Claire Brown, a UO freshman and political science major, held a sign that read “Shatter e Silence” at ursday night’s Take Back e Night rally. She said she has a responsibility to uplift and honor the survivors of sexual violence.

“I march because the violence experienced by women in our communities is real,” Brown said. “We demand change. We should not have to be afraid of the dark anymore.”

It’s been 40 years since Take Back e Night first crowded the streets of Eugene, uniting students and community members to march for an end to sexual and domestic violence. e name of the annual rally represents the unsafe feeling many women have when walking the streets alone after dark. As the decades have passed, the faces of marchers have changed, but according to Itzel Chavez, sexual violence prevention and education coordinator at University of Oregon’s Women’s Center, the importance of the march has not.

Chavez chose this year’s theme to highlight indigenous and marginalized groups after analyzing “ e Round House,” a book which was provided to first-year students at UO. “It talks about how tribal nations don’t have the ability to prosecute perpetrators who are non-native and come onto reservations and commit these crimes against native women. ere’s a huge loophole in the legal system that allows these people to act without consequence,” Chavez said.

Chavez said the threats to underrepresented women are not being addressed and that this year’s rally is in response to the lack of support. “ is oppression continues and nobody talks about it. I want to amplify a voice that’s been purposefully silenced for centuries by the government,” Chavez said. “ is is what happens when you silence a group of people and make them vulnerable.” e rally began at 6 p.m. with volunteers passing out red bracelets as people began to fill up the area surrounding the amphitheater. Fatima Pervaiz, director of the Women’s Center and one of the event’s organizers, explained the significance of the color red in following this year’s theme. “ e color red commemorates missing and murdered indigenous women, of which there are over a thousand, and this is something that

we need to raise awareness about,” Pervaiz said. e podium came alive with a number of speakers representing different marginalized groups within the UO community. Pervaiz and Chavez had gone to great lengths to make sure the evening was an all-inclusive event that gave individuals of all walks-of-life an opportunity to march in solidarity for a unifying cause. “ at’s a huge part of what we do here,” Pervaiz said. “We validate people’s experiences and affirm that we believe them, we support them and that it was not their fault.”

Leah Cruz is a member of the UO Veteran and Family Student Association.

Cruz served as a medic in the United States Air Force from 2009 to 2014 before heading back to school to earn a degree in psychology. She fought back tears as she spoke to the crowd about the veteran experience within college upon returning from duty.

“Approximately 400 student veterans walk among us on campus at any one time. e veteran identity is vast and diverse, but we do share one common thread. We each care deeply about the state of the nation that we call America,” Cruz said. “My mission has been to increase the awareness and empower women who serve or have served in the military.”

Just after 7 p.m., hundreds of protesters filled the streets for a peaceful, police-escorted march into downtown Eugene. Passers-by joined the march as they made their way through the city, chanting and waving signs. e march came to an end at the Atrium building in downtown Eugene, which held the final event of the evening. Hosted by the Sexual Assault Support Services of Lane County, the Survivor Speak Out portion of the rally, according to Pervaiz, allowed people to share their personal stories and experiences involving sexual and domestic violences with a little more privacy than the public rally. “ ere’s no media coverage inside the event. It’s more intimate, whereas the rally and the march is more of a public forum,” Pervaiz said. “If things have surfaced while marching or at the rally, or if someone recognizes that their feelings are valid and that they did experience sexual or domestic violence, sometimes it’s healing or cathartic to say your story out loud.”

A NEWS ADMINISTRATION HAVING “EARLY TALKS” ABOUT THE FUTURE OF HAMILTON AND WALTON DORMS

e Student Services and Enrollment Management department is having preliminary talks about the future of Hamilton and Walton halls — and a complete demolition is not out of the question.

“I want to emphasize that these are very preliminary thoughts,” said Roger ompson, the vice president for Student Services and Enrollment Management. “We don’t have some drawing or plan for what we’re going to do in there, but we’re certainly thinking about what it might look like and what we might do differently.” ompson brought the proposal to a Campus Planning Committee meeting on April 17 and perceived the group’s reaction to be positive.

“We need a lot more discussion with the president and others, but the first place to start was with the Campus Planning Committee because they represent the faculty, students and staff,” he said.

Hamilton and Walton dorms, which currently house 753 and 558 students respectively, were constructed in the late 1950s and ‘60s. At the moment, ompson said there are no conversations around the future of other older dorms such as Carson. ompson said that the costs of repairing broken heating and cooling systems in the facilities may outweigh the cost of building new dorms.

Additionally, ompson said that the 2021 World Track and Field

Championships will put the world’s eyes on Eugene, and putting UO’s “best foot forward” plays a role in the conversation.

UO will host athletes on campus, but ompson said that housing athletes is “completely secondary to what we do for our own students.”

Conrad Nielsen, a freshman environmental sciences major and Hamilton resident, said that although he is not living in Hamilton next year, he empathizes with the people who will have to live through the construction.

Andrew Rossete, a freshman studying business administration, said that he enjoys living in Walton Hall and didn’t know that the building was almost five decades old.

“I really like living in Walton,” he said.

“I’ve made a lot of connections and the community is cool, but there’s a lot of noise during the night and that’s my only complaint. I don’t know if I’d like living in a new dorm because I feel like it may be too modern. I like Walton because you can’t tell how old it is.” ompson said that students would be involved in the conversation around the future of the facilities, adding that he has already received input from Student Services Advisory Board meetings.

