This local business allows customers to profit off of their donated items and have access to secondhand gear that is costly when purchased from big name retailers.

Low economic, LGBTQ+ and people of color are all demographics that are often removed from the conversation of outdoor clothing and gear corporations mass markets. The upper class is often targeted in advertising campaigns, focusing on consumers' need for the best performance and trendy innovation. At Eugene Gear Traders, with two locations both located on West 5th Avenue, there is no need to worry about affording a backpack or multi-terrain shoes.

This business has all secondhand items, and it uses a consignment agreement that allows a person who donates items to get a percentage of the sale price once it is sold. All items at the store are marked down by half of their original prices because they have either been gently used or are not in season.

One of the stores predominantly sells gear such as bikes, watercrafts and hiking equipment while the other sells clothing items that range from flannels to fleeces. The stores create spaces that mimic a mountain lodge with wood-paneled floors and walls. The newest location, which opened in December 2021, has a comfy couch available for those waiting on their friends as they try on clothes.

Bevin Helm, the owner of Eugene Gear Traders, said every decision she makes at the shop is based on “living sustainability.” Helm believes if everyone can reuse something, it would be the best decision for the planet. She said retail makes people feel better about themselves, but the consequences of buying fast fashion can lead cheap clothing to landfills and online retailers refusing to refund customers. Helm’s consignment shop utilizes social media to reach a wider audience.

“The whole outdoor industry is relatively new in the mainstream way that it has become,” Helm said. “The industry really began in the Northwest, and generally people who live in urban areas don’t have a connection to the outside where they can practice a healthy state of mind.”

is a barrier for people to experience leisure activities such as camping, backpacking or surfing. The government’s study found that Black and Latinx communities have more constraints than White people because they have less time for entertainment, inadequate information regarding the outdoors and systemically feel unwelcome in public parks.

Helm said Gear Traders supports all types of people in their outdoor activities. She believes there is an adjustment for the populations who did not grow up around the outdoors to positively interact with nature.

She also views the stigma of the outdoors as historically refusing to support a budget-friendly person. The products are priced high because the materials are intended to last for a long period of time and are durable in all weather conditions, Helm said.

Jackets made out of Gore-Tex are priced around $600 because they are made to repel water and perform to the quality they advertise. Helm thinks people should research cheaper products that still serve the same function or style they are looking for.

Helm opened the first shop in March 2020 in Eugene after living and working in ski and bike shops in Bend, Oregon, and Jackson Hole, Wyoming. She noticed Eugene was a centralized location for year-round, multi-sport activities, but it was absent from the consignment model of business. The consignment form works by creating an account with the store and negotiating whether one wants to donate an item, permit the store to set a price or allow the customer to set the price. The consignment period lasts four months, and if a product is not sold, it is considered a donated item.

“Our margins of pricing are based on how much the product sells for, and it is always a slighting scale,” Helm said. “If a product is priced under $100, we take 60% and give back 40% of the sale, between $100 to $200 is 50% and anything over $300 is 70% back to the co-signer. We do take more margin because that's the only way we can keep the lights on in this place.”

Madison Paschal, a second-year education student at Lane Community College and sales associate at Eugene Gear Traders, is Helm’s niece, and she has worked at Gear Traders since October 2021.

As a native to Eugene, Paschal said “loving the Earth” is how she was raised. Paschal views the consignment process as efficient because the items can be properly checked for quality control.

“Gear is just so expensive in general because it is meant to last, and because it is meant to last, it ends up being placed on people’s shelves for years,” Paschal said. “This place is really cool because people get to bring that in, and the community benefits because they get to either make a profit or buy products at a great price.”

Eugene Gear Traders is an opportunity for students or people interested in outdoor activities to buy gear for their next ski trip or kayak adventure.

Eugene Gear Traders is located at 233 W 5th Avenue and 505 Willamette Street. The stores are about two blocks from each other.

Both stores are open Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

INSIDE UO’S BOARD CHAIR VACANCY UO board of trustees chair Chuck Lillis will remain in position during a transition period and will step down at the end of the year.

