how how to to plan plan aa spring spring break break trip trip Words and Photos by Lauren Bruce
For many, week 8’s snowy reprieve became a break from classes of its own. The campus closure brought boogie boards as makeshift sleds, jubilous dogs bouncing through the snow in front of Lillis and even the duck statue got its own snow duck built beside it. But now, with the scheduled break approaching, it’s time to plan for spring break trips UO students will be embarking on before classes resume in Spring Term. Here’s a guide for planning a road trip that’ll reward you after winter finals.
1. set a budget You’re going to need at least a tentative budget for all aspects of your trip. This means accounting for gas, gear, food, lodging and for some even time. If you can only take off a few days of work, and only spend so much on a campsite or room, then budget this accordingly. This might mean a shorter trip or a shorter distance, but in the end you’ll get the most out of your trip if you’re not strapped for cash.
2. look at a map and set up a time frame Southern Oregon and Northern California will be cold and snowy during spring break, so if you’re looking for more of what week 8 brought, you might consider a ski or snowboard trip down to Mount Shasta or over to Mount Bachelor. The Outdoor club rents snowboard gear for $20 a day, with discounted prices for multiple day trips. Based on your price range for break, you might want to look into Airbnb’s and stay a few days. Keep in mind food will run up your budget. Central and Northern California will keep you warmer and dryer. Depending on how far of a drive you’re willing to take, state parks will really reep the rewards, and make camping an easier option as well. The sooner you decide what temps and locations you’re after, the better. Campsites and Airbnb’s often book up fast.
3. pick your stops Maybe there’s something you want to see along the way like a landmark, town or monument. At this point in your planning, maybe you’ve decided to stop and see the Golden Gate Bridge on your way down to Joshua Tree. In my case, I’m stopping to see my dad for his birthday on my way down through California. Whatever the reason, you’re going to need (and want) to make some stops. Every 200 miles or so you’ll need to stop for gas and relief, so plan this out accordingly. It saves time and money to pick out your stops in advance. Also, if you did want to stop at a certain place (like the Golden Gate Bridge) you might not want end up there from 4-7pm or you’ll hit major rush hour nightmares.
4. before you hit the road Professors of wilderness survival at the UO highly encourage taking safety precautions before any and every trip. You should always give someone your itinerary, so they know where you’re going and how long it should take you. In case you end up somewhere without service and something happens to you, search and rescue will know where to start looking for you. By planning your trip well you’ll not only have a more successful and cheaper time, but you’ll also be safer by informing a friend or family member where you’ll be.

HOW TO CURATE YOUR
WARDROBE ON A BUDGET!
with align magazine Words by Sophie Bange | Photo by Katy Larson
I started 2019 on a mission to curate my wardrobe. I felt overwhelmed by my cluttered closet, was tired of holding on to things I never wear, and wanted to commit to an aesthetic that feels truly me. Fashion is one of the best ways to express yourself, but it’s not always easy to do that on a student budget. Here are some tips and tricks I’ve learned that will hopefully help you on your own journey towards a revamped wardrobe and heightened self-expression.
make a vision board It sounds cheesy, I know, but hear me out. Gathering pictures of clothing items, color schemes, or makeup looks that you love will help keep your vision in mind. If you don’t have a collection of fashion magazines to deconstruct with a pair of scissors, Pinterest is your new best friend. The free browser extension lets you save images from your favorite Instagram influencers or online shopping sites onto a virtual board. Just don’t get carried away; keeping this board small (around 10-20 pictures) will force you to really refine your style, so you aren’t replacing clutter with more clutter.
clean it out... Marie Kondo style Speaking of clutter, “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo” came right when I needed it. Just thinking about the stash of styles I’ve accumulated over the years made me anxious. Kondo recommends taking everything off their hangers and out of your drawers, creating a clothing mountain on your bed. Then, look at each piece individually and ask, “Does this spark joy?” The idea that your belongings should bring you joy is so liberating- it has really made me question my relationship to my belongings and my purchasing habits, and transformed my view of consumerism. Don’t be afraid to be brutal during this step: if you don’t wear it, if it doesn’t feel like ‘you,’ if it doesn’t spark joy, it’s got to go. Life can be messy, but your closet doesn’t have to be.

