Happy Holidays I

always enjoy this time of the year. Clear and frosty mornings with snow covered mountains.

While travel may become a little more difficult at times, there is a lot of activity in our Lodges. Outgoing officers are having their last meeting of the Masonic year. Installations are being planned and taking place, and many Lodges will hold a St. John’s Day celebration or observance.

I congratulate all the newly elected Lodge officers, whether it is your first time serving or you have served many years. It is your duty as the Master of the Lodge to be prepared with planned activities throughout your year. I encourage having officer meetings and looking for ways to keep all your members engaged. Keep in mind that Grand View is a great resource of material that can help you have a fun and successful year in the East. This can include such items as supporting our youth organizations, partnering with your local schools to encourage reading, helping fund an afterschool program or activity, and scholarships. Invite guest speakers from your community. I know many Lodges already do several of these activities.

Consider adding an activity or change things with an existing function to spice things up.

Involve your newer members and rotate member responsibilities. This will help keep things exciting and fun.

This is also a time to enjoy being with family. I am looking forward to spending time with my granddaughters doing our favorite holiday activities such as looking for the perfect Christmas Tree and sledding.

I recently had the honor of traveling to Kennewick, Wash. to watch M.W.B. Craig A. Sipp present Brother Wayne J. Hein his 50-year Jewel. The joy on his face and the gratitude in his speech was overwhelming. M.W.B. Sipp was assisted by Brother Hein’s

son-in-law, W.B. Carl D. Thompson and his grandson, Brother Hunter R. Thompson who drove up from Central Oregon to participate in this momentous ceremony.

So, reach out and thank these seasoned Masons, in a way that only Masons can do. Without them serving the Craft the way they have, we would find a much harder path to pursue our own Masonic journey.

Strengthening

Bonds Between L odges & Communities

C

reating a Partnership continues to grow and expand, helping Lodges make lasting connections with their communities.

This year, 16 Lodges have submitted for scholarships and projects related to youth and helping their communities in a variety of ways. Some of the unique partnerships this year were food banks and backpack programs as Lodges partnered with local schools and nonprofits to get food to those who need it most.

Blue Mountain Lodge No. 34 contributed $10,000 towards a community splash pad that will surely be enjoyed by many people in their town. Construction is planned to begin

in the spring of 2024 in Baker City.

This year 15 students from around Oregon have benefitted from post high school scholarships to continue their education. Collectively, these students were awarded $33,000.

The Oregon Masonic Charitable Foundation plans to continue offering these funds to strengthen the bonds between the Lodges and the families living nearby. There is still more than $72,000 in the 2023-2024 budget that Lodges can apply for.

Creating a Partnership has many ways to connect Lodges and their communities. If you know a teacher or professional in the community that has a youth project or community

need, but there isn’t a Lodge near them, they can submit a form to be matched with a sponsoring Lodge nearby. Visit OregonFreemasonry.com/Community.

TRUSTEE REPORT

Recap from the Trustees T he members of the Trustee Board for the Grand Lodge of Oregon are the Most Worshipful Grand Master who is also the Chairman of the Board, the Deputy Grand Master, the Senior Grand Warden, the Junior Grand Warden, and the Immediate Past Grand Master. Also, in attendance but as non-voting members are the Grand Secretary and Grand Treasurer.

The Senior Grand Deacon attends the meetings as a guest. The Board meets once per month typically in person at the Grand Lodge Office in Forest Grove.

When joining the Grand Line, I was told by several past Grand Masters to get ready for a minimum of 72 trips to Forest Grove. I quickly found out they were not kidding, and I have learned to enjoy the Columbia Gorge scenery.

Aside from the administrative tasks the Board covers each month, a highlight for me includes Educational Assistance.

This is one of our most important programs as we assist school-age children by providing financial assistance for Masonic families who need our help. This is for children K-12, or post-high school through age 22 obtaining an education in public schools. So far during this school year, the Grand Lodge Trustees have awarded $43,000 to help 17 students. We have other applications that are currently going through the approval process. If you know of a family that needs assistance, please contact the Worshipful Master of your Lodge or call the Grand Lodge office. A lot of work goes into this program to make it successful, and the Board of Trustees appreciates the work of the Lodge Masters, District

Deputies, and the Grand Lodge staff.

