TAKE A SIP

Cold drinks and sunshine for the rest of summer please. Drink bars that serve smoothies, juices and milk tea are here in Eugene waiting to rescue you from the cruel temps. The restaurants listed offer more than just a drink so check them out if you need a reason to cool down.

LovaKava

D.I.Y Tea Bar Instagram: @diyeugenetea A cute tea bar on 13th street that makes bubble milk tea, smoothies and slushies. Matcha red bean, lychee, taro and honeydew are some of the flavors at the Taiwan-imported tea leaf shop offers. What really makes D.i.y unique is their do-it-yourself toppings of fruit jellies, aloe vera and boba tapioca.

Boba Head

Instagram: @bobaheadtea Focusing on seasonal ingredients, Boba Head serves a variety of milk tea styles. Smoothies, milk tea with ice cream, or milk tea slushies, they all come with boba and a cute cup to instagram a picture with. Multiple flavors and choices of tea lets Boba Head offer unique bubble teas. I want to try their rose milk tea with cream and strawberry boba.

Instagram: @lovakava Kava tea is known for having a euphoric and calming effect after drinking. The Pacific Island crop can be used as an herbal medicine to help relax the body and ease anxiety. LovaKava offers the tea on a wooden tasting tray or in a smoothie. Drinking Kava isn’t psychedelic but the tea bar on Broadway does have a trippy vibe. With kombucha on tap, smoothies, vegan food and CBD tinctures on the menu LovaKava fits in with Eugene’s hippy feel.

Nourish Instagram: @nwnourish A juice bar that wants to give their customers more than just a drink. Nourish uses organic fruit for their cold-press juices, smoothies and smoothie bowls. Their downtown location offers cold drinks in house or to go. If the juicing trend has been on your mind, the bar offers subscriptions of their juices for cleansing. One of their “Roots” drinks, Love your Liver, is made up of beets, carrots, apples, ginger and aloe - get your green drink and go.

Big Kahuna Bowls Instagram: @bkbowls This is the place to go for breakfast or brunch on a day out. Big Kahuna Bowl on Willamette dedicates their restaurant to smoothie bowls. One of their signature bowls, The Dragon Bowl, is a Pitaya based smoothie with banana, strawberry, pineapple and apple juice topped with granola, goji, flax seed, honey, strawberries, mangoes, pineapples and bananas.

Fresh and Natural Mexican Eatery and Smoothies freshandnaturalmexeugene.com Bringing in recipes from Acapulco, Mexico to West 11th street, this small restaurant has 31 smoothie and juice flavors to choose from. Because of them there are diablitos and mangonadas in Eugene - a cold fruit drink mixed with Tajin, chamony and hot sauce.

Keeping Your House Cool Written by Lauren Bruce

Real Cool

For two or three months, the rainy city of Eugene transforms into a sun-soaked, tan line and six pack paradise that lures freshman into accepting their UO offers during the summer season tours. But while you’re basking in the vitamin D, your home temperatures are skyrocketing and everything is melting. Here are some cheap tips to keeping your home cool while you’re out at the lake or chilling indoors.

AIRFLOW

Keep your bedroom and bathroom doors open, as well as windows when it’s cool enough outside. Do this in the mornings and evenings when temps drop, and close the windows when it’s sunniest. For the most part, keep your blinds closed and your fans on.

SHUT OFF THE LAPTOP

Turn off as many major electronics as you can manage, like your TV, laptop, big lamps, etc. If you have work to get done, consider taking it to the library or a coffee shop so you’ll be in the AC anyway, but keep it out of your house. Large lights and electronics create heat and no one wants to write research papers in a sticky, warm room.

FEELING BLUE

Save your dark decor, sheets and blankets for the winter months and add a pop of color to your home with lighter shades like blues, tans and greens. You can even throw a sheet over your couch or living room chairs to cool down hotter, softer fabrics and reduce the dreaded skin stick. Tuck in the sheet around the couch or chair and add your throw pillows back on top. Lighter colors will not only brighten the room, but absorb less light and help to keep your home cooler.

