Crueger: Exploring a city in full takes time, but many students will only navigate Eugene for a brief four years. A map would be nice.

When I looked into the University of Oregon, tour guides and relatives alike raved about how “cool” Eugene was. It’s a hippie town in a hippie state. It’s primely seated in a river valley, less than a few hours from both the Pacific Ocean and the Cascades. Last spring, I took a trip to Terwilliger Hot Springs. There, a naked woman in a peace sign painted van gave me a corset to wear and told me it would make all my dreams come true. Sadly, she was wrong. The question of what there is to actually do in Eugene still keeps me up at night.

Quick Google searches prompt TripAdvisor-esque results and top ten lists that all inevitably mention the same Saturday Market, parks and museums. These tourist destinations, though, are meant for visitors. For first-year students, Eugene’s online presence offers stepping stones that lead to nowhere.

College students often have only four years to find a sense of community — which is no easy task. And the lack of resources connecting UO students with upperclassmen, alumni and locals further complicates this journey.

Freshmen students may quickly acquaint themselves with The Dough Co. calzones and Insomnia Cookies, but unearthing Eugene’s more hidden gems takes time,

motivation and money.

I feel odd complaining about this issue when the solution seems so easy: explore. Go outside, find places that interest you and see for yourself what they have to offer. This is possible, of course, but I didn’t realize when I applied to pay for an overpriced four years of university that I was also signing up for the Lewis and Clark expedition. If I sound lazy and bitter, it's because I am, a bit. I’m also a full-time college student and one of many who works, retains somewhat of a social life and spends any ounce of free time sleeping and eating like a zoo animal. (Speaking of, while Eugene does not have a zoo, there are several dog parks and even a bird sanctuary).

Eugene is a beautiful place, and has become a home for generations of students who grow to feel kindred to its trees and rain and deliciously cheap sushi.

‘An expression of

me and my interest’

How five UO students turned their passions into self-run businesses.

In a society where an undergraduate education at a public university can cost upwards of $40,000, it is common for students to work while pursuing their degree. According to a report by Georgetown University, close to 70% of college students in the United States also work a job.

Many students hold customer service or other minimum wage jobs that, while not the most engaging, at least help them cover tuition or other life expenses. Being able to combine work and passion can feel out of reach for many, but some students make it happen by turning their interests into businesses.

Running a business requires a huge amount of organization, passion and time, especially when combined with school. Here are five UO students who are making it work.

Something for the curvy girls

Growing up, Jayli Smith heard the message that no one makes money doing art. Now, a fourth year psychology major, Smith said she is satisfied that she is proving otherwise.

She started her business, “Sunkissed and Glowing,” creating reversible swimsuits in April 2021. Each piece is custom made to fit her customer’s body.

“I did it for the busty women,” Smith said. “It’s hard for us to find something that’s beautiful and makes us feel beautiful.”

Since starting her business, Smith has received countless orders and so much positive feedback on the final product, she said. She currently only has one pattern because of how busy she is, but she hopes to branch out into lingerie as well.

Starting “Sunkissed and Glowing” gave Smith the freedom to control her own work hours and create space to be artistic. She’s also made enough money to quit her other job and still support her own needs, she said. She has always been interested in art and, before making swimsuits, painted custom sneakers.

Smith’s passion shines through in her work, and the people who used to tell her she could not make money doing art are now the ones telling her how proud they are, she said.

“I want everybody of all sizes to be able to say, ‘Okay, this was made for me.’ That’s what motivated me to make bathing suits,” Smith said.

Valuing your art

Fourth year architecture major Natalie Price has a passion for painting and “spontaneous art projects.”

In March 2019, she started her Instagram page dirtgirlpaints. Her friend runs an art space, so Price decided to sell some of her crafts.

Originally, she sold a mixture of different crafts: embroidered pins, hand painted patches and paintings. But she soon realized that making PA G E 4

so much by hand was time consuming, and she could not make enough money to justify her time and effort, she said. She switched to just painting, starting with pet portraits.

“Knowing how to value yourself and your time is really hard,” Price said.

The amount of art that Price sells ebbs and flows, depending on the amount of time she has to put into it. In the end, the business evolves with her, she said.

Currently, Price mostly creates paintings and hand paints objects she finds at thrift stores. She has dreams to eventually renovate old furniture as well. Price said she is always thinking of inspiration for her next creations, and she sees it everywhere — walking down the aisle at Goodwill or browsing the bins at MECCA are two of her favorite spots to find inspiration.

“My business is, at the moment, just kind of an expression of me and my interest,” Price said.

