WHAT IS 25 DUCKS? With over 23,000 students at the University of Oregon, multiple students have been selected by their peers, professors and University of Oregon staff for the opportunity to win the prize of being a 25 Duck. The award is bestowed upon individuals who show impressive leadership, innovation and passion, and after a month-long nomination period, a panel of students and professionals from the Alumni Center, the Emerald Media Group and The Duck Store selected 25 students to represent this year’s winners.

The 25 diverse students come from all around the world. With varying major focuses and extracurricular involvement, these outstanding Ducks are affecting amazing change throughout the campus. They are some of the most driven and enthusiastic individuals within their programs and workplaces, and serve as an inspiration to all those around them.

The University of Oregon fosters a community of passionate, hardworking students – and the Emerald Media Group is honored to have the opportunity to recognize these individuals.

The University is truly benefiting every day from the actions of these talented Ducks, and the passion of the following students is sure to benefit their future communities as well. Inside are the stories of 25 thoughtful, altruistic and ambitious students whom we are thrilled to welcome to the 25 Ducks family.

How do you hope to change the world?

I hope to inspire others to take leaps of faith and to wholeheartedly believe in themselves. I don’t think we should limit ourselves and our capabilities, and I believe that we should be able to do whatever we are passionate about. So many people in my life have inspired me and have allowed me to pursue my dreams because they helped me believe in myself. I want to be that champion for others so they know that they can achieve even their wildest dreams.

What are you proud to have been involved with at University of Oregon?

Over the last three years, I have had the opportunity to work for the UO Student Alumni Association. As the Director of Membership and Engagement, I’ve been able to welcome hundreds of new students to our association.

It’s been incredible watching this organization grow, especially because I know how much the SAA and its team have to offer. I owe so much of my experience to the students and staff that I’ve had the opportunity to work with, and I can’t imagine working with a different team. I am so proud of how this organization has grown and I am excited to see what the SAA does in the future. I am also proud to have been part of the UO Swim Club for two years, where I also served as treasurer.

Who has been your biggest supporter over the past year and why?

I’ve had so many supporters over the past year, so it’s hard to pick just one. I’d have to say that my friends and my family are my biggest supporters, and I couldn’t have gotten through this past year without them. My roommate in particular has been so supportive and puts up with my stress and tendency to overthink things. She’s my best friend and I’m so grateful to have her around.

Which fictional character is most like yourself?

According to a BuzzFeed quiz, I’m most like Leslie Knope from Parks and Rec. It says ‘you’re just like Leslie Knope herself! You’re determined, supportive, and the best friend a person could ask for. You always look for the best in others and refuse to give up. You have big dreams and an in-depth, multi-binder plan to make them a reality.

What are your goals after college?

After graduation, I will be staying in Eugene. I’m still in the process of figuring out what I want to do, but I am hoping to work somewhere within the realm of higher education.

What is the most interesting thing about you?

I can name all fifty states in alphabetical order in less than 20 seconds!

How do you hope to change the world?

I hope to create a better and more inclusive space in sports media for women and people of color. It is a very male dominated field and I’ve unfortunately had some really bad experiences with men making me feel like I didn’t belong. I don’t want anyone else to ever have to experience that feeling.

What are you proud to have been involved with at University of Oregon?

I’m most proud to have been involved in Duck TV. As an Executive Producer this year, we all had so much thrown at us with Covid and trying to manage everyone through it all. We sent reporters to the Pac-12 Championship, the Pac-12 Tournament and to our first ever March Madnesses. I got to go to San Antonio to cover the women’s tournament and learned so much.

While it’s been really hard, I’m so proud of everything we’ve accomplished and how I’ve gotten to see all my producers and reporters grow.

Who has been your biggest supporter over the past year and why?

My biggest supporter this year has been my boyfriend, Michael Strite. Throughout our entire relationship, he has always pushed me to be the best I can. He encouraged me to go out for Executive Producer, to try for things I didn’t think I would get and whenever I feel like I’ve fallen short he has still made me feel like I’m doing great. I can be very high strung and he is one of the few people in this world that can actually calm me down and make me feel better.

Which fictional character is most like yourself?

I would say the fictional character who is most like myself is Elle Woods. I think people can sometimes underestimate me because I’m really bubbly and blonde and can come off as a little ditzy sometimes. But I know that I’m so much more than those surface things and I can do anything I set my mind to. I’m also a fierce feminist who always tries to uplift other people and make the world a better place.

What are your goals after college?

My goals after college are to work in sports public relations for a major league team. Eventually, I would like to work internationally for a team. I also want to make sports a safer and more welcoming place for women and people of color from the behind the scenes perspective.

What motivates you in the face of adversity?

In the face of adversity, I am motivated by making the world a better place. Every time I’ve had someone ask me if I’m someone’s girlfriend or sister when in the sports world, I’m motivated by making it better for those who come after me. Whenever things get to be too overwhelming or I feel defeated, that always makes it better.

How do you hope to change the world?

I hope to change the world by creating new narratives around climate justice. I think it is important that everyone feels empowered when making changes in their daily habits to help the environment. Also, I don’t think people think about how climate change will affect all groups of people differently. It is time to start changing people’s mindsets towards understanding that a step towards climate justice is a forward step for us all.

What are you proud to have been involved with at University of Oregon?

I am proud to be involved in the Rising Project. This project, led by Deb Morrison, is creating campaigns that will change the world. The issues that we have addressed are Climate Justice and Voting. These are both pressing issues and I think advertising is the first step to changing society’s mindset on these issues.

Who has been your biggest supporter over the past year and why?

My biggest supporter is Siena Dorman. She has constantly pushed me to try my hardest and to wake up everyday with a smile on my face. She has given me constant motivation to keep working as hard as I possibly can, and I honestly can not thank her enough for all that she has done for me.

Which fictional character is most like yourself?

The fictional character that is most like myself is Donkey from Shrek. This is because he has a sense of humor but is always there when you need him most.