BY WILL COZINE University of Oregon board of trustees chair Chuck Lillis is nearing the end of his service on the board, and the board has yet to determine who will fill the role.

In April 2021, there was major turnover on the board as seven trustees were replaced. Because of this turnover, Oregon Gov. Kate Brown asked Lillis to remain in his position to be a guiding force during a transition period, according to Around the O. Trustees are generally allowed to serve up to two consecutive four-year terms, according to the board’s website. Campus-based positions like the student and faculty trustees have two-year terms. Lillis will enter a third term — though it is expected to be a brief one.

According to a UO announcement, Lillis plans to step down in June.

The chair is the leader of the board and facilitates meetings. According to UO policy, the chair has the authority to request reports and recommendations from UO committees and advisory groups, to authorize the institution of some legal actions and to execute and grant academic degrees and other recognitions.

be selected. UO spokesperson Saul Hubbard said the trustees normally select a new board chair and vice chair every three years.

It is also possible that Lillis could leave the board before a new chair is selected, Hubbard said.

“In the event of a vacancy of the Board Chair position, the Vice Chair temporarily assumes responsibilities of the Chair and calls a meeting, as soon as practicable, so the trustees can select a new Chair,” Hubbard said.

The current vice chair is Ginevra Ralph, a member of the 2013 inaugural board. Her term will end at the conclusion of the 2021-22 academic year.

Trustees Ross Kari, Lillis and Ralph are not candidates to become the new chair due to their terms ending. Student trustee Julia Lo, faculty trustee Ed Madison, non-faculty staff trustee Jimmy Murray and UO President Michael Schill are also not candidates.

That leaves Marcia Aaron, Tim Boyle, Renée Evans Jackman, Toya Flick, Steve Holwerda, Elisa M. deCastro Hornecker, Connie Seeley and Dennis Worden as the only eligible candidates among current board members.

The incoming board members that will replace the ones leaving may also be appointed, but it is possible that an appointment could occur before new trustees are inducted.

The board may also conduct an external search.

Aaron is the founder of KIPP Public Schools, a group of charter schools in southern California.

Boyle is the CEO of Columbia Sportswear.

Jackman is a grants management officer at the DC Department of Behavioral Health.

Flick is a former advisor of former Senator Hillary Clinton and specializes in education policy.

Holwerda is the owner and managing director for Ferguson Wellman Capital Management.

Hornecker has worked as an investment manager at the Bank of California.

Seeley is a chief administrative officer, executive vice president and chief of staff at Oregon Health & Science University.

Worden is a former staffer for Congressman David Wu and is a member of the Coeur d’Alene tribe.

PUT OFF YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES FOR AS LONG AS POSSIBLE Bowman: Life’s too short to do homework on a Saturday.

Spring quarter has finally arrived — birds sing, flowers bloom and UO students lie out on the grass soaking in the much-needed vitamin D they missed out on during the winter. Although the sun is finally peeking through, anxiety looms like a dark cloud over the student body. Spring break, as blissful as it may be, is tragically short, and few of us are looking forward to the return of classes. It’s back to Quizlet, lab reports, essays and not doing the readings from the textbook. And of course, we’re all doing what we promised ourselves we wouldn’t do: putting off what could be done today until tomorrow. The majority of us have been in school for upwards of 15 years, yet we still find ourselves starting the weekend’s work on Sunday night and sending in our papers 1 minute before their midnight deadline.

In the constant battle between procrastination and productivity, procrastination reigns victorious.

So why do we continue to fight a war we know we’re going to lose? It’s time to let go of the shame and guilt

surrounding procrastination. We need to start putting off our work for as long as possible.

We’ve all heard the reasons as to why we shouldn’t procrastinate. Year after year, parents, teachers and professors reiterate the same idea: It’s good to get a project or paper out of the way so you can stop worrying about it and enjoy your time. This is fairly intuitive. If a paper is assigned on Tuesday, and I successfully complete it by Thursday, then I have a whole weekend free to do what I please.

For me, however, this doesn’t work out. Instead, if I attempt to do my paper well in advance of the due date, the lack of pressure prevents me from doing work. I twiddle my thumbs, scroll through my phone and take 3 hours to do 30 minutes of work.

