Letter from the editor, The three words "back to school" have never felt sweeter than they did this term as students, faculty and the hustle and bustle returned to UO's campus this fall. Here at Duck Living, we are absolutely thrilled to be back in the office, out on the streets and working together as a group after a year and a half of being remote, and if that's not a reason to be joyful, we don't know what is. The transition from summer to fall can feel daunting with the start of school, cold weather and shorter days upon us. Your bright and airy summer days are now crisp and autumnal.

Having a living space that reflects this new season of autumn helps to ease the transition. Small changes in and around your house can encourage a pleasant shift in your mindset from bright summer days to chill fall nights.

Making good use of the kitchen

The kitchen is more often than not the meeting place of the house; somewhere everyone congregates to cook, share, and celebrate. Incorporating Halloween-themed cups, dish towels or even napkins can encourage a mindset shift into this new fall season. Cooking is another inclusive way to get into the autumnal season. Whether you're baking pumpkin seeds, trying Trader Joe’s new pumpkin bread, or - making pumpkin-spiced drinks, having an activity where all roommates or guests can be involved is ideal. Candy is a large part of the Halloween holiday, and rightfully so.

Incorporating a trick-or-treat bucket filled with candy will serve as a snack jar for your roommates (or even just for yourself if you’re not interested in sharing).

Go wild in the living room

The living room is arguably the room where the most decorating can be done. Target’s $1 section is your best friend when you need to add pumpkin candles, throw pillows, or other knick-knacks to the coffee table. If you’re

willing to spend more than what the dollar section has to offer, getting seasonal Squishmallow’s can help brighten the mood of any room and be the topic of conversation.

Heading outside

The exterior of a house is often forgotten about with the excitement of the interior. Hanging string lights is an easy way to bring more cheer into a season with shorter days.

Coming home from a class on campus only to find that your house is lit up with string lights would brighten anyone's mood. Adding a Halloween or autumn-themed doormat is a small touch that also serves as an aid to the season.

Cozying up the bedroom

Your bedroom should act as a room of relaxation in the colder months. Investing in softer lighting like salt lamps or string lights can help you de-stress and become calmer.

Aromatherapy is another way to help your mind and body relax. Having an essential oil diffuser diffuse autumnal scents like cinnamon, vanilla, or even pumpkin will put you in the mood for fall. Color scheme is also an important factor to consider in decorating. If you’re leaning more towards Halloween-themed decor, try darker hues of orange, beige and purples. If the autumnal season as a whole interests you more, shoot for lighters shades of beige, red, orange and yellow.

It’s safe to say A LOT has changed since students left campus almost two years ago. Walton is no longer open to students, Hayward field construction has finished, Tykeson Hall is officially opened for classes, the rec fields are open and in use by fall sports teams and the Phil and Penny Knight Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact is open (hint: the shiny one with the sky bridge).

All of these newly opened buildings have students wondering where they should explore and study now that many classes are back on campus. “I like the science library because it feels like you're outside with so many windows. It is super light and quiet, so I am able to easily get all of my work done,” said senior Kaylee Smith.

The new Unthank Hall has some of the best food the dorms have ever seen, claims sophomore Mackenzie Knutson. “I had the pepperoni pizza from Hearth and Soul and it’s reputation precedes it! I was also pleasantly surprised to find that the new dorm hall has sparkling water on tap,” said Knutson.

Outside of dorm food, some new restaurants have opened up near campus. Fat Shack on Patterson is a new restaurant serving burgers, sandwiches, wings, milkshakes and deepfried desserts. “Fat Shack has a yummy mix of typical American cuisine and carnival-style fried food. It’s open until one in the morning, so it has been my favorite stop for a late-night snack since coming back to Eugene for the school year,” said sophomore Sarah Clark. Additionally, Nektar Juice Bar recently opened up a location on 13th Avenue. Nektar has been a longtime go-to for a smoothie, juice or acai bowl at it's location in the Oakway Center. Sophomore Dylan Toler describes Nektar as her favorite destination when she is craving something filling and fresh. She also mentioned Nektar always serves her “service with a smile.”

Campus is looking lively again and with school back in swing 13th Avenue is back to being a popular commute route. In addition to Nektar, Cafe Yumm has recently opened up shop on 13th. Cafe Yumm is a popular restaurant throughout the Pacific Northwest and relocated to a closer spot near campus; making it more accessible for students craving their signature sauce. “Cafe Yumm is my favorite option when I am looking for a post-workout meal. I feel like it is a healthier option compared to some other on-campus meals,” said sophomore 6 | Duck Living | Fall 2021

Maddie Dowd. Toxic Wings is a fun new spot tucked between Bobahead, a bubble tea bar, and Webfoot Bar and Grill, a popular bar for upperclassmen. “Toxic Wings has a fun and lively atmosphere and I found it to be a hotspot when it comes to meeting new students,” said sophomore Kendall Gimenez.