The Lodge Repair and Improvement Grants program is now in its 5th year as we offer financial support to the local Lodges to help repair or restore their buildings. The current budget for the fiscal year is set at $150,000 and so far, we have helped 14 Lodges in the amount of $110,000. A Lodge may apply for assistance and is capped at $10,000 per year for a 100 percent reimbursement of the project cost. This has been a very popular program with our Lodges that are struggling financially. As we travel the state visiting the Lodges, it has been great to see the fruits of these grants.

As a Board, we spend time discussing the needs and issues of not only the Grand Lodge but also the local Lodges of our state. You are very important to each of us so please feel free to reach out to us or myself if you have any questions.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

A Veteran Honored

L o n g - t i m e M a s o n c h o s e n t o b e g r a n d m a r s h a l o f Ve t e r a n s D a y P a r a d e

ilton-Freewater resident W.B. Herald E. Reid, 102 years old, was honored as the grand marshal of the Veterans Day Parade on Saturday, Nov. 11.

Reid was born Sept. 29, 1921, in Emmett, Idaho. After high school, Reid attended Northern Idaho College of Education in Lewiston for two years and earned a degree in teaching elementary school and junior high. Instead of teaching, the young man decided to go to work for the government, and ended up as a tail gunner on a B-17 in World War II. In early 1944, his life took an unexpected turn when he joined the U.S. Army Air Force to help in the war effort. As it turned out, the military needed more gunners than pilots, so he ended up in Las Vegas for gunnery training. Reid flew 25 missions, as a tail gunner, over Germany. Planes caught a lot of flak from antiaircraft fire on the ground. Being a tail gunner was a dangerous position. “I was one of the fortunate ones,” he said.

Reid’s plane had been named Queenie. “She had so many patches

from the flak that she was the slowest in the fleet,” he explained. “But she was quite a plane.”

Returning to Idaho, he started teaching junior high. The veteran then went back to college, earned a bachelor’s degree and taught high school for eight years in Cottonwood, Idaho. Reid earned a master’s degree in administration from Washington State University.

In 1956, he took a position at McLoughlin Union High School in Milton-Freewater.

Around 1962, Mac-Hi Principal John Turbyne asked Reid to be vice principal of the high school; he accepted that position and also taught advanced chemistry.

In 1981, after 35 years in education, Reid retired. Reid was honored as Milton-Freewater’s Man of the Year in 1992 for his contribution to the community.

He was married in 1941, and proudly noted he and his wife, Effie, were married for more than 69 years.

The couple had two children, Tanna and Gavin.

Reid has been a Freemason for more than 69 years with life membeships at his Home Lodge Milton No. 96 and also Wildhorse Lodge No. 65.

Reid was excited to be able to represent his World War II comrades and other veterans in his hometown parade honoring those who have served.

PA C I F I C L O D G E ’ S INAUGURAL PIE COMPETITION

Pacific Lodge No. 50 held their inaugural Pie Baking Contest on October 10. The competition celebrated the art of pie-making and crowned a “Master” of the culinary craft.

A warm, heartfelt congratulations was extended to winners Brother Jeffery A. Potts & Mrs. Potts whose classic blueberry pie with a golden crust was hailed for its balance of sweet and tart flavor and flawless presentation.

The secret, they revealed, was teamwork and a sprinkle of love, which Mrs. Potts believed was the essential ingredient.

Congratulations were also offered to second place winner W.B. Anthony “Tony” D. Blosser, and third place winner R.W.B. Daniel De La Rosa.

The organizers of the pie-baking contest, buoyed by the first event’s success, are already planning for next year. With even more categories, participants, and delectable creations, it promises to be an even sweeter affair.

We look forward to another year of pie perfection and community spirit down the Masonic trail.

The Grand Lodge strongly recommends the attendance of each Lodge Secretary, but invites all Master Masons to attend. The presentations and information are pivotal to the Secretary role.

This year will focus heavily on many new features launched in Grand View and how these tools can help your Lodge.

Please register and submit any supply orders to the Grand Secretary’s office no later than one week before the event.

There is no fee to attend. Bring a current copy of the Oregon Masonic Code and the Secretary’s Handbook.