I’ve turned down plans and pushed back my other responsibilities only to get little done and waste hours of my time. Worse still, I feel the guilt and stress of having attempted and failed to complete an assignment.

Although the quest to complete work ahead of the due date may seem like a noble pursuit, procrastination is not the villain we’ve made it out to be. Instead, it can actually increase both problem solving and productivity. Tasks generally take up the amount of time an individual has allotted for them. This is a phenomenon known as Parkinson’s Law. An essay written in class may only take 50 minutes to complete.

Write that same essay outside of class, and it could take multiple hours over the course of many days. Start the essay 45 minutes before it's due, and the pressure of the deadline pushes you to finish your paper in record time.

Procrastination can also help you complete all of the other tasks you have been putting off. My apartment is always the cleanest when there’s an essay I should be writing, and I cook my most complex meals during finals week. These side projects could be considered an attempt to delay a more urgent task. It turns out, however, these less important chores may have helped me in doing my work later on.

A 2004 study compared the difference between conscious and unconscious thought. Experimenters showed participants several similar apartments, with one being slightly superior to the others in cost, location and amenities. They asked participants which apartment they would most want to rent.

Those who were first distracted with a 3 minute task made a more accurate decision about the apartments than those who were asked to decide immediately or given 3 minutes to deliberate. It seems as though distracting yourself before an assignment can sometimes be the key to better problem solving and decision making. Spending too much time considering an assignment or planning in advance may not be as helpful as previously thought.

When considering the amount of work that lies ahead, it can be tempting to get some of it done before it’s due. We’ve been conditioned to believe that we should delay gratification and prioritize our future selves over our current selves. Instead, I believe we should take advantage of the time we have on Earth right now. Don’t waste your weekends on assignments when you should be on your phone, in front of the TV or drinking with friends. On Sunday night, you might regret that you neglected your homework and chose to spend the weekend messing around. But by Monday, you’ll be glad you did.

When you look back on your life, you won’t cherish the moments where you chose to be responsible and finish Monday’s work in advance. Instead, you’ll smile fondly in remembrance of the plans you said yes to.

So go outside and enjoy the sun. Your homework will still be there when you get back.

IDENTITY-BASED HOUSING COMMUNITIES HELP SUPPORT FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS

BY EVAN REYNOLDS • TWITTER @_EVANREYNOLDS The pivot to college life, both socially and academically, can be uncomfortable and abrupt — with a packed schedule, new environments to acclimate to and, for some, a new city to call home.

To help ease the transition for those who live on campus at UO, particularly first-year students who are required to do so, UO has created a wide array of housing communities. Residential Communities (RC), student housing cohorts put together based on shared interests, values or identities, offer a variety of events and activities. Academic Residential Communities, while similar, also require these student cohorts to participate in seminars and classes together.

If you’re coming to UO with a lot of uncertainty, not at all sure about what it’s going to be like on campus, these communities are a really safe and awesome way to help that transition.”

Led by UO students and faculty, these communities also bolster student well-being via cohort events, study groups, faculty mentorship and opportunities to participate in events like the Undergraduate Research Symposium that may typically be out of reach for first-year students, according to Winders.

Five of UO’s housing communities are identity-based, which can present a unique sense of community and safety for students belonging to the respective groups. These communities provide a unique sense of identity-based community and safety that work to build interpersonal connections and resources for their students — a goal that has been maintained throughout the pandemic.

While most housing communities have a common area and various characteristics in common, each has its own unique structure, priorities and events.

According to Winders, the teams in charge of these programs are often composed of “stakeholders” that can contribute to the ARCs’ and RCs’ ongoing success and help meet the goals and needs of their students.

For identity-based communities, these stakeholders often reflect the demographic that the community represents, enabling them to more effectively advocate for students’ needs.

Audrey Lucero, a UO associate professor of education and the director of UO’s Latinx Studies program, is a stakeholder in the Latinx ARC. As one of the ARC’s faculty directors, one of her top priorities is to connect students with Latinx groups and faculty that can help them through the rest of their college experience.

