What do you like about working in a diverse, intercultural environment like Rebellious?

My PR agency, Rebellious PR & Consulting, is doing amazing work. We, for the most part, solely focus on servicing minority founders.

And it’s been so cool to get on the phone with people who are genuinely passionate about the organizations and the businesses that they’ve started. I work with so many different industries, and my clients come from so many different backgrounds. I’m so fortunate to have that experience and to love where I work, to love logging on every day and connecting with my co-workers. Also, seeing people that look like me at an agency is huge. “I think it’s extremely disappointing and gross. I think in this type of situation. POWERFUL RETURN

After a five-year hiatus, the moment has finally come — King Kendrick is back with ‘Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers.’

Kendrick Lamar’s name carries a lot of weight, and he knows this about himself more than anyone. As the hip-hop mogul who gave hope to a divided nation with anthems like “Alright” and “The Blacker the Berry,” Lamar faces the growing pressures of being a person who people depend on to uplift them and make an impact on their lives — but he is just a man. A man who deals with pain, grief, trauma and mental health battles just like anyone else. The time came to step away, focus on himself and reflect inward.

Now, after a five-year hiatus from his solo work, the Compton rapper is back to share with the world what he has learned about himself and to set the record straight: he is not your savior.

Lamar’s fifth proper studio album, “Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers,” his final project under his career-defining Top Dawg Entertainment label, serves as the pivot point into a new era of his career. The project was also released through pgLang, his new media company he founded with manager Dave Free and announced back in March 2020.

The double album, consisting of 18 tracks split into two nine-track sections, channels sounds and musical styles we haven’t seen much from him before, as well as heavy, deeply introspective subject matter that reflects his personal growth and journey since his mainstream absence.

The album kicks off with “United In Grief,” a perfect first taste into the album experience, as he reveals how materialism couldn’t alleviate his pain or fill the void inside him. The listener is greeted by a beautiful vocal refrain from singer Sam Dew, before quickly being interrupted by a section of staccato piano chords.

The song then leads into another switch up into a soft, jazz-influenced piano passage, before quickly making another unexpected shift into a chunky, fasttempoed, percussive drum break. Each musical component weaves back and forth between each other, building toward a cinematic string section toward the end. The constant progression of the album opener tests Lamar’s relentless flow changes with several unpredictable switch-ups.

Throughout the album, the listener is enveloped in a roller coaster of varying genres, sounds and playful production, including the radio-ready “N95,” fueled by infectious trap drums and a shiny synth melody that showcases Lamar’s hit-making capabilities and his bouncy, contagious flows. In the song, Lamar is challenging the listener to take away all the superficial objects and facades people use to cope and to ask what is left. The Kodak Black-assisted “Silent Hill” also provides an addictive, booming trap beat with an infectious and upbeat energy from both rappers. These brighter sides of the album deliver irresistible performances where you can’t help but bob your head along to the beat.

Lamar also taps into twinges of R&B and pop with catchy cuts like “Die Hard” and “Purple Hearts,” with smooth vocal performances across lush, heartfelt melodies, featuring the likes of Blxst, Amanda Reifer, Summer Walker and Ghostface Killah.

Lamar wants to overcome his struggles and insecurities in order to build his relationships with lyrics such as “I got some regrets / But my past won’t keep me from my best.”

Themes of high responsibility and the pressure of people depending on him ring through in the heart-wrenching “Crown.” The track features an incredibly intimate piano instrumental where Lamar croons that “I can’t please everybody.”

The demands of being one of the best rappers alive takes a lot out of him, because “Heavy is the head that chose to wear the crown.”

Lamar also reflects on past trauma with abuse on “Mother I Sober,” another heartbreaking yet beautiful piano-driven track where he opens up about his mother’s abuse and later the “generational curse” and recurring cycle of sexual abuse faced by Black children. “Father Time,” another crushing piano-based track with entrancing vocal features from Sampha, sees Lamar reflecting on similar issues of his past daddy issues and how ingrained toxic masculinity can be passed down through generations by the presence of — or lack thereof — a father figure.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the album comes through on track eight of the first disc, “We Cry Together,” which many have compared to Eminem’s “Kim.” The track displays an intensely vivid and horribly toxic fight between Lamar and actress Taylour Paige, rapping from the perspective of a cutthroat relationship over a grimy boom-bap instrumental. Showcasing the poisonous behaviors of heteronormative relationships, the vicious argument between their characters is so fierce and powerful that you almost forget it all rhymes.

