WHAT IS 25 DUCKS? With approximately 23,000 students at the University of Oregon, multiple students have been selected by their peers, professors and University of Oregon staff for the opportunity to win the prize of being a 25 Duck. The award is bestowed upon individuals who show impressive leadership, innovation and passion, and after a month-long nomination period, a panel of students and professionals from the Alumni Center and the Emerald Media Group selected 25 students to represent this yearâ€™s winners. These 25 diverse students come from a variety of backgrounds all around the world. With varying major focuses and extracurricular involvement, these outstanding Ducks are affecting amazing change throughout the campus. They are some of the most driven and enthusiastic individuals within their programs and workplaces, and serve as an inspiration to all those around them. The University of Oregon fosters a community of passionate, hardworking students and the Emerald Media Group is honored to have the opportunity to recognize these individuals. This yearâ€™s honorees feature students with backgrounds ranging from the military to peer mentorship to human rights advocacy. The University is truly benefiting every day from the actions of these talented Ducks, and the passion of the following students is sure to benefit their future communities as well. Inside are the stories of 25 thoughtful, altruistic and ambitious students whom we are thrilled to welcome to the 25 Ducks family.

Christian Avila Major: Biology Year: Junior

How/Why do you want to change the world?

Growing up, I thought that having a lot of money and a nice car would make me happy. After spending only a short time volunteering with my fire department and at Food For Lane County, I have learned that being a part of those groups makes me the happiest. I’ve learned how suddenly a person’s life can change for the worse but also how much of a difference a small group can make. Now I know that helping others is the most meaningful way of spending my life.

What are you proud to have been involved with at UO?

At UO, I learned to have confidence in myself after I signed up for a FIG and did not realize that I accidentally signed up for honors chemistry. I was scared, but I stuck with it. I learned that teaming up with my peers made the exams a lot more manageable. Now, at the start of every term, I try my best to team up with diligent people and as a result, my family here in Eugene keeps on growing.

Who is your biggest role model and why?

My biggest role model is my younger sister. She is the most loyal person I know and is very passionate about serving the community as a volunteer fire fighter. She spends a lot of time driving so that she can keep on learning more in fire training and so that she completes her EMT and Paramedicine program at Lane. I also love that she proves me wrong all the time.

What are your goals after college?

I don’t know which character is most like me, but I wish I could experience what it is like to be a part of “Stranger Things”. I like the adventures that those kids go on and the old (now classic) cars that everyone drives in the show. Sometimes I feel like the big nerd: Bob; and other times I feel like the little nerd: Dustin.

Which fictional character is most like yourself?

I would like to serve my community as a pediatric plastic surgeon. I was inspired after seeing a commercial about Operation Smile: an organization that provides free surgery to children who are born with a cleft lip or cleft palate. My motivation has only grown after seeing the attention provided to my cousin by a plastic surgeon after her horrible car accident.

What is one fun fact about you?

I spent more than two weeks backpacking in North Cascades National Park in high school with a bunch of strangers my age. We each carried half our weight in food and gear, canoed and swam in the beautiful Ross lake, while only depending on our toothbrushes and one tube of toothpaste for hygiene.

Cassidy Bender Major: Biology Year: Senior

How/Why do you want to change the world?

Over the years, I have volunteered my time with various minority and low-income populations. My experiences have really fueled my passion to continue to work with the underrepresented, specifically through healthcare. Ultimately, I want to help improve some of the disparities seen in healthcare quality among these populations.

What are you proud to have been involved with at UO?

I am a research assistant in the Culture and Health Promotion Lab. Our lab focuses on factors that negatively affect health outcomes among communities in need. This lab has given me the opportunity to work on collaborative studies and create my own individual project. I am currently working on my thesis that looks at the association between depression and BMI among Latinx adults.

Who is your biggest role model and why?

My grandmother is my biggest role model. She immigrated to the US with mom during a war in hopes of extended opportunities and freedom. Throughout all of the sacrifices she had to make, her smile never disappeared. In my eyes, she is the epitome of strength.

What are your goals after college?

After graduating this June, my dad and I are going to volunteer in various orphanages in Southeast Asia. In the fall, I will be attending medical school. After I finish my residency, my goal is to volunteer my time in third-world countries and also in local homeless clinics.

Which fictional character is most like yourself?

I would say that I’m most like Shuri from “Black Panther.” She has an infectious game-for-anything energy and her spunk always lightens the mood.

What is one fun fact about you?

I have been to almost every state in the United States, 8 more to go!

Rachel Benner

Major: Media Studies and Advertising Year: Senior How/Why do you want to change the world?

