The magazine is intended to give incoming UO students (and families) important and useful information about life at the University of Oregon. THE ULTIMATE ROOMMATE CONTRACT Attention, new roommates: the following contractual agreement is to be signed before embarking together on the experience of independent living. Quite possibly serving only to prove your incapability of functioning at the level of a competent adult, the experience could be harrowing. Your commitment to sharing a dorm/apartment/extra-large 1960s Volkswagen van will require daily upholding of roommate values, which will be easier to follow if they are laid out beforehand. Continually harboring unspoken resentments that will eventually blow up in your faces and wind up on some “roommate brawls” subreddit do not make for a suitable living environment. With this pledge for cooperative living, we concur that announcing visitors in advance, keeping doors closed during winter (we’re not trying to heat the neighborhood) and keeping out of each other’s designated food cabinets will contribute to a mutually beneficial roommate relationship.

ESCAPING THE HEAT

The last months of summer are here, and the temperature is rising every second to unbearable levels no matter how many ice cubes and fans we throw at it. It may seem like the heat is unstoppable, but there are ways to avoid it -- check out these five places to escape the heat, even when the thermometers are melting!

16

1. Going to the Movies

2. Cool Off in the Pool

3. Hit the River

There’s no better way to avoid the hottest hours of the day than in an air-conditioned, chilly movie theatre with a bucket of popcorn in your lap and an ice cold soda in your cup holder. Eugene offers three unique movie experiences; Regal Valley River Center located in the same mall, Cinemark 17 right beside the Gateway mall in Springfield, and the Bijou Theatre on East 13th avenue. Stop by Regal or Cinemark for the latest hit movies you’ve heard all about (like upcoming Close Encounters of The 3rd Kind or Bushwick) and a classic theater vibe (they even have reclining seats) for only $11 a ticket. Both offer student discounts when presented with your school ID, too! Check out the Bijou Theatre for a more authentic cinematic experience and original films straight from the producers at only $6.50.

Something about sitting next to a cool body of water with an umbrella over your head and a drink in your hand just wipes your mind of the intense heat you’re in during the summer. Taking a quick (or not so quick) dip in a pool is an unparalleled solution to the harsh temps. Check out nearby locations like Splash! in Springfield ($6.25 for a day pass), an indoor water park that offers swim lessons and multiple fitness programs, or Amazon pool ($5 day pass) for a wide range of programs, swim times, and even special seasonal discounts. A sneakier, cheaper way to make your way poolside is by living at/ knowing someone who lives at a local apartment complex! Popular locations like Chase Village, Ducks Village, and The Hub all feature refreshing, full-sized pools for their luxurious residents (and those residents friends).

For the water lovers who like to be a little more wild in their endeavors, pick up your paddles, blow up your boats, and head to the riverways. Rafting is a popular pastime in Eugene, and the rivers are often packed during the summer months with enthusiastic outdoorsman (and women). While rivers like the McKenzie and the Willamette are essentially in our back yard, don’t be afraid to check out a little beyond the city limits - the Rogue River is one of the West Coast’s most popular rafting waters (Approximately $40 per day). Look to local services like the University of Oregon’s outdoor rental program or Oregon Whitewater Adventures in Springfield. Be sure and look to guide services or have a friend who knows the area. And always wear a life jacket and whistle -- rafting is relaxing and a great excuse to go play in the water, but it can be dangerous, too!

4. Mini Golf at Putters Anything indoors with air conditioning is a welcome adventure in August, but why not throw in some pinwheels, castles and ridiculous trick shots? Putters, an 18-hole indoor mini-golf course located just outside of Eugene, offers a sweet escape from the outdoors into the world of competition and fun. For only $6.50 you can enjoy a full round of miniature golf, and if you can manage to sneak in on Tuesday, it’s only $5. If mini-golf isn’t up your alley, they also offer a full arcade, pool tables and an indoor playground for the younger groups (or those who like to pretend they’re still a young free spirit). If you’re not sold yet, head over after four in the afternoon on Thursdays and you might catch a lively round of laser tag in their multi-level laser arena. Location: 1156 OR-99, Eugene Hours: Sun. - Thurs. 11am - 10pm and Fri. - Sat. 11am - 11pm

5. Head to a Lake If the heat has got you beat and you can’t stand to take another minute in the warmth of Eugene, pack up your coolers, sunscreens and friends and make your way to a reservoir! Cougar Reservoir, Dexter Reservoir and Fern Ridge Lake are all within an hours drive of Eugene and promise a cool dip in clean, refreshing water. Head to one of their many beach sites or docks to jump in with your family and friends, or bring water sports such as kayaks and paddleboards to explore around the whole thing. Under Way LLC, just outside of Eugene, offers affordable rentals of all of the above and even sailboats and canoes. Pick your favorite, and get there before the rest of the crowd does to soak up the sun without overheating.

