THE HAYWARD MAGIC SHOE COMES ALIVE! STORY BEGINS Hayward had a fascination with shoes that began long before he arrived in Eugene. Before one of his professional races, Hayward came out for his warmups wearing striped socks over his shoes. As soon as the gun went off, Hayward ripped off the socks, revealing a new pair of shoes with spikes on the soles — one of the first known pairs of spiked shoes to ever be used in a track meet. He won by a landslide.
From the first spiked shoes to record breaking moments, read all about Hayward’s rich history in Hayward Field: Legends and Legacy
During the race, a number of nearby retail stores were robbed by a suspect who’d climbed in through the roof. Because of his spiked shoes, Hayward was briefly held and questioned by the local police. He was released soon after, free of any charges.

s the weather gets warmer, the clouds start to disappear and the flowers start to bloom, leaving those of us with green thumbs a little twitchy. Whether you’re a newbie to the home agriculture scene or a seasoned Yard Crasher, the spotting of green sprouts pushing above ground is equally exciting. Check out these tips on starting your first garden, how to grow easy plants as a first-timer and even a few suggestions on where to head if you don’t have a luscious backyard that’s suited to gardening.

Start-Up Garden Tips Pick Your Plot Wisely
If you’re starting in your backyard or in a few miscellaneous pots you found at a garage sale, the rule is the same: location, location, location. No matter how good your soil is, or how bright the light can be (and vice versa) plants need a healthy, happy environment all around to thrive. This is especially true if you’re looking to grow fruits or vegetables: even a small step in the wrong direction can lead to a sterile plant. But fear not: it’s easier to do than it sounds. Pay attention to lighting, temperature and water exposure when choosing your location. Bonus Tip: Most seed packets or plant identifier tabs have basic information on what the species needs or best thrives in.
Know Your Plant Better Than You Know Yourself
Whether you’re tackling simple daisies or attempting a full-blown tomato vine, the whole process will come easier with a few days of research. After identifying the location for your future garden and understanding the conditions you’re working with, you can better pick and choose which plants will thrive and which will… well, die. A quick Google search of whatever you’re hoping to grow will give basic care instructions and give you a solid idea of whether or

not it will be successful. Also, try consulting your local nurseries or online forums for tips from seasoned gardeners or advice on which plants really thrive in the local environment. Bonus Tip: Perennials come back every year after completing their seasonal cycle, whereas Annuals die after their blooms have finished.
Plants Everyone Can Grow
Mint: This delicious-smelling herb is a perfect addition to any garden and will flourish with next to no attention in any given Oregon environment. Rip a few leaves off to add to your water, dinners or even as a fun garnish for desserts. Strawberries: They’re naturally occuring in the wild, so it’s pretty darn simple to pick up a flat from a local nursery and throw a few strawberry plants in the ground or a small pot. While they can be a bit stingy with the actual fruit, the foliage is fragrant and most plants will produce at least a handful of juicy berries. Petunias: These gorgeous flowers are a garden classic and come in as many colors as you can imagine. The blooms last for months until the cold finally shrinks them up, but they are hardy as a flower can be and will add a nice pop of color to your plot. Lettuce: If you’re a huge fan of salads and hate paying for them, lettuce is here to save the day. This easy veggie is super simple to harvest (just pick the leaves!) and will provide you with fresh lettuce for weeks right outside your front door.

Local Gardens Eugene Community Gardens
There are six designated community gardens throughout the City of Eugene and the Community Gardens Program: Amazon, Mathews, Whiteaker, River House, Alton Baker and Skinner City Farm. The plots sell at three yearly price points of 300 square feet for $60, 600 for $100, and a raised bed at the Alton Baker location for $25. Keep in mind that these prices include watering and access to proper gardening tools! Apply online at the city website or contact Amy Meeker for questions and inquiries.
Seed to Supper
Hosted by Food For Lane County, the six-week Seed to Supper course is an unparalleled tool for new gardeners to learn crucial tools and strategies for Oregon gardening. Students will learn how to cultivate, maintain, and later harvest with the help of trained
volunteer educators who know their way around. Oh, and did we mention it’s totally free? After completion, you leave with seed starters, organic compost and whole load of skilled garden knowhow. Grove Community Garden
If you’re stuck in a dorm and aren’t satisfied with house plants, the Student Sustainability Center has your summer gardening plans laid out and ready to rock n’ grow. Located close to campus on 18th St. and Moss, the garden partners with the Urban Farm and provides affordable ($25 for a year) student plots for all your outdoor gardening needs. Apply for a plot online at the Student Sustainability Center website (scroll all the way down, it’s hidden but it’s there).