The album touches on many other internal issues, such as gender and his relatives’ transphobia on “Auntie Diaries,” or that he alone cannot be the solution to the world’s problems on “Savior.” The range of subject matter he exposes is just as expansive as the production styles that back it. The level of honesty and growth across the project is supplemented by the experimentation of sound Lamar utilizes.

Overall, the album provides a fresh palette of tracks that adds well to his wideranging discography thus far. This body of work is defined by musical and emotional moments, propelled by Lamar’s versatility of vocal tones and inflections that affect each song’s mood as well.

If we learn anything from “Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers,” it’s that Lamar is only human just like the rest of us, and we can learn a thing or two about accepting our past and growing from our mistakes.

LOCAL FENTANYL SPIKE

HIGHLIGHTS LACK OF HARM REDUCTION SUPPLIES AT UO A spike in fentanyl-related overdoses has hit Eugene once again. However, a state law bans the distribution of lifesaving fentanyl testing strips.

A spike in fentanyl-related overdoses across Lane County has sparked concern over a lack of harm reduction supplies on the University of Oregon campus.

Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid often used to treat patients after surgery, has been co-opted by drug cartels to increase the potency of street drugs. It’s cheap, it’s plentiful and it’s the cause of tens of thousands of deaths each year in the United States.

According to the United States Drug Enforcement Administration, it can take only two milligrams of fentanyl to kill a person. That minuscule amount can easily hide in a five-milligram oxycodone pill or some lines of cocaine sitting on a coffee table at a party.

So when the Eugene Police Department announced a significant increase in fentanyl-related overdoses on April 25, the Eugene community was put on high alert.

“Based on what is being seen in our community, if someone buys a street or ‘party’ drug it should be assumed it contains fentanyl,” the news release said. A party drug is a recreational drug like Xanax, oxycodone and cocaine — a drug EPD is especially concerned about since it’s received growing reports of powdered fentanyl.

Now out of the height of the pandemic, UO students are having more parties, which means more of these party drugs are likely in circulation.

However, harm reduction supplies like fentanyl testing strips and naloxone — which is also known as Narcan and is used to reverse an overdose — are not readily accessible for students.

Kayla Krueger, an ASUO senator and a sophomore, had been working on a project to bring fentanyl testing strips to the Erb Memorial Union since fall term. The strips work by making the drug into a powder, mixing it up, dissolving a small portion in water and placing the test strip in.

She said she was working with the Women’s Center on a plan to buy the tests in bulk from a distributor selling them for 95 cents each. They would have been available in the EMU for students, sort of like the contraceptive stations near bathrooms in the building.

Krueger needed approval from UO to carry out her project. However, the UO General Council determined that providing fentanyl testing strips would be in violation of a state law against the sale of drug paraphernalia.

marketed for use or designed for use in identifying or in analyzing the strength, effectiveness or purity of controlled substances” as being illegal.

“It was really shocking, especially because we had been working on the project for so long,” Krueger said.

She plans to lobby with other ASUO members and non-profits to change that state law next year.

She said she has spoken to people who have lost loved ones due to fentanyl overdoses. “I’d hate for anyone at the University of Oregon to go through something like that.”

In 2020, a UO student unknowingly purchased fentanyl-laced oxycodone pills, which resulted in his death. According to a news release from the Department of Justice, a Eugene resident was recently sentenced to federal prison for selling the student the laced drug.

Dean Shold, a co-founder of a non-profit called FentCheck that aims to supply businesses, organizations and schools with fentanyl testing strips, said he was interested in working with UO to provide fentanyl testing strips to students. FentCheck, which works with over 50 venues, currently collaborates with UC Berkeley to distribute testing strips through Berkley’s University Health Services.

reduction is meeting people where they're at,’” he said.

“Some of them are at syringe exchanges, but those aren’t the ones we're looking at. It's the recreational drug users, the kids who are going into university and want to experiment.”

However, Shold said he was not aware of the university’s hesitancy with fentanyl testing strips until ASUO attempted its initiative.

“There's this huge stigma around checking your drugs,” he said. “If you're checking it, ‘oh my gosh, that's a bad thing.’ No, this is a good thing. This is how you actually can make informed consent decisions and stay alive.”

