GRAND MASTER’S MESSAGE

Service Award Celebrations T

he importance of presenting our Years of Service anniversary award has a lot more value than just giving out a pin and the ceremonial that goes with it. While some Lodges make it a priority to keep watch for the their Brother’s anniversary dates, other Lodges may note it, but fail to find the importance in it.

On occasion, a pin is mailed directly to the Brother’s home while very little effort from the Lodge to get in touch with him has been made. The extra effort needed to ensure our Brother receives this pin should be of the highest importance to the Lodge. Ensuring that the Brother is contacted and invited to the Lodge meeting, and if needed, provided transportation is very important.

Having the member stand at the altar in front of his Brothers while he is presented his pin will make the presentation a very special event. If this Brother happens to be one who hasn’t been attending Lodge on a regular basis, it might be what is needed to get him to come back on a regular basis. Make a big deal out of it! Invite the Brother’s friends and family to the Lodge for the event. Have a special dinner and make it about him. When presented with the pin, having a family member do the pinning adds a notable touch. Bring him to the East and give him the honors and encourage him to speak about his time as a Mason and what Masonry has meant to him. You stand a good chance of hearing some history of your Lodge.

I had the distinct honor of handing out a number of anniversary pins this year. In particular, I presented a 75-year pin to a special Brother who has been a guiding light in his local Lodges, whether helping in Degree work or always being there to support his Brothers when needed. He was asked to speak, and those present were given a history lesson that most will remember for a long time.

I was recently asked if I would consider traveling to Union City, Calif. to present a 70-year pin to an Oregon Brother who is living in the California Masonic Retirement Home. With the permission and assistance of the Grand Master of California, I presented it to him. He was given a chance to speak and we learned a lot of what made him grow over the last 70 years as a Mason.

I have presented many 50 and 65-year pins this year and look forward to presenting another 75-year pin at this year’s Grand Lodge Annual Communication. We will make it a special event. Don’t let your Lodge be one of those that miss out on these special opportunities. Pay attention and help honor the years served by your Brothers.

MEMBER PROFILE

D

ozens of Freemasons and family members gathered together in Jan. 2022 to recognize what is notably a rare achievement - a 75year Masonic membership. As of this writing, fewer than 25 current Oregon Freemasons have been members for this length of time and we caught up with one - Louie Sansing, a 33° Freemason, originally from Arkansas - as he reflected on 75 years of Masonic history.

OMN: You recently celebrated your 75-year membership – how was that?

Louie: I got my Master Mason Degree in June of 1947. As a matter of fact, you had to be 21 years old to join back then, now 18 in most countries. I put my petition in three weeks before my birthday, so when I was 21, I was ready to go in.

You may ask why I’m getting my 75-year memmem bership recognition now, ahead of June – there’s an understanding within the Lodge that you may get [recognized] starting in January, as long as your anniversary falls in the same year. That’s for the chance of – you know *chuckling* *chuckling*–– gotta get it in as soon as you can.

The Grand Master presented me with my apron, and I got a beautiful, special cane from [Vista MaMa sonic] Lodge. And the Grand Lodge provided the jewel and a plaque that goes with it. The Grand Master also presented me with a special plaque from Arkansas too, so that was nice.

OMN: Do you have any other Freemasons in your family?

Louie: My two granddaddies were Masons and one uncle. My Daddy joined during the war, but the Lodges kinda faded out during WWII and so I got in in 1947 and my father completed around the same time. Matter of fact, I helped him through some of his [Degrees].

My father’s father was quite a Mason and Eastern Star. He died in the 30s, but I’ve read a lot about him. My grandfather on my mother’s side, I went to Lodge with him a time or two – and with my uncle.

OMN: In addition to your extensive Masonic journey, it sounds like you’ve traveled a lot for work?

tric Cooperative [Assoc.] in Washington D.C., in the Over Seas Electrification Program. I worked in eight different countries for eighteen and a half years.

I had several posts around the world for work: long-term in Vietnam and also the Philippines, I was there for upwards of 6 years, but short-term in Tunisia, Alaska, Nicaragua, and India. These were 4 or 5 months, something like that. [My wife, Betty and my son, Bill] came with me when I went to India and the Philippines.

OMN: Having been a Freemason during the majority of your life and travels, did you ever checkin with Brothers as you traveled the globe?

Louie: Oh yes! I joined a Lodge in India. I got my Shrine [membership] in the Philippines. I went to a Lodge in the Philippines a couple of times but there was a curfew at night, so it was hard to make it. The Masonic Lodge wasn’t represented in some of these countries at the time so there weren’t any Masons there.

OMN: How has being a Freemason helped you grow personally?