“We’ve been doing our due diligence about what the project itself would look like, what are the things we would have to consider,” he said. “I’d like us to keep the process moving about what it could potentially become.”

COURSE EVALUATIONS

WILL LIKELY CHANGE SOON, HERE’S HOW AND WHY

BY CASEY CROWLEY • TWITTER @CASEYCROWLEY55 e University of Oregon is changing course evaluations to make them more useful and eliminate implicit bias. e changes, if approved, will remove the number-based rating systems that are in place and replace them with more specific questions that require written answers. “ ose scores have nothing to [do] with how much a student learns in a class and that’s really problematic because our intent as [a] university is to try to get better at teaching,” said Bill Harbaugh, Teaching Evaluation Task Force co-chairman and Senate vice president. e UO Faculty Senate has been working on making changes to course evaluations since last May, when the Senate formed a task force to improve them. ASUO Election Commissioner Ram Sharma says that he thinks UO should make more people aware of the possible changes before going through with them.

From May 1 to May 3, the university will hold a series of four town halls, each one focused on informing a specific part of the campus community. e town halls will also be used to gather feedback about the upcoming changes. e decision to improve evaluations came after Harbaugh discovered a study that showed trends of discrimination in college course evaluations.

“If this information is not telling us what is good teaching then we have to wonder why we are collecting it and fix the way we are collecting it,” said Harbaugh.

In winter term, UO began testing the new format of course evaluations in about 20 courses that were taught by faculty who have been involved in changing the course evaluation process. e format being tested incorporates some of the proposed changes and ask students to share three things that are going well in the class and three things that aren’t.

“It focuses them to think about

specific issues rather than general ‘did you like this class’ kind of questions,” said Harbaugh.

One additional change that will be made is a removal of the longer wait for grades for students who don’t fill out course evaluations. e task force is also looking to change when the evaluations are done and are planning to move the main evaluation to the middle of the term. In this case, the information from evaluations would be immediately available to the faculty member teaching the class.

In addition to students evaluating teachers, UO has teachers observe and review each other’s classes.

“It’s not very well organized, so different professors use different systems for doing that, and we suspect that those evaluations are not really any more accurate than the student evaluations,” said Harbaugh.

UO is also planning to improve the way these evaluations are done by creating specific questions about the teacher’s performance during the class.

“I think most faculty are enthusiastic about the idea of replacing numerical scores,” said Harbaugh.

Harbaugh said that many of the students the task force has talked to don’t understand the purpose of course evaluations. Sharma says that course evaluations are important to students because it gives them a chance to be open about the quality of teaching that classes and teachers offer. e Senate plans to vote on a resolution to make the changes official sometime before the end of spring term and have the changes take effect for the entire university beginning in fall term of next school year.

Harbaugh says that he is concerned about low response rate if the new changes go through because one student providing useful feedback can help improve teaching.

ASUO PRESIDENT AMY SCHENK FEELS “RELIEVED” AFTER DUCKS TOGETHER WIN

BY RYAN NGUYEN • TWITTER @RYANJJNGUYEN After Ducks Together won this year’s ASUO election by a landslide, some members of this year’s administration said leaving their roles will be bittersweet.

ASUO President Amy Schenk said that though she enjoyed her time in ASUO, she would refrain from retaking the job for “twenty years.”

Schenk said she’s both excited and relieved that members of Ducks Together won and said she was “overwhelmed” while trying to give all her thoughts to ASUO President-elect Maria Alejandra Gallegos-Chacon after Ducks Together’s win.

“I’m excited for her to start her year and continue the progress that my team has specifically worked on throughout this year,” Schenk added.

Schenk wants to make Ducks Together’s transition as personal as it was between her and 2015-16 ASUO President Quinn Haga when Schenk was elected. For Schenk, that means having one-on-one conversations with the Ducks Together slate about the takeaways that she has from this year.

“One thing I’ve learned this year is to not be surprised,” said Schenk, adding that there will always be something that comes up and surprises Gallegos. “Don’t let it show and just realize that you can and will — if you’re holding your value strong — do whatever you want to achieve this year.”

ASUO External Vice President Vickie Gimm also said that she felt bittersweet leaving her role. She added that she is “exactly the same” as before she took on the role, but now she feels “a lot more tired.”

“One of my regrets is probably not being stern enough,” Gimm said. “I feel like I’ve been pretty bitchy, but I also feel like now — knowing where I’m at — there’s a lot of stuff you can get away with, and there are some things that people just really need to hear. I almost wish that I was even tougher on the people that I challenge.”

Gallegos and the rest of the newly elected ASUO members will take office on May 23, when all outgoing ASUO officers will have a celebration for their service.

New members will have their first day of office on May 25.

Schenk endorsed Ducks Together on her personal Facebook profile the day before election polls closed, writing that she knew that “they have the best interests of all students at heart.”

Ducks Together and UO For You, the campaign that Schenk and the rest of the current presidential slate ran on last year, share platform points, particularly those relating to tuition advocacy and the student food pantry.

A major value of UO For You was its commitment to including students in the tuition and fee process by publicizing the meetings of the Tuition and Fee Advisory Board, as reported by the Emerald.