your money back... ( somewhat ) guaranteed Once you’ve separated what sparks joy from what doesn’t, sort through what you’re letting go of. It’s great to donate what you can, but as penny-pinching students, selling your clothes can add to your budget for new items. The easiest way to earn a little cash is to take your in-season styles to Plato’s Closet or Buffalo Exchange, which will give you cash or store credit for a fraction of each item’s selling price. But if you have the time and are willing to put in a little more effort, selling online can get you a higher return. Consider listing high-quality vintage or thrifted pieces on Depop (basically a thrift store in app form), or sell newer items from well-known retailers on Poshmark or ThredUp. Just keep a close eye on site policies, commission, shipping rates, the original price of the item and the value of your time in mind when settling on a price.
shop with intention I sometimes find myself thumbing through thrift store racks or scrolling through online shops just looking for something to want. In order to get out of this habit, look at what you already have. Ask yourself, what’s missing from my wardrobe? Do I need a few basics, like a go-to cozy hoodie, or a long-lasting pair of jeans? Make a list, then seek those specific pieces out. Shopping with intention will save you time and money, as well as the regret of buying something you rarely wear.
build up on basics Start with basic pieces, especially if you’re just trying out different styles. Once you’ve got a feel for your aesthetic, go for statement pieces. Yes, I’m talking about those pinstripe conductor overalls you’ve been eyeing for months. No, do not hesitate to buy that plaid blazer that evokes your inner lady boss. Maybe it’s finally time to treat yourself to those wild platform boots you’ve been ogling. Whatever it is, consider putting a few dollars aside each month for statement pieces, which will force you to really think about them before investing, and make it all the more exciting once you finally do.
last but not least, be honest with yourself Clothing is such a powerful form of self-expression. Your clothing speaks to who you are, and it can also speak to who you want to be. What image do you want to put out into the world? If you’ve never thought about it before, it may take some looking around and experimenting with styles. But the most important thing to do when curating your closet is to be honest with yourself about what you love, what you’re comfortable in, and what feels genuinely you.

BETA FISH Beta fish are beautiful. They are iridescent, colorful fish that have fins so graceful you can get caught up in their beauty and miss class. They make great companions, and even sometimes show real personality which is hard to find in a fish! They’re amazing friends, but you do have to keep a few things in mind. •
DO NOT pair them with other beta fish, honestly, it is in your best interest to keep them alone, or maybe a snail. Contrary to their name, Beta fish are actually Alphas. If they see another of their kind, it will be a fight to the death. You don't want to come home and put two together only to find the next morning you only have one. • If you get a lil beta but you want it to have company, get a moss ball or other underwater plants. This will give your tank life, and keep your beta happy. • DO NOT get them a tank too small. If you get any tank smaller than one gallon, your beta can become depressed, and we don't want that! You want your beta to be able to explore and find new hiding spots from time to time. On that note, change up the scenery somewhat often to keep him or her entertained. Fun Fact: If you want a really great relationship with your beta fish, you can teach them tricks and reward them with food!
Taking care of something other than just yourself can seem a little tricky, especially around finals week. Although this can seem intimidating, bringing life into your own routine can be super beneficial for both your mental and emotional health. With this being said, if you bring in plants or animals into your life, make sure to do it correctly! It can be a bit more time consuming than it seems. If you are thinking about getting a small animal or plant and making it your best friend, look no further! Here are some tricks and tips to keep both of you happy.
cats Cats and humans have been associated for nearly 10000 years. These beautiful creatures can be some of the most cuddly and curious creatures out there, though they do require a good amount of work and need some good loving. • Cats can adjust pretty easily, although it will take them a couple of months to really understand what is happening when you’ve moved. Be prepared for this process before you make any major changes. • Make sure to keep their litter box clean, so they know exactly where their box is and aren’t tempted to go anywhere else too often. Be ready to clean up a couple of accidents, because they may be confused! • Give them cuddles when you can! They’re loving animals, so they need to know you love them too despite the popular idea that cats are isolated and independant. Even the most regal kitty needs some love.
rabbits Tiny little baby bunnies are some of the cutest animals on earth. They’re fluffy, small, gentle and oh so loveable. They can’t be that hard to take care of, right? Wrong! They are so intriguing, and from a distance can seem like such a wonderful pet, though they require so much time, energy and even cash. Not saying that they aren’t rewarding whatsoever, they absolutely are. Before getting a bunny read the warnings below! • • • • •
Cleaning their litter box 1-2 times a week is necessary if you want a good smelling home/room. Taking them to the vet can cost upward of about 70 dollars per trip. Neutering a bunny costs anywhere from $175-360 depending on where you go. Buying food is a weekly thing, they love munchin’! They like to chew! Make sure all chords and things you don't want chewed up are hidden and put away. M O N D AY, M A R C H 1 8 , 2 0 1 9