What are your goals after college?

My goals after college are to join an advertising agency that is working to change the world. I hope to work with like-minded creatives that are passionate about making the world a better place.

What is the most interesting thing about you?

The most interesting thing about me is that I am an amateur kazoo player. My uncle has a band and I have been on stage with him multiple times to show off my skills. I am not excellent at playing, but I find great joy in just getting up on stage and doing it.

What motivates you in the face of adversity?

What motivates me when facing adversity is knowing that these situations create growth. I think that the most important situations to put yourself in are those that make you uncomfortable. This is because the more uncomfortable you are, the more chance you have to learn; Learning is what life’s all about.

How do you hope to change the world?

I hope to change the world through a radical restructuring of outdated systems within our society -most notably the higher education system and criminal justice system -- to better serve the needs of overlooked and underserved populations.

What are you proud to have been involved with at University of Oregon?

I am most pleased with my involvement in OUTLaws, the LGBTQ+ student organization at the law school, and the Student Bar Association. I am also proud of my work in coordinating UO’s first completely remote ASUO student elections in 2020.

Who has been your biggest supporter over the past year and why?

My biggest supporters have been my family and friends, who consistently put up with me.

Which fictional character is most like yourself?

I am most like Nancy Drew.

What are your goals after college?

My goal post-grad was to enroll in law school, which I did! I just finished my second year and I am looking forward to my third and final year in Portland.

What is the most interesting thing about you?

My sense of humor is the most interesting thing about me.

What motivates you in the face of adversity?

I am most motivated when I see people in the community taking on leadership or advocacy roles they previously thought impossible.

How do you hope to change the world?

I hope to change the world by being the best person I can be. I used to have very lofty, idealistic plans about all the amazing things I was going to do to make a difference. I still have those convictions, but I suppose I want to recognize that sometimes loving yourself and loving others can change a small part of the world as well.

What are you proud to have been involved with at University of Oregon?

I am proud to have been involved in so many different activities at the University of Oregon, including Sigma Kappa, the Oxford Consortium, the Inside-Out program, and more. The one commitment that stands out to me right now is my two years as a Resident Assistant. It certainly wasn’t easy, but I met some incredible coworkers and residents. I learned a lot about teamwork and developed a paralyzing fear of a very specific ringtone.

Who has been your biggest supporter over the past year and why?

My biggest supporter this past year has undoubtedly been my mom. Since the pandemic started I have been living at home with my parents. It was a difficult transition because I felt like I was stuck and missing so much. I’ve always been close with my mom, but this year gave us time that we haven’t had together in years, when we both especially needed it. She has seen me through study abroad cancellations, job rejections, breakups, and more; I am so grateful for her endless support and understanding.

Which fictional character is most like yourself?

When I asked my mom which fictional character I am like the most, she said Jane Austen’s Emma. I think it might be because I watch too much British TV and keep trying to perfect my accent. But she elaborated that Emma is kind and clever, although sometimes stubborn. Additionally, Emma is mature in some ways, but naive in others. I too make mistakes, but never maliciously, and I like to think I’ve grown from them like Emma did.

What are your goals after college?

This summer, I am very excited to be interning with Congresswoman Bonamici’s offices in Oregon and D.C. Then, I hope to live in Spain for a year as a cultural ambassador and language teaching assistant.

I plan to eventually attend graduate school as well as start my career in the public service sector. I specifically want to work for the government or a nonprofit in international aid.

How do you hope to change the world?

I hope to change the world by designing intentionally inclusive spaces in our built environment. As a Planning, Public Policy, and Management major, my studies have been rooted in real-world impact. I am incredibly excited to act as an advocate for the creation of urban landscapes that acknowledge and celebrate histories, cultures, and communities. I believe reimagining how our cities are designed can be a source of resilience and hope for the future.

What are you proud to have been involved with at University of Oregon?

During my time at the UO, I am especially proud to have been involved with the Student Community Organization (known as SCO), a small student-led ASUO club that brings professional development and communitybuilding opportunities to students in the School of PPPM. After transferring to the UO as a sophomore, SCO gave me a sense of belonging within the major and connected me to peers that recognized my leadership potential.

As Event Planner, I was able to work on the design and execution of the 2020 Professional Development Fair that featured over 30 tabling organizations and over 100 student attendees. This school year, I was honored to take on the role of President, navigating leadership during a virtual COVID-19 reality.

Who has been your biggest supporter over the past year and why?

My biggest supporters over the past year have been my parents, my friends, and my co-worker Resident Assistants in Global Scholars Hall. Always proud of my passions and drive, my parents have never dimmed my light, only amplified it, encouraging me to follow wherever my interests lead. My friends, especially Natasha and Ashley, have had my back through it all. And finally, my co-workers in the dorms have been nothing short of extraordinary, showing up each day to a difficult job in ways that inspire me constantly. I would not be who I am without any of these lovely folks.

Which fictional character is most like yourself?

I aspire to be Carrie Bradshaw. In reality, I’m more a mix of Leslie Knope, Rory Gilmore, and Meredith Grey.

What are your goals after college?

After college, I hope to attend the University College London to earn a Master of Public Administration in Innovation, Public Policy, and Public Value. With it, I want to one day work as a Community Liaison or Creative Director for creative placemaking projects! I also plan on publishing a book of poetry, living in New York City, and owning a Newfoundland named Lewis.

What is the most interesting thing about you?

I lived in Campo Grande, Brazil for 11 months when I was 15!

What motivates you in the face of adversity?

I am motivated by a sense of radical hope that the world has potential to change. When facing adversity, I rely on this hope to sustain me. College has been nothing short of a roller-coaster, but knowing that I am learning and actively contributing to a better future, inspires me.

How do you hope to change the world?

I hope to make the outdoors more accessible to every person because nature should be enjoyed by everyone.

What are you proud to have been involved with at University of Oregon?

