Chews & Brews SPRING 2017

Words: Delaney Rea Photos Contributed By: Tomás Hidalgo It takes a certain kind of restaurant to fit into the distinct vibe of Eugene’s Whiteaker neighborhood. On a warm spring evening in Eugene, streets are alive with the buzz of an atmosphere unique unto itself. This small section of town pulses with a relaxed essence, lending it an appealingly warm notoriety that has helped it become one of Eugene’s premier dining neighborhoods. For a drink among friends to close out the day or menu options that are effortlessly a cut above, the Whiteaker provides. Even among the plethora of top-tier establishments that reside in this neighborhood, Izakaya Meiji Company easily ranks among the best. Alex Dakers, the general manager of Izakaya Meiji, calls the tavern a perfect place to unwind with friends after a day’s work. “There aren’t enough places to get good food after 10 p.m. in Eugene, so we are proud to offer that for our fellow industry folk, as well as students and other humans who happen to be hungry or thirsty after 10.” The menu laid out at Izakaya Meiji is best described as a bold combination: a fusion of Japanese-American pub food and a tavern stacked with near-endless drink options. Izakaya Meiji’s drink menu includes classic and original cocktails, over 100 varieties of whiskey and a rotating selection of beers. Along with their regular menu, Meiji also offers an enticing set of weekly specials, including all-nighter happy hours on Mondays and $1 off cocktails on Wednesdays. On Sunday nights, you can order a burger, a beer and a bourbon for just $14. It’s both an affordable deal and a superior meal, perfectly appealing to a student budget. Izakaya Meiji represents a unique change of pace for the Eugene

neighborhood. Since its inception in August 2010, Dakers says that the community has embraced the establishment. “We were lucky enough to open our doors the same day as the 4th annual Whiteaker Block Party,” Dakers said. “This community has been a big part of our success from day one.” The atmosphere inside Meiji is rustic and homegrown, as they do most of their own construction and maintenance in-house. Their aesthetic is also heavily influenced by their love of classic country and Western music, adding another palpable twist to their tavern environment. With a menu like Meiji’s, that includes an array of Japaneseinspired dishes, it can be a daunting task to choose the perfect pairing of food and spirit. Dakers helps with this dilemma by offering some of his personal favorite combinations: “I love having our fried octopus paired with sake, especially any of our nama [unpasteurized] sakes. Off our late-night menu, I love ordering our ramen and gyoza along side our house standard Bourbon & Ginger, or some shochu [a light Japanese distilled spirit].” The Bourbon & Ginger in particular is one of the most popular cocktails in Eugene, a standard of Izakaya Meiji’s drink menu. Dakers also stresses that the establishment is best enjoyed in the company of others. “The best way to have a great time at Meiji is to come in with a friend or two and order several of our small plates to share while you talk and drink!” Izakaya Meiji Co. is open every night from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m., with bar service beginning at 11 p.m. Located at 345 Van Buren St. in Eugene, Izakaya Meiji can be reached by phone at 541-505-8804 and on the web at IzakayaMeiji.com. Chews & Brews SPRING 2017

Agrarian Ales Farm to Fermentation

Agrarian Ales is 25 sprawling acres of

farmland just a comfortable distance from the hustle and bustle of downtown Eugene. With a tasting room and brewery constructed in the remains of a retired woodshop, it’s hard not to feel as if you’re in a cozy, rustic paradise. Agrarian boasts an impressive outdoor eating and leisure space that is suitable for guests of all ages, including the family dog. The brewery-farm kitchen hybrid has been operating for four years and is steadily growing in popularity, especially during the beautiful Willamette Valley summers. Focused on achieving synchronization with the seasons, Agrarian Ales makes a significant effort to grow organic food and cultivate new crops of hops each year. Agrarian crafts their tap list and kitchen menu around seasonal crop availability. Nate Tilley, farm and brewery manager at Agrarian, notes the importance of seasonality in the creation of unprecedented brews: “We’ve gone in the direction of attempting to work with the seasons and what comes on throughout the year for us to incorporate into different beers. That lends itself to a huge amount of flexibility on our part to be able to adjust the beers and what we have, and it’s always changing. We’re catering to the beer drinker that’s always looking for something new and exciting, rather than just the standby they’re used to.” With this being said, you can expect top-of-the-line creative beers every time you visit Agrarian. During the summer season, the Agrarian Ales farm is in full bloom, filled with expansive rows of hops, fruit, herbs and vegetables. Other than taking on the responsibility of being a renowned brewery, Agrarian is also home to an impressive farm kitchen, which is most notable for its wood-fired pizza, topped with tomato sauce sourced directly from the garden. The kitchen menu changes as fruits and vegetables on the farm cycle in and out of season, similarly to the tap list. Agrarian Ales is also in communion with other local farms such as Lonesome Whistle and Crossroads Farm, to receive speciality grains and chili peppers.

