Summer Trip
Packing Tips
Written by Lizzy Lee 8 | Ducks Living | Summer 2022
S
chool’s out! Now that spring term is behind us, it’s time to enjoy our summer break. For some people, that includes traveling. The world is going back to “normal” and borders are opening up. Traveling may be a family trip to Disneyland or visiting your roommate in Washington or even a summer study abroad program. Many of us want to make sure we have everything we need, especially when visiting a foreign place. Here are some tips and tricks for your next summer trip:
Packing List
Don’t Stress
Shout out to my mom for planting this habit in me. She always gave me a packing list when we had to pack for longer trips. This is definitely an extra step for most people, but even if you think you’re on top of everything, there’s still a chance you could be forgetting something.
By following these points, it has greatly decreased the anxiety I get before trips. I’m not lying awake the night before, worrying that I forgot something. Packing for trips is different for everyone. While I need to double check my list before I leave, my brother can just pack everything he needs for a week in 10 minutes. For those like me with packing anxiety, I recommend having a routine for packing. It can ease your nerves by having a set of things you always do before a trip. Develop a system that works for you, and stick to it!
If you’re short on time, there are a lot of good packing list pdfs online, and if you have the time, making a customized list can be helpful so you don’t forget important things that are specific to your needs. This applies to a specific group of people, but it also just feels satisfying to cross items off a list.
Think Ahead It’s also a good practice to plan ahead when you’re packing for a trip. This includes, but is not limited to, looking at the weather forecast, planning what type of activities you are going to do and how long you’re going to stay. When you’re going to visit Honolulu in the summer, you’re not going to pack a bunch of sweaters and jeans. If you’re planning to do a lot of outdoor activities, like hikes, it’s important to pack the right shoes and bug spray.
Roll, Not Fold Have you ever learned about a “hack” when you were younger and it just stuck with you? You’re not even sure if it really is a hack or not. Rolling my clothes is that for me. I remember reading somewhere that rolling your clothes is better than folding them. It saves space, it prevents wrinkles, and it can be easier for some people. Ever since then, I am a firm believer that rolling clothes is a packing must. Once I was able to fit three weeks of clothes in a carry-on by rolling them. Summer 2022 | Ducks Living | 9
On the Hunt: Tips and Tricks for Jobs Written by Hevenn Vanhelsdingen
As the school year comes to a close, graduating seniors may find themselves on the hunt for their first post-grad position. But even if you’re just looking for a summer job to fund your flings, here are some tips and tricks to make your hunt a little breezier.
Expert Advice: Get Organized. Resumes are the first show of experience that employers will see. It’s important to make sure the information is easy to read and highlights your skills effectively.
Understand Your Employer. Employers want to know how you will be able to help them specifically. Tailor your resume to the company you’re applying to so that it showcases which talents are relevant to the position. Individualized cover letters also help applicants stand out in a crowd of resume experience.
Be Prepared. This looks like a fully polished resume and cover letter, but employers also like to see that you did your research. Come prepared with questions about the company and position. Show the hiring manager you know who you’re applying to.

Resume Tips: Keep it short and sweet. Many employers will spend less than a minute looking at your resume. Making sure you fit all the important and relevant information as concisely as possible is crucial in grabbing the attention of employers.
Be strategic. Don’t create a list of every experience you’ve ever had. Employers want to know what you’ve done that’s relevant to them. This makes the information straight to the point and easy to digest.
Keep form. Don’t use bright or distracting colors. Make sure your format is consistent throughout the resume. Organize experiences in a way that is visually appealing.
Job Postings: There are many websites that will tell you about the job listings in your area, but some are easier to navigate to others. Students even have access to a special database of listings to explore. Here are some places to start your search:
Google Jobs: The Google Job Feature is a new addition to the job search list. The benefits of this source are applicants’ ability to filter their job search. Being able to edit location, job title, or even average salary helps narrow down the search to something more specific to your preferences.
Handshake: Many institutions have special student logins for Handshake. Here you can tailor your account just as you would a resume and apply directly through the site. Many local and on-campus positions will be listed here, and you can revise your search to just summer positions, or something more career related.
UO Career Center: Last but certainly not least, is the UO Career Center. This space is made for students. Here you can search for jobs, speak with advisors, learn about job fairs, and even connect with potential employers. This is your one stop shop for any question you have about what jobs are available to you. Visit the Career Center website to schedule an appointment with certified career coaches, launch Handshake, or even find tips on how to conduct a successful interview.
LinkedIn: Consider this the Facebook of job search platforms. Many employers use this site to list their opportunities as well as connect with potential candidates. Creating a profile that showcases your experience is a great way to show employers what you have to offer.

Best Safe Sun The
for this Summer Habits Written by Kelsie Heffernan
E
n joying the sun and spending time outdoors is one of the many joys of summer, but a bad sunburn can ruin it all! Having a good sunscreen ritual is a great way to
protect your skin all summer long and not sacrifice any of the fun.
More is Not Always Better
The best tip for any college student is how to save money, and luckily there are lots of cheap sunscreens that work just as well as their expensive counterparts. Most dermatologists recommend getting a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, and anything past 30 is not going to make a difference in coverage or protection. No need to splurge on sunscreen with SPF 60 this summer!
Reapply, Reapply, Reapply!
If you know you’re going to be out in the sun all day long, don’t forget your sunscreen at home. For the best UV protection, sunscreen should be reapplied every 2 hours.
Finding The Right Kind For You
Skin types vary person to person, so naturally, the same formula won’t work for everyone. For sensitive skin, baby sunscreen is a great option and is often gentler than the kinds marketed to adults with sensitive skin. For acne-prone skin, an oil-free formula will ensure you don’t have any unexpected breakouts in your vacation pictures. If you’re active and going to wear it while exercising or swimming, opting for a sport sunscreen will ensure it’s resistant to not only the sun, but to your sweat as well.
Look Hot but Avoid The Burn
If you’re someone who enjoys wearing makeup but doesn’t know how to layer it with sunscreen, find a foundation, moisturizer, or primer with built-in SPF. When you need to reapply your sun protection, you can also get a face setting spray with SPF that will lock your makeup in place and act as a sunscreen. If it’s a hot day and you anticipate you might get sweaty, a waterproof mascara will also help create a longlasting look.

Leave No Limb Behind
Have you ever thought you did everything possible to prevent a burn, but wake up to the backs of your thighs looking tomato-red? It’s important to cover every area that’ll be exposed to the sun, and there are lots you might not remember need covering. Your scalp has very delicate skin and needs some sort of sun protection. Before you go rubbing sun cream into your hair, opt for a scalp and hair spray with SPF, or go old school and wear a hat that will also protect your face and eyes. Lips are also very sensitive and there are lots of chapstick with SPF that will keep you burn-free.
Dress Wisely
Sometimes the best way to protect your skin from the sun is to not expose it at all, and if you know you’re going to be out all day and don’t want to bring sunscreen, consider wearing clothes that will cover your skin. If it’s not blistering hot, longer sleeves and darker colors will protect the best. Your eyes can actually get burnt too, so getting some cute sunglasses may be worth the investment this summer.
Don’t Forget About Your Pets
If you like to bring your dog along on a beach day, outdoor hike, or afternoon by the pool, you might not know that dogs can get sunburns too! This doesn’t mean you should leave them at home, but make sure if you’re setting up camp directly in the sun for multiple hours to bring a sun shade or beach umbrella to keep them covered. If they don’t mind wearing it, a hat that covers their face and eyes can also be a good option for something like a hike or a long walk.