I’m proud to be involved with the outdoor program at UO where I was able to join in on trips with new people!

Who has been your biggest supporter over the past year and why?

My biggest supporter has been Ryan Nguyen, he’s my roommate and my best friend. He is the best human ever and a huge support.

Which fictional character is most like yourself?

I see myself in Walter Mitty (Ben Stiller) from the Secret Life of Walter Mitty. He takes his mundane life and makes it adventurous on his own terms.

What are your goals after college?

I plan on either working up on Mt. Hood in the forest service or possibly working in Norway and study cryoseismology.

What is the most interesting thing about you?

I could talk all day about the Cascadia Subduction Zone (the big earthquake), it’s my favorite subject!

What motivates you in the face of adversity?

I am motivated by knowing that regardless of the outcome, if I keep trying, I’ll at least gain a new experience.

Was there a time when you made a big mistake and then learned a lesson from it?

Not a singular mistake, but I used to not stand up for myself which had real consequences. I’ve learned that in life I am ultimately living for myself. Since then I’ve put myself first more often.

How do you hope to change the world?

Ever since I started my journey in the sports journalism/communications world, I quickly realized that there are not nearly enough females and womxn of color in the sports media space. Sports in general has a wide and vast audience space, and the media working for those leagues should reflect that. I am passionate about creating a bigger space for females of color in sports media because even though strides are being made, diversity should still be demanded in newsrooms, press boxes and front offices. Diversity in sports media is at a demand like never before, and from the previous and current landscape of this industry, it must be a priority.

What are you proud to have been involved with at University of Oregon?

I am incredibly proud to have been a sports writer at The Daily Emerald for the past three years. Being able to tell the stories of athletes here at Oregon while covering some of the nation’s best teams, I could not be more grateful. Holding a position as President/Chair of the Programs Finance Committee in ASUO has helped me advocate for student voices and student autonomy in higher education. I’m also proud to have held a leadership position with cultural groups such as the Asian Pacific American Student Union (APASU). The group is welcoming and provides a community for Asian-Americans.

Who has been your biggest supporter over the past year and why?

My biggest supporter is my mother because she is the most giving and hard-working person I have ever met.

As a first grade teacher, she had to quickly transition to teaching fully remote this past year and I applaud her for all the blood, sweat and tears she put into teaching first graders online for an entire year. My mother has given me unconditional support this past year and throughout my life and I cannot be more grateful for her.

Which fictional character is most like yourself?

When I was younger, I dressed up as Lilo from Lilo and Stitch for Halloween because she’s very adventurous, brave, strong-headed and a little rebellious too. She will do anything for the people she loves and I adore that!

What are your goals after college?

My goal after college is to enter the sports media and communications world! This summer, I’ll be interning as a sports writer for The Denver Post through the Sports Journalism Institute — a program that helps womxn and minorities kick start their career in sports media. My dream organization to work for is ESPN and/or in the NBA in their Communications department. Being in the sports world my entire life and now pursuing a career in that same space is amazing to me. I cannot wait to start my post-grad journey!

What is the most interesting thing about you?

I had the opportunity to interview the GOAT, Diana Taurasi. I have never been more nervous in my life than in that moment.

How do you hope to change the world?

I believe change comes both from little actions by individuals each day and from large systemic changes. I hope to be a leader in providing accessible and quality healthcare for all, specifically BIPOC and those who struggle to pay for private insurance. Without proper access to physical and mental health resources, people’s ability to make those small positive changes is diminished.

What are you proud to have been involved with at University of Oregon?

The thing I am most proud to have been involved in is the creation and success of the UO Corona Corps. The corps started at the University Health Center in June 2020 as a group of about 15 students doing contact tracing in order to assist Lane County Public Health during the COVID-19 outbreak. Today the corps employs over 50 students and it is still growing. It has also been developed to have a specific branch that caters to UO student’s needs through quarantine or isolation. This program was an astounding display of passion and dedication from students, faculty, community members, and public health officials. Being able to learn and engage with the public alongside this team has been an unforgettable experience.

Who has been your biggest supporter over the past year and why?

My biggest supporter over the past year has been my dog, Goose. With the transition to online school, we were together pretty much 24/7. She will lay at my feet during class, bring me a toy if I’m sad, or do something crazy and make me laugh. She doesn’t know it, but she’s made this year so much better.

Which fictional character is most like yourself?

I would say Katniss Everdeen from the Hunger Games is most like me. She would do anything for her sister or close family as would I. I also think we have a similar sense of integrity and are willing to stand up for things we believe in even if it isn’t the most popular option. .

What are your goals after college?

After college I will be starting a new position as a Medical Assistant in Portland. After gaining some experience, I hope to attend a Physician’s Assistant and Masters in Public Health program.

What is the most interesting thing about you?

My favorite Christmas gift I have ever received is the Gray’s Anatomy textbook. I was gifted it when I was about eight years old and it has come with me through all 4 years of college!

What motivates you in the face of adversity?

I am motivated by my mom, who was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis when I was 5. At the time I didn’t grasp the concept of what her diagnosis meant, but now I see the immense change it has brought. Despite her diagnosis, she has been not only a wonderful mother, but an exceptional nurse. The way she cares for her patients even on days where she is not feeling her best pushes me to keep going even when things get hard.

How do you hope to change the world?

I hope to change the world by always supporting others to be their true selves. Whether in leadership roles or supporting positions, people need to feel comfortable and safe being their authentic selves and be able to express their emotions, for others to see. For me, that’s what being a leader is. While this effect may not change the world, if I can look to help one person shine, that’s enough to help start a ripple effect for others to do the same.

What are you proud to have been involved with at University of Oregon?

I’m proud of many of my involvements at the University of Oregon. Being a Fan Experience Intern in the Oregon Athletic Department has been so enlightening to help discover my passion working in collegiate sports.

Being able to interact with so many amazing Ducks fans and give them memorable experiences is something that I will hold in my heart forever.