From basketball courts to cameras

In her final year of high school, Josie Williamson injured her back, prompting her to take a break from basketball and pick up a camera. Having never taken a photography class before, Williamson said she is completely self taught. Now a fourth year advertising major, Williamson runs her own photography business.

Williamson does sports photography for Oregon Women's Basketball, and her business, Josie Leigh Photography, provides wedding, family and senior photos. She has grown her business through Instagram and word of mouth.

On top of being an incoming senior and running a photography business, Williamson is an assistant coach for Springfield High School’s women’s varsity basketball team and manages the UO women’s basketball team. Managing the women’s team pays for part of Williamson’s tuition, and she is able to cover the rest of her financial needs with her photography business, Williamson said.

“I could spend 24/7 on my business if I wasn’t disciplined,” Williamson said. “I would probably fail out of college if I didn’t learn how to time manage.”

A bad experience getting her high school senior photos taken inspired Williamson to create positive experiences for her clients. Her goal is to make everyone feel comfortable, she said.

"I am more drawn to capture a person and their personality — the beauty of that person,” Williamson said.

Post graduation, Williamson hopes to continue Josie Leigh Photography and shooting sports.

Making mom proud

Last Christmas, fourth year advertising major Bella Dentler made jewelry to give to her friends. A

month ago, she went public and started selling her jewelry via her Instagram, “bhelluhz.” Dentler has sold about 20 pairs of earrings so far, and everything she posted on Instagram all sold out within a day, she said.

Dentler sells solely earrings at the moment. Her process starts with scrolling through Pinterest for inspiration. She then creates a design, decides on the colors and uses a mason jar to roll out the polymer clay. She usually makes the jewelry while binging TV shows like “Broad City.”

Her favorite part is “when people slide up [on Instagram] and are like ‘Those are so cool,’” Dentler said. “Having people actually validating my art means a lot.”

Dentler’s family immigrated to the U.S. from the Philippines, and there was a pressure to be a doctor in a family where “everyone is a pharmacist,” she said.

“Taking a creative route is not very validated in my family,” Dentler said. “So getting to hear other people be excited about the things I do makes me really excited.”

Her mom recently told Dentler about a proud moment she had explaining to a friend that her daughter is an artist. She even helps Dentler buy clay and wants her own pair of earrings, Dentler said.

Empowerment through photography

As a child, Charlotte Moerel loved being in front of the camera, especially when her grandma was taking the pictures. Now a third year advertising major, Moerel hates being in front of the camera, she said, but loves being the one snapping photos. She runs Charlotte Moerel Photography, providing headshots, graduation photo shoots and other photo packages.

“A big part of my brand is finding the beauty within yourself,” Moerel said. “I have a big rule of not photoshopping anyone’s bodies or photoshopping anything that would not change within a week.”

With over ten years of experience taking photos, Moerel is in the process of building her business and growing her Instagram following. As an international student from the Netherlands, she hopes to get a working visa post graduation to continue working as a photographer in the United States.

She currently does about one photo shoot a week, often with friends, and always has at least nine photos queued up for Instagram in order to keep her feed fresh. If she gets a work visa, Moerel hopes to shoot mostly weddings and maternity shoots, always with a lens of empowerment.

“I’m all about empowering people to feel comfortable and feel beautiful and be in front of that camera,” Moerel said.

THE HAYWARD MAGIC SHOE COMES ALIVE! STORY BEGINS Hayward had a fascination with shoes that began long before he arrived in Eugene. Before one of his professional races, Hayward came out for his warmups wearing striped socks over his shoes. As soon as the gun went off, Hayward ripped off the socks, revealing a new pair of shoes with spikes on the soles — one of the first known pairs of spiked shoes to ever be used in a track meet. He won by a landslide.

During the race, a number of nearby retail stores were robbed by a suspect who’d climbed in through the roof. Because of his spiked shoes, Hayward was briefly held and questioned by the local police. He was released soon after, free of any charges.

OREGON COMMUNITIES FACE EXTREME DROUGHT

With more than half of Oregon in extreme drought conditions, farmers, tribes, watershed communities and BIPOC communities prepare for a dry future.

BY ALEXIS WEISEND In the midst of one of Oregon’s worst droughts, local communities must navigate extremely dry conditions and prepare for a more arid future. Farmers, tribes, watershed communities and BIPOC communities face economic, spiritual, environmental and social impacts.

More than half of Oregon, including Lane County, is in extreme drought conditions, according to the US Drought Monitor.

