Dear Readers, Valentine’s can feel overwhelming, and tends to be more of a “Hallmark holiday,” so I wanted to restructure how we view February 14th with this edition. Love doesn’t have to always revolve around a partner, and it’s important that we take (at least) a day to appreciate ourselves and the greatness we all hold inside of us. It’s important to cherish not only the romantic relationships in our lives, but the platonic ones too. Make sure you give your mom a call, send a rose to your best friend or even give your coworker a high five in the hallway; feeling appreciated and love feels good, so why not spread that around? Use this Valentine’s Day as a special occasion to treat yo’ self like the royalty that you are: welcome to the antithesis of partnercentric romanticism, and the beginning of earnest and dedicated self-love.

What s Your Love Language Words by Lucy Shadburne

‘

This quiz will help you discover how you prefer to communicate affection towards others, and what things other people do that make you feel most cared about. Whether it’s with your best friend, grandmother, dog, or even yourself, thinking about what expressions of love people appreciate the most will help you develop stronger relationships with anyone and everyone in your life.

1. Your ideal weekend activity is: A. Going out with friends or family B. Making dinner for a couple friends or your roommates C. Writing or doing something with music D. Cuddling with your dog E. Shopping for new clothes

2. The best gift someone could get you would be: A. Treat you to dinner B. Cleaning the entire house C. A long letter about how much they appreciate you D. A coupon for free hugs or a massage gift card E. Something you’ve been needing like socks, headphones, ect.

3. When you’re at the mall, you: A. Shop for a “going out” outfit B. Look only for clothes you need C. Search for the trendiest clothes D. Touch everything and look for something soft E. Nab a shirt for your friend that they had been eyeballing

4. An activity that makes you feel rejuvenated is: A. Spending some time reflecting on life B. Checking things off your to-do list C. Writing yourself inspiring notes or posting on social media D. Napping or getting cozied up in your blankets E. Buying yourself things that you need for the house or indulging in a little chocolate

5. Activities you usually do with your friends are:

...

A. Going for walks or having coffee together B. Baking or helping each other with homework C. Talking about how much you value each other as a friend D. Gym time or yoga E. Making things for each other or gifting them with a surprise activity

deciphering your answers

Mostly C’s Verbal:

You are very verbal with your affection for others, and you love it when people give you words of affirmation. You like to compliment people a lot because you see that as a way of making others feel good. You tend to say nice things more to people who you want to like you. Lack of verbalized affection might make you feel inadequate or undervalued, so be sure to communicate well with the people in your life about what you need emotionally.

Mostly A’s

Mostly D’s

You appreciate your quality time, whether that means time alone with yourself or with your friends and family. If the people you’re spending time with are on their phone, distracted, or doing other things, it makes you feel undervalued. You like to spend one-on-one time with people because it makes you feel like you can get to know them on a deeper level.

You tend to feel most happy wrapped up in blanket with a good book or just on the couch watching TV. You are known for loving hugs and cuddling. You like to be reminded of your intimacy with your friends or family with physical gestures. If someone doesn’t like hugs or if your doggo wriggles out of grasp, it makes you sad.

Mostly B’s

Mostly E’s

You like to express your appreciation for others by doing things to help them out. Actions speak louder than words. You want to make their life easier by doing things for them, and when they do things for you, it makes you feel like they care about your well-being. You are often considered the “mom” or “dad” friend, and the people in your life appreciate your kind mannerisms.

Giving thoughtful gifts is how you like to express your appreciation for someone. When they mention something they want, you always make a mental note of it. It gives you gratification to surprise someone with something that you know will make them happy. When people make things or surprise you with things, it touches you in knowing that they were thinking of you.

LOVING your body for you and nobody else! Words by Cadaxa Chapman Ball Trying to feel good about your body can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. Between the photoshopped advertisements, diet culture, Instagram models and dating apps, it can start to feel like all that matters in the world is to fit a narrow definition of beauty. And even when you know it’s not, when you know how toxic that idea is, it can still get to you. Whenever you’re feeling down about your body and need to get out of that headspace, take a look at the following suggestions.