UO For You also wanted to relocate the 19th Avenue food pantry onto campus, a goal that student organizations such as the Radical Organizing and Activism Resource (R.O.A.R.) Center have been working toward for years, according to Schenk. Oregon State University, Southern is year, Ducks Together pushed for the affordability of UO tuition and fees and the secure funding for the food pantry and other student services while at the ASUO Town Hall Debate in early April. Gallegos said these services need to be accessible. e campaign advertised itself as “the representation this campus needs” as a diverse group of “qualified student leaders … union leaders, center directors, community artists and organizers,” according to the Ducks Together Facebook page. Schenk said her own administration has made many efforts to open the door for the ASUO-hopefuls who are part of groups not traditionally represented in ASUO, such as nontraditional students, students of color and LGBTQ students.

Schenk said she thinks Ducks Together will do “an amazing job, because they themselves are part of those communities that had been historically squashed down.”

“I’m hoping that if this continues,” Schenk said, “it’s going to be a lot of students who have this underlying value of wanting to do good on our campus to be in ASUO.” ASUO Internal Vice President Tess Mor was unavailable for comment.

If you are an honors-bound student majoring in business, general social sciences, romance languages or chemistry, your requirement for departmental honors just got harder. e University of Oregon has updated its requirements for awarding honors to eliminate solely GPA-based departmental honors at the university and now requires a research thesis alongside a strong GPA. After an extensive review of honors awards at the university, the Honors Task Force presented a report to the University Senate that catalyzed changes to come in departmental and Latin honors at UO. e university will eliminate all departmental honors that are based solely on GPA and will standardize Latin honors to be equal across all terms.

Also, the registrar’s website will host a main document defining what honors are and how each major can achieve them to be clearer for students. ese changes will not affect seniors graduating this spring.

According to Frances White, professor of anthropology and co-chair of the Academic Council, these changes are aimed to make achieving honors fair across the board at the university.

“You’re basically giving honors to a group of students that haven’t done a thesis – haven’t done all the extra work and research that a thesis-based route student would have,” White said. “ ey could have the same GPA, but one of them has done way more to get honors than the other has.”

Departmental honors are awarded within a department of study, such as the Lundquist Business School or the College of Arts and Sciences.

According to the report from the Honors Task Force, among the 37 majors that offer departmental honors, eight of them have GPA requirements only. e Senate also passed changes to Latin honors at the university to make them more

equal across all terms. In the past, Latin honors were awarded to the top 10 percent, 5 percent and 3 percent of the graduating class each term. is led to inconsistencies between students graduating in different terms. According to Julia Pomerenk, assistant vice president for enrollment management and university registrar, over the course of a five-year period, the average GPA for receiving Latin honors was lower in the summer than it was in other terms.

“Depending on the GPA of the students who are graduating at the same time you are, that might vary. It does vary,” Pomerenk said. is means if you had a GPA of 3.63 when you graduated, you would have received Latin honors if you graduated in the summer quarter but would have not received them if you graduated in the spring quarter.

“If they graduated in the fall, they might get honors, but if they graduated in the spring, they wouldn’t have got it for the same record. So that’s obviously inequitable,” White said. e university registrar is working on a solution to make earning honors equal across the entire year so that the GPA requirement does not change within the academic year. e Honors Task Force was convened by former Provost Scott Coltrane last year to analyze the state of honors at the university, according to White. e task force presented a report to the Senate last June that called on the academic council to propose changes to the Senate. e Academic Council presented these changes to the Senate based off of the Honors Task Force report, which the Senate later passed on April 11.

Changes to the Clark Honors College were also proposed; however, the CHC is restructuring itself and will address these changes in their remodel, according to White.

“It’s unfair between the students. e goal is to make honors fair,” White said.

IN TRACKTOWN USA, RUNNING IS MORE THAN JUST A SPORT

University of Oregon sports business instructor Josh Gordon hasn’t missed a single day of running in six years. at’s 2,216 consecutive days. Rain, shine, sleet or snow — Gordon averages 11.1 miles per day, and doesn’t let up.

“I don’t even know how to drive around Eugene half the time, but I can get anywhere by running,” said Gordon.

Over the weekend, 2,480 athletes competed in the Eugene Marathon races. Gordon, 43, ran the half marathon (13.1 miles), and finished toward the front of the pack with a time of 1:15:15. He was 18th overall, and 1st among the Masters runners, an age group for athletes over 40.

during his 15 years in Boston, after he graduated from the University of Massachusetts. While a part of the strong postcollegiate running community, he worked for John Hancock, a title sponsor for the Boston Marathon, which he ran 10 times. He also started competing with the Boston Athletic Association, which is where he met his wife, Renee Gordon.

When he moved to Eugene in 2010, Gordon missed the running community that Boston had offered. Tracktown USA is famous for supporting olympians and the UO track team, yet it is lacking a platform for older runners to train hard and experience the thrill of racing in a high-intensity environment, according to Gordon.

“Eugene does some things really well. ey encourage people to just get out and jog,” he said. “ e gap that they have is around postcollegiate competitors.”

Because of the lack of organization for runners in the city, Gordon created a group on Facebook where people of all ages can coordinate times to workout together. He is known as a connector, someone committed to bringing people together around a common love for the sport.

UO Running Club coach Tom Heinonen tries to do his part to foster the running community as well. He knows each active UO Running Club member by name, and addresses them by such every day he sees them.

“We try to be a lot of things to a lot of

people,” said Heinonen. “But most importantly: a place to come where you’re welcome, and there’s always going to be runners to spend time with.”

Gordon almost never runs alone. With a wife and 5-month-old daughter, finding social time is tough; it isn’t often his schedule has room for beer with the guys.

Instead, they join him for a run.

According to Gordon, that is where his friendships are maintained.

