PHASE TWO OF KNIGHT CAMPUS CREEPS CLOSER TO THE

URBAN FARM

Slated to be constructed just east of the Urban Farm, the next addition to Knight Campus will affect students and plant life alike.

After a second $500 million donation from Phil and Penny Knight, the University of Oregon will move forward with phase two of the construction of Knight Campus. The new building will be located just east of UO's Urban Farm, and some students and staff are concerned about how the building will affect the farm’s operations, size and access to sunlight.

“The vision for building two is a 175,000-squarefoot, multi-story bioengineering and applied science research building to support additional research programs and facilities,” Darin Dehle, the director of design and construction at UO, said.

With the donation from the Knights, UO “will further expand its strengths in bioengineering and applied scientific research and training, creating new opportunities for additional students, adding faculty positions and funding a second building,” according to UO’s website for the project.

During a meeting with UO’s architectural team and the landscape architects for the upcoming project, Urban Farm director Harper Keeler said he voiced one of the most glaring concerns about how Knight Campus will affect the Urban Farm: access to sunlight. “The new building is going up directly to our east, which will affect the morning sun,” Keeler said.

The design team compromised by making the new Knight Campus building a bit shorter than initially planned, Keeler said. Dehle said the team will reveal the final design for the building in 2022.

Access to sunlight isn’t the only way the second Knight Campus building will change the farm. Keeler said some of the trees in or around the Urban Farm may be removed during construction. “We have lots of apple trees,” he said. “We’re going to lose some soon, it looks like, based on the new construction.”

Most of the farm’s trees are fruit trees, Keeler said, which students harvest from every year. He said the Urban Farm’s two best fruit trees are located in the parking lot where the new Knight Campus will be.

“They're not going to adjust the footprint of a half a billion dollar project for a couple of fruit trees,” he said.

Every fall, the Urban Farm makes homemade apple cider with the fruit from the gardens.

“There's much more to a tree than the fruit that comes off it in terms of educational value and, more importantly, emotional value to the students,” Keeler said. “This orchard cannot go anywhere, and I think that is recognized by campus construction and UO.” Georgianna Aubin, a senior majoring in art who is currently in the Urban Farm class, said she signed up for Urban Farm for the credits. But, as time went on, the class grew on her.

“I wish I could take this every term,” Aubin said.

“The class is so informative, and I feel like I’ve learned so many things that I had no idea about. Now I have a garden back at my apartment.”

The class is tackling topics including environmental awareness, food deserts and the importance of eating local.

“I recently went to the Saturday Market, which normally, I would go to, but never really think about where my food comes from,” Aubin said. “It’s amazing to think that there are all these communities that are (Janice Kai Chen/Emerald)

trying to be environmentally responsible with their practices.”

Urban Farm classes frequently have waitlists to get in, which Keeler said demonstrates their popularity among students.

“Because of this class, random strangers get to learn and grow together to build a community for a better, healthier environment,” Aubin said. “Urban farming in general gives the community affordable, accessible, healthy nutrient-rich food that is benefiting our planet.”

Beyond the farm-specific class, the Urban Farm serves as a destination for many academic

communities and groups of the UO, such as pollination biology, soil science classes and some First-Year Interest Groups. The farm also provides a refuge for UO and Eugene communities to work on their wellness, Keeler said. He said this aspect of the farm became very evident at the start of the pandemic.

“To sit on a bench, away from other things, is really valuable,” Keeler said. “You can't overstate how important that is, just to be able to come out and see birds and bugs and nature.”

With Knight Campus and the Urban Farm being next door neighbors, there are opportunities for the farm to be a social venue. Keeler said he expects people working at Knight Campus to hold meetings at the farm “because it’s nicer than being inside.”

Expansions beyond the gates of the Urban Farm were part of Keeler's vision and goal for the program.

“I was able to get the university certified as a bee friendly campus,” he said. This certification shines a light on the Urban Farm as a pollinator habitat site.