Your body is an instrument, not an ornament This sentiment, taken from Lindsay Kite’s TED talk “Body Positivity or Body Obsession? Learning to See More & Be More” has helped me more times than I can count. The whole point is that you are a subject, not an object. Our bodies allow us to be active and to participate in the world around us. To feel and to do. We miss out on too much of our lives if we spend the majority of our time thinking about how others are perceiving us instead of how we are perceiving the world.

Tailor your social media Unfollow all those Instagram models and conventionally attractive high school acquaintances in favor of body positive, diverse accounts which celebrate all types of bodies. I’ve found that just looking at more body types more regularly has made me feel better about my own body, even if I’m looking at someone who doesn’t look like me. Sometimes it can feel like scrolling through social media is a passive activity in which you fall into a massive, meme-filled black hole until suddenly it’s 3am and you feel like you should go to bed, but now you feel bad about yourself and turn back to the internet for comfort. Anyway, my point is that scrolling the internet doesn’t have to be a passive activity. You can limit the time you spend online, you can block accounts that feed off of your insecurity to sell diet teas that don’t work, and you can search for people online who will inspire you.

Body positive activities this month at counseling.uoregon.edu/all-sizes-fit

Take care of your mental health Most of the issues we have with our bodies don’t start with our bodies, they start with our minds. It’s easy to fall into an obsessive spiral over a few insecurities, which takes away precious emotions and mental energy. So, do whatever you need to do to destress, relax, and live life to the fullest. Maybe all you need is to take time each day to indulge in a hobby, maybe you need to focus on changing your mindset when you think about your body, or maybe you’ve gotten to a place where you need to talk to someone. Counseling isn’t just for people at rock bottom; it can be a very helpful tool for anyone who is trying to figure out this thing called life (hint: that’s everyone).

getting healthy is great but... Don’t try to get healthy for the wrong reasons. If you want to start eating more fresh, home cooked meals, that’s great, more power to you. Take a moment to reflect and make sure you’re doing it because you want to have a healthy digestive system (among other things), not because you think it’ll help you lose weight or clear your skin. Also, be aware of what being healthy truly means for your body, and don’t listen to the internet. Losing weight is not synonymous with being healthy, and if you ever have questions, refer to a doctor. And again, don’t listen to the internet.

do your research! The beauty industry wants you to feel ugly. If you feel ugly, you’ll buy more of their products. They also want you to think that you’re inherently ugly and that it’s a fault of genetics, not of societal pressure. If you learn about the history of attractiveness, learn about the motives of the beauty industry, and learn about the science behind attractiveness, you’ll learn that you’re great just the way you are. I also recommend learning about the science of nutrition, which is a fascinating subject. The science of nutrition is unfortunately very vulnerable to corporate influence, as many nutritional studies are paid for by various corporations in the sugar industry, the dairy industry, etc. It’s always good practice to make sure that scientific studies are sound, but for nutritional science it’s especially important.

Treat yo self Words by Shannon Enriquez | Photos by Keven Salazar | Modeling by Eleana Essick

The objective this day is simple: to treat yourself to anything and everything you desire; purchasing items with no regret. I propose that this Valentine’s Day weekend should include a “treat yo self” day, so I’ve compiled a list of items and places in the Eugene area to ensure that you treat. yo. self. Achieving the perfect treat yo self day is an art form one can only dream of achieving. However, with this guide, you’ll be sure to treat yourself to the highest caliber.

Schedule a day at the spa:

Are you living your life on a budget, conforming to the “broke college student” stereotype? Not on treat yo self day you’re not. Book yourself a day at the Pearl Day Spa, a mere ten minute drive from campus. Located in an old victorian home, the spa is not only aesthetically pleasing, but has massages starting at $80 and facials starting at $90. Taking a break from the chaos and stress of school, even if it is just for an hour, can clear your mind and help you keep calm for the upcoming school week.

Sit Back and Relax at the Hot Springs:

If you want a day at the spa but physically cannot afford one, let me first say: I understand. That being said, a facial and relaxing bath are not completely off the topic of discussion. Drive up to Terwilliger Hot Springs to enjoy a hot soak in the cold of winter. The steam from the hot spring will give you the facial you need, but if you want to truly treat yo self, buy a $2 facemask from Hirons on Franklin Blvd., before hitting the freeway, to enhance your hot spring experience.

