Letter from the editor, As we enter into the third year (insert heavy sigh here) of navigating both the pressures of college and the stressors of a global pandemic, it can be tough to feel the same rejuvenated energy that usually comes with the new year, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't still try. Check out this issue of Duck Living for ideas on setting mindful resolutions, rosters of great books and music to keep you motivated through the term and tips on how to take better care of yourself in more ways than one. Times are tough, but don't forget: We're all in this together. Stay safe out there Ducks, and enjoy!

WEEKEND TRIP GUIDE

W

inter term can prove challenging for many University of Oregon students. With gloomy weather and nonstop downpour, it can be difficult to boost your mood. Escaping Eugene and venturing to a new city will help cure your winter blues, and lucky for you, Seattle is a pleasant drive away. Just five hours north of Eugene is Seattle. Home to the Space Needle, Pike Place and the new Glossier store, the Emerald City has no shortage of sightseeing and shopping. Take your friends, your partner, or your parents for a weekend getaway. Airbnb has hundreds of rentals where you can enjoy all Seattle has to offer, or opt for a classic hotel stay. PORTLAND PIT STOP Your drive to Seattle can be even sweeter with a pit stop in Portland. With hundreds of restaurants to choose from, it can be hard to pick just one. Sweedeedee is a breakfast and lunch cafe that will keep you fueled for the remainder of your road trip. WIth a changing menu consisting of french toast or penne pasta, Sweedeedee has something for everyone. PIKE PLACE Upon arriving in Seattle, it’s good to know that Capitol Hill and Pioneer Square are just two locations in the downtown area where you can enjoy shopping and the best Seattle restaurants, and are a short walk to the famous Pike Place market. Pike Place market is the perfect activity to do any time of day. Packed with breweries, local markets, the famous fish tossing, and the first ever Starbucks, you are able to sightsee and shop the whole day.

MACRINA BAKERY Just a short walk from Pike Place market is Macrina bakery. Initially drawn by their storefront and unique logo design, Macrina offers breads, pastries, breakfast items, and a lunch menu with multiple locations. With lots of unique menu combinations like the chicken pot pie and the banh mi sandwich, Macrina will leave you pleasantly surprised. HEAD TO THE DOME Seattle is also home to the Tacoma Dome and the Seattle Seahawks. Being able to drive to Seattle for a concert – such as Justin Bieber, Celine Dion or Dierks Bentley who are all performing this winter – or to attend a Seahawks game can even add more adventure into an already eventful weekend. Spend your winter term seeing what the surrounding areas have to offer. In the dark, colder days of this term, it can be nice to expand your horizons and escape. Getting out of Eugene for a weekend will make your year that much more eventful and help broaden your adventure-based horizons!

Functional Spaces are

Happy

Places Written by Siena Dorman Photographed by Skyla Patton

ife since 2020 has forced us to learn how to find peace in our spaces. And maybe in 2021, we thought we could throw those practices out the window just a bit. Then 2022 caught us in the act. It turns out we’re kind of terrible at predicting the future. For now, we’re in a dance of exiting our comfort zones and receding back into them. But if there is one thing we can depend on for consistency, it’s the space we come home to. Now more than ever, functional spaces are happy places. It’s critical to respect what material pieces serve you in your home and to give them the best chance at doing so.

ONCE YOU’VE PULLED EVERYTHING OUT, PUT EVERYTHING BACK – but this time, with intention. I am a huge advocate for task specific piles. All of your technology related items should go into one container or drawer. Writing materials and stationary should be placed on or around your desk and file organizers should very well be mandatory in every home. Continue to make piles with items that would better suit bathroom cabinets and make a pile for miscellaneous items. It might feel like you’re preparing to move, but that’s the point! Items are packed by category so you know where to find them.

FIRST, MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR BELONGINGS ARE so they can be organized. Empty cluttered drawers, pull the storage boxes out of the closet and get rid of things you forgot existed. You don’t need to purge everything, just the items that no longer serve you. As Marie Kondo says, ask yourself: “Does this bring me joy?” If the answer is no, it’s time to get rid of it. This is an especially helpful practice in your bedroom because it should be a place for creativity and productivity. It’s the most personal space in a home and should reflect your values and ways of learning. Grab a trash bag and get to work, clutter is your enemy and will consistently pull you off track.

CATEGORIZING YOUR BELONGINGS could take a few hours, so be patient and don’t move to maximizing your space until you’re done. When you are finished organizing, consider what possibilities your home has. How can it best serve you? Think about the activities you do at home. Do you make music, practice yoga, work from home, host dinners or perform self care? Find out what it is you want your home to do for you. THE KEY TO MAXIMIZING YOUR SPACE is adaptability. Head to the thrift store and find storage furniture that could be used as is or refurbish something you already have. Book

shelves are great for storing extra board games or your vinyl collection. Use your vertical space! Installing floating shelves and command hooks are other ways to put your walls to use. Use containers if you need to further categorize your shelves. I’ve found that keeping the middle of my living spaces open allows me to transform them according to my needs. IF YOUR LIVING SPACES DON’T INVITE YOU to spend time in them, purchase a green plant, thrift a mirror to hang up, add a clock or other things that make spaces both more beautiful and peaceful. MAINTAINING A FUNCTIONAL SPACE IS REALLY ENJOYABLE if you don’t have to question where items belong and if you don’t forget about them. Eliminate your clutter, categorize your items, store them vertically when possible and watch your home become the host to anything you’d like.

Resolutions

That Last All Year

2022

N

Written by Siena Dorman Photographed by Skyla Patton

ew Year’s resolutions can feel a lot like starting the winter term: it begins really motivated, regimented and organized, but with time and the drab Oregon weather that motivation can fade. But, if you’re on top of it, small habit changes and selfdiscipline can carry you through the term. Do yourself a favor and consider the small changes you can make that satisfy your long term goals. Grab a pen and paper and roll up your sleeves: it’s time to make some small but meaningful changes.