I want to tell responsible, impactful stories in my life and career. It is an incredibly important time in history to be studying communications or creating any kind of media. Podcasts, advertisements, and everything in-between have powerful cultural significance, and media landscapes are changing all the time. It’s exciting. I want to be a part of that and make a difference.

What are you proud to have been involved with at UO?

I am very proud to be a coach at the School of Journalism and Communication’s Writing Central. I’m passionate about peer mentoring and the importance of writing. Working at Writing Central combines those things and is so rewarding. I also work with some incredible people who are passionate about the same things.

Who is your biggest role model and why?

My role model is a teacher I had in high school named Ms. Pandey. She left personal comments on assignments, helped students outside the classroom, and inspired everyone she taught to be better people. In her classes, I felt heard. Learning from Ms. Pandey changed my approach to education and life. I hope to someday have that effect on someone else.

What are your goals after college?

Above all, I want to lead by example in the professional world and impact others through storytelling and creativity. More specifically, after college I plan to move to New York City and pursue a career in brand strategy. Long term, I want to go to graduate school. Who knows — maybe I’ll end up in law school and live out my dream of becoming Elle Woods.

Which fictional character is most like yourself?

Some people say Dug, the dog from “Up”... but I also feel a deep connection with Francie Nolan, the protagonist of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, which is one of my favorite novels.

What is one fun fact about you?

I’ve attended Pride celebrations in 3 countries outside the U.S. — all in one summer. NYC World Pride 2019, here I come!

Soﬁa Bermudez-Eredia

Major: International Human Rights and Law and Ethnic Studies Year: Junior How/Why do you want to change the world?

I want to make the world a more inclusive and safer place that not only provides justice, but voice to those who are/were oppressed and exploited, not only internationally, but here in the U.S as well. Hopefully I can accomplish this by advocating for marginalized communities and social justice issues through art, activism, and policies!

What are you proud to have been involved with at UO? I am very proud to be part of the First-Year Interest Group (FIG) programs here on campus because they have helped me realize many of my strengths. I am very proud to be a part of the Wayne Morse Scholarship program which has continuously engaged me with politics and public policy. I am also proud to be a Peace Corps Ambassador. And I am also thankful for recently being a part of the student advisory board for the Counseling Center, KWVA, and the Intersectional Events team!

Who is your biggest role model and why?

Nick Capaldini

Major: Product Design Year: Senior How/Why do you want to change the world?

Because I love our world enough to see that those who come after me find it a better place because I was here.

What are you proud to have been involved with at UO?

I am honored to have been a University Innovation Fellow for the University of Oregon. When selected for the program I felt that Oregon took a chance on me, a chance other schools would not have taken. I am grateful and have done my best to exceed expectations.

Who is your biggest role model and why?

Benjamin Franklin because he lived an original life. He founded the United States, invented a musical instrument used by both Mozart and Beethoven and was inducted into the international swimming hall of fame. He was not just a politician, he was Benjamin Franklin.

What are your goals after college?

I was raised by two strong Mexican-American parents who taught me how to appreciate life and the meaning of hard work. My parents grew up fighting for a better life. They not only introduced me to the importance of my culture and identity, but to the importance of using that identity to advocate for my community and others. They have also provided me with many opportunities to help me realize my dreams.

My goals are to do a one arm pull-up by 2019, win the Forbes Under 30 Award by 2021 and by 2060 make enough money that I will be able to pay for my grandchildren’s college education.

What are your goals after college?

What is one fun fact about you?

I hope to pursue a career in foreign policy, focusing on promoting human rights and transitional justice. Along the way, I am interested in joining the Peace Corps, getting a law degree, and possibly a cinema studies and journalism degree so I can travel around the world and promote activism and education through storytelling and art.

Which fictional character is most like yourself?

James Bond because we are both calm, tough and relentlessly resourceful. I can memorize a deck of cards.

Which fictional character is most like yourself?

Any character that Michelle Rodriguez plays, Lisbeth Salander from”The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” or Yu Shu Lien from “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.” These are all bad ass women who are passionate and have broken the boundaries of what it means to be a woman while fighting for causes they believe in.

What is one fun fact about you?

I have a bird named after Nacho from “Nacho Libre” (one of my favorite movies).

Jon Caponetto

Major: Music Performance Year: Junior How/Why do you want to change the world?

I want to change the world by being a role model to the group of students who don’t get opportunities like other kids do. I want to be the reason why kids leave bad family lives and make something out of themselves. I want to show kids that the world is a giant place filled with endless opportunities and through music, they will have the chance to be apart of it. I want to create strong, independent leaders for the future of the world.

What are you proud to have been involved with at UO?