My professional co-ed business fraternity, Alpha Kappa Psi, and the Business Honors program have also provided such an amazing community and inspired me to always do my best no matter the circumstances.

Together, I will always carry memories from these experiences even after my time at Oregon.

Who has been your biggest supporter over the past year and why?

I’ve had so many amazing mentors who have supported me, even during the craziness of the last year. In the Athletic Department, John Brewer, Megan Robertson, and Alexis Malhado have been instrumental in providing me guidance and advice over the last year, and helping me focus my passion for working in intercollegiate athletics. Eric Boggs of the Business Honors program has always had my back, helping push even some of my weirdest ideas into the light to help make them better and teach me what it means to be a leader. Lastly my family, who are my number one cheerleaders and pit crew, for loving and supporting me unconditionally. With them by my side, I feel I can do anything.

Which fictional character is most like yourself?

Ted Lasso from Apple TV’s series ‘Ted Lasso’ is a character that sticks in my mind the most. His radiant positivity helps inspire those around him and the wise remarks he has for every situation speaks to who I want to be now and in the future. Ted Lasso looks to unite those around him for a common goal which I try to emulate in leadership positions. Like me, Ted looks to serve others and his community however he can and makes new friends and memories along the way. Just like life, it is not about winning and losing, it’s about being the best possible version of ourselves.

What are your goals after college?

After college, I’ve accepted a graduate assistantship position with the Northern Arizona University Athletic Department working in the Marketing and Fan Experience department and assisting with gameday operations. At the same time, I will be pursuing my MBA degree at NAU and hope to continue working in collegiate athletic marketing after I complete the master’s degree. I also want to help advocate for reform to the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) business model to help make college sports more equitable and accessible for student-athletes and fans. In my career, I hope to become a collegiate sports Athletic Director at a power five program and help lead a team of outstanding individuals to success.

What is the most interesting thing about you?

I’m so thankful to be a 4th generation Duck and be a part of my family’s rich history at the University of Oregon. Like my mom, sister, grandpa, great grandmother, and many other family members, my Van Horne Frohnmayer lineage has helped contribute to the success of the University and I don’t anticipate that stopping anytime soon. I’m proud of what my family has accomplished from arriving via wagon train to Eugene during the Oregon trail – to being innovators and spirited Ducks at the University of Oregon. Always in my life, I will be proud to be a Duck and I’m excited to join a tapestry of University of Oregon alumni from my family.

What motivates you in the face of adversity?

Even when adversity strikes, the best thing that motivates me is turning to my peers and mentors around me. While I may have difficulty solving a problem, by allowing others to give advice or feedback, I can see the problem from a new perspective and alleviate the roadblock. Working with others motivates me to push through because I know I have a responsibility to my team to do whatever I can for our collective goals and to see our project through no matter the circumstances.

Was there a time when you made a big mistake and then learned a lesson from it?

One of the biggest mistakes I have made during college is taking on too many activities and responsibilities. I like being an overachiever and contributing to a team however I can, but I sometimes have a hard time drawing a line between being busy and being overwhelmed. One of the lessons I have taken away from this is how to say ‘no’. It is okay to try and tackle the tasks you have and then open yourself up for new opportunities, and nobody will hold it against you for declining a task.

Quality is better than quantity, and while it took me a long time to realize it, I’m thankful to have contributed meaningfully to the responsibilities I have taken on over the last four years.

How do you hope to change the world?

I hope to change the world by being an advocate.

In every situation I face, I want to use my platform as a way to advocate for others that do not have the capacity to access systems for themselves. What are you proud to have been involved with at University of Oregon?

I am proud to be a student leader as a Resident Assistant and as a support person for ASUO student organizations. These positions have allowed me to help others and have taught me how to become a better leader.

Who has been your biggest supporter over the past year and why?

My mom has been my biggest supporter over the past year. Living and working through the pandemic has been stressful and made it difficult to find the motivation to continue working on what I am passionate about. My mom has spent the time listening to the way I feel while continuing to push me to be a better person. I am so appreciative of her support through this time.

I’d say I relate most to Leslie Knope. I aspire to be a planner and advocate, and to be passionate about even the smallest of projects because they all make a difference for the community.

What are your goals after college?

After college, I plan on attending law school. I want to build a career advocating for the environment so that it can be enjoyed by mine and future generations.

What is the most interesting thing about you?

I like to climb mountains! My yearly hiking goal is nearly half way finished with 250/500 miles completed!

I aspire to create a world where I can leave it a bit kinder than I’ve found it. My medium for creating those changes is public policy and advocacy work.

What are you proud to have been involved with at University of Oregon?

I am proud that I started the grocery drive for international students in collaboration with the Women’s Center, it was a program led and facilitated by me and it will continue in the future.

The program has the ability to serve one of the most vulnerable populations on campus.

Who has been your biggest supporter over the past year and why?

I couldn’t have completed this journey without my incredible mentors: Aniko Drlik-Muehleck, Anne Rose Kitagawa, Julie Voelker-Morris & John Arroyo. Without their emotional, professional and academic support I wouldn’t have been able to fund my graduate degree, learn advocacy skills and be a community support.

How do you hope to change the world?

I hope that through acts of service and helping others I can help make a difference in the world. I believe that even small acts of kindness and service make a large impact on others.

What are you proud to have been involved with at University of Oregon?

I am proud to have been involved with Greek Life, the University of Oregon Student Alumni Association Leadership Team, TRiOSSS, and other clubs on campus. Tri Delta has made a massive impact on my life and I cannot imagine my college experience without it. Through my sorority I have been able to serve in two leadership roles: Treasurer and Alumni Relations. I’ve also been a part of the SAA Leadership Team since my sophomore year and this organization has been a great way for me to network, meet other hardworking students and faculty, and grow as an individual. These opportunities are all something I am so proud to be involved with, and they have made lifelong impacts on me.