“We’re not adversarial with the Knight Campus,” he said. “We understand all the things that have to happen to make this project happen. At the end of the day, there’s going to be something really cool and impactful.”

Located by the University of Oregon Fine Arts Studios, the Urban Farm is a place for people and students to have an environmental community. The Knight Campus stands over the Urban Farm. Chicken Noodle Soup

It is that time of year again. We’ve watched the leaves change colors and gracefully fall from their branches.

And now they colorfully decorate our sidewalks and campus grounds.

The cold is starting to creep in and the forecast has officially changed to sweater weather. After walking around campus in the wind and rain, a hot bowl of soup really hits different.

My personal favorite, and a great soup for culinary novices to learn on, is chicken noodle soup. This soup is great for any college student.

With simple, minimal ingredients and a fast prep and cook time, this soup is the perfect recipe to explore, especially during fall.

Ingredients: 2 cups of chicken broth I usually use 3 cups of low sodium chicken broth for a brothier soup.

1 medium-sized carrot diced 1 medium-sized celery rib diced ¼ cup diced white onion ¾ cup of your favorite pasta I prefer using medium shells. ¾ cup shredded cooked chicken I like to buy a small amount of precooked shredded chicken from Albertsons, and it works great!

1 garlic clove, diced ½ teaspoon of oregano 1/8 stick of butter ½ a lemon Instructions: 1. Chop your carrots, onion, celery and garlic into small pieces.

2. Add your carrots, onion and celery

into a medium-sized pot on medium heat for 5 minutes with your butter.

3. Add your diced garlic and cook until the garlic is aromatic ~ about 2 minutes.

4. Add your chicken broth and oregano into the pot. Cover and cook on high heat until the broth boils.

5. Add your pasta noodles and shredded chicken to the pot and let cook until your noodles are fully cooked. If you’re low on broth, add another cup.

6. Squeeze your lemon half into the soup. This will completely brighten up your soup and add a level of acidity and freshness to your broth.

This is one of my favorite tricks when making chicken noodle soup.

7. Serve and enjoy!

Cooking and learning new recipes is such a delicious and rewarding experience. This is one of my favorite recipes to make on a cold night and has proven to be a fast, easy recipe to learn and perfect. It's also been a hit when cooking for friends and roommates. If you’re ever craving a homestyle chicken noodle soup, this recipe is the one for you.

Hygge is defined as “a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well being.” The Danish word was everywhere a few years ago, attached to everything from thick carpets to pumpkin spice.

Beyond its capitalist applications, hygge is actually quite a relevant concept to folks in places like Oregon, where the wintertime is, let’s face it, dark, dreary and difficult. As Country Living wrote in 2018, hygge is why Denmark is consistently ranked among the world’s happiest countries, “despite their infamously miserable winters.” The ability to cultivate warm, inviting interiors is quintessential to surviving the dark, cold, Nordic winters.

The key to hygge is the indoor component. In order to be content during the colder months, one has to craft an interior space that is as cozy as can be. In his book “The Little Book of Hygge,” Meik Wiking wrote that hygge is to Danes “what freedom is to Americans.” This is a helpful comparison to keep in mind; freedom does not always have to take place beyond the home. Cultivating a comfortable interior can make all the difference.

First and foremost, you do not want to be cold. This may seem obvious, but it cannot be overstated. No one likes waking up in the middle of the night because it is too cold. Flannel sheets are widely available, trendy and will keep most people warm the whole night through. There are plenty of flannel bedding options, from IKEA to Target and L.L. Bean. Before you consider purchasing some flannel sheets, it can be helpful to consider which specific item would make the biggest difference. For example, if you don’t use a top sheet, a flannel duvet cover might be the way to go, instead of a full sheet set.

Who says blankets are just for beds? Throw blankets can make the whole house more comfy and can be a more versatile option. IKEA makes a number of well-priced throw blankets.