“You see an entire life cycle of someone,” said Gordon.”You get to experience it through these incremental conversations that are running.”

Some of his closest friends come from the Bowerman Track Club. He races with the group to stay serious and competitive in the post-collegiate runners’ world. ere are seven men that make up the core group of the club’s Masters team.

With some of these members, Gordon said he’s logged 10,000 miles. And with each step, the men talk, joke and encourage each other. “It’s not easy as you get older to find that depth of relationships,” said Gordon. “ at’s the whole reason I really run,” said Bowerman Masters runner Matt Farley. “I do love to compete and do all of that, but what carries you — keeps you going in the long run — is these people and the relationships.”

Before he started running on the Bowerman Masters team, Orin Schumacher only knew Gordon as the guy who always beat him. He refers to the group as “old guys”’ and says running is their mental therapy.

“It’s the last bit of glory we’ve got I guess,” said Schumacher.

Every year, over the course of a threeday-weekend, Farley hosts a running camp for Masters runners. e usual attendees include the Bowerman crew, as well as some runners from Portland’s Red Lizard Running Club. After long, spartan-style runs on the Pacific Crest Trail, the men hunker down in a cabin near Mt. Rainier to battle it out in a series of competitions — spear throwing, beer chugging, poker playing and bow and arrow aiming.

After all the events, they crown a Man of the Mountain.

Gordon often loses — he thinks it’s rigged. e Bowerman group is split between Eugene and Portland. Despite the distance, they usually meet all together on Sunday mornings for a long run, and try to make room for the occasional Tuesday night group workout. According to Farley, there is absolute commitment among every team member — year-round at a highintensity level.

Gordon says the Bowerman runners are a unique group because other teams show up to races with different athletes every year, yet he and his crew have been the same runners showing up season after season. ey have won three U.S. Cross Country National Championships in the last five years. In 2017 they placed third — they’re training now to regain the title. “ e funny thing is, if you look at our top five runners, we all train very differently.

But we all end up almost around the exact same place,” said Gordon.

Schumacher said the difference between Eugene and other running communities is twofold: Eugene people know running, and runners are everywhere.

“In Eugene it’s an expectation to see people on the street running,” he said. “I love that about this community. Everyone expects to see runners. ey know you as a runner — it’s part of your identity.”

Gordon and his wife Renee spend time training with the UO Running Club, where they try to mentor and encourage students to keep running after college. Club member Ryan Jones said he researched Eugene’s running community before moving here.

“If I was that old, I would want to be where Josh is. at would be a cool place to be,” he said.

Aside from his ability to bring people together, Gordon is regarded as ruthlessly competitive. Farley said he’s only beaten him a couple times, “But it’s taken every ounce of my soul to do that, and it’s been rare,” he said. “[Gordon] won’t give you even a centimeter of leeway.”

Gordon ran the Eugene half-marathon in 2010, 2011 and 2012 with times of 1:12:27, 1:13:48 and 1:16:19. His fastest mile is 4:16 and he’s even gotten close to running a sub-15-minute 5k. He is competitive, but he said he enjoys the whole process it takes to win a race — training included.

“To me, the training is the cake, and the race is the icing,” Gordon said.

Gordon’s friends are clear about his exceptional sportsmanship. “He does want to fight you and fiercely battle you. But in talking to you before and after the race, he is nothing but encouraging,” said Farley.

Former Bowerman runner Everett Whiteside agreed. “He is one of those guys that is instantly likeable,” he said. “And for all of his accomplishments, and for the status of who he is in his life — he is the most down-to-earth, approachable guy there is.”

Gordon continually chooses to run — he said the habits and principles are cooked into his life.

While he was still living in Massachusetts, Gordon said one time he took his lunch break and ran along the Charles River, through a blizzard. His face was swollen with welts from the ice hitting him, and he had to lean over or hold onto his hat just so he could survive. Still, he’d rather run in those conditions than not run at all — he craves adventure.

“For me, my value system in life; it’s not about things, or status — it’s about experience, and being really alive,” said Gordon.

Running binds Gordon and his friends together. Some of the guys he runs with don’t even care for the sport anymore.

In fact, Gordon said he is sure one of his friends hates it. But, if they don’t run, they don’t get to spend as much time with each other. So, they keep running. e running community in Eugene is a small world, according to Renee Gordon.

Competitors see the same faces at races every season. “ at’s the great thing about running — we compete against each other, but we’re happy when the other person wins,” said Schumacher. “Well, ten minutes later we are.”

THE FALSE NARRATIVE OF THE CONSERVATIVE MINORITY

e narrative of the minority conservative has plagued the news lately. A recent article published by e Hill claims that reality TV star Roseanne Barr is bringing conservative women “out of the closet,” a phrase reserved for queer or trans people. Conservatives are considered “minorities” on many U.S. college campuses. But these stories have a misconstrued understanding of what a minority is and inappropriately use language associated with marginalized communities.

According to Merriam-Webster, the word minority has three definitions: being underage, the smaller of two groups which constitute a whole and “a part of a population differing from others in some characteristics and often subjected to differential treatment.”

While it would be technically accurate to say that conservatives are a minority on, for example, the University of Oregon campus, this narrative is often accompanied with words like “discrimination” and “oppression.”

What these people really mean to imply is that they are marginalized.

