BUTLER, @BUTLER917 Former Oregon forward Jordan Bell will be a Golden State Warrior while teammate and guard Tyler Dorsey was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks. Dillon Brooks was the final Duck taken in the second round of the NBA draft Thursday night, selected by the Memphis Grizzlies.

Bell was the first Duck off the board when the Chicago Bulls drafted him with the 38th overall pick. The Bulls then traded him to the Warriors for $3.5 million, according to mercurynews.com.

Bell helped lead Oregon to the Final Four and became a national phenomenon with his athletic ability to block shots. He ended his three-year career with an average of 2.2 blocks per game. Entering the season, Bell was projected to be undrafted, but his impressive junior season and NCAA

Tournament shot him into draft boards.

Many draft experts projected him to go in the late first round.

Instead, he went eight picks later with the Warriors paying into the draft for his rights.

Dorsey joined him in the NBA moments later when the Hawks drafted him with the 41 overall pick.

Like Bell, Dorsey made a name for himself with his performance in the NCAA Tournament. He earned the nickname “Mr. March” after clutch performances in the Tournament, which included a gamewinning 3-pointer to beat Rhode Island in the second round. He scored less than 20 points just once in the month of March.

The 2016-17 Pac-12 Player of the Year Dillon Brooks was taken with the 45th

overall pick by the Houston Rockets, but was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies.

Brooks was Oregon’s leading scorer at 16.1 points per game. His 48 percent shooting from the field made him one of the best scorers in the Pac-12. He missed the start of the season with a foot injury, but his performance throughout the year quelled any injury concerns.

Another Duck joined the Warriors after the draft ended. Chris Boucher went undrafted but signed a two-way contract immediately following the draft. A two-way contract means he can freely move from the Warriors to their G-League team in Santa Cruz, California.

Boucher was a projected second round pick until he tore his ACL late last season.

Going into spring practice, Oregon had four quarterbacks on its roster: redshirt sophomore Travis Jonsen, redshirt freshman Terry Wilson, true freshman Braxton Burmeister, and sophomore returning starter Justin Herbert.

Three months later, the Ducks are down to just two, after Wilson and Jonsen both transferred this spring when it became apparent they’d be playing behind Herbert again.

Both players are transferring to junior college, where they will be eligible to play immediately, avoiding the NCAA rule that requires a player to sit out a year after transferring between FBS schools.

Wilson announced in April that he is transferring to Garden City Community College, and Jonsen announced last week that he will attend Riverside Community College.

The transfers leave Oregon with very little depth at quarterback going into the 2017 season.

Burmeister, a 4-star recruit out of La Jolla, California, will most likely assume the backup

role, meaning he won’t be able to redshirt. It’s rare for an Oregon quarterback not to redshirt their freshman year–Justin Herbert was the first Oregon quarterback to start as a true freshman since 1983.

Senior Taylor Alie, a former walk-on from Sheldon High School in Eugene, was a quarterback the past three seasons before switching to wide receiver on the spring roster. Alie will likely have to move back to quarterback as the Ducks’ third option.

Oregon has a proven starter in Herbert, who threw 19 touchdowns against 4 interceptions in 7 starts last season. But if Herbert gets injured this year, there’s nothing but uncertainty behind him.

Burmeister was an elite high school player and highly rated recruit, but has only been with the team for a few months. It takes time to develop a quarterback, and it would be unreasonable to expect much from Burmeister if he’s thrown into a game against a team with a strong defense like Washington or USC. Coaches redshirt elite quarterback prospects for a reason

The Ducks have experience in Taylor Alie, who is now a senior and played in 2015 when then-starter Vernon Adams was injured. But he only has 10 pass attempts in his career, and was unspectacular during his brief time playing under center.

Jonsen and Wilson were both 4-star recruits. If either had stayed, the Ducks would at least have a talented backup option with multiple years of experience in the system. But as transfer culture has become more prominent recently, highly ranked recruits don’t like to sit around as backups. Both Jonsen and Wilson will attempt to start for Division I programs after their year in junior college.

But according to coach Willie Taggart, the Ducks are alright with moving forward without them.

“It’s tough, the day and age we live in where guys feel entitled and are given so much,” Taggart told the Register Guard last week. “Then all of a sudden you come in and say, ‘You’ve got to compete for it.’ Some guys don’t like that. That’s fine. We don’t want those guys in here.”