The Cinema Studies major is an intersection of intellectual study and creative work. Students develop collaborative skills, use a broad array of media to communicate ideas, and gain a contextual appreciation of how various cultures tell their stories via f ilm, television, and new media.
Coursework
Students take a diverse array of courses in history, theory, criticism, and aesthetics as well as in digital production.
Collaboration
Coursework spans the College of Ar ts and Sciences, the School of Journalism and Communication, and the College of Design. Nearly one-third of Cinema Studies students are also double majors.

Whether you’re preparing for a long relaxing summer or
gearing up for the next school year already, follow this survival guide to find uber-classic tips revamped with safety information and campus guidelines related to COVID-19 so you can have a fantastic and safe year!
GET VACCINATED
As students return to largely in-person instruction in the fall, UO announced that “students who learn, work, or live on any UO campus location” must be fully vaccinated before returning to campus. Distribution and access is becoming more widely available across Lane County, and more of the population becomes immune every day as folks do the responsible thing and get their immunizations. If you haven’t already, go get that shot and help save the world!

CLEAN, CLEAN AND CLEAN AGAIN
Now more than ever, it’s critical to make sure that the place you’ll be living in is thoroughly clean and tidy. Not only does this help you stay on track and organized, but it also helps prevent the spread of COVID-19 and your chances of receiving it. In addition, making sure that you yourself are practicing good personal hygiene is essential for protecting yourself from all kinds of sickness! UO has added portable stations across campus for students to wash their hands to make things extra easy.
GET TO KNOW YOUR PROFESSORS
We can’t stress this enough. Way too many students don’t take advantage of office hours, where you can recieve one-on-one help from your professors—something that is extremely valuable considering the majority of them have very busy schedules. Developing relationships with your professors can lead to a whole variety of beneficial opportunities. To meet UO’s recommended guidelines, many professors will most likely plan on their office hours to be virtual over the summer, so be sure to check on the

class syllabus for open times or personal appointment information before the term starts.
SET A SUSTAINABLE SCHEDULE
With the introduction of returning to mostly in-person classes, it’s important to allow ourselves time to adjust to that new schedule again and also allow room to keep ourselves safe and comfortable during that transition. Remember to take mental health breaks when you need them and don’t overload yourself from the get-go if you can avoid it. Talk to your advisor about what feels right for you and plan your terms accordingly to get the most out of the experience and take care of yourself at the same time!
START BUILDING YOUR PROFESSIONAL PRESENCE RIGHT AWAY It doesn’t hurt to start building your resume early! Remote career opportunities are now available across the world, with an array of internships and jobs being advertised almost daily. Getting a
head start on your professional presence will set you apart from others while being considered for future opportunities and help you develop more relationships and connections than others. A great way to get started is create a LinkedIn profile; start connecting with and reaching out to professionals in your desired career field.
LIMIT YOUR SOCIAL INTERACTIONS AND GATHERINGS
An important aspect of going back to “normal” is the long-lost social interactions with our friends and family, and all that is still possible even with social distancing rules set in place! UO recommends that you avoid social gatherings of 10 people or more and limit your immediate contacts to people you already know. Stick to outdoor gatherings when you can (even easier with the warmer weather as summer approaches!) and remember to always keep a mask and some sanitizer on hand just in case.

Living On Campus In the residence halls, you’re close to everything. You’ll meet friends and make memories that will last a lifetime. Excited for move-in? Here are some tips to get you started.
We’ll set you up with a bed, desk, and dresser or closet. Here’s what you should bring.
Don’t double up Check in with your roommate before you move in and compare what you are bringing. You’ll avoid bringing two mini fridges, and you can create a style for your room together!
The necessities Bedding (sheets, comforter, blankets, pillows), storage containers, hangers, small desk lamp, surge protector, desk supplies, laundry basket, detergent, toiletries, towels, and clothing for all types of weather.
Get around easily Bikes are a great way to get around. Bike racks are available throughout campus and secured bike cages are next to many residence halls. Make sure to bring a U-lock and register your bike online at project529.com/Oregon.