Finally, Alton Baker Park is a classic spot when you are looking for a break from the campus scene. Located just across the river, Alton Baker Park consists of the area surrounding Autzen Stadium. It has over 410 acres of trails, river walks and beautiful foliage to take your mind off of the stress of school and daily life. So, whether you are looking for a new study spot, a walk to clear your mind or some fun new restaurants to test out this term, there’s plenty of fresh places to explore.

Back to COVID-Campus

W elcome back, Ducks! For many of us, this fall term will be our first one back on campus since the University of Oregon moved to online courses at the beginning of spring 2020. And for many more of us, this will be our first time taking classes on campus altogether.

While it’s exciting to be here and enjoy all that an in-person fall term in Eugene has to offer, there still remains that lingering uncertainty surrounding the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and what that means for campus life. As much as we’d like to be, we’re

“We’ve spent the last 20 months looking at each other as vectors of risk, rather than as part of a community that we want to embrace,” said UO President Michael Schill in a report to the university’s Board of Trustees prior to the start of fall term. “So it’s going to take some time, I think, for all of us ... to get over some of the anxiety that all of us feel.”

How can we navigate being back at school while keeping ourselves and those around us safe from infection?

What do the regulations say?

Making the most of COVID-Campus

Let’s start with the state of Oregon’s guidelines. According to the guidance from the Oregon Health Authority, Gov. Kate Brown along with OHA leaders enacted a universal mask mandate for all indoor spaces. As of Aug. 27, Brown extended that mandate to most public outdoor spaces if physical distancing is impossible, regardless of your vaccination status. These guidelines were a reinstatement of the mask mandates she’d lifted one June 30, as the delta variant had begun to surge throughout the United States.

Knowing some of the regulations in place on campus to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19 may reduce some of the anxieties we might have going into the term. That being said, the rest of the responsibility of having a safe transition back to campus falls to us.

In the case of immunization, all Oregonians age 12 and older are eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. Oregon is also following the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommendation for a third booster of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for people 65 and older and the immunocompromised. The CDC issued this recommendation Sept. 24.

What is UO doing?

Starting with mask mandates, UO’s guidelines are pretty consistent with the state, requiring masks in all indoor settings and most outdoor spaces where social distancing is impossible regardless of vaccination status.

Of course, some exceptions to this rule would be if you’re in a room alone, actively eating or drinking in most settings, in your own campus housing room, in a shared residence hall restroom or if you have accommodation for a medical condition or disability that makes it difficult to breathe while wearing a mask.

Students seeking such accommodations can request them through the Accessible Education Center, and faculty and staff can request through the Office of Human Resources.

Additionally, UO required proof of vaccination status prior to the start of fall term to work, live and attend in-person instruction on campus. However, you could request an exemption that would require you to undergo weekly COVID-19 testing. The deadline to report your proof of vaccination status or exemption was Sept. 27.

According to the UO’s COVID-19 safety dashboard, 96.3% of students and 95.3% of faculty and staff reported being fully vaccinated. The small percentage of individuals remaining were exemptions.

1. Social distance when you can.

This is one of the most effective ways to slow the spread of COVID-19. Still limiting your close contact with people whenever possible is always the best way to avoid catching or spreading the virus. With that said, we can’t always stay six feet away from people, especially in a classroom setting. This is where the next tip comes in.

2. Mask up.

Making sure you wear a mask that fully covers your nose and mouth where and when it’s required is another important part in keeping those around you safe. “Masks are proven to significantly limit the spread of COVID-19, including the delta variant,” Andre LeDuc, UO’s chief resilience officer, said. “This requirement will remain in place until no longer necessary from a public health standpoint.”

3. Get regularly tested.

Those with vaccine exemptions will already be required to undergo weekly COVID-19 testing, but this tip can apply to vaccinated people, as well. In a weekly report regarding breakthrough cases — when a fully vaccinated individual tests positive for COVID-19 — the OHA attributed roughly a quarter of Oregonians that tested positive for the virus to breakthrough cases.

The OHA still contends that vaccination is “the most effective tool to reduce the spread of COVID-19,” with many breakthrough cases “believed to experience no symptoms or minimal symptoms.” Nevertheless, it’s better to get regularly tested out of an abundance of caution while we’re still in this transitional period in the pandemic.

4. Stay home if you’re feeling sick.

This is perhaps the most important tip of all. Make it a habit to do a regular symptom check every morning before starting your day. If you feel any symptoms that might be linked to COVID-19, your best course of action is to stay home so as not to potentially spread the virus to others.

