently in her 22nd year teaching band and world music at West Orient Middle School in Gresham, Oregon. When Ann is not teaching, you will find her running, hiking and taking adventures with her Australian cattle dog, Riley. Ann and her husband John love to travel around the country and the world. They are self-proclaimed foodies and are always on the hunt for their next amazing meal. When she is home, she enjoys time with her cats and researching the next travel adventure.

Jenna Gagne, Ensemble Manager Jenna Gagne lives in Gresham, OR, and is in her sixth year as Director of Bands at Gordon Russell Middle School and 12th year in the Gresham-Barlow School District, where she teaches Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced Bands, Jazz Band, and a world music class. Mrs. Gagne graduated from Oregon State University with a Bachelor of Music degree in 2011 and a Master of Arts in Teaching degree in 2012. In addition to teaching at Northwest Band Camps, and Mid-Valley Band Camps, Mrs. Gagne also organizes band festivals and other music events, in addition to her years of assisting in the managing of the Oregon Middle School All-State Band. Mrs. Gagne also strives to keep up her flute and piccolo chops by playing as often as she can, including playing in the Tabor Wind Ensemble. 22

When Mrs. Gagne is not involved in her musical endeavors, you will find her snowboarding with her husband Justin on the slopes of Mt. Hood, paddle-boarding and hiking throughout the Northwest, enjoying time on the Coast, loving on her wooly husky Achilles, and heading back to her native Canada as often as possible.

Angela Woo, Conductor Angela Woo is Director of Instrumental Music at John Adams Middle School in Santa Monica, California where nearly 300 students comprise three concert bands and three string orchestras. The John Adams ensembles have consistently earned the highest possible ratings at performance festivals. In 2011, the John Adams Middle School Wind Ensemble was selected to perform at the inaugural California All-State Music Education Conference as the only middle school concert band in the state to be so honored. In addition, Ms. Woo is Music Director of Pacific Symphony Youth Concert Band (Orange County, California). This ensemble is a part of Pacific Symphony Youth Ensembles, one of the largest pre-professional music training programs in the nation, nurturing and inspiring young musicians in grades 6 through 12. For over 25 years, Ms. Woo has enjoyed an active schedule as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator with numerous honor groups, conducting symposia, and music festivals throughout the United States and internationally. Angela Woo was the first woman to conduct at the 1992 XIV New Music Forum in Mexico City; she premiered the music of Karel Husa, Vincent Persichetti, George Crumb and William Schuman. In 2018, Ms. Woo was guest conductor at the State Honours Ensemble

Program at the Queensland Conservatorium (Griffith University) in Brisbane, Australia. At the national level, Ms. Woo has been invited by several universities to lead professional development workshops for music educators at the elementary and secondary levels. Her guest conducting invitations have included All-State honor bands and orchestras at the middle school and high school levels in Kentucky, Oregon, Michigan, Colorado, California, and Georgia. Ms. Woo was invited to join the WorldStrides Honors Performance Series to conduct the 2019 and 2022 Middle School Orchestra as well as the 2020 High School Symphony Orchestra in Carnegie Hall (New York). An alumna of the University of California, Los Angeles, Ms. Woo holds the degrees Bachelor of Arts in Music Education and Piano Performance, Master of Education, and Master of Fine Arts in Conducting. She also holds the Master of Arts in Educational Administration from California State University, Northridge. Prior to her appointment to John Adams Middle School in 1995, Ms. Woo was Director of Music at Corona del Mar High School in Orange County, California where she led the band, orchestra, choral, and jazz ensembles. She also served as conductor of the Santa Monica College Wind Ensemble during the 1995-96 season. Ms. Woo is a staunch advocate for music education at all levels. She has been recognized and honored as the 2005 Santa Monica-Malibu District Teacher of the Year by the Santa Monica Rotary Club. In 2012, the John Philip Sousa National Foundation awarded Ms. Woo the Legion of Honor Laureate, honoring band directors with outstanding music programs. The Education Through Music - Los Angeles Foundation presented Ms. Woo with its 2019 Shining Star Award which recognizes excellence in music education. In 2020, the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association honored Ms. Woo with its Gold Award in recognition of her long-time service to music education.

Mac Mayer, Ensemble Manager Mac Mayer is Orchestra Director at Whiteaker Middle School and feeder elementary schools in Keizer, Oregon. He holds undergraduate degrees in Music Performance and Music Education from The Ohio State University and a Master of Music Education from the University of Kansas. Prior to teaching in the Salem-Keizer School District Mr. Mayer taught orchestra in Olathe, Kansas, as well as communities in Georgia and Ohio. Mr. Mayer is honored to serve today as the Chair for the Oregon Middle School All-state Orchestra. Mr. Mayer is a certified orchestra adjudicator for the state of Oregon, and works frequently as an adjudicator, clinician, and conductor throughout the state and region. Recent honor orchestras include the Middle School Honor Orchestra in Bend, Oregon, D14 Middle School Honor Orchestra in West-Linn and Wilsonville, and Northeast Kansas Middle Level Honor Orchestra. Mr. Mayer also conducts the Amadeus Orchestra as part of the Salem Youth Symphony program. Mr. Mayer is married to Brigid Mayer, Orchestra Director at North Salem High 28

School in Salem, Oregon. His son Eben played cello through high school and is currently studying wildlife biology at the University of Montana, his other son Noah plays violin for South Salem High School’s Chamber Orchestra and Symphony, and youngest daughter Helen shows a variety of musical abilities at a young age! Mr. Mayer is thrilled to serve as your Chair and looks forward to providing many more opportunities to students through music!