Becky Noad, HIV Alliance’s prevention and education manager, distributes hundreds of fentanyl testing strips around the Eugene area and said she has never heard of this law. “I wouldn’t classify them as drug paraphernalia,” she said.

During the fiscal year of 2020 to 2021, HIV Alliance distributed fentanyl testing strips to about 425 clients, according to Noad. Over 100 of those clients reported the presence of fentanyl in their drugs.

“Fentanyl is very much present in our community,” Noad said. “It's contaminating a lot of drugs and just assume that the drugs that you're getting probably do have fentanyl in them.”

Jason Davis of Lane County Public Health said all of Lane County is experiencing a spike right now, but fentanyl has always been a problem. He said the county receives about 10 emergency calls related to fentanyl overdoses per week.

Spikes occur because certain batches of drugs that come into the market contain fentanyl, he said.

Once the supply runs out or a drug bust happens, overdoses will start to drop off.

In the latest example of local batches being halted, EPD announced on May 19 that it found approximately 11,000 suspected fentanyl pills in a Eugene residence.

Davis said adding fentanyl to pills is a cheaper solution for sellers to make their drugs more potent.

Fentanyl creeping into the party drug circulation is especially alarming to Davis. He said people doing party drugs usually don’t have the tolerance for opioids that regular users do, meaning they’re more susceptible to overdoses.

“They’re doing it on weekends. They’re doing it at parties. Maybe once a month. Now those folks are at

Despite the recent spike, Davis said, Narcan, a nasal spray that can reverse the effects of an overdose, has prompted historic lows in Lane County for overdose deaths.

Erik Kilgore, who runs a non-profit called Henry’s Uncle that centers on ending the stigma of addiction and raising awareness about illicit fentanyl, and Nathan Smiddy, a member of the non-profit A New PATH with a similar mission to Henry’s Uncle, handed out free Narcan and held trainings on how to use it at the ASUO Street Faire.

Kilgore started Henry's Uncle after his brother, a former UO student, passed away from a fentanylrelated overdose in 2018.

“Many students would stop dead in their tracks when they heard Narcan or free Narcan,” he said. “They know about the fentanyl epidemic, and they want to be a part of the solution. They want to be prepared in case.”

Smiddy said he overdosed at age 19, and Narcan saved his life. He said he distributes Narcan and spreads awareness because he wants to prevent unnecessary death and help others avoid his lived experiences.

According to Smiddy, they trained 265 people and distributed 530 doses of Narcan.

“We had parents literally turning their son around to watch the training and grab a kit to make sure, you know, because it can happen anywhere anytime,” Kilgore said. “It turned out the father was an EMT and knew the importance of having Narcan on hand.”

Students told Kilgore they wanted Narcan, but it’s

often too expensive for them, he said.

“The most common response was ‘We know what it is. We don't know how to use it, and it's also not easily accessible,’” he said.

In Oregon, pharmacists can dispense Narcan without a prescription. Hirons, which has some of the closest pharmacies to the UO campus, said it sells Narcan for $135 a box, which contains two doses.

Kilgore said that price is ridiculous because naloxone, the generic form of Narcan, is made cheaply. However, he said he isn’t shocked because Narcan is owned by the company Emergent BioSolutions and is the most common version of naloxone that is delivered nasally rather than via a syringe.

The average price of naloxone in the United States is $31 according to a 2020 study in the National Library of Medicine.

“It seems like Emergent is charging higher prices for Narcan because of their delivery mechanism, which is unethical, especially during a national epidemic,” Kilgore said.

One Resident Assistant spoke to Kilgore at the ASUO Street Faire and said they wished every dorm had nasal naloxone on hand in case someone begins to overdose, Kilgore said.

UO Communications Spokesperson Molly Blancett said Narcan is not available in the residence halls.

The Daily Emerald spoke to three RAs who said they were never trained on how to use naloxone. One RA said any time a resident needs medical assistance,

they must call 9-1-1.

Kilgore said ambulances may not be able to reach students overdosing in time before brain damage can start.

According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, ambulances' average response time is seven minutes. However, the National Library of Medicine said permanent brain damage can occur after four minutes without oxygen — a common way people die of overdoses.

Smiddy and Kilgore want to work with Krueger to lobby the state legislature to change the law preventing the distribution of fentanyl testing strips.