Who has been your biggest supporter over the past year and why?

My biggest supporters over the past year have been my parents. I am a first-generation college student, and to be graduating next month with a degree I earned in 4 years is a huge accomplishment for myself and my parents. I am so fortunate to have such supporting and loving parents that have always pushed me to be the best version of myself.

Which fictional character is most like yourself?

I would say I am most like Nancy Drew because she is an independent, determined young woman who thrives when finding out information and piecing things together. I think we are similar because we both enjoy mystery and being investigative.

What are your goals after college?

I am currently in my job search! I am exploring my options within the fields of advertising/marketing, HR, and sales. After college I’m looking forward to moving to a new town and starting a new journey there!

What is the most interesting thing about you?

If I could eat one meal for the rest of my life it’d be street tacos!

What motivates you in the face of adversity?

I feel as though when I’m struggling I really reflect on my family at home and think about how I strive to be the best because of them. I’ve faced adversity with my classes and workload; I often reflect on how I am a firstgeneration student, and remind myself that my family is proud of me no matter what. But I do feel as though the struggles I’ve faced here at UO have made me a better individual and prepared me for life after college.

How do you hope to change the world?

I plan on pursuing my masters in clinical social work after graduating from the University of Oregon. With this degree I will have the opportunity to help a wide range of communities in a variety of ways. As a Clark Honors College student, I have been working on my thesis, which is focused on increasing participant engagement with eating disorder treatment programs. This is something that I am very passionate about, and I hope to continue working in eating disorder treatment in the future.

What are you proud to have been involved with at University of Oregon?

I am proud to be a student employee at the University of Oregon Alumni Association. I’ve been working at the UOAA since I was a freshman, and the experience has taught me so much. I’ve grown in so many ways as both a professional and an individual, as well as developed fantastic professional relationships.

Who has been your biggest supporter over the past year and why?

My supervisor at the UOAA, Amber Poston, has been one of my biggest supporters over the past year. She has given me so many opportunities to experience new things professionally and get out of my comfort zone, and because of this I feel as though I’ve learned so much. I know that I can always turn to her for help with anything, whether it be work related or related to my personal life.

Which fictional character is most like yourself?

I find that I relate to Hermione Granger from Harry Potter in that she values education and loves learning while being fiercely loyal to her friends. I appreciate her hard working attitude and the fact that she is able to overcome anything that comes her way.

What are your goals after college?

After college I plan on pursuing my masters degree in social work. While I am not 100% certain what I want to do with this degree, I do know that I want to continue working with adolescents who suffer from eating disorders. Throughout working on my thesis on this topic I have become very passionate about creating the most effective treatments as well as increasing engagement and participation with these treatments.

What is the most interesting thing about you?

I ran track and cross country in high school and have raced at Hayward twice!

What motivates you in the face of adversity?

I am motivated by the opportunities to learn and grow as I overcome adversity. Although adversity can make it difficult to stay focused on the end goal and tempting to quit, I find that there are always lessons that can be learned when overcoming hurdles.

Was there a time when you made a big mistake and then learned a lesson from it?

While a specific example isn’t coming to mind, I definitely make mistakes all of the time. I try to view mistakes as a learning opportunity rather than something that is solely negative. After all, life would be pretty boring if we were perfect all of the time.

How do you hope to change the world?

Taking on everything with optimism and a smile on my face is how I hope to change the world. I’ve learned over the last year that it is the little things in life that make a world of a difference in someone’s day. You never know what people are going through, and just a smile (or smiling with your eyes in a mask) can turn someone’s day around.

What are you proud to have been involved with at University of Oregon?

I’m extremely proud to be involved with the most special school newspaper and advertising organization in the SOJC. The Daily Emerald has given me more opportunities than I could ever be taught, and for that I’m forever grateful.

Allen Hall Advertising has also given me extremely valuable lessons when it comes to leadership and perseverance.

Who has been your biggest supporter over the past year and why?

My boss at the Emerald Media Group, Shelly, has been my biggest supporter over the last year. Not only is she an incredible role model, we met in January right before the pandemic and has been by my side ever since. She is the first person I see every morning of the week and it always makes my day coming into the office to work with her. I couldn’t be more blessed to have a boss and friend like her!

Which fictional character is most like yourself?

I like to say I’m similar to the main sea turtle, Crush, from Finding Nemo. It’s how I describe my leadership: very laid back and casual, but extremely helpful and always willing to do what I can to assist a teammate. I’m a very go-withthe-flow person and, like Crush, I find myself talking to just about everyone I come in contact with.

What are your goals after college?

My plan after graduation recently took a turn after I accepted an offer at Wieden+Kennedy in New York City for their Residency program. I’ll be heading home to Portland to work remotely for the Summer before heading out to the Big Apple by September. On the side, I’ll continue instructing spin classes at Starcycle locations and hopefully getting in the habit of waking up at 5:30am for East Coast time work.

What is the most interesting thing about you?

I’d say the most interesting thing about me is that I will always give my 100% in every single thing I do, even if it’s 10 different things at once. When I commit to something, I stay committed to the end and will never put less than my all into it. I like to say I’m a very, very fiery passionate person.

What motivates you in the face of adversity?

What motivates me in the face of adversity is being a woman in a lead role across multiple different industries. Aside from my work at the Emerald and Allen Hall Advertising, I also instruct spin classes at Starcycle, a local boutique fitness studio in Eugene. It’s empowering to know that people look up to me for motivation through their own adversity.

Knowing that I’m someone that people depend on, it helps me push through my own adversity.

Was there a time when you made a big mistake and then learned a lesson from it?

I’ve made many mistakes in my life. We’re all human, and things happen sometimes. One main lesson I learn from my mistakes is that you can’t change the past. Reflect on your mistake, take accountability, and work to do better moving forward.

How do you hope to change the world?

As an educator, I empathize strongly with making the educational and social system work for all. I am dedicating myself to creating positive change with the goal of a more equitable, educated, and healthy tomorrow.