Louie: I was timid when I was going to school because I guess I was smaller than some of them, and I felt a little timid. The teacher called on me and I’d have a rigor or something – you know!? But then when I joined the Masonic Lodge in ‘47’, I got out of that. And right now, if I see somebody in the Lodge that’s never been there before or I didn’t know him, I go and get him and have him sit with me. I built more confidence.

OMN: How do you think your life would be different if you hadn’t become a Freemason?

Louie: Well, I certainly wouldn’t have as many friends, and that matters.

OMN: What do you feel is the biggest challenge for Freemasonry?

Louie: I’ve helped people coming into Lodge who can’t remember anything hardly and with Lodges, you have to learn your lectures, memorize them, and stand for examination and I can recall a lot of Masons that could not remember their lines BUT they had “it” inside and made good Masons.

Come to think of it, I learned the ritual mouth to ear. They do that, you see, in Arkansas – or they did anyway. I had counted how many words were in each degree and would recite the ritual and that’s how I would know I had messed up, if I was off by one or two words. Here in Oregon, we have the cipher showing the first letter of every word – a much bigger hint!

OMN: Do you belong to any other Masonic groups?

Louie: I belong to the Scottish Rite, the Shrine, and the York Rite. My wife and I are charter members of Eastern Star in Portland, Ark. Past Worthy 4

Matron and Patron, in fact. I’m sure there’s more.

I was the Scottish Rite Man of the Year for two years in Arkansas, so I think I’ve made an impact with the number of Masons I’ve brought in and helped.

OMN: Do you have any words of wisdom for someone interested in joining Freemasonry?

Louie: What I would share with him - the minute I joined, it doesn’t make any difference who you are, what rank you have, whether you have a dollar in your pocket, it doesn’t make any difference.

That’s how Freemasonry makes you feel. It’s the inside and not the outside [that counts].

.W. GRAND MASTER, Gregory A. Jenkins, invites all Master Masons, their wives and guests to attend the 172nd Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge of A.F. & A.M. of Oregon, in Salem, Ore. Check-in for the event opens at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 1. The session itself, hosted entirely within the Salem Convention Center, begins with an informal opening at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 2, and follows the tentative agenda (at at right right).

This year, we are asking guests to register ahead of the event, including meal sign-ups, allowing for a swift check-in process. This way, everyone will have a single welcome packet awaiting pick-up when you arrive that will include event information, agenda, name badge, and any meal tickets purchased.

Please note: Oregon Grand Lodge Officers, District Deputies of the Grand Master, and visiting dignitaries will be sent registration information directly. As a courtesy, Oregon delegates will also be sent registration information via mail along with a proxy card, and should purchase meals online or by using the form at right.

LADIES’ EVENTS Thursday, June 2, the Grand Master’s Lady has arranged a river tour on the Willamette Queen Sternwheeler. Boarding will be at the Salem Riverfront Park and busses from the Convention Center will begin loading at 11:00 a.m., or you are welcome to walk 3 blocks to the park. Enjoy a riverboat experience as you relive Oregon’s historical past while enjoying a relaxing, leisurely voyage. Lunch on-board will be a taco bar buffet.

Additionally, the “Hangin’ With My Gnomies” themed Ladies Luncheon will be on Friday, June 3, at 12:30 p.m. at the Salem Convention Center (deli sandwich buffet). For those ladies not attending either of these ladies’ events, you are welcome to join the men during the Thursday and/or Friday Fellowship luncheons.

reat fellowship was enjoyed as representatives of the Portland Scottish Rite Temple Preservation Foundation paid a visit to W.B. Ben Overton and the brethren of Eugene Lodge No. 11 at their Stated Meeting in March.

The Lodge was presented with a framed selection of signed Historic Masonic Temple Association Bonds. Before the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, by the suggestion of W.B. Terin Mueller during his term, the Brothers of the Lodge generously voted to donate $25,000 to the Portland Scottish Rite Temple Building Preservation’s non-profit fund. Both Worshipful Masters met W.B. Richard Nowacki west of the ltar to receive the commemorative plaque.

The Portland Temple, constructed in 1902, was the second purpose-built Scottish Rite Temple in the United States, and is the oldest continuously operating one. The Portland Scottish Rite greatly appreciates the support of the members of Eugene Lodge No. 11 so that the building can be preserved for many generations to come.

W.B. Loren Newkirk was presented with his 70year Masonic Jewel. Present and contributing were his wife of 70 years, Marge, and their daughter Sharon. W.B. Loren is a Masons Mason, a 70-year member of Pearl Lodge, his only Lodge, and the Lodge where he was raised. Loren is also a Hiram award recipient, Past Master, Past Grand Patron of O.E.S., and is still a very active Lodge member.