With a large focus on seasonality, a flavorful taplist is guaranteed with every visit to Agrarian. One of Tilley’s current favorites, Clairvoyance, is a kettle-sourced wheat beer infused with clary sage flowers grown on the farm. Another top-notch brew, ¡Pablamo!, has an amber ale base and is made with fireroasted poblano peppers. Tilley added that Agrarian likes to place an emphasis on chili peppers, hops and malts in the beer produced - variety is of high importance. A maltier brew, Tartan, is a Scotch ale with bold flavor. If you’re looking for something hoppy, Chronic D’Aphotic hopped black ale will be your go-to. Tilley added that Chronic D’Aphotic, “showcases some of the more robust hops we [Agrarian] have, like chinook and magnum.” Whether you’re a seasoned beer connoisseur or a newbie ready to dive head first into the land of craft brews, Agrarian Ales has something for every stage of your beer journey. If your family is visiting Eugene for the weekend or if you have a family of your own in the area, the farm is a perfect place to relax and enjoy each other’s company. Tilley notes, “We are a really big attraction for families and people with dogs because we have so much elbow room out here. People can come out and play frisbee and have a beer. It’s an attraction that you don’t really find in the urban environment.” Agrarian also occasionally hosts live events such as concerts, and also has an expansive collection of games including life-size Jenga and a chess board to pass the time while you’re enjoying a brew and a wood-fired pizza. Look for the Agrarian beer truck on your next trip to the Saturday Market, or visit the tasting room and kitchen located at 31115 Crossroad Lane W in Eugene. Agrarian Ales is open on Friday from 3-8 pm, and on Saturday and Sunday from 12-8 pm. Words: Nicole Scopelliti Photo: Trevor Meyer SPRING 2017 Chews & Brews

Alumni Spotlight

Jamie Floyd of Ninkasi Brewing

|

Chews & Brews SPRING 2017

Nestled in the heart of Eugene’s Whiteaker neighborhood is Ninkasi Brewing Company,

equipped with an inviting tasting room and outdoor seating area. Jamie Floyd, a founder of the company and a University of Oregon alumni, has been redefining the craft beer world since 2006 and has since made Ninkasi a household name. The journey from homebrewing at a local University of Oregon co-op to opening a successful, communityfocused brewery has been an extensive process, but his passion for brewing is far from being extinguished any time soon.

“Beer really helps you to have fun. Our relationship with beer is very casual and very personal to us. There are a lot of social mechanisms that beer provides. Technically what we make is beer, but the huge thing that we make is culture. That’s not a money return, it’s a societal return that I think is very old and something that we’re really focused on.” Co-op Concoctions & Humble Beginnings

The Art of the Brew

After moving to Eugene from Cupertino, California to attend the University of Oregon in 1990, Floyd began a long but rewarding journey. He would eventually decide to major in sociology, which contributed to the same love of community and people that Ninkasi is built on today. The vast availability of innovative brews in Eugene piqued Floyd’s interest. He noted that the lively new beer scene he discovered, after spending most of his young adult years surrounded by spiritless brews, was one of the principal things that changed him early on. His newfound life in Oregon gave him access to European beers and beers from across the world. This made him excited about making different kinds of beers.

Floyd still resides in the Whiteaker neighborhood today, just a small distance from the Ninkasi tasting room. “We see ourselves as part of the community, and all the interactions we’ve had in the community is because we’re a part of it,” Floyd said. When asked about The Whiteaker’s influence on the Ninkasi brand, Floyd highlighted the artistic, creative vibe of the neighborhood. “We’re artistic. We have art studios in the middle of our campus, and we have our own art department. We’re deeply connected within that community, and it’s just a part of who we are.” Ninkasi’s artwork and branding is visionary in its creativity to say the least. Another highly sought after Ninkasi brew, a red IPA appropriately named Dawn of the Red, features the I-5 bridge over the Willamette, a subtle homage to the brewery’s hometown. The brew’s corresponding marketing materials even feature zombified Ninkasi employees. It’s clear the company not only has major respect for creativity and the artistic process, but for the people that work there too.

