As Trinity United Methodist Church closes, future of its Egan Warming Center and other community resources is uncertain

A website, Save Trinity Eugene, said that the church is “under attack,” and that a pair of ministers may be trying to sell the building without the approval of the congregation.

Trinity is host to one of the primary Egan Warming Centers – a program that offers a place to sleep and a meal for houseless individuals during extremely cold weather – as well as the FISH food pantry, which provides food boxes for those in need and a “free store” where people can come to get clothes, toiletries and toys all for no cost.

An announcement made during the Nov. 19 church service said that the Trinity United Methodist Church is closing “effective immediately.”

The announcement of closure posted on its Facebook page states that the services offered, including the food pantry and the warming center, would be able to continue using the space until the spring while the trustees of the OregonIdaho Conference of Methodist Churches “discuss the future” of the property.

The announcement made by John Tucker, superintendent of the Crater Lake District of Methodist Churches, said the sudden closure was due to “behaviors of both known and anonymous parties [creating] an atmosphere too toxic for pastoral leadership.”

The announcement also had a list of anticipated questions, including one raised about the recent closure of the Coburg United Methodist Church.

The Coburg United Methodist Church, according to the announcement, was voted to be closed by the congregation. The Save Trinity Website refutes this, saying that the church was forcibly closed.

The Coburg Church is now named “Coburg Commons,” has no Sunday church services listed on its website and acts as a bookstore and event space.

Rebecca Wetmore, a churchgoer and frequent volunteer at the warming center at Trinity, said

that last year she volunteered at the warming center for 31 nights — every day they were open.

“Egan is a no-barrier shelter,” Wetmore said.

“It’s freezing out and people can’t go here because ‘they’re drunk,’ or can’t go here because they’re ‘kicked out.’ But we’re like ‘no, you can come here.’”

Wetmore said that Trinity is one of the only locations still able to offer this service in Eugene, and that she is unsure where houseless people would turn to if this church, and the warming center with it, were to close. Wetmore also said that the FISH food pantry director has told her they have not been able to find an alternate location if Trinity were to close.

“It would be devastating.” Wetmore said. “For the houseless community, and for this neighborhood.”

Wetmore said that the fear the church will close comes from church attendance being in decline, but she said that Trinity has already adapted to this.

“We rent out a preschool, and we have four women-owned businesses that we rent out to generate income,” she said. “We’re selfsustaining. Why are they liquidating?”

She said that the church, being an expensive building to maintain, is likely seen as a liability because there isn’t enough money being returned to the district.

“A church shouldn’t be a for-profit model.

That’s ridiculous. We’re a nonprofit, we’re not here to make money for the districts.”

Wetmore said that if the church was sold, the money will go to ministries outside of Lane County.

Sue Mulvihill, a lay minister who often preached at Monroe United Methodist, another church that has been closed, said that she cannot see why the congregation would stay with Methodist churches at all “if the district and the conference are corrupt.”

“The people that belong to that church, that baptize their babies, had their children’s weddings and probably planned to have their funerals there. Those people – I cannot see one reason for them to stay with that church or with Methodist churches in general,” Mulvihill said.

DITCH YOUR CELSIUS HABIT OPINION: The energy boost isn’t worth the risk

We’ve all seen the cans. No matter if you’re glancing around your 200-person lecture hall or cheering on the Ducks at a football game, the “essential energy” drink, Celsius, is inescapable. As a caffeine fan myself, I’ve certainly succumbed to the tantalizing flavors in hopes of “living fit.” Still, due to the health risks and destructive cultures perpetuated by Celsius, I implore that we ditch the drink for the sake of our overall well-being (and our pockets, too).

The primary concern with Celsius revolves around its short and long-term potential side effects. Due to the relative newness of metabolismboosting technology and a lack of corporate transparency, it’s difficult to discern its exact health effects. Overall, there’s a complete lack of research into its specific blend of ingredients, making it difficult for consumers to make properly informed decisions.