FRESHMAN SURVIVAL GUIDE Welcome to the University of Oregon! Now that you’re a college freshman, there’s a whole host of new experiences, situations and problems you’re bound to encounter. If you find yourself feeling a little lost in your new environment, don’t worry -- you’re not alone. There are time-tested ways to keep your grades up, make new friends and make the most of your first year in college. Here’s how to survive your freshman year at UO:

Be Open A common early mistake many freshmen make is to not open themselves up to their peers and neighbors. Whether you’re feeling shy, homesick or even too cool for your residence hall neighbors, it’s important not to shut yourself off. You’ll want to leave your door open any time you don’t need the privacy. This will create a welcoming environment, and you’ll be getting along famously with the people in your hall in no time. The mandatory residence hall meetings you’ll have to sit through may seem like a pain, but they’re a great opportunity to meet even more people. As long as you stay open to meeting new people, it will come naturally.

Join Something Your freshman year is all about new experiences. Around every corner is an opportunity to join a club or group that could become your new passion. Think about what kind of activities interest you. Does UO offer a sport you’ve always wanted to try? Join a club or intramural team. Want to learn a new artististic or practical skill? Hit up the Craft Center in the EMU. Do you feel like making a difference? Join a student group, such

DUCK LIFE 2018

as the Student Sustainability Center or the Women’s Center, that works to improve the lives of students. Inserting yourself into a campus group is a great way to meet people, too.

Make the Grade Okay, so you’ve made yourself some friends now. Great! You’re heading to clubs, events, football games and parties together, having a great time 24/7. Everything’s coming together perfectly, and you’re killing it at life -- until your first Psych 201 exam sneaks up on you. Keeping up with our schoolwork is obviously a key element of success in college, but it can be easy to get caught up in everything else that’s going on in your first term of college and fall behind in class. The new college workload is a lot heavier than a lot of us are used to in high school, so you’ll need to give yourself ample time to focus on studying. Don’t procrastinate! Instead of saving everything for Sunday night (you simply will not get everything done with this strategy), plan out time during each weekday to chip away at your mountain of reading, homework and studying. Don’t just resign yourself to work at your desk -- changing the scenery away from where you sleep will make you a lot

more productive. Campus is full of hidden spots to work on homework, so don’t feel like you have to hole up in Knight Library every day either. With a little persistence, you’ll develop a study plan that puts you on the path to success in no time.

Utilize Apps to Help You Succeed There are plenty of resources to help students with organization and homework. Getting comfortable with things like Google Drive, Google Calendar, and Evernote has become essential in an increasingly technological world. Google Calendar is great for keeping all your responsibilities in one place. It can even send you reminders so that due date never sneaks up on you. Google Drive is essential for group work. You can share documents with classmates, chat with them, and edit your work together. Plus, it’s all online so there’s never the fear of forgetting to press save. Lastly, Evernote is one of the most user friendly note taking apps there is, allowing you to keep all your notes in one place across your phone and computer. It’ll take some time to find a system that works for you, but your phone and computer are excellent tools for success in college.

SIX TIPS

for Graduating on Time THE STAFF IN THE UNIVERSITY REGISTRAR’S OFFICE ARE COMMITTED TO SUPPORTING STUDENT SUCCESS. TO HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR EDUCATIONAL GOALS, WE’RE HERE TO PROVIDE INFORMATION AND SERVICES THROUGHOUT YOUR EDUCATIONAL CAREER. AS YOU BEGIN YOUR 2018 ACADEMIC YEAR AT THE UNIVERSITY OF OREGON, WE WILL BE COMMUNICATING WITH YOU BY E-MAIL ON SEVERAL IMPORTANT ISSUES RELATED TO YOUR ACADEMIC SUCCESS.

1. Read your e-mail. We often hear that students don’t have time to read all of their e-mail. However, if you ignore e-mail correspondence from the University, you can miss out on important dates and deadlines for adding and dropping courses, financial aid and scholarship deadlines, and departmental updates. Time spent petitioning for exceptions to deadlines is lost time—you could be studying, relaxing, or doing what you want to do! The Registrar’s Office and other offices will be sending you e-mails throughout the year to keep you informed of academic dates and changes, updates to academic policy and other information you need to know.