Myriam Gendron-Dupont, Ensemble Manager Myriam is the Orchestra Director at Rosemont Ridge Middle School in the West Linn-Wilsonville School District. She is a native French speaker from Quebec, Canada and is certified to teach Music and French. Myriam is a lifelong cellist and always knew she would follow a career path embedded in the music world. She attended Portland State University on a full scholarship and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music and a Masters in Education. She obtained her teaching license and has worked over 15 years in the public education system, teaching elementary general music, choir and orchestra, as well as middle school choir, orchestra, guitar and French. She is currently attending PSU again to earn a second Masters in Curriculum and Instruction. Today Myriam teaches middle school orchestra and guitar, private lessons on the cello, and occasionally performs in orchestras, weddings and other events. She lives in Oregon City with her husband James; their only daughter Isabelle is a student at Portland State University, where she is studying Business and minoring in Art. Myriam is very excited to be back the OMEA team as MS Orchestra Chair this year, and is thrilled to be a part of this wonderful event. She has enjoyed working with her colleagues to create an unforgettable experience for the students and their families.

Reginal Wright, Conductor Reginal Wright is a composer, conductor, and educator who creates works in collaboration with choirs and music educators. As an educator, Reginal has earned many awards over the span of his over 20 year career. Reginal has performed throughout Europe and the United States. As a conductor, he is a soughtafter clinician in both middle and high school. As a composer, Reginal’s works have been commissioned by middle school, high school, college, and professional choirs. His works have been performed by All-State Choirs and invited convention choirs. His “Invictus” was performed in the 2021 ACDA National Convention and by the 2022 Texas All-State Tenor/Bass Choir. Reginal’s works are published and distributed through BriLee, Carl Fisher, Graphite, Hal Leonard, Oxford University Press, Santa Barbara Music Publishing, Walton, and his own publishing company, Reginal Wright Music. Reginal resides in Arlington, Texas.

Danika Locey, Ensemble Manager Danika Locey is the director of choirs at Leslie Middle School in the Salem-Keizer School District, where she teaches choir, leadership, and Unified Music. She started her career in Medford, Oregon, where she also taught beginning band. Danika serves on the OMEA state board as the Recording Secretary and on the Oregon ACDA board as the Soprano Alto Choir Chair. As an educator, Danika is passionate about providing her students with a safe space to take musical risks and developing curricula that provide students effective and engaging access to music literacy at all levels. She received both her Bachelor of Arts in Choral Music Education and her Master of Arts in Teaching from Oregon State University, where she studied with Dr. Steven Zielke and Dr. Sandra Babb. In addition to her duties as a choir director, Danika also enjoys serving as a church musician with St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Salem, where she is also involved with the Filipino community choir. Danika is a devoted cat parent and avid college football fan, and when she isn’t teaching she enjoys sewing, crocheting, and spending time with her large and lovable family.

Kent Wilson, Ensemble Manager Kent is in his 8th year of teaching, currently at Whitford Middle School in Beaverton, teaching choir for grades 6-8. He previously taught Band, Choir, and Theater for grades 7-12. His student groups at the high school level have performed at OSAA State Choir, Solo and Ensemble, and State Thespian events. He is a member of OMEA, ACDA, and the Portland Alumni Chapter of Mu Phi Epsilon. He also sings with Willamette Master Chorus, and is an active musician for musical theater productions. When not doing music, he’s probably in the kitchen cooking the latest recipe he saved on Tik Tok or Instagram.

Cindy Mair, Accompanist Cindy Mair retired in 2016 from a rewarding 36-year career teaching K-12 music in public education. Her specialties included elementary classroom music in addition to middle and high school choral instruction. An Oregon native, Cindy received her BA in Music Education from Oregon State University and later her masters in administrative leadership from Concordia University. Her favorite assignment has always been that of a collaborative pianist. She has accompanied many ensembles and soloists both at the local and state level. Cindy accompanied the Portland Symphonic Girlchoir from 2016-2022. She currently plays for the Milwaukie Lutheran Choir and Tilikum Choir Community under the direction of John Baker. In 2022, Cindy joined the artistic staff of the Oregon

Repertory Singers Youth Choir under the direction of Aubrey Patterson. She is thrilled to return as the collaborative pianist for this years’ Tenor/Bass Middle School All-State Choir!