What are you proud to have been involved with at University of Oregon?

I have participated in the Undergraduate Research Symposium 2019. I did a presentation about the current ableism system in China.

Additionally, I have been working with the UO COVID-19 MAP team for the past 9 months. We are providing free COVID-19 testing to keep our community safe.

Who has been your biggest supporter over the past year and why?

My friends are my biggest supporters. I have been through ups and downs in the last year and they will always be there for me. They are helping me analyze the problems, comb out the pros and cons, seek the solutions with me, and make time for me to edit my personal statements for graduate school.

Which fictional character is most like yourself?

I am most like Mulan or Anna from Frozen. Unlike most fictional characters, they don’t have super powers, they are just ordinary girls taking the challenge by their own strength. They never surrender by repeated defeats. If they’ve made up their mind, they never give up.

Their resilience, bravery, and humanity definitely resonates with me a lot.

What are your goals after college?

Four years of study abroad have opened my eyes to the world, and made me want to learn from others; my worldview has greatly transformed. I have had an epiphany about my future career vision as a diplomat. To me, a diplomat is an educator, bringing countries together. I would like to deploy my multi-language skills to build bridges to different counties. I think in any good relationship it is important for both sides to make an effort to understand the other. I want to help foster understanding between countries, and help create incredible relationships. I believe the broad educational experience I have received in UO helped me hone in on my talents of seeing community connection into an international pathway to democracy.

What is the most interesting thing about you?

One interesting note about me is that I drink hot water only, all year round, in all types of weather. Drinking hot water is what I grew up with. It is a part of my heritage and history, it reflects thousands of years of the wisdom from traditional Chinese medicine — Yin and Yang.

What motivates you in the face of adversity?

Encouragement from my family and my friends motivates me most when I am facing adversity. When I feel frustrated about job hunting, my friends always encourage me, saying that patience is a virtue.

When I am working on a challenging project and start to lose sight of my end goal, my family always reminds me about the story of the turtle and the rabbit. The moral is that the person with the most patience will take no shortcuts and eventually win the race.

Was there a time when you made a big mistake and then learned a lesson from it?

One big mistake I made is that I was so concentrated on writing my personal statements that I did not leave myself enough time to ask for recommendation letters. Although the problem has been solved, it became a huge issue in the end. By sharing this, I hope it could help the ones who are currently planning to apply to graduate school. Plan ahead. I know personal statements are the most important for applications, however, recommendation letters are as well. Wisely, prepare personal statements while starting to ask your professors for recommendation letters. The pandemic could add more uncertainty to professors’ schedules. In the future, I will definitely find out the availability of the professors first. If they don’t have time or don’t feel comfortable to write a letter, then there will still will be enough time to find others.

How do you hope to change the world?

I hope to change the world through the individual students that I will work with as an educator. I want to work to abolish the oppressive systems within education in order to provide an equitable experience within my classroom, while also evaluating my own inherent bias and reflecting on my practices.

What are you proud to have been involved with at University of Oregon?

On campus, I am proud to have been a part of the Fraternity and Sorority Life community. Specifically when it comes to the student leaders of the individual organizations I have gotten to know and work with, who motivated me and many others to push ourselves to grow and be better. Off campus, I am proud to have worked with the Eugene Family YMCA, which has continued to provide exceptional community support in the midst of the pandemic; between emergency child care, food services, and more.

Who has been your biggest supporter over the past year and why?

My largest supporter of all time is my mom. She is the best person in the world, and has always been there for me. She is the reason that I was able to pursue my dream of attending the University of Oregon.

I hope that I am most like Leslie Knope from Parks and Recreation, because I strive to have her enthusiasm and strong work ethic. She always goes above and beyond - something I hope to do in all of my endeavors.

What are your goals after college?

After graduation, I will be attending the University of Portland for my Masters in Teaching, and then I plan on being a teacher! I also have goals of pursuing other degrees in Educational Leadership or Policy, and I would like to get my PhD someday. I’d love to eventually pursue work in educational advocacy or as a school administrator.

What is the most interesting thing about you?

I think the most interesting thing about me is that I am from Wisconsin, and I love the outdoors!

What motivates you in the face of adversity?

In the face of adversity, remembering my goals helps keep me motivated. Tackling things by breaking them up into smaller tasks can also help me get motivated and handle things that may seem too big at the time!

Was there a time when you made a big mistake and then learned a lesson from it?

There are absolutely times that I have made some big mistakes. My biggest lessons afterwards are usually involving the importance of communication, and giving myself the same grace and understanding that I would give to others.

How do you hope to change the world?

I hope to change the world by actively rejecting the elitist, productivity-obsessed culture we’ve built by recognizing people for who they are and not just what they do. I want to become a professor who creates connections with students who are quieter and perhaps wouldn’t have a chance for their voice to be heard because they have barriers they must silently overcome. The world can be marginally better if I can stand up for the introverts in the back and create communities that embrace how dynamic and intelligent a person can be, rather than how much they can do.

What are you proud to have been involved with at University of Oregon?

I am proud to serve my community as a Resident Assistant for the dorms because I got to engage with so many people and learn from such diverse backgrounds. I’ve also delved headfirst into research in my organic chemistry lab; it was a real challenge not just in the subject, but in confidence and self-worth. I’m proud of how much I’ve learned and grown as a scientist.

Who has been your biggest supporter over the past year and why?

My biggest supporter has been my mom. She quietly encourages me, but most importantly instills self-reliance.

What are your goals after college?

My immediate goal is to enter graduate school for chemistry, where I can dedicate my interdisciplinary approach in my organic chemistry research to study creative, novel ways to tackle large scale environmental problems. I am also passionate about cultivating an inclusive space in the laboratory for underrepresented identities, especially women and people of color. In grad school, I want to bridge conversations about diversity with scientific discovery in graduate school which is often left out in higher education.