2. Work with your advisor. Students often enroll for courses that are not necessary or required for their degree. This costs you a lot of money and time, and may delay your graduation. Don’t be afraid to ask for advising help to ensure you are taking courses that will count,

3. Take, and complete, 15 credits per term. Whether you are in a four- or five-year program, you need to complete on average 15 credits per term in order to graduate on time. Each term beyond the four or five year mark will add hundreds of dollars (or more) to your college bill and student debt. Also, each term you stay in school is lost job earnings.

4. Use the Student Schedule Builder to help optimize your schedule each term. Schedule Builder is a web-based schedule planner that presents you with all possible schedule options that are currently available for registration. With this tool, you can easily generate a class schedule that fits your individual needs without having to resort to pen and paper.

5. Review your Degree Guide frequently. The Degree Guide is a web-based program that allows you to track your major, minor, and UO degree requirements. The Registrar’s Office will update your Degree Guide every term after grades have been processed, and you can update your own guide after adding and dropping courses. Play close attention to your guide and, if you have any questions, see your advisor.

6. Always ask for help if you have questions about your degree requirements or university policies. You are responsible for making sure your degree requirements are met, but advisors and the staff in the Registrar’s Office can help answer any questions and confirm that you are on track. We are here to assist you in person (2 nd floor Oregon Hall), by phone (541-346- 2935) or via e-mail (registrar@uoregon.edu). Best wishes for a successful year ahead! 2018 DUCK LIFE |

DUCK LIFE 2018

If I have one piece of advice for future Ducks, it would be this:

LEAVE THE BUBBLE.

The “bubble” I’m referring to is the invisible dome-like structure that surrounds the University of Oregon campus and the few blocks around, sucking you in to a monotonous lifestyle of sameness: Caspian, class, Espresso Roma, Walton, class, Carson Dining, Carson lounge, sleep, repeat. Not that there’s anything inherently wrong with this, except that you’re just not really exploring the small city that’s hosting you: Eugene. You’re a student and that’s just about it. I get it: It’s convenient. You go to class, you want to walk to class, you want to do everything within a few blocks of that class. Live. Eat. Exercise. There’s a certain comfort that goes along with this safeness. But, (for fear of appearing dramatic) there’s a certain kind of sadness, too. When you go beyond that invisible barrier, you explore the Eugene that doesn’t leave once spring terms ends, that population that has families, or no families, and gardens, and dogs, and block parties, and art galleries, and artsy movie theaters, and sizzling pizza pies and tea houses. Basically, you miss out on so much. Downtown Eugene has all the best qualities of a larger city, with the welcoming atmosphere of a small town. With world-class pizzerias, artisan craft stores and more places to buy shoes than you’ll ever need, downtown Eugene is a must-visit part of the town you’ll call home for at least four years.

SIZZLE PIE Best cheap pizza in town. No doubt about it. Their slogan is “Eat Pizza Everyday” and you might just want to do that once you go here. They have several options for toppings and a great salad and slice combo deal. And because it’s open until 4 a.m. on weekends and 3 a.m. on weekdays, it’s the perfect place for a greasy-food study break. There’s also a great outdoor seating area during those months when, you know, the sun decides to shine.

NORTH + WEST COLLECTION

OFF THE WAFFLE

This store is all about American-made — from the toiletries, to the backpacks, to the handmade jewelery, to the postcards, to the trendy iPhone covers. However, quality comes at a price (let’s just say you’re not going to be making a purchase here every week). Even so, it’s a great shop to get those special, one-of-a-kind gifts — for someone else or for you.

Off-the-Waffle is page one of Downtown Eugene. If you don’t know where to start when exploring the area, start here. Whether you’re in the mood for a sweet waffle creation, a more savory breakfast, or even something in between, Off the Waffle will be the waffle of your eye. Their menu includes a variety of authentic Liège waffles, including “Goat in Headlights” and “Braise of Glory.” You’ll have to see for yourself to find out what those titles mean. (Or just check their online menu.)