Amy Voorhees, Conductor Dr. Amy Voorhees is the Director of Choral Activities at Susquehanna University and holds the Cyril M. Stretansky Professorship in Choral Music. Dr. Voorhees conducts the University Choir and Chamber Singers and teaches courses in Choral Conducting, Choral Methods, and supervises student teachers. Voorhees was recently appointed to the CORO/ Simpson College Summer Master’s in Choral Conducting Program as a resident conducting faculty member. She teaches conducting lessons, leads masterclasses, presents seminars, produces concerts, and assists in the Choral Literature course each summer. A graduate of Michigan State University and a University Distinguished Fellow, Dr. Voorhees holds a B.M. degree in Vocal Performance from Simpson College, has a Music Education certificate from Iowa State University, and a Master’s Degree in Administration and Educational Leadership from Drake University. Prior to her studies at MSU, Voorhees taught public school for over fifteen years with experience at the Elementary, Middle and High School levels. supervised staff and accompanists while overseeing eleven different choral ensembles, including very successful show and jazz choir programs. During her tenure, the A Cappella Choir was invited to sing at the 2015 American Choral Director’s Association National Conference in Salt Lake City, UT. Dr. Voorhees is in demand as a clinician, guest conductor, and presenter. She has worked with choirs and conducted festivals in Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Colorado, Virginia, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Maryland and Pennsylvania. Her presentations and workshop sessions have been shared at colleges, universities, and numerous ACDA and NAfME state conferences. Most recently, the Susquehanna University Choir was invited to perform at the Eastern ACDA Conference in Boston, Massachusetts in February of 2022. She is a member of NafMe and the American Choral Directors Association serving on the Pennsylvania-ACDA executive board as the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Coordinator. She previously served on the state ACDA Board of Directors for Iowa and the Michigan State Vocal Music Association as Coordinator of Student Activities.

Suvi Mirka, Ensemble Manager Suvi Mirka lives in Portland, OR, was born in South Korea but grew up in the metro area. Suvi is the director of choirs at Gordon Russell Middle School in the Gresham Barlow School District. At Gordon Russell she teaches 5 choirs and Strategies for Success. She received her undergraduate degree from George Fox University in Music Education and vocal performance, and then pursued her Masters in Teaching at Portland State University. She did a year of post baccalaureate work at Portland State before her masters to focus on choral conducting, vocal pedagogy, and sang in the PDX Jazz Choir. Suvi has been the OMEA All-State Treble Choir manager for the last four years, and has greatly enjoyed working to help our students have a wonderful time at All-State. She also serves as the middle school choral chair for District 2. Recently Suvi has been asked to clinic and judge and she has greatly enjoyed the opportunity to work with other choirs. Suvi is passionate about creating a safe space for students to learn how to be the best version of themselves through community and music. Suvi loves teaching choir, sharing the joy of learning, and could not have made it to where she is today without her wonderful mentors, friends, and family. When Suvi is not teaching she loves serving as a musician at her church playing guitar and singing. She also has a majestic cat named Joe, and when she isn’t working she loves to try new restaurants, play pickleball, and drink a good cup of coffee.

Melinda Murdock, Ensemble Manager Melinda Murdock is in her 23rd year teaching choral studies at Jackson Middle School in Portland, Oregon. She has earned degrees from Nova Southeastern University (M.A.) and Idaho State University (B.A). While attending ISU, she studied choral conducting with Dr. Scott Anderson and participated in numerous international choral tours, including England, Central Europe, Italy, Greece, and Brazil. She also worked with the late Weston Noble, in Idaho and Brazil, as a model for correct choral technique. Except for the two pandemic years, her auditioned Ensemble Choir has participated the past 22 years in Worldstrides Heritage Festivals, including nine times in their Festival of Gold in New York City, Washington D.C., and Nashville. Her Concert Choir performed at the Oregon All-State convention in 2020, and they consistently rank in the top five at the Best in the Northwest Choral Festival. In demand as a clinician and adjudicator, Melinda was also nominated for the prestigious Oregon Music Educator of the Year award (2006) and was named Teacher of the Year by the Portland Parent Teacher Association (2007). Melinda is a trained classical singer and maintains a vocal studio, with her students often ranking in the top ten at the state level. She strives to instill in her students a lifelong love of music.

Angela Hjertstedt, Accompanist Angela Hjertstedt was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. She entered an undergraduate degree in Vocal Performance from Portland State University, followed by a Master’s degree in Education, also at PSU. She won the “Young Artists: Live at the Schnitz” competition, soloing with members of the Oregon Symphony, as well as the collegiate level of the National Association of Teachers in Singing (NATS) competition in Oregon. She continues to perform frequently as a vocalist and pianist around the Portland area, and sang with the professional group “Choro in Scuola” for 6 years. She is also frequently hired to accompany soloists and choirs around the state. She has taught private voice and piano lessons for over 20 years, as well as been involved in church music ministry at local and regional levels. She is an active member of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) as well as the Oregon Music Educators Association (OMEA). Angela now teaches middle school choir, and her choirs have won many accolades under her direction. She lives in Happy Valley, Oregon with her husband and two teenage sons.

Coty Raven-Morris, Conductor Coty Raven Morris is a proud alumnus of Texas State UniversitySan Marcos where she studied with Drs. Lynn Brinckmeyer and Joey Martin. She received her Masters of Music in Choral Conducting from Michigan State University in the Spring of 2020 under Drs. David Rayl, Jonathan Reed, and Sandra Snow. She is currently the Hinckley Visiting Assistant Professor of Choir, Music Education, and Social Justice at Portland State University. Prior to this, she was the Director of Choirs at Crosby High School in the Houston area and has served as the Outreach Choir Director at the MSU Community Music School and Music Director at Grand Ledge United Methodist Church. Her choirs received consistent Sweepstakes and Division I ratings at UIL and choral festivals. Morris was the recipient of the Hays CISD Linebarger Academic Recognition Award for 2013 and Galena Park ISD’s Dazzling Diamond Award in 2014, 2016, 2017, and 2018 for outstanding mentorship and leadership in her field. She is the Northwest Choral representative for the National Association for Music Education as well as the Community Choir Chair for Northwest region of the American Choral Directors Association. Her most recent acknowledgments include being a nominee for the O M E A JANUARY 2024