As an energy drink, Celsius may lead to higher blood pressure than other caffeinated beverages due to additional ingredients other than caffeine that make up the “essential energy blend.” In a 2017 study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, medical researchers observed that “the correct QT Interval and systolic BP were significantly higher post high-volume energy drink consumption when compared to caffeine alone.”

And for many people, Celsius is a necessity, bordering on addiction. Alexandra Locsin, an avid Celsius fan, shared her experience, saying, “I typically drink around three cans a day. It’s really easy to find on campus, so I’ll just grab one when I need a boost of energy throughout the day.”

Aside from harming your body, I’d argue that the culture surrounding Celsius is equally destructive.

Marketed as a dietary supplement that “accelerates metabolism” and “burns body fat,” Celsius is seen as the weight-loss friendly alternative to typical energy drinks, such as Red Bull and Monster Energy. I worry that this narrative perpetuates ever-present diet culture, encouraging consumers to opt for a potentially detrimental beverage in hopes of losing weight. On TikTok, users even go as far as to describe Celsius as “the next Ozempic” for its size-shrinking abilities.

Indirectly, Celsius also encourages students to sacrifice sleep as a part of “hustle culture.” With its 200 milligrams of caffeine per can and wide accessibility, it’s common for students to seek out Celsius as a sleep alternative compared to other sources of caffeine. Coffee, for instance, historically serves as a staple of your morning routine, a moment to reflect before the busy day ahead, and as a pick-me-up when needed. On PA G E 4

the other hand, energy drinks are a means of persevering through the endless list of tasks, often viewed as a replacement for proper sleep or diet.

In its college-directed marketing campaigns, Celsius strikes me as predatory. For example, with its massively popular Celsius University program, the brand has college students gain “hands-on marketing experience” by handing out mass quantities of free products on campus. While I understand the hands-on appeal, I can’t help but see a problem with using students to get their peers hooked on a product, especially knowing the financial burden of a Celsius addiction. Costing over two dollars per can, consistently drinking Celsius is not for the faint of heart or wallet.

Additionally, as of late August this year, UO has entered into a partnership with Celsius, along

with three other universities. LEARFIELD, the media and technology company behind this partnership, describes its details: “Partnering with LEARFIELD presents CELSIUS with an incredible opportunity to further integrate CELSIUS into the world of college sports, continuing to drive brand awareness on campuses nationwide and leverage our expanding CELSIUS University program.”

What’s the solution to our caffeine conundrum?

It’s simple: drink coffee or tea. They’re both historically popular options for a reason. So much more research has been done on their health effects; they’re delicious and made from natural ingredients, and encourage a balance of productivity, sleep and proper diet. Don’t waste your money and heart function on Celsius; wake up and invest in yourself.

AFTER LOSS OF STUDENT CONTROL, WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE EMU? Following the 2022 transfer of its budget, the EMU is likely to see its board downsized CONTROL OVER THE ERB MEMORIAL UNION’S FINANCES CHANGED IN THE WINTER OF 2022, when then-Associated Students of the University of Oregon president Isaiah Boyd decided to transfer the building from ASUO’s budget into the control of UO administration. While evidence shows that the reasons for the transfer were legitimate, Boyd acted without the knowledge of the ASUO Senate, according to interviews and records obtained by the Daily Emerald.

BY IAN PROCTOR • DESIGNED BY RYAN EHRHART The Senate initially passed the budget authorizing the EMU transition on Jan. 29, 2022, but then attempted to reverse it in an emergency Senate meeting. The effort failed, however, because then-UO President Michael Schill approved the budget transferring the EMU. The ramifications of that decision continue to reverberate almost two years later.

Today, the final approval of the EMU’s budget is no longer done by ASUO. The budget approval is now done through the Tuition and Fees Advisory Board, which students do not vote on.

This means that the university can raise the amount students pay for the EMU without any student vote.

