BY ZACK DEMARS • TWITTER @ZACK_DEMARS First-year students have a new, six-week series of classes available to them covering a number of topics that might be unfamiliar during their first time on campus. e “Welcome to the Flock” classes will cover nutrition, the Student Recreation Center, healthy sexual relationships, money management and more. e classes will occur twice a week for the first six weeks of fall term. According to Julia Wysocka, the student director for transition programs who leads the series, “ e first six weeks of any freshman experience are usually the most challenging. A lot of students face disclusion; they feel lost.”

Reflecting on why she wanted to be a part of the student orientation team, Wysocka recalled her own high school and first-year experiences.

“I personally didn’t have a great high school experience and transition to university was a little hard for me just because I was from out of state,” said Wysocka. She said this experience guided her choice to become a student orientation staffer and, new this year, a leader of the Welcome Team. e first week of the program has already begun. second class, which centered around campus dining options and meal point budgeting.

Following a presentation from the Welcome Team about the various venues and options across campus, an activity tasked participants with planning a week’s worth of meals while staying within their meal point budget — a challenge all students living in the residence halls must come to master.

Anna Mattson, a journalism and international studies major from Tillamook, Oregon, attended the class to “find better options for food on campus.” Mattson has some goals she wanted to work toward by attending the class, specifically to “eat less starches and less sugar, and eat more protein.”

her to resources where she can get the food she needs. Given what she learned at one class, Mattson said she might attend some of the upcoming sessions as well.

Wysocka, a senior, said she is most excited for the budgeting class scheduled for Oct. 29.

“No one’s ever really sat down with me and talked about saving money, or what loans really are,” said Wysocka.

“No one ever really told me when I need to start making payments or what type of loans I have.”

According to the program’s website, upcoming sessions include “Welcome to Eugene,” with tips for navigating the city and a trip to dinner downtown; “Getting Swole,” with a guided tour of the Rec and “What Exactly is an Orgasm?,” focusing on healthy sexual relationships.

A NEWS NEW PROGRAM PROMOTES SAFE TRANSPORTATION FROM FOOTBALL GAMES

BY EMILY MATLOCK • TWITTER @EMILYD_MATLOCK Along the south gates of Autzen Stadium this football season, Safety Ambassadors will engage with University of Oregon students before they enter the stadium. Equipped with games, coupons for free food and giveaway items, the ambassadors strike up conversations with students about the new ride service offered at games and educate them about other campus resources. e Safety Ambassadors is a group of students that provides rides from Autzen Stadium during football games to students who may be alone, intoxicated or unable to get home safely on their own. e program directors tested it last year and put the program into full effect this football season.

In addition, the Safety Ambassadors promotes other ride options from the game, such as the Lane Transit District buses that are free with a UO student ID. “ e idea of the Safety Ambassador program at football was to provide safe transportation to students from the football game — those who likely are intoxicated or denied entry,” said Ashley McCrea, UOPD’s Safe Rides programs manager. e Safety Ambassadors falls under the umbrella of the Safe Rides programs, which includes Safe Ride, Designated Driver Shuttle and Campus Shuttle, all of which are overseen by UOPD. Unlike Safe Ride and DDS, however, Safety Ambassadors only operates during football games. Student employees spend about an hour before kickoff educating students about their transportation options and accept ride requests until the beginning of the third quarter, McCrea said. eir tent is located outside the south, student-entry gates.

In a partnership with UO Athletics, the

ambassadors also promotes Autzen’s spectator code of conduct and informs fans of new policies in place this football season, especially the no re-entry policy if spectators leave the stadium. ey also hand out freebies, such as flashlights and ID card holders that adhere to the back of phone cases. e ID card holders come with information cards that list phone numbers for campus resources such as the police, Safe Rides programs and the SAFE hotline for sexual assault. e ambassadors also play games with students to engage with them and keep things fun while also educating, McCrea said. Students can win coupons for playing a spin-the-wheel game with an ambassador or can sign up for a raffle to win a pair of free Pit Crew shoes, donated

by UO Athletics.

“I think one of the best parts of the job is when we’re doing the information session before we start giving rides,” said senior Katie Mendiburu, one of the safety ambassadors. “People get really excited that they’re not going to have to worry about how they’re going to get home.”