The POLARVIDE is my go to, at $3.99, but the ODDHILD’s little carrying case is certainly also appealing at $5.99. If you are looking for a more heavy duty choice, camping blankets are superb. Sierra Designs makes a

great, large blanket for about $25, which can be bought at Target. Rumpl is a higher-end alternative, with their Puffy Blankets starting at $69.

These blankets are made to last many seasons, making them good items to invest in. More importantly, you can often find used blankets at thrift stores that still have a whole lot of life left in them thanks to their long-lasting quality.

One essential item that might be less obvious than a blanket is a reliable, warm pair of socks. Here in Eugene, Coastal Farm and Ranch, on W 6th Avenue, stocks a variety of Darn Tough and Smartwool options. Darn Tough has one of the best warranties ever. Their socks are “unconditionally guaranteed for life” and are available in myriad heights, thicknesses and colors. RunHub Northwest, at High Street and E 5th Avenue, also has some great socks, especially for those who are more active hiking or biking.

Now that you’re warm indoors, you also want to be entertained. Eugene is spoiled with its bookstores, from Smith Family Bookstore to Tsunami Books, both on Willamette Street.

Music can both lift your mood and fill the room. Ambient music, such as that by acclaimed British musician Brian Eno, can help you relax or focus – and can be a welcome, yet subtle, change from silence. There are also tons of great movies available to stream, from the new and incredible “Dune” on HBO Max to the countless films available for free to UO students through Kanopy.

You have your work cut out for you.

While it continues to get dark early in the evening and stay dark late into the morning, make sure you have everything you need to be comfy and cozy in the warmth of your own abode.

Denmark might have a head start on Eugene, but we too can be hygge.

CREATING CONNECTIONS AFTER COVID

Pages like uo_missedconnections help students make the leap from acquaintances to friends after months of social distancing.

part of the best years of their lives. The Instagram page UO Missed Connections aims to help students create in-person connections on campus. Coming out of a COVID year, the page reflects students’ anxieties and excitement about socializing in person again.

‘Missed connections’ Instagram accounts have been popping up on college campuses all over the country throughout 2021. The accounts present a new and less intimidating way for college students to meet.

Students send direct messages to the account with descriptions of another student they encountered and want to meet up with. Then, the account posts a screenshot of the DM with the hopes that the right person will recognize the description of themselves and reach out.

On May 26, one of these accounts started in Eugene. @uo_missedconnections made its first post last spring, starting with a screenshot of a DM that read: “I saw this girl at the Emu today get a strawberry surfrider. You complimented my bikini kill shirt.

Please see this.” A few days later, the account had its first success connecting two students after posting the DM: “to the blonde girl wearing a green skirt and a white shirt who was sitting outside the emu the other day, if you’re single, hmu please and thank you.”

Since then, the page has posted its anonymous DMs sporadically, throwing students’ hopes for connection into the void of the internet.

“Meeting for the first time is inherently awkward, and maybe the account can help break down some of the awkwardness,” Vithika Goyal, a UO sophomore said. “@uo_missedconnections is kind of destigmatizing meeting people through the internet.”

The account receives a myriad of different messages, from those looking for a romantic partner to students trying to reconnect with a friend they made earlier that day. One user even sent in a photo they took of a couple in Hendricks Park in an attempt to share the captured moment with the lovebirds.

Although more than half of @uo_missedconnections posts are someone seeking out an attractive stranger, the account is also good for platonic connections.

The UO missed connections page is run by six

administrators who wish to remain anonymous to maintain the anonymous nature of the account which they believe helps people feel comfortable submitting messages.

“We all lived together when we decided to start the page,” one administrator said. “Our friend had done a missed connection on Craigslist, and we kept saying how it would be so cool if there was one of these at UO. Then the page was born.”

“I feel like it’s cool to have a page that facilitates making connections,” another administrator said.

“It’s really helpful to have a place where UO students can find each other online.” They compared the page to Tinder, but a version in which you can take more initiative. “We’re in an era where people are scared to approach each other, and hopefully our page can help with that,” the second administrator said.