Portland State University George C Hoffman Faculty award as well as a Quarterfinalist for the 2023 Music Educators Grammy! A newly published author and composer, Morris is a sought after clinician and speaker across the country. She has recently served as the Clinician and Headliner for Florida ACDA, Washington MEA, and Minnesota ACDA as well as the Keynote speaker for the city of Lake Oswego’s Juneteenth festival. She also serves as the Community Choir Chair for the NW American Choral Directors Association and the Choral Chair for the National Association for Music Education. Her future engagements include serving as the Keynote Speaker for the National Kodaly Conference and the Oklahoma All-State Middle School Treble Choir. Morris has been a choir member of the South Texas Vocal Artists and Mirabai and has devoted over a decade of summers to working as a camp director at the Texas State, Northeastern, and Lamar University summer camps. She is currently the camp Director for the Oregon Repertory Singers Summer Sing Camp. Coty Raven-Morris the Founder of Being Human Together, a budding community rooted in music education striving to normalize difficult topics in our field through conversation and connection. BHT seeks to discuss traditionally taboo topics like mental health, systemic oppression, diversity, and inclusivity. And… She is also an avid boxer!

John Hillan-Payne, Ensemble Manager John Hillan-Payne is delighted to be manager of the 2024 OMEA Elementary All-State Choir. With 20 years of directing children’s choirs, teaching classroom music, and presenting teacher workshops, he seeks to instill in students a lifelong passion for music through fun and rigorous experiences in singing songs and games, playing instruments, and movement. He graduated from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music with a Bachelor of Music Education degree (2004) and earned a Master’s in Teaching degree from Portland State University (2009). Further trainings include Orff-Schulwerk and Kodály philosophies, as well as National Board Certification. In 2016, he was the recipient of the OMEA Outstanding Music Educator award. He works to strengthen music education in Oregon by serving on several boards and committees; he is a Past President of Southern Washington and Oregon Kodály Educators (SWOKE) and has been Elementary Chair for the Oregon Music Education Association. Mr. Hillan-Payne has taught in the West Linn-Wilsonville School District since 2004, and is currently the music teacher at Lowrie Primary School and artistic director of the Wilsonville Choral Arts Society Children’s Choir.

Allison Hedgepeth, Ensemble Manager Allison Hedgepeth has taught elementary music for 21 years in Kansas, California, and Oregon. For the last 16 years she has been teaching at Forest Hills Elementary in Lake Oswego, OR. Allison graduated from Kansas State with a Bachelors of Music Education and Portland State University with a Masters of Music 46

in Education. Allison has completed the first level of Orff training and all four levels of Kodaly training. She is currently the All-State Elementary Honor Choir Manager, OMEA District 14 Elementary Honor Choir Manager, and was the 2023 Oregon Music Educators Association “Excellence in Elementary Music Education” award recipient.

Vicki Brabham, Accompanist Vicki Brabham is a native to the Willamette Valley and has established herself as one of the most in-demand accompanists, arrangers, and solo guest artists in the area. A graduate of Bushnell University (and loyal Duck fan), Vicki is the Music Specialist at Oak Hill Independent School, staff musician at First Congregational Church, accompanies the Women’s Choral Society, is a founding member of the Shedd Institute’s “Emerald City Jazz Kings”, and appears frequently with Eugene Concert Choir, Eugene Symphony Orchestra, along with numerous local school and community theatrical productions.

Jarrad Harris, Conductor A native of Louisville, Kentucky, saxophonist and educator Jarrard Harris attended the DuPont Manual/Youth Performing Arts School High School and attended the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music to pursue a degree in jazz studies. At CCM he studied with Rick VanMatre, Pat Harbison, and Marc Fields. Upon Graduation from CCM Harris moved to Chicago in 1998 to attend DePaul University where under the tutelage of Bob Lark, Tim Coffman, and Marc Colby he earned his master’s degree in jazz studies. Harris currently lives in Chicago, where he served on the jazz faculties of Northwestern University, Columbia College Chicago and the City Colleges of Chicago. He also serves as the director of jazz studies with the Chicago Public Schools Advanced Arts Education Program at Gallery 37. He maintains an active private teaching studio in addition to serving as a director, clinician, guest artist and adjudicator at college and high school festivals, and state band festivals. He has performed in the United States and abroad at numerous jazz festivals and performed with jazz artists Jon Faddis Big Band, Barry Harris, Joe Magnarelli, Nicholas Payton, Joe Lovano, Claudia Acuna, Jimmy Heath, Brian Lynch, Antonio Hart, Bobby Watson, Benny Green, Eric Reed, Stefon Harris, The Chicago O M E A JANUARY 2024

Jazz Ensemble, the Chicago Sinfonietta, Sean Jones, Sharel Cassity, Eric Alexander, and Johnny Griffin to name a few. He has performed at the Goodman and Court Theater in the musicals “Ain’t Misbehavin’” and “Five Guys Named Moe”. Jarrard was a founding board member of the Jazz Education Network and serves as a current board member for the Jazz Institute of Chicago. Jarrard plays Vandoren saxophone Reeds and mouthpieces and is currently a Vandoren Performing Artist.

Cory Francis, Ensemble Manager Cory Francis grew up in Salem, OR and received a degree in Music Education from the University of Oregon in June 2020. He has previously taught in the Banks School District and SalemKeizer School District teaching band, marching/pep band, jazz band, choir, and SPED music. He is currently the Director of Bands and Choirs at Taft 7-12 School in Lincoln City, OR. His primary instruments are the trombone and electric/upright bass. Outside of music, his hobbies include basketball, hiking, and going on walks at the beach.