By referring to themselves as minorities and taking the language reserved for marginalized

communities, conservatives are drawing attention away from communities that actually experience discrimination, or prejudiced treatment, and oppression, or “unjust or cruel exercise of authority or power.” ese words and connotations bring to light the hardships that marginalized communities actually face and highlight the power dynamics involved. We face institutionalized discrimination at the hands of those in power, whether it comes to the pay gap, higher rates of incarceration or the right to marry (which was ruled on only three years ago). I have yet to hear any statistics about conservatives being faced with increased rates of police brutality or being tried and sentenced as adults in court despite being 16 years old.

As a conservative, you may be among the few rather than the many in some areas, such as college campuses; however, the Republican party currently has control of all three branches of government. Conservatives do not suffer at the hands of the government, because the government is on their side.

Most people do not like to be yelled at. But having slurs hurled at you because of the color

of your skin or your sexuality — things you cannot change — is very different than being yelled at because you proudly align with a party or a candidate that has blatantly racist, sexist and elitist policies, to name a few issues. is is not to say that I believe all Republicans are the same or everyone who voted for Trump is a soulless heathen. But using selfvictimization to paint yourselves as brave leaders is not an appealing narrative for a group that will most likely never experience marginalization. e only people who are going to buy that narrative are other conservatives, and that does nothing for the group as a whole.

Actual minorities are beaten to death for being gay or because a white girl made up a story that you wolf-whistled at her. is narrative does not apply to conservatives, and I urge them to abandon it, as well as the connotative language that goes along with it. It’s never enjoyable to be yelled at for your political views, but if that qualified as discrimination, everyone could consider themselves discriminated against at one point or another. e consequences for minorities are much more severe than being yelled at.

WHY YOU SHOULDN’T MOVE TO OREGON

FOR POLITICAL REASONS

Over the past few years, I’ve heard several students talk highly about their decision to come to the University of Oregon. Many take advantage of the lower cost of living while others receive scholarships and come for a change of scenery. Sadly, I’ve also heard of students who just couldn’t handle the red state they grew up in and were so happy to be in a “blue” state. e only problem is that Oregon isn’t as blue as the media make it seem.

Most counties are red During the 2016 presidential election, Hillary Clinton only won eight out of 36 counties in Oregon. Sure, that’s where the populace was. But we need to take into consideration that democrats don’t make up even half of the registered voters in the state.

According to the Secretary of State, about 36 percent of all registered voters in Oregon are registered as democrats. e second largest voting population came up as non-affiliated, just under 31 percent of registered voters.

Republicans make up a little under 21 percent of Oregon’s registered voters. While some may see this as a confirmation of the state’s left-leaning tendencies, there’s much more to the story than meets the eye.

Taking a look at the 2016 presidential election map for Oregon shows just how scattered republican voters are. Perhaps the most profound part of this map is how Oregon is viewed as a liberal utopia, but only one out of 36 counties is actually solid blue — Multnomah County. 10 percent of Oregon’s voters are registered democrats and are registered to vote in Multnomah County.

Oregon’s underfunded education Last year, Oregon ranked 48th in the nation for high school graduation rates. Since 1990,

Oregon has seen a dramatic divestment from public school funding. is is partially thanks to Measure 5, which put a constitutional limit on property taxes for the state and dedicated them to education and nonschool government operations. Interestingly enough, public education funding was transferred from local to state responsibility. e idea was to help the rural parts of Oregon — namely Eastern Oregon — get more funding to provide a better education to the state as a whole. At the time, it was a great idea, and it worked for some parts of Oregon.

Public college and university funding are also state responsibilities. Since Measure 5 was passed, the University of Oregon has seemingly received less state funding. On top of this, Oregon lawmakers haven’t been very successful in attempts to reform PERS, the public retirement system.

Even current Governor, Kate Brown, didn’t follow the will of the voters, who overwhelmingly passed Measure 98 in 2016 with 66 percent of the vote. Governor Brown’s budget for the 2017–2019 biennium underfunded Measure 98, which allotted more Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes and funding for dropout prevention for high schools. is move is surprising, considering that most Oregon democrats would expect such behavior from a republican governor.

Oregon’s interesting priorities Democrats usually tout how they fight for the little guy and want to tax the rich so they can help those in need. In Oregon, the same is said but not exactly demonstrated.

Not only is education underfunded in order to pay for OHP, Oregon’s government has a history of taxing everyone and letting the rich and wealthy get away with lower business taxes.

Just take a look at Measure 101 from this past January. We voted on whether we wanted to have our health insurance taxed in order to pay for OHP. Of course, voters who didn’t read the text of the bill were told that they were voting on a tax that would affect big corporations in the insurance industry — a lie by omission that wound up passing the voters.

Another way Oregon’s elected officials swayed voters was through emotional manipulation, scaring the voters into approving Measure 101 in fear of closing down the state mental hospital and 350,000 Oregonians losing healthcare, neither of which were actually valid.

Governor Brown signed a bill that would tax small businesses at a higher rate and called a special session to extend a business tax break. is matters because Oregon’s businesses wouldn’t get to enjoy the federal tax breaks signed by President Trump. In addition, the special session is an offering of a tax break to sole proprietorships — a type of business that is usually run and owned by one person. is means that any other small businesses will not get to enjoy a tax break that may allow them to reinvest into their business, allowing for local economies to benefit as well.

People should be aware of what they’re moving into and what they may or may not be voting to keep in place. Oregon has a lot of stubborn voters that won’t vote for anyone without a ‘D’ next to their name, so people believe that the state won’t be turning red anytime soon. Historically, Oregon has only been blue for between 40 and 50 years. It’s time to give someone else a chance.