CAFE PERUGINO

J. MICHAELS BOOKS

THE BARN LIGHT

If you want to do your work in a tasteful atmosphere that’s not Starbucks, head to Café Perugino. It’s a coffee shop with Italian flair: Everything on menu is Italian, from their cheeses to their panini to their superb cappuccinos (the best I’ve ever tried). This place is a fresh piece of Italy. Plus, if you want to get a taste of what Eugene residents are like, their clientele is mostly made up of working professionals.

There’s something about that old-school bookstore feel that is so wonderful; from its collection of old and new, and diversity of titles, it really warrants a day of browsing. That’s what J. Michaels Bookstore is for. It’s the perfect Sunday getaway for some decompressing before the beginning of a hectic week. It’s just the place to get that new book you’ve been hearing about — that is, if you have the time to read it.

It calls itself the “little Portland” of Eugene, and some might say it’s earned its title. Its atmosphere is dark and roomy and the food is delicious and unique, ranging from items such as your standard turkey cranberry sandwich to “Frito pies.” There’s a shuffleboard, a foosball table (they have foosball tournaments every week) and a vinyl-playing night every Sunday in which you can bring your own records.

KILLER BURGER

FOOTWISE

PASSION FLOWER

Here’s the thing about this burger joint: Every. Burger. Has. Bacon. Oh, what, you’re still reading? These are the best burgers in town, and for a reason: Killer Burger doesn’t fool around with basic, single-topping burgers. If you’re eating here, you’d better expect burgers with peanut butter and pickles, burgers with fiery Sriracha BBQ sauce and fried jalapenos, burgers with an entire breakfast piled on top -- at Killer Burger, you go big or you go home.

So you want a pair of those trendy Birkenstock sandals everyone wear around campus whenever the sun makes a rare appearance? Footwise is the perfect local shop to get fulfill your shoe needs, sandals or otherwise. Combining style and comfort effortlessly since 1983, Footwise also boasts highly knowledgeable employees who will set you up with the right fit at the right price. As their slogan goes, follow your feet to Footwise.

The next time you need flowers for any occasion, and I mean LITERALLY any occasion, your best bet is Passionflower. Their shop creates unique floral arrangements suited for any of your special event needs. To make matters even easier, you can order and send flowers through their website. On top of their floral selection, Passionflower’s eclectic collection of jewelry, clothing, home decor and more will keep you coming back for more.

SHOE-A-HOLIC

VOODOO DONUTS

As a college student, you’ll find yourself in need of a wider variety of shoes than ever. Trying a new sport for intramurals? You’ll need some quality running or athletic shoes. Joining a formal, black tie organization? No more sneakers, you need some dress shoes. Even if you just need a new pair of Vans because the duct tape on your old pair is falling apart, Shoe-a-Holic has all these shoe varieties and more.

This Portland food staple has made its way into our very own Downtown Eugene, which is great news for any donut lover who hates waiting in line to get their pastry fix. Now, you can head downtown to get yourself an iconic, hot-pink donut box piled high with Voodoo Donuts classics. The unique topping and, well, shapes of these donuts set them apart from your typical pastry shop, making these treats an experience to remember for more than your taste buds.

BLACK WOLF SUPPER CLUB

DUCK LIFE 2018

With a host of handcrafted microbrews on tap and Northwestinspired, locally-sourced menu items like the popular pan-fried Steelhead salmon and oyster Po’ Boy, you won’t want your first visit to Planktown to be your last.

This is one coffee shop you might end up spending hours in if you’re not careful. The Washburne cafe is a specialty coffee house and handmade goods merchant. They serve coffee from Slightly Coffee in Eugene, fostering a connection from their community to ours. For food, Washburne offers pastries made fresh in house daily, gluten-free options from local bakers and a rotating menu of breakfast and lunch plates.

THE PUMP

SPROUT REGIONAL FOOD HUB

Imagine you’re on a cross-country road trip. You’re on the Northwest leg of your journey, and you’re just passing through Springfield when you realize that you need some grub. Look no further than The Pump! This is a classic Americanstyle cafe that’s perfect for a quick bite for breakfast or lunch. It’s great food at the right price.

Sprout is a regional food hub where with several food options under one roof. Located inside an quaint, historic church, it’s a charming spot to grab some German comfort good, a latin meal, or baked goods made only from locally sourced ingredients. The atmosphere is unique and friendly with a beautiful courtyard and plenty of outdoor seating for sunny days and it’s only 2 blocks away from the EMX station, so it’s a quick ride from campus! 2018 DUCK LIFE |

GAME DAY ESSENTIALS The leaves are changing, school is almost back in session, and football is finally back! After a long, staggering offseason, the Ducks are back in Autzen Stadium and the fans are ready to follow suit. When you’re packing up for Saturday night football, it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement and pre-game celebrations and end up stuck without something important 500-deep in the student section. Check out these gameday essentials for tips and tricks to making every gameday a great day!