While the Safety Ambassadors program aims to make sure everyone has a safe ride home, rides are limited due to heavy traffic in the area and a small, though growing, staff.

In this way, they have the unique task of identifying students who need rides most and informing others about different transportation options.

“To some extent, their job is to really be the eyes and ears there at the site, engage people and connect with the other game services to identify people who might be in need and really kind of focus on the most at-risk students,” said Kelly McIver, spokesperson for UOPD.

REFLECTS ON GROWING UP IN EUGENE AT INTIMATE WOW HALL SHOW

BY JORDAN MONTERO • TWITTER @MONTERO_JOR At 16 years old, Michelle Zauner wore bootcut jeans and Forever 21 t-shirts while she played simple sets at WOW Hall with only an acoustic guitar.

A decade later, she joked with the crowd at yet another WOW Hall performance. During a homecoming show on Friday night, Zauner, who now plays under the moniker Japanese Breakfast, said, “You have these moments in your life where you think, ‘I was such hot shit.’” roughout the night’s set, Zauner reflected on her time growing up in Eugene between performances of glimmery pop. She displayed a distinct intimacy with the venue and the crowd.

Shedding light on the various inspirations of her songs — many coming from her experiences in this city — her performance was charming and powerful. e Canadian four-piece band Ought opened the show. e band performed artsy, post-punk songs like “Diseducation,” “Men For Miles” and “Disgraced in America.” While energetic, the performance also maintained a contemplative nature. e group was most stimulating during its breakdowns, when drummer Tim Keen kept a more complicated beat and guitarist/vocalist Tim Darcy’s distorted guitar peaked through gloomy layers of keys and bass.

Ought’s performance was more ominous than that of Japanese Breakfast, but it set the energy in the room to a mellow excitement. During the

tasteful punk tracks, Darcy’s rounded vocals dripped, sometimes spilling over the music. Once they exited the stage, the crowd was in heavy anticipation for the headliner.

Zauner, wearing a green striped dress that playfully reflected the stage lights, arrived with the rest of her band on stage to great applause from the young audience. She began with “Diving Woman,” the first song from her latest album, “Soft Sounds from Another Planet.”

Her light-hearted demeanor allowed her to groove to her own compositions freely. Zauner’s wonderful cantations were the centerpiece of the performance; her voice fluctuated between whispers and shouts. During her performance of “Everybody Wants to Love You,” she exhibited the perfect amount of rasp — her shrieks were heartstopping. Zauner is even more captivating on stage than in her studio tracks. Despite the fact that her music is generally more saddening in nature, Zauner seemed happy to be back in a familiar place. “ is is such a crazy special show for me to play at the WOW Hall,” Zauner told the audience. “I’ve seen many a gig here and played many first shows here when I was 16 and 18. It’s really special.”

She played a white-and-black electric guitar, and sometimes put it down to focus on singing at the mic. Halfway through the show, she picked up an acoustic guitar and delivered beautiful renditions of “Till Death” and “Triple 7” with just one other

band member on stage. roughout the show, Zauner shared a few anecdotes about her time in Eugene. She mentioned the dreaded Snowball Dances that she attended at Roosevelt Middle School (which informed her song “Boyish”), having her best friend cut her hair in her friend’s apartment on Willamette Street and junior prom, where she wore a suit and her date wore a dress. She wrote the album “Psychopomp” at her parents’ house beyond Spencer’s Butte shortly after her mom passed away from cancer.

“So many of these songs are written about my time in Eugene, so it feels really good to play them here,” she said. “But they have a sort of haunted quality. What was a really cool place to grow up turned out to be a really sad place to come back to.”

She exited the stage for the first time after a performance of “ e Machinist.” “It’s about falling in love with a robot,” she said in a humorous tone.

When the song ended, Zauner thanked the crowd and left the stage, leaving the audience at WOW Hall wanting more.

After a lasting applause and shouts of “encore,” Japanese Breakfast returned to the stage and performed a cover of e Cranberries’ “Dreams.”

Zauner and the rest of her band showed much appreciation for the crowd as they rocked out for the last time. After the cover, she thanked everyone again and left the stage, professing her love for the city that she was raised in.

Taylor’s Bar:

THEN, NOW AND BEYOND

In the nearly 100 years since Taylor’s Bar and Grill opened its doors, it has been known for rambunctious energy. One owner drove a motorcycle through the bar. Another fought off a man who bit his thumb.