“We’re trying to build community early in their career so they can grow and blossom,” Lucero said.

“That can mean connecting them with faculty/staff who also identify as Latinx, to see that we are there to support them and as a resource… that can also mean helping them get connected to other students and groups on campus like MEChA, Mujeres and

anywhere where they particularly feel they can find community.”

Many students — with a wide range of lived experiences — join ARCs and RCs looking to meet others with similar backgrounds. Lucero said students coming from more diverse areas like Woodburn, Oregon might be shocked by UO’s less diverse population, while others from predominantly White high schools or certain rural areas might have never had the opportunity to find community in that way.

“So many of the applications we get are people coming from small towns, rural towns, conservative areas or families where they’re not necessarily comfortable being themselves,” Jason Anajovich, the student coordinator for the LGBTQIA+ Scholars ARC, said. “Knowing that every person around you to some degree understands you, and can empathize with what you’ve gone through, is such a different experience for so many people.”

Applying for housing communities Students can apply for ARCs and RCs when filling out their housing registration forms. Each housing community asks students to answer two questions specific to the community, which are then reviewed by the individual teams that lead the ARC or RC,

Finding solidarity in identity Four of these identity-based housing communities are ARCs — Latinx Scholars, LGBTQIA+ Scholars, Native American & Indigenous Studies and Umoja Black Scholars — while one, the Gender Expansive Residential Community, is an RC. These communities can help provide students with resources and connections in support of their identities that they might not have otherwise found so early on in their college careers.

For Emma Howard, a UO student and the programmatic support assistant for the Gender Expansive Residential Community, identity-based ARCs and RCs often function as critical safe spaces for marginalized groups.

“For trans and non-binary folks in my community, there’s a lot of harmful and destabilizing legislation and rhetoric being pushed out across the country right now,” Howard said. “It’s important to have a space where they feel safe, and there are a lot of cool

according to Lucero and Winders. With a limited number of slots available, particularly for ARCs which also have limited classroom space for required courses, not everyone who applies is guaranteed admission.

“We’re looking for genuine answers, and trying to find those students who are going to really benefit from being in the community, and really invest their time into creating that cohort and getting the academic components out of the community,” Winders said. “We’re working on making space for more students… some ARCs have more applications than there are slots to live on campus, or participate in the classroom, while others have a lot of room and we’re trying to get the word around.”

While identity-based communities are not necessarily exclusive to students belonging to said identity, applicants should not enter them in an extractive mindset — hoping to be educated by their residents or get something novel out of the experience, Howard said.

“We absolutely allow folks who are not trans or gender non-conforming if they can show their dedication to the well-being of the community,” Howard said. “It’s maybe not a space for folks who simply want to learn more about gender expansive folks, or for cis folks to come in and try and be better allies — we don’t want to put that burden on our community.”

Likewise, applicants should be mindful of the purpose and goals of the ARC they choose to apply for, Lucero said.

“There are certainly people in the ARC even now who do not identify as Latinx,” Lucero said. “But it is not designed as a platform for us to educate

others about the experience of being Latinx at the University of Oregon.”

Learning to connect remotely Although housing communities have continued their services throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the realities of virtual events and the pandemic’s impacts on student mental health have posed difficulties for students and faculty. Shifting guidelines around mask mandates and public health measures have forced ARCs and RCs to make difficult decisions.

“Programming has been a bit of a rollercoaster this year, so the majority of the events I’ve planned have been virtual,” Anajovich said. “That in turn has influenced student engagement because at this point who really wants to go to another virtual event?”

In spite of pandemic-related concerns, students have often found comfort in participating in their housing communities, virtually or not.

“We’ve heard from students that it meant a lot to have a community that they belonged to during the pandemic, especially during periods where they couldn’t be on campus or be in-person for most activities,” Winders said.

Looking to the future Housing communities are hoping to use the continued shift toward in-person activities to offer a broader array of activities and events for its students to participate in.

“For next term, we’re hoping to transition to more outdoor-based activities; the weather might be nicer,

COVID might be less of a concern and so on, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed,” Anajovich said.