Duck Gear (in rain or shine) Hydration is a Major Key Collect your pom-poms, grab those green and yellow leggings and slap on some face stickers – it’s game day, and it’s time to represent the Ducks. There’s nothing more welcoming than walking in the gates to a sea of green and yellow, so it’s important everyone joins in. You can pick up unique, spirited duck gear of all kinds at the local Hirons or Fred Meyer for a great bargain price, or head over to the Duck Store for name-brand Duck gear! Remember: it may never rain in Autzen stadium, but juuust in case… be prepared, and carry an umbrella or a raincoat with you.

DUCK LIFE 2018

Regardless of the temperature outside, it can be a pretty tiring job standing in the student section cheering your heart out for four quarters. It’s always an option to grab a quick water from one of the many vendors inside the stadium, save a few dollars and bring your own bottle! Pack a lightweight bottle with handfuls of ice and your favorite flavor to stay refreshed and ready to go all day long. Remember to make sure they’re clear and visible, or security won’t let it through the front doors.

Sunscreen Even on the cloudiest day in the stadium, it can take a tough toll on your skin to stand outside with no

protection after a long afternoon. Rub some SPF 15 on vulnerable places like your nose, ears or the back of your neck to protect them from the hot sun. For the makeup wearers out there, look for foundations or moisturizers that have SPF built in to make it even easier!

Bring a Buddy No one wants to go alone, and the whole day will get better when you’re surrounded by your fellow Ducklings. Bring your friends, a camera to document some sweet group selfies, and arrive early to the game to get a spot in the front – maybe you’ll make it on the big screen. Be sure you bring your student ID to get into the student section together!

WHERE ADVENTURE BEGINS

PHOTOS | TREVOR MEYER

NEVER STAY BARRICADED IN YOUR ROOM. THERE’S TOO MUCH NATURAL BEAUTY, SCENIC HIKES AND NATURAL HIKES AT YOUR DISPOSAL IN EUGENE TO BE STAYING COOPED UP INDOORS. LACE UP YOUR BOOTS, LAYER ON THE SUNSCREEN AND PACK A SNACK BECAUSE YOU’VE GOT AN ADVENTURE AHEAD OF YOU. Lake Creek Falls Rock Slides:

Located a little less than an hour outside of Eugene, the Lake Creek Falls Rock Slides are basically a natural water park. A small waterfall empties into a swimming hole near the entrance, and multiple cliff jumping platforms with various ropes and platforms at about 25-35 feet are located across the creek. Follow the creek a little farther down for 60

|

DUCK LIFE 2018

the main attraction — a natural, 100-foot water slide. Made of gently sloping rock and emptying into a warm wading pool, the “water slide” can be ridden down on a variety of floaties.

Spencer Butte:

Spencer Butte is a Eugene classic. Located at the southern edge of Eugene, the butte is a city landmark — the top of it is visible from downtown. Photos of your friends at the top of the butte will be popping up all over your Instagram newsfeed come sunny weather. And for good reason — the view is beautiful, and you only have to hike about a mile to get to the top (less if you take the West Route). Invite your floormates and have a bonding experience over melty trail mix and beautiful views.

Willamette River trails:

You don’t have to go far to enjoy the beautiful forests of the Pacific Northwest. There are plenty of easy trails to explore by the Willamette River, located between the University of Oregon campus and Autzen Stadium. These trails are easy to walk or run, and are perfect for an afternoon jog if you are sick of the Rec Center. Grab a friend and explore a few, or enjoy some precious alone time away from campus walking by the water.

Terwilliger Hot Springs:

Missing your hot tub at home? The hot springs at Terwilliger Springs are a good replacement. Six soaking pools and a lagoon are located in the middle of the Willamette National Forest, about 60 minutes from Eugene. The hot springs are about a quarter mile hike from the parking lot and it costs $6 to get in. Once you get there, though, you’ll be greeted by six hot springs separated by rock walls. Let’s be real. Your hot tub can’t hold a candle to this.