If you need to register to vote, change your party or update, you can do so online, by mail and in the DMV. e last day to do this is April 29 before the 2018 Oregon Primary Election.

9 OPINION THE STARBUCKS SCANDAL IS BREAKING THE SILENCE ABOUT RACIAL DISCRIMINATION

BY EMMA SPAETH In early April, two Black men were arrested in a Philadelphia Starbucks, allegedly on suspicion that they were trespassing, when they were actually just waiting on a friend. e arrests led to the takeover of a Starbucks store in Philadelphia and outrage.

Since the incident and the protests, Starbucks has announced that they will be closing more than 8,000 stores on May 29 for an employee racial-tolerance training. e incident has put Starbucks — a company that prides itself on diversity and inclusion — on blast.

People are upset because this is not a singular incident and because the decision to call the police seems to be rooted in discrimination. e video of the incident was viewed over 8 million times and prompted responses from both Philadelphia’s mayor and the city’s police commissioner. e arrests in Philadelphia have also resurfaced talk about an incident four years ago when a man sleeping in a nearby park was shot to death after Starbucks called the police on him.

“I’m happy it didn’t turn out the same way,” Nate Hamilton, the brother of the victim, told Reuters.

“Starbucks, they talk a good game.

Is it going to be put into action?” he said of the CEO’s plans. Hamilton brings up a valid point: Starbucks has a history of racism and discrimination, and so far nothing has changed. Can we trust that

Starbucks will put its money where its mouth is and prevent another incident from happening? e men were released without charges and have recently broken the silence and spoken out about their experience. In an interview with the Associated Press, Rashon Nelson, one of the men arrested, said he wondered if he would make it home alive.

“Anytime I’m encountered by cops, I can honestly say it’s a thought that runs through my mind,” he said. “You never know what’s going to happen.” e conversation continued in an interview on Good Morning America. e two men are hoping that this incident will incite more awareness about this issue and spur a dialogue about race and discrimination. is is not simply an issue with Starbucks. Right now, they are center stage, and the world is watching to see how they will move forward, but this is a widespread issue and companies everywhere could benefit from racial bias trainings.

People need to speak up and let companies know that this sort of behavior is unacceptable. By tolerating discrimination, we are perpetuating it. e Starbucks in Eugene on 13th Street will be closing for the training. ey are supportive of it because they do not want another incident like this to happen again.

SOFTBALL BEATS WASHINGTON 5-3 TO COMPLETE SERIES SWEEP

Oregon catcher Ray Soderman had gone 19 at bats without a hit. But on Sunday, in the bottom of the tenth, he broke out of that slump with a clutch, one-out opposite field walk-off double to score Daniel Patzlaff and lead the Ducks to a 2-1 win over USC to win the series.

After the game, Soderman immediately credited Patzlaff for getting on base and Taylor Travess bunting him over but was interrupted during his interview by multiple Gatorade baths and shaving cream pies. “ at pitcher was throwing all fastballs,” Soderman said as he wiped shaving cream from his face. “Basically I swung and found some green, barely, and it worked I guess.” ere was some debate on whether to pinch-hit for the eventual hero, but head coach George Horton trusted Soderman would be able to get the job done. “ ere’s nobody who works harder on the team than Ray,” Horton said. “I am kind of corny when it comes to that. I think the game rewards guys that work hard and he works hard.”

Starting pitcher Kolby Somers pitched well in an attempt to get his first win since his first career start against UC Davis on March 10. e lefty used the confidence of having the lead for the first time since the UC Davis win to go a career-high 6.1 innings without giving up a run.

“It’s always nice to get runs on the board,” Somers said. “It gives you more confidence going out there. … I couldn’t care less what our offense is doing honestly.”

Somers only allowed two hits and struck out four before giving way to Parker Kelly during the seventh inning. Kelly dominated

Heading into Washington, the Ducks softball team aimed to make a statement. ey accomplished that with a pair of wins on Friday and Saturday.

On Sunday, Oregon provided an exclamation point.

In the final game of a weekend series between two of the top five teams in the NCAA, No. 2 Oregon (41-7, 15-3 Pac-12) came away with a 5-3 win over No. 4 Washington to complete a sweep of the Huskies in Seattle.

Washington (41-8, 12-8 Pac-12) manufactured a run off of the Ducks’ Megan Kleist in the bottom of the second inning to jump out to the 1-0 lead.

For the third straight game, Washington held an early lead over Oregon. But just as they had done in the first two contests, the Ducks rallied from behind, and on Sunday, they

“When you have an electric arm like that, you’d second guess yourself not going to Nelson,” Horton said. “At least Nelly made them earn it. It could have been worse.

He got the Trojans down to their final out, but two straight singles tied the game at one. e Trojans then loaded the bases, but Nelson was able to escape further damage. e Ducks led early, executing their small-ball approach to perfection. After a Jakob Goldfarb lead-off single in the first, Johnny DeLuca came to the plate looking to get him over. e center fielder had a perfect bunt toward first base that was able to pull USC first baseman Dillon Paulson far enough off the bag where he was able to beat second baseman Ben Ramirez to the bag.

“We’re not swinging the bats great,” Horton said. “We do pride ourselves on executing. When you get leadoff hitters on and you can execute a bunt like DeLuca. … at ended up being the reason we got one run.”

After a Kyle Kasser strikeout, Goldfarb and DeLuca both stole in order to get into scoring position for Spencer Steer. Steer was able to get the job done with a sac-fly to right, which gave the Ducks the 1-0 lead.