VITHIKA GOYAL, UO sophomore The page reflects that students are craving connection, but struggling to rejoin the social sphere after over a year of limited social interactions. “I think missing out on socializing is particularly hard for students because it’s a time when you’re leaving the home,” Catrin Rode, a clinical psychologist in Eugene, said. “Your brain is kind of designed to leave the nest and seek out new connections.” Rode specializes in ADHD and learning disorders, which means she sees a lot of young people and students.

to socialize during the pandemic. “This year it hasn’t been as hard to meet people, but last year was really tough,” Simmer said. “It would’ve been nice to meet more people, because last year I was just hanging around with the same people as freshman year.” He hopes there will be more opportunities to branch out this school year. Students like Simmer want to rejoin the social sphere, but are struggling because of the awkwardness COVID has created.

Since COVID hit, a lot of students have taken to connecting online. @ uo_missedconnections reflects how much easier it is for students to approach each other from behind a screen, where the stakes are lower.

“I’m used to people being scared to come up to me,” Caelan Fitzgibbons, a UO first year, said. “I used to be a Lolita, so I wore a lot of dresses and stuff like that, and now I just wear whatever I want but it tends to be a little out there.” Fitzgibbons has made some of their closest friends and met their significant other online. They like the idea of Missed Connections because most of their social life is online, where people feel more comfortable approaching them.

Kenneth Wilson, a junior at UO, has utilized social media apps to connect with others during COVID. “I’ve spent most of the last two years on Tinder and Hinge, so meeting online is a totally valid way to meet people,” Wilson said. He finds it harder to make a connection in public or in class and believes the influx of online socializing is a direct reflection of that.

Some students are finding it hard to bounce back after COVID and make friends; Goyal thinks that @uo_missedconnections is a cool way to counteract this challenge. “I don’t feel alone in the struggle,” she said. “I think everyone’s struggling in the same ways.”

Rode, the psychologist, is concerned that some people “have forgotten how to socialize” during COVID. “The re-entry is anxiety-provoking for a lot of people,” she said. “To be aware of that, and to be conscious about needing to do it and not avoiding it, is important.”

Rode thinks that, on a positive note, we’re now aware that we need and miss human connection. “Just being on our Instagram or Tinder, or socializing through social media, is not the same as the real thing,” Rode said. “We’re happier if we’re with people, and so even though it may be hard in the moment, it’s a lesson learned.”

Rode believes that COVID can be framed as a learning experience, especially for students that are experiencing it at such a crucial time in life. “We had a communal challenging experience and we came through,” she said. “I think it is important for students, because they were hit harder, to check in and check that they’re okay.”

The “Flower Eaters” exhibit places us into a strange reality where the supernatural thrives and our forbidden fantasies come out and play.

Walking into the gallery, the viewer is surrounded by darkness. Rose petals are scattered across the floor and synthetic bondage straps hang from the ceiling. Black lights cast a purple tint onto the gallery’s sculpture pieces, hiding their true color variations. A collection of flowers can be perceived as being overtaken by cement, representing human innovation that paves over nature.

The exhibition “Flower Eaters” in the ANTIAESTHETIC art center examines the idea of the apocalypse through elements of lust and the supernatural. The artists, UO MFA candidates Mary Wells, Dana Buzzee and Caroline Luchuiki, utilize various plastic materials to resemble exposed flesh and sexual fantasies in sculptures and collages. The objects are intended to be artificial and removed from our reality.

“Our vision for ‘Flower Eaters’ was to weave our individual pieces together into an altar,” Buzzee said.

“The lighting is a crucial element to this exhibition as it offers a visual representation of space-set-apart and realities-shifted within the gallery.”

Agnese Cebere, the program director at Eugene Contemporary Art and fellow MFA cohort member alongside Buzzee and Lichucki, said the show was formed by the artists’ concerns about climate change and governmental power shifts. Cebere said catastrophes force people to “face the mortality of ourselves and culture.”

scale synthetic resin bondage straps interconnect and overlap with chains and sigels that hang from the ceiling to floor. Sigels are unique symbols of ancient deities that hold powers to heal or create chaos.