The university’s applied sustainability think-tank, the Sustainable Cities Initiative (SCI), is harnessing the ambition of students and the knowledge of faculty members to help promote sustainable urban development and lead the global initiative to fight climate change.

Founded in 2007, SCI promotes education, service, public outreach and research on the design and development of sustainable city infrastructure, such as developing bikeways and improving pedestrian mobility. It also serves as the umbrella group for a variety of other projects that work to develop said sustainable cities through .

SCI’s most prominent program, the Sustainable City Year Program (SCYP), partners an Oregon city seeking sustainable and innovative ideas for development with university members across multiple disciplines.

Students and faculty from architecture to planning, public policy and management collaborate with city staff and elected officials to complete city-designated projects and provide creative proposals for sustainable development.

Dr. Marc Schlossberg, co-director of SCI and a Planning, Public Policy and Management professor, encourages students to realize the potential of bikeways and public transportation in cities through his work with the initiative. Schlossberg explains that incorporating students in the development and planning process takes pressure away from city planners, who often avoid taking risks due to the nature of local politics.

Removing this risk allows for the exploration and experimentation of new ideas, Schlossberg says. Because students are still learning, they have unique perspectives to propose bold solutions. “Students are able to find this sweet spot between realistic approaches for the community and a sense of utopian idealism,� Schlossberg said.

Schlossberg explained that SCYP benefits not only the city involved with the program, but also students and the community in general. This year, the program partnered with the city of Albany. “SCYP connects students with tangible projects which count as real work experience,� he said, “as well as addressing critical societal issues around sustainability, climate change and efficiently using taxpayer dollars.�

Mikailia McNeill, a graduate student who participated in this year’s SCYP project, says the experience of breaking the mold of the traditional classroom benefits students who seek a more practical and applied education. McNeill explains that the work done in her SCYPaffiliated class was much more than busy work. “This program allows you to be in a class, but also gain real life work experience. The deadlines are real, and your work impacts more than yourself,� she said. “This is how I see real life work experience, hopefully in this field, your work will always be affecting more people than yourself.�

SCYP plan to expand urban bikeways (SCI) In June, students and faculty presented their projects to Albany’s citizens, city staff and elected officials. Now, it is up to the city to choose which projects to implement.

According to Ed Hodney, Albany’s Park and Recreation director, the SCYP energized the city staff.

Hodney says that students have the time, creativity and drive to do what city planners wanted to do, but could not.

“With SCYP, we got many hours from students that generated tons of ideas which would not be generated by city staff due to the lack of enough time or resources to do the required critical thinking.”

Next year the sustainability program will take on its largest project yet: partnering with TriMet, Portland’s public transportation agency. SCYP will work with TriMet on dozens of projects aimed at expanding Southwest Portland’s public transportation infrastructure from its transit system to pedestrian crossings.

Initially, the program was known as “the Oregon Model,” a reference to its roots at the university.

But since its inception in 2009, other universities across the country and overseas expressed a great deal of interest in model, and ultimately, adopted and integrated it into their institutions.

This group of universities that use the “Oregon model,” comprise the Educational Partnerships for Innovation Communities-Network (EPIC-N).

Together, they represent dozens of states and over 30 universities spanning from Chattanooga, Tennessee to Chico, California.

Schlossberg explained the reasons behind EPICN’s success boil down to common traits present at every university: there are students who desire to change the world by applying what they learned in classes, and communities have problems without the tools to solve them. The EPIC-N provides a model for universities across the country to deploy passionate students into communities looking for a helping hand.

The nationwide success and replicable nature of the program’s framework attracted the attention of federal organizations such as the Environmental Protection Agency, which specializes in researching sustainability. Like the cities involved with EPIC-N, the agency lacked the mechanisms required to translate policy into practice. The EPA came to the same conclusion as many city planners: students are the bridge between research and application.

After EPIC-N’s recognition at the national level, sustainability movements within larger global organizations such as the United Nations became interested in testing the model in developing

economies, many of whom are particularly vulnerable to climate change. By collaborating with the EPIC-N, countries located in Sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia and Central and South America are working to implement sustainable framework within their cities.