Oregon will try and use this win as momentum toward a late-season push. e Ducks play No. 7 Oregon State this Tuesday as they look to get their first win over the in-state rival since May of 2016.

In Seattle, the long ball came at the right time for Sanders, whose grand slam in the top of the ninth inning on Friday lifted the Ducks to its series-opening win.

Kleist allowed three runs in six-plus innings and earned the win to improve to 17-5 on the season. e Ducks welcome Utah to Eugene on Friday for their final regular season homestand.

FROM UNDERDOG TO TOP DOG

BY MAVERICK PALLACK • TWITTER @MAVPALLACK Senior Alyssa Tobita of the Oregon women’s tennis team has used an underdog persona to piece together one of the best careers in program history.

Tobita is from Mililani, Hawaii, which came with some disadvantages during the recruitment and development process. Being outside the continental United States, it was harder for her to compete against schools in other states.

“Alyssa’s kinda always been one that’s enjoyed the underdog story,” head coach Alison Silverio said.

“She’s been an underdog in many ways. Since she’s been here, she’s been a topdog.”

Tobita is currently ranked No. 43 in singles and is part of two different top-125 doubles pairings.

She is ranked No. 34 with her old partner, Shweta Sangwan and is ranked No. 88 with her current partner, Rifanty Kahfiani.

Her name also fills the record books. She is third all-time in wins with 77, and is half of the second and third winningest doubles-pairs with Sangwan and another former partner, Nia Rose.

Tobita has won at least 18 matches every season, with her sophomore season being the winningest with 21. e senior saved her best season for last, going 18-10, with six of those wins

against nationally ranked opponents.

Although she struggled mid-season, she really turned it on in crunch time. Tobita won her last five matches to close out the regular season – three against top-125 opponents.

“Since she came here her freshman year, she’s bought into what we’re about and what our culture is,” Silverio said. “ is year has been no different.

She is one of our most reliable players. She is one of our most consistent players. All the credit to her for the work and the preparation that she puts into every match.”

Before Tobita and Silverio arrived at Oregon, the program struggled to win matches. After a 7-15 finish in the 2014 season, Oregon needed an infusion of fresh talent and new leadership. ey got both of those in new-recruit Tobita and the hiring of Silverio.

“I came into the program with coach Alison,” Tobita said. “Before that, we were bottom of the Pac-12 and didn’t know what to expect.

Now to be here and play at this high of a level, it’s kinda unreal.”

Tobita was already signed before Silverio was hired, but that doesn’t mean the first-time head

coach was unaware of the talent she was inheriting.

“She was a top-level recruit,” Silverio said. “I couldn’t wait to work with her. It’s no surprise to me, any of our staff or her teammates that she’s having the success she is.” is year, the No. 30 Oregon women’s tennis team is finishing its best season ever. e team is 15-9 and awaiting its seeding in the NCAA tournament. Although the Ducks made an appearance last year for the first time in 10 seasons, postseason dreams are still a new and exciting prospect for the up-and-coming program.

Earlier this season, the Ducks were ranked as high as No. 17 in the nation, the highest in program history, and Tobita is one of the main reasons. Tobita has won her match in 12 of the Oregon wins this season. rough her adaptability, leadership and versatile playing style, Tobita has formed many great relationships on the team.

“She’s great,” Kahfiani said. “I love her.”

Oregon’s topdog is projected to be playing a lot more matches for the Ducks. Besides the NCAA team tournament, Tobita could get an invite for both the singles and the doubles tournament.

OREGON BOUNCED BY UCLA IN SEMIFINALS OF PAC-12 TOURNAMENT

Friday’s match between Oregon men’s tennis and No. 2 UCLA looked at first like it was setting up to be a classic, but the Bruins eventually pulled away with a 4-0 win to advance to the championship match and send the Ducks home.

With no more regular season matches to be played, Oregon (17-9, 4-4 Pac-12) now awaits its fate in the NCAA Tournament. e field will be announced Tuesday.

On Friday, though, all focus was on UCLA (25-2, 8-0) after the big-time 4-2 win over Cal in the first round of the tournament on ursday.

With four singles players for the Bruins ranked nationally, the Ducks’ clearest path to an upset involved winning the doubles point. omas Laurent and Cormac Clissold fell 6-3 to Martin Redlicki and

Evan Zhu before the Ducks’ Armando Soemarno and Charles Roberts evened it back up with a 6-4 win of their own.

It came down to the No. 2 pairing of Simon Stevens and Ty Gentry, who have put together quite the 2018 season. e pair kept it close, but fell 7-6, which clinched the doubles point for UCLA. e Bruins then rolled in singles.

Laurent more than held his own against Redlicki, the No. 1 player in the country. e Oregon junior won the first set 6-4 and was trailing 3-2 in the second set. But his match, along with Stevens’ and Gentry’s, was abandoned.

Akihiro Tanaka, Riki Oshima and Clissold weren’t able to gather any momentum in their respective matches, losing in straight matches to clinch the 4-0 sweep for the Bruins and sending the Ducks home.

REVIEW: ‘AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR’ PRETENDS TO CHANGE THE SUPERHERO FORMULA

BY DANA ALSTON • TWITTER @ALSTONDALSTON Comic book fans will love “Avengers: Infinity War.” at’s worth mentioning immediately, because the film is essentially a six-issue story distilled down to 156 minutes. ere are huge set pieces, funny moments and character interactions that will make audiences giddy. It’s a lot to juggle at once, and dizzying for a Marvel agnostic. At least eight of the previous Marvel movies are essential studying material.