T
his summer and fall, an exhibition showcasing works by grantees of the JSMA Black Lives Matter Artist Grant Program will open in the Harold and Arlene Schnitzer Gallery at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at the University of Oregon. Encompassing drawing, painting, video, performance, photography, installations, sculpture, and digital works, the exhibition highlights work by young and emerging artists from the Eugene area, as well as artists from Ashland and Bend. Funded by the Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation to recognize artists making work in support of Black Lives Matter, this grant program spanned the JSMAs of the University of Oregon, Portland State University, and Washington State University. A dedicated supporter of the arts, Jordan Schnitzer has collected work by Black artists
panel to pick the grant winners. The selection panel particularly sought out younger and emerging artists for whom the grant could be significant, while paying close attention to artists’ connections to the Black Lives Matter movement. Works on view reflect a variety of approaches and mediums, but most of the works are figurative and representational, with Each artist grantee received a cash award of photography and video most strongly $2,500, and the opportunity to participate represented. in the exhibition at their respective JSMA. The Student Alumni Association allows students to choose how involved they wish to be. Involvement ranges from attending our career and networking events, applying for our SAA internship, or becoming a member for the Duck rewards! “Getting involved with the SAA as a freshman really helped me get out of my comfort zone and allowed me to gain experience in a professional setting, which is something I knew very little about leaving high school,” says Audrey Lee, current Assistant Director of Membership Engagement. Audrey joined the SAA internship program at the very beginning of her freshman year and is now a senior. “Through the internship I’ve been able to meet so many new people and have been able to learn and grow as a leader, gaining skills I will be able to take with me into future jobs and into my first job this summer.” We have great opportunities in our intern and leadership program, if you really want to gain some skills and get the most out of your SAA experience. These students plan everything for the SAA and make our events happen. We have positions in alumni relations, marketing & production, leadership development, membership & engagement, and advocacy & philanthropy. Our leadership positions offer a great way to get involved on campus while gaining real-world experience to enhance your resume. The Black Alumni Network and Native Ducks Nation are among two of our affinity groups eager to network with the Student Alumni Association members. We host great spring break opportunties that allow you to visit alumni in Seattle or San Francisco, and sponsor an award with the Emerald Media Group that recognizes outstanding Ducks who will change the world each year. “Students join the SAA to build their profesional network and connect with alumni before leaving the University of Oregon,” explains Lauren Hobbs, senior and Director of Membership Engagement for the SAA who joined as a freshman. Get Connected to Nature: Outside Adventures in Eugene Written by Kelsie Heffernan
L
iving in Eugene means that you have beautiful trails, nature reserves and state parks right at your fingertips. It’s so easy (especially after the year we’ve had) to stay locked up at home, but here in Eugene there are so many adventures right outside your door, so get outside and enjoy them!
Spencer Butte:
If there’s only one hike you’ll undoubtedly go on your whole time in Eugene, it’s up Spencer Butte. A Eugene classic, this hike is only a mile to the top, a view which definitely won’t disappoint. The Butte is located on the south side of Eugene, about a 12 minute drive from campus. Hiking the Butte is a perfect free activity with friends and a great opportunity for photo-ops and memories you’ll never forget.