Robby Carr, Ensemble Manager Robby Carr is currently in his third year of teaching as the Director of Band and Choir at Newport Middle and Newport High School. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from the University of Oregon. He is the OMEA District 11 Chair, a board member for the Newport Symphony, and the Co-Percussion Director for the Oregon Ambassadors of Music. Robby lives in Newport with his fiancée and two cats, enjoying his hobbies of stamp collecting and hiking.

Arris Golden, Conductor Dr. Arris Golden is the Assistant Director of Bands and Associate Director of the Spartan Marching Band at Michigan State University. In this capacity, Dr. Golden teaches courses in conducting, marching band techniques, conducts the Spartan Youth Wind Symphony, is coordinator of the MSU Performing Arts Camps, and assists with all aspects of the athletic band program. Before joining the faculty at Michigan State University, Dr. Golden was a member of the conducting faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to her collegiate appointments, Dr. Golden had a distinguished 18-year teaching career in the public schools of North Carolina. In her last public school assignment, Dr. Golden conducted the premiere of four commissioned works that have become standards in the middle school band repertoire: “Kitsune: The Fox Spirits,” by Brian Balmages (2009), “The Machine Awakes” for young band and electronics by Steven Bryant (2012), “Freight Train,” by Pierre LaPlante (2013), and “The Cave Your Fear” by Michael Markowski (2014). Dr. Golden maintains an active schedule with engagements throughout the United States and internationally as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator. Dr. Golden O M E A JANUARY 2024

has also shared presentations at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, Michigan Music Conference, the North Carolina Music Educators Conference, and the Virginia Music Educators Conference based on her research interests: undergraduate music education preparation, conductor decision-making, repertoire selection and programming, and the student teaching and mentorship experience. Dr. Golden has worked with a number of notable composers in the preparation and performance of their works for the wind band medium. Recent and future artistic collaborations include Brian Balmages, David Biedenbender, Tyler S. Grant, Peter Meechan, Aaron Perinne, Alex Shapiro, Erika Svanoe, and Omar Thomas. Dr. Golden’s professional affiliations include the College Band Directors National Association and the National Band Association; she also serves on the Board of Directors of the National Band Association and as Chairperson of the National Band Association’s Selective Music List Committee. Dr. Golden holds degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She completed the Doctor of Musical Arts in wind conducting from Michigan State University as a 2014 recipient of a Michigan State University Distinguished Fellowship.

Frank Petrik, Ensemble Manager Frank Petrik has been an educator for 24 years in Oregon. He has taught at Beaumont Middle School, John F. Kennedy High, Sherwood High, Silverton High School and Ron Russell Middle School. His programs have demonstrated great success in all areas of performance. He is an Oregon Band Director Association certified adjudicator, past OMEA Advocacy Chair, District 4 Band Chair, District 14 Band Chair and is the current OBDA president elect. Frank lives in Silverton, Oregon with his partner Amanda and their 2 children Charles and Cecelia.

Kevin Soon, Ensemble Manager Kevin Soon has served as the Director of Instrumental Music at Liberty High School in Hillsboro since 2007. Prior to his appointment at Liberty, he taught band and choir in the public schools of Cave Junction, Oregon. He holds a Master of Arts in Teaching degree from Western Oregon University and a Bachelor of Science in Music degree from the University of Oregon. He has proudly served as the Music Director of the Tualatin Valley Community Band since 2015. Mr. Soon is a member of the National Association for Music Education, Oregon Music Education Association and the Oregon Band Directors Association, where he serves as the Northwest Region Representative. He has served on the board of the Oregon Music Education Association and as President of the Northwest Association for the Performing Arts. He lives in Portland with his wife and three children. 56

Andrea Ramsey, Conductor Dr. Andrea Ramsey enjoys an international presence as a composer, conductor, scholar, and music educator. Her teaching experiences range from work with adolescent and children’s voices to high school and collegiate voices. She enjoys regular opportunities to conduct all-state and divisional level honor choirs, festival events at Carnegie Hall, and serves as a principal conductor for the Pacific International Young Women’s Choral Festival in Eugene, Oregon. Before leaping into full time composing and guest conducting, Andrea held positions in music education and conducting at The Ohio State University and the University of Colorado, respectively. An ASCAPlus award-winning composer, Andrea believes strongly in the creation of new works. Her compositions are available with traditional publishers and also through MusicSpoke, a digital sheet music marketplace. She enjoys residency collaborations with ensembles and festival choirs, some of which have included: the Allegro Choirs of Kansas City, Ithaca College, and the Crescent City Choral Festival in New Orleans. As a scholar, she has presented for state, divisional, and national conventions of the American Choral Directors Association, the 6th Annual Symposium on Sociology O M E A JANUARY 2024

in Music Education, as well as The Phenomenon Singing Symposium in St. Johns, Newfoundland, Canada. She has co-authored articles published in the Choral Journal, as well as the Journal of Research in Music Education. A native of Arkansas, she has experienced in her own life the power of music to provide a sense of community, better understanding of our humanity, and rich opportunities for self-discovery.