Internal presidential transition documents for current President John Karl Scholz obtained by the Emerald state that while the EMU transfer was “necessary for budgetary reasons,” it was also cause for tension between the student body and the administration, with UO acknowledging that

students saw the situation as “shady.” “[The EMU transfer] was done with very little oversight,” UO student worker activist Max Jensen said. “Students had just paid 90 million dollars of Student I-Fee money to remodel the building, and then gave it away for nothing to the administration, with the bulk of the discussion happening in private meetings between ASUO President Boyd and Kevin Marbury.”

Jensen said that students lost their autonomy after the transfer: such as the loss of professional printing services and the ability to improve contracts within the EMU for better working conditions.

Marbury, Boyd and Schill could not be reached for comment.

HOW THE TRANSFER HAPPENED The ASUO Senate was notified by the EMU’s financial director about the EMU’s rising labor and

COVER utility costs as early as Oct. 22, 2020. If left unresolved, the EMU’s ballooning budget would start to consume funds meant for other student organizations. These financial burdens would later be cited by UO as the primary reason for the EMU transfer.

Concerns about the EMU’s expenses would not resurface until over a year later.

Emails obtained by the Emerald through a public records request show that Isaiah Boyd and the then-Vice President of Student Life Marbury had discussed the EMU transfer in private meetings on several occasions as something that might have to be addressed in the future.

The earliest emails dated from late December 2021, in which Boyd and EMU administrators discussed the trend of declining EMU revenue and rising labor costs that were outpacing inflation. On Dec. 21, 2021, Boyd, Marbury and EMU administrators had a meeting where they discussed this further.

The EMU’s financial administrators and Boyd continued to email each other after December 2021.

At a second meeting on Jan. 14, 2022, Marbury made the determination that if the EMU were to be transferred, it would have to happen the very next week at “Budget Bonanza” — ASUO’s final budget approval meeting, according to the documents.

On Jan. 21, 2022, Boyd emailed Marbury final questions regarding the EMU transfer before making his final decision. He requested that there be no room costs for student organizations, and that any proposed changes in services to the EMU be approved by or consulted with ASUO. Marbury responded that no significant changes will be made to the EMU’s operations. The ASUO Suite would continue to be occupied by ASUO rent-free, and that all student organizations currently with EMU space at the time would have no charge to their rooms.

Boyd agreed to transition the EMU out of the Incidental Fee, the ASUO-controlled fee that all students pay.

Boyd did not notify the rest of ASUO until Jan. 22, 2022, the day after he agreed to the transfer.

In the email, Boyd explained how the decision would alleviate the budgetary concerns of the EMU as well as ASUO. He ended the email by acknowledging that some ASUO Senators would disagree with his decision, but that they should reflect on the “why” of their disagreement and to do so in a respectful manner.

On Jan. 25, 2022, Marbury emailed then-UO President Michael Schill that he and Boyd had reached an agreement to transition the EMU off the I-Fee, and for his “prompt approval” of the decision to transfer the EMU out of time constraints.

President Schill finally approved of the EMU transfer on Jan. 27, 2022. The next day, the EMU agreement between Marbury and Boyd was sent to the Tuition and Fees Advisory Board.

Two days later, the ASUO Senate held its annual Budget Bonanza meeting. The budget they approved reduced the EMU’s budget to $0, and in doing so, approved the transfer.

Following this meeting and outcry from various student groups, ASUO Senate held an emergency

session on Feb. 18 — a “second Budget Bonanza” — where they attempted to reverse the transition.

But that attempt failed — the ASUO Senate presented more than one final budget to the university president to sign, and President Schill signed the budget removing the EMU from the I-Fee, removing it from 72 years of student financial control.

As of 2022, students no longer vote on the EMU’s budget — that process is now done by the administration via the Tuition and Fee Advisory Board.

WHAT’S HAPPENED SINCE Two years after the divorce of the EMU Board from ASUO on the administrative side, student leaders in the EMU Board and ASUO were left to clean up the mess — the remaining threads between the two bureaucracies — from their ends.

That process continues to this day.

Chloé Webster, the current ASUO president, served as an ASUO Senate representative on the EMU Board from 2022-23.