I am proud to have been a part of the vast array of musical performances the UO has given me. Whether it be performing in the historic Beall Hall, or in the Hult Center, and even in Autzen Stadium, each performance makes me feel pride in both myself and in being here at school.

Who is your biggest role model and why?

My biggest role model is a split between Bill Gates and my tribal community. Bill Gates is the reason why I am in college and won’t have to pay for any of it myself. I want to be a person who gives so much to those in need and that are deserving. In addition, my tribal community has been the biggest supporter of my higher education. I want to be a role model for the future generation and show them that we as a people can be a part of higher education and live lives that are better than what’s on the Rez.

What are your goals after college?

Upon leaving the UO I hope to be going into grad school at a top school for music in either New York (Manhattan School of Music) or Texas (Rice University). After completing a Masters program, I want to look for jobs as a professional trombonist as well as being a music teacher in a public school district inspiring kids to play.

Which fictional character is most like yourself?

I think a fictional character that embodies me would be Miguel from the movie “Coco.” He has that spirit about wanting to play music and be a musician that is so much me! I would do anything so that I could be a musican just like him even if family isn’t very supportive of that dream. Also, my dog is almost exactly like Miguel’s dog too.

What is one fun fact about you?

I am a certified American Poultry Association (APA) Judge and can judge in any APA event!

Marisol Cervantes

Major: Planning, Public Policy and Management Year: Senior How/Why do you want to change the world?

I want to be able to be part of the process of providing the necessary resources to underserved communities to be able to live a healthy and sustainable life. Coming from a socioeconomically disadvantaged community I’ve witnessed the basic living needs disadvantaged communities are (deprived of) not provided. I want to be able to help rebuild/build communities where a sustainable life is possible for all people. Being part of the change process is the beginning of making this world a beautiful place for everyone to enjoy!

Itzel Chavez Gomez

Major: General Social Science Crime, Law, Society. Year: Senior How/Why do you want to change the world?

I want to provide Black and Brown youth with opportunities for success, whatever that may be for them. Too often youth of color are told they’re not good enough, they won’t make it, and don’t have systems of support. I want to be that support for them. I want to show them that they matter, that they’re loved.

What are you proud to have been involved with at UO?

I am proud to have been involved with the PPPM Student Community Organization all my four years at the UO. I met so many inspiring and highly motivated people that have influenced me to continue working hard on the issues that matter the most to me.

Being the Sexual Violence Prevention and Education Coordinator for the Women’s Center and the Office Assistant for Sexual Wellness Advocacy Team has changed my life. For the past two years I’ve coordinated Take Back The Night. Working to amplify voices who’ve been silenced and pushed to the margins, to tell them they matter, it’s hard work but it’s necessary. Seeing campus and community join together to end sexual violence and support survivors reminds me that we’re never alone in this fight.

Who is your biggest role model and why?

What are you proud to have been involved with at UO?

I could never answer this question as one person because I have to large influences in my life, my mother and my older sister. My mother’s drive of working hard taught me that hard work and dedication will take you so many places, she always tells me “that your own education and knowledge is such a powerful tool nobody can take away from you, use it!” My sister was the first in my family to attend a four-year college and while working full time and studying she empowered me at such a young age to give it my all and purse a higher education.

What are your goals after college?

After I graduate I plan to work for a couple years in the public sector hopefully somewhere in Oregon if not back home in California. Following that I want to pursue my Masters in City Planning.

Which fictional character is most like yourself?

Winnie the Pooh because we both LOVE sweets, enjoy building strong friendships with others, while also being strong and dependable people to family and friends.

What is one fun fact about you?

While studying abroad two summers ago in Thailand, I had the opportunity to visit a local non-profit elephant sanctuary where I fed and bathed a momma elephant that was saved from cruel torture and exploitation.

The strength and resilience of my mother and sister are my biggest inspirations. Despite what life throws at them, they always manage to push through and see the other side.

What are your goals after college?

I’m taking a year off before I begin working towards my master’s degree. During this year I hope to start working with youth in any capacity.

Which fictional character is most like yourself?

Olivia Benson from Law & Order SVU because she is a fierce woman who never gives up on anyone and is willing to do anything to protect people who’ve been harmed.

What is one fun fact about you?

I have an obsession with Domino’s Pizza and for a while my twitter was dedicated to my love for them. I’ve also tried to be sponsored by Domino’s, but that has yet to happen. I’m hopeful!

David Minsub Choe Major: Advertising Minor: Business Year: Senior

How/Why do you want to change the world?