Barney Dickson is the head of the Climate Change Adaptation Program, a sustainability movement within the United Nations Environment Program.

Dickson says the EPIC-N model could be a game changer for fighting climate change in developing countries.

“Extending the EPIC-N model to other parts of the world is an invaluable initiative that can help cities address the challenge of building resilience to climate change,” Dickson said.

Given the differences between regions’ geopolitical situations, it was unknown if the EPIC-N model would be applicable in other countries. Knowing that these countries operate under different circumstances, Schlossberg headed to Bonn, Germany in May with an open mind for the EPIC-N’s first international workshop.

Schlossberg and 18 pairs composed of university and city representatives from various developing countries met to discuss the EPIC-N. Despite Schlossberg’s initial uncertainty, the pairs were enthusiastic when it came to implementing the EPIC-N framework and the universal nature of the program became evident again.

Pairs discuss sustainable infrastructure at the 2017 EPIC-N conference in Bonn, Germany (SCI) According to Sean O’Donoghue, the manager of the climate protection branch of the environment department in Durban, South Africa, the results shown from the Bonn workshop are promising for developing nations in Africa.

“The EPIC-N approach will appeal to the partnership between African universities and cities because it’s the most affordable way to drive collaboration between departments and creating innovative ideas,” O’Donoghue said. “Pooling the available capability of African universities will help to fight climate change.”

As a response to the enthusiasm shown in Bonn, there are three follow-up workshops planned in South Africa, the Philippines and Ecuador.

While the international political dialogue around climate change will continue, the EPIC-N’s community-based initiatives provide a sustainable path forward for both Albany and Africa.

In Schlossberg’s eyes, students are taking the initiative to provide a better future.

“The EPIC-N framework harnesses existing resources to bring value for community, students and faculty,” he said. “Students are the mechanism for cities and universities to interact in a robust and fairly large-scale way.”

Review: Lorde looks back on her youth with

‘Melodrama’

Pronunciation is underappreciated in pop music. For Lorde, it’s an endearing strength.

The New Zealand vocalist, born Ella YelichO’Connor, never wastes a word, using her soft whispers to hang on to every lyric she writes.

The result is endlessly listenable, and it makes “Melodrama,� O’Connor’s sophomore effort, a sin to miss.

Make no mistake; her magnetism isn’t new.

Lorde crept into the public consciousness in 2013 with “Pure Heroine,� a soft and contemplative record that captured

small moments of her youth. Understated instrumentation coupled with her idiosyncratic voice helped the then 17-year-old girl capture the attention of millions. But even after earning two Grammys, her true potential felt untapped. “Pure Heroine� hinted at a talented storyteller and pop star, but whether Lorde had longevity remained in question.

Audiences would have to endure a nearly 4-year wait to find out. After a number of lengthy tours and side projects, Lorde all but disappeared from the eyes of the world. She

kept busy during the break: writing, turning 20 and dealing with heartbreak.

Finally, she returned in March with “Green Light.�

The single, produced by Bleachers frontman Jack Antonoff, hinted at a fuller, pop-influenced sound, and signaled an evolution for the artist. “I hear brand new sounds in my mind,� she coos in the track. Then, a rhythmic piano line slowly emerges like a sunrise, driving the track forward. “Green Light� sits at the start of the album’s track list, inviting listeners into Lorde’s new world. While the textures and sounds on “Melodrama� are similar to the artist’s previous work, producer Antonoff does a remarkable job keeping things fresh.

Tracks like “Sober,� which features chopped up samples and synthesized horns, offer peeks into the heights of a drunken house party which the album is reportedly based. “Supercut� replays the memories of a relationship in montage, using pulsing bass notes and an ethereal outro to connect it to the surrounding tracks. “Liability� is a piano ballad that showcases some of Lorde’s greatest lyricism, recalling the times when she felt unwanted by everyone but herself.

It’s heartbreaking and relatable.

The musical variety simultaneously exists inside and outside chart-

topping summer pop.

There are dark undertones scattered in between every scene-stealing anthem.

Lorde’s party isn’t censored by any means, and her accounts of each scene seem almost confessional.