But recently, Taylor’s has come under fire for allegations of more serious offenses than general debauchery: sexual assault, drugging drinks and overcharging patrons. e Oregon Liquor Control Commission cited Taylor’s for 29 offenses in 14 months, and has recommended along with the city of Eugene that Taylor’s be stripped of its license to serve alcohol.

Taylor’s current owner Ramzy Hattar recently requested a hearing to make the case for why the bar should keep its license.

A judge will then decide whether Taylor’s license will be renewed, restricted or revoked entirely.

If the bar loses its license, the most popular off campus party destination would never be the same. Taylor’s has a storied past, and its legacy is at stake.

A ‘65 Honda motorcycle, a blackjack club and an FBI raid Father and son duo Fred and Herschel Taylor built Taylor’s in 1922 after hiring a lawyer to break Eugene’s former building moratorium. e bar was originally called, “Ye Campa Shoppe” before the name was changed to Taylor’s soon after Prohibition ended in 1933.

“In Fred’s autobiography, he wrote, ‘Had I known the Great

Depression was around the corner, I’d have never bought the place,” said Herschel’s grandson Todd. e ownership moved from Fred, to Herschel, to Herschel’s son Rod after he returned from service in World War II. Todd still remembers the wackiness his father brought to the place. He said Rod once drove ‘65 Honda motorcycle through Taylor’s.

“He opened the door, and shot through just, ‘Beep beep! Beep beep!’ Just because he could.”

At the time, Taylor’s was not allowed to serve alcohol because the OLCC had imposed a 1,000foot “dry zone” around the UO campus. is was to limit students’ access to alcohol — particularly those returning from war, according to Todd. With the bar’s

primary income source stripped away from the family, Rod had to come up with different ways to pay the bills.

“Rod became,” Todd said, between chuckles, “the biggest bookie between San Francisco and Portland.”

Todd said Rod took bets from several high profile Eugene community members, including the former district attorney. e FBI ended up busting Rod, but not before the DA secretly called ahead to warn Rod the cops were on their way to his home.

“He got a little phone call that said, ‘Hey get rid of everything.

You’re going to have a knock on the door in a while.’ And sure enough they did,” Todd said. “Well, [Rod] forgot to take something out of his car that showed like

a betting line, odds, stuff out of Vegas. And so they popped him.”

Rod eventually gave control of the bar to Jon LaBranch — the current owner of Rennie’s — in 1977. e bar regained its liquor license during LaBranch’s tenure, but only served beer and wine.

After LaBranch’s lease was up, Todd took over the bar from 1980 to 1983.

During that time, the atmosphere was a far cry from the nightclub-like environment that exists today. Todd hired live bands playing blues music. e bar was half the size it is today; nevertheless, wild stuff still occurred.

“One time I got attacked at Taylor’s when I was running it,” Todd said. “A drunk guy came in, and he was all jacked up on something.”

Todd said he noticed the guy bumping people on the dance floor. He tapped the man on the shoulder and asked what he was doing. e man sprung on him, grabbed Todd’s neck with two hands and threw Todd to the ground.

“I go for his eyes is what I do. I try to thumb him in the eye,” Todd said. “He’s all jacked up — so quick it was like a cat, and he just went ‘Arrgh!’ and he bit my thumb.”

Todd said the doorman came over to drag the guy out, but Todd’s thumb was still hooked into this guy’s mouth and Todd was dragged along. e thumb-biter wriggled away from the doorman and ran down the street, but Todd was right behind with vengeance.

“I was going to even the score.

He had my blood now,” Todd said. “I have a lead-weighted blackjack and I go [demonstrates an overhand swing of his club] and I was just going to take his collarbone out.” e guy turned around as Todd was on his downswing, so instead of breaking bone, the club struck the man in the chest and knocked him down. It was enough to scare him off, and the police later caught the phantom thumb-biter in the nearby hospital. “ e worst part of the story — the guy had syphilis,” Todd said.

“So I couldn’t touch my wife for like a month. at was the worst part of the deal.”

But after that, Todd had had enough of the day-to-day operations of Taylor’s.

“It’s a lot easier being a landlord than it is being the actual guy on the front lines,” Todd said.