Being the smartest creatures on planet earth, the possibilities are endless. We are given unbelievable resources, an influx of unique characters with so many wonders yet to be answered. I think it’s our role as human beings to utilize what we’ve been granted and to live to the fullest so we can answer the questions that drive our curiosity.

Who is your biggest role model and why?

My dad. The older I get, I really respect my dad and I see how he’s a strong man with values that I really look up to.

What are your goals after college?

Help story-tell the true narrative of Asian Americans and to help other Asian Americans to find their true voice.

Which fictional character is most like yourself?

Trenton Goodman Major: Cinema Studies Year: Senior

How/Why do you want to change the world?

I want to change the perception of how we see veterans in film and television. The veteran population is infinitely more than mental illness. We are first generation students, full-time workers, parents, LGBTQIA, community-builders, activists, animal lovers and so much more.

What are you proud to have been involved with at UO?

The veteran community and the Cinema Studies program have been nothing short of wonderful, especially since the university is four times larger than my hometown. Once I found my footing, I felt the love from both communities while working towards what I want to focus on when I finish school.

Who is your biggest role model and why?

Jennifer Esparza was the former Peer Advisors for Veteran Education (PAVE) Team Leader, which is the position I currently hold. In many ways, she was a tenacious leader, an empathetic friend, and a resplendent mentor. A thank you to individuals like this will never be enough. The only way to truly thank them is to succeed beyond all expectations.

What is one fun fact about you? I have a Zumba certification.

What are your goals after college?

I plan to continue research on the veteran identity in film and television while staying involved with the community at large. Representation is important in media. We need to create a voice and vision to make sure it’s accurate.

Which fictional character is most like yourself?

The troublemaker child is probably the closest identity I can relate to in film, so Antoine Doinel in “The 400 Blows.” I think those students are the ones with the most potential and the least understanding. You never really know what someone is struggling with at home but given the opportunity, they can shine.

What is one fun fact about you?

I bought my first camera in 2014 and learned to film in early 2015. Since then, I have won 2 awards in photography and 2 for film.

King Green-Newton

Major: Political Science, Sociology Year: Senior How/Why do you want to change the world?

Have you seen what’s been going on lately? I mean, Flint still doesn’t have clean water (and I doubt they will by the time this is published). Our world is in need of profound change. Personally, I want to help make the world a better place for black and queer individuals, to help foster a world where they feel capable of anything and where they feel their life matters. I hope to inspire those around me to lead with love.

What are you proud to have been involved with at UO? My work with Intersectional Events, an event planning team out of the Center for Student Involvement, makes me very proud. We kept busy, educating first year LGBTQ+ students on their campus resources, giving the keynote address at the 2017 TeachIn, and hosting Academy Award winner James Ivory for a talkback after screening his film Call Me By Your Name at the annual Queer Film Festival. I’m so proud of the work we did to enrich our campus community

Who is your biggest role model and why?

Barack Hussein Obama II. He’s so intelligent, competent, and not to mention handsome. But mostly, I love this guy because he showed black children everywhere that they truly are capable of anything they put their mind to. And in a world where that can be so easily forgotten, it’s critical to have such a towering figure to serve as reminder.

What are your goals after college?

I hope to go to law school after I finish my undergrad. I am interested in civil rights and politics. I’m currently studying for the LSAT so send good vibes.

Which fictional character is most like yourself?

Daenerys Targaryen. She’s passionate, she’s ambitious, she’s a conqueror, and most importantly, she doesn’t let anyone block her shine. Remember: “I’m no ordinary woman! My dreams come true!”? I felt that. If not Daenerys then definitely like... a Magikarp or something...

What is one fun fact about you?

I can make a weird popping noise with my ears! It’s really loud and jarring! I love it.

Kennedy Harris

Major: Business Administration Minor: French Year: Junior How/Why do you want to change the world?

I am proud to be a woman of color and hope to encourage and inspire others to not simply sit back and silently react to injustices and systematic flaws, but to stand up for what they believe and be the change they wish to see.

What are you proud to have been involved with at UO? I am proud to be an ambassador for the Peace Corps, a peer mentor for minority freshmen navigating their way through the pre-business program, and the president of my sorority, Delta Gamma.

Who is your biggest role model and why?

I always struggle to choose between my parents, so I’ll say that as a unit they are my biggest role model. My mom, similar to myself, can never say “no” to a leadership opportunity, as painful as the workload ahead may be. My dad is a go-getter and actively seeks opportunities to help others reach their full potential. Together, they’re a powerful team that makes me proud to be their daughter.

What are your goals after college?

I’m hoping to work in the music industry doing A&R work to connect artists with record labels. Ultimately, my dream is to create my own artistic label that focuses on the support of female artists, and to one day deliver a TED Talk...that’d be the life.