The pandemic has also prevented housing communities from engaging with other groups and organizations on campus to the same extent as before. The transition away from virtual events could open up new opportunities for cross-campus cooperation for ARCs and RCs. “I think a lot more partnership and collaboration is something that I’m looking forward to for next year,” Lucero said. “For instance, [before COVID-19] we tended to partner with the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art to provide a hands-on artistic engagement opportunity for students, but we haven’t been able to do things like that the past two years… I’d also like to see collaborations with other ARCs, and opportunities to engage with others outside of the ARC as a whole.”

In spite of ongoing pandemic uncertainty, Howard still believes that identity-based housing communities are a net positive for incoming students.

“It’s an amazing opportunity to live surrounded by people who are similar to you, who might be able to help you navigate your unique identities and experiences because they’ve gone through something similar themselves,” Howard said.

“It’s also a great opportunity to make close and meaningful friends at UO after two years where that has been significantly harder.”

Students can begin applying to housing communities once admitted to the university as part of their housing registration in the spring.

While they may be interested in several ARCs and RCs, they are only permitted to apply to one at a time. Interested students can visit the UO Housing website for more information.

AN ODE TO EUGENE, WALKABLE COMMUNITIES AND PUBLIC TRANSPORT Aghel: The beauty of Eugene is subtle, but we can do better.

BY PARSA AGHEL • TWITTER @PARSALONA1 About once a month, I make the drive from my house in Eugene to my home in Portland (which is really Beaverton, though my zip code says otherwise).

I do not mind driving, but after three years of making the bleak journey along I-5, it has become a rather exhausting process. On top of that, my home outside of Eugene, though filled with family and always pleasant experiences, lacks the same…what is the word?

Je ne sais quoi.

The French phrase, meaning “I don’t know what,” describes Eugene’s imperceptible quality. You see, I did not like Eugene for a long time. But over time, something, some variable, factor or facet of this markedly smaller city has nestled its way into my heart. Rather than only looking at the next city I hope to go to someday, I often think about how much I will miss my community and experience in Eugene.

It began during my sophomore year. I lived off campus on its east side. Specifically, I lived in the Skybox, which is a disgrace to Eugene’s subtle beauty.

That building can go to ruin for all I care, but I digress. My great appreciation for Eugene began with my first experience on the EmX bus service.

The Lane Transit District’s central and most prominent bus route was my first taste of the brilliance of centrally planned public transport and its benefits. I could get to campus in no time, and use the map to go anywhere else without trouble. There was something inexplicably calming about knowing a bus would show up every 7 minutes without fail at the Villard Street stop. The ineffable happiness I experienced from Eugene’s public transport is not indescribable though. Multiple studies have linked satisfaction with life to proximity to public transportation. They find that the presence of “convenient, comfortable, fast rail and bus transport” correlates with health, access to Medicare and healthier food among other benefits.

transportation though. After my second year, my roommates and I moved to the southwest side of campus. While no longer on the EmX route, the benefits of central planning did not end. Even without the bus, the Eugene community is well designed to allow for high walkability. Eugene’s Central Services describes neighborhoods with high walkability as “20-minute neighborhoods,” or those where residents have easy access to everyday destinations like schools, grocery stores and parks without having to use a car. The city recently compiled a 20-minute neighborhood map using the above factors and more to examine the city’s success in providing residents this type of neighborhood. Using the city’s heat map that ranks the composite score from low to high, Eugene scores very high for several blocks around the University and maintains a pretty high score until one reaches West Eugene.

Walkable communities, like public transportation, spur health benefits as well. A study by Jenny Roe, a professor of Architecture at the University of Virginia, confirms this. She found that urban planned communities that prioritized walkability are correlated with reduced depression and lowered chances of dementia and cognitive health decline in the long term.

This beauty I began to appreciate in Eugene over the years, then, is not unfounded. Central planning alongside public transportation investment makes a tangible difference. But Eugene can be better. For one thing, Eugene is mainly accessed by I-5. And the bus stops are extensive but do not cover the entire city.

While bikes are more common in Eugene than other cities, cars still dominate the street.