Mt. Pisgah Arboretum:

Haven’t seen enough trees in the Pacific Northwest? Visit Mt. Pisgah, Eugene’s 209-acre living tree museum. A 15 minute drive or 40 minute bus ride from the university, Mt. Pisgah has multiple trails, ranging from gentle strolls for beginners to intermediate hiking for the more experienced. If you want to learn more about the forests and wildlife of Oregon — and there’s a lot to learn — the arboretum also offers nature workshops and walks year round.

Ridgeline Trail:

The Ridgeline trail system forms a circular path around the southern perimeter of the city. Through a series of large, loosely connected parklands, the trails are a favorite for the Eugene community because of the recreational possibilities it offers. With sprawling open spaces and a natural habitat, the Ridgeline system is accessible through a network of more than 12 miles of trail.

Tamolitch Blue Pool:

Oregon’s famous Blue Pool is home to a breezy yet gorgeous hike, a briskly refreshing swim and the bluest water you’ve ever seen. Seriously, the brilliant blue hue of Blue Pool’s water is incredible to see. It’s a landmark best enjoyed in the height of summer because the pool truly is freezing. If you can brave the chilly temperatures and the drive from Eugene to Sisters, Oregon, Blue Pool is more than worth your time.

The Table Rocks:

The Table Rocks are just one natural wonder of the region. These large rock formations are prominent landmarks that offer breathtaking views of the Oregon landscape. Formed by a volcanic eruption seven million years ago, the land has eroded to leave behind two natural plateaus with great hiking potential. The two rocks are known as Lower Table Rock and Upper Table Rock, and feature over 200 varieties of wildflowers and wildlife. At a three hour drive from Eugene, these rocks are a bit of a trek to get to -- but if you can make the drive there, it’ll be worth it.

Oh, The Places You’ll Go! (With your Student ID) WORDS | DELANEY REA PHOTOS | TREVOR MEYER

With your UO student ID card, there comes access to some extra perks. You might have heard about these, including free access to many UO events and free fare on Lane County’s transit system, but have you really explored the options the card gives you? You can go as far as 53 miles away from Eugene with the card. So whether you want to see more of the city or get the hell out of it, you can access all of Lane Transit District’s routes with your student ID card.

McKenzie Bridge McKenzie Bridge is a small town on the outskirts of Lane County. It sits on the McKenzie River, and a trip down to the surrounding area on one of the many upcoming bright spring days makes for a great day trip. It’s a truly beautiful area located just outside town. Bring a bike along for the ride, and you’ll be able to further expand your reach into the outdoor offerings of McKenzie Bridge. The route runs from Eugene Station (Bay G) at 5:30 p.m. on weekdays, where you can take the route all the way to McKenzie Bridge.

The Whiteaker The Whiteaker is the perfect place to visit if you miss Portland. With tons of trendy restaurants like Bari, Grit, Tacovore, and more, this neighborhood helps you get away from the campus vibe of greater Eugene. Much of the 64

|

DUCK LIFE 2018

area is residential, and a stroll through the neighborhood reveals an array of interesting mid-century modern housing that seems a world away from the cookie-cutter apartment buildings so common around campus. If the UO vibe is getting stale, check out the Whiteaker by taking the EMX to Eugene Station and hopping on bus 40.

Skinner Butte For scenic views within city limits, Skinner Butte is a great spot. Located on north edge of downtown Eugene, the hill looks out over the Willamette River. Skinner Butte is one of our city’s most famous local landmarks, and also is home to Skinner Butte Park, a municipal park. There are plenty of hiking trails surrounding Skinner Butte, both official and trail-blazed, so there’s always a new route to hike through. Skinner Butte can be reached via bus 51 from Eugene Station.

Ridgeline Trail The Ridgeline trail system forms a circular path around the southern perimeter of the city. Through a series of large, semi-connected parklands, the trails are a favorite for the Eugene community because of the recreational possibilities it offers. With sprawling open spaces and a natural habitat, the Ridgeline system is accessible through a network of more than 12 miles of trail. To get to the first of seven trailheads, take bus 73 from Eugene Station.

Valley River Center Ready for an Adventure? Plan you trip now at: ltd.org

If you’re looking to spend the money burning a hole in your pocket, Valley River Center has the shopping experience you need. Many refer to it affectionately as “VRC,” and it’s definitely the mall with the broadest options in Eugene. With clothing stores, a movie theater, hobby shops and dining options, Valley River Center is a great place to waste an afternoon. Getting there is simple – just jump on bus 66 from Eugene Station.