POPSICLES TRY AC

There are great tutorials online for creating AC cooling in your home, and most of them won’t break your budget. Before you go crazy with the DIYs, try hanging a small towel soaked in cold water over a fan. This way your fan is distributing cool air.

If you’re trying to keep your house cooler, you should avoid using the stove. Chilled meals will be your friend. Want a cheap, summer activity? Try making some popsicles with a friend or roommate.

What you need: cups, sticks, juice and tape.

Instructions:

FEELING PINNED UP?

Nothing’s worse than being stuck indoors when the sun is shining bright outside. If your walls are feeling bare or could use a change, try switching out any photos or wall decor for summer shots of your outdoor adventures. One or two of your favorite photos will really draw attention, and reduce any clutter. Spend some time picking out one of your favorite photos you’ve taken, or search online for prints from your favorite artists.

1) Grab your favorite fruit juice(s), a bag of small popsicle sticks, and small paper cups (frozen fruit optional) 2) Pour juice into the cups until they’re about 2/3 full of juice. Add frozen fruit if desired 3) Tape a popsicle stick to the cup so that it’s standing in the middle of the cup and doesn’t flop over. 4) Freeze overnight and use scissors to remove cup. 5) Enjoy!

Want a real summer treat? Try replacing the juice mixture with limeade, tonic water and gin and freeze overnight to share with friends.

Scrapbooking for beginners

I have to start with a confession: I am a sentimental hoarder. Whether it’s ticket stubs from a movie or a shiny rock from the beach, I have always had a seriously hard time letting go of things I attached sentimental value to. If you’re anything like me, your drawers and closets are probably stuffed full of brimming shoeboxes with cards, tickets and other random memorabilia; it’s great to have tangible items for memory, but after a while, the clutter became overwhelming and less than zen. After being inspired by a friend who is particularly talented at decorative journaling, I decided to get my feet wet in an age-old hobby that I thought could help my hoarder ways become useful: scrapbooking. If you’re a sentimental hoarder looking for an outlet like me, check out these tips on getting started in the world of scrapbooking.

Words by Skyla Patton

Choose your scrapbook wisely! There are lots of online options for different sizes, shapes and styles of skeleton journals, or you can opt for a thrifted version at Goodwill or St. Vincent in their literature sections. Most importantly, if you plan on including photographs or paper clippings, make sure your scrapbook is acid and PVC free or that you have an archival spray to protect your documents and keep them from yellowing or losing vibrance.

Plan you stick. stick Plan before before you When you’re getting ready to start assembling your scrapbook, it’s a good idea to have an idea of what each page will look like before you get started. I recommend laying out your memorabilia on a table beforehand and organizing it in whatever way you see fit. It will get messy quickly if you try to move things around, and any crafter knows that “changing your mind” after the fact can be more problematic than you think. Laying out a sort of map of your items can help to keep things straightforward and avoid making your book look cluttered (unless you like that aesthetic). An easy pattern to follow is either chronological or itemized: have each page be another day or adventure you experienced, or have each page be different items (ex: one section for ticket stubs, another for photos, etc.).

Decorate to your heart's content. A huge part of scrapbooking is customizing it in whatever way you see fit! Scrapbooks are quite literally a blank page just waiting for you to jazz that ish up. When I first started, I picked out a new set of fine-tip calligraphy markers (for labeling photos, doodling, and titles) in a wide range of colors and a pack of adhesive photo corners so my film would look as if it’s mounted. Another fun addition is stickers or washi tape; stickers can be souvenirs on their own but really help to spice up a page or add personal touch, while washi tape has swept pop culture with it’s adorable patterns and wide range of uses. Stop by your local craft stores to pick up extra adhesive, craft supplies and scrapbook-specific decor.

tip A planner can be used as the perfect diary + scrapbook combo and a great way to organize the year.

How to Make the Most of

SMALL LIVING SPACES Words by Sophie Bange

As summer begins to wind down, many ducks are flocking back to Eugene - and back to smaller living spaces. After spending the break back at home with storage space abound, it can be difficult to adjust to cramped rooms and tiny kitchens. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to maximize space and stay organized. Whether you live in a dorm, studio or shared space with roommates, here are just a few ways to make the most of your living space.