Actually buy what you've been keeping in your shopping cart:

I know I can’t be the only one who online shops, puts numerous items into my shopping cart, but can never seem to hit the “checkout” button in the end. This valentine’s day, treat yourself to hitting that “checkout” button and buying the wardrobe of your dreams. Whether you purchase everything in your shopping cart or just one fun thing, it’s up to you and how you want your day of treating yourself to unfold.

Take yourself out on a date:

Don’t wait around to be asked out, take matters into your own hands and take a trip to Crater Lake. Grab your friends and prepare for a road trip to this scenic and must-see destination. With the surrounding areas of the lake covered with snow this time of year, this is sure to have a plethora of Instagram-worthy photo-ops, making Crater Lake the perfect winter destination to treat yo self. If the outdoors is too cold for you to bare, have a night-in and Indulge with no regret with your favorite snack. Whether that be ordering Sweet Basil to your dorm room or ordering a pizza for yourself to feast on, there is no shortage of snacks on treat yo self day.

Stay indoors and explore the luxuries of DIY:

Sometimes treating yourself consists of staying inside all day and avoiding all responsibilities. Whether you have had a rough week or a pleasant one, we all need time to ourselves. Run a bubble bath and put on a facemask, because even though your week might have been disappointing, that doesn’t mean your skin has to be. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of DIY face masks on Pinterest and on the internet that you can find that cater to your specific skin type and are perfect for your lazy day of treating yourself.

Extend the Treat Yo Self Experience To Your Friends:

Assuring that you treat yourself is the main goal and purpose of treat yo self. However, encouraging your friends to indulge in themselves and experience treat yo self day for themselves is also acceptable. Send them a batch of Insomnia cookies to get them involved in the holiday of treating yourself. For just $10 you can send them six warm cookies, or what Insomnia Cookies calls “The Sixpack”, and a lifetime interest in treating themselves. M O N D AY,

Living Your Best Life by Yourself Moving out of your family home, or even moving out of the comfort of the dorms, can be a challenging time. Living on your own requires being on top of everything, and that can be a daunting task. There are a lot of little things that should be common knowledge that may not be as customary as you’d think. The following are some tips and tricks that I’d like to introduce back into common knowledge.

Staying Safe

If you are going to be living alone, you’ll need to be extra careful about being safe (especially if you are female identifying or gender non-conforming, unfortunately). Don’t slack on keeping your doors locked, even when you’re at home. Keep your bicycle locked as close to your residence as possible. Also, consider carrying pepper spray or a taser whenever you leave the house at night. Even though it might be a little costly, I’d also recommend keeping at least one light on at night so you’re less likely to be robbed.

Cutting Costs

My first bit of advice is to keep the heat to a minimum. Avoid baseboard heating if you can and try to find a place with good insulation to help keep your electric bill down. Using LED light bulbs will also help you cut costs, as will taking shorter and cooler showers (I love those hot, scalding 45 minute showers too, but maybe save those for a special treat). Finally, turn off those fairy lights at night! They’re super pretty and make a room cozier, but they burn out quickly if you keep them on all the time, and they waste energy.

Laundry Options

If you have on-site laundry units, make sure you check to see if they require quarters. If they do, I’d recommend going to your bank and asking for several rolls of quarters to last you the whole year, if possible. Running out of quarters is no fun and neither is making frequent trips to the bank, especially if you don’t have reliable transportation. My next bit of advice is to avoid waiting until the last minute to do laundry. Doing smaller loads throughout the week will allow you to always have clean clothes, and if the washer and dryer are unavailable one day it won’t be the end of the world.

More relaxing tips at dailyemerald.com/essentials

Kitchen Do’s and Don’ts

I’ve noticed my roommates do too many unsafe things that I honestly thought were common sense to avoid, so I thought I’d share a random assortment of kitchen tips:

1. Don’t: leave open tin cans in the fridge

Why? Metals can leak into your food and make you sick.

2. Don’t: leave wooden utensils in the sink

Why? They can grow bacteria and mold. You should also avoid cracking and warping them in the dishwasher.

3. Don’t: leave perishable foods out for more than 4 hours

Why? The service industry follows this rule for a reason. The longer you leave out perishable foods, the longer you risk them going bad.