Step one:

Reflect on last year. What didn’t work? What did? Write out a reflection, look back at old text messages, photos, books you read, movies you watched and friends you made. If you notice repetitive messages or issues arising, that will indicate a good place to begin your goal setting. Think about the structures in your life: morning routine, what time you were getting to bed and how consciously you spent your days last year. Taking the time to get to know yourself and your habits is crucial for making progress.

Step two:

Look forward. What version of yourself do you want to meet at the end of 2022? Consider the people in your life and what kind of work you want

14 | Duck Living | Winter 2022

to be doing. How many books have you read, what challenges have you overcome, how does your body feel? These are so important to consider when beginning to create goals for yourself. Write out a dream scenario for December of 2022. This should be fun, and it gives you a clear trajectory for your goal planning.

Step three:

If you’re a bit stuck or overwhelmed looking to your future, locate sources of inspiration. Your heart tells you everything. I like to create a Mood Board to center the energy I’m seeking for the year. Rolling Stone, Vogue, GQ and various travel magazines help me when it comes to seeking inspiration. Cut out words, outfits, article excerpts and beautiful locations from magazines. Play music that makes you feel good and grab something to drink: tea, wine, water – whatever! With the help of some mod podge and a free afternoon, you will really get your gears turning. Life hack: Mood boards serve as a great spot for miscellaneous items you’ve gathered from the previous year. For 2021, I glued on postcards, sweet cards from friends and family, museum tickets etc. It’s a much better place for meaningful items than sitting in the bottom of a

forgotten drawer.

Step four:

Write your resolutions. Now is the time to articulate your goals. Take the information you’ve collected about your past and future and evaluate what is keeping you from achieving your honest desires. Make a big list or a small one. The important thing is to get it all written out. You’re looking for something tangible here. Once you feel satisfied, choose around three or four goals to set your 2022 intentions with. Some can be as broad as be courageous or as specific as the number of meals you want to cook for yourself each week.

Step five:

Be a little selfish and find out your “how.” This step might be the most important one for the success of your goals. Write out how you’re going to make them happen then take the time to actually follow through. Goals mean nothing if you don’t have a plan for achieving them. A little structure and focused alone time goes a long way. Read your goals each morning and plan out how you can make one step towards meeting them. This can take anywhere from 5 to 25 minutes, it’s just important that you’re consistent.

Fun

egular physical activity is important for mental and physical wellbeing, but exercising shouldn’t feel like punishment. Staying active is difficult for a lot of people because they find things like running or weightlifting boring and sometimes painful. It’s hard to find energy and motivation to do something every day if it’s not fun. Going to the gym for the first time can also be overwhelming. The truth is, being active can mean a lot more than spending an hour at the gym. A lot of fun and creative ways exist to get your blood pumping if typical forms of exercise are not accessible or fun for you. At the end of the day, any form of activity is good. Since you’ll hopefully stay active the rest of your life, pick something that makes you happy!

1. Dance

As simple as it sounds, dancing can be a great workout. Although there are plenty of YouTube videos that take you through a dance workout, you can also just try playing some music and get moving in whatever way feels good.

2. Home workouts 4. Exercise Although this technically is classified with a group as structured exercise, what stops many people from exercising is feeling intimidated by the gym, not being able to afford a membership or lack of transportation. Many free home workout videos are online, but you can also get creative with household items like jugs of water and heavy books as weights.

Planning runs with friends, trying new workout classes, or going on bike rides together can hold yourself accountable to exercising frequently and also make it more fun.

A good home workout might look like:

5. Say yes to stairs

A 5-minute warm-up consists of: 1 minute of marching in place, 1 minute of high knees, 1 minute of jogging in place, 1 minute of jumping jacks and 1 minute of butt kicks. Alternating 2-4 times: 1-minute plank, focusing on keeping a straight line from the crown of your head to your tailbone 10-20 jumping lunges (or normal lunges) 10-15 squats (optional: use a jug of water, heavy book, or some sort of weight held in front of body) 10-20 pike push-ups (start in a downward dog position and perform the push-up by bending your elbows out and aiming your head between your hands) 10-20 glute bridges (lay flat on your back and bend your knees until your feet are close to your bottom, then lift your hips and squeeze your glutes at the top and come back down) 20 plank shoulder taps (plank with arms straight under shoulders and take turns tapping one shoulder and then the other, trying to keep the rest of the body still)

3. Adventure

Hiking and walking is great exercise, and planning hikes to somewhere new or long walks exploring the city with friends can be really fun. Before you know it, you’ll have walked for way longer than you ever would have on a treadmill.

(and the other activities we all avoid) Many times, we’ll choose the closest parking space, wait for the elevator or choose to drive somewhere that’s only a short walk. All of these choices make our lives very convenient, but at the end of the day, we were meant to move. Being too sedentary can have many negative consequences to our health. The next time you choose to drive to the store that’s only a 10-minute walk or call an elevator to travel one story, consider choosing to move instead. Being active in small bits throughout the day can add up. Splitting it up into small parts can be a lot easier for some people than a 30-minute workout all at once.

Quickfire tips

Hula hooping, scootering and jumping rope are all ways of being active that we may not have done since we were kids but can be super fun to try again! If exercising for a whole hour feels monotonous or you’re too busy, try a HIIT workout. HIIT stands for high intensity interval training. It involves doing hard moves for a very short period of time (like 30-60 seconds at a time) with small breaks of 15-30 seconds for a total of 2030 minutes. Winter 2022 | Duck Living | 15