From smoky blues bar to the modern Taylor’s From 1983 to 1999, Taylor’s was

passed from owner to owner until then 22-year-old Chuck Hare took the reins. But back then, he said it was a small, scary place. Women were reluctant to visit the bar.

“It was a smoky little blues bar,” Hare said.

He set out to turn Taylor’s into a place where college students wanted to go, rather than Eugene locals. Hare hired a younger staff and more workers from Greek life, revamped the menu and promoted the bar to college students. Eugene’s older crowd drifted to other establishments.

Hare took over three nextdoor businesses to expand the bar in 2001. e acquired space was able to accommodate a growing UO student population.

According to data from the UO Office of the Registrar, the UO student population increased by 37 percent during Hare’s time running Taylor’s.

“As the student population grew, we became one of the big bars on campus,” Hare said. “Business got better.”

Hare even installed a bed in his basement office to sleep at Taylor’s so he would be up on time to prepare the bar in the morning after working until 2 a.m.

UO students of that era echo the rising stature of Taylor’s in the early 2000s. Jen Humphrey, a UO student from 1997 to 2001, said Taylor’s was a huge fixture in her and her friends’ lives.

“It became the go-to meeting spot,” Humphrey said. “Whether it was in between classes and you had some lunch out on the patio, or you went there before or after a game to celebrate a victory.”

Bronson Oahu played football at UO from 2011 to 2015. During his junior and senior years, Oahu said he frequented Taylor’s, where he met several of his closest friends to this day.

“Even when you have people from out of state coming to visit you for school,” Oahu said, “they all want to go to Taylor’s and have a good time. It’s an experience.” ese testimonies reflect a changed Taylor’s. A bar focused on college students above all else.

Hare said he looks back fondly on his years running Taylor’s.

He said he learned more about business and life in the first month of running Taylor’s than he did spending five years at UO. He ultimately outgrew his own creation, selling the business in May 2017. While great for business, Hare said the DJs and “dance club” environment were never his personal scene.

Reflecting on a recent visit he had made to Taylor’s, Hare said, “I didn’t miss it.”

Taylor’s today, and beyond e current owner, Ramzy Hattar, was drawn to Taylor’s for a variety of reasons, nostalgia being a primary one. Hattar is a UO alumnus with memories of his own at Taylor’s. He also runs other bars and restaurants around Oregon, such as the River Pig Saloon. Hattar said he anticipated certain challenges when he bought Taylor’s, but not the “bad” media coverage the bar has received over the past two years.

Previous reports by the Emerald and the Register Guard in 2016, while Hare was still managing, revealed Taylor’s was repeatedly accused of overcharging credit cards and accused of multiple drug-related incidents, including a bartender being accused of drugging patrons.

Hare said he did not condone any of the alleged incidents under his watch, and although he can’t be sure whether they happened, he rules out the possibility that anyone he hired was involved.

“But to say that that never happened — people come in off the streets,” Hare said. “And there’s creepy people in this world and there’s bad people in this world.” e OLCC’s notice in August

2018 cited 29 incidents of poor compliance with liquor laws — not including the incidents above — and a history of “serious and persistent problems” that happened under Hattar’s ownership, including incidents of excessive intoxication, disorderly conduct, theft, assault and sexual assault.

Since the OLCC issued Taylor’s the notice on Aug. 22, the bar has seen at least two reported assaults and one dispute, according to Eugene and UO police logs.

Hattar has implemented several changes to try to address some of the issues raised by these various reports, including implementing a cover charge for non-UO students.

But Eric Clarke, current general manager of Taylor’s, said they felt it was alienating alumni customers.

One change that has stuck is banning a beloved drink called “Fuck-it buckets” because the larger containers they are served in were at a higher risk of being drugged, according to Hattar.

“I cannot and I will not ever have that tied to anything I own,” Hattar said of the drugging allegations.

Hattar also noted the capacity and popularity of Taylor’s, saying that the volume of people is greater than most other bars, so the rate of

lot of money each year just to keep that thing from falling down.”

Todd said his ultimate vision is to have a massive block party on 13th Avenue during Taylor’s 100th year of operation that is coming up in less than three years. After that, he wants to build a brand new building. Initial drawings for the building show at least three stories of growth, with a modern design (shown right). Todd wants to include a rooftop bar, student housing, and incorporate aspects of the current building such as the signature spire and the sign. He put the chances of this new redesign happening at 50-50.