While living at one of UO’s local student cooperatives, the Campbell Club, a 17-year-old Floyd tried his hand at home brewing inside the kitchen of the Lorax, a neighboring coop. Although it’s unclear whether or not this first batch was as delicious as Ninkasi’s current cult favorite, Total Domination, it’s clear that Floyd found creativity and passion for the craft at a young age. Ninkasi’s current and rotating seasonal collection of brews reflects this same sense of blossoming creativity, as each beer is crafted with intention and a unique, artistic flair. After an eventful undergraduate career, Floyd continued to develop his craft as a brewer at Steelhead Brewery in Eugene. After an 11-year career at Steelhead, Floyd’s dreams of owning his own brewery culminated, and he and friend Nikos Ridge opened Ninkasi Brewing Company in Eugene. Floyd emphasized his intention of opening a brewery in Eugene from the very beginning: “I really did want to live here and make a brewery here. I lived in this neighborhood off and on for a long time, and it all just came together.” He also noted that Eugene was an ideal location, given the water source and the size of the surrounding community.

Become a part the Ninkasi Brewing community by stopping by the Ninkasi tent at KLCC Brewfest, or by grabbing a brew at the tasting room, located at 272 Van Buren St. The tasting room is open from 12-9 pm Monday through Wednesday, 12-10 pm Thursday through Saturday and 12-6 pm on Sunday. Exclusive tours of the brewery are also available every day of the week; times vary, so be sure to check out www.NinkasiBrewing.com for exact times. Whether you visit Ninkasi at brewfest, the tasting room or both, you’re guaranteed good conversation with good people and an inclusive, welcoming atmosphere.

I

n a world of endless food and beverage pairings, the classic burger and brew combination stakes its claim as one of the most accessible, affordable and harmonious options. Luckily, Eugene is a burger-and-brew hub, boasting top-notch breweries, gastropubs and restaurants. It’s nearly impossible to run out of pairings, and as summer nears, it’s the perfect time to indulge in a juicy burger and an ice-cold beer on one of Eugene’s many outdoor patios. To create a customizable dining experience that fits your foodie style, try one of the pairings featured below. With brew options that complement, amplify and balance bold flavors, no pubgrub fan will be left disappointed. Words: Nicole Scopelliti Photos: Trevor Meyer & Lauren Bruce

Burgers + Brews A Guide to Pairing

Elk Horn Transport yourself into a cozy, lodge-like haven with a modern twist at Elk Horn Brewery. Antler lighting fixtures and taxidermy are juxtaposed with modern metal paneling, creating a unique space for both dining and leisure. Indulge in southern-inspired barbecue dishes, hearty burgers and a wide variety of beers on Elk Horn’s trendy outdoor patio; it’s the perfect space to grab some dinner and relax with friends. If you’re an Elk Horn first-timer, I recommend trying the Western-Up Burger, which is blanketed in pepper jack cheese, jalapenos and fried onion straws. If you’d like to complement the bold, spicy flavors of this burger, order a fan favorite IPA: Elk Horn’s The Flying Hawaiian. For a burger that’s ultra rich in flavor, try the Dirty Burg, topped with beer cheese sauce, white cheddar cheese curds, tater tots and bacon crumbles. Because it would be a shame to muddle such bold flavors, it’s important to find a beer that can stand up to the Dirty Burg. Consider pairing this burger with The Perfect 10, Elk Horn’s Imperial IPA. Elk Horn Brewery is located at 686 E. Broadway and is open Monday through Thursday from 11am-10pm, 11am-11pm on Friday and Saturday and 11am-9 pm on Sunday.