Robert Hawthorne, Ensemble Manager Robert Hawthorne serves as choir director at Tigard High School, directing five choirs and pop vocal studio. A graduate of Whitworth University, Robert has directed choirs and musical theater productions for the last 29 years and served as a church music director, primarily in the Episcopal Church. Robert composed and published the Portland Psalter for the Episcopal Church which is widely used throughout the country. An avid supporter of inclusion in the choral classroom, Robert works to foster community among all students including those with diverse needs and identities. Along with his passion for gardening, Robert finds time to tandem bike ride with his son, Isaac, and enjoys kayaking and cooking with his wife, Wendy.

Andrew Bergh, Ensemble Manager Andrew Bergh is in his fourth year as the Choir Director at Tualatin High School in the Tigard-Tualatin School District. His directing responsibilities include four choirs and being the on-stage musical director. He spent the previous four years teaching choirs at the junior high and high school in the Tillamook School District while also directing the Tillamook Community Chorus. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education and Vocal Performance at George Fox University. In addition to teaching, he performs with multiple ensembles including Male Ensemble Northwest, Portland Symphonic Choir where he serves as tenor section leader, and the Portland Phoenix Choir. He is serving his second year on the OMEA Board as Membership Chair and Managing the 9th/10th grade All-State Honor Choir. In his spare time, Andrew enjoys spending time with his wife, Bobi, and their two dogs, Zuko and Mai, playing games with friends and family, and being a devout fan of the Portland Trail Blazers.

Hung-Yun Cho, Accompanist A native of Taiwan, Hung-Yun holds a Doctoral degree in Piano Performance from the University of Oregon, and a Masters degree from the Peabody Conservatory, and obtained her Bachelors from Soochow University in Taipei. She has been selected to perform in many competitions, including the International Taipei Piano Competition, and the Rachmaninoff International Piano Competition. In addition to being an active collaborator in Eugene, 62

she teaches music at Lane Community College and accompanies for the Choral Department at the University of Oregon, the Eugene Symphony Chorus, and the Oregon Bach Festival. She frequently serves as the Accompanist for the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) and the American Oregon Music Education Association (OMEA) Honor Choirs, and as an Adjudicator for the Oregon Music Teachers Association (OMTA). She is the Principal Keyboardist for Orchestra Next, and serves as the Acting Principal Keyboard for the Eugene Symphony Orchestra for the 2023-2024 season.

Jamie Nix, Conductor Jamie L. Nix is Director of Wind Ensembles, Professor of Music, and holds The Hal J. Gibson Distinguished Chair in Conducting at Columbus State University’s Schwob School of Music. Nix, the first recipient of the Sam and Jacquie Rawls Distinguished Music Professorship at CSU, conducts the Schwob Wind Ensemble and Wind Orchestra, heads the graduate wind band conducting program, and hosts the annual Schwob Conductors Workshop. Previous posts include Associate Director of Bands and the Donald R. Shepherd Assistant Professor of Conducting at the University of Michigan, where he was director of the Michigan Marching Band, and Assistant Director of Bands at The University of Texas-Austin. Under his direction, the Schwob Wind Ensemble has performed at the 2015 CBDNA National Conference, the 2012 CBDNA Southern Division Conference, and the 2018 and 2012 GMEA State Conferences. Nix has led performances with the World Youth Wind Symphony at Interlochen, the Eastman Wind Ensemble, United States Army Field Band, and for several international events including the Alberta International Band Festival, IDRS Conference, ITG Conference, and the ITF Conference. Nix has conducted All-State Bands in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Missouri, Texas, and Virginia, as well as the Music for All Summer Symposium and numerous honor bands in North America. In addition to teaching as a conducting symposium clinician O M E A JANUARY 2024

at LSU, Michigan State University, UMKC, University of Colorado-Boulder, and The University of Texas, Nix was the clinician alongside H. Robert Reynolds at the Reynolds Conducting Institute at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago, with the CSU Schwob Chamber Winds as the performance ensemble. As an orchestral conductor, he has led performances with the CSU Schwob Philharmonic, was music director of the Advanced Young Musicians String Orchestra in Coral Gables, FL, and in 2008 participated in the International Mahler/Brahms Conducting Festival with the Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic in the Czech Republic. Nix, elected into the prestigious American Bandmasters Association in 2016, holds a DMA degree in conducting from the University of Miami Frost School (Gary Green), two MM degrees, in trombone performance and conducting, from the University of Michigan (H. Robert Reynolds), and a Bachelor of Music Performance degree from Auburn University. Nix is a conductor or producer on the following CDs: Vital Signs (George Curran, New York Philharmonic), Atlanta Chamber Winds, Psychedelia (James Markey, Boston Symphony bass trombone), A Beautiful Noise (featuring trombonists Joseph Alessi, Charles Vernon, Paul Pollard, and others), Wolf Rounds, The Blue Album, Brooklyn Bridge, The Victors Valiant, and the Schwob Wind Ensemble CD entitled Prelude, Fugue, and Riffs, released on the Summit Records label in 2017.

Jennifer Bell, Ensemble Manager Jennifer Bell is the Director of Bands at Whiteaker Middle School. She is in her twenty-first year of teaching. Prior to joining the Salem-Keizer School District, she taught in Grants Pass Oregon at North Middle School for one year. Jennifer has taught 15 years at the middle school level and 7 years at the high school level. Her bands receive superior ratings, have been selected to perform at the OMEA Conference and have placed at the 6A state championships. She contributes to her field as a judge, clinician, honor band director, and manages festivals and the Salem-Keizer Honor Band. Jennifer has her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music education from the University of Oregon. She has been nominated for Music Educator of the Year by the Oregon Symphony Association in Salem in 2005, 2006, and 2008 and 2014. She is the President of OBDA, a member of Phi Beta Mu International Band Director Honorary Fraternity, OMEA, NAfME and has happily committed ten years to the OMEA conference planning team.