Which fictional character is most like yourself?

Mulan!!! Not only is she Chinese — the first Disney princess to whom I could relate— but she is strong and stands up for what she believes is right, even if that means putting her own interests aside.

What is one fun fact about you?

I kind of like Harry Potter. I have 2 wands, a tattoo of the stars on the corner of every page in the novels, a Marauder’s Map, and a Gryffindor robe even though, unfortunately, I’m a Hufflepuff.

Christopher Hieb Major: Advertising Year: Junior

How/Why do you want to change the world?

What are you proud to have been involved with at UO?

There’s only so much I can do to change the world with advertising because in my opinion world changing should be left up to the Malala Yousafzai’s of the world. However, I hope to continue the social change around LGBT rights and other social and world issues through my work in advertising as best as I can. During this last year, I earned the opportunity to be on Ad Team, which is a student run competitive advertising agency. It was one of the most challenging and stressful things I have ever done, but it was extremely rewarding. Luckily next year I’ll be given the role of being a director along with 4 amazing women.

This question is hard for me to answer because I’ve never done anything with a conscious goal of ‘changing the world’ in mind. In my case, I think that this recognition may have been an unintended result of pursuing my passions and interests. Finding ways to make this a viable option for everyone regardless of background would likely have the same result. A bit obvious, but absolutely the music program. Both because of how much I have grown as a musician and also because of the instructors/colleagues that I have met and who have provided me with such incredible opportunities.

Who is your biggest role model and why?

I’ve been saying the same answer for years but this is a very easy question for me. My sister has always been this badass woman who basically shows me how life works. She’s 2 and a half years older than me however sometimes I think she’s 10 years older than me. Her maturity and work ethic is beyond impressive.

I don’t know that I have one single role model. However, I have always looked up to women who excel in their professions (especially ones that are dominated by men). For a long time I don’t think I understood how crucial witnessing female representation was in the fields I wanted to pursue was, and the amount of personal growth I have achieved/am working towards as a result is something I will always be grateful for.

What are your goals after college?

Who is your biggest role model and why?

I plan on working at an advertising agency or directly with a company and do what’s called in house work. I want to be a media planner so I basically research placements and locations that ads would be most successful, I figure out when to use those specific placements and then I calculate how much it’ll cost.

Which fictional character is most like yourself?

I like to think I am a combination of Jimmy, Carl and Sheen from Jimmy Neutron. I have my moments of intelligence and that’s when my Jimmy comes out. Then sometimes I can be nerdy and awkward and that when Carl says hi. And then I can be a fun and unique friend outside of the classroom and that’s Sheen.

What is one fun fact about you?

I’m on a constant search for the best onion ring in the world. I’ll order them anywhere because they’re obviously the best food ever invented. So far, a restaurant by my house in southern California called Arroyo Trabuco has the crown.

Maddi Krafve

Major: Saxophone Performance Year: Junior

If I can find a way to have even an ounce of financial stability and be able to maintain my pursuit of musicianship (and everything that entails) then I will be just fine.

Which fictional character is most like yourself?

Chidi from “The Good Place.” Michael and Janet on occasion as well. Honestly, every character from that show.

What is one fun fact about you?

I start out half of my sentences with “have you seen that vine where...”

Jena Kunimune Major: Psychology Minor: Spanish Year: Junior

How/Why do you want to change the world?

I would love to work as a clinical psychologist and help people overcome trauma and mental health issues. I’d love to do my part to destigmatize mental health illnesses and reaffirm its importance in our society. I would like my work to be crosscultural which is why I am minoring in Spanish.

What are you proud to have been involved with at UO?

I am proud to be involved with the UO Exchange and Sponsored Programs working as the program assistant. It is a very rewarding experience assisting exchange students from all over the world. In addition, I am very proud to be a part of the Brain Development Lab as well as the Mayr Cognition Lab. I’ve gained great research experience in two different fields of psychology, and have enjoyed working with participants of different backgrounds.

Who is your biggest role model and why?

My friends, family, teachers and employers are my biggest role models who have supported me throughout my journey.

What are your goals after college?

I hope to attend a clinical psychology doctorate program after I graduate in 2019. My goal is to have my own clinical psychology practice and work with people of diverse backgrounds and assist with mental health care. I’d especially like to focus on working with adoptees as I am adopted from China.

Which fictional character is most like yourself?

Alexandra Lau

Major: Community and Regional Planning and Architecture Year: Master’s Student

Danielle LeBlanc Major: Cinema Studies Year: Senior

How/Why do you want to change the world?