Buzzee’s piece examines the fragility of the world and the global industries that bind humans together.

Buzzee believes people have a “fetishism” for objects by identifying with consumerist and globalist values.

“I was really interested in fallacies and fantasies of health and healing, the way that is tied into many aspects of our society such as capitalism, supply chains and the health and wellness industry,” Buzzee said. “I am interested in using art to elucidate new narratives that trouble essentializing approaches to these topics, as a speculative work around what it means to be sick or healthy, what it means to be toxic or intoxicated.”

In Mary Evans’ piece “Scrying Mirror,” the viewer experiences a sense of dread and mystery looking into the void. The piece's dark hole intimidates the viewer and makes one scared to find their own reflection on the other side. The mirror channels “otherworldly entities,” Evans wrote in the gallery pamphlet. The mirror is created with the opaque chemical called resin, which tints the mirror and casts a sinister form of oneself. Cebere explains the uneasiness of the piece is one's ability to cope with the unknown.

“Evans’ work has to do with death, but also another realm beyond this physical one,” Cebere said. “The scrying mirror is kind of part of that. The unknown is definitely frightening and depends on

how one relates to it.”

In “Lucifer and Madonna of Sorrows,” Caroline Lichucki portrays “star-crossed lovers.” The piece is a collage of interlaced fabrics of undergarment and translucent cloth. The picture is framed with black bondage straps, suggesting a forced relationship between the pair. Painted red arteries and blue veins painted connect the lovers. However, their love is proved to be tragic by the tear-shaped pins pierced into the nipples and eye ducts of the characters.

Cebere said Lichucki’s piece demonstrates the misery and the untold seductiveness of biblical characters.

“It has a lot to do with the dark side of religious iconography and subversion,” Cebere said. “I think there is a nod to sexuality and kink.”

Although the exhibit has a deep interest in the possible outcomes of society's ruin, there is also a sense of hope in these pieces. The art pushes people to reflect on the benefits they can receive from their cultural identity and recognize the disruptive factors of consumerism that have been disconnecting them from society. Cebere suggests we can all learn something in this crazy world.

“I think what we can learn from this exhibit is that there is hope in community by amplifying each other's goodness,” Cebere said. “We can be better in making conservations by sharing our ideals.”

The “Flower Eaters” exhibit is on display at the ANTIAESTHETIC art center in downtown Eugene from Oct. 23 through Dec. 19. It is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 12 p.m. -4 p.m.

EUGENE SAFE SLEEP SITES CAGE UNSHELTERED COMMUNITY

Opinion: Eugene presents the Safe Sleep sites as ideal, but they’re lackluster at best. “It’s alright. They always make promises they can’t keep though,” an unhoused resident of 310 Garfield St. said.

There were over 2,000 unhoused individuals in Lane County every month in 2019, according to the Lane County Point-in-Time Homeless Count. To address that issue, Eugene has approved five Safe Sleep sites with the goal of providing a legal space in which those without shelter may camp overnight, as stated in the original press release from the city.

As I looked into it further, what originally sounded like a great effort to help the unhoused community of Eugene quickly revealed itself as a disappointing endeavor to keep homelessness out of public view.

The first of those sites, located at 310 Garfield St in West Eugene, opened its gates on Oct. 4. I needed to see the place for myself. Walking up to the site from the nearby bus stop, I was greeted by a heavy chain link barrier and two attendants standing guard to keep unwanted visitors — anyone but a resident — off the premises. In the center of the concrete yard, dozens of tightly packed motorhomes sat idle. The site was silent but for the sound of aluminum cans rustling in plastic bags and an employee demanding I vacate the lot before I got two steps past the gate.

Since I wasn’t going to get anything out of the employees, I went higher up.

The program is overseen by Roxann O’Brien, the director of homeless and emergency services at St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP).

“It filled up the first day we opened; it took us about a week to get everybody over there because many of them needed to be towed,” O’Brien said. “We have a waitlist right now of about 75.”