“We need a new building,” Todd said. “ at thing is 100 years old.

It’s been patched together 100 times.”

Because of Taylor’s fascinating and complicated legacy, many people have vested interests in the future of the bar. It is a fixture as well-known to students as the university itself, and a campus without Taylor’s is difficult to imagine for many.

“Some people love it, some people hate it,” Chuck Hare said.

“Taylor’s is what it is, it can’t be necessarily all things to all people.

For a lot of people, it’s some place that’s really special.”

incidents is inevitably greater.

Matthew VanSickle of OLCC said he recognizes that the capacity argument is easy to “lob out there,” but he argues that all bars should be held to the same standard. “ e commission’s position is you can’t hold one institution, one bar, above anybody else,” VanSickle said. “Everybody has to live up to the same standards of supporting public safety and community livability.”

Hattar said he questions if other campus bars are being held to the same standards as Taylor’s. He also said he is not worried about Taylor’s losing its license as long as he works with the appropriate authorities.

“I know what I expect my standard to be at my bar,” Hattar said. “I expect it to always be under control.”

Regardless of the liquor license controversy, the future of Taylor’s is up in the air. Todd Taylor and the Taylor family still ultimately own the property on which Taylor’s is built. And they have plans to fundamentally change the Taylor’s building.

OPINION AMERICA’S RE-RE-RE-RECKONING WITH RAPE CULTURE

As I fought back the surreal feeling of déjà vu, I read through countless #whyididntreport stories, mostly from fellow women. For the second or third time this year, I joined the latest hashtag and went on to describe the countless times I had been exposed to predatory and violent sexual behaviors since I was a preteen. I admitted that I didn’t report a single one of those experiences to the police.

But that doesn’t mean they didn’t happen.

After two weeks of intense controversy over Dr. Christine Blasey Ford’s allegations that SCOTUS nominee Brett Kavanaugh drunkenly sexually assaulted her at a party in 1983, the Senate Judiciary Committee finally heard direct testimony from Ford and Kavanaugh last ursday. roughout that hearing, Dr. Ford was able to recount with profound clarity not only her traumatic memories, but also the cognitive science behind the few lapses in her recollections. Many accounts called her testimony “riveting” and “heart-wrenching.”

Despite this, Senate Judiciary Committee Republicans voted on ursday to move forward with the confirmation process — only delaying a full Senate vote at the last minute over the concerns of Republican Senator Jeff Flake of Arizona . e senator called for the White House to reopen a limited FBI investigation (an investigation Ford has requested multiple times) into Dr. Ford’s claims. But the one-week cap on the investigation seems to suggest that, regardless of what the FBI discovers, Republicans in the Senate intend to move forward to confirm Kavanaugh so long as they can argue that there is no definitive proof of the assault.

Every time I hear someone suggest that there is no proof that Kavanaugh assaulted Ford, I hear them saying also that there is no proof that I was ever assaulted. If her word as a research psychologist with multiple degrees from Stanford isn’t proof

enough, then neither is mine. Neither is any woman’s.

It seems that every few years, we have another reckoning with American rape culture. We have gone through seemingly endless reiterations: #metoo, #timesup, #whyididntreport, #believewomen and more. Every year, people talk about those hashtags as if they have fixed our rape culture merely by creating awareness of it.

Awareness is not enough. e politics of Kavanaugh’s hearings are unequivocal evidence that we haven’t even begun to fix the problem.

Regardless of whether or not Kavanaugh is confirmed, American rape culture will persist as long as we continue to defer to the rhetoric of rape culture. Our language — the questions we ask and the way we ask them, the information we consider to be true, the way we assign credibility — is steeped in the history and practice of violence against women. ink, for example, about the ongoing debates about what counts as sexual assault or harassment, and how long it counts for. Everyone, especially men, seems to want clear guidelines. e way that these conversations take place indicates a general unwillingness to treat women generously, and thus the underlying question seems to be: “How far across the line can someone get without consequences?” instead of “What is an appropriate, comfortable distance from the line?”

Another example of rape culture logic: Does it still count that Kavanaugh assaulted Dr. Ford if it was more than 30 years ago? Does sexual assault or rape only count if you report it?

