his summer, a total solar eclipse will cross the country, enveloping it for mere seconds in utter darkness. For the first time in U.S. history, the eclipse will be visible exclusively in America.

The eclipse will occur on August 21, 2017. For a few moments, parts of the nation will be completely enclosed in darkness as the sun becomes completely blocked out by the moon. All of North America will experience a partial eclipse, but only some states will get to witness the total eclipse – and Oregon will be one of the lucky states getting a glimpse at the total eclipse. A total solar eclipse, also known as a total eclipse of the sun, occurs when the moon passes through a rare trajectory. This path places the moon directly between the sun and the Earth, entirely covering the visible surface of the sun. The phenomenon is a brief one, however – the eclipse usually only lasts for around two minutes before the moon lets the sun peek through once more. Observers of the eclipse will only have this brief window to experience the event in its entirety. In Oregon, anticipation for the eclipse has been rampant. Part of this enthusiasm is due to our state’s offer of advantageous eclipse viewing: Madras, Oregon is on the list of the premier viewing spots in the entire country. While areas along the coast are a gamble due to the possibility of marine clouds, interior areas of the state are among the nation’s top weather prospects for late August. If you want to camp out for the eclipse, it’s a good idea to book your reservation now. The best way to find camping sites available in Oregon is through the website ReserveAmerica. The site provides online campsite reservations for private, state and federal campgrounds throughout the United States. And through ReserveAmerica makes it easy to find sites, the tricky part is finding one that isn’t already booked; these reservations tend to be filled months in advance. Since the eclipse isn’t until August, you still have an opportunity to find your ideal spot to view the eclipse – but act fast if you plan on doing so. Remember, central Oregon is your best bet for clear skies on the night of the eclipse. Try to find sites located in the area around Madras for best viewing results. PA G E 1 0

ross-country adventures are daunting, even for the most seasoned travelers. However, it’s possible to nurture your adventurous spirit without adding thousands of miles to your car, and without breaking the bank. If a day trip is the getaway you desire, it’s time to make a playlist, pack your car and head for I-5. Let’s check out all that Eugene, Portland and the nooks in between have to offer.

Eugene Food is fuel. Prepare for your day-long adventure with breakfast at Morning Glory Cafe. A self-proclaimed vegetarian establishment, Morning Glory Cafe serves up delicious dishes for affordable prices. Try the classic Morning Medley, which features two eggs, herbed potatoes and toast. The cafe also has an impressive list of vegan options, such as Three Sisters. This plate features a sky-high pile of potatoes and fresh vegetables, as well as a topping of your choice. I recommend topping it with nutritional yeast sauce. Morning Glory Cafe is located at 450 Willamette Street and is open seven days a week, from 7:30 am- 3:30 pm. Next stop: coffee. Check out Full City Cafe, located at 842 Pearl Street, and get your caffeine fix before hitting the road. With an array of pastries and an expansive selection of drinks, you’ll leave feeling ready to take on the world. Full City Cafe is open from 7:00 am- 6:00 pm Monday through Saturday, and from 7:00 am- 5:00 pm on Sunday. Now that you’re caffeinated, let’s check out our next stop.

The In-Between Pull off of I-5 and head into Salem for a springtime rendezvous at Schreiner’s Iris Gardens. You’ll find yourself enchanted by acres of blooming, vibrant flowers and rolling fields of green grass. The display gardens’ peak bloom season is during late May. You can also purchase bulbs, flowers and various other items at the gift shop, or attend one of the many art shows or workshops offered. If I-5 traffic has got you down, visit the beautiful gardens and reclaim your calm. Schreiner’s Iris Gardens are located at 3625 Quinaby Road in Salem. During bloom season, the gardens are open from dusk until dawn.

Portland It’s time for some comfort food at Pine State Biscuits, located at 1100 SE Division Street. Although the entire menu is enticing, The Reggie and The McIsley biscuit sandwiches are especially delicious. The Reggie features fried chicken, bacon and cheese topped with gravy. The McIsley consists of fried chicken, pickles, mustard and Bee Local Honey. Pine State Biscuits is open seven days a week, from 7:00 am- 3:00 pm.

Roadtrip:

Before heading back to Eugene, check out the best of Portland’s thrifting scene at Artifact: Creative Recycle. You’ll find recycled furniture, home fixtures, artwork, clothing, jewelry, oddities and more. It’s the perfect place to save money on summer clothes without sacrificing style. If you’re looking to add a stylish, indie flair to your living space, this is the place to shop. Artifact: Creative Recycle is located at 3630 SE Division Street, and is open from 10:00 am- 8:00 pm, seven days a week.