John Meyer, Ensemble Manager JJ Meyer has spent his entire teacher career in the Salem-Keizer School District. Since the fall of 2019 he has served as Director of Bands at South Salem High School. Prior to his appointment at South Salem, he was the Director of Bands at McKay High School from 2014-2019. A native Oregonian, JJ grew up in Portland and 68

is a graduate of David Douglas High School. He received both his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in music from Oregon State University. JJ has maintained a private trombone studio throughout his teaching career. He resides in Salem with his wife Allie, and two sons Elliot and Ethan.

Tim Seelig, Conductor Tim Seelig is a conductor, speaker, author and educator. He is the Conductor Laureate of the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus and Conductor Emeritus of the Turtle Creek Chorale in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Seelig holds four degrees, including a Diploma from the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria and Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of North Texas. He has seven books and DVDs on choral technique, several best-sellers, and his memoir, was published in 2020. He made his operatic debut in St. Gallen, Switzerland and had been conducting at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center for 30 years. He has conducted over 50 recordings which have been on Billboard Top Ten and iTunes Top Ten classical charts. His choruses have been the topic of three documentaries. The first PBS documentary was awarded the Emmy for best documentary. The most recent had its world premiere and Audience Favorite at the Tribecca Film Festival and O M E A JANUARY 2024

is streaming on Paramount +. He has commissioned major choral works for 35 years. Some of these include the first AIDS Requiem, When We No Longer Touch; Sing for the Cure for the Komen Foundation featuring Dr. Maya Angelou; “Testimony,” by Stephen Schwartz and the 2022 “Songs of the Phoenix” by Andrew Lippa, Stephen Schwartz and Stephen Sondheim. Aside from guest-conducting, he has now traded in his podium for the speaking stage. From winning Moth to his upcoming TEDx Talk, University convocations to keynotes, he is enjoying facing the audience for a change. Fun facts: he conducted the Guinness Book of World Records Longest Choral Concert and carried the Olympic torch as a community Hero. He has not run since. He is the proud grandfather of the amazing Clara Skye, Eden Mae, Cora Rose, Ivy Hope.

Joshua Weir, Ensemble Manager Joshua Weir is the Director of choirs at Kraxberger Middle School and Gladstone High School. He earned his bachelor of Music Education from Warner Pacific University and his Master of Music in Choral Conducting from Portland State University. Mr. Weir’s middle school choirs have won awards from the music in the parks program and his high school choir made it to the Oregon State Choir Championships in 2019. Mr. Weir’s Jazz Choir has also won numerous awards from the CCC Vocal Jazz Festival. Outside of teaching Mr. Weir sings in the Oregon Repertory Singers and is the associate conductor for Unistus Chamber Choir. During his tenure as Assistant Conductor he has had the opportunity to travel to numerous US cities for the West Coast Estonian Days and has traveled twice to Estonian to participate in Laulupidu (Song Party) where he sang in a choir of 35,000 voices. Mr. Weir has also sung in the Portland Opera Chorus, Portland Symphonic Choir, and Novum Chamber Singers.

Luis Rivera, Ensemble Manager Luis Rivera is in his third year as Choral Director for the Woodburn High School choirs. Before Woodburn, he also taught general music classes at Laurel Elementary in Junction City for two years. Rivera earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education at the University of Oregon. There, he sang with the University of Oregon’s Chamber choir and University Singers. He also studied viola performance and played in the UO Symphony Orchestra. Outside of teaching, he is very involved with music around the Community. He has sung with the Willamette master chorus in Salem and is currently singing with the Portland-based choral Chamber group In Medio. Some of Rivera’s passions include bringing the love and joy of singing to migrant 72

students at his school and giving his students a choir music education in both Spanish and English.

Lauren Servias, Accompanist Lauren Servias has performed with Tacoma Opera, the Oregon Festival of American Music, Eugene Ballet, Cascadia Concert Opera, Northwest Opera In Schools Etc. (NOISE), Lark Opera, and Seattle Civic Dance Theatre, among other performing arts organizations. Servias taught on the Oregon State University music faculty from 2012 to 2021, serving as the music director for OSU Opera, instructor of group piano and accompanying, and pianist for Bella Voce and the Corvallis-OSU Symphony. She now is an in-demand freelance pianist, adjudicator, and lecturer. Servias holds a Master of Music degree in Collaborative Piano Performance from the University of Oregon and a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance from Central Washington University.