Trump certainly seems to think as much: “I have no doubt that, if the attack on Dr. Ford was as bad as she says, charges would have been immediately filed with local Law Enforcement Authorities by either her or her loving parents. I ask that she bring those filings forward so that we can learn date, time, and place.”

reasonable to ask for a report to substantiate a claim of sexual assault.

However, the structural constraints on reporting make it nearly impossible for most victims to even file — let alone to actually go to court.

In a vicious cycle, survivors are told they need proof to file a report of an assault, while also being told that a report is the only acceptable form of proof.

Even those who are tested with rape kits might find themselves without proof of being raped, as every U.S. state has a backlog of thousands and thousands of untested rape kits. ose who actually make it to court shouldn’t plan on receiving justice: RAINN found that “out of every 1000 instances of rape, only 13 cases are referred to a prosecutor, and only seven cases will lead to a felony conviction.”

So why would anyone put herself in a situation that is so likely to end with not being believed, being disregarded and even attacked?

Why would they risk so much when the odds of receiving justice are so abysmally low? ese questions are not theoretical.

Dr. Ford has already received numerous death threats from those who believe she falsely accused Kavanaugh; as far as I can tell, Kavanaugh has not received any death threats for allegedly attempting to rape Dr. Ford, even as statements

from his other accusers continue to pour in.

Nonetheless, many people continue to insist that Dr. Ford might be lying before they consider whether Kavanaugh might be — even though Ford has everything to lose from lying, and Kavanaugh has everything to gain from it. We ask if this could be a false rape allegation before asking if it could be true; if she could be mistaken about Kavanaugh’s identity before asking if she could be correct. is order is not accidental.

Nearly any discussion of sexual violence seems to turn to the topic of “false rape allegations.” e National Sexual Violence Resource Center estimates that one in five women will be raped at some point in their lives (as opposed to one in 71 men) and that as few as 2 percent of reports of rape are false. But the rhetoric of rape culture does not require attention to facts, as exemplified best by the National Coalition for Men. is Men’s Rights Activist group claims (incorrectly) that anywhere from 25 to 60 percent of rape reports are false, making men the victims of a “non-existent rape epidemic on college campuses and rape hysteria.”

Rape culture logic relies heavily on the sentiment that feminists have created a world that is more dangerous for men than women.

Trump has relied heavily on this rhetoric over the last week, making

8 OPINION claims like: “It’s a very dangerous period in our country and it’s being perpetrated by some very evil people.” e fixation on whether or not Kavanaugh should have his whole life destroyed by these allegations reveals an underlying belief that men are the real victims of rape culture.

Several Republican male senators, who reclaimed speaking time from the prosecutor they had hired to question both Kavanaugh and Ford, used their platform on ursday to rail against the supposed mistreatment of Kavanaugh rather than to question him. Perhaps most memorable was Senator Graham shouting at Democrats that “if you vote no, you’re legitimizing the most despicable thing I have seen in my time in politics.” And of course, most of Kavanaugh’s unexpectedly aggressive testimony on ursday centered around this logic, as he claimed angrily that “my family and my name have been totally and permanently destroyed.”

Nevermind the fact that Kavanaugh is not being criminally prosecuted — he is being vetted for a lifetime promotion to the highest court in the nation. If unconfirmed, Kavanaugh will merely return to his judicial seat on the Federal Appeals Court.

Conversations about Kavanaugh’s supposed suffering also conveniently forget the reality that privileged men have rarely seen their lives ruined by allegations of sexual misconduct: Woody Allen, Kobe Bryant, R. Kelly, Roman Polanski, Mike Tyson and Donald Trump are just a few notable examples of men who have gone on to enjoy successful careers after being accused (many of them more than once) of sexual assault or rape. It has been less than a year since #metoo, and Aziz Ansari and Louis CK have already returned to work; and we shouldn’t forget that Justice Clarence omas still sits on the Supreme Court bench today.