What are you proud to have been involved with at UO?

I want to merge new building technology with indigenous Native Hawaiian land stewardship to promote healthier and more equitable development in my hometown, Honolulu. I am proud to be involved with the Peer Exchange, a student support group for students from underrepresented minorities.

Who is your biggest role model and why?

Roxanne Gay, writer and professor, is an incredible inspiration to me. Her complex writings deal with issues related to race, ethnicity, sexuality, body image, and so much more. Her voice allows other women and minorities to feel that they too have a voice.

What are your goals after college?

My first goal is to find out how to get my cat, Potato, to Southern California without her hating me forever! On a more serious note, my five-year goal is to become a licensed architect.

Which fictional character is most like yourself?

I’ve always felt a connection with Francie Nolan, the main character in Betty Smith’s “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.”

What is one fun fact about you?

My first job, at the age of 15, was as a pasta cook and baker for a small Italian restaurant in Honolulu.

I want to change the world by empowering young women to use their voice, because I believe that sharing personal stories has the power to impact others and create change. I am most proud of creating the Women and Film group on campus this year. By creating a safe space, I have helped to cultivate self confidence and technical skills for women, nonbinary, and trans filmmakers. My biggest role model is my mom because she is smart, funny, and strong. She loves unconditionally and always finds a way to give back to others.

What are your goals after college?

After college I am moving to Los Angeles to pursue a career in film.

I am most like Terry Jeffords from “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” because I am an organized hard worker; though I may seem tough, I am also sensitive and maternal.

Major: International Studies: Cross-Cultural Communication and Education Year: Senior How/Why do you want to change the world?

I don’t think I can change the whole world, but I want to at least have people around me to feel happy and supported. As my undergraduate career here at the UO has enriched and empowered me, I personally believe in education and more specifically international education. I plan to pursue a master’s degree and eventually a Ph.D. in higher education and then make changes and empower more through education.

What are you proud to have been involved with at UO?

The Career Center, ISCA (International Student Career Alliance), ICSP (International Cultural Service Program Scholarship), IBA (International Business Association student club) and Lundquist College of Business Career Services.

Who is your biggest role model and why?

My father who works hard to bring the family from our tiny village to Baoshan city, and then now the capital of Yunnan, Kunming city. He also supports me to chase my study abroad dream here at the UO and later to England. He works for the people in Yunnan so hard to have more citizens have better lives. Every day he is impacting me positively and supporting me to where I want to go. He is, definitely, my biggest role model.

What are your goals after college?

I will be going to Cambridge, England to pursuit my MPhil in Education degree. I will try my best to meet the requirement at Cambridge and continue my Ph.D. there. After achieving academic goals, my dream/plan is to return back to Yunnan, China. My current thoughts are both teaching, to make changes in and through Higher Education and also running a social enterprise which will hopefully support more and more people with ideas and dreams!

What is one fun fact about you?

I speak 3 types of Chinese dialects: Baoshan dialect, Kunming dialect, and Standard (Mandarin).

Yasi Milani

Major: Human Physiology Minor: Business Year: Senior How/Why do you want to change the world?

62 Millions of girls aren’t in school. My parents gave up everything to move across the globe to prevent me from being one of them. I am not the smartest, nor the hardest working yet I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to not only attend college but soon graduate from it. My goal is to use this privilege to fight for those who weren’t as lucky as me.

What are you proud to have been involved with at UO?

Starting Majesty, an online publication for Women of Color to be the narrator of their own stories has been my proudest accomplishment. I remember sitting at our first meeting after putting the team together and realizing I would probably never been sitting at another boardroom table with all minorities in charge.

Who is your biggest role model and why?

Kate Stoysich (my boss) and Stephanie Tabibian (my scholarship advisor). They’re the closest thing to superwoman I’ve found since my mom.

What are your goals after college?

To take a year off to recover my brain and hopefully end up in a Doctor of Physical Therapy/Masters of Public Health dual degree.

Which fictional character is most like yourself?

To be honest, I have never identified with any fictional characters because they never looked like me. I asked a few of my friends though and these were their responses: Donna Pinciotti, Daria Morgendorffer and Wonder Woman.

What is one fun fact about you?

I can’t go a day without peanut butter. Seriously.

Michel Guadalupe Nunez Lopez Major: Planning, Public Policy and Management Year: Junior

How/Why do you want to change the world?

My passion for public health and health policy are tied to the idea that in order to create progressive members of society it’s important to change systematic barriers that prevent people from having access to basic human rights that allow them to get ahead in life. I believe everyone should have equal access to education, healthcare, nutritious food, and the ability to feel safe and included in society. My mother has always worked very hard to ensure that my siblings and I understand that every single privilege we have, such as our education, is one more reason why it is our duty to live a life in service to others.