Steelhead Brewing Company It’s no surprise that Steelhead Brewing Company is a popular establishment among seasoned foodies and beer lovers alike. With rustic, industrial-chic decor and a welcoming atmosphere, Steelhead is not only a popular dining spot for locals, but for students and their families as well. Although Steelhead has an impressive menu with a variety of fares, its burgers and brews are often considered to be its claim to fame. Steelhead’s Mushroom Swiss Burger, topped with sauteed mushrooms, swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion and Mckenzie burger sauce, pairs nicely with Steelhead’s Raging Rhino Red Ale. Raging Rhino’s toasted malts and hints of caramel complement this burger’s rich flavors without stealing the show. Steelhead also offers a selection of seasonal brews, and when offered, Steelhead’s St. Bernard Brown serves as a great sidekick to the Mushroom Swiss Burger as well. Visit Steelhead Brewing Company at 199 E. 5th Ave. Steelhead is open from 11:30 am-10 pm Monday through Thursday, 11:30 am-11pm on Friday, 10am-11 pm on Saturday and 10am-10 pm on Sunday.

Falling Sky Brewpub If you’re in search of a trendsetting, communal atmosphere with an ample beer selection, stop by Falling Sky Brewing House and Gastropub. This brewpub offers something that is difficult to find: food that is just as good as its brews. With such an expansive menu and tap list, it’s hard not to find a burger and beer pairing that you’ll love. Try the Lamb Burger topped with swiss cheese, caramelized onion, mayo and greens. Falling Sky’s Retrograde Red is a perfect complement to the burger’s swiss cheese and bold flavors. Contrastingly, if you would like to cut through the burger’s richness and cleanse your palate in between bites, consider pairing the Lamb Burger with Falling Sky’s Polar Melt Pale Ale. Herbivores, fear not! Falling Sky has a delectable Field Burger on their menu with equally delicious beer pairings to match. Made with a barley-veggie patty, greens, white bean spread, fried chickpeas and pickled onion, the Field Burger packs a fresh punch. Consider pairing the Field Burger with a classic that is sure to take a stand against the burger’s pickled onions: Falling Sky’s Don’t Panic American IPA. Wolkig Hefeweissen, Falling Sky’s hefeweizen, is a mellow, smooth and refreshing complement to the burger as well, and will not overpower the Field Burger’s delicate flavors. Falling Sky Brewing House and Gastropub is located at 1334 Oak Alley and is open from 11 am-11 pm Monday through Thursday, 11 am12 am on Friday, 10 am-12 am on Saturday and 10 am-11pm on Sunday. Delivery and takeout options are also available everyday from 11 am-10 pm.

Cornucopia Cornucopia is, without a doubt, known for its burgers. On Monday nights, you can expect to find Cornucopia’s Burger and Brew special, which consists of a burger, a brew and some fries for $13.99. With over 10 award-winning burgers on the menu, it’s difficult to leave Cornucopia feeling dissatisfied. Alongside Cornucopia’s impressive menu of burgers is an expansive tap list with a variety of beers from local breweries. Although I recommend tasting all of Cornucopia’s burgers, I suggest trying the Swiss Patty Melt paired with Oakshire’s Watershed IPA. Sandwiched between two slices of toasted marble rye bread and topped with Thousand Island dressing and sauteed onions, this patty melt is savory to say the least. Pairing this patty melt with Oakshire’s Watershed IPA will ensure a balanced palate for the entire course of the meal. Sometimes simplicity is key; however, simple doesn’t necessarily mean boring. Cornucopia challenges the stereotype of the traditional hamburger with its All-American Burger. Order it to your liking and choose from toppings such as lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, mayo, mustard and ketchup. Pair this simple yet flavorful burger with Ninkasi’s mellow pale ale, Pacific Rain. Visit Cornucopia at 207 E. 5th Ave. from 8 am-1 am, seven days a week.

McMenamins East 19th Street Cafe Find yourself in a cozy, bohemian space at McMenamins East 19th Street Cafe. Whether you choose to dine inside and shoot pool or venture to the intimate outdoor patio, you’re guaranteed a positive experience and delectable fare. Although McMenamins offers a variety of meal options, its burgers are top-of-the-line and its selection of beer is no different. Consider trying Wilbur’s Jumbo Deluxe, topped with bacon, Tillamook cheddar and a fried egg. McMenamins’s Hammerhead Ale complements this bold burger nicely; with its prominent hopped flavor, Hammerhead will not outshine this burger, but rather will harmonize with it. Another bold favorite, the Captain Neon burger, is topped with blue cheese dressing and bacon. To complement the tanginess of this burger without dulling its shine, I suggest pairing it with the vibrant and intensely hoppy Diamond IPA. Visit this McMenamins location at 1485 E. 19th Ave. from 11 pm-1 am Monday through Saturday and 11 am-12 am on Sunday. 12