Silver Falls:
Silver Falls is located about an hour and a half from Eugene. This day trip offers an easy walk to a 117 foot waterfall or a 7.2 mile loop spanning 10 falls. The falls are considered one of Oregon’s most beautiful sites, and they make for some Instagram worthy pictures, too. The main hike takes you directly under the largest waterfall and out around the sparkling blue pool at the bottom.
Smith Rock:
Smith Rock is the farthest drive of the list coming in at a whopping 3 hours from Eugene, but definitely a sight worth seeing. You can choose between a variety of hikes ranging from 2 to 7 miles as well as a variety of elevation. The hike with the highest elevation, known as Misery Ridge, takes you up to the top of Smith Rock for the view of a lifetime. It’s not as miserable as it may sound, but you may want to bring some hiking boots because it can get slippery!
Ridgeline Trail System:
The Ridgeline Trail System involves many interconnected trails looping around Eugene and spanning about 12 miles total. Although still in the city, they feel secluded and serene. If you’re looking for a beautiful nature walk through the trees while staying close to home, this is perfect. Accessible on bike or via bus 73 from campus, it’s optimal for getting out for a quick hike at any time of day.
Hobbit Beach Trailhead:
About an hour and a half from Eugene, the Oregon Coast is a must-see. The Hobbit Beach Trailhead is located outside of Florence that takes you on a short hike to a secluded and (generally) private part of the Oregon Coast. The scenic drive along the coast takes you through the city of Florence (if you need any snacks!) and past the Sea Lion Caves. A trip to the beach is a perfect weekend day trip and a great opportunity to make unforgettable memories with friends.
Dorris Ranch:
Located in Springfield, Dorris Ranch is about a 10 minute drive or 20 minute bike from campus. Dorris Ranch is a national historic site that also has a sprawling trail system, one of which spans 4 miles along the Willamette River and to Clearwater Park. The ranch features scenic views, shaded trails, and eleven orchards. This destination is great for walks or runs of any length, and is worth the trek out to Springfield on a weekend.
Pre’s Trail:
If you’re looking for nature at the heart of Eugene, Pre’s trail is the perfect stop for a walk to unwind and recharge. In memory of the Oregon Track Club track star and former Olympian Steve Prefontaine, this 3.4 mile trail is perfect for a run or walk. It’s accessible from campus through Alton Baker Park and requires no car or bike. Taking you past Autzen stadium, a small pond, and a river, it’ll make you forget you’re only a few minutes from your home in the city. Duck Life 2021

Center for Student Involvement (CSI) The Center for Student Involvement (CSI) is a hub of information and resources where students and student organizations can come create, build, and connect students through fun events, services, traditions, and activities.
Club Sports Club Sports is an athletic and leadership development program that provides UO students with the opportunity to compete in a variety of team and individual sports and activities. Club teams practice, host games and events, travel to competitions throughout the United States, and contend for national championships every year. All include $50 of Duck Bucks per term, which can be used for food across campus—including the dining venues in the EMU. Deluxe 95 points per week. For students who seldom skip a meal and occasionally treat a friend.

Standard 80 points per week. This plan is the most popular, providing enough points for meals and snacks throughout the week. Select 65 points per week. For students who might skip breakfast but not lunch or dinner. Mini 50 points per week. For students who eat on-the-go and are often off campus on the weekends. Carson Limited Entry to Carson Dining up to six times daily (two times per meal period). This is the most economical plan. Except for the Duck Bucks, this plan is valid only at Carson Dining and can only be changed between terms. Point-based meal plans come with rollover accounts. Leftover points at the end of the week can be used in subsequent weeks (maximum 50 points; rollover is reset to zero at the start of a new term). Find yourself with too many or too few meal points? Feel free to change your plan at any time.

DUCK GEAR (RAIN OR SHINE)
Collect your pom-poms, grab those green and yellow leggings and slap on some face stickers – it’s game day, and it’s time to represent the Ducks. There’s nothing more welcoming than walking in the gates to a sea of green and yellow, so it’s important everyone joins in.You can pick up unique, spirited duck gear of all kinds at the local Hirons or Fred Meyer for a great bargain price, or head over to the Duck Store for name-brand Duck gear! Remember: it may never rain in Autzen stadium, but juuust in case… be prepared, and carry an umbrella or a raincoat with you.
REMEMBER TO HYDRATE!
Regardless of the temperature outside, it can be a pretty tiring job standing in the student section cheering your heart out for four quarters. It’s always an option to grab a quick water from one of the many vendors inside the stadium, or you can save a few dollars and bring your own bottle! Remember to make sure they’re clear and visible, or security won’t let it through the front doors.
SUNSCREEN
Even on the cloudiest day in the stadium, it can take a tough toll on your skin to stand outside with no protection after a long afternoon. Rub some SPF 15 on vulnerable places like your nose, ears or the back of your neck to protect them from the hot sun. For the makeup wearers out there, look for foundations or moisturizers that have SPF built in to make it even easier! Remember to reapply after a few hours for maximum sun protection.
BRING A BUDDY
No one wants to go alone, and the whole day will get better when you’re surrounded by your fellow Ducklings. Bring your friends, a camera to document some sweet group selfies, and arrive early to the game to get a spot in the front—maybe you’ll make it on the big screen. It can get pretty crowded, so have a plan of where to meet if you lose each other, and make sure everyone gets back home safely.