Currently, there are still dedicated ASUO Senate seats on the EMU Board. But since winter 2023, Webster has been tasked with redistributing those seats.

“Because the EMU is no longer funded by the I-Fee, it does not make sense to include the EMU Board in the ASUO governing documents or include EMU Board Senators on Senate,” Webster said. Therefore, mentions of the EMU Board in the ASUO Constitution will need to be removed.

To do this, ASUO is planning for a special election to occur during winter term.

Students had power in the EMU Board via four dedicated ASUO Senate seats and additional program seats. However, the transfer of the EMU

stripped the student seats on the EMU Board of their voting power, as the final approval of the EMU’s budget is now approved by the Tuition and Fees Advisory Board.

This means that if the EMU’s budget is increased to pay for the wages of EMU workers, students will not have a role in voting on it.

Internal efforts are also underway to change the EMU Board’s bylaws, given that it is now separate from ASUO. Audrey Kalman, a graduate student who is the chair of the EMU Board, says the group of students who run the Board are committed to finding ways to best utilize the EMU. Kalman says she and Webster are looking to determine how “relevant” the EMU Board is to ASUO, and if it should still be a “responsibility for any senators.”

“ASUO and EMU Board are now two separate bodies. So the argument could be made that we don’t have to respect ASUO’s rules and have those people on the board,” Kalman said. “However, that would be a very unpopular argument to make, because that would be seeking conflict in a way that I certainly don’t think would be necessary.”

According to Kalman, the removal of the Vice Chair and potential other roles is due to the unequal division of work between the positions.

With the Board’s previous structure, members were “not fulfilling their obligations,” necessitating changes to the EMU Board’s internal structure, which are ongoing.

“We’re tailoring the suit to fit the board. I’ve told the board we’ve now taken longer than the United States in drafting our Constitution,” Kalman said.

NEXT STEP: OXFORD Senior Nayantara Arora has been named UO’s first Rhodes Scholar since 2007

In a conference room on the Seattle University campus in November, students anxiously awaited the return of the judges they had spoken with nearly three hours before, chatting with one another and playing cards to pass the time. Poised in a corner near a charging outlet sat Nayantara Arora, a University of Oregon senior who had no idea her life would change forever.

Upon the judges’ arrival, bringing significant news, the room seemed to take a collective breath.

A man pulled a singular piece of paper from his jacket pocket, the words containing the results of the Rhodes Scholarship competition.

“In that moment, I was very content with whatever decision was going to be made,” Arora said. “And when I heard my name, I think I just blanked. I didn’t hear anything else because of the blood rushing in my ears. There was a silence in the room, and then it was chaos.”

Established in 1902, the Rhodes Scholarship is the most prolonged standing and one of the most esteemed international scholarship programs around the globe. It eliminates the cost of two to three years of postgraduate study at the University of Oxford. The Rhodes Scholarship also includes a stipend to cover the cost of living expenses, as well as an allowance that grants students the opportunity to settle into their new surroundings.

“I think what makes it a truly life-changing moment and experience for Nayantara is you become part of an international cohort of scholars, both in her class of 2024 and those scholars dating back to the early and mid-twentieth century,” Kevin Hatfield, assistant vice provost for undergraduate research and distinguished scholarships at UO, said. “We’re talking many folks that have done wonderful change in the world and impacted the world truly on a global level.”

There were over 2,500 applicants for the Rhodes Scholarship this year alone, with 862 students earning endorsements from their universities to advance. From there, 32 were selected from that pool to join the 2024 Rhodes Scholarship class.

The University of Oregon is one of five public institutions nationwide to have a Rhodes Scholar.

“I’ve worked with a ton of students who have applied for these prestigious scholarships, Rhodes, Marshall. Some have got these scholarships, and some haven’t. Nayantara was the first student where I just had this feeling she would get it,” Josh Snodgrass, UO professor of anthropology and global health, said. “I was so excited for her, PA G E 8

but also, it was not at all surprising. It just seemed totally, cosmically right.”