Though it may seem like an odd parallel, Eugene can learn a lot from Barcelona’s city design. While Eugene is centered around UO, Barcelona is centered around the Barcelona Cathedral in a similar urban grid design. Barcelona recently sought to prioritize the city’s pedestrians. Salvador Rueda, who started

the Urban Ecology Agency of Barcelona, began a process known as “superblocks” in 2019. These blocks are designed to eliminate motor traffic by devoting the street to pedestrians and bikers. Spain also boasts the most robust network of high-speed railways in Europe. While an Amtrak ticket from Eugene to Portland can cost just as much as a gas tank, Spanish subsidization and investment into high-speed rail has driven demand up for public transportation such that a ticket from Barcelona to Madrid, a journey almost three times as far as Eugene to Portland , would cost less than 10 dollars.

One may point to the Amtrak and that *one* street in downtown Eugene that *sometimes* cars cannot pass through. It is not enough. Just two weeks ago, the Eugene Weekly reported the shortages of bus drivers for LTD and the consequences for public transportation. Bill Bradley, executive board officer for the LTD union, instead vowed that LTD would serve the community “even if it means running their employees a little hard.” We shouldn’t have to. With investment into transportation infrastructure and higher pay for an essential facet of our city, we can support employees and boost demand for the services.

I honestly did not think much of Eugene when I first got here. But those imperceptible qualities that have made me appreciate it are simply byproducts of foresight and improved city planning. It’s just not perfect, yet.

SPRING FOOTBALL PREVIEW: OFFENSIVE LINE

A veteran offensive line group will set the tone for Oregon’s offense.

BY AARON HEISEN • TWITTER @AARON_HEISEN Holistically, the Oregon football team is experiencing a youth movement.

That is, apart from the offensive line group. The Ducks welcome back seven linemen who saw action last season.

The only starter they lost was George Moore — who played in 13 of the Ducks’ 14 games — making this the steadiest positional group heading into spring practices.

Under former head coach Mario Cristobal the Ducks were a run-first and run-heavy team. They went at a slow pace and the offensive line shouldered a heavy load opening gaps for the running backs and keeping a tight pocket for the quarterbacks.

Behind their sturdy offensive line, the Ducks were second in the Pac-12 in rushing yards and third in passing yards.

Head coach Dan Lanning and offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham intend to run a much different offensive scheme — one that involves a faster pace of play meaning more snaps per game. Even with the change in the scheme, a strong offensive line will be the foundation of the Ducks' offense.

Biggest storyline: adaptation To be successful this season the Ducks will need the offensive line to quickly adapt to Lanning and Dillingham’s vision. Taking reps in the new-look offense during spring practices is a good start.

Apart from the offensive line, the Ducks are very young. Therefore, the offensive line will be looked at as leaders. If they’re able to adapt to the new offense soundly, the rest of the team should follow suit.

Coach: Adrian Klemm Lanning and Dillingham will work with Adrian Klemm to help change the look of the Ducks' offense. Klemm is fresh off a two-year coaching stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers where he led them to the Pro Football Focus’ No. 9 ranked offensive line in 2019 and 2020.

Klemm also has experience with coaching some of the conference’s best offensive linemen. At UCLA he recruited and coached Xavier Su’aFilo and Jeff Baca, who were part of a Bruins squad that went 10-3 and won the Sun Bowl. In the NFL, Klemm had the opportunity to work with Alejandro Villanueva and Maurkice Pouncey.

Klemm will replace Alex Mirabal, one of the Ducks’ most successful and longest-tenured positional coaches, who finished the last offseason with the No. 1 recruiting class by position in the Pac-12.

Figurehead player: Alex Forsyth Yes, Alex Forsyth is still eligible.

Forsyth returns to Oregon for his fifth-year senior season. Before announcing his return, the center ranked No. 21 in the nation at the position for NFL prospects. Forsyth has played for the Ducks for the last four seasons; a starter for two of those.

He struggled with injuries last season, only appearing in nine games.

Forsyth will provide experience to a rather young Ducks squad. He’s had the opportunity to play in four bowl games through those four seasons.