When taken to an extreme, the “men as victims of women” logic can be twisted into outright violence. Incels (“involuntary celibates”) have long used Reddit forums to advocate for rape as a way to punish women who refuse to provide them with sex. As one man wrote: “One day incels will realize their true strength and numbers, and will overthrow this oppressive feminist system. … start envisioning a world where WOMEN FEAR YOU.” ough people who accuse Dr. Ford of lying might not be consciously trying to create fear among women, the effect is the same. at’s because, at its core, rape culture is a culture of fear. Women are afraid of reporting because they are well-aware that their allegations, in most cases, will not be taken seriously.

Retribution is a factor too, given that eight out of 10 victims know their rapist personally.

In practice, those who report are likely to be greeted with open hostility.

We shouldn’t forget that law professor Anita Hill was mercilessly grilled and discredited by a panel of all-white and all-male senators during the Clarence omas confirmation hearings 27 years ago. Many of those same men sat on the Senate Judiciary Committee last ursday during Dr. Ford’s hearing, yelling about the unfair treatment of Kavanaugh.

Even as other women continue to come forward with accusations of Kavanaugh’s sexual misconduct, the profound disbelief in their allegations persists. Deborah Ramirez, a Yale classmate of Kavanaugh’s, has reported that Kavanaugh pushed his penis into her face and forced her to touch it at a party in 1983, only a year after his alleged assault on Dr. Ford. is account has been corroborated by several witnesses. Julie Swetnick now alleges that she was raped by Kavanaugh at a party after being drugged. Swetnick’s lawyer, Michael Avenatti, has stated that he has significant evidence of Kavanaugh’s participation in the drugging and gang rapes of a string of women during the 1980s.

Despite this, Kavanaugh continues to deny all allegations, Republicans in the Senate continue to vote him forward, and Donald Trump continues to voice support for him via Twitter: “ e Democrats are playing a high level CON GAME in their vicious effort to destroy a fine person. It is called the politics of destruction. Behind the scene the Dems are laughing. Pray for Brett Kavanaugh and his family!” ese denials raise doubts about whether Kavanaugh will ever be held accountable, criminally or otherwise.

In Bill Cosby’s case, more than 60 women reported him before there was enough proof to put him on trial — and he still walked away with only three counts of sexual assault. It’s hard to say what could finally tip the scales in the Kavanaugh controversy. e argument that Dr. Ford or any of the other accusers should not be believed because there is not enough proof is just evidence that the American system of rape culture is still alive and working as efficiently as ever to keep the cycle going. As Rebecca Solnhit of e Guardian so aptly put it when commenting on why Dr. Ford didn’t report in 1982: “Why should we now expect an ordinary schoolgirl to have succeeded where Olympic athletes and Hollywood actors failed to get a hearing or justice?”

For a brief moment, it looked like an Oregon rally. e Ducks were up 17-14, attempting to push the match into a fourth set after dropping the first two.

But back-to-back kills from Arizona State’s Alyse Ford propelled the set to a tie at 19 and after winning a ball challenge, the Sun Devils took ahold of the reins and won the set, costing the Ducks any chance at redemption.

“It was rough, pretty much everything was rough,” Oregon head coach Matt Ulmer said. “I thought we were out of control, kind of emotionally I thought we were out of control. All of a sudden, we forgot our jobs, what we were supposed to do. [We] got really undisciplined, got really sloppy and those things are contagious.”

Arizona State (12-4, Pac-12 3-1) swept the No. 12 Ducks 3-0 and broke Oregon’s six-match winning streak against the Sun Devils Sunday afternoon at Matthew Knight Arena.

From the beginning of set one, Oregon (9-5, Pac12 2-2) became quickly plagued with errors and bad plays. e Ducks recorded 18 attack errors and tied their third-highest number of service errors (7) of the season.

“We just really needed to be dependable players today,” Ulmer said. “ is was like the worst of it

today. at’s how bad we can be. I think we saw our low today. ey gave us every chance, they gave us opportunities and we just gave them more.”

In set one, the Ducks recorded 13 kills to ASU’s 11 and setter August Raskie led both teams with 11 assists amid the 25-23 loss. at’s where the Oregon energy stopped. e Ducks couldn’t find a lead in the second set.

Arizona State held a five-point lead twice and took the set 25-22.

Oregon’s 11-6 lead in the third set was its biggest of the night, but ASU took advantage of additional Oregon errors and a winning challenge to complete the sweep with a 25-22 third set win.

