GRAND MASTER’S MESSAGE

Time of Thanks A

s we travel along life’s road, it is always good to stop once in a while and appreciate where you have been and where you are. I am reminded on a regular basis of how thankful I am for how Masonry has enriched my life. It brought me closer to my grandfather, who was a Mason, and allowed me to spend time with him, and also my uncle, in Lodge. Through Freemasonry I built life time friendships and learned the joys of helping others.

I want to thank everyone who attended the Grand Master’s reception on September 30 in Union. A special shout out to my home Lodge, McEwen No. 125, and my other Lodges: Grande Ronde Valley No. 56, Blue Mountain No. 34, and Acacia No. 118. I will always cherish the wonderful time and memories made.

Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on all our blessings. It is also a good reminder for us to reach out to a Brother in need or to just call and check in. I encourage the Lodges to have a robust outreach program to check in with your fellow Brothers in Lodge. Take action! This can be a ride to Lodge or an errand around their home that they need help with. I guarantee this will be time well spent. By staying in contact with members of your Lodge, you will create greater opportunity to stay connected and provide help if the need arises.

Masonic Grand Lodge outreach programs are also a great resource. We provide a wide range of MasonicAid in the form of resource navigation and in-home services. You’ll have a chance to learn more about our programs during the Occasional Grand Lodge. I want to encourage everyone to attend for a day of Masonic Education and fellowship.

As we start into the holiday season, Sherri and I send our warmest greetings to you and yours this Thanksgiving holiday. May this Thanksgiving be shared with family and friends; spread the many blessings we have been taught in our Masonic journey.

rande Ronde Valley Lodge No. 56 located in Union celebrated its 150-year anniversary on Friday, September 29. The early evening event was attended by more than 80 people, including family and community members, of which 45 were Masons. Our local Grande Ronde Valley Chapter No. 49, Order of Eastern Star provided a wonderful assortment of finger foods and refreshments. The Brothers and Sisters 2 |

of the Lodge worked hard to plan and prepare and it paid off. Our Lodge building of over 100 years looked great for our anniversary dedication.

There was a great turnout of Grand Lodge officers who did a marvelous job with the Ritual and ceremony. It is an amazing sense of pride when your Lodge hall is fi lled to capacity with Masons on the sideline and you hear, all with one unison, the words “So Mote It Be”. It just makes your heart

and soul fi ll with pride. M.W.B. Craig A. Sipp and his Grand Lodge officers performed the Corn, Wine, and Oil ceremony with exceptional precision. A beautiful 150-year plaque was presented and dedicated to the Lodge.

W.B. Myron Miles, Grand Orator, presented a wonderful historical speech and testament to the true pioneers who settled this wild country on the Oregon Trail. It was these founding men with their families who started this Lodge

over 150 years ago. These were true pioneering and rugged people who were driven to create the town of Union.

They created and established businesses, orchards, and ranches, and in turn they laid the Masonic cornerstone within the town.

Two pioneering individuals who made an early impact on the success of this Lodge were Brothers William Wright, P.G.M. 1883 and Edward Kiddle, P.G.M. 1908. Both of these men came from the midwest on the Oregon Trail. They were significant supporters of the Fraternity and the Grande Ronde Valley Lodge. Both were influential businessmen renowned all over Oregon for their pioneering efforts of progress and building the future of Oregon.

M.W.B. Wright was Worshipful Master in Grande Ronde Valley in 1882, a banker by trade, and mayor of Union from 1891-1895. He founded the merchandise and milling operations in Union, and also throughout the Eastern Oregon and Western Idaho region.

M.W.B. Kiddle was Master of Grande Ronde Valley in 1891 & 1895 and a prominent manager within many large business circles in Union County. He was a huge promotor of all the Masonic bodies. He was the head of all the local York Rite bodies, a member of the Shrine, Scottish Rite, and Order of the Eastern Star. In 1909 he was elected Grand High Priest of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Oregon. In 1901 he was elected custodian of the work for Blue Lodge.

For 150 years the Grande Ronde Valley Lodge has benefitted from intelligent and impactful Masters and Brothers who have dedicated themselves to the success of this Lodge. As we look towards the next 150 years,our Lodge will continue that pioneering spirit and focus on creating a positive impact within our local Union community.

Corn, Wine, and Oil

In Freemasonry, corn or grain, wine, and oil symbolize prosperity, health, and peace. They are considered a Freemason’s wages and are featured in Masonic degrees. All three are used as symbols in building and Lodge consecration ceremonies.

Corn

TILLAMOOK 150TH ANNIVERSARY

Masonic Family Honors & Rededicates Tillamook Lodge Submitted by Bro. Kristopher A. Torrey, Senior Warden of Tillamook Lodge No. 57

J

oseph Dawson came to Tillamook in 1865 and held the first meeting of Freemasons residing in Tillamook County on July 1, 1867.

On September 18, 1873, Dispensation was granted and Tillamook Lodge No. 57 was officially chartered; the first official meeting was held on November 25, 1872.