Arora is currently honing her next steps, gearing up to pursue two master’s degrees in international health and tropical medicine, as well as modeling for global health. She hopes to leave a legacy that incentivizes the next generation of University of Oregon students to apply for prestigious

scholarships like Rhodes.

“I just hope that the fact that I’m the first woman from UO to ever receive the Rhodes Scholarship, the first [UO] woman of color to receive the Rhodes Scholarship, the first person [from UO] in 15 years, really encourages people to consider applying for the scholarship,” Arora said. “And I’m so grateful that I got this opportunity.”

HEATING UP AT THE RIGHT TIME

As Oregon volleyball’s regular season starts wrapping up, individual achievements are putting the team in a strong position heading into playoffs Coming off an undefeated week at home — one where the Ducks only lost one set — Oregon is headed to Stanford, Calif., to face the only Pac-12 team ranked higher than them.

When the two teams met in Matthew Knight Arena a few weeks earlier, the nationally televised game showed a team that looked ready for the NCAA tournament and one who still needed some more time in the 1-3 loss.

“We were the anti-tentative team tonight,” head coach Matt Ulmer said after the loss. “We have a lot of potential to be a great team, we just need to execute a little better.”

In the rematch on Nov. 9, Oregon forced a fifth set after being down 0-2 and on the verge of a sweep.

Despite coming up short in the end 12-15 in the fifth, it was a defining moment for individual players.

Morgan Lewis tied her career high of 19 kills while hitting .405 — the last time she did that was against Pittsburgh in mid-September — and Hannah Pukis led the three double-doubles that were recorded that night with 48 assists and 11 digs. Early in that match, she recorded her 5,000th assist of her career, making her one of two active setters across the NCAA with those stats.

Georgia Murphy tied her season-high with 18 digs and Elise Ferreira broke her season-high with four aces during the match, which included two in the fifth set to push for a chance to win.

It’s moments like these that define how far a team can make it in the tournament. By doing it against one of the best teams in the country and all odds, it shows how important the little things can lead to big rewards.

While it wasn’t a win according to the box score, Oregon continued that same energy for the rest of the road trip.

Different athletes continued to set their own records and the excitement around them bolstered the team. In the following game against the Golden Bears, Kara McGhee had a career-high 18 kills, six of which came during the fifth set when the Ducks were close to losing the game. On top of that, Colby Neal recorded a career-high nine blocks and the 100th of her career.

The first time that Oregon faced Arizona State this season, the Ducks were handed their first sweep at home — a place last season where they didn’t lose at all. Coming into the third game of the road trip, revenge was on the team’s mind while the two battled it out for sole ownership of second

place in the conference.

No individual records were set during this match, but everyone carried the mindset that it takes to push the bar higher.

“I really liked us tonight,” Ulmer said after the fourmatch win over the Sun Devils. “It was obviously a really good team and this is a tough place to win.

They did everything right and we did everything wrong in the third set, but other than that, I thought our communication was great and we had a lot of poise. We kept competing really hard and we got great contributions from so many people.”

Lewis reached the 800 career kills benchmark that night after having a team-high of 16. With 13 kills and 11 digs, Gabby Gonzales hit her own benchmark of 1,500 kills and 1,200 digs in her career.

Statistically, Arizona State beat Oregon in most categories. The Ducks were out-hit and the Sun Devil’s defense kept them at a .190 hitting percentage, their lowest all season. But, the crucial moments shined in a time during the season where it matters most.

“I thought everybody came in locked into the game plan,” Ulmer said after Arizona State. “From point one we were on our game plan, which we have done a really poor job of that. So that was really exciting to see and I thought that put a lot of pressure on them.

And then we just kind of played our ball.”

With Selection Sunday — seeding for playoffs — right around the corner on Nov. 26, the little moments, big picture and style of play that has been emphasized all season is starting to pay off at the right time.

“I think we can be playing our best ball and be in a position where we can win six matches against high-quality competition,” Ulmer told Duck Insider. “That’s the NCAA tournament.”