Middle blocker Ronika Stone carried Oregon with 13 kills. Seniors Lindsey Vander Weide and Raskie continued their team-leading double-double count, both recording their seventh of the season. Vander Weide totaled 11 kills and 11 digs, and Raskie had a team-leading 37 assists and 13 digs.

Yet, it was the upperclassmen that left Ulmer disappointed. With both Stone and Vander Weide making four errors each and with three players recording negative hitting percentages — Ulmer considered bringing in freshmen in an attempt to save the match.

“If I take a redshirt off of Karson [Bacon] or Chandlar [Duff], I’m going with them,” Ulmer said.

“If Kylie [Robinson] becomes our setter, then that’s our setter. We’re talking about seniors, so I think that’s probably the most disappointing part is that our seniors are kind of backing down.”

Despite the loss, one Duck remained smiling throughout the match — Oregon’s captain, 8-yearold Danielle Bixby.

Bixby, a Eugene-native, has been battling a rare form of cancer, Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis, for the past year. She completed her final round of chemo on Friday.

“Danielle and her family are fantastic, and we let them down today and that’s very frustrating,” Ulmer said. “But she doesn’t know that. She goes and gets hugs and kisses from all the team, and that’s what this is all about. … Ultimately, in college sports, this is the absolute best part about being a coach at Oregon or being a student-athlete at Oregon, it’s the chance to reach out to the community and get to make a difference in somebody’s life.”

Oregon will travel on its first Pac-12 road trip of the season to Los Angeles, where the Ducks will compete in two top-20 match ups against No. 18 UCLA on Friday and No. 13 USC on Sunday.

BY JACK BUTLER • TWITTER @BUTLER917 BERKELEY, Calif., — Late in the fourth quarter, with Oregon leading by 11, No. 24 California had an opportunity to make the game interesting. Oregon senior safety Ugochukwu Amadi had other plans.

He intercepted Cal quarterback Brandon McIlwain and returned it for a touchdown. So, on his way back to the sideline, he yelled “ballgame.”

“Had to,” Amadi said.

Cal’s comeback hopes were gone, and extended No. 19 Oregon’s lead to 42-24 as the Ducks (4-1, 1-1) held on for the road win. Amadi’s interception was all part of a game in which Oregon’s defense bent but didn’t break. ey forced turnovers when it mattered most that kept Cal from closing the gap on an early lead.

Of Cal’s five turnovers, the most important came late in the second quarter. e Golden Bears were driving with 31 seconds left in the first half, down 21-10. When McIlwain dropped back, Oregon defensive lineman Drayton Carlberg was on him. Carlberg hit him, jarring the ball loose. Linebacker La’Mar Winston Jr. grabbed the ball and returned it 61-yards for a touchdown.

“I’m going to have to take Drayton to dinner all next week,” Winston Jr. said.

Carlberg, who made arguably the play of the game, was playing for the injured Austin Faoliu.

“It’s just pride in yourself and working on your technique every week and trying to improve every week,” Carlberg said. “When your opportunity comes, try and make the best of it.”

It was one week ago Stanford had a scoop-and-score that shifted the momentum its way in the comeback victory. is time, Oregon used it to pull away and kill Cal’s momentum.

“You could feel the breath go out of the team,” Winston Jr. said. “ at’s what really changed momentum. It felt amazing, actually.”

Oregon’s defense wasn’t perfect. ey allowed Cal to drive, and at times Cal’s offensive line — coached by long time Duck O-line coach Steve Greatwood — pushed Oregon around. e Golden Bears rushed for 241 yards, the most the Ducks have allowed all season, and McIlwain went for 123 years.

“We hold ourselves to a very high expectation,” Winston Jr. said. “We want to be one of the best defenses in the country, and that just doesn’t happen for the best defenses in the country.”

Again, Oregon stopped the run when it counted. e Golden Bears were down 35-17 with three minutes, 18 seconds left in the third quarter. ey drove to the Oregon 1-yard line and went for the end zone on fourth down. Senior linebacker Troy Dye stuffed McIlwain’s run attempt short. e Ducks were able to go on the road and beat a ranked opponent a year after they failed to beat a Pac-12 opponent on the road.

“It feels good,” Amadi said. “We finally get the girl of our dreams. We get the win, get to smile now. ... For the years I’ve been year, this is probably one of the most fulfilling wins we’ve had on the road.”
