Free On Campus The new school year has arrived. On top of attending classes, participating in extracurriculars, and socializing with friends you must take care of your health and wellbeing. Self-care might look like eating a healthy meal or talking to a therapist. University of Oregon offers plenty of resources and services for students to take advantage of. New students may not know what resources are available for Ducks, and returning students may need a refresher on what the UO offers. The best part is that all the resources mentioned below are all free.
Health It is no secret that school can be stressful, especially for first year students. It can be mentally taxing to be on your own in a brand new environment away from friends and family. UO has resources for those experiencing any type of mental health related problems. The Duck Nest, located in the EMU, provides resources for students’ mental, physical and sexual health. The Duck Nest offers a safe place to relax and recharge. It holds many activities and workshops throughout the year.

Food Food is fuel. In order to stay healthy and energized during the school year, you need to eat. The problem is that many students are on a budget and sometimes grocery shopping can be hard. UO has many free on-campus resources for students. One of them is the Student Food Pantry. The pantry provides free food to college students in the greater Eugene area every Wednesday and Thursday at the Grace Lutheran Church. Stop by for all the necessities like canned foods, bread, pasta, frozen foods and fresh produce. There are also other food resources for UO students like the Trillium Produce Plus Produce Drops and Ducks Feeding Ducks. Check out basicneeds.uoregon.edu for more information.
Tutoring To finish off the list, here are some free academic resources. If office hours aren’t working for you or you need additional help, the Tutoring and Academic Engagement Center provides free tutoring for math, sciences, writing and language. There are also other free campus resources for specific subjects. Writing Central and Creative Central provides drop-in and appointment coaching for journalism and communication students. The Yamada Language Center is a good stop for anyone taking a language course. Braddock Tutoring is a free resource for business and pre-business majors. Don’t forget about academic advising because that’s always free.
The University of Oregon is a large campus. These are just a few examples of the multitudes of free on campus services and resources. Even if the resources mentioned above aren’t what you need, don’t worry because there are so many others out there. If you need help, there are always people that you can talk to. Don’t be afraid to reach out. You have professors, TAs, other classmates, advisors, et cetera.

The Best Study Spots Around UO
Navigating a large campus like the University of Oregon can be hard when there are so many dazzling places to hang out. Sifting through the chaos to find a peaceful place to do schoolwork can seem impossible. Luckily, I’ve compiled a list to make the search for the best study spots more manageable, the newest of Ducks.
Written by, Samantha Sobel Photos by, John Ofstedal Designed by, Griffin Forti
Lillis Business Complex & Peet’s Coffee-
Immediately upon entering Lillis, you’ll notice plenty of tables and chairs throughout the foyer. Walking up the stairs, you’ll find more secluded tables lining the railing and cushioned seats looking out the windows. Before settling anywhere, I encourage you to walk into Peet’s Coffee and check out the lounge area. Peet’s is a convenient place to get in a quick read and pick me up before your classes start. Make sure you’re up early because it’s popular.
Allen Hall-
Filled with seating on every floor, Allen Hall is always a safe bet for a good study spot. Everywhere you look there are places to work. On the first floor there is a bar beneath the stairway with taller seating, and a couch accompanied by a charging station to the right of the main entrance. On the second and third floors you can find bigger tables if you need more space.
Erb Memorial Union (EMU)-
The most popular and crowded study spot still contains some of the best gems on campus. No matter where you go in the EMU there is somewhere to sit and prepare for your classes. Bartolotti’s Pizza and Bistro, located on the very back of the first floor is a lowkey place to get work done, while getting an affordable bite to eat. On the second floor, you can find a larger, more secluded room featuring a piano, surrounded by a bunch of seats. If you like being serenaded while you study, this is the perfect spot for you. There’s even a terrace on the same floor, overlooking the EMU courtyard with two tables that make the best spots on a rainy day.
Tykeson Hall-
If you’re looking for a less crowded place to study, Tykeson Hall has a range of seating options to choose from. With big couches, long tables, booths, an academic advising center, and Amy’s Coffee, it’s the ideal place for studying. You can find side rooms on each floor that have screens outside indicating if they’re open for use, no reservation necessary.
The Knight Library-
The best study spot for those of us that need to hear the drop of a pin to focus. Being the main library at the UO, it’s set up to provide the space and resources every student needs to succeed. When you first walk into the library, there’s a tucked away room called the Innovate, Design, Educate, Aspire (IDEA) Space. It is filled with couches, a huge overhead lamp, scattered seating, and whiteboards all over the walls. On the first floor you can find an abundance of tables near the entrance, with the research help desk looking out from the back of the main room. If you need to pour yourself into your studies without distraction, there are private rooms on floors two through four. Scan the QR code outside the door to reserve the room for an allotted time and it’s all yours!
Espresso RomaA local favorite, right off campus on E 12th Street. Known for their affordable, cozy beverages and yummy pastries that keep the UO community bursting through their doors on the daily. With ample seating and artful ambiance, Espresso Roma has been a popular UO study spot for years, making it the perfect place to hangout after your classes. If you’re avid on studying outdoors and the rain becomes an obstacle, they even have shaded tables in the back, to protect your papers.
Old Campus Quad (across from Johnson Hall) -
Hidden behind the University building, a towering maple tree looks down upon a bench facing the greenspace by Allen Hall. Secluded from most classes, this spot provides a serene break from the havoc normally found around campus. Heading further down the trails, you’ll find more benches scattered in precariously concealed places that share the same cozy vibe. There is so much space on the grass, it makes the best place to catch up on some reading.
Study Suggestion: Avoid staying in your dorm while you do your schoolwork to get out of your comfort zone and minimize distractions. Find places on campus that make studying something you look forward to, rather than dread. The perfect environment completely transforms a boring study session into a rewarding practice that could make a big difference in your next class.