Take it Outside

Eugene’s Best Outdoor Seating After

a long, harsh winter filled with snowstorms and heavy rainfall, the months of taking shelter inside restaurants and coffee shops to avoid the freezing cold are now behind us. April is here to stay, and that means it’s finally time – lunch date season is upon us! Donn your fanciest sun dresses, the widest-brim hat you own and take to the scenic (almost) outdoors to really enhance your dining experience. Keep reading for some of Eugene’s finest restaurants that offer beautiful outdoor patio seating for the upcoming sunny weekends. Words: Skyla Patton Photos: Sierra Pedro & Benji Rothenberg

Sweet Cheeks Winery For a true vintage lunch, settle down outside with a glass of pinot noir or rose and kick your feet back while you enjoy the beautiful greenery of Eugene at Sweet Cheeks Winery. Located in the higher streets tucked away out of the city, the winery’s spacious outdoor patio features a gorgeous panoramic view of the rolling foothills flourishing with colors and life. Relax in the comfort of the warm spring air and enjoy a delicious glass of house made wine, crafted moments away from your very seat and delivered by a family dedicated to the city of Eugene and the art of winemaking. If you’re lucky, you might even be visited by a vibrant rainbow that sometimes appears on a perfect day, and spans the entire field of grapes beyond the patio! Sweet Cheeks Winery and Vineyard is open Saturday through Thursday 12pm to 6pm, and Friday 12pm to 9pm.

Mcmenamins - By the River If you’re looking for somewhere picturesque to share a cold brew with your friends, there are few better places to go than McMenamins North Bank location by the river. Its outdoor deck offers one of the best views of the Willamette you could ask for, running parallel to the river and the bike path so you get the full 180 view of all the action while you enjoy your meal. Their menu boasts items from local farms and producers here in Oregon, and is praised widely for their fresh fish dishes and large selection of brews on tap. Cozy up for lunch during the day and scope out the nature scene, or head over in the evening and eat dinner while listening to the river roll, lit by huge outdoor torches to keep you warm! Open Sunday through Thursday from 11am to 11pm, and Friday/Saturday 11am to midnight. 14

Agate Alley If you’re hoping for an environment a little cozier, Agate Alley is the outdoor dining experience you’re looking for. The restaurant focuses on encompassing the Eugene essence of warmth and comfortability, offering a classic northwestern menu with twists of Latin and Asian cuisine on top of it all. Their small but relaxed outdoor patio is great for a dinner (or double) date night with your partner, or to stop by and show off Eugene’s nightlife to your parents while they’re visiting! Wooden-spool themed tables and relaxed garden chairs will remind you of barbecues back home while small fires crackle a few feet away to keep you warm even in the brisk evenings, so the party can continue into the hours of the night. Snack on a grilled avocado or enjoy sipping on one of their many classic cocktails, all the while breathing in the crisp fresh air! Open Monday through Friday 11am to 1am, Saturday 9am to 1am, and Sunday 9am to midnight.

5th Street Market - Provisions Market Hall There are few experiences more authentic and elegant than a Sunday brunch with your friends at Fifth Street Public Market. There is a multitude of restaurants available along with fun vendors and shops to browse around, but located on the ground floor, Provisions Market Hall offers a wide range of dining choices, Oregon souvenirs, and a small grocery store packed to the brim with local Pacific Northwestern products! The rustic environment will make you feel right at home while you’re perusing your options; snack on a rainbow of hand-crafted macarons, bite into a massive sandwich made from local farms, or fill up a bowl with freshly tossed veggies from the salad bar. Once you’ve made your choice, settle down next to a rushing brick fountain in the outdoor courtyard featured in the direct center of the market! The cozy plaza is filled with the hustle and bustle of spring Eugene life, and the throes of blooming plants and immaculate, open-faced architecture will give you the feeling of entering another world while you enjoy your meal. Provisions Market Hall is open Monday through Sunday, from 7am to 8pm.