However, each site has a limited number of lots — 60 for vehicles or 40 for tents, according to the city’s website. The city also prioritizes applicants based on where they’re currently camped. Prioritizing who moves in based on location rather than situation implies that the creation of the Safe Sleep sites is less about giving those in desperate need a safe place to stay and more about getting idle cars off the streets and emptying crowded parks.

According to Eugene’s website, Washington Jefferson Park has 224 occupied lots as of Oct. 5, and those camping in the park will be prioritized as the first to relocate to the next site. Despite such prioritization being announced online, unhoused people I spoke to in the park were largely unaware of the sites’ existence, indicating that the program

is being promoted to the general public rather than to those it claims to help. I spoke to three people camped in Washington Jefferson Park; only one knew of the Safe Sleep sites, and he wasn’t impressed.

“I’m homeless, why would I want to move somewhere else homeless?” Chris, a 55-year-old man, said. “I’m not moving to another homeless camp.

That’s stupid; that’s just passing a problem around.”

Chris had never been without housing before this year. He leaves the park every morning to go to work and returns to the encampment by evening. “[Eugene] keeps a lot of people crammed in the middle of parks. I’m not trying to sit in this park in front of people’s windows and their kids looking like a display,” Chris said.

However, with the chain link fence wrapped around 310 Garfield St., the site looks like a zoo enclosure rather than a protected community. At least camping at Washington Jefferson Park grants residents the freedom to walk in and out as they please.

If the unhoused citizens are settled into their current encampment, why is the city asking them to pick up shop and relocate to a less visible space?

It seems as though the city would rather hide the unhoused population than truly shelter them, let alone confront the systems Eugene has built that keeps those without housing on the streets.

Diane, a 68-year-old mother from California who now lives among the unhoused community in Eugene, is grateful for Washington Jefferson Park.

“It’s very hard out here. But I’m so happy that I walked into a place where we could camp,” she said.

Diane is happy in Washington Jefferson Park, so why is the city asking her to move elsewhere? They want her and her community out of the Eugene spotlight.

In Washington Jefferson Park, Diane also has access to ShelterCare, a nonprofit human services agency with a housing program right across the street where she attends appointments.

Although the government touts the Safe Sleep sites’ various hygiene facilities like a trophy, it has been awfully vague about what services are provided by the “social service providers” on site. The truth is that there aren’t any.

“There are no services attached with this program at all, no case management,” O’Brien said.

While the FOOD for Lane County Dining Room is a 0.4 mile walk from Washington Jefferson Park, the Dining Room is a 1.6 mile walk (or 16 minute bus ride) from the 310 Garfield site. ShelterCare sits at the border of Washington Jefferson Park, but it’s about a mile and a half walk (or 21 minute bus ride) from the only open Safe Sleep site. Since social services are not being provided on site, one has to question the motive of such isolated camps. In truth, it comes down to the optics.

For instance, O’Brien stated that SVdP requires residents to “keep your area neat. It’s all about keeping it clean.” One of the qualifications for the Safe Sleep site is that a resident's lot isn’t unsightly, so they limit the number of items outside the vehicle to four.

The cleanliness of one’s lot is monitored by the staff on site. SVdP employs two people who are on the property 24/7. The staff patrols the lots to check for neatness and monitor who comes in and out of the gates. On top of that, the employees enforce the other primary rule upheld by SVdP: Residents are forbidden from having guests within the premises, and press is not allowed near site without making contact with the director first. But is the fence to keep everybody else out or unhoused people in?

Think about this: The city has offered to “help” those camped in the parks and on the streets, but the residents must bring their own tent or vehicle to live in; they must limit the number of belongings outside their home to no more than four; they must be willing to move away from centrally located services to a site that offers none; they must be willing to be surveilled 24/7; they are not allowed to have visitors nor are they allowed to talk to members of the press about their experiences without the approval of SVdP. People talk about unhoused people not being willing to accept help that’s offered to them but don’t mention what all that “help” costs.