Build Your Own Storage

It’s important to have storage that’s adaptable to the amount of space you have. That’s where grid wire shelving and storage cubes come in handy, because they interlock so that you can assemble them to fit your space. I use mine instead of a dresser; each cube perfectly fits my jeans, sweatshirts, and t-shirts separately. They’re a simple, reasonably-priced way to keep organized. (Pro tip: Build up, not out. This way you can maximize vertical space without taking up a lot of floor space.)

Hide Things Under the Bed

If you’ve got any amount of space under your bed, be sure to use it. Long, thin containers that fit under the bed make great storage for things you don’t use all the time, like seasonal clothing and shoes.

Desk Organizers

As students, we get bogged down with notebooks and syllabi quickly. Go through your stash at the end of every term and recycle what you definitely don’t need. If you need to keep some of your notes around for next term, keep it organized in stacked desk trays. If everything has a place, you won’t have random papers taking up space and causing clutter, which will make your space look smaller.

Choose Furniture Wisely

If you’re buying furniture, consider light colors. It actually creates the illusion that your space is bigger and brighter. Another way to optimize space is to go for storable seating, such as chairs that can be tucked away under tables and desks.

Decorate With Mirrors

Have you ever glanced at a mirror and thought, for just a second, “Wow, this room is huge!” When it comes to decorating, go for a mirror (or two). Reflective surfaces trick the eye into thinking that a room is even bigger than it is.

Driver, Roll Up the Partition, Please

Partitions are a great way to make two rooms out of one. Need a little separation between a dining area and lounge space? Throw up a divider (you can sometimes find them for cheap at thrift stores) or curtain! Partitions are especially helpful in studio apartments. Separating your bed from your kitchen will create the illusion of more space!

Optimize Kitchen Space

If there’s one part of student living spaces that always seems to get cluttered, it’s the kitchen. Luckily there are a few small things you can invest in to make the most of kitchen space. Pan dividers and risers fit neatly into cabinets so you can stack pans, plates and bowls, optimizing vertical space while keeping organized. If you’re low on counter space, consider an over-the-sink cutting board (you can get one for $30 on Amazon). Rolling carts are also a great, portable way to store kitchen needs, and you can get them for just about any budget.

Be Open to Change

Finally, keep in mind that nothing in your space needs to be permanent. You’ll inevitably need to rearrange your space as you get used to living in it and find the best place for all your things. Especially if you’re sharing space with roommates, you’ll need to be flexible to their needs, too!

Saving this School Year Back-to-school shopping is a reminder that summer is coming to an end. It’s time to focus on the upcoming chapter by preparing for it. Fall can be a spendy term due to paying fees, settling back onto campus and buying supplies for classes. It’s possible to be frugal with back-to-school, and this list tells of a few ways to start saving money while shopping. Words by Kimberly Harris | Photos by Xifan Cai

BAR CART

Written by Skyla Patton | Photos by Lauren Bruce

The hot summer days may be coming to a close, but that doesn’t mean the backyard parties and get togethers have to slow down too. Nothing will catch party-goer attention like a sweet (open?) bar, and you don’t have to go to a posh restaurant for the bar experience anymore either. Check out these instructions on how to put together a DIY bar cart in any living room or backyard space to add a little extra pizazz to your next get together.

1. CHOOSE YOUR CART The most crucial step is making the selection of the skeleton of your bar cart. This will be the main structure that you simply add on to as you go. There are dozens of tutorials online on how to craft a cart yourself if you enjoy wood or metal work (or just more extreme craft projects in general) but it’s also an option to thrift one. Check out popular second hand stores in your area or cheaper outlets such as Ross and Marshalls for a cute end table or cart with wheels. Keep in mind your location option while making this choice; wheels might be awesome in the kitchen, but less helpful on gravel in a backyard.