“I can read and paint for days on end without interacting with humanity and be perfectly happy.

What motivates you in the face of adversity?

I think it is okay to say nothing motivates me in the face of adversity except for a biological urge to stay alive. There is no “noble way” to overcome adversity.

How do you hope to change the world?

I hope to one day be able to change the world through leveraging the power of business to promote sustainability and social equity across the globe. I believe there’s infinite potential for the business world to lead the charge in making the world a better place, and I want to be on the forefront of that.

What are you proud to have been involved with at University of Oregon?

I am proud to have been involved with the Warsaw Sports Business Club, which has helped shape me into the person I am today. The club has taught me so much, and allowed me to access opportunities I could have only dreamed of, such as interacting with companies like Nike, Adidas, NBC, the USOC, and more.

Who has been your biggest supporter over the past year and why?

The two people who have been my biggest supporters are my incredible girlfriend Mikaela, and my amazing mom, Amy. Both have given me constant support and encouragement over the past year and encouraged me to follow my passions. I am so thankful to both of them for guiding me through such a challenging year.

Which fictional character is most like yourself?

If I had to identify a fictional character most like myself, I’d choose Jerry Maguire. While I’m in no way cut out to be a high-flying sports agent, I’d like to think I have the same kind of passion and loyalty that he shows for those around him. Additionally, I’m not afraid to identify issues and tackle them head on as he does in the movie, saying things that may be uncomfortable but need to be said.

What are your goals after college?

My goals after college include working with an organization to heighten their positive impact on the world, whether through sustainable business practices or other initiatives.

I hope to make an impact immediately, using the power of business to help make the world a better place.

What is the most interesting thing about you?

The most interesting thing about me would be that I’ve worked internationally in Singapore and London, and I hope to be able to live abroad in the future.

What motivates you in the face of adversity?

In the face of adversity, what motivates me most is the challenge itself. I enjoy identifying obstacles and tackling them head on, whether it’s succeeding in a difficult class or pulling off a club event at the last minute.

Was there a time when you made a big mistake and then learned a lesson from it?

A time I made a mistake was during my junior year, in which I was tasked with delivering a final project to a client outside the university for a role with the Athletic Department. When being given instructions for the task, I didn’t ask enough questions and assumed I could wade through the ambiguity myself, but in the end I had a very different vision for the task than my supervisor had. Luckily I was able to correct my error without any harm (after a couple all-nighters), but this experience taught me the value of asking questions and fully understanding an issue before taking it on.

How do you hope to change the world?

I hope to change the world by building opportunities for other firstgeneration students in the industry that I decide to pursue. Giving back to your community is so important and making sure that you are fostering an environment where those around you can grow too will only make your community and the world as a whole, better.

What are you proud to have been involved with at University of Oregon?

I have had the honor to be involved in various organizations as a student. I am most proud to have had a hand in organizing the 2019 Youth Movement Field day. It is an event for Native American Youth in Oregon where they can come and participate in activities on campus which serves as a bridge to introduce them to higher education. In addition, I have had the joy of being a part of and leading the Music and Concerts Team that has worked hard, even over the pandemic, to bring live music to students virtually and in-person in a safe manner. There is so much that I am proud of but these are just a few examples!

Who has been your biggest supporter over the past year and why?

This is hard, I have had so many people rooting for my success but I would have to say that my mother, Maria would have to be my biggest supporter. She has truly cheered me on every step of the way. When I was at my lowest and overwhelmed she always strung the right words together to keep me going. I couldn’t have done as much as I have without her to guide me back in the right direction.

She is so strong, brilliant and everything I do is a tribute to the sacrifices she has made for me.

Which fictional character is most like yourself?

I grew really fond of the show ELITE, it’s full of mystery and drama.

There is one character named Nadia that I really resonate with.

Family is important to her and she works really hard to honor them throughout the series. She is a very level headed person who, despite any cruelty from peers, always chooses to respond with kindness and empathy. I see myself in her a lot because she works really hard and despite her circumstances, paves a path for herself to be able to have as many opportunities as possible. She chooses herself and those who love and support her and so her passions really align with mine.

What are your goals after college?

I am very open to finding new opportunities that further unveil my passions. For now I am hoping to enter the entertainment industry in the Marketing or event coordination sector. Music is something that I love with a passion and live events are something I hope to have a hand in through my career so I am applying to jobs for that right now. I hope to land an amazing job that values honesty, positivity, and excitement; somewhere that I can grow as a professional and also as an individual.

What is the most interesting thing about you?

I believe that the most interesting thing about me is the way that I am always willing to interact and meet new people at any moment.

I truly enjoy learning about people’s values, passions, and beliefs. I value human connection so much and I think that is really evident in the conversations I have. I am lucky to have built the confidence to extend beyond my comfort zone and not let the fear of people thinking I’m strange or over-enthusiastic limit my ability to possibly meet amazing people.

How do you hope to change the world?

When I began college, I knew that I wanted to make a difference and do my part to make the world a better place, but I had no idea where to start. My time here has shown me countless ways to get involved and change the world (especially locally!), and I hope to continue that by helping others learn to do the same.

What are you proud to have been involved with at University of Oregon?

I am immensely proud of my work with OSPIRG Students, which taught me how to transform my passion into action and has empowered me to make real change in my community and help other students do the same. During my time with OSPIRG at UO, I’ve been able to play an active role on important environmental and college affordability campaigns and efforts to get out the vote on campus, informing and inspiring students about the real power that we have to make change. I’ve even gotten the chance to lobby my representatives on Capitol Hill for these same issues! Most importantly, I’ve been able to inspire myself and other students to fight for our futures.

Who has been your biggest supporter over the past year and why?

My biggest supporters have been my amazing friends who have helped get me through quarantine with new hobbies and a new appreciation for the outdoors, as well as encouraging me to continue succeeding in my classes and making the most of extracurriculars while at home have been incredible supporters. My friends and family have been invaluable to my success this year.