The Ducks fell short in the two bowl games that Forsyth started, but those postseason minutes are something a large part of this roster doesn’t possess.

X-Factor/player to watch: Ryan Walk The hometown kid, the walk-on. Left guard Ryan Walk has ascended the depth chart since joining the team. He started nine games last season and all seven in 2020.

Sometimes the guard position doesn’t get as much love as it should because the tackles protect the blindside and the center commands the attention. Walk, however, was a focal point for the Ducks' offense, especially when Byron Cardwell was in the backfield.

Cardwell excels as a between the tackle runner, and Walk will pave the way for Cardwell this season.

SPRING FOOTBALL PREVIEW: RUNNING BACKS

Cardwell looks to take the next step as the presumed No. 1 back in 2022.

With CJ Verdell injured, freshman running back Byron Cardwell realized more in-game responsibility last season, starting against Colorado.

On Colorado’s 34 yard line, Cardwell lined up in the backfield, in search of his first collegiate score. As soon as Cardwell got the ball, a huge gap in the line formed and he burst through it. He ran untouched into the end zone as he put the Ducks up two touchdowns in the first quarter.

“I have a lot of confidence in my O-line. I know they are going to get their assignment,” Cardwell said.

“My biggest thing is finding where the safety is on the field, so I look for the safety, find my reads, let my O-line do the work and I’ll finish the rest.”

It’s these types of plays that helped Cardwell emerge in his first season, and what has him primed for an explosive rise this year. With new offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham onboard, the running back position will be one poised for huge plays come next fall.

Biggest storyline: Dillingham’s effectiveness in the run game Dillingham’s offenses have been electric everywhere he has stepped foot, but it’s his run attack that stands out.

Dating back to 2018, during his stint with Memphis, Dillingham led the Tigers to 3,919 rushing yards, a program record. Memphis also landed fourth nationally in rushing yards per game (279.9) and PA G E 1 6

second in rushing touchdowns (48).

Behind these numbers were running backs Darryl Henderson Jr., Patrick Taylor and Tony Pollard.

Henderson and Taylor combined for 3,031 rushing yards and 38 rushing touchdowns that season, absolutely dominating the ground game. Pollard also went for over 550 yards and six touchdowns as the third option. Henderson and Pollard both got drafted the following year.

Not to the same extent, but this theme continued for Dillingham in his next year in Florida State, his team ranking 20th in yards per rush (5.11) and rushing yards per game (199.9).

With weapons like Cardwell, Dollars and James, Dillingham has a whole new arsenal of tools to spark another top-20 rush offense.

Coach: Carlos Locklyn Newly hired running backs coach Carlos Locklyn will be a great complement to Dilligham’s offense, as the two were at Memphis and Florida State at the same time.

Locklyn was just the director of high school relations at both schools before he took on his first collegiate coaching job last year as Western Kentucky’s running backs coach. He assisted them to 44.2 points per game, which ranked second in the nation.

Locklyn and Dilligham will be great for the running back room, as Cardwell will presumably have most of the in-game attention.

Figurehead player: Byron Cardwell As a freshman last year, Cardwell rushed for 417 yards for three touchdowns with a season average of 6.8 yards per carry. Cardwell started the season slow, playing behind CJ Verdell and Travis Dye, but a 127 yard game against Colorado gave him more responsibility in the rush attack for the rest of the season.

With Dye and Verdell moving on from Oregon, Cardwell has an opportunity to have a huge year as the number one option, especially with the coaching experience behind him.

X factor/player to watch: Sean Dollars Dollars is also a difference maker and someone people forgot about after missing the entirety of the 2021 season.

As a freshman in 2020, Dollars gave Duck fans a sneak peak into his potential as he made a huge difference in the Pac-12 championship game against USC. Coming off injury, Dollars has a huge comeback season ahead.

With Dillingham’s tendency to spread the carries around, expect Dollars to have a major impact on the run offense in 2022.

With no Verdell and Dye, the core group of Ducks running backs looks different for the 2022 season.

However, with promising coaching experience and highly touted backs, this could be one of the Ducks’ most explosive positions next year.
