10 new things

to try in 2022.

Written by Skyla Patton

1 2

Weekly cleaning schedule: This might not sound exciting, but breaking chores down into manageable chunks makes the whole process much more manageable. Pick daily, weekly and monthly tasks to help keep your space tidy without extra stress.

Day prep: Getting ready for the next 24 hours ahead of you prior can make a massive difference in how smoothly each day begins. Lay out your outfit of choice, prepare that coffee or teapot and start to think about what you want for breakfast or pack a lunch in advance.

3

Get outside: While everyone loves a cozy winter spent inside by the fire, getting fresh air can help calm you and clear your mind. Bundle up and breathe in a fresh new year and a new you with a good walk or hike outdoors.

4

Schedule medical appointments: This is such a hard thing to remember to do, but is also so important to keep up on. Call your dentist, dermatologist, or just see a regular family practitioner to get a check up and make sure you’re running at full capacity.

5

Move furniture around: This is an easy solution to freshening up your space without having to deal with breaking the bank. Switch the couch around, try hanging up different frames or posters and add a new ambient light to really spice up a room and give it a new vibe.

dailyemerald.com/ducklivingfair

6

Clean things out: Whether it’s your closet, the junk drawer or the overflowing bathroom cabinet, it’s good practice to take everything out, and put it back in again. This’ll help sort through trash, recyclables or things you might just be ready to say goodbye to.

7

Switch up your smells: As the seasons change, the natural scents outside do too, even if we don’t always realize it. Push the summer scents to the back of the hall closet and opt for wintery blends like pine or nutty scents to help match the current vibe.

8

Wash your emotional support water bottle: Do we need to say more here? Grab some soap and a sponge or cleansing tablets and wash the last few weeks of stress and germs out of that thing.

9 10

Start a new genre of show: It’s easy to get stuck in our comfort shows, but it’s good to switch things up a little too. Test out Netflix’s “play something” feature for a randomized selection or browse recommendation lists online for a new series to keep your attention.

Make a new friend: As safely as you can! In the current world of social distancing, putting yourself out there can be tough, but it’s more important now than ever to prioritize our needs and friendship is so crucial. The local library, online clubs and Facebook Groups are great resources right now to meet new people and expand your networks safely.

The Great Campus Selfie Scavenger Hunt Written by Sophie Bange

Clues:

Looking for a fun way to get to know campus? Have some iconic UO spots to cross off your senior selfie bucket list? Or just looking for a study break? Well, this is the scavenger hunt for you! Grab some friends and follow the clues below to find some of the most picture-perfect campus spots. 1. Did you know a 1,000-pound duck lives on campus? Find him for the perfect place to throw your O! 2. Your next stop will take you from big to bigger - look for two sculptures of mammoth proportions where Oregon’s past is present. 3. Leave the past behind and look forward at UO’s latest and greatest project. This crown jewel of TrackTown USA is hard to miss from anywhere on campus! 4. Ever thought about taking a selfie with a moon goddess? Of course you have - and now’s your chance! She faces a brick building that is home to one of the largest lecture rooms on campus. 5. Let’s do the time warp! This historical room has been so well maintained it feels like a blast to the past, and has housed lectures, ceremonies, and even weddings! Find this piece of history in a building named for the first woman Regent of UO. 6. A famous writer and Oregon alum is immortalized on campus in a small yet beautiful courtyard of benches and blooming trees. It’s a great place to sit down with a good book - or just snap a selfie! 7. Another stunning courtyard is close nearby, and waiting to serve as a backdrop to your photoshoot. A long, thin pool of blue is flanked by two arched corridors in this beautiful spot, which serves as proof that life imitates art.

8. You’re over halfway there - which means you deserve a break! Sit down and relax at this Duck favorite right off campus for a pitcher of your favorite brew and some of the best tater tots you’ve ever had. 9. At your next stop, it’s not all business. Throw your biggest O at this iconic spot for graduation photos! 10. Thousands of small aluminum pieces move freely in the wind - and make for a beautiful selfie backdrop - in this grand outdoor sculpture. 11. Large windows offer prime selfie lighting in this cozy cafe hiding in plain sight, a popular study spot for artists and architects. 12. Nearby, this picturesque plaza is formed by three buildings: the first is named for a major mountain range in the PNW, the second is named for the largest body of water around, and the third’s name is derived from the Latin word vulcan. 13. Your next stop is a building surrounded on three sides by water so reflective, you may not be able to tell where the building ends and the water begins! But don’t worry, there’s little chance of drowning at this popular photo spot. 14. On the way to your final destination, you’ll cross the large boulevard on the north side of campus, pass open green fields, and find yourself hovering above rapids - a great place for a selfie, or to just soak up some nature. 15. We may be in the PNW, but it never rains in one of the UO’s most famous spots. ’Sco Ducks!

THE EMU AND YOU The Erb Memorial Union, better known as the EMU, is the University of Oregon’s epicenter for collaborating, working, creating, socializing and refueling. H. Abbot Lawrence and Ellis F. Lawrence began designing the longawaited student hub in 1945. One year later, Ellis F. Lawrence passed away. Following his father’s death, H. Abbot Lawrence finalized design plans with Tucker and Wallmann. Construction of the redesigned building was completed by 1950. The trio named the building after UO war-time president, Donald Erb.

A Transformative Era

Over the next 49 years, the EMU underwent different stages of construction until it became the dynamic facility it is today. Some of these designs included the southeast addition, the fishbowl, alterations to the ballrooms, the amphitheater, food services and the east addition—which has been demolished since. Per the 2018 impact report, “EMU programs work across departments, divisions, and institutions to offer enriching services and events to campus and beyond.”

Safe Spaces

The Women’s Center provides a wide range of services for students of every gender identity. Their mission statement is to promote social change, end oppression against all people and support personal growth. For parents attending UO, the women’s center offers childcare reimbursement, work resources and lactation stations. Volunteers and staff members at the Women’s center work to cultivate a safe space on campus where students can learn more about sexual violence prevention and safe sexual relationships. The Women’s Center also provides free menstrual and safe sex supplies to students.

2022 Duck Living Fair

Students and Self-care

Dealing with stress during the school term can be difficult, the Duck Nest on the ground floor of the EMU is here to help. The center is run by a group of peer-wellness advocates who dedicate their time to teaching fellow students about self-care and life balance strategies through a variety of programs. Some of the programs they provide include yoga, meditation, therapy dogs and mental well-being workshops. Student wellness advocates also put on wellness presentations for both campus and community organizations. During these presentations, they focus on stress management, sexual health, relaxation, nutrition and suicide prevention.

Law and Order: EMU

For students in need of legal services, the ASUO student legal services office is found on the third floor of the EMU. Since the early 70’s, when it was first established, the legal office advocated for students’ rights and legal awareness. Eligible students have access to three staff attorneys who will take on cases from landlord disputes to name changes. Services are funded by incidental fees for legal advice or office visits. Any anticipated costs beyond the free services are discussed before charges are applied.

Surrender to Sustainability

The Sustainability Center, located on the ground level of the EMU, is another student service that aims to assist in student well-being. The center is responsible for the university’s waste reduction program. The program provides students and faculty access to reusable bottles, tumblers and glasses. There is also a rental program in which students can borrow silverware and dishware for three hours at a time. All materials are washed upon return, so other students have access to hygienic utensils.

And So Much More

For more information about the many resources offered at the EMU visit emu.uoregon.edu or consult the students working at the O desk located in the center of the ground floor. Above all, enjoy exploring everything the EMU has to offer students and faculty.