“Out of sight, out of mind” is an okay sentiment to have when scattered food crumbs disappear among the carpet, but the way Eugene is applying the concept to its own citizens is absolutely barbaric. While the city can argue that the chain link fence was put in place to prevent wanderers from traipsing through the Safe Sleep site, from an outside perspective it looks like an encasement placed around an intensely monitored community instead.

NONSTOP RECRUITING Y E K C O H S PAYING OFF FOR DUCK New players help drive Oregon hockey’s hot start to the season

BY DYLAN CONWAY Two years ago, Oregon club hockey head coach Rylee Orr and assistant coach Christian Vivian traveled to Las Vegas for a showcase to scout players.

There, the coaches met Hunter Voyles and Jimmy Gagen, a promising duo of recruits from Boston.

Two years later, Voyles and Gagen made their debuts as Ducks. They had an immediate impact. In the Ducks’ home openers on Oct. 15 and 16, Gagen scored twice, and Voyles filled in for an injured player, helping the Ducks secure two wins over a talented team in San Diego State. “[They’re] two guys that just stood out to me right away and played like guys who have been here for five years already,” Orr said.

Keeping connections with players from across the U.S and Canada is key for Oregon to bring in highly skilled recruits.

“You definitely have to cast a wide,” Vivian said.

“Sometimes you will start talking to a kid and, three years later, it finally materializes.”

After a year was taken away from Oregon hockey due to COVID-19, the team is back in action and off to a hot start. The Ducks (6-0) are looking to make another push at regionals and, ultimately, compete for a national championship. An active recruiting network across both the U.S. and Canada is at the heart of the recent success. This recruitment strategy sets the stage for the team's goal of winning a national championship.

It wasn’t easy to get the team back to the playing level they were at in early 2020 — when they won back-toback Pac-8 championships and qualified for regionals.

With many players either graduating, retiring or moving to play hockey somewhere else, recruiting has been a top priority for the team to grow the program in the past few years. The Ducks are starting the season with 15 rookies which include nine recruits and six walk-ons.

assisting Orr and Vivian. Throughout Canada, those friends actively attend games and talk to players on behalf of the Oregon coaches. If a player appears interested, they are put in contact with Orr, who takes over from there.

“It's kind of a long process, which can be frustrating at times, but can be very rewarding at the same time,” Orr said.

It’s a year-round process as there are nonstop showcases and games across North America.

When searching for potential recruits, Orr and Vivian are looking for quality hockey players who are good people off the ice, but an undying passion for the game is just as important.

The team travels on most weekends. And the early morning practices can take a toll on the players.

“When you're doing that for months on end, that can be pretty grueling,” Orr said. “So having someone that loves hockey is definitely something that we look for as well.”

Orr and Vivian pride themselves on selling what the program is trying to accomplish.

“We sell what we’re trying to do here; we sell our vision and we sell our passion,” Vivian said.

The vision: Win a national championship. Moving up to American Collegiate Hockey Association D1 level hockey is also vocalized by Orr as one of the main goals for Oregon hockey in the near future.

Ducks hockey is undefeated, but the team is still working on building chemistry on the ice. With 15 rookies on the team, there hasn’t been much time to build those on ice connections. Before their home opener, they only had six practices under their belt.

“If you look at our first weekend vs Cal, we played pretty simple and didn't try to do anything too much on the ice because we didn’t have the chemistry quite built up,” Gagen said.

Keeping it simple has been the in-game mindset so far while the systems and chemistry continues to be a work in progress.

Winning this early in the season is a good sign for the team as the squad will only mesh better with time.

Orr believes this team has a legit shot at nationals, which takes place next March in St. Louis.

With nine recruits playing their first season, gelling and boosting chemistry is of the utmost importance.

Early wins shows that the skill is there, but in order to make that next step in competition, the systems and chemistry need to be strong.

“We will go to regionals, and we should make it to nationals,” Orr said. “I truly feel like, if this team keeps gelling, I think this team could win a national championship. I really do.”