Nineteen of Oregon’s 36 counties have declared drought emergencies, according to a statement by Gov. Kate Brown on July 7.

Dry conditions mean dying crops, lower lake elevations, loss of biodiversity, pollution and extreme heat.

Agricultural adversities “We were going to go out there and, once it got really hot, start our irrigation,” Ben Larson, manager at My Brothers’ Farm, said. “That’s when our pump broke.”

Larson and his two brothers run the 320acre farm in southern Willamette Valley. They planted a turnip crop to feed their hogs in the start of May, Larson said. Due to the drought, they had to start using their pump earlier.

However, it broke, and three weeks without rain followed.

Larson said most of the turnip crop dried out, so he and his brothers didn’t have as much to feed the pigs. It was the “biggest crop failure” from the drought, he said.

Larson said he and his brothers looked at water usage when determining what crops they planted. As a result, the farm is transitioning away from annual ryegrass — a

common grass in the valley for a seed crop — because it now dries out earlier, Larson said.

Endangered species and cultural exchange Don Gentry, tribal council chairman of the Klamath Tribes, said he used to catch C’waam and Koptu fish for his family and community in the Upper Klamath Lake. The fish are economically and spiritually important to members of the Klamath Tribes, Gentry said.

“They were just so plentiful that you could see them in the river jumping everywhere,” he said. “We haven’t been able to fish for them since 1986.”

That year, the Klamath Tribes shut down their own fishing season out of concern for the now endangered C’waam and Koptu populations. Declining water levels due to drought and the US Bureau of Recreation’s Klamath Project — which draws water from the lake for agricultural uses in other areas — put the fish at risk.

Now, the Klamath Tribes are limited to harvesting two fish a year for ceremonial purposes, according to their website.

Federally endangered and only found in Upper Klamath Lake, the fish face serious threats from the lake’s declining water levels, Gentry said. The water level of the lake impacts the habitat and spawning-abilities of the C’waam and Koptu.

Gentry said he used to catch fish to share with his tribe’s elders. He would talk with elders as they ate together, discussing worldviews, the history of the tribe, family and their favorite fish. He said those conversations helped him find his purpose.

“It’s heartbreaking to know that younger generations haven’t been able to catch and share those fish and eat them and experience that cultural exchange,” Gentry said.

The search for resilience amidst environmental degradation Running through the heart of Eugene, the Long Tom River Watershed includes Amazon Creek, Fern Ridge Reservoir and creeks originating in the Coast Range. The Long Tom flows to the Willamette River.

city of Monroe, the watershed is home to a plethora of biodiversity, according to its website.

However, Long Tom Watershed Council Executive Director Clinton Begley said the drought depleted soil moisture, which means the springs that feed many of the Long Tom River’s tributaries have less groundwater to draw from.

Begley said lower stream flows have led to higher concentrations of pollutants in the water from urban, industrial and residential spaces. Not only does this negatively affect aquatic species, he said, but the pollutants also make their way to the water treatment plant in Monroe.

The watershed council is preparing for future droughts by considering which species might be better adapted to drier climates when it decides what to plant in the area, Begley said.

He said it’s also important for the watershed council to work with Indigenous tribes, so they can reconnect to the land and steward it in the way they did before.

“It’s a restoration of people and also a restoration of cultural practices to the landscape so that we can be more climate resilient,” Begley said.

Additional barriers for BIPOC communities Oregon’s drought highlights disparities in drought vulnerability, particularly among BIPOC communities, said Tana Atchley Culbertson, a co-director of Nesika Wilamut, a network that aims to protect the Willamette River system, and member of the Klamath Tribes.

BIPOC communities are disproportionately impacted by the heat that often accompanies drought because they make up a large portion of the outdoor workforce, Atchley Culbertson said. She said outdoor jobs include farming and construction work.

Additionally, Atchley Culbertson said the drought heightens concerns about discrimination while cooling off outdoors in public areas.

To combat those issues, the Oregon legislature passed SB 289 last month. The bill addresses the safety disparity in the outdoors amidst a rise in hate crimes in public spaces.

ALTMAN LANDS SIX-YEAR EXTENSION: Per a report from CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein, Oregon men's basketball head coach Dana Altman is now under contract until the 2026-2027 season. Since arriving in Eugene in 2010, Altman has done nothing but win, making the extension an easy decision for the board of trustees. 61-year-old Altman has collected a career record of 280110 since joining the program and is the winningest coach in Oregon history.