2. MAKING IT YOURS Here comes the fun part: decoration! Depending on the material your cart is made out of, painting it a bright color or with fun designs is a fast way to make this bar cart your own and customize it for your ideal party environment. Make sure the materials you are using are sturdy and the paint is wear and weather resistant -- we all spill our drinks once in a while and you want your masterpiece to have longevity. Allow a full 24hrs of setting time for any and all decoration changes.

3. ACCESSORIES To truly customize this bar cart for your hostess-with-the-mostess dreams, adding fun (and useful) accents is a great way to bring it’s potential to the fullest. Utilize rubber placemats on all flat surfaces to aid with grip and avoid slipping or spilling. Glue pencil holders or your choice of storage wear to the sides or top surfaces for holding straws, utensils or neccessary bar components like limes and lemons.

4. STOCK UP And just like that, you have your very own personal bar cart at home! Stock your cart with drinks or accents of your choosing. To have a well-rounded cart, it’s a good idea to have staple mixers or ingredients that can go in all sorts of beverages, along with classic accessories like a mixer and rim salt. Be prepared to wow all of your guests with your bartending moves at the next party.

TOP FIVE TOP FIVE ALBUMS FILMS Booksmart dir. Olivia Wilde

This female-led comedy has been out for a couple of months now, but if you need some good laughs (and maybe a few tears), you can still catch it at the Broadway Metro!

The Farewell dir. Lulu Wang

A young artist travels to China with her family to say goodbye to the family matriarch. It sounds depressing, but the trailer promises some laughs while pulling at your heartstrings.

Midsommar dir. Ari Aster

It’s so rare for horror movies to occur during the daytime, which makes me so hyped for this film. The plot centers around a festival, so it’s too perfect that it was released in the middle of festival season.

The Last Black Man in San Fransisco dir. Joe Talbot

This film follows a young man trying to reclaim the home his grandfather built in an increasingly gentrified San Francisco. A New York Times reviewer called it “heart-skippingly gorgeous and exultant,” and if that doesn’t pique your curiosity, I’m not sure what will.

Hustlers dir. Lorene Scafaria

Jennifer Lopez, Lizzo, Constance Wu, and Keke Palmer star in this film as a group of women taking power into their own hands. Sign me up.

Fever, Megan Thee Stallion

This album released in May singlehandedly defined summer 2019. It’s a hot girl summer, and we’re all just living in it.

Carte Blanche, DJ Snake

DJ Snake brought so many amazing artists onto this album (ZHU, Tchami and Malaa, to name a few) leaving each track exceptionally unique, but with one important thing in common - they’ll make you want to dance.

7 (EP), Lil Nas X

Lil Nas X is apparently still not done releasing “Old Town Road” remixes, so I’m still not done with this album. After the success of his breakout song, he had big shoes (er, cowboy boots) to fill - and he did it with this album!

The Center Won’t Hold, Sleater-Kinney

Sleater-Kinney, “The Center Won’t Hold” The highly-anticipated return of Sleater-Kinney set to release in August will be produced by indie icon St. Vincent, so there’s no way it’s not going to rock.

Norman Fucking Rockwell, Lana Del Rey

The queen of dreamy sad-girl pop and 1950s/60s Americana aesthetics announced her triumphant return for August 30, and I’m holding my breath until that day comes!

TOP FIVE BOOKS Naturally Tan, A Memoir Tan France

Queer Eye’s fashion guru is much more than the man who made the French tuck famous, and this book gives an intimate look at what makes Tan the Tan we love.

Daisy Jones & The Six Taylor Jenkins Reid

Put on your bell bottoms, play some Fleetwood Mac, and pick up this international bestseller which follows a rock band in 1970s California.

The Goldfinch Donna Tartt

A film adaptation of this 2013 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel is set to release in September. Give it a read first, because who doesn’t love judging book-to-film adaptations?

Wordslut Amanda Montell

This book explores the ways gendered language affects us socially and culturally, and how feminists can reclaim language for ourselves.

One Night in Georgia Celeste O. Norfleet

Set in racially-charged 1968 United States, three women embark on a post-graduation road trip and are faced with finding their own place in history.