Using the Lodge treasury, donations from Lodge members, and help from Silver Wave Chapter No. 18, they were able to purchase land and begin construction of the current Lodge building. For many years members were assessed $4 per year to make loan payments. The solid oak

furnishings, which are still in use today, were made possible from a joint effort with Silver Wave Chapter No. 18. This has been the Lodge meeting place, and for other bodies of the Masonic family, since January 1, 1914.

On Friday, September 15, Tillamook Lodge No. 57 held its 150th anniversary celebration. Members of the Grand Lodge, Tillamook Lodge No. 57, Silver Wave Chapter No. 18 of the Order of the Eastern Star, Al Kader Shriners, Oregon Grand Commandery of Knights Templar, Oregon State Senator Suzanne Weber and Tillamook County Commissioner, Erin Skaar, along with friends, family, and

TILLAMOOK 150TH ANNIVERSARY community members came together to honor and rededicate Tillamook Lodge No. 57 in a beautiful ceremony.

M.W.B. Craig A. Sipp, Grand Master of Oregon, officiated the ceremony with the aid of Deputy Grand Master, Tim Best; Senior Grand Warden, Marc Strong; and Junior Grand Warden, Richard Varner. The Working Tools of Freemasonry for a ceremony utilizing the symbols of Corn, Wine, and Oil, were presented by several Past Masters of Tillamook Lodge, Ted Johnson, Del Schultz, Jack Naval, and Mark Kennedy. After the ceremony, M.W.B. Sipp presented Ted Johnson, Worshipful Master of Tillamook Lodge No. 57, with a certificate of rededication. W.B. Myron Miles, Grand Orator, gave a wonderful presentation on the history of Tillamook County and the history of the Lodge.

Senator Weber and Commissioner Skaar both congratulated Tillamook Lodge on its 150 years of service to the community and wished 150 more years of service and prosperity.

On Saturday, September 16, the celebration continued with a Masonic open house honoring all aspects of Freemasonry in Tillamook County over the last 150 years.

This Lodge is a great band of Brothers with a rich 150-year history. In the two years since I transfered from California I’ve seen two different Grand Masters in our Lodge.

I’ve found a new Masonic home with Tillamook Lodge No. 57.

- Brother Mark L. Kennedy Displays were set up to showcase the history of the Tillamook County Lodges who pioneered our community but have since consolidated into Tillamook Lodge No. 57. Those Lodges were Bay City Lodge No. 102, Wheeler Lodge No. 167, and Cloverdale Lodge No. 126.

Since the time Brother Joseph came to Tillamook in 1865, Freemasonry

has been strong in Tillamook County. The names of community leaders who were Masons can be seen throughout the community—from street signs to building names and community records. Freemasonry and the Masonic family is alive and well in Tillamook County, and like our predecessors, we continue “Pioneering Masonry Forward.”

Tillamook Lodge No. 57 has been involved in the futures of our youth and young adults through annual scholarships at Tillamook Bay Community College, encouraging reading comprehension and skills through the Bikes-for-Books program in the county elementary schools, teaching and guiding community youth through DeMolay, and working to bring Job’s Daughters and Rainbow Girls to the area. The Tillamook County Shrine Club and Legion of Honor North Coast Platoon raises funds to provide 60 pounds of shredded cheese monthly to the Shriners Children’s Hospital in Portland.

Many members of Tillamook Lodge have served throughout the community and nation in many aspects: military service, law enforcement, public works, various service industries, public news sources and information, as well as local industry like logging, fishing, and much more. Tillamook Lodge members continue to serve their community and each other using their Working Tools on a daily basis.

MESH REPORT

A Century of Service

T

he Masonic and Eastern Star Home (MESH) Board has met monthly to oversee the operation of MasonicAid programs and the Jennings-McCall Center (JMC) in Forest Grove, Ore. With the beginning of a new Grand Lodge ear in June, new oard members were added and we immediately began working on our tasks.

Staff members from the Grand Secretary’s office joined me and Grand Secretary, M.W.B. James L. Morgan, P.G.M. in June as we attended the nnual onference of the Masonic Communities & Services Association. This conference provided valuable insight and training regarding the operation of Masonic retirement facilities.

There have been a variety of challenges at JMC as we exited the COVID-19 pandemic, which seem to have altered American views regarding work. Staffing at JMC has been an issue of concern, with vacancies and new hires of administrators, medical staff, and care providers. Occupancy at JMC suffered noticeably during the COVID-19 pandemic because residents could not visit with their friends and family in person. Occupancy has been slowly rising and is much improved but has not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels.

Additional challenges are new state requirements which have been implemented and increased insurance costs. These issues have required much of our attention.

The MESH Board has authorized significant remodeling, repairs, and restoration of the JMC building and grounds this 6 |

summer to maintain the facility’s condition and appearance.

This work includes interior remodeling in the west entry and lobby, roofing on both the Independent and Assisted Living wings, new security cameras, and planning for a new exterior landscape feature on the west side of the building.