BOOTLEG FIRE AT 42% CONTAINMENT: Oregon’s largest active wildfire reached 42% containment, as of the morning of July 24. The Bootleg Fire spans across roughly 400,000 acres — about half the size of Rhode Island. As of July 24, roughly 2,000 households in Klamath and Lake Counties have had to evacuate, according to KOIN. KOIN reported that officials expect the fire to spread more slowly than before due to partial containment and changing wind conditions.

Before the Eugene Emeralds’ matchup against the Hillsboro Hops on Friday, Hops DH Jorge Barrosa approached Brett Auerbach, who was wearing catcher’s gear. Barrosa’s eyes widened as he exclaimed, “You’re Auerbach? You’re catching today? You do everything, man!”

They each smiled as Barrosa walked away, shaking his head while chuckling to himself.

Auerbach has played catcher, second, third and center for the Emeralds this season and entered the night with a homer in each of his last three games.

He was in the middle of warming up Friday night’s starting pitcher, Giants No. 5 prospect Seth Corry.

Corry entered the night with a 5.93 ERA, 54 walks and 15 hit batters in 54 2/3 innings this season.

Corry set out to fix his control problems by utilizing his fastball, and it came with mixed results. He gave up three runs in four innings, as the Emeralds brought an 8-3 lead into the seventh.

But the bullpen collapsed for the third time in the last two weeks, giving up seven runs in the seventh and ultimately falling 10-9, ending their two-game winning streak.

Corry relied on the fastball early, reaching as high as 96 mph in the first inning and sitting at 94. He issued a one-out walk, briefly bringing his season K/9 back up to 9.0. But he induced an inning-ending double play, throwing almost exclusively fastballs.

Ismael Munguia led off the Emeralds’ half of the first with a double. Tyler Fitzgerald tapped a bloop single into right, and Munguia came around to score as the throw home was off line. Sean Roby followed with a two-run blast to left-center field, giving the Emeralds an early 3-0 lead.

Corry fell behind 3-1 on the first batter in the second and induced a pop-up to the right side. There was miscommunication between the infielders, and the ball dropped in for a “double.”

Corry finally went to the curveball and gave up a run-scoring double. With one out, Corry gave up a long fly ball to right that Franklin Labour almost made a nice catch on. But Labour bobbled it, and the ball fell for the third double of the inning. Labour fumbled with the ball some more as the runner came racing around third, and Labour fired home.

Brett Auerbach initially missed the tag, but the runner also missed home plate sliding away from the tag. Auerbach then reached over and finally nabbed the runner on the wrist for the out at the plate.

Corry issued his second walk of the game, but ended the inning with a 79 mph curveball. It was an ugly inning with some hard contact off fastballs, but the Emeralds led 3-1.

Hits from Tyler Flores, Carter Aldrete and Munguia brought in two more Eugene runs in the bottom of the second.

Corry continued to rely on his fastball in the third inning, but it came at the expense of allowing more contact. Three singles brought in two Hillsboro runs, making it a 5-3 game.

Corry issued his third walk in as many innings, but recorded two strikeouts with some sharp curveballs.

His curve is great when it’s on, but he’ll have to consistently trust and command it going forward.

He gave up a single in the fourth, but a pair of long fly outs got him through the inning.

Corry came out of the game after just four innings,

having thrown 84 pitches. He gave up three runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out three.

The biggest takeaway was that he was relying on his fastball more to avoid the walks that have plagued him so much this season, but it came at the expense of giving up more contact.

The Emeralds tacked on three insurance runs in the fifth, with Labour hitting an RBI double and Flores hitting a two-run single.

Solomon Bates struck out the side in order for the Emeralds in the sixth, as he provided two scoreless innings in relief.

Bryce Tucker gave up a two-run double in the seventh inning, as the Hops wouldn’t back down. A run-scoring single then made it 8-6, yanking Tucker from the game after he recorded just one out.

Jasier Herrera came in and gave up back-to-back infield singles that tied the game. The next batter poked yet another single into right field, bringing home two more and giving Hillsboro a 10-8 lead. It was a seven-run inning as Tucker’s ERA went up to 9.93.

The game crawled by at a snail’s pace after some quicker games earlier in the series.

Herrera gave up two long fly outs in a scoreless eighth, clearly unhappy with himself despite the balls being caught. He wound up staying in for the ninth as well and pitching a scoreless frame.

Fitzgerald began the bottom of the ninth by demolishing one over the left field fence to get the Emeralds within a run. But despite a hard-hit ball by Roby, a competitive at-bat by Ricardo Genoves and a walk by Flores, the Emeralds fell just short. The final score was 10-9.