Game Day essentials
Written by Georgia Tucker De signed and Illustrated by Lindsay Rogers
If you’re feeling really enthusiastic, you might even want to try and get one that is green and yellow! These can also be purchased at the duck store or online. The fourth game day essential that I highly recommend is a clear water bottle! These can be filled up once you enter the stadium. Football games can last a long time, it’s good to make sure that you stay hydrated while you are enjoying the game. If the water bottle is not clear, they will not let it enter the stadium. So you want to make sure it is clear in order to save time.
As we start a brand new year, it’s time to get back into game day mode. Nothing compares to the energy and love that our duck fans bring to Autzen Stadium. Game days are some of the most exciting days of fall term, So let’s come together to cheer on our ducks!! But before we get to all those exciting games, we must talk about the game day essentials that you might want to bring. These essentials will make your life a whole lot easier, so you can spend more time focusing on the game. The first game day essential that you should bring is your student ID. It is very important that you bring your student ID with you in order to enter the stadium. When you get to the student gate outside of the stadium, they will ask you to show them your student ID with your ticket. Keep in mind that this only applies to you if you are using a student issued ticket. Otherwise you are good to go! The second game day essential is some sort of clear bag! This can be any type of bag that is clear and portable. I recommend getting a clear fanny pack or backpack, they seem to be the easiest to manage. You don’t have to worry about holding your bag during the game and you can keep track of it easily. You can get a clear bag from almost anywhere. They sell them at Target or the duck store, as well as online. There is also a duck shop at the stadium where you can purchase one. Depending on the game, there might be someone handing them out for free when you walk in. The third game day essential is a rain poncho. Before we talk about this it is good to keep in mind that it never rains in Autzen Stadium! There is only the occasional sprinkle. Rain ponchos are usually pretty thin, making it easy to take them with you anywhere.
The fifth game day essential is duck gear! It wouldn’t be a ducks game without the crowd decked out in green and yellow. Wearing your school’s colors is a critical part of being involved in school spirit. And as you might already know, our duck fans like to go all out! Remember to check the weather before games so you can dress accordingly. Duck gear can be purchased at the duck store or online. The final thing that I recommend you bring is some form of card payment. Once you are in the stadium, they do not accept cash payments. This will come in handy when you want some snacks or even a sweet treat. During night games, I am more likely to want snacks.
I hope this list of essentials helps you get ready for your next gameday adventure! Remember to make memories and have fun, while cheering on our ducks.

Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner: A Complete Guide to On-Campus Food Written by Bailey Meyers | Designed and Illustrated by Spencer So
One of the most important questions every freshman asks their friends is, “Where should we go eat?” Between the new and improved eats Unthank Hall has to offer or the tried and true cure-all Carson breakfast buffet, finding the perfect on-campus meal is no easy feat. As a seasoned veteran of the University of Oregon’s dining halls, I have compiled a list of essential meals that will satisfy both those looking for a quick bite between classes and the adventurous foodie looking for a unique on-campus dining experience.
Breakfast: PNW Café:
Running late to class? Prefer a coffee and muffin rather than a hearty breakfast? Look no further. Located in Unthank, the PNW Café brews delicious coffee with barista-grade options and delicious handmade pastries, offering a simple yet satisfying breakfast. My go-to is always an iced vanilla latte with a mouthwateringly sweet blueberry muffin.
Duck’s House:
Located in Unthank, Duck’s House offers a traditional fanfare of breakfast items, from an elevated breakfast sandwich to the famously delicious Oregon Waffle. Choose from the Waffle Trainer- a Nike shoe-shaped waffle dripping with maple syrup and whipped butter or the Waffle Racer- a Nike shoe-shaped waffle topped with Oregon berry compote and of course, whipped cream.
Carson Breakfast Buffet:
After a long Friday night out, the perfect remedy is a Saturday morning breakfast buffet. Get your fill of traditional breakfast foods at Carson’s breakfast buffet on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Bacon, eggs, pancakes, and cereal are just a few of the delicious options Carson has to offer.
DUX Bistro:
Lunch:
Located in the Living Learning Center right at the center of campus, DUX Bistro offers salads, sandwiches, and a hot deli to fulfill your midday meal needs. From quick grab-and-go options to create-your-own salads and sandwiches, there is something for everyone at DUX Bistro.
Watershed:
Craving healthy, high-quality food, but don’t want the high price? Watershed offers smoothie bowls and salad bowls to satisfy your craving. Refreshing house-pressed juices and coconut bliss soft serve are a great way to round out any meal on a sweet note. The chicken shawarma and dragonfruit smoothie bowl are some of my favorites for a healthy, filling lunch.
Tamarind:
Dinner:
After a typical rainy day on campus, Tamarind in Unthank is the perfect way to warm up and wind down. Enjoy delicious hand-crafted curries, seasoned to perfection with over 20 different spices. It goes without mentioning that any meal at Tamarind is incomplete without a side of perfectly baked naan bread.
Fresh Marketcafé:
Offering a full deli, global bowls, and pasta bowls, Fresh Marketcafé located in Global Scholars Halls provides a plethora of options to create the perfect dinner.
From the picky eater who enjoys chicken tenders to those who enjoy elaborate pasta dishes, everyone can find something at the Fresh Marketcafé.
Duck’s House:
Thanks to its popularity and quality food options, Duck’s House has earned a second spot on this list. Dinner at Duck’s House is more than a quick grab-and-go. Choose to have a fancy night out on campus and eat at the Duck’s House restaurant where you will enjoy full table service along with top-tier appetizer and entree choices.
From quick bites to unique dining experiences, UO’s dining halls have it all. Next time the inevitable question arises, refer back to this guide to find your own favorites.