She dances, downs drinks and hooks up with strangers, all the while remembering and trying to forget who broke her heart. “We’re sleeping through all the days / I’m acting like I don’t see,� she whispers. “But what will we do when we’re sober?�

It’s a question without easy answers. As Lorde looks back on her time as a teenager, it’s easy to hear longing. “The Louvre� captures the most blissful moments she spent young and in love. But while she sings, “Well, summer slipped us underneath her tongue / Our days and nights are perfumed with obsession,� the music won’t let the rosiness live forever.

As she comes to realize what it means to be a young woman, Lorde seems content with the search for a permanently youthful feeling, even if she may never reach it again. “Send us to perfect places,� she sings on the album’s final track, before concluding,“What the fuck are perfect places, anyway?� For Lorde, and others her age, those places exist only in the past.

Marks: Eight signs you’re in an abusive

relationship Relationships can be difficult to navigate, full of ups and downs. Sometimes you want to spend lots of time with your partner, and sometimes you just need some time alone. These are all normal aspects of a relationship.

But what happens when the relationship changes? When the behavior of your partner starts to enter dangerous territory? Sure, people change, but there are limits as to what is a normal disagreement or healthy behavior. When those limits are crossed, the relationship can become unhealthy. Here are a few ways to tell if your relationship has become unhealthy, or even abusive.

1. Your partner controls your time. Sure, when we were kids, our parents were pretty stingy about where we could go out, who we could go out with and how long we could stay out. But once you hit adulthood, it’s not your parents’ job to control your time, and it isn’t your partner’s either. It’s natural to want to spend time with your partner, but if they are trying to take up all of it, that’s a bad sign. They should not be able to dictate who you hang out with and for how long - your time is your own, and they should be respectful of that.

2. Your partner is unreasonably jealous. A little jealousy is perfectly natural in any relationship.

However, it’s easy for a little jealousy to turn into a lot. This makes it easy for your partner to make anything a big deal, even if it’s as simple as spending a few hours with one of your friends, or posting a picture on Instagram with someone besides your partner. Don’t let your partner’s jealousy guilt you into not hanging out with other people.

3. Your partner controls your social media. Social media are prevalent forms of self-expression.

Everyone uses it in different ways, whether it’s to communicate thoughts, display art or keep in touch with friends. An abusive partner might seek to control what you post, getting upset if certain people like your photos or if you don’t post enough about them. [quote align=’right’]But what happens when the relationship changes? When the behavior of your partner starts to enter dangerous territory?[/quote] 4. Your partner misinterprets everything you say.

You said, “I’d like to have alone time tonight to get some homework done� and they turned it into “You don’t love me anymore and never want to spend time with me or see me ever again.� You said, “I’m going to hang out with a friend tonight� and they heard “I’m going to go cheat on you.� This is not a normal or healthy aspect of a relationship. If they can’t trust you to mean what you say and twist everything around, they are being emotionally abusive.

5. Your partner doesn’t communicate with you.

When you were a kid, giving the silent treatment might have been your favorite way to show somebody you were mad. But we all know that’s not a good way to resolve a problem. If your partner drops off the face of the planet whenever you get into an argument, every situation can be blown out of proportion. Worse still is if you don’t know that your partner is upset with you. The best way to maintain a healthy relationship is through open and honest communication.

6. Your partner gaslights you. Gaslighting is unfortunately a fairly prevalent form of emotional abuse, in which the victim is tricked into

questioning their own perceptions and memories of a situation. It is a common tool of an emotional abuser, used to manipulate you into thinking that their perception is the “right� one and you’re just remembering the situation wrong.

7. Your partner blames you for anything that goes wrong. Tied to gaslighting, an emotionally abusive partner might blame you for anything that isn’t perfect in the relationship, even if it has nothing to do with you. Your partner might make you feel guilty in order to control your actions more easily, and use gaslighting as a tool to do so.

8. “If you leave me, I’ll hurt/kill myself.� This is one of the most manipulative tricks in the book. Maybe you’ve realized your relationship is unhealthy or abusive and you are getting ready to break it off. Nothing will stop you in your tracks like hearing your partner say something like this.

It makes it so that if you leave, and something happens, it seems like your fault. But it’s not. This is probably the biggest red flag I can think of, and a heavy indicator that your partner is emotionally abusive.

These are just some of the many ways that your partner can abuse or manipulate you. If you recognize any of these things happening in your relationship, I would encourage you to get some advice and think seriously about whether or not the relationship is worth it.