4. Don’t: mix bleach and ammonia

Why? It’ll kill you.

5. Do: pay attention to how much dish soap to put in the dishwasher

Why? I mean, you can experiment with filling your kitchen with foam if you want, that’s your choice.

6. Do: store foods in dry, cool places

Why? Bacteria and mold grow in warm, damp places. If you have a cabinet above your stove, don’t put your food in it. Condensation from boiling water/etc. can make your food go bad quickly.

Get Comfortable

This is for your mental health. It may seem like a hassle, but putting effort into making your living space feel warm and comfortable, especially if you live alone, will help ease homesickness and boost your overall sense of well-being.

SaySay “yes” noto ato gloom: happyroom & healthy person al space Words and Photos by Julianna Bourjeaurd Your space is a reflection of your identity – the jasmine candle at its wick’s end, the crumpled up Thai food receipt on the floor, that poster of the Red Hot Chili Peppers holding their sock-covered members – it’s part of who you are. So, if stress levels are high and sunshine levels are low, it’s only natural for your room to go a bit askew too. Maintaining health through interacting with healthy environments, or personal environmental health, is so important. While college may mean less-than-ideal living circumstances and high-stress academic and social situations, your bedroom becomes your temple, and should be treated as such. According to the University of Minnesota’s Taking Charge of Your Health & Wellbeing initiative, we need to “make our personal space a refuge, a place to truly escape stress and the consequences of stress.” During my university career I’ve adopted a personal variation of feng shui to promote harmony in my space. It doesn’t revolve around the five elements, but the five senses: sight, smell, sound, touch and taste. Using this as a foundation, these are my tips to transform spaces into ones that positively influence dispositions.

Taste

This one may be the least applicable, but perhaps you have a snack stash. I keep my tea collection in my room and have a pot in the morning or before bed to calm the mind. Yum. Being in control of a space allows you to feel more in control in other aspects of your life too. If you want more guidance on how to transform your room into a healing environment, take the personal environment quiz on Taking Charge of Your Health & Wellbeing’s website – it deciphers the wellbeing of your environment and provides suggestions on how to improve it. We all understand the rage of being cooped up in a dingy, stuffy university building all day, so don’t let that be the case when you get home!

touch

We all know that person who cranks the temperature even when it’s 75 outside, but apparently it’s healthier to sleep in cooler temperatures. This way you can also induce calmness with fluffy pillows and soft blankets.

sight

The big one. First off, what do you need to see? Light. Always open your blinds in the daytime regardless of weather – according to a Swiss Federal Institute of Technology study, people have higher energy levels in natural light than in artificial light (and it reduces your EWEB bill). For the evening, I have about 10 candles each with mood-specific scents and twinkling lights above my bed to encourage a sense of warmth… if only I had a Jacuzzi too. Next, decorate with items that bring you joy, like the great Marie Kondo says. Whether it’s a Himalayan salt lamp, photos of loved ones, or a weird wooden cat that reminds you of home – incorporate things that speak to you. Another mood-booster is life, AKA houseplants. It may seem daunting, but that’s what succulents are for. For the green thumbs, air-purifying plants such as the Areca Palm are great for removing indoor toxins. Check out our website for tips on which houseplants are best for you. And seriously: clear your clutter. I am currently staring at a pile of clothes on my floor and my heart rate is scaling. Take the extra few seconds to put your stuff away when getting ready and make your bed upon rising – this avoids the extra task of “clean room” on the to-do list.

smell

Nobody likes foul smells. Don’t eat in your room and do laundry often to avoid lingering odors. As I previously mentioned, scented candles are affordable manifestations of relaxation. Diffusers are also aromatic tools, which heat essential oils until they evaporate into the air. Lavender and peppermint are my go-to oils when winding down – I even drop some onto my pillows before bed.

sound

I love music – my record player and stereo system are my beacons of peace in my room. For my roommate, it’s her noisemaker. Essentially, any sort of speaker to play soulsoothing sounds can be hugely beneficial when improving your mindset. On the flip side, if you’re into silence, hello earplugs.

Tip: Thrift stores are a great place to start for cheap decor and D.I.Y. style