I have always loved Parks and Rec and have related to Leslie Knope. Her optimism and dedication serve as an inspiration for work in public service!

What are your goals after college?

I plan to spend the next year after I graduate continuing my work with OSPIRG and helping students have the same empowering college experience that I did! After that I look forward to continuing a career in public service and activism.

What is the most interesting thing about you?

My passions for both politics and urban transportation perfectly culminated in my electric scooter ride on Capitol Hill last year! That has been one of my favorite memories from college.

What motivates you in the face of adversity?

As a first-generation college student who is the daughter of immigrants, there is a lot depending on me. I keep going for my family, especially for my sister. I want to set a high standard for her and be an amazing example of leadership, ambition, and positivity for her. She motivates me to keep going and to continue striving to be a better person even when times get tough. I hope one day she can see how I have kept going and use that as her reason to push through too.

Was there a time when you made a big mistake and then learned a lesson from it?

I have made so many mistakes in just the last year, but it’s a sign that I am trying which is the most important component of it all. One example of a pretty significant fumble was during our livestream shows during fall term. I did not double check a tech need and when it came time to test equipment we realized that we were missing an extremely important cable to be able to use our software. I felt so bad about it, but that experience helped me make sure our next shows went more smoothly and to double check everything. We still had hiccups moving forward but overtime we got better and better as a team.

I was going to move to Bend when I was little, instead I lived in Portland.

Living in Bend would have made my life very different.

Which fictional character is most like yourself?

I have always seen myself as Dory from Finding Nemo. She is adventurous, a little all over the place, forgetful and always accepting of new people she meets. I see a lot of those attributes in myself.

What are your goals after college?

I want to create art that has meaning and that helps people deal with or process anything they’re going through. I want my art to spark socioeconomic change through the shift of perspective it creates for the viewer.

What is the most interesting thing about you?

I make and sell homemade wire art jewelry. 60% of the proceeds go towards the Black Lives Matter Movement, to organizations that provide community support, to houseless and bail funds, as well as to funeral and family funds for victims of police brutality.

What motivates you in the face of adversity?

Knowing that it takes adversity to grow, and respecting how everyone has their own views and ideas that don’t always match up with my own.

I know that it’s up to me to learn and grow from it.

How do you hope to change the world?

I hope to help identify and solve some of the largest issues of our time: those of climate and systemic injustice. Though these are large issues, I firmly believe that any effort would have a significant impact, especially as I plan to devote my life to this.

What are you proud to have been involved with at University of Oregon?

I have found an amazing community of people at the University of Oregon who share many of the same ideals as myself. The unique geography and history of the school allows me to take first hand interest in many environmental factors such as volcanoes, earthquakes, mountain ranges, and even environmental law.

What are you proud to have been involved with at University of Oregon?

I am proud to be a participant of many events here at the UO. I try to join in every event that I hear about, and I am always so grateful to see others participating as well.

Who has been your biggest supporter over the past year and why?

My biggest supporter has been my boyfriend, John. He started off as my best friend at the beginning of the school year, so we have been very close from the start. He never gives up on me and always helps me see the positive of every situation.

Who has been your biggest supporter over the past year and why?

My biggest supporter has been my mom, who sends me love and well-wishes in times when I have struggled.

Which fictional character is most like yourself?

I am very similar to Katsuki Bakugou from My Hero Academia. He is driven and always striving for perfection, even if it sometimes hurts others. He has trouble knowing what the best course of action is, but he is always ready to act.

Which fictional character is most like yourself?

I think I most relate to Merida from Brave. We both have a bold personality, lots of curly red hair, and we believe in following our passions, not expectations of others.

What are your goals after college?

After college, I hope to work a boring desk job. In my spare time I will try to write comic books and graphic novels.

If that takes off, I will become a full-time artist. If it doesn’t, I will still be glad to be drawing everyday just for myself.

What are your goals after college?

I would like to get a job in environmental science, hopefully as a researcher. I would also love to work in the field of agriculture to help support organic and sustainable farming.

What is the most interesting thing about you?

I think the most interesting aspect of myself is how quick of a learner I am. I can usually figure out how to do things if I can see the final product, or even better, if I can watch someone else do it.

This is how I taught myself to do art, and how I learned to do most things. I also learned to bake, fix most things, sew, and a whole lot more.

What is the most interesting thing about you?

I am a very friendly person and will make conversation with almost anyone, but my fun fact is always that I have an identical twin.

What motivates you in the face of adversity?

The idea of completing my goals for my own personal pride and approval has motivated me above all. I want to see myself succeed and I will put effort into doing so, especially when the times get tough.

Was there a time when you made a big mistake and then learned a lesson from it?

In the past I have taken on too many activities at once such as working almost full time, a full class load, and several sports. I ended up struggling to keep up with my schedule. I learned the importance of time management, delegation, and devoting my time to create quality things, not quantity.

I hope I can bring more happiness and understanding into the world through my art work.

What motivates you in the face of adversity?

I am motivated most by my friends. They push me to do better each day. I never want to give up when I am struggling because I want them to feel proud that I am their friend.

Was there a time when you made a big mistake and then learned a lesson from it?

I try to think of mistakes as lessons. They shouldn’t be viewed as a bad thing, they are chances to grow. One time I put my trust into an untrustworthy person.

This resulted in my friends getting hurt.

I felt bad that I had not considered the way others could have been hurt by the people I chose to associate with. I learned to consider people and their intentions more thoroughly before I decided to trust them.

THE HAYWARD MAGIC SHOE COMES ALIVE! STORY BEGINS Hayward had a fascination with shoes that began long before he arrived in Eugene. Before one of his professional races, Hayward came out for his warmups wearing striped socks over his shoes. As soon as the gun went off, Hayward ripped off the socks, revealing a new pair of shoes with spikes on the soles — one of the first known pairs of spiked shoes to ever be used in a track meet. He won by a landslide.