Oregon’s Top 5 Falls

scape the Willamette Valley’s summer heat by exploring raging waterfalls and mossy, old-growth forests. Oregon is home to many impressive falls, each defined by their own unique characteristics. Whether you prefer roaring rapids or gentle streams, this beautiful state offers an expansive variety of crystalline blue cascades that are sure to wow even the most seasoned waterfall explorers. Sahalie Falls Visit Sahalie Falls for beautiful views without a rigorous hike. The falls are located an hour and 20 minutes away from Eugene via OR-126, making this natural area a perfect spot for a weekend day trip. Once you arrive at the Sahalie Falls parking lot and information center, you can choose to walk to the viewing deck for a great glimpse of the falls. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can choose to follow the relaxing 2.6 mile hiking loop, which will give you a closer look at the falls and the rapids below it.

Toketee Falls If you’re looking to snap your next Instagram picture, take a trip to this waterfall. You’ll find a beautiful, two-tiered cascade nestled between towering basalt cliffs and green moss. Toketee Falls is located in the Umpqua National Forest, about an hour east of Roseburg. Upon your arrival to the natural area, you’ll embark on a mellow .8 mile hike that will lead you to the falls and the thrashing water beneath it.

Tumalo Falls Tumalo Falls offers its visitors an unforgettable excursion in the heart of the Deschutes National Forest, located in Bend. This waterfall makes a pronounced entrance as it crashes between large rock formations and churns into a trail of rapids. The 5.7 mile hike to the falls is scenic, family-friendly and accessible to hikers of all skill levels. There are also ample opportunities to get closer views of the falls, allowing hikers to snap the perfect commemorative photograph.

Ramona Falls Venture off the beaten path. Although this waterfall is often overlooked, you won’t want to miss out on it this summer. Ramona Falls features many smaller cascades of water, all of which rush down moss-covered basalt formationsit’s located in the Mount Hood National Forest near Rhododendron. The hike to the falls, beginning at the base of Mount Hood, is 6.9 miles long- it’s considered to be a moderately strenuous path, and can be especially difficult for those not accustomed to high altitudes. Expect to spend four to six hours hiking, exploring the falls and checking out the surrounding natural areas.

Salt Creek Falls Salt Creek Falls is located in Oakridge, making it a prime destination for University of Oregon students. It’s in close proximity to Eugene, it’s easily accessible and of course, it’s breathtakingly beautiful. When you arrive at the site, you’ll find an observation deck located near the parking lot. You may choose to admire the falls from that point, or you can choose to embark on an easy .5 mile hike to the waterfall. There is a $5.00 day-use fee required to visit the falls, so come prepared and ready to relax to the soothing sound of rapids. PA G E 1 2

Exploring Southern Oregon

hat do you think of when you hear “Southern Oregon”? Cows? Shakespeare festivals, maybe? Just being really close to California? While all those expectations are accurate, the region also sports great natural beauty. If you’re looking for natural wonders, Southern Oregon is a prime destination. While the Oregon Coast and the metropolitan Portland area may be the state’s more famous destinations, Southern Oregon pulls its own weight with landscapes and views that are among the nation’s most majestic destinations. If you’ll be in Oregon this summer, you’ll want to add these spots to your travel list.

Crater Lake

The Table Rocks

Another stroke of natural beauty in Southern Oregon is Crater Lake, one of the 7 Wonders of Oregon. The water at Crater Lake has to be seen to be believed -- its depth and blue hue are truly unlike any other body of water that you’ll ever see. As the deepest lake in North America, Crater Lake is surrounded by cliffs that stand nearly 2,000 feet in the air. Two islands sit in the lake: Wizard Island, which is the larger of the two and is formed from a cinder cone, and Phantom Ship, which is named for its resemblance to a ghostly ship -- especially on foggy, low-light days. If you’re lucky, you might catch sight of the century-old floating tree stump known as the Old Man of the Lake which floats up to the top of the the lake on certain days.

The Table Rocks are just one natural wonder of the region. Also known as Oregon’s Islands in the Sky, the Table Rocks are prominent landmarks that get their name for their expansive plateaus that offer breathtaking views of Oregon landscape. Formed by a volcanic eruption roughly seven million years ago, the land has eroded over the ages in a way that left behind two natural plateaus that are unlike any other geographic feature of the state. The two features are known as Lower Table Rock and Upper Table Rock, and feature over 200 varieties of wildflowers and wildlife. The Table Rocks are located near Medford, which is about a three hour drive from Eugene. The Table Rocks are protected by the BLM and The Nature Conservancy, so these natural spectacles are here to stay.

During the summer, Crater Lake is a great place to hike, backpack and camp. The perimeter of the lake is a beautiful vista to trek through, and boat tours are offered for those who want to get closer to the water. T H U R S D AY, M AY 1 8 , 2 0 1 7