Sharing is a bit taboo these days and single-use bottles is not it when you have world renowned Oregon tap water at your fingertips. √ Don’t Trust The Weather App Be sure to pack a raincoat before heading back to school. This may feel rather obvious but it can’t be a back to school list at the UO without it. If you have something against raincoats, the parkas at the Duck Store are simply classic. √ Keep Your Stuff Clean If the last year has taught us anything, it’s that germs are a huge no-go. Buy some hand sanitizer that won’t dry out your hands (Hempz has a great one) and a bit of hand lotion with you. Keep an extra mask in your bag and be sure to have a pouch for your rings when washing your hands.

athering everything you need for your fall return to campus is never easy. With the restrictions put in place by the pandemic, it’s likely that these days you have even more questions about your back to school necessities.

So, from a bit of experience and peer outsourcing, is a college shopping list for 2021. √ A Mask You Can Speak In By now everyone has a favorite mask, but how many of them really stay in place while you speak? No one wants to adjust their mask throughout a conversation – it can get a bit… repetitive. The masks offered to students by the UO do a great job at keeping you covered, largely thanks to the wire adjustment that lines the top of the mask. Unlike typical single-use masks, the UO masks can be washed and reused, but find whatever works for you. √ Keychains You Won’t Lose While I’m not necessarily advocating for an Apple AirTag, I highly suggest grabbing a UO lanyard or a keychain that hooks onto bags, wallets, or – rather loudly – belt loops. What’s worse than being locked out?

√ U-Shaped Bike Lock You don’t want to make the mistake of leaving your bike out with a wire lock. While the people in Eugene are wonderful, no city is perfect and a bike secured with a flimsy lock may likely get grabbed. U-shaped bike locks are wire-cutter proof and allow you to lock your wheels up with confidence.

As we head into arguably the most stressful year of classes to-date, the concept of self care is now more important than ever, from prioritizing mental health to implementing small things that bit by bit make our days a little better. Aromatherapy is a great tool for not only practicing self care and natural remedies, but also in using our sensory brain to help navigate things like stress and anxiety.

Caution! Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts that should be used sparingly and with caution around pets and children especially.

They are not intended to be used without extreme dilution and even then should not be used directly on the skin or consumed in any way.

Check out these tips and tricks on integrating aromatherapy into your life this year.

Invest in a diffuser of your preference

Diffusers are so popular these days it’s easy to find one that works for you and fits into your routine. There are a lot of different styles of diffusers, so do some research to find out which works best for you.

Evaporating/Ultrasonic Diffusers: Most common these days, ultrasonic or evaporative electric diffusers use water and essential oils to create a fine mist that is pumped throughout a room. These work great for small home spaces, offices or dorm rooms. If you’d like to take your diffuser on the go, search online for a portable version to be used in cars or while traveling.

Using smells as a regulation response

Have you ever smelled a certain scent that took you back in time to a certain memory or feeling? Our olfactory system, also known as our sense of smell, is closely connected to the parts of our brain that regulate emotions and feelings. Beyond enjoying a moment of nostalgia from a passing scent, it’s actually possible to train your brain into recognizing a certain scent as a signal to respond or feel a certain way.

For example, if you suffer from anxiety, pick a scent with calming properties (such as eucalyptus or lavender) and have it on-hand so when you start to feel odd, you can give it a sniff and focus on the scent rather than the anxiety. Eventually, your brain will begin to draw neurological pathways between the scent of choice and the process of calming down and regulating, and the process will become easier and easier.

Essential oil blends to test out: Energy: 1 drop Rosemary, 1 drop Peppermint, 1 drop Lemongrass Happiness: 1 drop Bergamont, 2 drops Lavender, 1 Grapefruit Focus: 1 drop Lime, 1 drop Lemon, 2 drops Spearmint Sleep: 2 drops Eucalyptus, 1 drop Peppermint, 1 drop Spearmint Relaxing: 1 drop Frankincense, 2 drops Cypress, 1 drop Lavender

Drop Diffusers: “Drop” diffusers are often DIY-materials such as terracotta, fabrics or cotton pillows that hold scents and can be refreshed repeatedly with new oils and combinations . The scented oil is added sparingly (2-3 drops per scent) and often lasts several days before fading.

Reed Diffusers: Reed diffusers are the classic and oldest version of diffusing that is still used commonly in households today, but for good reason. Reed sticks sit in essential oils that have been diluted slightly less than usual, and the scent travels up the reeds to slowly integrate into the air around it. This method is a bit more slow and steady than an electric diffuser, but is great for larger homes and doesn’t require a plugin.