If you’re a longtime fan, this magnum opus of a blockbuster — directed by the Russo Brothers — will have plenty to offer. On its own, though, the movie makes very little sense.

Maybe that’s unfair. “Infinity War,” which throws together the Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy together to fight a war in deep space, was never meant to be watched in a vacuum. It’s not really a movie at all; more of a very long, very expensive attempt at satisfying every wallet-owning moviegoer on the planet. Past entries in the universe have been entertaining on their own. Logic suggests that throwing them all together should obliterate the fun quotient, right?

Sort of. e stakes are certainly high. anos (Josh Brolin) finally steps out of his mid-credit purgatory to collect six Infinity Stones, which will allow him to eliminate half of all living things in the universe with a snap of his fingers.

e opening scene sets the stage with a pair of important character deaths: this guy is not messing around. “No resurrections this time,” he says with a smirk, and for once, a Marvel villain sounds genuinely threatening.

“Infinity War” splits its time between Earth and space, and the action is appropriately otherworldly. e climax of “Captain America: Civil War” sent a dozen superheroes to fight out their differences in open combat. In contrast, anos casually disintegrates a planet’s crust by clenching his fist. Disney can rest assured that their budget — which estimates place around $400 million — was put to adequate use, even if the muted color palette saps some visual grandeur out of the universe. e last MCU film was “Black Panther,” a rousing flick that infused a normally tired structure (the superhero origin story) with relevance and originality. “Infinity War” borrows that film’s setting and hero, T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman), for a climactic battle sequence. But it leaves behind its pathos and visual beauty, and therein lies the problem. “Infinity War” swallows the stars and settings of the MCU and positions them (with great care) as minor players in an opera-sized conflict. In the process, it strips them of what made them interesting.

Pacing is a consistent problem as well. Very little occurs in the movie’s first hour that feels consequential. Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) meets Dr. Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and the Guardians run into or (Chris Hemsworth), but these encounters only serve to rearrange these characters into their appropriate spaces for upcoming plot points. Screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely offer enough sharp dialogue to keep things moving but can’t save the first half from abundant exposition. It’s hard to escape the feeling that we’ve seen this before.

Such is the feeling that has plagued the MCU since the original “Avengers.” “Infinity War” just barely manages to escape it, and only in the final minutes. e ending — which rocks the boat enough to warrant an untitled part 2 next May — is a genuine shock. It’s a shame that it wears off fast, given a look at the slate of Marvel movies already planned for the next few years.

For a brief moment, “Infinity War” challenges convention and takes some big swings. But in the context of Disney’s plans for the Marvel brand, those swings seem amazingly hollow. Big changes are really just disguised resets for the formula. at’s not to say the movie won’t satisfy fans deep into their fandom. Plenty of people will have fun; the fun is just empty.

REVIEW: DIP IT PROVIDES STUDENTS WITH CUSTOMIZABLE FROZEN TREATS

And what better way to enjoy the springtime heat than with a refreshing ice cream treat. While Prince Pucklers is the established location when it comes to off-campus ice cream, a new option has emerged for students craving their frozen fix on campus.

Dip It, a pop-up ice cream and dessert shop, opened for business in the EMU on April 10, 2018. Occupying the space previously filled

by Red Wagon Creamery, Dip It takes a more customizable, niche approach to desert snacks.

Customers can begin their order with a vanilla ice cream bar, an ice cream sandwich (flavors: chocolate, birthday cake or strawberry), a frozen banana or a rice krispy-style bar. Once dipped in chocolate, an array of toppings are available: various styles of sprinkles, almonds, toffee bits, chocolate chips and more. e Emerald investigated whether Dip It has the legs to become a go-to campus staple.

Each item is presented in a cleverly designed tray and each tray has a notch taken out of its side to allow the stick protruding from the treat to rest flat. is allows the chocolate dip to dry and harden without dripping down the side of the bar or sandwich. is subtle but ingenious detail also allows for any additional toppings to set within the chocolate membrane of the bar or sandwich.

Expect Dip It items draped with colorful sprinkles to pop up on Instagram stories soon.

Taste Ice cream taste can be difficult to evaluate as ice cream is made and served in different ways. For instance, eating soft serve ice cream from Dairy Queen is inherently a different experience than having a cone from Prince Pucklers.

Dip It’s ice cream is decent, but certainly nothing to write home about. e vanilla bar is, well, vanilla. It complements the chocolate dip, but ultimately the dip is not enough to distract from the flat, neutral flavor. e ice cream sandwich is much more

appetizing — the custom toasted almond topping deserves some credit. Nuts and ice cream is often a lazy, forced pairing. But in this case, the smoky, earthy flavor of almonds works excellent with the chocolate dip and sandwich texture.

Price An ice cream sandwich of any flavor costs $4.50, a vanilla bar costs $3.50, a frozen banana costs $2.50 and a krispy bar costs $2.

Adding a chocolate dip plus one additional topping is free, two additional toppings is 50 cents, three additional toppings is 75 cents.

Dip It is not a value play, as the portion sizes are moderate. But for the convenience of location and rapid service, the price range is fair.

Ultimately, patrons should approach Dip It with an open mind and low expectations. It won’t change your life, but if might take that 80 degree spring term Friday from good to great.

Located on the basement floor of the EMU, Dip It is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