What are you proud to have been involved with at UO?

I am president of the Student Community Organization and a member of the Student Advisory Board in the PPPM School, membership coordinator and recruitment lead of the Student Health Advisory Committee, a Wayne Morse Scholar, a peer mentor for PathwayOregon students, and I love my two jobs at the EMU as a Guest Services attendant and as a student receptionist at the Administration office

Who is your biggest role model and why?

My aunt Maria Santa because she is one of the most intelligent and hardworking individuals I have ever met. She works for a low-income high school in Mexico and has devoted her life to ensure that all of her students pursue a path of academic success. My favorite memory of her is when she taught me how to read, I remember crying in frustration because I felt I was never going to learn, but she pushed me the way she still pushes me today and engraved in my head that in order to achieve great things in life I would always have to work incredibly hard and never give up. If I ever become half of the women she is I will consider my life a successful one.

What are your goals after college?

My goals after college are to pursue a public health fellowship abroad that lasts a year or two and go to graduate school right after to pursue a Masters in Public Health.

Which fictional character is most like yourself?

I would say I am most like Kung Fu Panda because I like to form a part of things bigger than myself and I would consider myself as someone who always aims to be kind to everyone I meet. I also like to laugh and have fun along the way because it’s important to live in the moment and be happy if you can be.

What is one fun fact about you?

I used to have a cow named Chella, which is the nickname Michel’s go by in Mexico, and I can vibrate my tongue.

Rima Pandit

Major: Human Physiology Year: Freshman How/Why do you want to change the world?

Passionate to utilize acquired knowledge toward helping people in their times of medical needs, I am pursuing studies at University of Oregon to practice as a General Physician. I have set a goal to join hands with dedicated services of ‘Doctors Without Borders’ to counsel, educate and remedy by bringing awareness with preventative care, especially to underprivileged women. I believe proactive efforts to increase awareness with compassionate, reasonable and holistic approaches will strengthen communities, so that everyone will grow stronger.

What are you proud to have been involved with at UO?

Our University offers a plethora of opportunities with excellent learning for every student to grow their fullest potential. My enthusiasm in Chemistry and Mathematics grew in team efforts with Dr. Cathy Wong for research in spectroscopic analysis of promising organic materials with photophysical properties beneficial to mankind. Likewise, as a Career Center Student Advisory Board Member under auspices of Ms. Chelsey Augustyniak helps build horizons even for other fellow students, with a potential to offer knowhow to other Oregon Universities.

Who is your biggest role model and why?

Emblematic nobility personified by Mother Teresa inspires me for her tireless efforts with selfless services to underprivileged society. Her care for shunned and dying people has been outstanding, and a powerful reminder in bringing forth the advances in science, health care for basic facilities to remedy and offer compassion. Beating adversities, she has set an ideal to follow. Her tireless efforts call for newer generations like mine as invitation to become conscious of our natural duties to care for others.

Alex Pear

Major: Political Science Year: Senior How/Why do you want to change the world?

I want to work on creating more efficient and sustainable cities specifically in areas where populations are challenged by lack of resources. I want to work on policies that effectively improve economic circumstances and develop opportunities for entire communities.

What are you proud to have been involved with at UO? I am most proud to be a part of ASUO through the ASUO Senate and EMU Board. Becoming a part of the allocation process of student funds towards vital campus programming has been very rewarding.

Who is your biggest role model and why?

Steve Aoki is my biggest role model. Steve is an innovator and always striving to create a better experience himself and for his audiences. The level of passion he has for music and performing is what I aim to have in whatever I end up doing.

Hao Tan

Major: Human Physiology Year: Senior How/Why do you want to change the world?

One day, I hope to become a practicing physician and work with healthcare policy makers to provide more accessible healthcare services for disadvantaged communities.

What are you proud to have been involved with at UO?

Throughout my undergraduate experience, I’ve been heavily involved with programs that offer academic support to lowSES grade school students and also inspire them to pursue post-secondary education opportunities. I’ve been a part of OYSP, SAIL, and ASPIRE which are organizations that do tremendous work for student in the surrounding Eugene and Springfield communities. I encourage students to get involved with similar opportunities and make a difference!

Who is your biggest role model and why?

My Dad. He’s taught me that nothing can beat a strong work ethic and grit.

What are your goals after college?

What is one fun fact about you?

To travel to all 50 states by the end of 2019. (Currently at 29/50). I always identified with Pleakley from Lilo and Stitch. My favorite food is Clam Chowder.