Kira Omelchenko, Conductor Winner of the International Conductors Workshop and Competition, Dr. Kira Omelchenko is the Associate Dean of Performance and Recruitment, Associate Professor of Music, and the Conductor of the Symphony Orchestra at Wilfrid Laurier University Faculty of Music. She has been selected for a prestigious Fulbright Scholar Award for 2023-24 where she will be residing in New Zealand for five months conducting, teaching, mentoring students, collaborating with local composers, and conducting research in the National Library of New Zealand. During her Fulbright, she will be a visiting scholar and artist-in-residence at The New Zealand School of Music—Te Kōkī, at Victoria University, in Wellington, New Zealand. Dr. Omelchenko is the 2022 winner of the Ernst Bacon Memorial Award for the Performance of American Music, a 2022 finalist in the National American Prize in Music virtual concert production category and is a past prize winner in Opera O M E A JANUARY 2024

Conducting category. Upcoming conducting engagements include Carnegie Hall, the Vienna Opera Academy, Orlando All-County Orchestra, and conducting residencies in Thailand, South Korea, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, British Columbia, and Hawaii. As the 2017 winner of the International Institute for Conductors in Bulgaria, Dr. Omelchenko conducted the Vidin State Philharmonic Orchestra in a Concerto Festival and was invited back to guest conduct in their 2017-18 season. In the summers of 2019 and 2018, she served as artist in residence and guest conductor at the University of Aveiro (Portugal) where she mentored graduate conducting students and conducted the University Orchestra. During her residency in Portugal she was also a guest lecturer and conducting mentor at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Castilla y León in Salamanca, Spain. In addition, she served as the string director at the International Opera Performing Experience Festival in Mercatello sul Metauro (Italy) in July 2019. Additional guest conducting appearances include conducting the 2021 Florida All-State Honors Orchestra, Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, Waterloo Chamber Players, the Gwinnett Symphony Chamber Symphony (Georgia), the Imperial Symphony Orchestra (Florida), the Seasons Music Festival Orchestra in Yakima, Washington, and the Bulgarian State Opera in Burgas. In 2015 Dr. Omelchenko was selected to participate in a conducting festival in St. Petersburg, Russia where she conducted the orchestra in the historic Mariinsky Theatre. She has held international conducting fellowships and has studied in Vienna, Rotterdam and Amsterdam conservatories in the Netherlands and Bulgaria. She has also participated in conducting workshops with Gustav Meier, Ulrich Nicolai, and Harold Farberman. As an advocate for diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility, Dr. Omelchenko serves on the orchestra panel for And We Were Heard (AWWH), an organization that brings quality recordings of works by underrepresented composers, and is a mentor for Girls Who Conduct, a program that encourages the upcoming generation of women, women-identifying, and non-binary conductors. As a recipient of the Sigma Alpha Iota Conducting Scholarship, she has presented research at international, national, and state conferences including the International Conference on Arts and Humanities (IAFOR), The National Society for Experiential Education (NSEE), National Association for Music Education (NAfME), American String Teachers Association (ASTA), and Florida Music Education Association (FMEA). Her research has been published by Health Education Journal (HEJ) and International Arts and Humanities (IAFOR), and she has been a contributing author for Wenger Music Corporation. A native of Kansas, Dr. Omelchenko holds a bachelor’s degree in music and theatre from Knox College, a master’s degree in orchestral conducting from the University of New Mexico, and a doctoral degree in orchestral conducting from the University of Iowa, where she studied with William LaRue Jones.

Darian Todd, Ensemble Manager Darian Todd is a professional violist, violinist, and educator, who has been performing and teaching in Arizona and Oregon since 2008. He is currently the orchestra teacher at Lake Oswego Junior High School and District Program Coordinator for Elementary Strings in Lake Oswego, OR. Mr. Todd strives to provide students with the tools and skills necessary for an evolving and changing musical world; instill practices that create independent musicians; foster a love of life-long musicianship and sharing; and build a community of musicians who support their colleagues and respect their audiences. As an educator, Mr. Todd has studied and worked with String Pedagogues, and Rolland and Suzuki trainers including David Rife, Don Hamann, Dijana Ihas, Fritz Gearhart, Leslie Straka, and Lillian Manis, with Suzuki training in violin and viola books 1-4. Darian holds a Bachelor’s of Music Education from the University of Arizona, and a Master’s of Music in Performance with an emphasis in Violin and Viola Pedagogy. Through partnerships with the American String Teachers Association (ASTA), National Association for Music Educators (NAfME), Friends of Chamber Music Societies, and local Symphony Orchestras, Mr. Todd works to initiate more active involvement of students and parents in the artistic communities where he teaches, and advocates for the importance of music in our schools.

Kevin Rouse, Ensemble Manager Kevin Rouse is a graduate of the University of Maryland, where he received a degree in music education. As a bass trombonist, he studied under Matthew Guilford, the bass trombonist for the National Symphony Orchestra. Rouse received his masters through American Band College this past summer. Rouse is the instrumental music director at Lake Oswego High School in Lake Oswego, Oregon. Previously, he was the director at Thomas S. Wootton High School in Rockville, Maryland (2014 - 2018), and Northwest High School in Germantown, Maryland (2006 – 2014). His bands and orchestras have received consistent superior ratings at county and state festivals. Mr. Rouse’s marching bands, symphonic bands, and orchestras have also received multiple awards in Florida, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. Rouse has a thriving trombone/baritone studio. He also has adjudicated solo and ensemble festivals in several counties in Maryland and is a judge for the marching band circuit, NWAPA. He has enjoyed composing and arranging for his marching band and other schools around the country. He has composed for small ensembles and marching bands for the past 11 years. His music has won many “best music” awards for marching band. In 2017, the music he composed for Thomas S. Wootton High School won “best music” at the group 3A Maryland state competition and the US Bands National Championship. His music for Northwest High School also won “best music” at the Maryland state competition in the 2A group. O M E A JANUARY 2024