“The thing with Narcan is that it’s something that they’d use after the fact,” Krueger said. “That’s something that someone has to have on hand if someone goes into an overdose. I think it would be a lot more effective to just prevent all that.”

Shold, whose non-profit mostly operated in California, lobbied for state Assembly Bill 1598, which excludes fentanyl testing equipment from state law similar to Oregon’s law banning drug paraphernalia.

The law passed the Assembly on March 17 and was ordered to the Senate.

He said he hopes to help lobby for a similar bill here as well.

“If we were to be able to change the law, it would mean that I'm doing my part to help people my age and help save some lives,” Krueger said. “It would be really powerful just to provide that sort of basic necessity and safety precaution.”

Iverson and Wheeler: Two typically critical columnists converse on whether liking things is the move or if hate really can move mountains.

Iverson: Being a hater is lame I get that everyone’s a critic — I’m literally an opinion columnist. Still, why does it feel like liking things has gone out of style?

When did disliking everything become a popular personality trait?

That sounds boring as hell. Being a contrarian solely for the sake of separating yourself from the pack is quite honestly pitiful. Establishing yourself and identifying as a “hater” in general has got to be the lamest thing I’ve ever heard.

I can’t imagine feeling neutral about something — or perhaps even liking something — but hating on it in public just to make sure you don’t fit in. If your disdain for things is the only discernible quality you possess, I feel sorry for you. Yes, you’re different — but also very goofy.

But don’t let me knock you off your ways, oh no, other haters like you are hyping you up! Congrats, here are your internet points. Hey, a

But guess what: When people close Twitter, they go do something they enjoy. A shocking revelation, I know, but you’re missing out. They just don’t admit that because their internet friends will make fun of them.

I know it’s easier to say you hate something: You don’t have to explain why you do, and that’s the most fun part. You can like something for no reason, too! It’s also really fun to not defend your enjoyment of something; “I don’t know, it’s cool” is the best reason of all.

Tell someone you thought their joke was funny, write a positive movie review or tweet out a song you like. Admit you like something, even if others don’t agree. You will not die.

I’ll level with you; a few times have been close. One time I was watching a cute Disney movie, “Enchanbo” or something, y’know a children’s film, so that I could write a scathing IMDb review. Yet when the family sang at the end, I felt myself producing dopamine. In a fight-or-flight moment, I threw the remote through the TV. I had to go to the playground and grease the monkey bars to put myself back in the grindset.

You can’t be too mad at me, because this is just yin and yang, baby. Don’t lie, it feels good to like something when you know someone dislikes it. No light without darkness right? Me being rude in the replies is the natural order of things.

I mean, my moronic interlocutor likes potholes and tarot cards, can you think of worse things to enjoy? I haven’t seen a combination that bad since their parents.

With spring 2022 commencement around the corner, graduation envy and anxiety have begun to affect the UO community. Whether you are a freshman waiting for summer break, a sophomore changing their major, a junior experiencing burnout or anywhere in-between, the path to graduation is different for every student. Thinking about the future can be scary, however graduating is just the beginning to an exciting period of being an adult. Good luck and congratulations to the class of 2022.

OREGON SOFTBALL ADVANCES TO FAYETTEVILLE REGIONAL FINAL WITH 8-1 WIN OVER WICHITA STATE

Oregon softball ended Saturday night strong with an 8-1 win against Wichita State to advance to the Fayetteville Regional Final.

Freshman ace Stevie Hansen started on the mound for the Ducks. She pitched four strong innings as she only allowed one run to Wichita State. Her relief, Makenna Kliethermes, only allowed two hits for the rest of the game.

Offensively, the Ducks got on the board early. The first two runs came from catcher Terra McGowan coming home on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly from right fielder Ariel Carlson.

Wichita State’s only run of the game came in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single from infielder Zoe Jones.

Wichita State’s pitchers never found a groove. The Ducks added two more runs to the board thanks to center fielder Jasmine Williams scoring on a wild pitch and an RBI single from second baseman Allie Bunker.

In the sixth inning, the Ducks brought in their eighth and final run of the night.

Bunker scored on a sacrifice fly from Carlson.

The Ducks will face Arkansas one more time on Sunday, May 22, at 11 a.m. for a chance to advance to the Super Regionals. The game will be available to watch on ESPN+.