Short term goal: apply to medical school. Long term goal: avoid taco bell. Tom Haverford – according to a buzzfeed quiz.

On average, I lose a water bottle every 3 months.

What are your goals after college?

I have set my roadmap to immerse myself with the breadth of knowledge in medicine, to devote for a noble cause with in-depth reasoning, isolating root-causes, and deploying medicinal treatments. I believe newer vistas of information will help me position myself as a General Physician to bring forth holistic healing. I intend to carry forth my acquired experiences for national services by joining hands with US Army, Red Cross and World Health Organization, similar to services of ‘Doctors Without Borders’.

Which fictional character is most like yourself?

I am overwhelmed by the depiction of Walt Disney’s character of Merida, the Princess, in their animation movie ‘Brave’. She is the perfect characterization of a crusader who stands for truth, virtues, and for the diverse peoples of her father’s kingdom. She establishes herself in her efforts in the path of truth and justice, and tirelessly refrains from atrocities arising of any underpinnings of medieval chauvinistic societal norms. She represents boldness, skillful talents, and leadership that is second to none.

How/Why do you want to change the world?

I want to change the world one person at a time, by helping people know they matter and that someone cares about them. I once heard that there is no world, there are just 7.5 billion understandings of it. So, to change how one person sees their potential and worth, to help them feel how much they are cared about, and empower them to create change in their own lives, I think that’s world changing.

What are you proud to have been involved with at UO?

IntroDUCKtion, hands down! Being an SOSer was extremely rewarding, I loved being able to engage with new students and talk with them about everything from classes and life in the res halls, to consent and how we, as Ducks, can come together to support and respect each other. Also, I’m very introverted and the entire experience was almost completely outside my comfort zone, it was a summer of challenging myself in new ways.

Who is your biggest role model and why?

I can’t pick just one! My family members Teddy Gerrish, Elijah Stucki, and Arian Borycki are some of my biggest role models. Around campus I look up to Justice Martinez, Amy Schenk, Caylnne Thomas, Wynter Baca, Sammi Wong, Alex Shadle, Liz Arnold, and Hunter Dotson. They each, in their own way, show hard work and dedication, a kindness and caring for others, and are examples of how I want to live my life.

What are your goals after college?

Grad school! I’m currently researching different PhD programs and preparing to take the GRE.

Which fictional character is most like yourself?

I identify a lot with Will Hunting, from the movie “Good Will Hunting.”

What is one fun fact about you?

I’m transgender. A lot of people know that about me and a lot don’t. It’s a fun fact because for a long time I was ashamed of being transgender, and I’m now at a place where I can accept and love myself for who I am.

Julia Wong

Major: Business Administration; Concentration in Marketing Year: Senior How/Why do you want to change the world?

I would like to reduce some anger and sadness in the world. Spreading love and not hate can really make a difference in everyone’s lives. My goal is to make one person a little happier and smile each day.

What are you proud to have been involved with at UO?

I am most proud of being involved in planning events with Parent and Family Programs. Not only did the program help shape who I am today, but I’m honored to be a part of these families college experience and have been able to help ease the transition. I have met some pretty incredible coworkers, peers, mentors, families, and students who have made my college experience so special.

Who is your biggest role model and why?

My grandpa Pat Callis. Not only is he 80 years old and can still out-run and climb anyone in my family, but he’s shown so much dedication and sacrifice for the people he loves. I admire that he found his passions in life so early and has stuck with them all this time, while also sacrificing amazing opportunities to ensure the best for his family. I wouldn’t be who I am today without him!

What are your goals after college?

Travel the world! And find a job in event coordination and marketing.

Which fictional character is most like yourself?

I always felt like I related to Prim in the Hunger Games series. She was a bit quiet and shy, but very friendly and loyal once she opened up to someone.

What is one fun fact about you?

I am a member of the UO Weightlifting team and I recently competed at University Nationals!

The Student Alumni Association, a student organization housed in the UO Alumni Association, focuses on actively engaging students during their time on campus, understanding that it will be these engaged students that springboard into being active alumni. This inspired the UO Alumni Association to participate in these awards. The Emerald and the UO Alumni Association are proud to be able to bring this recognition to outstanding Ducks each year who have displayed the potential to change the world. Students are and will always be the University of Oregon’s greatest assets. Students’ abilities and contributions to the university and surrounding community are an important key to the success of the entire university. These students’ accomplishments have distinguished them as exemplary Ducks who are already making a difference and contributing to the university’s motto, “Mens Agitat Molem.” Our 25 recipients will continue to make a difference long after they graduate and become ambassadors and advocates for the University of Oregon.