IT’S TIME TO GET
YOUR
St. Patrick’s Day is one of the highly cherished holidays for my mom’s side of the family. In my family, when you wake up on the seventeenth of March, you better put some article of green clothing on right away or else someone might come up and pinch you in that brief period of time that you lounge in your pajamas. Every year from family members, I hear the story about the reason we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day: St Patrick rove all the snakes out of Ireland by getting them to follow him and his flute. Apparently before that Ireland had had a serious problem with snakes. They were just everywhere terrorizing the people of Ireland. My grandpa on my mother’s side is an immigrant from Belfast, Ireland. He spent the first seven years of his life living in Belfast while his mom was taking care of her sick aunt. It rubbed off on him, and he has a lot of Irish pride and pronounces some things differently. For example, he says “warsh” instead of “wash.” Because of this, my grandpa is the most spirited of all when it comes to St. Patrick’s Day. Every year my grandpa makes sure to have a St. Patrick’s Day party where he invites all of his family friends. After a while, my aunt started following the same tradition. For most of my life, my aunt invited family members and all her close friends over for a potluck party on the weekend of St. Patrick’s Day. To prepare for this, my grandpa stows away to the kitchen to bake up four loaves of Irish Soda Bread. “Each Irish family has a different way of making Soda Bread,” he shared with me once as I helped him bake. “My grandmother used to bake a couple loaves everyday and she would make sure to always have soda bread or tea ready incase we had any guests over.” After the guests start arriving, my grandpa occupies himself with making Irish Coffees for all the adults, while putting some away himself. And yes, they are alcoholic.

ON
Most of the people my aunt invited to the St. Patrick Day celebrations were middle aged friends of hers with little kids. The young children would separate themselves by gender. All the boys would congregate and connive on how to terrorize the similarly aged girls. The children would run around making noise while the adults mingled and laughed and ignored them. St. Patrick’s Day in Irish families is not just a celebration of heritage, but it’s used as an excuse to bring people together. Irish people put a huge emphasis on family and that can be shown in an authentic Irish St. Patrick’s Day celebration. There’s never a St. Patrick’s Day party where people are in a bad mood or feeling excluded. Everyone is amiable and ready to engage in conversation—maybe due to the large amounts of Irish Coffees being consumed—and you can hear laughter from every room you walk into. The moral of thise story is, you don’t need to dye your hair green and drink alcohol until you puke in order to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. A much more authentic way you can celebrate is by surrounding yourself with people you care about and concocting some traditional Irish dishes like corn beef and cabbage or Irish soda bread. St. Patrick’s Day is really all about being with people who you are close with because doing that reflects the Irish values of family and hospitality.

Spring is coming and with it comes the feeling of fresh, new beginnings and hope. With the snow melting and some sunshine peeking through on rainy Eugene days, the desire for a fresh start is common. Fresh starts can come in many forms: a new hobby, new friends, or being more concerned with the environment we live in. Whatever reinventing yourself means to you, you can make a fresh start in your life with these simple steps.
get in touch with your body Things like yoga and meditation are great ways to renew your body and destress. Sit in a quiet place with no distractions and close your eyes. Breathe in and out deeply, focusing on your breathing and nothing else. Set a timer on your phone for 5 to 10 minutes or more so you are not looking at the time. Meditate a little every day to feel at peace with yourself and renewed in your body.
try something new There’s a reason why bucket lists are so popular. They are all about taking risks and trying something new. Maybe it’s something that scares you, or maybe it’s something you’ve always wanted to do but never thought possible. Whether it’s learning archery, visiting a city you’ve never been to before, or going on an African safari, your bucket list items are attainable if you set goals for yourself. Take archery lessons, fly out to Boston, or save up for that trip to Africa. Anything is possible if you set goals and take risks.
declutter your environment Declutter your dorm room, car, and whatever other space you have to declutter your mind as well. Schedule a day or weekend to do some serious tidying and deep cleaning. Clean the inside and outside of your car, do laundry, and clean out your backpack. By decluttering, you’ll make more space for something new and will live a less stressed life.
set yourself up for success In order to set yourself up for success, you need to break old habits and form new, positive ones. While saying you want to do something is a good start, you need to set attainable goals in order to make steps towards that big success. By making tiny goals you can take small steps on every day, you’ll be able to work towards the future in a realistic way. If you’re wanting to work out more, make a goal of working out at a certain time every night during the school week. Ask a friend to go to the gym with you so you have motivation to achieve your goals.
remeet old friends As we go through important milestones in our lives, like college graduation, we often think about our past and the people who helped shape it. Maybe months or even years have gone by since you’ve talked to or seen these old friends. If you’re missing good friends from your past, they could be beneficial in your future. Reach out and say hi with a text, Facebook message or DM on Instagram. Ask to meet up if you both live in the area and see if there can be a renewed friendship there.
pay attention to your guilty pleasures Is there a certain something you just have to buy whenever you’re out shopping? This item could be a good clue of what kind of hobby you should pursue. If you buy clothes often, you might think about learning how to knit or sew. If you have a good collection of paintings, you might consider painting your own masterpiece.
meet new people If you want to make new friends, you have to put yourself in situations to meet new people. The next time you go to a party or event on campus, make a goal of talking to at least three people you’ve never met before. Odd are you will make at least one new friend. By having this goal, you will by default become more outgoing and approachable.