Once permitting and development of a resident care plan was completed, work began in August.

Also in August, the MESH Board held their annual planning retreat in Baker City. Mr. Mark Remley and Ms. Crystale Harding from Aidan Health Services, the management company employed by MESH, were invited to attend a portion of the planning event this year. The planning session was well received and allowed the MESH Board to focus on long term issues. One of the more interesting topics was how to infuse the operations and atmosphere at JMC with Masonic values.

In closing, I would like to thank all who have donated funds, time, and resources to the success of the Masonic and Eastern Star Home. The Masons and Eastern Star members in Oregon have maintained a successful program assisting our members for 100 years, with the home having been established in 1922. We are well positioned to begin our next century of service.

A Good Year for Oregon Rainbow

regon Rainbow held their 96th Grand Assembly on October 13-15, at the Macleay Conference and Retreat Center in Salem, Ore. As we prepared for this year’s Grand Assembly, we looked back at the past year’s accomplishments.

Just before Oregon Grand Assembly 2022, a delegation of 13 traveled to Oklahoma for Supreme Assembly’s 100-year celebration.

Upon returning home, Oregon’s 95th Grand Assembly kept everyone busy in Cottage Grove, Ore. Our new Grand

Officers were installed, led by new Grand Worthy Advisor, Cady.

We started our year of service projects by spending a day helping the Marion Polk Food Share Youth Farm and Rainbow members continued their service focus by helping their schools, local Lodges, and other Masonic families. Many Purses of Empowerment were filled with donated toiletries and supplies and donated to local shelters and support groups as part of Supreme Assembly’s nationwide program. In all, more than 550

service hours have been logged by our Rainbow members this year.

Many events were held including three statewide initiations where 16 new members were initiated by our Grand Officers and local members.

We had another successful Camp SAS (Skills and Sisterhood) at the 4H camp in Salem where members enjoyed fun classes and a good time together.

Throughout the year, our Grand Officers spent time learning and practicing at four different retreats and practices to prepare for this Grand Assembly.

NEW MEMBERS

Travel continued as delegations attended California, Montana, and Washington/Idaho Grand Assemblies.

We also had a good group of members from around the state travel to the East West Shrine football game, where we got to walk in the parade with the Shriners groups.

Grand Assembly 2023 is now in the books, signifying another great year for Oregon Rainbow. We look forward

to another big year for our new Grand Officers and all of Oregon Rainbow.

Oregon Rainbow is the local jurisdiction of the International Order of Rainbow for Girls, founded by W. Mark Sexson in 1922 as an organization for young women whose fathers were members of the Masonic Lodge, and their friends.

Rainbow Lake in Charles Metsker Park, near McMinnville, was named in honor of Ann Metsker, Supreme Deputy for Oregon Rainbow from 1956-58. It holds a deed restriction that keeps it available for use by organized youth groups.

Most Worshipful Brother Lawrence Oliver Weaver who served this Grand Jurisdiction as Grand Master 2002 - 2003, passed to the Celestial Lodge Tuesday, August 8, 2023.

Most Worshipful Brother Weaver was born September 3, 1941 in Astoria, Ore., and passed at the age of 81 in Oregon City, Ore. Lawrence was a Life Member of Multnomah Lodge No. 1, Pendleton Lodge No. 52, Warren Lodge No. 10, and his home Lodge Washington Lodge No. 46 where he was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason on September 24, 1974. He was Worshipful Master of Washington Lodge No. 46 in 1977 and 1998, and was presented with a Hiram Award in 1998. Lawrence also held the offices of Secretary of Washington Lodge No. 46 from 2004-2014, Secretary of Palestine Masonic Lodge No. 141 in 2011, Senior Warden of Sunnyside Lodge No. 163 in 2019, and Junior Deacon of Washington Lodge No. 46 in 2022.

A service was held on Sunday, August 13, 2023 at 3 p.m. at the First Evangelical Presbyterian Church, located at 1321 Linn Ave., Oregon City, Ore. 97045.

Grand Master’s Reception

The Grand Master’s Reception was held on Saturday, September 30 in Union, Ore., where the Grand Master is a member at Grande Ronde Valley No. 56.

Lodge G rant s G et A New Name & Updates To better reflect the purpose of this program serving Lodges, the name has been updated to Lodge Repair & Improvement Grants.

New qualifying projects have been added: • Paving parking areas • Equipment used at the Lodge (ex: snow blower, lawn mower, etc.)

• One-time setup cost to establish Lodge internet services • Exterior projects increasing visibility (ex: flag poles, signage, etc.)

Since the program started in 2018, the Grand Lodge has matched almost $800,000 in assistance. Lodge Repair and Improvement Grants have assisted Lodges with HVAC, roofs, siding, bathrooms, plumbing and kitchen repairs, as well as many other projects.

Additionally, a new guideline to qualify requires the work performed at Lodges must be done by a licensed and insured contractor ensuring proper insurance coverage during repairs.
